You're Sleeping But You're Not Resting | POP Podcast Ep. 5
"Some people are sleeping that still aren't resting."
In Episode 5 of the POP Podcast, Mike and Charles get hot, humble, open, and transparent about the most counter-cultural thing they do, rest. In a culture that glorifies the grind and wears exhaustion like a badge of honor, they make the case that rest isn't laziness. It's a gift, a rhythm, and a commandment.
In this episode:
→ Why sleep is part of rest, but not the whole thing
→ The "engine of insecurity" that drives so many of us, and what it costs
→ Why you can be wildly successful and have completely the wrong motive
→ Why the Sabbath is the commandment nobody talks about
→ How God modeled rest in creation (we were made to work FROM rest, not FOR it)
→ The Sabbatical that started Relationship Goals, and the POP friendship
→ What rest actually looks like, practically, week to week
→ "You do all the work for the people, but the people just want you"
If you're exhausted, running on coffee and adrenaline, successful but unable to enjoy it, this one's for you.
We believe in Progression Over Perfection. Through theology, therapy, and community, God can turn trauma into triumph.
You have tuned in to the best podcast that has ever been made in history. Come on somebody. Today we're talking about rest. And how many people could use rest and a lot of people automatically thought about sleep. Sleep and rest aren't the same thing. But some people are sleeping that still aren't resting. Culture promotes and even glorifies this badge of honor of I'm absolutely cooked. Like I'm working hard because I'm trying to get you this thing or I'm doing this babe because I'm trying to help us. You do all the work for the people but the people just want you. The reason I'm still actually joyful, not cynical, believe in people is because of those times where I did what Jesus did. He honored the Sabbath and he went away. I'm gonna speak to my contemporaries and my pastor friends. We are sinning when we don't Sabbath. What's going on family? I am so glad that you're here. You have tuned in to the best podcast that has ever been made in history. Come on somebody. It is the Pop Podcast. Absolutely, we're here. Progression over perfection.
The reason I say it's the best is because we don't know what it's gonna be yet. It is evolving every time. And this is our fifth episode because we wanted to do something that allowed people who have reached some level of success to see what it looks like to start again, to do something new, to do something that is not overproduced, to do something that's real and relevant but more than anything, it's authentic to the season that you're in. I am recording this as a 38, nine? How old am I? 38 year old. 38, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm recording this as... I'm 38, nine. I'm 39? You're gonna be 40 this year? Whoa, whoa, whoa. I'm recording this as... The whole studio had to help me. I'm recording this as a 39 year old, father of four, married to the same woman for the last 16 years, Natalie Todd, I love you. And my honest opinion is I am the worst I'll ever be today because I'm going to continue to become better.
Like, you saw that. You lost me for a second. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm the worst I'm ever gonna be for the rest of my life today because I'm committed to this idea of progression over perfection. And I'm joined here with somebody who is committed to that too, my brother Charles. How you feeling, bro? I'm good, man. I got my legs out of the podcast. I don't know what's happening. Yeah, this is good, bro. And we have officially made it past four episodes. Hey, that's a win. So it kind of feels like... We're podcasters. We are... This is not even a podcast. You understand what I'm saying? That might be a thing. If you like the podcast, let us know because we're just throwing things out there because the truth of the matter is I said it before, but if you're not a student in something all the time, you limit the level that God can take you to. And we felt like this was a time where we needed to interject our voices
into a space that's different than our preaching platforms, that's different than some of the other podcasts that we've been on. Something that values very highly being humble, open, and transparent. Everybody's trying to show you the best versions of them. And I think that one of the things that has helped me, helped us in our leadership, is the real authentic life that we're living behind what is done on the platform, behind the families you see, behind what is produced. And I just think it's part of my purpose to represent. And so when everybody's gonna show you the edited, we wanna show you the raw. Season two of this is gonna be, I mean, literally, it's gonna be crazy. Why are we saying that? Because this is about progression. Progression is the whole point. And so today I'm just excited about what we're gonna talk about because it is something that has guided my life, it's guided your life, and it's given us so much fruit. But before we get into it, okay, I need to know, bro, what you been listening to lately? Like, what's on the playlist? What is on the playlist?
We need to, I think we're gonna podcast long enough where we'll have a pop playlist. Ooh, that'd be good. You know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying? Progression of perfection, songs that'll help you. Yeah, okay, my producer mind just went off. What you been listening to lately? Man, this is good. I was, I made a playlist last year for my birthday that was like, this is my playlist for this year kind of thing. So I got my morning started. But it's very indicative of who I am, which is I grew up mixed black and white, which I always say, I grew up listening to Run-DMC and Willie Nelson. So that was like my, so right now the playlist is Bill Withers, Use Me. Da da da da da da da. Yeah. The video of that, the drummer is literally in the same pocket just locked in. So you can kill me. Yeah, I'm a drummer, so you already know. He's playing what it's called, it's like a Purdy Shuffle. Have you ever heard of that? No, I don't know, so let me know. Look up on YouTube, Purdy Shuffle. It's like this guy, Bernard Purdy, he's a drummer, and he does this thing. And he's going on the hi-hat, and that song is the most popular version of the Purdy Shuffle in a pop song.
And you can look up the dude, and if you ever watched this dude Purdy, he'd be like, It's the coldest thing, but anyway, I don't know why I just nerded out on the drumming music thing. I didn't tell that to my, there was a friend I sent the song to, and he immediately was like, So he was probably talking about what you were talking about, because he's a drummer. I had no idea. Okay, Purdy Shuffle. But yes, Purdy Shuffle, of course, one of my favorite things, literally. The Purdy Shuffle is literally something that's shaped my whole life. So that, and then, let's see, what else is on that playlist? I Just Wanna Celebrate? I just wanna celebrate. There was this BMX biking video that was a mixtape of all these dudes that I loved growing up, and it started off that documentary. And so when I hear that song, it just takes me back to a fun 10-year-old Charles riding his bike kind of vibe. You did BMX? Oh, yes, brother. I was number three in the nation. There's a horn that Percy didn't start off as a horn. Yeah, there you go. I did, yeah, yeah. So me and my dad, from when I was like seven years old to like 11, I raced BMX. We would travel. We lived in Louisville, Kentucky, but you would travel to go to different races. And when I was eight years old, I won the national championship and was number three in the world. Congrats. Can we give it up for number three in the world at eight years old? Wow. I mean, that is amazing. What do you get when you're number three? It's a tall trophy. That's a really tall trophy.
You still have it? I do, yeah. My mom still has it. And my name was in a magazine, you know, Charles Metcalf. Do you have like a picture? No, not a picture. You know what I'm saying? Eight years old, you don't get a picture. Really, once you hit like, it was 13, 14, 15-year-olds. Those were like when it started to get like, because they were like, literally, those guys were like signing deals with like Gatorade and like, it was a whole thing. What happened? Why aren't you like? The honest truth? Yes. It was just a sore subject. My little brother was born, man. Shout out to Chandler, my best friend in the world. But no, when I was eight years old, eight and a half, nine, he was born, and so we had a baby. So it's like loading because every weekend you would travel like five hours to this random city to do a race because if you win a race, you get points. And so it's like I have to have more points than the other guy. So anyways, it was just the travel of it. It made no sense like as a thing. So we shut it down. Yep. New baby, no more bike. No more bike. So anyways, but yeah, that is I don't know how we got there. Oh, my playlist. Your playlist. It reminded you.
But yeah, really. My playlist goes back and forth. It's like the next is on there is a passing me by. I don't even. She keeps on. And I used to. I can't rap this song. But anyways, that's my playlist. What about you? It's a very you have a very Neapolitan playlist, a very great way to say that. Yeah, I like that. I think the crazy thing is mine is like that as well. Yeah, I get stuck on songs, though. So like I will run a song into the ground. Really? Oh, yeah, because I create so much music. Like when I find something that's just speaking to me in the season, I'll play that. So top song on my playlist right now is Kid Again by John Bellion. Oh, I've been playing that thing over and over. And one day we'll talk about it. But I went and did a five day counseling intensive therapy thing. And I had, like, the spiritual moment of some things being healed in me from a little kid. And the Holy Spirit, like, brought that song to my memory as a gift. I almost feel like it was a gift because the music and the production of it is so crazy. Yeah, but the words of it, like one line says, I feel y'all back in control. I feel y'all, like as in Yahweh, back in my soul. Like it was like, it's like a spiritual. And then he cusses after. It's like really hard. But it just like, it takes me to a place right now that's like I can do anything.
The chorus says, like, I'm a kid again. I can do anything. Like, and that's how I feel right now. That's beautiful. Like, I just feel like the horizon of what God's about to do in my life is so huge. Like, I feel like I felt before anything happened for me. Yeah, that's really special. yo, do you know what's possible? That's how I feel. So, every day, Kid Again is coming on when I'm starting in the gym or something like that. And then, the next song, I mean, it's a one-two punch that is powerful. It's a song by The Sounds of Blackness called, now, I know that felt, hey, see, have you ever heard of The Sounds of Blackness? I don't know, I might, I don't know if I'm losing a card out here. No, you're not losing a card, but you were raised in a mixed house, so The Sounds of Blackness might not have come through. But Sounds of Blackness called Optimistic. And you've heard the song, it's like, ♪ As long as you keep your head to the sky ♪ Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I've heard that. But, like, people have sampled it a lot. But it, that mug, it's, it blesses me. And then, I had my sister, Mima, introduce me to a version where one of my favorite singers is singing it
and one of my favorite musicians is doing it. So, it's Brandy singing it, but, and Robert Glasper is playing it, like, and literally, now my kids, every morning on the way to school, can you play Optimistic? I feel like I'm culturing my kids, you know what I'm saying? This song came out in 1980-something. Like, and so, it's, those two songs have been blessing me. And then, randomly, I've been listening to Ages Past by Transformation Worship every day. Like, you've been faithful, Lord, through the ages past. That is why your name is forevermore. It's been blessing me. So, yeah, I'm just a little all over the place. How do you with music? Man, because I love music so much, I'm just limited. Meaning, I can't make music. It feels like- Hold on, wait, wait, wait. You are progressing. I am progressing. I have progressed. In your musical ability. I have progressed. From the time I met you, it was like a hmm. Like, yeah, you're like, like, I hear it like hmm, hmm, hmm. Like, to- That's so true.
No, he used to, he used to like, hmm. It's more- It's more- To now- Yeah, man. You've sent me whole songs with the assistance of Angelina Iulian. That's AI. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Allen Iverson is really helpful. But I'm saying, but like, words you've written, melodies you've done, and you've written on probably like, 10, 15 Transformation Worship songs. This is true. Actually started them, so. Okay. Let's, let's, what I, what I meant, yeah, let's reframe that. Yes. What I meant to say is, it would be extremely, like, listening to that old Bill Withers songs, and like, the bass line, and the, what's the Cupid Shuffle? What was the- Oh, the Purdy Shuffle. The Cupid Shuffle! Anyways, but listen to that, and then being able to have the ability to then just immediately go do that. It sounds like the most fun thing ever.
Completely. I mean, I can't imagine- And sometimes the most stressful. Okay, that makes sense. Because after you make a good song, the pressure to make another good song, and oh, will you make another one like this? Or, oh, that's not as good as this. So- Okay, that makes sense. You gotta get to a point where you're creating to just get out what's in you. Yeah, that's good. And it is super fun. And then that's where you can collaborate. Most of the greatest songwriters aren't the greatest musicians. That's true. Most of the greatest musicians can't write a song. Some, no, I'm not even playing. Like, some of these people are trash. No, no, no, no, no, I'm serious. But what they do is awesome. Well, it feels like there's times I've heard where they kind of like, the musicality outpaces the ability to, like, actually go with you. Yes! So it's like, the appreciation, I've heard us talk about that,
it's like, a musician is gonna appreciate that. And only three of them are gonna buy it. So you can't have a sustainable career because nobody's gonna really support you. I'm like, that's fire. Like, you know what I'm saying? Yes, 100%. And so sometimes, yeah, it's a beautiful thing. But I love that. And one day we are gonna have a pop playlist. 100%. And we will share that with you. Not yet, though. Not yet, not yet, not yet. We're working on it. We're working on it. Because this whole podcast is about what? Progression. That's it. And we wanna encourage people that are watching this right now to start. Start whatever God's telling you to do. Start the thing that you don't know if it's gonna last. Start the thing that feels like, oh, somebody's already doing this. I mean, how many podcasts are there? Seven, trillion? Trillion, I think is the number. Why are we starting it? Because there may be one person
that this conversation impacts and allows to start doing what God's called them to do. And maybe there's no people this helps, but we were obedient. Very good. A lot of people don't realize that doing what God called you to do is a win-win. Because when you do what God calls you to do, it's a win if it helps somebody, but it's a win because you obeyed. And a lot of people are looking for the second win and they just need to do the first one. Like most of the greatest things that I've ever done in my life is because I just obeyed God. And then it was like, oh yeah, millions of people bought it, or it touched this people. It wasn't, that was the goal. And I think sometimes we got to change the goal and make it God. And then God defines the goal afterwards. I don't know where that came from. Mad bars, super casual. But it is really the aspect of my life. Today on this podcast we wanted to kind of throw something different in. We've been talking about a lot of different things, but one of the pillars and bedrocks of my life and this ministry, and I think the success that we've had, is really not even a secret. It's actually one of the things that God gives us, and one of the things that he's asking us to embrace at a whole nother level, but it just seems like it's countercultural. And today we're talking about rest. And yeah,
how many people could use some rest? Like I need hands in the chat. I need people to understand. But the truth of the matter is most people just misinterpreted my question. I said, how many people could use rest? And a lot of people automatically thought about sleep. See, sleep and rest aren't the same thing. When you're resting, you can sleep, but some people are sleeping that still aren't resting. And one of the things that I found out is in this culture, we glorify the hustle. We glorify the grind, but we pay for it in our health, our joy, and our clarity. And maybe today there's a perspective that you could get by embracing, watch this, the revelation of rest. And all revelation means is revealed truth. There's something that's there that's hidden from you. And oh, there it is. Like I want somebody to know, oh yeah, we're supposed to rest. Everybody knows that we're supposed to rest. How many hours? Seven, eight. That's a good, like we know these things about sleep and taking breaks and receiving examples sometimes in our mentors, leaders in the Bible. But are you really practice? Is it a practice in your life? And one of the things that I've had to do, Charles has had to do is make it a practice to actually do what God invites us to do is rest. So in this episode, we're going to share some, I want to just say humble, open, and transparent stories about how we have and have not taken this seriously, what it's cost us. And maybe it'll give you some insight and maybe some inspiration to actually take the risk and embrace the revelation of rest. Charles, what does a rest look like in this culture right now when chronic exhaustion is what most people live in? A hundred percent. Like, I'm just exhausted all the time. Yeah. Well, I think we're living in a time where culture promotes and even glorifies like this badge of honor of I'm absolutely cooked. It's like, I am literally sizzling on fire. I have no energy. I didn't sleep last night. I got 18 businesses and I'm doing all these different things. And there's a part of that that is maybe just natural, like hard work. And this isn't about not hard work and not those things, but there is something being perpetuated that is against your human design. Like, if you think about it, our context, and if you're watching this and you're not a believer or follower of Jesus, one, we're so glad you're here. You're so welcome. I believe you can glean and learn anything from this, but we've chosen to follow Jesus as our leader and our savior. And a picture in the scriptures is I think about when God was creating us, I think about like, he could have created us not to need sleep. Like, I've never
thought about it. He could have just been like, yeah, y'all don't need to sleep. Why do you need to sleep? Like, but he made us where your body naturally gets tired. It naturally has this state where it like shuts down and it needs to reset. And there's a part of that that we have to come to grips with. Your body needs sleep. It needs rest. Why? So you can restart and refresh and reset. I think it's just important to not be fighting our hard wiring. Like, why are we trying to fight something that's like, this is kind of in the system. Like, you can't just use your phone all day and expect it not to need to charge. Like, why is that like a thing? There's a funny thing I just thought about my friend Micah. He was like, you ever thought how weird it is to, the way you go to sleep is by closing your eyes and tricking yourself that you're asleep? Like, if you think about it, it's like, all right, time to go to bed. You just close your eyes and be like, you're like trying to trick your body to think you're actually sleeping. But the truth is we need rest. And I think that's something that everybody has to reconcile against the culture, against the grind, is your body was made to need rest and it's good for you. It's not something you have to do. It's a beautiful thing you get to do. Well, I think you just exposed the first revelation of rest is that sleep is a part of rest, but not rest. Incomplete. See, because most people think if they get eight hours of sleep, nine hours of sleep, oh, I'm rested. Because that's the only time we're asked about the state of how we feel. But my question would raise to if your body feels restored, does your soul? feel rested. Very good. Because the truth of the matter is, you're not just your body. In that body is a mind, will, and emotions. And how many people have slept all day and woke up exhausted? Come on. Come on, let's be honest. There's some where you just crash out, you get up to use the bathroom and eat, and still, but your mind is racing. There's still anxiety that's happening. There's still, I got to do this and I got to do this and I got to do this. So I think the first revelation that we want to acknowledge is that sleep is always a part of being rested. But I think it's the first part, not the last part. And most people think, as long as I get eight hours of sleep, we'll be able to make it the next day. But in a chronic culture of exhaustion, where that is glorified, where, watch this, we have so many helpers to kill our health. Like, right now I'm going to come against, it's going to be a cuss word to some of y'all, but coffee is the only reason that some people can function. And it's not natural. It's something that I have energy drinks. It's drugs. I mean, come on, Adderall, some of y'all, I'm in your business.
Some of the reason, the only reason that you're showing up is because you're going against the creator's design. And you're literally having to put foreign things into your system to help you override the operating system he put on the inside of us. Now, this is big talk right now. But some of you are very productive based on the things that are driving you instead of the thing that you are driving. And those can be substances as well as those can be ideas. And I think before we talk about rest and restoration, I need to ask you, what's driving you? Why are you going so hard? What are you chasing? What number is enough? How many houses? How many posts or how many friends or how many, like, what is the thing? Because the truth of the matter is this idea, I'm going to take it out of our common language and put it into scriptural language. This idea of rest is culminated in the idea of a Sabbath. This is what God talks about and gives to the children of Israel in what we call the commandment. Now, think about this, Charles. I know we're starting in pretty heavy and some of y'all was like, did I click on the right one? Yes, you did. Because God's trying to get a message to you. There are 10 commandments that were given to Moses and nine of them, all of us think are like, oh my God, if people do that, they murder it. Like, no, bro, I don't hang out with no killers. Like, you know what I'm saying? Like, or he stole his wife. Like, there's no way. Like, if there's certain people, if their character leans into something that we can't even like, nah, bro, like God can forgive you, but please, you can't be around my wife. Do you understand what I'm saying? And everybody's good with all of these. The one that everybody forgets is that the Sabbath is a commandment given by God. So if we break those commandments, if breaking the commandments out of everything that God could tell us, there were 10 things that he said, I need you to do, and this would keep you in health. This would keep you safe. Why in the world do you think that it's an onslaught by culture and I'll even say the enemy to make you forget that God's gift to men was the Sabbath and for us to think that it's an interruption to our day, life. Yeah. That's so good. Charles, I can keep going. I need you to say something because I'm about to preach and I know this is a podcast or a pop cast, but I'm about to preach because I have had to embrace this revelation because it goes against my nature. My nature can get stuff done. My nature can produce more. My nature can use up every ounce of everything. And that's my nature. And God said, that's not the nature I created you for. That's the nature you adopted. That's a nature. And so I want to go back to the idea of what's driving you in seasons where rest was not important, in seasons where rest was not valued
at the highest level, or you didn't have the revelation of it yet. What was driving you? Man, the easiest thing I could say was trying to prove something to other people. Yikes. I was trying to prove whether I was good enough, that I deserved to be where I was, that I was more talented than what you saw, maybe you didn't see all of me. And I think all of that, that's the thing, we like to say it this way, that sin or missing the mark, when we're doing something out of God's plan, it's a illegitimate answer to a legitimate need. There you go. So it's a, you have a real desire, but the way you're trying to get at it is the problem. And I think, I mean, I can go all the way back to playing sports of just, there was this drive, which is necessary in life, but it wasn't out of, I really love this, and I wanna be proficient, and I wanna be well, it is, I have to be the best, and I have to be better, and I have to prove to my coaches, and I have to show that even though I made a mistake this time, I won't do it again. And so I remember from a young age, being very obsessive about, okay, the plays, and where am I gonna do? And I would visualize all my games, and okay, when this happens, and this happens, but it produced, I was, you know, as a kid,
you're physically tired, but it started this spinning early on of just thinking, how can I do it? And I gotta score, and I gotta, okay, what am I gonna, and that's where I think now, even into my adulthood, at times where I haven't been able to really rest, I've been to go to sleep, but I haven't rested, is it's like, you know, on your phone, if you go to my wife's phone right now, without a shadow of a doubt, and you hit the little swipe up, and you see all the apps, she has every app that she's ever had. Bro, you can just scroll through days on every app, she got random safaris where she was searching up what medicine to give the kids, but it's like that, it's like when we try to go to sleep, our brain has 86 windows of, what about the kids, and what about my career, and is God gonna answer that prayer, and did they see me? Is that friendship stable? How am I gonna make money? Oh gosh, I gotta, and I remember from an early age, there were all these windows, and the truth is, all of that funneled out of, for me, was just a lack of security, it was I didn't know who I was, I didn't know, I thought my love and value was based on my performance, it was based on if I had a good game, then I'm amazing, if I had a bad game, I'm bad, and I think for a lot of people, the truth is,
we get older, but those windows don't close. What I just heard you say is that for many of us, and it was for you, as well as me, is insecurity becomes the engine, and a lot of times, the thing that starts driving us is an insecurity. That's good. I can think of the same thing for me, and again, why are y'all sharing these stories? Because we are hoping to help somebody. See, you can progress past being driven by the things that are not supposed to be in the driver's seat. That's the truth. You know what I'm saying, and I remember it, I told it in my book, Damaged But Not Destroyed, I remember being 12, about 12 years old, and again, I played drums, and so I played since I was two, and I was pretty good, and I remember asking my parents to take me to choir rehearsal, the main choir rehearsal. Big church, you know what I'm saying? If you grew up in church as a kid, it was. I was preaching to youth last night, and I almost said, I'm the pastor from big church. Yeah, that's crazy. I was like, I'm really old, this is weird. So I was in big church, main service, and because I wanted to play. That was my dream at that time,
is to play on a Sunday morning at big church, and I was good enough to do it, but the minister of music probably knew something that I didn't know, or maybe had some other reason that he didn't feel inclined to tell a 12-year-old, but I would come, I would be early, I would learn all the music, I would play it, but they never let me play, and so before or after I'd jump on, and the drummer would let me play a little bit, and they'd be like, oh, that was cool, like, hey, little Michael, yay, yay, Hercules, Hercules. Hercules, wait, what? Oh, you don't know what that's from? Oh, God. All right, this is where his white side's taking over. That's from the Nutty Professor, where the mom, he's playing all, Sherman, Sherman, Hercules, we'll watch it after. But see, that's what you gotta do, we gotta, anyway, I'm gonna, no, actually, I'm gonna show all your kids that movie. Yeah, there you go, there you go. Make sure they get it. Make sure they got it. But long story short, they didn't let me play, and that developed, I remember sitting on the maroon chairs in the back of Higher Dimensions, and me deciding that being good was not good enough.
Like, it's not okay to be good. I guess I have to be great. I guess I have to give nobody room to be able to judge. It will be plain that I am the only choice, and that's when that, that engine of insecurity started up, and it was like, I only am valuable if I am great. And that started me on a 20-year journey. of succeeding at almost everything I did. See that's the trick about insecurity. You can be successful and wildly insecure and have the wrong engine. You can have the complete wrong motive, wrong desires, and it gets you places you wanted to be. What's another name for engine? It's a motor, which reminds me of the motive. It's the thing under the hood. It's the thing that's on the inside. It can be going fast and look good, but have the wrong motive. And then that takes me back to when David is getting picked. When Samuel comes and he looks at all of his brothers, what does he say? He says, God looks at, I mean, a man looks at the outward, but God looks at the motor, the heart, the motive. And my motive was off. My motor, I was trying to get something I legitimately needed. I needed affirmation. I needed to know I was good enough. I needed, but I was trying to get it from the wrong source. Not God, trying to get it from random people that I didn't know. Like I was trying to get it from my minister of music and the other drummer. Like I was trying to get it from the wrong place. And that started 20 years. And people won't tell you this. That wrong motive started 20 years of me winning. Wow. Yeah.
And what people don't understand is what it cost me, though. It cost me missing moments that I should have cherished. Wow. It cost me being able to actually enjoy when I got to somewhere. Because the truth of the matter is, when that engine is always going, you don't rest in what's happening. You don't take deep breaths in and be like, you literally get filled with anxiety. You start thinking what everybody else thinks. You're trying to do it again and do it better and do it bigger and all this other stuff. And I think one of the things that people don't realize is rest is supposed to be a rhythm. There you go. When I think about playing drums, they literally tell us that the drums are the heartbeat of any band because it keeps the rhythm, the time, the tempo. And anybody that plays in a band, the worst musician to not be good is the drummer. And brother, we've had some moments. Wait. Yes, sir. Who is playing the drums? Who is playing the drums? Well, because everybody's collective ability to be unified is based on the rhythm of that person. Can they keep time? And the thing about rhythm, now I'm sciencing. This drums has kind of been an undertone of this whole thing. But the thing about rhythm is rhythm is all about timing. So it's one, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. I can play a lot of beats in one, two, three, four. I can go.
Or I can go. That's all one, two, three, four. But you have to keep it synchronized for it to actually become a beat that people can move to. There you go. Many people's families can't move to the rhythm because it's irregular. Many people's businesses can't move to the rhythm of rest because it's not consistent. Come on, yeah. Many of your own nervous systems cannot even catch up with the ideas that you have because it's so sporadic. Come on, that's so good. And I just think about the times in my life where I literally said, well, I'm young, I'll rest. And that's a trick of the enemy. It is, 100%. Because it is not a part of God's design for us to rest when we get old. It's for us to rest from the time we have the revelation. And I think that's my heart in this is to save 18-year-old, 20-year-old, 45-year-old, 68-year-old. Like, it's not too late to get the revelation of resting because once you get it, it changes everything in your life. Yeah, that's so good. Well, it's one of those things I think what's so important of what you're saying is there are so many people who are meant to go with you. And I think of so many examples where you see people who were successful and driven and accomplished all these things. And at the end of their life, nobody was around. No. There's one.
We talk about it all the time. Don't use no names. I'm not, I'm not. Okay. There's one thing, but it's like at the end of this greatest moment, it's like you're talking about all the people who hurt you and did you wrong and none of your family is anywhere to be seen. And it's like, yes, you were the most successful at this thing. But like, it's what the scripture would say is what does it profit a man to gain the whole world but lose their soul? Can I submit this? Is that a lot of times losing your soul is not like selling your soul to the devil. It's literally forfeiting the gifts that God gives us for our soul to actually thrive. And one of the things that we give over to time, life, culture, the devil. our families is the ability to actually embrace resting. And that's why the Sabbath is not a once-a-year thing. It's supposed to actually be a once-a-week thing that God gives. The Bible literally says it's a gift to man. Now, I didn't hear any messages growing up about the Sabbath. There's nowhere to be found. What are we talking about? Like, growing up as a kid, nobody was like, don't lie, don't steal, don't have sex before you marry. Rest weekly? I mean, they're teaching me to give offerings, and I don't have a job. I'm taking money from my mom to give, and you're teaching me the concept of tithing. But nobody is teaching me the concept of resting. Well, you can't give what you don't got. That's the honest truth, and many of us, we didn't have it. You don't have it to give to anybody. And so, I think this idea of the Sabbath, I love it, because in the commandment it says, remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. That word holy is set apart. And the essence of how God created us, which goes against everything that we try to raise ourselves to be and mold ourselves to be, is we spend our whole lives thinking, I'm supposed to be independent. I don't need nobody. I don't need nothing. I don't
need anything. I'll do it by myself. And part of the Sabbath is dependence. It is when God, when he provides food for him in the desert, and he gets manna, and he says, when it's the Sabbath, gather two on the day before, because nothing's gonna happen on this other day. It is, you're gonna have to depend on me that on the sixth day, right before you're supposed to take off, I'm gonna give you enough. I'm gonna give you enough for two days. But some people, it's like, oh, well you gotta store it. Another rule he had with the manna was you can't try to store it up. So if you stored it past the day, it would mold, your house be stinking, be all rotty. And that's the thing about rest, is rest is really a sign of dependence, which fights the internal motor or motive for all of us to think we can do it by ourself, which is another way of saying, I can be my own God. Or it's another way of saying, I'm better than God. Like, I can do it better than God. And for many years, let me be honest, I thought I could do it better than God. Wow. Yeah. Come on. Just by the simple act of defying the principle of taking a day off. Yeah. Now think about that. Right now, if your boss came to you, for everybody with a job and said, take the day off, you would start shouting. Yeah. Like, like, like take the day off. Yeah. But the truth of the matter is, after you left that job, you would fill it with something else that wasn't restful. Yeah. See, a lot of people think taking a day off is just not doing the job that they currently are at. Yeah. But taking a day off is actually resting. Right now, me and you are resting in these chairs. I'm not holding myself up. Yeah, that's good. If I had to do a squat for this entire podcast, do you understand? Like, if I had to be in this position, holding myself up with my own strength, there's no way that I could do it. I would fall. Yeah. But I'm resting in this chair. That's good. Yeah. What does it look like to actually rest? That the bills are going to be fine. Rest. That who's supposed to be in my life next year will be in my life. Rest. That the church is going to be okay. Rest. That laundry is going to get washed tomorrow. Or, like, whatever it is, because people have different things. I'm just saying, like, and most people can't take a day off. Watch this, because they don't actually
trust God. I'm going to just say it straight up. Most pastors won't leave their pulpit, because they do not trust that God will provide for their church. Most parents will not say, kids, we're not doing anything today, because they think their relationship will be ruined with their kids. Like, I mean, put the context to wherever it fits to you, but most people will not take a day off because they do not believe Romans 828. That's good. All things, even this day off that God commanded me to take, is working together for my good. And that's where I think that I've been kind of, this has been a, I don't know, I've been very vocal about this. Yes. Well, it's so, I have to say this, too, because knowing you as a friend of, like, how hardworking you are, how driven you are, it's also, I would say, like, among our friends and even pastors, you're like the rest guy. Like, if we ever go to a pastor's thing or a conference, it won't be eight minutes at a table before you are like, all right, have you taken time, when's the last time you took off, are you taking a, like, and I just think it's a beautiful thing, but how, if somebody's watching this, they're like, okay, I'm realizing, okay, I'm sleeping, but I'm not rested. Like, how have you had to learn what's restful for you? Because I think it's different, like, we both rest in different ways and everything. everybody does. But how have you gone from that little kid who's behind the drums, I gotta be great, I gotta drive, to now, I mean this is like a part of your life, your weekly calendar, your yearly calendar, you take time off, like talk about that progression to that moment. Okay, since this is the progression over perfection podcast, it did not just end up like that. Yeah. The first thing that I had to do was decide I was gonna be obedient to God's Word. And most people have not made the decision. Yeah. If you decide I'm gonna be obedient, whatever happens, yeah, cool. Yeah. I think this is one of the marks of why gods have been able to bless me with so much, is because I actually honor the Sabbath. And I'll tell you practically how I do that in my life, but let me back up just a little bit and tell you that either you will honor the Sabbath because you're made to, or you choose to. That's very good. And a lot of people haven't chosen to honor the
Sabbath because their life hasn't broken yet. So mine was a mixture. I had the great gift of learning about the Sabbath and rest through Pastor Tim Ross, and him asking me on my first year of becoming a pastor, February 1st 2015, he was like pick a month this summer, and you need to not preach, you need to not go speak nowhere, you need to rest and give that to yourself, your wife, your daughter at the time, which was Bella, and to God. Which is the worst first-year pastor advice, quote-unquote, to culture and even church culture. Even pastors planting... No, you can't afford to take off. Wait, whoa. I think in the first couple of chapters in the Bible. But again, this tells you how far we've gotten away from this culture, and I was freaked out. Oh my gosh. Because I was like, what's gonna happen? The church is gonna go up in flames. Like, I had two people there anyway. Like, nobody... Fire wouldn't even be that big. Fire wouldn't even be that big. Like, it was not a big deal. But I mean, in my world it was huge. Absolutely. But I decided to obey. Yeah. And that July, I took all of July off, and I didn't rest. Yeah, yeah. You were doing what you're supposed to do. Yeah, I watched. Because something that you become devoted to first starts off as a discipline. And most people won't become, make a decision for the discipline. It will turn into devotion. Yeah. But it has to start off as a decision that's like discipline. So that whole thing, I was like trying not to watch the service, and Tammy texting, like, what was the offering? Like, is everybody doing okay? Did they speak okay? Like, and I'm doing all this other stuff. And I came back. Like, I was there the whole time. Yeah, yeah. So in function, I did it. But in faith, it was far from me. Wow, yeah. So I did the function, but I didn't have the faith to believe God was handling it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was like, okay, cool. I'm back. We made it. Like, what? And as my, as the weight of my calling got heavier, I had already made a decision that I'm going to obey the practice. I'm going to do it. I decided. Yeah. But then I started to embrace the principle. See, a lot of people obey practices without embracing the principle. Come on. When you embrace the principles, like, what was God's original intent with me taking a break? So I went to study, like, what is the Sabbath? Like, what is supposed to happen?
And I think about it like this, like, let's just go back to the story of creation. First day, second day, third day, fourth day, fifth day, he creates everything that we're experiencing from the sea and the sky. And he separates and creates vegetation and creates all the animals and all this stuff. On the sixth day, he breaks the mold. Everything else he spoke. But when he created man, Pastor Charles, what did he do? He put his hands on. Uh huh. And then he breathed the life into it. Okay. What did he do on the seventh day? He rested. Now, whoa, hold on. Wait a minute. Come on. Like if I was about to show off my glory, why in the world when I create man on day one or at least day two, okay, there's light so you can see like, let there be light bow. And then on day two, let me show my kids, let me show them how I get down. Yeah. Let me show them how to work. Yeah. God's playbook for us was after putting his hands on us, putting his breath in us was to give us a full day of rest. Think about it. That's beautiful. That the first experience we have with God is not him creating the sky or bringing forth the sun or vegetation growing up. It was like, Hey, chill out. Wow. Take it all in. Yeah. You weren't here yesterday, huh? This is nice, huh? Yeah. in my big one with this. You need me to do anything? No. Wow. Just sit here with me. Yeah. Let's spend time together. Do I need to say something? Just be. Wow. That's beautiful. So it gives me the revelation that we were created to work from rest, not for it. Yep.
Culture has now flipped it that you need to work, work, work, work, work so that you can rest. Instead of rest, so that you can work. That's beautiful, yeah. And most of us, when I got that revelation, Charles, it was like, oh, shoot. Come on, yeah. I have to protect. There you go. My rest. I have to protect my Sabbath. I have to make this a practice that I embrace. I gotta tell the people around me, hey, my nature is going to wanna do this. Yeah. Like you can ask my team, my assistant, you can ask, like, I'm gonna wanna not honor this because that's in my nature to get more done. Yeah. I need you to make sure there's nothing happening here so that I can embrace this principle. I've had to set my life up to actually watch this honor God, which in turn, when I honor God, I honored myself. There you go. Because God's on the inside of me. And I can't tell you every great thing that I've ever done, the things that have impacted the world have happened after I come back from sabbatical.
100%. Relationship Goals, the book, was started as a sermon series. That actually was a sermon series first Sunday off of me taking a sabbatical. And that honestly was the first sermon we ever partnered with together. Yep. Oh, that was at Dallas after you finished, maybe that was before I finished crying. I don't know. It was at the coffee shop. It was after, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was your last week of sabbatical you were preaching that next Sunday when we met that whole trip. And we went to a coffee shop in Dallas. We took the risk of relationship and went on a trip together and went to this pastor's gathering. And that was the first time, that's crazy. That was the first time I ever even was open to having somebody help me with a sermon. That's so crazy. You say that and it's crazy to me because of how you are. Like, you literally do everything to get, like, that's just our thing. But think about it. It was a gift off of sabbatical.
Dang, yeah. The gift off of sabbatical was you can either take this old model of preparing all your messages by yourself and getting in the closet and getting a word from God. And nobody can see it, even the person putting it up on the screen. It needs to be fresh, hot and fresh. Like, it's like, hold on, wait. God gives revelations to other people that I can be, I'm preaching Paul. I'm preaching, I'm preaching. It's the Bible. It's God's revelation. But a different perspective helps me. And that was the first time I sermon prepped with anybody. Me and you sermon prepped. I preached the message that Sunday before the person. And that message went on to get millions and millions of views and really started the public, like the impact public ministry of Transformation Church. But think about this. That was after I had taken six weeks to say, God, this is yours. Every time I walk away from the church, it lets me know how much God is in control and I'm replaceable. And that's one of the things that you have to understand
about honoring the Sabbath. It humbles you. Cause people keep living and people keep doing their thing. And I'm saying this to a generation who is riddled with anxiety right now. Like I'm literally watching people be unhappy with what they prayed for because they cannot get out of drive. Yeah, a hundred percent. New apartment, can't rest in it. The family you ask God to bring to you, when we having another one, like it's like this constant. And I heard somebody say what the enemy can't get in front of and stop, he gets behind and pushes. And would that not look like our culture today? Oh my gosh. And so I think for me, you said you're the rest guy or the Sabbath guy. Like I'm gonna speak to my contemporaries and my pastor friends. We are sinning when we don't Sabbath. Pause, Selah, you know what that means. Pause and think. The truth of the matter is six days without, with God's blessing is better than seven without it. It's the same principle as tithing. It's the same principle as trusting God.
It's the same. And most people will never ever be able to give it to their congregation because they haven't given it to themselves. The truth of the matter is Charles learned how to rest because I rest. Bree knows how to rest because I rest. This team, the staff there. And some of them. It's taking time because they're having to literally be washed into a new way of believing God, and it's one of the Ten Commandments. I mean, it's so crazy that it's not like I'm telling people to do this secret, like, it's like, don't lie. I got that one. Don't kill. Got that one. Don't sleep with somebody else's wife or husband. Got that one. Take a day off every week. What? What you mean? Yeah. Well, it's so, I think, there are two things I think of. One, the first thing is, is Jesus. He's talking and he says, come to me, all who are weary, carry heavy burden, and I will give you rest for your soul. And he's talking to a culture that is honoring the Sabbath, but not rested. Y'all. So he's talking to all Jewish people that like, no, okay, we have to do this thing because Moses said we got to do it. And my grandparent did it, my mom did it. We got to do Shabbat. We got to light the candle. We got to do the meal. But he's saying, you're still not ready. You need to come to me. If you're, I will give you rest for your soul. And there are so many people that we think we're going to get what our soul needs is in more. Yes. And what your soul needs is in less. It's in slowing down. And as you were talking, I think, yo, Arlo, our oldest, he just turned seven and we were talking to him and it's just so crazy. I mean, you know, the older your kids get. And I was looking at old pictures and I had this moment of like, oh gosh, I need to be writing more down. Like I want to, I want to remember this. And the way you can enjoy your life is if you're rested, you remember everything you need to. When you're not rested, you can't, you can't remember. You don't know. You don't want. And so for me, it's even something, a part of it is like, man, I want my kids to grow up with a mom and dad who were rested, who had enough time. Right now, the kids, we, last night or two nights ago, they were playing soccer in the backyard and I was like, everybody, wait, watch this. And I ran
in our garage and got spray paint and I spray painted the whole yard into a soccer field. And Abby's like, what are you doing? I'm like, it'll grow out. It'll be fine. But now it's like every night. And last night I got home and I was trying to do something and I was like, oh, I got to do this thing. And I kind of like got worked up and I was like, wait a second. Like this is, I want to, I want to rest in this. I want to remember this moment. And I just think it's so easy to get caught up with the things we think we're doing for the people that need us to rest the most. Like I'm working hard because I'm trying to get you this thing or I'm doing this, babe, because I'm trying to help us or I'm trying to, and it's like, you missed the whole point. Like you're not, you do all the work for the people, but the people just want you. They just want you. And I feel that so strongly that even some family, some parents, some dads, some leaders, like the people just need you. It's not all the stuff you're providing for them. It's the presence and that cannot happen if you're not rested. And let me say, it's not that the point of why God gave us the Sabbath so that he could be with us. There you go. It goes back to walking with him in the cool of the day, Adam, Eve, their first practice together was Sabbathing, just being together in each other's presence. So good. No huge agenda. Yeah. No, like, what does that look like? And you're saying, well, what does that look like for me and God? Like, how do I practically do that? Like you make space. Yeah. Like anything that concerns my work on my Sabbath, I do not do. So how it looks like for me practically is... Yeah, talk about that because you've done some dramatic things too. And I think it's important because it's that serious. That's what we're trying to say. Like, it is that serious for you to change your life, change your setup to honor God's work. So a lot of people, let me say this first thing, a lot of people do not work enough to take as many Sabbaths as they do. Let me just, especially in our generation, I'm on a Sabbath. I need a Sabbath. You Sabbath eight days a week. How does that work? I need a mental break. I need a professional break. You take so many breaks that nothing can actually get done. And so I want everybody to see the balance of it is that it should be six working days, one day of Sabbath. He gives us the template. Even the cultural work week is like five days and then six days or however people do it. The biblical model of work. So it doesn't mean you have to watch this working job or not synonymous. There you go. A lot of people think their work is their job. Yeah. My job is one thing. And I got five of them. Yeah. My work. Yeah. Like last night, my, my boy will tell you right now you text me, read the text. You were
texting me about the sermon. Just, you don't have to read the whole text. No, you can read it. But he texts me talking about sermon for the weekend and other things. Read it. Okay. I said, easy, Brody. How you feeling for Sunday? Any ideas? Let me know. I'm in the back of my attics, sweating like a slave. Tomorrow, I will be refreshed and will be ready to rock. I had to tell him, I was at work. Brother, I was cooking. Like, he was talking to me about my spiritual job. Yes, yeah. And I was at work for my wife. Yeah. And I was in that attic till three o'clock in the morning. The only reason I'm here today is by the grace of God. But again, I say that to say that many people don't realize that work doesn't mean job. Yeah, yeah. You will have a job. You also will have work that has nothing to do with that. And God's asking all of us to have a day where we put the work aside for him. Very good. And most people follow the function of the Sabbath, but what they do is just switch work. There you go, yeah. So like, I'm not at my job, but this is when I'm doing my side hustle and I'm like literally doing, but if you actually study, it's like making space and time for God,
for yourself and for those you love. Yeah. And what this looks like for me practically, and it's been iterations, but I'll tell you this, and we'll have to do more on this because I think that this is giving people an appetite to see what it looks like to live a life that God designed. There you go. I have for a decade lived a life that's so fruitful because I did it the way he designed it. There you go. And a lot of people like the idea, but they don't understand the practical practice of this. So Sunday after church, I get with my team, find out what's happening for the week, talk to my social media, creative director. We do all that stuff. We make a final post. I'm off of Instagram, turn it off, eight o'clock. Eight o'clock, I'm done. My brain is down. I ain't talking about sermons and I do it. I used to do it on Fridays. I used to try to do it on different days, but the sermon and the weight of what I'm called to do on the weekend, it was interrupting it so hard because I was trying to be responsible and prepare. And I think this is a good place to say, like, this is not about a rule. Like this is about a relationship and a practice
that God is giving us to be revived. There you go. And so changing the day of the Sabbath, people who follow in Jewish, usually it's Saturday. So there's different things, but I'm just saying, take a day out of the seven and rest from work. And literally what that looks like for me is eight o'clock on that night, I stop all stuff. Me and Nat usually either watch a movie, do something. That next morning, I take it slow. I have gotten somebody to help with the kids on that day. And when I say that my wife and everybody, they wake them up and they do it like this daddy's one day to rest, to sleep in. I take it slow. I work out. Working out for me is refreshing. And there was a time in my life that would have been work. That would have not been a Sabbath. That would have been torture. But as again, I change it's like, where do I feel good? Where do I feel rested? Like, I feel rested when I'm in there and I don't have to rush and go just an hour. And I'm working out with my wife and I'm sitting there with friends and I do that. And then after that, I'll literally just sometimes drive. Yeah. Like, no, I'm serious. I'd tell Mo or Scott, I'm gonna be like,
watch me on my phone. I'm just gonna go driving. And literally I'll play music. I'll play that optimistic song, put down my windows, go park on random. What people don't understand is like, I go and park on random pieces of land and just pray. I end up owning them. No, I'm not, Mo'll tell you. I just, I wanna be open to just like not have, my life is so scheduled. My life is so planned. My life is so productive and I just need space for God. And there've been times where he just speaks to me. There's been other times where I just get encouraged. There'll be times that I'm just sitting there and then by three o'clock, I have a standing appointment for a massage with a sports person that blesses my whole life as much as I work out. And I do that for 60 minutes. And then usually I go drive again. No, I'm dead. Like, I'm just trying to make space for God in myself. And this is the thing, this might go over your head. Sometimes making space for yourself makes space for God. I didn't understand that. A lot of times our prayer time is so like, I gotta get a word or this is my quiet time. And it's like, hey, that's too intense relationally.
Like if every time me and Nat wanted to connect and be like in love and intimate or have a deep moment, it's like, hey, this is our time. This is our time to connect with me right now. It's like, yo, chill, like chill. Like the best dates are the ones that just flow. The best times are the ones like, hey, we're just. Chillin and you want to go to that movie or you want to like yeah That's great. And if you would think about spending that time with God revelation Restoration freedom. Yeah, right. I mean I've taken naps and felt God's presence more Yeah, then I have in church services. Yeah, because it's like I'm with him. Yeah 100% and and then I'll come home and Do something with my kids we might go ride bikes Cuz it just fills me up to see them growing up and I have tea time with Bella and she tell me what's going on in the sixth grade and like it's just like yeah, and I'm not rushed and in More than anything on that day. I'm reminded that I am NOT what I do We are called human beings not human doings And so much of my life is predicated on what I do What I do for God what I do for my family what I do for others how I bless others how I help others and Many times that makes me negate the the person that I am Yeah, and on my Sabbath, I just get to be and this is the thing that I've learned if you don't choose to rest Your body will choose it for you. There you go There are scriptural precedents that lets us know that the Sabbath is such a big deal for God that he lets an entire people group Be taken into captivity because he told them to let the land rest and because they were disobedient to let the land have a Sabbath He said y'all don't deserve this land anymore. I'm gonna let you be taken into captivity So the land can rest Yeah Yeah, I'm just gonna I'm gonna set it right here. Yeah that the Sabbath may be more important to God Then you think yeah 100% for me. It's a non-negotiable. Yeah, and then how that practically works out for our church is that Um, I preach a message usually every week. I mean every week every year. Yeah on why rest is important
I think it's one of the pillars. I think it's one of the The figures that God gives us to honor him in our faith. Um, and Then I go away. Yep I'm like you talk about it. And then I'm gonna show you how to do it. I'm gonna display this for you. Yeah, and I've done everything from four weeks to eight weeks. I think I've done more than that before like Yeah, I've been when you had the kids you when I had the kids I would do a little more It's been the most it's the only reason Charles that I blasted this rocket ship Yeah, I mean, I don't know if anybody has ever gone high in In a plane before but what God's done in my life in the last eight years has been something that would kill most people and not just from a standpoint and if we're being humble open and transparent, I mean like It would kill them in so many different ways. Yeah, nobody talks about Yeah, nobody talks about the trauma of success. Yeah um The reason I'm still actually joyful. Mm-hmm Not cynical believe in people Laugh for real. Yeah, have fun Still think my wife is the baddest woman on the planet is Because of those times where I did what Jesus did after huge miracles huge impact the Bible says he withdrew often. Yeah He honored the Sabbath and he went away Yeah, I'm just telling everybody whether you're a mom that is raising a child or 15 children a CEO that has a Fortune 500 company or you're a startup whether you are a college student or you are Somebody right now that is getting your dream off the ground on your mama's couch Trying to get it out the mud the Honoring God way of living life is to honor the Sabbath To rest weekly to get with him to make space for him, and I'm telling you That rest will produce restoration the greatest times of my healing have been revelations
whispers and Challenges to come higher when I was resting It's hard to hear God in a still small voice When everything is zooming. Mm-hmm. So good That's why he says he leads you by still water. Why still water? because the Bible tells us that I Want you to think about this Still water was the only place back in the day to see your reflection There was no mirrors There was no Wayfair. There was no Amazon. There was no mirror in your house The only way that you could see your reflection is you would go to still water Because it would be the clearest version of you in something else Everybody else saw you, but you didn't see you You had to be still and the water had to be still May I submit to you that you haven't seen you in a while until you're still When you get steel, maybe you're able to see the pride when you get steel You may be able to see oh man my motives have changed a little bit I started out doing it for this reason, but I think I'm doing it for this reason now When you get steel, maybe the Holy Spirit will say hey You need to forgive them or you need to go back and talk to to them about this because he wants to restore you He's the one that will restore Your soul, so I'm encouraging everybody. Yeah as we are on the progression not perfection podcast Like uh, I want you to try it. Yeah, that's a big thing. That's the that's the thing One of my favorite quotes it says The best time to if you're looking for shade the best time to plant a tree would have been 20 years ago But the second best time is today today and that's the big thing You can try today and it'll I think giving yourself time for it to grow and evolve to learn yourself It's actually restful. But yeah starting today and start I think of so many people even to like my wife and we carry a lot
Of responsibility for people you love and care and take care of little kids It's still even having the courage to step away from that and trusting they're gonna be okay Yeah, but starting today with just a little thing for me my whole thing It started with now something that I do daily But it's very restful for me to two things one the function of I have a little coffee maker and it's kind of like monotonous But it kind of like chills me out a little bit It's a making a cup of coffee and then the drive thing was another thing for me Like that was a key part of like on this day. That's what I do I wake up I make a cup of coffee and I go on a drive and it was just that little thing that thing grew Into other things, but I think anybody you can start today and you'll see fruit Charles I gotta say one more thing cuz I hear the skeptic like talking to me right now And it's like well, what if you know something I'm just trying to Sabbath didn't like an emergency happens the Bible addresses this Part of the reason why people hated Jesus is because he did things on the Sabbath that they said weren't supposed to be done But what he was saying is like this is not an all-the-time thing. This is an exception to the rule This is not the rule. He's like so like somebody is their ox fell into the ditch Go pick go get your ox because you ain't gonna be able to work the rest of these weeks these days if you so I'm not saying that if something happens or emergency because some people don't do things for the chance that They might work and it may not you know, no. Yeah again. This is not a rule This is not something that God's trying to lower it over you the Bible says the Sabbath was made for man Not the man for Sabbath. It's a gift to us. Yeah, it's from creation all the way back to our Creator He wants us to understand it. So I just want you again. I want to say try because if something happens Yeah, all right handle biz, but if it happens every time you have a Sabbath. Yeah, it might not be a A principle or a misnomer that's happening. It might be a practice that you're putting into place So I'm just encouraging you and we're gonna have to do more on this Yeah, because this is like a new concept that's like hatching in people. Yes, but husbands and wives You're gonna have to help each other do this like you're gonna have to be a team But I'm telling you gonna get a better husband. You're gonna get a better wife like teams You're gonna have to do pastors do this. Yeah, and I'm telling you the blessing of God He will restore your soul and living whole is better than living empty. That's the truth, man. It's the truth. Hey
