And one of the ministries that you support is Hope is Alive. Ministry, it's devoted to helping those who are in dealing with addictions and their families. And one of their treatment centers is called the Healing Center, where they have a Christ-centered approach and helping those who are battling drugs, alcohol, gambling, and all kinds of different addiction, sexual addictions. And we wanted to just show you, because it's such an amazing ministry, just a quick story of how your giving is changing lives. I want you to check this out. - We're here at the Healing Center. I just spent 45 days here. Before I came here, I was on the news. Just got out of jail, life was in shambles.
And in these 45 days, man, I got to really meet God. I got to really getting good with a group of guys and really get vulnerable. I don't know, all it's been a really great experience. I've been to 10 different rehabs, man. I ran this race a long time, and I just really felt centered here. Something woke me up, and I just had it in my heart to get baptized. So I took that step, took that plunge, and then three other people from my group joined in. So the spirit kind of took over, if that makes sense. You just got to feel it. I can't really explain it with words. You know, it's just something that happened here. So I'm just grateful for it. - Yeah, praise the Lord. Church, I just want you to know that your generosity is making a difference in so many people's lives. And like Rakim, helping them to find hope and life that's only found in Jesus. And so many of you give your tithe and give above your tithe to offerings, to help people to be set free and to grow in their relationship with God and to discover their God-given purpose. Well, today, people's church, thank you for your giving. It's making a huge difference. Father, we thank you for the ministry of hope is alive
and the work that they're doing and helping people to find freedom, to be set free and to have their life firmly established in Christ. God, we ask that you would bless this ministry, use them to help see more people's lives change, more people's set free by the power of God we pray in Jesus' name. Amen. (upbeat music) - If you're new with us today, we're talking about some of the key doctrines in the Bible, so we can better understand what Christians believe and why it matters. And today, I wanna talk about several doctrines that are all around one major theme in the Bible and the theme that we're gonna talk about today is sin. Now, you can relax today. I'm not gonna have you turn to your neighbor and ask each other what's the top three sins you struggle with. We're not gonna do that today, that'll be next week. Just kidding. The Bible has a lot to say about sin. The biblical definition of sin means to miss the mark. The word sin is an archery term that simply means that we miss the mark, we miss the mark. God has a standard or a bullseye for all of humanity. And every single person has missed the mark. I know there are some of you are bow and arrow hunters.
I'm not one, but God bless all of you that are. But you like the bow and arrow hunt. Some of you are good at archery. Anybody good at archery, you're kind of good at some archery. Just imagine with me everybody, imagine if you were in an archery competition where everybody gets one shot. You only win if you hit the bullseye. Everybody pulls back the bull and arrow, got my little, got my little bows and arrows church I came prepared for you today. God pulls back the bull and arrow and they shoot their shots. One shoots over here, one shoots over there. One gets close. I mean they get it close and barely miss. One shoots like John Mathir and kind of cut it back there. What? People shooting and not hitting the target. People shooting and yet some people only miss by an inch. Some people miss by a foot. Some miss so badly you were wondering if they were even aiming at the bullseye. But no one won the prize because no one hit the bullseye. It doesn't matter how far each person missed the bullseye by because everyone missed the bullseye whether they missed it by an inch or two or they missed it by a foot or by a mile. You see the problem when it comes to our sin is we like to compare how far we missed the mark to how far somebody else has missed the mark. Well, I'm not as bad as them. I mean they miss God standard by a mile. I just miss it by a foot. My sin is not nearly as bad as their sin. I mean look at them.
Look at them. Look at them. Look at what they do. Can you believe what they do? Can you? Can you? I'm nasty people over there. But God does not grade our sin on a curve. God standard is either you hit the bullseye, perfect perfection or you don't. The standard is not your neighbor, it's not your friend, it's not your co-worker, it's not one of your crazy relatives, Uncle Fred, no that's not your standard. The bullseye is God standard. Holiness is God's standard and we all fall short of God's standard and I want to begin today's teaching by looking at where sin originated. I want to give you a solid overview of how sin entered the world, how it has impacted our world and our lives and look also at God's solution to this problem called sin. So let's start from the very beginning. You got to understand this very important biblical doctrine. Let's go to the very beginning, the doctrine of God's original plan. The core idea of this doctrine is that God created humanity in his image. When God created humanity, there was no sin, no sickness, no death. Adam and Eve lived in perfection, God created humanity for his glory so that we could have relationship with him and so that he could accomplish his purpose through us and in the very first book of the Bible, God created mankind. Genesis chapter 1 verse 26 and God said, let us make mankind in our image and our likeness so that they may rule over the fish in the sea, the most purpose and the birds of the sky, over the livestock and all of the wild animals and over all the creatures that move along the ground. God made humanity in his image and he gave us purpose right from the very beginning because Isaiah talks about this in chapter 43, verse seven,
everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made, were made in God's image to bring God glory by carrying out His will in the earth. The idea of being created in the image of God is what theologians call the amago day, which literally means image bearers. We are literally carriers of the image of God in the earth. You say pastor, why is this important? Because every single person on the planet has dignity and value because they're created in the image of God. You don't get to decide people's value. The situations people find themselves in doesn't determine their value. Their bank account does not determine their value. Their skin color does not determine their value. The country or the neighborhood they live in does not determine their value. Every person is valuable because God made them, they're created in the image of God. God has purpose for every person. God has always desired relationship with every single human being. Matter of fact, go back to the book of beginnings, Genesis. From the very beginning, God had a relationship with Adam and Eve. But then something broke that relationship. Something broke that fellowship that leads me to this second doctrine.
The doctrine of the fall of man. Adam and Eve disobeyed the one, the one command God gave them. Genesis chapter number two, verse 16 and 17, and the Lord God commanded the man. You are free to eat from any tree in the garden. I mean, there's trees all around here. Eat away, eat, eat, eat. But you must not eat from the one tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. For when you eat of it, you will certainly die. God told Adam and Eve, they could eat from every tree. Oh, the trees in the garden, except for one. But guess what they did? Genesis chapter three, verse six and seven, when the woman saw the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some of the fruit from the tree she was not supposed to eat from and ate it. She also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. Now notice this, notice this, notice this, then the eyes of both of them were opened. Their eyes were opened. They were seeing things differently. Their eyes were opened and they realized they were naked so they sold fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Adam and Eve, they missed the mark
and their eyes were opened, meaning they were now living in a fallen, sin-sick world. They were seeing things differently because now sin was present. Because of the disobedience, their disobedience sin and the consequences of sin entered the world and things would never be the same again for humanity. That leads me to this third doctor or you have to understand what Christians believe and why it matters, the doctrine of original sin. The doctrine of original sin simply means when Adam and Eve sinned, their nature changed. They were now sinners and that sin nature was passed down through birth to every single person who has ever lived. Romans chapter five, verse 12, therefore just as sin came into the world through one man Adam and death through sin and so death spread to all men because all sinned. So when Adam sinned way back in the garden, sin entered all of mankind. Mankind became morally corrupt, spiritually dead. Every single person who has ever been born on planet earth or who will ever be born is born a sinner. Every person. because you didn't have to teach your kids how to throw a fit or how to lie. Come on, how many of you were shocked when your kid first lied?
You're thinking, you're just two years old. Where'd you learn a lie like that? I mean, you lying good. Where'd you learn that from? They got it from you. Because you lied 'em through a fit as a kid. And so did your parents. They lied 'em through a fit when they were kids. And so did their parents. And so did their parents. And so did their parents. And so did their parents. And so did their parents. This is the doctrine of original sin. We have all sinned, because we all have a sin nature that makes us sinful and selfish. Ephesians chapter two, verse three, among whom. We all want to live in the passion of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind. And work, notice this. By nature, by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. By our very nature, we're children of wrath. We sin, because we are born sinners. We have a sin nature that leads me to a second doctrine. Understanding what Christians believe in why it matters. Number four, the doctrine of total depravity. Total depravity simply means because of sin, every part of us has been affected by sin. And you and I, we are unable to save ourselves
and to make ourselves right with God. It's impossible for us to do it on our own. First Corinthians chapter number two, verse 14. The natural person does not accept the things of the spirit of God, for they are folly to him. And he is not able. He is not able. He is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. Because we are born into sin. We are totally lost in our sin. There's no way we can come to God on our own. So God had to do for us what we could never do for ourselves. Ephesians chapter two, verse four and five. But God being rich in mercy saw us in total depravity because of the great love with which he loved us. Even when we were dead in our trespasses, he made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. God sent Jesus into the world to rescue us from our sin because we could never, ever save ourselves. That's what total depravity means. We're totally and completely lost in our sin. So we can never, ever come to God on our own. John chapter six, verse 44. No one can come to me, Jesus said, unless the father who sent me draws him and I will raise him up on the last day. Where we are totally depraved and cannot even come to Jesus on our own.
You see, some people think, well, I know people who are worse than me. They're bad, there was some bad people. Or people think I could be living in way more sin than I'm currently living in. I could be doing a whole lot worse than I am pastor, but total depravity doesn't mean you can't get worse. It means you can't get better. It means you're totally infected and affected by sin. Every part of you, no matter how hard you try, no matter how many good deeds you do, you cannot get right with God and overcome sin on your own. And religion confuses people because religion is all about doing good or being good. Some people even think that Christianity is about doing good or being good, like somehow we can save ourselves from our sinful condition by our own good deeds or our own good works. But that's just not possible because of total depravity. We can't save ourselves from our sinful condition. There's no way we can get right with God on our own. And that takes us to the next important biblical doctrine, son of God, was born by a virgin named Mary. He lived a perfect and a sinless life and he took our place on the cross and he paid the price for all of our sins. This is what theologians called substitutionary atonement. Substitute meaning he took our place. Atonement meaning there was a break in relationship that needed to be mended so we could be reconciled back to God. So when sin entered the world, it separated us from God. It separated humanity
from the Lord. And because God is holy, God is just sin had to be dealt with. He is a holy God. God cannot ignore sin. He cannot wink at sin and still be holy and a just God. So in the New Testament, God made a way for the people to have their sins covered through animal sacrifice. So what the people would do, they would, the people would typically take a lamb and they would sacrifice it. The lamb would literally take the people's place and took the punishment that they deserved for their sins. Hebrews 9 verse 22, in fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood and without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness. There is no forgiveness of sin. So what would happen in the Old Testament is the lamb's blood was standing in for the person's blood. The lamb took their place and the sacrifice covered their sin so the people could be made right with God. But there was a problem with the Old Testament system. The blood of a lamb could cover their sin temporarily, but it could not change their hearts. So they would sin again. And that meant they had to sacrifice another lamb. But their heart never changed, they would sin again. And then they had to sacrifice another lamb. It was a vicious cycle of sin, sacrifice, sin, another lamb sacrifice, sin, another lamb sacrifice, sin, another lamb sacrifice, over and over and over and over again. And God wanted a better system for his people to receive the forgiveness of their sins. So God sent his one and only son Jesus Christ to the earth. Jesus left heaven, was born by a virgin named Mary. He lived a perfect and sinless life. He took our place on the cross and he died for our sins. He was the lamb of God, fully God and fully man. And Jesus is the only sinless person to ever live. Don't miss it. He's the only sinless person to ever live. So Jesus alone was the only one qualified to pay for the sins of humanity. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice for our sins. 2 Corinthians 5 verse 21, for our sake, he made him to be sin who had no sin. So then in him, we might become the righteousness of God. So the sinless son of God died for our sins. So we no longer need to sacrifice lambs or goats because Jesus the lamb of God paid our sin debt once and for all. 1 Peter chapter 3 verse 18 for Christ also suffered once for sins. The righteous for the unrighteous that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit. You see, understand church, our sin deserved punishment, but instead of letting us take on the wrath of God that we rightfully deserved. Jesus took it for us. He satisfied the wrath of God by dying
on the cross and that was meant for you and I to die on. And here's what happened on the cross Jesus not only paid for our He made a way for us to have a restored relationship with God. He destroyed the power of death, hell, and the grave. He defeated the power of Satan and all his demonic forces once and for all. Come on, you ought to give Jesus some praise for what he did for you on the cross. Oh, come on, he's more worthy than that. The Lamb of God took your place and my place on the cross. [APPLAUSE] That leads to the doctrine of salvation. What Christians believe? And why it matters? The doctrine of salvation. Here's the idea you need to understand about salvation. Here it goes. This is key. This is critical. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, and Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, and Christ alone. Ephesians chapter 2, verse 8 and 9 says, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not your own doing." It's not by works. It's not by works. It's the gift of God, not by any works at all. You can't earn your way to heaven. It's not by works so that no one can boast
Salvation is a free gift of God's amazing grace. You can't earn it. God gives it freely, and all we have to do is receive God's free gift of salvation. It's the pastor. How do we receive the free gift of salvation? John chapter 3, verse 16, "For God so loved the world. He saw us in total depravity. He wanted to rescue us, not because he's mad at us, because he loves us. And so God sent his only son. And that whoever believes-- everybody shout beliefs. Come on, you didn't shout at every location. Shout beliefs. Whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. Receiving begins with believing. Receiving begins with believing. Romans chapter 10, verse 9 and 10. Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe, it believes in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified. And with the mouth one confesses and is saved. You receive the free gift of God's salvation from sin by believing in your heart that Jesus died on the cross for your sin and that God the Father raised him from the dead on the third day. You believe it with your heart. And you confess it with your mouth.
Jesus is my Lord. This world's not my Lord. People aren't my Lord. Friends are not my Lord. Money's not my Lord. Sex is not my Lord. Jesus is my Lord. And you confess it with your mouth and you are saved from your sin. Pastor, is there any other way for my sins to be forgiven? Besides through Jesus, pastor's a lot of religion, a lot of different religions, a lot of different paths I've heard about. Is there any other way for my sins to be forgiven? Act chapter four, verse 12. And there is salvation in no one else. For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. The Bible teaches Jesus is the only way to be saved because Jesus was the perfect Lamb of God. And He took our place on the cross of Calvary. He paid the price for our sins on the cross. So there's not two ways we can be saved from our sin. There's not five ways to be saved from our sin. There's not an infinite number of ways to God. There's one way and His name is Jesus. Come on, somebody shout Jesus. Come on, somebody shout Jesus. Come on, somebody shout Jesus. Come on, somebody shout Jesus.
Come on, somebody shout Jesus. Come on one more time, shout Jesus. It's the only way to be saved. After salvation, the next doctrine is the doctrine of sanctification. And the core idea of this doctrine is that after you experience salvation through Jesus, the Holy Spirit of God comes to live inside of every single person who becomes a Christian. And as you surrender, What he does is he transforms your life to be more and more like Jesus. Second Thessalonians chapter two verse 13, but we are bound to give thanks to God. Always for you brethren, beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you, chose you for salvation through the sanctification by the spirit and belief in the truth. Because of total depravity, catch this. God chose you for salvation. You didn't choose God, God chose you. He drew you. You were totally depraved. God alone drew us to Jesus. And after we surrendered to God and we received the free gift of salvation, the Holy Spirit of God comes to live inside of us. And what he does in our hearts is he begins to make us more and more like Jesus, changing us, growing us.
That's what we call sanctification. We're becoming more and more and more and more like Jesus. If you, your life, you've been saved for a year or two or 10 or 20 or 30 and your life looks the same as when you got saved. I don't know if you got saved. 'Cause the Holy Spirit sanctifies. And he makes us more like Jesus. In 2026, we've been focusing a lot on the word sanctification. Our word for the years grow. We did an entire sermon series around the topic of sanctification this year. You can go to the People's Church YouTube channel. You can check out the message. I encourage you to check out the messages. The series was called Saved But Struggling. And in that series, I've talked about how your spirit is saved at salvation. But your soul and your body must still be sanctified. Sanctification is a daily journey. One day at a time, you must follow Jesus and allow the Holy Spirit to make you more and more like Jesus. Church family, I just gave you an overview of the key doctrines around the subject of sin. The question is how should we respond to this message? First, every Christian should respond by having a deep all, a deep reference, a deep gratitude for what God has done for us on that cross. We should worship Jesus for sacrificing his life
and taking our place on that cross. We should never take for granted that we were totally lost in our sin. And God drew us. He rescued us and He saved us from our sin. Secondly, some of you may be for the first time ever. You have a deep awareness of your sinfulness. You see, some of you grew up in church. You grew up knowing some things about church and God. Singing some songs, amazing grace, can quote a scripture or two. So you thought that made you a Christian. You thought 'cause your mom and your dad and your grandma and grandpa and everybody want to church, that you're a Christian. You thought because you tried to do some good things. That made you a Christian. You thought because you're not as bad as some of the other people you know, 'cause like they're really bad. I'm just kinda bad. That made you right with God. You thought if I do more good things than bad things, more good deeds than bad deeds, if I can just do a little bit more good than bad, then that would make me right with God. Or maybe you thought another religion, another ritual would make you right with God, but Muhammad was not perfect and did not, down the cross, did not rise again
for your sins, Buddha, Harry, Krishna. It was Jesus, the perfect lamb of God. Of God, and there's one way to the Father, and that's through Jesus. And today, some of you are starting to realize, I don't think I've ever received the free gift of salvation. Our received church. I've ever surrendered my life to Jesus. It made him my Lord. Father, today I thank you for your word. I thank you for this message today that helps us understand the theology of sin and how much we need to save you. I realize today that there's no power in me or my words, it's only by your spirit that you draw people. We can't come to you on our own, so I just trust the Holy Spirit to draw people to Jesus. Thank you for conviction right now at every location, conviction of the Holy Spirit, helping people see their need for a safety. And I pray today God you would grab ahold of lives and wash them clean from their sin. I pray for the heart right now that used to serve you and live for you, but got entangled back into this world. And they need to recommit their life to you today. I pray today would be a day of total full surrender to God. Have your way, I pray in Jesus' name, his eyes are still closed and heads are bowed here and you realize I don't think I'm saved today.
I thought I thought I was, I got religion, I seen some songs, I could not try to be a good person, but I have not surrendered my life to Jesus and made him my Lord. Maybe for you, you need to recommit your life to the Lord 'cause you drifted away today's the day to come back home. As I count with three, if that's you, as I just say the word three, I want you to shoot your hand in the air and I wanna lead you in a prayer to have your sins forgiven and to be made right with God. One, two, three, just lift it high in the house, they pass through this to me, that's me, see your hand, see your hand there, see your hand there, see your hand there, other today. See your hand there, see your hand there, see your hand there, see your hand there, come on, Midwest City, lift it high, Northwest, lift it high, Edmund, lift it high, Indianapolis, lift it high, come on, right there on line, click the raise your hand button or just right, that's me in the chat line, that's me, that's me, fill the chat line up.
