Coming to Life: Ruth

The story of Ruth, set during Israel’s tumultuous time of the judges around 1100 B.C., follows a young Moabite woman who shows incredible loyalty to her mother-in-law, Naomi, after both of their husbands die. After deciding to return to Bethlehem, Ruth defies societal expectations by choosing to follow Naomi, despite the challenges of being a foreigner in a new land. Once in Bethlehem, they rely on the gleaning law, which allows the poor to collect leftover grain, to survive. Here, Ruth encounters Boaz, a wealthy relative who acts as a kinsman redeemer, showing kindness and respect towards her.

As Ruth and Boaz develop their relationship, Naomi encourages Ruth to approach Boaz in a culturally significant act that symbolizes her desire for protection and marriage. Boaz is willing to redeem Ruth but must first address a closer relative’s claim. After successfully securing Ruth’s hand, they marry, leading to the restoration of both Naomi and Ruth. Their story symbolizes God’s faithfulness and love, paralleling the broader narrative of God’s commitment to His people. Ruth’s lineage eventually leads to King David and, ultimately, to Jesus Christ, emphasizing that even amidst Israel’s failures, God remains steadfast in His love and redemption.
