It's been a few minutes since I've been, a few couple months I think since I've been here. All right. Thank you Jesus for that worship. It was so good that last song is one of my favorites. I can barely ever hold it together every time I hear it. And so I'm just gonna get right into it. The title of my message tonight is called faith is substance.
And I believe a lot of us here in this room, myself included, I just celebrated nine years clean and sober from drugs and alcohol, but not only from that, from the mindsets, from unbelief, from negativity, from insecurities, from low self-esteem. I used to have a bad stutter problem, praise God, praying in the Holy Spirit has actually pretty much taken that away unless I'm getting weird and awkward sometimes, but which I'm good at too. But faith is substance. And like I said, we know a little bit about substances around here. That my foundational scripture is Hebrews 11.1, it says now faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen. And so substance means something different when you have a history of addiction. Many of us know what it's like to reach for a substance because we wanted something to change inside of us. We wanted peace, we wanted courage, we wanted the pain to stop, we wanted our minds to slow down. We wanted to forget about some things that have happened to us. We wanted to just feel something or maybe we didn't want to feel anything at all. And so that substance that we used to take, we put faith into that substance and it promised to change an internal condition
that was going on inside of us. But Hebrews 11 says that now faith is our new substance. And God has a new substance for all of us instead of now reaching for what used to numb us, now we reach for Jesus. And that last song was such an appropriate song. It's like now instead of wanting meth, I want Jesus. Now instead of wanting alcohol, I want Jesus. Give me Jesus instead of the things that I used to think brought me peace, brought me peace. instead and you know faith isn't something that you have to manufacture because the more that you consume Jesus the more that your faith will begin to rise in you and I know a lot of people can be like man our faith is low faith isn't an easy thing to come by it's something that just comes naturally we a lot of people here in this in in East Tennessee they're gonna tell you to you believe in God yes I believe in God I'm a Christian I'm a man or I'm a woman of faith but a lot of times we don't even really know what that means and so um before we go any further I wanted to find faith because faith is more than just believing in God James to not tell us you believe there is one God you do well even the demons believe that in tremble so biblical faith cannot simply mean that I believe there is a God faith is trust reliance confidence in God that causes me to put my weight every bit of the weight that I have on my life on him it's like if we had a chair sitting up right here we could see this chair sitting here right and we could have the faith that that chair could hold us but until we actually sit on the chair we really can really have no true faith in the in the chair and there comes a moment when you actually have to put your faith on God God I'm putting all of my eggs in your basket and I trust you to care for them the way that they need to be cared for it's not just saying that Jesus is real it's putting trusting him with my past my future my recovery my family my finances every part of my life trusting him when I don't understand what he's doing trusting him when uh uh when things don't go the way that I think that they should be going no one that he is in control of my life even when it looks like everything has been as felt falling apart I've got the Lord my life nine years ago uh September 3rd and I'm gonna tell you it's not been a perfect picnic there's been tragedy there's been grief there's been loss I've went through a
lot of things in my life and if I didn't have faith to stand on I would have fallen to pieces if I wasn't able to go and take a little bit of faith to get me through what I'm going through I would have went right back there to the trap house putting needles in my arm I had to learn that even even when when I got when I got so shook within myself because things happened that I never thought what happened I had to make sure that instead of going to the meth pop I would go and I would take a dose of Jesus and we're have to get to a place where we understand that that is the substance that we are on now because God says um that faith says God is well I'm sorry Hebrews 11 says but without faith it is impossible to please him for he who comes to God must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him this faith walk isn't it's it's it's it's not like a blind walk it is knowing that you are walking with someone the whole way and he's not going to let you down no matter what happens faith is what makes your pursuit genuine your trust your your your reliance on him your expectation that God's going to meet you without that foundation it's hard to please God it's not that it's hard to please God it's just like this is a relationship and it itself cannot function if you don't have faith in him if you start putting your faith in your job and your finances and your money and your own strength you're going to let yourself down every single time it's like trying to save a friendship when you don't even actually believe there's a person there faith says God isn't because he is I come to him and I can depend on him and that's important in recovery for because for many of us our old substance became something that we put our faith in I should be on a ton of stuff I have a gallon by zip lock bag full of peels I need peels wake me up had faith in them to wake me up peels to put me sleep I had faith in them peels to put me to sleep I had faith in them Xanaxes to calm my anxiety faith in that mess of make me crazy but when life came too heavy I reached for what I believed could change how I felt I'm hurting, I reach for Jesus. And so I'm going to talk about something else that I think is important. So if we're talking about that faith is a as a as a substance, that means we're talking about consuming something, right? We ingest something, we take something, we bring something in to change the way that we feel. And there's an old saying that you are what you eat. If you eat a bunch of junk food, that junk food becomes the sales of your body. It actually becomes who you are. When you eat healthy food, it changes who you are. It changes the chemical chemistry of your body. And so does taking Jesus. So we have to be careful after we give our lives to the Lord to pay attention to what we are
actually consuming. And how do we consume now through our eyes, through our ears, what we're watching, the conversations that we participate in. Because whatever you continually consume will eventually become who of what you are. And it'll become what you believe. If you continually rehearse everything that could go wrong in your life, anxiety is going to grow. If you continually consume yourself on fear all the time, fear will grow. If you consume yourself with hopelessness, hopelessness will grow. Romans 10, 17 tells us, so faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. And that's a really awesome scripture because it said faith comes, faith comes when you call upon faith. And that means when you don't have a lot of faith in a moment, you don't have to stay there. You can. So I don't know what you've been through tonight. I know what you're going through sitting in those jail cells right now, but God has a dose of faith for you to lift you up in the moment that you are in right now. And so we're going to talk about consuming something. And Jesus said, everybody knows what communion is? It's where you get the, you get the grape juice and you get the cracker. He said something in John 635. He said to them, "I am the bread of life and he who comes to me shall never hunger. And he who believes in me shall never thirst." And so Jesus just doesn't give us bread to eat. Yes, he will provide our foods, but he gives us our daily bread. So when we say that prayer, that Lord's prayer, give us this day our daily bread, that is a dose of Jesus every day, a word from, from his word, a spoken word that we hear somewhere. And so later in John 6, he even says something stronger. It sounds a little crazy sometimes. It says, "Then Jesus said to them, most assuredly, I say to you, that unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up in the last day for my flesh is food indeed and my blood is drink indeed and he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I'm in him." You know, a lot of people heard Jesus say that day and they did not understand because they were thinking about them things in a carnal way instead of a spiritual way. And I used to not even really be able to understand this version. I would meditate it and meditate on it and meditate on it and meditate on it. And God said, "Page, when you eat something, it turns your real flesh into something that it doesn't need to be. If I eat a bunch of little daddy cakes, my flesh is going to turn into little daddy cakes. But if I start eating
the flesh of Jesus, if I start drinking the blood of Jesus, then my flesh is eventually going to be like Jesus' flesh and I'm going to look more like him. And then the more of I eat of Jesus, the more that I consume him, then I don't have a hunger for the things of the world anymore. I'm not thirsty for men. I'm not thirsty for drugs. I'm not thirsty for the applause of men. I'm not hungry for things that make me sick anymore. I'm not hungry for things that are temporary and do not matter. I put my treasures up in heaven by the way that I do, the more that I eat, the flesh of Jesus, the more that I'm not consumed and rolled by my own human flesh. Jesus is showing us something here. He told us to do this. Take the blood, eat the bread in remembrance of me, but I don't think a lot of people even understand what we do. Why we do that? We took that so that he could heal our broken bodies, so that he could heal our minds, the word drugs that destroyed our minds, when we had been through trauma, when we were our little kids, the blood of Jesus, the cleanses of our sins, the body to heal our broken bodies. Y'all made people I've known that of the body of Jesus Christ. And their flesh becomes healed. It becomes something new. So I pray that the next time that you take, you don't have to do that just sometimes. I think we make it some ritual thing that we don't really even understand. You can take that in your house every single day and come to understand the reason why we eat the body of Jesus and we drink his blood so that we can be in communion with him. Think about it, calm union, coming into union with Jesus. Sharing together with him, participating in him, I consume Jesus every day. I consume his word, I consume his presence, I worship, I pray, I sit with him, I listen to him. He is my friend, he is my comforter,
he is my father, he is my everything. He is my one thing. He is my one thing. And when you can make sure that you get to that place where nothing matters, the whole world can fall to pieces, as long as I know that I have him, I'm gonna be okay. 'Cause there is nothing, nothing in this world, no human being, not even my own children that can satisfy me the way that he can. But the thing about it is, is we have to break free from what the world tells us that we're supposed to consume and come to an understanding, come to an awakening that the things that we have been feasting on all of our lives has brought us nothing but death and destruction, mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally, relationally, and we have to drop all of those things and be completely consumed in him. And it's gonna take some practice, and it's all gonna happen overnight, but you gotta start working at it to fulfill so that you're not hungry for anything else but him. I sit with him, I remember what he's done for me. And as I start to consume him, faith starts rising. The more I consume, the more I know him, the more I trust him, and the more of my whole weight and my whole body and my whole life that I'm willing to put on him. But then we're gonna talk about a thirst that actually is underneath the thirst that we said, and it brings me to another encounter that Jesus had
with a thirsty woman in John 4. He meets this Samaritan woman at the well, and she goes there to get a natural drink of water because she's thirsty, but Jesus knew that there was something actually deeper that she was thirsting for. He came up and he pretty much tells her her whole life. He says, I know that you've had five husbands and the man that you live with now isn't even your husband now, and she tells him his whole life. And Jesus tells her this, he tells her. He said, he's gonna give her some water. He says, anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again, talking about that natural water. But those who drink the water I give will never thirst again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life. And you know that eternal life word right there, a lot of people think that, well, I'm gonna get that so I can go to heaven one day. Here's another thing right now. We're not all sitting around on this earth waiting to give it to the devil when Jesus takes us out of heaven. We can experience heaven on earth right now. And you know, every time I get up here to preach, because I'm seated in heavenly places right now, before I put a microphone in my hand,
I say, daddy, I'm gonna come up here with sit beside you. Let's let Holy Spirit go down there and fill that body and preach that word, because I'm there all the time. That word is zoe, that means the God kind of life, the divine kind of life that we can live while we are here on this earth. We don't live every day waiting for God to take us out one day. We learn what our purpose is today. We learn that we can walk in peace and happiness and joy. And we can have that zoe top of life every day in our life. We don't have to live miserable on the earth. That is a lie. I gotta finish this. She said, she's like, please, sir, give me this water. And then I'll never be thirsty again. And I don't have to walk all the way over this well and get this water. And so when we look at this through how we are recovering, Jesus is talking about water, but there's a principle under this that we need to understand that there is a thirst underneath the thirst. We thought we were thirsty for drugs. We thought we were thirsty for alcohol. We thought we were thirsty for another relationship. We thought we needed something to numb us, to help us survive another night wherever we are. But what if underneath all of those things
was a thirst that none of those things were capable of satisfying, and that was what we could get by drinking of Jesus. He says, "Anyone who drinks this water "will become thirsty again. "Every time you drink a drink, "you're gonna want another drink. "Every time you use, you're gonna wanna use again. "This never ending, it will never stop. "Every time you get into a relationship, "you'll eventually need somebody else "to make you feel valuable again. "We know what's going on in America. "A lot of times you get into a relationship "when the new wears off, you're ready, "something else to make you feel different again." And that's something we have to be careful with in recovery, as we always want to change how we feel, but we actually have to know the truth instead, because Jesus tells this woman something different. When she gets down there, and he says, after he tells about the living water that is consuming him, that brings us everything we could ever want, Jesus says, "The time is coming, "and deed it is here now." When true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way, for God is spirit.
So those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. And so he's saying that today, when we came in here today, this worship was amazing. You could feel the Holy Spirit. I love getting impartations of people and feeling the fire of God going inside of me. That is good, that is spirit. But there's gonna come a day when you leave this altar this week, when you leave the way you feel when the Holy Spirit atmosphere with all of us, sometimes there's something that happens that instead of worshiping him in spirit, you're gonna have to, I know that I have to worship him in truth as well. It's truth as well. We cannot bring Christianity down to emotionalism. Well, I don't feel it today. Well, some days you're not gonna feel it. I don't wake up every day and look at my husband and be like, "My God." No, some days I gotta wake up and say, "Pays, you're married." There's not emotional and butterflies and stuff every single time. So when the new wears off and you come to church and like, "Man, that message just didn't hit this time." That doesn't mean the Holy Spirit isn't doing its job. It's time for you to start worshiping him in truth.
Even when a flat tire comes, we still worship him in truth. When you get that court case that you didn't think was what didn't turn out the way you thought, "It doesn't matter, I'm still gonna worship him." God is still true. He is still able. Faith worships according to truth. And so we love coming here and feeling the Holy Spirit, but we have to know that when life doesn't look exactly the way we think it does, we still have to worship him in truth. Y'all, my time is up and I love you guys. Thank you, Lord, for blessing my brothers and sisters. I thank you, Jesus, amen, amen. (audience applauding) - Amen, that was good, that was good. I love teaching on faith especially. Have y'all ever thought, man, it's really easy to have fear, but really hard to have faith. Have you ever heard people say fear is the opposite of faith? Can I tell you, I used to believe that, but do you know what fear is? Fear is believing something's gonna happen before it does. But do you know what faith is? Faith is believing something's gonna happen before it does. So guys, if you can have fear, you can have faith. It's just, what are you looking at? What voice are you listening to? What are you putting, what substance are you feeding on? 'Cause if you can have fear, I guarantee you,
you can have faith. So awesome, thank you, Paige, for that. That was incredible. We love when she blesses us with her words. So if y'all would stand, we're gonna close out with the serenity prayer. So together we start with God. Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace. Taking as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it. Trusting that you will make all things right if I surrender to your will so that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with you forever in the next. Amen.
