Coming to Life: Books of the Law

Today we’re looking at the first five books of the Bible—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. You might hear these called the Books of the Law, or sometimes the Torah, which simply means “teachings.”

These books are where everything really begins.

They were traditionally written by Moses, with the very end of Deuteronomy likely finished by Joshua, and they lay the foundation for the entire rest of the Bible. This is where we see creation, the first moments of brokenness, the flood, and the lives of people like Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It’s also where we see God rescue His people from slavery in Egypt, give the Ten Commandments, and begin to show them how to live.

At first, some of this can feel like a lot—especially when you get into the laws and instructions—but there’s a bigger picture happening here.

These aren’t just random stories or rules.

They’re showing us who God is.

You start to see His patience, His mercy, and His willingness to stay with people even when they keep messing up. At the same time, you also see something else clearly—people can’t seem to get it right on their own. No matter how many laws are given, something is still missing.

And that’s the point.

These books are not just about what happened—they’re pointing forward to what’s coming. They’re showing us why we need a Savior and preparing the way for Jesus from the very beginning.

So as you read through these, don’t get stuck in the details.

Instead, keep asking yourself: what is this showing me about God… and what does that mean for me?

Because from the very start, this has always been about relationship.
