Coming to Life: 1 Kings

The book of 1 Kings begins with the reign of Solomon, the third king of Israel and son of David. Solomon’s wisdom and wealth were unparalleled, and he built a magnificent temple for the Lord. However, despite his wisdom, Solomon’s alliances with foreign nations led to his downfall as his many wives introduced idol worship, turning his heart away from God. After his death, the kingdom was divided into two: the Northern Kingdom (Israel) led by Jeroboam, and the Southern Kingdom (Judah) led by Solomon’s son, Rehoboam. Both kingdoms faced turmoil, with Israel ruled by 19 kings over 209 years and Judah by 20 kings over 345 years, most of whom did evil in the eyes of the Lord.
