(upbeat music) (upbeat music) (upbeat music) (upbeat music) (upbeat music) (upbeat music) (upbeat music) - Talking about the doctrine of the Trinity. And most Christians have heard the word Trinity, but many have a hard time explaining the doctrine of the Trinity. Some people even wonder if the doctrine of the Trinity is something theologians dreamed up because the word Trinity is not found in the Bible. But just because a word is not found in the Bible does not mean it's not biblical, or doesn't carry biblical truth.
A word does not have to appear in the Bible for the doctrine it describes to be biblical. Matter of fact, the church has always used theological terms to summarize biblical truth. Did you realize the word Bible is not even in the Bible? But we use it because it accurately describes God's written word. In carnation, the word is not in the Bible. But the word is biblical because it describes the doctrine of Jesus becoming a human. You see this doctrine found in John chapter one, verse 14. Philippians chapter two, verse six through eight. Did you realize that omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent. Those words are not found in the Bible, but these words are biblical because they describe important doctrines. Omnipresent describes how God is present everywhere. You can find that in Psalm chapter 139, verses seven through 10, and Jeremiah chapter 23, verses 23 through 24. Omniscient describes how God knows everything. The word is not in the Bible, but the doctrine is. You can find it in Psalms chapter 147, verse five. Hebrews chapter four, verse 13. Omnipotent describes how God is all powerful. The word is not in the Bible, but the doctrine is. You can find it in Jeremiah chapter 32, verse number 17. What I want you to understand is we use these words because they summarize what the Bible clearly teaches. The issue is not whether the word appears in Scripture.
The issue is whether the truth appears in Scripture. And the word Trinity is not found in the Bible, but the truth is found from Genesis to Revelation. Let me give you a definition of the Trinity. There's one God who eternally exists as three distinct persons. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Notice I did not say three gods. I did not say one God wearing three different masks. You see, some people believe in traithism. This teaching says the Father, Son and the Spirit are three separate gods. Some believe in modalism. This teaching says one God merely appears in three different modes. Some believe in oraniism that this teaching says that the Son is a created being. Some believe in subordinationism. And this is a teaching that says that the Son or the Spirit is inferior in divine nature to the Father. But what we believe the Bible teaches is the Trinity. There's one God who eternally exists in three distinct persons and who share one divine nature. Now let me be super transparent as I begin to teach about the Trinity today. We will never fully understand the Trinity. Because we're talking about an infinite God with our finite minds. If we could completely explain an eternal,
all powerful, all knowing God, he wouldn't be much of a God. Come on, I'm from We Woke Her, y'all. He wouldn't be much if I could explain it all to you. He wouldn't be much of a God. Here's the reality of life. It's the reality of life. There are many things we accept without fully comprehending them. We cannot explain exactly how our brain creates memories. We can't exactly explain how gravity works at its deepest level, but I believe in it 'cause I'm not jumping off the building today. Believe in it. with just a single fertilized cell. We understand these things are true without understanding them exhaustively, and the same is true of God. We cannot explain or understand everything about God. Trying to fully explain the Trinity is like trying to pour the ocean into a coffee cup. The problem is not with the ocean, is with the size of the coffee cup. And in the same way, God's nature is not limited by our understanding. Our finite minds simply cannot contain the fullness of an infinite, all powerful, all knowing God. There are just some truths we just can't fully comprehend because he's God, and we're not. So our goal today is not to understand everything
about God, everything about the Trinity, but because that's just not humanly possible. Our goal is to believe everything God has revealed about himself, even if we don't fully understand it. Today I wanna teach you what God has revealed to us about the Trinity. All my note takers, come on, get ready to take some good notes today. Number one is this, there is only one true God. This truth is the foundation of everything. Christianity has never taught that there are three gods. Christianity is uncompromisingly monotheistic, which means we believe there's only one God. Our worship belongs to one God alone. Everything else must fit inside of this truth. For from the very first pages of scripture unto the very last, the Bible declares there's only one true God. Deuteronomy chapter six, verse four. Here, oh Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. That this verse is called the Shama and faithful Jewish people recited it every day. That they lived in a world filled with false gods. Egypt had many gods. Babylon had many gods. The Canaanites had many gods. Every surrounding nation worship a different collection of gods, but Israel stood apart because they worship the one true God. The New Testament also clearly tells us there is one God.
Notice this in first Corinthians chapter eight, verse number four. It says, so then about eating food sacrificed to idols. We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world and that there is no God but one. For even if there are so-called gods, little G, whether in heaven or on earth as indeed, there are many gods and many lords. Yet for us, for us Christians, we know there is but one God, the Father from whom all things came and from whom we live. And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. One God, Ephesians chapter four, verse six. One God and Father of all, who is over all through all and in all. James chapter two and verse number 19. You believe there is one God good. Even the demons believe that and shudder. Even the demons who used to be in heaven, they were built. They got kicked out of heaven. They believe there's one God because they used to be in heaven and the Bible teaches monotheism. Every truth about the Trinity begins with this unshakeable foundation. There is one God. There is one King worthy of all worship, all glory, all honor and all praise. There is one true God who has eternally revealed himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Let's dig a little deeper into this mystery
that God has revealed to us. And that is God is three and one. God is three and one. The Trinity is one of the- The Bible clearly reveals there is one God who eternally exists as three distinct persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Again, I'm acknowledging it. We don't fully understand it. But we believe it because God has revealed it to us through his word. But as we study the Bible, we see the Old Testament emphasizes God's one-ness. But also shows us the complexity of how our one God is exist in three persons. You can flip all the way back to the very first book of the Bible, the very first chapter of the Bible. And God begins just to reveal himself as one God in three persons. Genesis chapter one, verse 26. It says, "Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image.'" In our likeness. It just gives us, "Let us one God existing in three persons. In our image one God existing in three persons." And then you flip a little further left in the scripture over to Genesis chapter one, verses one through three. And you see that the spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And that God the Father began to speak these words,
"Let there be light." You see the Trinity had played all the way back at creation. And you flip over to the New Testament, John chapter one, verses one through two. It says, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. The Word Jesus was with God from the very beginning of creation because God is three in one. Father, Son, Holy Spirit, John chapter one, verse 14. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only son who came from the Father full of grace and truth. In this verse we see that the Word Jesus Christ came to earth from the Father because God is three in one. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Matthew chapter three, verse 16 and 17. As soon as Jesus was water, was water baptized, he came up out of the water at that very moment heaven open and he saw the spirit of God descending like a dove and a lightning on him and a voice came from heaven that said, "This is my son whom I love with him. I am well pleased." We see Jesus getting water baptized. We see the Holy Spirit descending on him and we see the Father speaking from heaven because God is three in one. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. John chapter 15 verse 26, when the advocate comes, this is Jesus speaking.
When he's talking about the Holy Spirit, when the advocate, when the Holy Spirit comes, whom I will send from the Father, the spirit of truth, who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. Gee, he'll testify about me. God is three in one. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Matthew chapter 28 verse 19. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. God is three in one. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Second Corinthians chapter 13 verse 14, may the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God, talking about the Father and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Be with you all. God is three in one. Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Look at your neighbor today and just tell them, we're going deeper today. Go ahead and tell them, yeah, we're going deeper. Come on, don't you sleep with your eyes open. You're going to learn something today, all right? All right, here we go. Number three, number three, number three. Let's dig a little deeper into this mystery. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are each fully God.
God is one in essence, but three in persons. The Father is not the Son. The Son is not the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not the Father. They are distinct, yet never divided. Equal, yet never competing. They're completely united and never confused. They're one God and three persons. The Father is fully God. John chapter 6, verse 27, do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will- approval. Romans chapter 15 verse 6, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Father is God. Philippians chapter 2 verse number 11, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father. The Father is God, and then that verse says, and Jesus Christ is Lord because the Son is fully God. John chapter 1 verse 1 through 3, let's go back to these verses. This is a very key, because there's some key verses for this teaching today. This is in the beginning, was the Word, and the Word, what Jesus the Word is Jesus, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made. Without Him nothing was made that has been made.
Okay, let's break down these verses together. The Bible says the Word, Jesus, the Word was. So before there was time, Jesus already existed. Before there were angels, Jesus already existed. Before Genesis chapter 1, Jesus already existed. The Word was, then John says, the Word was with God. That means Jesus is distinct from the Father. Then He says the Word was God. That means Jesus possesses the very nature of God. Church, don't miss how amazing this is. Jesus is not the Father, but Jesus is fully God. Tied as chapter 2 verse 13, while we wait for the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. Second Peter chapter 1 verse 1, Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ to those through the righteousness of our God, our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours. Jesus is God, the Father is God and the Holy Spirit is fully God. The Holy Spirit is often misunderstood by many people. They think the Holy Spirit is wind, a force, an emotion, an it, or a simply power. Some are weird and think He's a ghost, oh Lord, He's a ghost. But the Bible doesn't call the Holy Spirit an it, a force, an emotion, or just power. The Bible teaches us that the Holy Spirit is God. Let's look at some examples. Acts chapter 5 verse number 3 and 4. Then Peter said to an anise, "Hise it that Satan has so
filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy, you lied to the Holy Spirit, and kept for yourself some of the money you received from the land." Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to human beings. You have lied to God. You lied to the Holy Spirit. You lied to God. You've lied to the Holy Spirit, who is God. First Corinthians chapter 3 verse 16, do you not know that yourselves are God's temple? And that God's spirit dwells in your midst. God's spirit lives inside of every single Christian. The Holy Spirit is God. That's how we can become more like Jesus Christ, because the Holy Spirit is God lives inside of every Christian. Second Corinthians chapter 3 verse 17 and 18. Now the Lord is the Spirit. And what the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces, contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into the image with ever increasing glory, which comes, kisses, which comes from the Lord. Who is the Spirit? The Holy Spirit is Lord. He is God. Understand this number four, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit have distinct roles.
The Godhead, when I use the terminology, the Godhead, I'm referring to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. yet work together in perfect harmony. Because our God has always existed in a perfect relationship before there was a world to create. Before there were sinners to redeem, there was a perfect love, perfect fellowship, and perfect unity within the Trinity. Scripture highlights the different works, the different functions, and the different roles of the Godhead. And I want us just to look for a moment at the different roles of the Godhead in salvation. Let's begin with salvation. The Trinity in salvation. Ephesians chapter one is a great chapter to read. It really shows so clearly the function of the Godhead, just so clearly, so it's a great passage of Scripture. They'll just clearly show you how the Godhead, just the distinct ministries, and how they work together to accomplish salvation. So right there in Ephesians chapter one, the Father planned salvation. Ephesians one verse four and five. He chose us, it says, he predestined us. The Son accomplishes salvation. Ephesians chapter one verse seven. In hymn we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.
The Holy Spirit applies salvation. Ephesians chapter one verse 13. Having believed you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit. Another way we could describe their distinct ministries working together at salvation is, the Father chose us. The Son redeemed us. The Spirit sealed us. Another way we could say it is the Father planned and sent. The Son reveals and redeems and the Holy Spirit into wells. And in powers, oh we can say the Father planned our salvation. The Son purchased our salvation and the Holy Spirit guarantees our salvation. Come on somebody give God praise. The Godhead working together at salvation. I'm just wanting you to see that the Godhead has different functions but work together to accomplish salvation. We see the Godhead working together all throughout scripture. Let me show you how the Godhead works together. The Trinity in creation. The Father spoke creation into existence. Genesis chapter one verse three. The Son created all things. John chapter one verse three, Colossians chapter one verse 16. The Holy Spirit gave life and order to creation. Genesis chapter one verse two.
Job chapter 33 verse four. Well we can say it this way. The Father designed creation. The Son brought creation into being and the Spirit filled creation with life. Let me show you the Trinity at Jesus' baptism. We read it just a little bit earlier. In Matthew chapter three verse 16 and 17. The Father declared his approval. This is my beloved Son with who I am well pleased. The Son submitted to baptism. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. The Holy Spirit anointed Jesus for ministry. It says there that the Spirit of God descended on him like a dove. Or we can say it this way. The Father affirmed. The Son obeyed. The Spirit empowered. Let me show you the Trinity in prayer. Ephesians chapter two verse 18. For through him Jesus. We both have access to the Father by one Spirit. The Father receives our prayers. The Son gives us access. It says through him. And the Holy Spirit enables our access. It says by one Spirit. Or we can say it this way.
You pray to the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit. Let me show you the Trinity in our adoption in Genesis in Galatians chapter number four verses four through six. It talks about our adoption into the family of God. The Father adopted us. The Son redeemed us. The Spirit assures us. The Godhead has distinct roles yet work together in perfect harmony. Number five. The mystery of the Trinity. The Trinity calls us to worship. Not just to wonder. The Trinity isn't just a doctrine to study. It's a God to adore. Yes, it stretches our minds. But even more, it should stir our hearts. grasp, because God is infinite and we are finite, it's just too complex, he's God. The mystery of the Trinity does not have to weaken our faith, it should deepen our faith and are all of our great God. It should remind us that our God is bigger than our logic greater than our imagination and higher than our understanding. In Ephesians chapter number one, we talked about how Paul gave us such rich theology that clearly shows the Godhead's distinct ministries, working together to accomplish salvation. But what I also love about Ephesians chapter one is Paul doesn't explain the Trinity to merely expand our minds, he explains the Trinity to enlarge our worship. In Ephesians chapter one verse six, he says, "But to the praise of His glorious grace, Ephesians chapter one verse twelve, He says to the praise of His glory, Ephesians chapter one verse 14, he says, "To the praise of His glory, when heaven reveals to us who God is, we should worship and not just wonder." Don't get so focused on wondering about God's mystery and you miss
worshiping God's majesty. You don't have to understand everything about God before you worship Him, just like you don't have to understand everything about the ocean, before you swim in the water. You don't have to understand everything about the universe, before you gaze at the beauty of the stars. You don't need to understand everything about the Trinity, before you worship the Trinity. If you could completely explain God, He would not be worthy of your worship. So you can't fully grasp God's greatness, but you should give Him glory. When your mind runs out of answers about God, don't let your heart run out of worship for God. When you can't explain His greatness, you should praise His greatness. When you can't comprehend His ways, you should still celebrate His words. When you don't understand what God's doing, you should still worship who He is. The Trinity calls us to worship, not just to wonder. Somebody ought to worship your great God. Come on, He's a mystery. He's amazing. He's awesome. I can't comprehend you, but I worship you. My mind can't wrap my mind, can't wrap my myself around your glory, but you're worthy of worship. You're too majestic for me to understand fully, but I worship you. I magnify you. You're still God. I'm not going to just wonder, I'm going to worship church. I'm going to magnify my God. You should be all in all of your God. I said, you should be in all of your God. He's beyond comprehension. He's worthy of your worship. That's what the Trinity ought to call you to do. They say, God, you're so big, and you're so awesome, and you're so amazing. You're beyond my understanding, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. And it just causes me to say, I love you, and I'll worship you. Thank you for being bigger than my comprehension. You are the Lily of the Valley. You are the Pride and Morning Star. Come on, you are the Waymaker. You are the Creator. You are the beginning and the end. You are the Alpha and the Omega. I can't understand everything about you, but I praise you. I give you glory. I give you honor because you're God, and you're God all by yourself. There's none like you. There's none beside you. You are God. That's what the Trinity ought to call you to do. I'll worship you because you're God. Father, I give you praise today. Thank you for being a mighty God. Thank you for being beyond our comprehension. Thank you that I can't fully explain the mystery of the Trinity because you're God, and you're big, and you're awesome, and you're amazing. And I pray you draw people to you. I pray it calls us to worship, but not just to wonder. You're magnificent. You're holy. You're righteous. We worship your holy name. His eyes are still closed and heads are still bowed.
Today you need to turn your life over to Jesus Christ. I'm going to ask Pastor Josh just to come his eyes or close them heads are bowed. Lead us in an altar call for you to give your life to Jesus Christ. I close. If you're here today and you don't have a relationship. good works in your life is to say yes to Jesus, to put your faith, your trust in Him, to turn away from your sins and turn towards God. And God is faithful and true to forgive you of all your sin. If you're here today and maybe you haven't put your faith in Jesus Christ for the first time or maybe you need to rededicate your life to Jesus, you've been pursuing the world, you've been running towards the things of this world, and you need to return to the Lord and rededicate your life to Jesus. I'm going to count to three, and I want to invite all across this room, if that's you, you need to rededicate your life to Jesus, or you need to say yes to Jesus for your very first time, if you would put your hand up in the air and put it right back down on the count of three, one, two, three, hands up all across this room, people saying yes to Jesus, people rededicating their life to Jesus, hands up all across this room, thank you so much, I see those hands, see that hand, thank you so much, I see that hand, thank you so much. Let's pray for those who just said yes to Jesus, Father, we come before you right now. And we turn away from our sin, Father, we turn away from the ways of this world. And God, right now, we proclaim that you are our Lord and you're our Savior, that you died and you paid the price for our sins and you rose again three days later. And because we place our faith and our trust in you, we have eternal life in you, Father, we thank you, God, that this point forward, you're with us every single moment of our life. We thank you and we pray this in the name of Jesus. Amen, come on, can we celebrate with those who just said yes to Jesus? We celebrate with you. What an amazing decision that you made. Come on, wasn't that a powerful message from pastor, so good, so powerful. God is worthy of our worship, no matter if we understand Him or not, God is worthy of our praise. He's powerful, He's a big God, He is worthy of all honor and all glory. And if you would stand across this room, we're gonna take the next couple moments and we're gonna worship God, the God that's beyond our understanding. We're gonna worship the Lord, come on, will you lift up your voice and let's worship God today? Let's worship God, the God that's beyond our understanding. We're gonna worship God, the God that's
beyond our understanding. We're gonna worship God. We're gonna worship God, the God that's beyond our understanding. We're gonna worship God, the God that's beyond our understanding. Come on, He's worthy of our worship, isn't He? We're so grateful for who God is. If you are newer to the church, we just want to say welcome again to people's church. You're among some of the kindest, nicest people in all of Oklahoma City. We want to encourage you, give us a year of your life, get plugged in, a 10-year-old track, a 10-church regularly, find a small group, and watch what God does in your life. I want to encourage you, stick around to continue to worship the Lord today as we worship the God that is beyond our understanding who's worthy of our worship. Come on, we say this every Sunday, we say that we're family. Come on, will you say it with me? We're what? We're family. Have a great Sunday. We'll see you next week. (upbeat music)
