Amen, come on, thank you Jesus. Anybody thankful for Jesus in this place this morning? Come on. We're thankful for freedom found only in Him. Hey, you can stay standing. I got just a couple things I need you to know about them. We're gonna continue to worship this morning. But hey, real quick, if you're new to church, if you're new to Flatirons, first off, welcome. Maybe you're like, I don't know what I wanna do next, but I know I need to be surrounded by good Christian communities. Maybe you're just like, how does a church have a college? What does that even look like or mean? Summer camp signups are now open, all right? Come on, we love summer camp around here. So for all my parents of middle school and high school students, listen, I'm biased, but I'm telling you, this will be the highlight of your summer for middle school and high school students. There's just something special that happens at a week of camp when you're able to get away from the noise, get away from the distractions, and just be in the mountains, in community with Jesus. It's such a special, special week. I'm gonna speak on behalf of Jim here real quick. Jim came up to our camp. He spoke to our students on the last night, and we were talking after the session, and he just looked at our team and said, hey, listen, I'm gonna be honest. That right there was a top five moment in Flatirons Church history for me. Like, that's the impact of a week of camp. We want your student to experience that. There's just something that happens. There's so much life change that takes place in the room. That's my story. I would not be doing what I'm doing if it wasn't for a week of summer camp. God got represented to me in a way that I was just like, what do you mean God's not mad at me? What do you mean God doesn't hate me? That happened at a week of summer camp.

And so we want your middle school, high school student to have that experience, plus it's a ton of fun. We're gonna have a ton of fun at summer camp. So you can get signed up. You can scan that QR code, find all the information. Our team is also gonna be hanging in the lobby. We would love to answer questions, talk scholarships. We do not want money. Listen, we do not want money to ever be a reason a student doesn't go to summer camp. So have that conversation with us. We'll do whatever we can to get them at camp. that every time I like, I can't help but raise my hand. I can't help but sing it as loud as I can. And so church, we're going to do that together this morning. We're gonna worship the God who meets us, right, in the middle of our brokenness, the middle of our shame. And he meets us with grace, he meets us with forgiveness, he meets us with love. And when we join our voices with them, it's eternity.

Chase, let's just keep on going, all right? Is that all right? Can we just take this one more time? Let's go, come on. Come on, one voice, here we go. Let's declare who He is. So God, we just come into this place right now and we're just calling on the name that is the highest name. There's no other name that compares to the name of Jesus. And so in the name of Jesus, we just ask for more of your presence. In the name of Jesus, I come against any stronghold of anger, of bitterness, of unforgiveness, of depression, of anxiety. Just God, in the name of Jesus, I just say, you have no place here. In the name of Jesus, I ask that your spirit would be in this room and heal those parts of our lives that desperately, desperately need you. And there's no other name that can do it. There's none like you. So we are in this place because the name that the angels are just saying over and over, he is holy, Jesus is holy. So Jesus, we want more of you. We want more of you in our life. So that's why we're here. So Holy Spirit, whatever you wanna do, have your way. We're your people and we're listening. We love you. In Jesus' name I pray, amen, amen.

All right, let's go, come on. Hey, welcome to Flatirons. Welcome to Flatirons. Before you have a seat, turn to somebody and tell them God is good. Go ahead and do that and then have a seat, all right? Yeah. It's good. I already lost my voice. I'm gonna keep on going anyway though. Hey, give it up, all of our campuses now, give it up for this worship band. This is crazy, right? And here at Lafayette, that mustache is just killer. I mean, right, come on. I can't grow a mustache. I tried. Hey, before we do, we're gonna be in John chapter six. So if you have that study guide with you or your Bible or an app and there's Bibles in the back of all of our auditoriums, you can go grab one of those. I wanna bring you up to date on some stuff. So we're in this Be Free thing. It started in November and I'll talk about it later today, but I'll just kind of bring you up to speed on it. Over the last couple months, we have solidified, in just a couple months, we're gonna open a new Loveland campus right up the road. So that's on its way.

It's being remodeled right now. This fall, we're gonna launch our institute where all of us can start taking night classes so we can grow in our faith, grow in our leadership, grow in whatever it is that you might wanna consider, like in ministry, you can do that. Rescue to Restore, I'm so excited about this. This past week, we met with law enforcement. and district attorney's offices and police all up and down all over Colorado, and there's some non-profits. And we are forming a task force right now because we, on our watch, we are going to shut down and eliminate human trafficking in the front ranks. Can I get an amen? So, that's so good. And then, how many of you ladies were at SHEA's this past weekend? Woo! I didn't come, I didn't come. There's just too much estrogen. It's like, no, all right, all right. But you all launched a new ministry called Scarlet Hope, which is reaching out to women who are trapped in the industry and strip clubs, things like that, but that's all they know. And so, we're gonna minister to those women because Jesus loves them, amen? All right, anyway, so, hey, I'm really excited about that. Hey, we're gonna be in John chapter six, and I'll be honest with you.

I could do an entire series on John chapter six. It has 71 verses in it, all right? So, there's so much packed into that, but here's what I wanna do today. I wanna look at one of the most familiar stories in the life of Jesus. Like, I learned about this story when I, kindergarten, Sunday school, I learned those songs about it and stuff like that. But this time, what I wanna do is, I'm gonna try to go into an old story. Everybody's gonna go like, I know all about the story, but I wanna pull out a new truth. Now, it's not new. It's been there for thousands of years, but maybe it's new for me, all right? It's like, I've read this stuff before, and I never caught that before, or I never thought of it that way. So, I'm gonna warn you right now, up front, when a new truth jumps off the pages of the Bible, which, this is why we talk about this Bible, is it's not just a book, it's alive. Like, it's breathing. It's like, it's like going with us, all right? It's like, it has, it's like a two-edged sword. It has the ability, it's like Jesse said last week, it's like to cut through all the BS that we hide behind, and all the victim, and all the, it's not my fault, and get right to the issue.

This is what's going on. This is what God's Word does. And then, we're gonna walk out of here in a few minutes going, what am I gonna do with this? Is this just more religious stuff I put on the pile of religious stuff I'm not doing anything with already, all right? Now, let's be honest. Most of us say that we're, like, we're Christians. We're waiting on God to do something in our life. I just want God to do something in my life. I want God to get involved in my problem. But here's what we're gonna kind of learn today. What if God wants to tell you this? Your problem isn't the first problem to be solved, you are. I'm gonna hurt your feelings a lot today, so I have a hat on, my mom would be so sad. So, right, now, if you're paying attention, some of you are going like, so, new truth, and it's gonna hit us really hard, and you're thinking, it's about to get real. Maybe we should have skipped this week, all right? But you didn't skip this week, so here you are, right? So, do me a favor. I want you to turn to your neighbor and say, buckle up. God, it's about to get real, say it. Okay, listen, I've been hanging out in some black gospel churches, and we've got to get alive here, folks, okay? I need you to talk back to me, all right?

Because I didn't get out of bed and drive all the way from Fort Lupton to just stare at you, all right? So, come on, let's go, all right? So, Jesus is about to drop some tooth bombs on us, and it's about to get really, really real. And what I mean is this, Jesus is gonna call us out. Literally, a truth that is true about your life, a reality that is present in your life. And anytime Jesus calls us out, he's not calling us out to judge us, make us feel guilty or ashamed, right? He's calling stuff out in our life because it's the real problem that's standing in the way of you experiencing and others in your life experiencing joy and peace and love, because there's a roadblock, and that's what we're gonna look at today, okay? Now, we've hit this several times in the past months. The word of God, the teachings of Jesus are like a mirror that you look into to see what's going on, all right? And sometimes you look in and go, okay, I'm doing all right. Sometimes you look in that mirror and go, something needs to change. See, I don't think, I don't know why you came to church, but I don't think anybody rearranged their weekend and fought traffic in that long line in kids' ministry and then found a seat in a crowded room so that you could come in here

and have me pat you on the head and go, you're great. You're perfect just the way you are. You're nailing it in every area of your life and pat you on your head and go, go out, don't change a thing, keep on going. That's not why you came here. You didn't come here to get beat up, but here's why I hope you're here today and every day. John chapter six, go to the very, very bottom of this. This is where we're gonna land today and then we're gonna take communion together at the end and some more worship, all right? So this is Peter answering Jesus when Jesus asked his disciples, are you gonna leave me like everybody else has left me? And this is what Peter says back to Jesus. He says, Lord, to whom shall we go? Like, where else are we gonna go? You have the words of eternal life, Jesus, and we have believed and have come to know over the last couple of years we've been hanging out with you, Jesus. This is where we've concluded that you are the Holy One of God. See, that's why we're here today. We actually believe that when Jesus speaks, his words have the power to bring eternal, everlasting, life-giving, healing, resurrecting power into every area of our life. He can speak into every problem of our life.

Peter answers Jesus' question with a question. Are you gonna leave me? Where else would we go to find what only you can provide? Who else are we gonna trust? See, we believe and we have come to know that you, Jesus, you are the Holy One of God. So here's what I want our posture to be today. So speak into our lives. and bring them to life. You wanna do that? All right, then buckle up, because it's rough, all right? So let's go, John chapter six. Let me kind of set this up. So big crowds are following Jesus, because word's getting around that he can heal people. And you know what? If Jesus was coming to town, and I heard that the last town he was in, like he was making lame people walk and blind people see, I'm like, I'm front row, man. He's gonna stick a head back on or something like that? I'm buying a ticket to that Jesus show, right? I do that, right? So big crowds are following, not because they wanna hear what he says. I just wanna watch him do Jesus tricks, all right? So look at this, verse five. I have had a lot of caffeine today, can you tell?

Bah, here we go, all right? So lifting, and I don't have boots on, because my doctor said that my boots are hurting my back. But in my heart, I have boots on. Okay, here we go. So I just saw that on the screen. I'm like, okay, all right. So lifting, ah, here we go. All right, so lifting up his eyes, then, this is Jesus, and seeing that a large crowd was coming towards him, Jesus said to Philip, he's one of the disciples, where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat? Now look at this. Jesus said this to test Philip, for he, Jesus himself, knew that what he would do. Philip answered him, 200 denarii, so a denarii is a day's wage, so we can work for 200 days worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get even a little. Are you following this? So they're outside of Jerusalem, in the middle of the mountains, in the middle of nowhere, all right? Big crowds are coming to Jerusalem because there's a big festival going on, all right? And so it's getting late in the day, and so Jesus asked Philip, hey, where are we gonna buy bread to feed all these people? Now, I wanna look back at verse six again.

Look at this, you guys. He said this to test Philip, for he himself knew what he was gonna do. Now, here's some things. The way we take notes around here is we just get our phone out and take pictures of the screen so we remember this, all right? So a couple things I want you to remember here. When Jesus asks anybody a question, it's not because he doesn't know the answer or what he's gonna do. Hey, Philip, you got any ideas? No, okay? He's setting something up. He's about to teach something new or show something new, okay? Jesus, look at this. Jesus will test his followers. He'll test us, not to see if we're gonna fail, but so that we can grow in an area of life that needs to get stronger. You understand that? Now, clear up some confusion. Testing is not the same thing as tempting. It's not the same thing. The goal of a temptation is to get you to fail. Let me see if I can screw you up, all right, right? Let me see if you'll fall for this, all right? It's evil. Look at this, in James chapter one, it says this. Let no one say when he or she is being tempted,

I'm being tempted by God. It's not true, for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. So temptation wants you to fail. The goal of a test is to make you stronger, all right? This is the same, James writes this, okay? James chapter one, he says this. He says, count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet various trials. Now, he's not saying, yay, another problem. He's not saying that. He says, you gotta change the way you look at what you're going through, okay? For you know that the testing, here it is, the testing of your faith produces steadfastness, or endurance, you could say that, and that endurance have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. Okay, so testing and tempting. So he's gonna test his disciples. Now, I know that Philip hasn't been following Jesus very long, just in my year or so, right? But he, and we, we need to catch on to this. When Jesus asks you a question about anything, and you don't know the answer, don't immediately jump to why what Jesus is telling you to do is impossible. Well, that's outrageous, Jesus. Do you know how much that would cost? Nobody could do that, but that's what Philip does.

Like, feed these people? Jesus, are you paying attention? Do you know how much that would cost? Like, we could get jobs and work for 200 days, go buy bread, and it wouldn't be enough to even touch that, even a little bit, right? And by the way, Jesus, we don't have any denarii, right? We're broke, right? So why is it, and I warned you, it's about to happen in a minute, truth bomb's on its way, right? Why is it that whenever Jesus asks us anything that might cost us something, denarii or anything else, right, our first reaction is, whoa, whoa, whoa, Lord, that's not gonna work. Hey, hey, thank you, God, I read in your word, I hear it in prayer, right? I don't think that's a good plan. And we start telling Jesus, the Lord of the universe, the creator of all things, the savior of the world, I'm not sure you know what you're talking about. I don't think you know how things work down here in the real world. We even give, I might be the only one, we give Jesus advice on what we think he ought to do in our situation. Does anybody else's prayer life consist mainly of telling Jesus what he needs to do in our direction? Anybody? He doesn't take my advice much, thank God, right?

So Jesus knows, and so he's testing the disciples, and he's testing us. Not to shame us, not to see if we're gonna screw up, but because he wants us, he wants to stretch our faith. He wants our faith and trust in him, and what only he can do in every part of our lives, he wants that to go. and usually the reason he wants it to grow now is because he knows we're gonna need stronger faith later for what, we don't even know what's coming. And he's preparing us for something, all right? Does that make sense? So let's see how Jesus is about to test their faith. Here we go. One of the disciples, Andrew, we met him on day one, he was Simon Peter's brother, right? Said to Jesus, there's a boy here who has five barley loaves, that's bread, and two fish, but what are they for so many, all right? So who has the loaves and fish, who has that? Little boy, hold on to that, okay? All right, so we're gonna come back to that. Keep reading, all right? Jesus said, and in other verses, that's enough, all right? He says, have the people sit down. Now there was much grass in that place, so the men sat down, about 5,000 in number. So they only counted the men, so if their wives and kids were with them, you might have 15,000 people out there in that field,

okay, a lot of people, all right? So the men sat down, about 5,000 in number. Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them, you wanna underline that so we can come back to that, all right? To those who were seated, so also the fish as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten, all those 5,000 plus kids, right? When they'd eaten their fill, he told his disciples, gather up the leftover fragments that nothing may be lost or wasted. So they gathered them up and filled 12 baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. And when the people saw this miracle that he had done, they said, this is indeed the prophet who has come into the world. Now, the underlying part, look back in verse 11, where it says that Jesus distributed the bread and fish to the people, which ultimately he did, but how he did it is really important. How he did it is brought out in the other three accounts, the Gospels. This story is told in all four Gospels, but in the other three, and this is building toward the truth bomb, all right? I won't go to all of them, but let's look at Luke chapter nine, if you have your Bible. Luke chapter nine, it's the same story, says this, says, and taking the five loaves and two fish,

Jesus looked up to heaven and said a blessing over them. Then he broke the loaves and, look at this, gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. So he handed, and then he gave them to the disciples, like pass it out. And they all ate and were satisfied, and what was left over was picked up, 12 baskets of broken pieces. So let's back up a little bit. Why did Jesus ask Philip where to buy bread to feed 5,000 people? Answer, I'm gonna test ya. Jesus knew what he was about to do, right? So what, just think, what do you think the test for Philip and the other disciples was? And I don't think it was like, you think I can feed these people? You think I can really do this? I mean, they'd already seen him perform miracles. But this is the first time that I found in the Bible, or one of the first times in the Bible where Jesus invites his followers to be part of the miracle that he wants to do. I mean, he did the healing last week, and he did the water into wine by himself, right? This is the first time he says, hey, I want you to do this one with me. So here's our problem. We have 5,000 men and their families,

and they don't have enough to eat. Question from Jesus, where are we gonna find enough food to feed them all? Immediate answer, I don't know. Not me. I don't have it, right? And what I do have wouldn't even make a difference. All right, so it can't be done. So timeout again. Let's not be too hard on Philip, or on ourselves, okay? Let's give ourselves a little break. He didn't have a category for what was about to happen. In his brain, right, two fish and five loaves of bread aren't enough. It's nothing. He'd never seen anybody turn like that into everybody had more than enough sized meal for 5,000 people. He didn't know how to do that. Do you? Say, how are we gonna feed these people? What would you say? Oh, God, I don't think we can, right? Side question, all right. Could Jesus have said a prayer like, God, make these people feel full, and their bellies are full? Could he have done that? Yeah, he's God, all right, he can do that, right? Or go back to the story when Jesus,

when he was in the desert for 40 days, he was tempted by the devil because he hadn't eaten in 40 days, and Satan said to him, why don't you just turn these stones into bread and satisfy your hunger? Could Jesus have done that? Yeah, he created the universe, all right? Yeah, yeah, all this, yes. If all this is just about making sure hungry people are fed, which is important. Feeding the poor, very important, I'm not minimizing that, but Jesus, who could have snapped his fingers, and all the hunger, and all the sickness, and all the hurt, and all the pain in the world could vanish, but Jesus decided the best way to feed these people wasn't just by praying a prayer or waving a magic Jesus one. Jesus wants to work through us, right? So he wants to work through his people. We're disciples, right? So he says this, so what do you have? I got a little bit of bread, and I got a couple fish. Give it to me. Okay, and when Jesus took what was given to him, he blessed it, he multiplied it, and then what did he do with it? He handed it back to us. He handed it back to the disciples and said, make sure it gets where it needs to go.

So here's what I think the test is. It's not, can Jesus feed 5,000 men and their families? Of course he can. The test is, when he decides to do it through us, does the food make it past the disciples or do we just keep it for ourselves? Which means we can sit around the campfire with full bellies and sing songs about how Jesus loves me, he's my provider, but we are surrounded by a field of hungry people, who if I were the hungry people, I would look in and go, is that how it works? Is that how the church works, is that it? Here's the gut punch, ready, ready, ready. Jesus doesn't have a supply problem. Jesus has a distribution problem when the supply stops with us. All right, take that one, all right, you gotta, whoa, are you talking, you, I'm not talking about her next to you, you. Here's another thing that jumps out at me in this story, and I've never gotten this before, and I've read this story probably thousands of times, but the disciples, how much food did they have? None, all right, right, or at least not much. They've got 12 grown men and Jesus and a little boy. They're gonna try to make a meal out of five hotdog buns and two sardines. Like, that's not enough for me, I'll just be honest with you, all right.

That's not sustaining, all right. But when the disciples faithfully take from Jesus what he had given them, and he distributes it as he told them to do, at the end of the day, how many baskets of leftovers were there? 12, how many disciples are there? Hmm, I started with nothing, he gave me something, I gave it away, and look. Now, if the disciples had kept what they had for themselves, they would have experienced one unfulfilling snack that probably would have left them hungrier than if they ate nothing at all, but this is the theme throughout the Bible. When they gave what they had to Jesus, and Jesus got involved in it, Jesus did something where the math with Jesus doesn't make sense, write that down. When it comes to what God wants to do in the world, Jesus and the math don't add up on the front end. On the front end, no one imagined or could see it coming, but when Jesus did what he did, and remember this, and he knew what he was about to do. He's not sitting there going, I have no idea, what am I gonna do? He knew what he was gonna do, right? That's why at the end of the story, everybody had more than enough, and the disciples who started with barely anything had a basket full.

This is not a health and wealth promise. If you give to Jesus a dollar, he'll give you 10. It's not it. If you give Jesus $100, you'll never get sick, you'll get skinnier, you'll get prettier, and your hair will grow back in. I've tried it, he hasn't done that, all right? I will say this. Listen, all right, all right. If God loves you, and I'm leaning my life against it, if God loves you, and God wants you to experience an abundant life, and he says, I'm the way and the truth and life to that abundant life, no one comes to the Father except they come through me, when he tests you and says, I wanna do something in the world to show people who I am to rescue and restore lost and broken men and women and children from sex trafficking and slavery, from hunger and injustice, and I wanna do that through you, and our response is, I don't have anything. I don't have anything that can make a difference anyway. Hey, that's a Goliath-sized problem. Jesus will ask, he will never ask this, what do you not have? I know a lot of things I don't have. He'll look, but what do you have? Give that to me, and it's a test. And if we'll trust him with that, if we will allow him to stretch our faith, on the back end, he promises he will multiply it back

to you in ways that you can't see on the front end, ready, because you've never been there before. Before you hand over your bread and fish, you don't even know how this is gonna end. We read it earlier, the end result, the goal of every test that Jesus puts in front of you is not to screw you up, it's to test you. Look at this, James again. For you know that the testing of your faith, and you go through those hard times, right, and you hold on to Jesus, your faith produces that endurance, and that endurance have its full effect. Here's the goal, that you may be perfect, like whole and complete, lacking in nothing. You're going through a hard time right now, I know, hold on to Jesus. He knows what he's gonna do, you don't. Now let's apply this to some of us, and I know some of you are thinking like, let's don't apply this to us, because I think I know where this is going. Are you gonna turn this into a money talk? No, but money is a very, very, very obvious one for us. Some of us, all right, I'm thirsty. I talk a lot. So some of us, I want you to look at your life. Some of you, right, we have a how am I gonna feed 5,000 people size problem going on in our life, anybody? And there's just no way that we can imagine, like how am I gonna do this?

How am I supposed to do that? How am I supposed to fix us, all right? How am I gonna survive that? How am I gonna pull that off? How am I gonna afford that? How am I gonna pay for it? And we've been telling God for a long time what he ought to do about it, how he should ought to fix that, and make it go away for a long time. And we're telling God, this is what you ought to do, because that makes sense to me. If God would just do this, or if my wife would just do this, or if my kids would just do this, my parents would just, then my problem would go away. And then Jesus cuts through all of that and says. You have a bigger problem than your marriage. You have a bigger problem than your addiction. You have a bigger problem, right? Here it is, right? You're the problem. And our response is just like a five-year-old, uh-uh. No, no, no, I'm good. No, I mean, I'm not perfect, but hey, Jesus, don't put this on me. And Jesus listens to us, he's so patient, right? He listens to us like argue and yell at him and stomp our foot and say, you know, let me have my way. And then he just looks at us and goes, are you done?

You done, you wanna cry a little bit more? You wanna hit me, right? Are you ready to listen? And eventually, we get to that point going, okay, what? He says, I'm gonna tell you to do something, to give me something. And your willingness to do what I'm telling you to do will be a test of your faith. It will reveal, right, if you really trust me or not. But I tell you, I already know what I wanna do in your life. I already know what I wanna do in your marriage. I know what I wanna do in your health. I know what I wanna do, right? And I know how we together are gonna get to the other side of this problem. So the problem is not my willingness to get involved, Jesus' willingness to get involved and supply everything you're gonna need to go through what you're gonna go through, but it's very much more tied to your willingness to trust and obey. We're not waiting on Jesus. He is in the house. He is right here, right? Then this is what's gonna happen. He's gonna tell you to do what he's gonna tell you to do and you will either trust and obey or you'll continue to argue with him and not obey and then nothing will change in your life

because in your brain, you can't get from, all I got's a lunchbox to feed 5,000 people because you've never seen it before. You don't know how to do it. You don't know how it'll make a difference and so you say no and you hold on to your life, which is an unsatisfactory, like, lunchable. See, think about this. Taking a new step of faith, especially, especially in the important, like, Lord, the stakes are so high here. If I lose on this, I lose everything. When our faith gets tested there, it's always gonna feel scary because you've never been there before. If it's easy, you don't even need faith. But for the, I got a big one, all right? You're gonna need faith, all right? So go back to that little boy, all right? Surrounded by 5,000 people. He's the only one who thought to pack a lunch. He's like, oh, why? And you know those people going, you know, I know what's in your bag. I can take that little 10-year-old. I can take it, right, right? And then he finds Andrew, this little kid. He just sits in there. He finds Andrew and goes, I got this. Will this help?

And here's the answer, no. Not on its own, but yes, your lunchbox, combined with Jesus getting involved in blessing and multiplying as only he can, as only God can, and the followers of Jesus taking that blessing and making sure it gets to where God meant it to go, which is why he blessed it and multiplied in the first place. Yes, kid, your lunchbox is more than enough because you gave it to Jesus. So let me personalize this. Thank you back there. All right, so Robin and I are kind of in the middle of this. So here's where I live, okay? And I think I live, everybody in the world lives here, okay? I have this much income and I have this many demands asking for it. Anybody else? Like I've got limited money and I have unlimited, I need it, I need it, I need it, I need it. It just feels like, okay, right? And so I live in that tension all the time. It's like, where am I gonna point these dollars, right? Because they're very, very limited. So this past November, right before my back surgery, we wrapped up a six-week series called Be Free, all right? We had a commitment weekend where Robin and I and thousands of us, we wrote a number on a card and then we came to the front of the auditorium and put it in a box and that number was

what Robin and I have decided through prayer, over the next two years, we will be giving to Flatirons and Be Free, the one fund, okay? And it was a leap, all right? We actually submitted our card at an earlier service and then on the drive home, Robin goes, it's not enough. It should be more. And I was like, easy, girl. One of us has a job and, no, I did not say that. Hey, babe, I know you're listening from home. I was just kidding. No, we totally agreed and then we resubmitted a new commitment, right? That was in November. Now, like many of you, all right, you work off a January through December budget. That's just how we roll at my house, okay? So, we didn't start our giving in December, all right? So, we budgeted to begin in January to be automatically deducted from my bank account. So, a couple weeks ago, when I went to my app and to check my balance, I was like, hey, ow, whoa. Stuff just got real. See, sometimes when you give to something, you might have to temporarily put something off. Like, we can't do that this month, but we'll do it next month, right? But this time, I'm looking at that and going like, we're gonna feel this one for a while. This is one of those, if you choose to do this,

you cannot do that, you can't do both. It's one or the other. Let's see, as I looked over the next two years, a lot of thoughts ran through my mind. And you're gonna run into this in your giving, and in the middle, I realized this is not about money, or travel, or buying more horses, which is on, or toys, or whatever. This is about faith. And here's, do I, I'm gonna say I, but I'm speaking for Rob and I. Do I believe that God has invited me into something to do something with him that he wants done in the world, and is it worth it? Is it worth this much money, and sacrifice every month for the next several years? Do I believe that God can take what Rob and I have willingly given to him, and do more with it than if I keep it for myself? And do I believe that on the other side of this step of faith, people will be set free, both spiritually and relationally, and literally rescued from sex trafficking? And do I believe that Rob and I will experience blessing, not financial, but peace, and joy, and gratitude, that God let us do this with him? He blessed us, and passed it, he blessed it, and then we passed it on. And now, here's what I know is happening in the world right now, because of our generosity,

because we're faithful to God. Somewhere in the world, there's a little boy and a little girl, they're not getting molested every day, or thrown away anymore, they're being saved, and they're being restored. That's what this is about, and see, the answer to all those questions is yes, I believe. I believe that, and I don't wanna miss out on what, being a part of what God is doing in the world, and seeing people set free, and entrusting them with our money, and our time, and our family, and our children, and our grandchildren, and my job, and my life after this job, my future, it keeps me from being enslaved to all the things that this world says, I can satisfy you, but they can't. Because only what is entrusted to Jesus will last forever. Everything else just gets burned up. And here's the gut punch, the get real aha moment, is this, if what God has given to us stops with us, that means people, a real people, with names, and moms, and dads, and brothers, and sisters, they don't get rescued, because it stopped with me. That means marriages will not be healed, women and children will stay in slavery, but when Jesus takes what we give to him, and blesses it, and then hands it back to us, and says distribute the bread and the fishes, everybody gets set free. Say this real quickly, look at this,

freedom happens at the speed of our generosity, say it. Freedom happens at the speed of our generosity. That's just true. God has given this to me, and it's either for me, it's for me to do something in the world. So 1,000 of us, we made a be free commitment, and you know what, that's great, you can write any number you want, and put it in a box, and go like, I wanna do that, but good intentions don't set anybody free. It's time to put your faith into action. Right, it's time for that, okay, are we gonna do this or not, we're gonna do this, that's what we said, we made a promise. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, it was be free, out in the lobby of all of our campuses, you can stop there and go, I wanna find more about this, rescuing people stuff at our be free tables, they can point you in the right direction, but let's put our faith into action. Now, we're gonna move into communion here, and all this is gonna tie together. I want you to skip down to the end of the chapter, and we're skipping over the Jesus walking on water part, you're gonna read that later, it's fascinating, all right, but the people have followed Jesus to the other side of the lake, and the reason Jesus left is because he knew that they wanted to make him be a king, because he passed out free food,

they just wanted more food, okay. So let's jump down to John chapter six, verse 25, let's pick it up there, okay. So when they found him on the other side of the lake, the Sea of Galilee, they said to him, Rabbi, teacher, when did you come here? And Jesus answered them, truly, truly, I say to you, you're seeking, you're looking for me, not because you saw miracles, but because you had your fill of loaves. You just want more food. He says, don't work for the food that perishes. Don't spend your life on the stuff that's just like, I eat it, now I consume it, now I gotta get some more, right. But for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man, I will give to you, for on me, God the Father has set his seals. So this goes back to the early test of the disciples. Our biggest problem isn't hunger, although in the moment, that's how it feels, right. But there are certain, listen to this, okay, there are certain hungers that cannot be satisfied by just consuming more stuff, which all points to your bigger problem. See, you think, we think, all right, we think that our eternal problem, our eternal hunger can be fixed by fixing our temporary painful circumstance. This is inconvenient, I don't like how this feels.

If this goes away, then I'll be fine. You can't, the ache in your, not your stomach, the ache in the hole in your soul that's longing to be filled cannot be filled by more bread or more money or a better house or a better car or a better vacation or if your marriage comes back together or if you get sober or if your cancer diagnosis goes away and your kids come home. That won't, that won't meet what's hungering in your soul. What you're hungering for is real bread. His name is Jesus. See, you'll read this, if you have your study guide, read this whole thing in your study guide this week. But Jesus tells them this. Jesus said to them, I'm the bread of life. You're just looking for stuff. I'm the bread of life. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. He said that to the woman at the well last week. But I said, I said that to you, and you've seen me, yet you don't believe. In other words, what you're really hungering for to satisfy you, not your stomach, but your life, is me. Come to me. When Jesus said, I can satisfy, we argue back with him, like, I don't know how you can help. I mean, thanks, Jesus, but my problem is a real problem. It's a marriage problem. It's a physical problem. It's a herd problem. It's a hidden problem.

It's not a spiritual problem. This is where Jesus would cut through everything and go, that's where you're wrong. You keep thinking that your problems, they're two different problems, but they are related. They're connected. And I'm not saying that your physical thing you're going through is because you made some spiritual mistakes. That's not how it works. I'm saying this. If your physical, financial, relational, health, sexual addiction problem, even if that gets fixed and we put a Band-Aid on it and it doesn't hurt as bad as it did yesterday, right, inside, in your soul, you have a cancer that's eating away at your soul. You know it. You feel it. And that's what only Jesus can fix. He says, I am the bread of life, and I can satisfy what you really are hungry for, and what you really need. And then his enemies, they're not listening, they say, he's a cannibal. Read it later. Like, what is he? Did Jesus just say we have to eat his flesh? That's what he said, right? So Jesus said to them, okay, because he knows what we're thinking. He says, truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and you know, they're just going, what is he talking about? And drink his blood. You have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day, for my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, lives in me, and I in him, as and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he, she, also will live because

of me. This, this is the bread that came down from heaven. Not like the bread the fathers ate and died. When they were in the desert and the manna came down, that's what he's talking about. Whoever feeds on this bread, me, will live forever. Jesus said these things in the synagogue as he taught at Capernaum. I've been in that building. If you keep reading, almost everybody who's hearing what Jesus is talking about goes, no, this is too much. They all leave him. They walk out of the synagogue. They walk out of the, all the five. They all go home. Did he just say we're gonna eat his flesh and drink his blood? I mean, the disciples are going, I mean, they're the ones left. They're like, ah, this is weird. They're having a hard time with it, because it didn't make sense. And Jesus knew that his disciples and that we today will have a hard time believing that only Jesus can satisfy and fix and heal what we've been holding onto, right? We've been holding onto money and bread and other people to fix our lives, and we tell ourselves, as long as I have that and I get more of that, then I'll be fine. And Jesus says, no, no, no, give that to me, and I'll do more with it than you could ever do on your own. And most of us say, no, no, no, no, I don't trust you that much. Nothing changes. After this, many of the disciples turned back and no longer were with him. So Jesus said to the 12, this is where we started, do you wanna go away as well? And Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life, and we have believed. It's been a process, but we have come to know, and we're putting our trust in you,

that you are the Holy One of God. So we're gonna move into communion. I want you to look at your life. What is your I-can't-feed-5,000-people-sized problem going on in your life? It can't be fixed. And what is it that you're trying to fix it with? What is it you're trying to satisfy it with? If I just got more of that, if that would change. But here's what I wanna do in our community. To ask the Holy Spirit, we're taking community together here in a minute. Spirit, what does Jesus want me to do? And even if you don't know how, you'll get an answer. I just believe that's how the Spirit works. You go, I don't know how that can help. How God can take whatever he's telling me to do, and do something that I know nothing about. You have to sit there and go like, because I've never been there before. I've never been on the other side of this problem. Jesus is already on the other side of the problem. And this is gonna blow your mind. He already knows what he wants to do in your life. And through that, he will finally fill that space in the whole of your soul. And it will satisfy you and give you peace. So go back to eat my flesh, drink my blood. And the disciples are going, we are following a lunatic. They didn't understand.

So, a few days later, Jesus gets everybody at a table, and he has bread. Pass that to me at the door, if you don't have it, run and get it. He took this bread and he broke it and he goes, this is my body. And again, I think they're going like, I still don't get it. And then he pours wine out, and he says, drink this. This is my blood of a new agreement, a new covenant that I'm about to make. making with you, and they did not get it, because that was Thursday night. And then Friday afternoon, they look up there and there he is hanging on a cross. His body's broken, his blood's pouring down. Behold, the Lamb of God takes away the sin of the world. So here's what I'm asking you to do, is you take that bread as we worship together and drink that juice, all right? Jesus, what am I supposed to do? And even though you go like, I don't know if I can do that. I know, but you and he can. Does that make sense? On your own, all you got's some sardines and some hot dog buns. That's not gonna change the world,

unless you give it to Jesus, unless you give your marriage to Jesus, unless you invite Jesus into your addiction, into your pain, into the thing that I don't know how I'm gonna make it through this anymore. On your own, it will slaughter you. But with Jesus, the math changes. But you have to invite him in. He will not kick in the door of your heart. You have to open and go, come on in. So I'm gonna pray, and then we're gonna worship and have a conversation with Jesus. Jesus, you're so patient and kind, and we just tell you no and stomp our feet, and give you advice, and you're just so good and patient. And thank you for not doing what we tell you to do. But we're bringing something to you, and we don't know what we're gonna do with it. It just seems overwhelming. And so we're asking you to get involved in our life. And the reason we believe that we can trust you is that on a day in history, you demonstrated your level of commitment, your level of love towards us is that you hung on a cross for us. So we wouldn't have to. And your bread, your body was broken, and your wine, your blood was poured out for us. And now, as we take this communion,

you flow through our veins. You sustain us. And because of your love for us, we're gonna be okay. We're gonna make it. Because with you, the math all changes. So Jesus, we're listening, and we're giving you thanks for loving us. In your name, I pray, amen, amen? All right. ♪ How great the chasm that lay between us ♪ ♪ How great the chasm that lay between us ♪ ♪ How high the mountain I could not climb ♪ ♪ In desperation I turned to heaven ♪ ♪ How great the chasm that lay between us ♪ ♪ And spoke your name into the night ♪ ♪ Then through the darkness your loving kindness ♪ ♪ Tore through the shadows of my soul ♪ ♪ The work is finished, the end is written ♪ ♪ Jesus Christ, my living hope ♪ ♪ Who could imagine so great a mercy ♪ ♪ What heart could fathom such boundless grace ♪ ♪ The God of ages stepped down from glory ♪ ♪ To wear my sin and bear my shame ♪ ♪ The cross is spoken, I am forgiven ♪ ♪ The King of Peace holds me His own ♪ ♪ Beautiful Savior, I'm yours forever ♪ ♪ Jesus Christ, my living hope ♪ ♪ Hallelujah, praise the one who set me free ♪ ♪ Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me ♪ ♪ Death has lost its grip on me ♪
