Today we come to the final book in the Books of the Law, Deuteronomy, which is really Moses’ last opportunity to speak to the people before they step into the Promised Land.

By this point, everything they’ve experienced—the rescue from Egypt, the wandering in the wilderness, the lessons learned the hard way—has led them to this moment. Moses takes time to walk them back through their story, reminding them of what God has done, the commands He has given, and the pattern they’ve lived through as a people.

But this isn’t just a recap of events. It’s a moment where everything comes into focus.

Moses is helping them see that the life in front of them will be shaped by the choices they make. He explains that following God leads to life, blessing, and purpose, while turning away leads to struggle and separation. What stands out is that these commands were never meant to burden them, but to guide them into a life that actually works the way God intended.

At the same time, Moses is realistic about human nature. He knows they won’t always get it right, and he speaks honestly about what will happen when they drift away, including the consequences they will face. Yet even in that, there is a promise woven in that God will not abandon them and will make a way to restore them.

As his time comes to an end, Moses passes leadership to Joshua, reminding the people that while leadership changes, God’s presence does not. The book closes with Moses’ death and a reflection on his life, but it also leaves the sense that the story is far from over.

What makes this so meaningful is that it isn’t just about a group of people standing on the edge of the Promised Land. It reflects something we all experience at different points in our lives, where we are faced with decisions about whether we will trust God and follow His lead or rely on ourselves.

Welcome to Coming to Life, a one-year journey through God's Word. My name is Katie Hawk. We are about to study the fifth and final book written by Moses. This book wraps up the books of the law. Just to recap, the Israelites were chosen as God's special people. They were freed from slavery and given the Ten Commandments. God wanted to be near them, so they built the tabernacle and he taught them how to enter it. The Israelites then started their journey toward the incredible land flowing with milk and honey that God promised them. But their fear and complaining caused them to not be able to enter it. Moses cannot enter the land either, as we saw in the book of Numbers when he sinned against God. The Israelites are camped just across the river from the promised land, and Joshua, their newly appointed leader, is preparing to take them in. Moses has a few things he wants to say before they go. This is where we are when the book of Deuteronomy begins. The name Deuteronomy means repeated law, which makes sense because there is a lot of that in this book. Moses begins with a reminder of everything the Israelites went through, sort of like I just did, only in greater detail. You have to remember that the people who were about to enter the promised land did not personally experience the slavery in Egypt or God's miraculous provisions. Moses wants them to understand. He wants them to know God so that they can trust God. The most important thing he wants them to realize is that they have a choice. They can choose to follow God and receive a life filled with blessings, or they can choose to not follow God and receive death and despair. Sadly, their parents chose death and despair. Moses is hoping that this generation chooses differently.

Moses reminds them that to follow God they must be obedient. He repeats to them the laws that were part of the covenant. There are a bunch, although most of them you have read before in Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers. My favorite verse in this book is Deuteronomy 10, 12. For your own good. We get so wrapped up in the law, especially when you read a book like this. It seems like God just has so many rules, and they seem harsh. But those rules are for your good. Those rules represent the incredible love God has for you. As does the fact that the people so far have not held up their end of the agreement, but God has. He has been faithful to his promises despite the complaints and disobedience. Moses wants this generation to see that and choose to love God in return. He is reminding them of how to do that. He is also teaching them how to love others and how to worship God through things like their tithes. After all of the reminders, he then directs them to hold a special ceremony once they cross the Jordan and enter into the promised land, where the tribes split up on two mountains and they shout the blessings and curses of the Lord. This will reaffirm their commitment to God. Now Moses was a great prophet. He knew that sadly Israel was going to eventually become disobedient. He spoke to them about being scattered and exiled when that happened. But he encourages them by promising them that God would bring them back together. He would restore their land and prosper them once again and give them a new heart, one that allows them to truly love God the way he deserves. All of these incredible prophecies happen later in the Bible, although many theologians think the new heart for Israel is still something coming in the future. Moses then officially inaugurates Joshua as the new leader of Israel, and he finishes his message by teaching Israel a song, which was kind of like a national anthem, yet it

talked about Israel turning their backs on God and the consequences they would face. He calls them foolish, unwise, fat, and perverse, and describes the calamities that would come against them. So it's an interesting anthem, but it ended with a promise. that God would make atonement for his people. This is an awesome promise because God does that with his son, Jesus Christ. Moses then dies and the book is closed with a beautiful tribute, probably written by Joshua. So the books of the law end, but the story is far from over. I hope that the information shared today helps you grasp how interesting the Bible is so that you develop a passion for reading it.
