It's just another Hebrew name for God. So we would love if you would continue to worship with us. with us this morning. We worship you. God, this morning, I'm just grateful for the reminder that you are mighty, that you are powerful, that you are Elohim, God, the God of gods. Lord, I thank you today that we have a space to declare power, to declare truth over our lives. God, that dead things come back to life because of Jesus, that you are the same God of Moses and of Jacob and Mary. And that God, we stand here in awe of who you are and we worship you. No one is higher, no one is greater than you, God. So we remind ourselves of that truth today. God, I'm so grateful for your presence in this room. I pray that we would just notice you today. Would you help us to just rest in your presence? God, I pray that you would start to heal what's broken, that you would break the things that we are chained to. God, thank you for your immeasurable grace that you can do more than we could ever ask or imagine. God, thank you for that truth today and your promises to us. God, we love you and we trust you. It's in Jesus' holy and mighty name that we pray today and all God's people said, amen.

It's designed to help us be aware of what's happening, to be educated, and then to learn how can we partner together to stop human trafficking. Stairs are a problem, that's all I'm saying. Hey, welcome to Flatirons. Hey, before we get into this, I got a couple things. First of all, if you have a Bible with you, we're gonna be in John chapter two. We're gonna spend this whole, from now to Easter, studying through the book of John. And a lot of y'all picked up, 10,000 of you picked up these over the last week, and if you forgot yours, we're out. We're out of them, but we have more on order, so they should be back next week. Last night, I said, go out to the lobby and get some, and a bunch of people did, and they got them all. So anyway, it's really, really helpful. I'm getting great feedback on how you can work through the book of John with questions and things like that. But we're gonna be in John chapter two in just a minute.

Before we do that, I have kind of an announcement. I asked if I could actually make this one, because we have a lot of people come on staff at all of our campuses, and as we're planning new campuses, we're gonna be hiring more and more people, and we don't usually bring new hires up here and introduce them to the church, but this one's different. And let me tell you what I mean by that. I've been here, I guess, almost 20 years, and shortly after I got here, God put something in my heart that said this, is that if we can run after the hearts of men, of husbands, of fathers, of brothers, of sons, who say, I want to be a good husband, I wanna be a good father, I wanna be a good man, I'm kind of making it up as I go, we believe that if men, if we could, I don't wanna say pull our heads out of something, but if we could figure out some stuff, a lot of the problems of the world of women and children, they get better, they go away. Now, women, you're not faultless in this, but I'm just saying, men, we're leaders, right? And so, over the last 20 years, we've really run after the hearts of men, and so people go, it's like, do you have a men's ministry? And my response is, every weekend around here is a men's ministry, kind of, you know? But we also understand that we need to get more and more specific.

So this past year, we began a search to find a men's pastor, and that's a pretty daunting task, all right? Because my standard for this is really, really high, because I guess I'm selfish, or I'm protective, or whatever, but I really wanna protect what God has built here. So as we're looking at interviewing these men across the country, we found a man that, here's how I would describe him. I would love for my son to sit under his teaching. I'm willing to put myself under his teaching, and that's a high bar. So it's not just for Lafayette, but for all of the Flatirons. Will you welcome John Watkins, our new men's pastor? Come on, give it up for him, right here. Yeah. What's up? Yeah, I love this guy. He will be in cowboy boots by Easter. That's a prophecy right there, right? Is that fair? Have you been to a boot bar before? I have not. Nike Outlet. Nike Outlet, it's not the same. Anyway, hey, John, thank you, all right? You moved Brie, and you got an 18-month little boy, and a little girl on the way, and you moved from Virginia. Your life was good, 20 years of ministry, and you're doing good.

Why did you say yes, right? Just preach. Yeah, man, so it's funny, interesting how Jim talked about the 20 years God has been working in his life, because it's been about 20 years that God has been curating, in my life, in my heart, a passion to see men walk in freedom. And a couple of months ago, and let me just be clear, I'm still getting to know Jim, right? But my admiration for him is not manufactured. I have watched him from this stage. I have listened to him. I have sat across from him, and it's rare, almost, I don't think I've ever seen a heart for this ministry, specifically men, in my life. And I said, I gotta be a part of that. And so that's what caused a man to travel 1,700 miles, and I know it's 1,700 miles, because I drove it twice. I didn't let my pregnant wife drive this time, but next time. But yeah, it was 1,700 miles, and that's why I'm here, because of this man and his leadership. And I just got a few things that I would love to share with you. One, I know how we see our world is important. And God has just given me a passion to see men. handle, engage, and apply the word of God to their life. And that the word of God is not just for Jim to hold up here and preach to us,

but that the word of God is important to you as a husband, as a dad, as a friend, as a son, as a professional. And so this May, we're launching our men's conference every year, Unfiltered. And at Unfiltered, the plan is to help you practically apply the word of God to your life. I'm excited about it because we have great speakers like Joby Martin, Scott Nickel, and it's gonna be amazing. It's gonna be an awesome time. And listen, it's not gonna just be a one-off. It's not gonna just be two nights of going after God. We want this to be the catalyst for men this year, that as we partner with the Be Free Initiative and what Pastor Jim has to share with us, that we be men of the word, not just for one month, but that we carry that through resources, videos, chats, and you're gonna be hearing a lot more about that coming up real soon. There's also this big idea of stepping into community. And if you're like me, more of an introvert, maybe even a little shy, reserved, kind of standoffish, you're like, bro, I'm at church this morning. I'm doing community. And you are, yeah, you really are. But here's what I found out, is that the greatest way the enemy attacks men is in isolation. And for me, I know isolation is comfortable until it's not. And for a man like me that struggled with lust and passivity and poor spending habits,

which are just a few things of a long list of things that I struggle with, those things grow in isolation. And so I would love to tell you that I heard somebody talk about, I was like, yo, pick me, I wanna be in community. No, it was somebody that cared enough about me that invited me into community. And that's what this is right now. It's a personal invitation to say, next week, all across our campuses, we are launching our Connect groups. And you're like, John, what's the Connect group? I think I heard about it, but here's what it is. Yes, it's a large group where we unpack Bible studies and we unpack John's series, like what Jim's going through and talking about. More importantly, Connect is an opportunity for you just to come and be you. That's it. And so here's my personal invitation, next Sunday, across our campuses. Sign up, we'll be in the lobby. I told you why I was here in part, but here, this is what wakes me up in the morning. This is what puts a battery in my back. If you're like, John, what's the goal for us as men? What do you got?

That when you attend church, that when you attend events, Connect, unfiltered, that what you hear as a man, that what you see here as a man, that that will be reflected in your home, in your profession, and in the places that you frequent. That when you hear, that it won't just be coming to church, but your life will reflect the power of God. That's the goal, that's my desire, and that's my hope for you. Hey, if you have a Bible, you have an app, all right, let's get to John chapter two. I wanna jump right into this. There's so much we're gonna cover. Honestly, about halfway through this week, as I was preparing my talk for you today, I had to push pause at the end of my talk today. We're gonna push pause, and I'm gonna say this, okay? We're just gonna stop, and I want you to come back next week as we pick this up. So it's part one and part two. I just don't wanna rush through this, because I promise, at least this is what I believe, all right, that if you can take in

what God has been teaching me over the last several months, that I believe that he wants me to share with you all today, and if you can sit in it this week, and then come back, and if you can think about it, and about what's going on in your life, all right, here's my challenge, but I believe this is true. It might, like the power of God's word, right, it might change the way you see God, and the circumstances of your life, good, bad, ugly, whatever that is, and explain, all right, I see God this way, I see my life this way, it might explain why your faith is constantly taking hits, and leaving you in a place where your trust in God is shaky. I don't know if I believe anymore, because I can't put some stuff together, got it? That's where we're going, ready? All right, so I wanna start by making a pretty strong statement that when I wrote it, my question was, that's gonna bring up some defensiveness in some of us, or maybe some internal pushback, because when I say it out loud, we're gonna read it off the screen here in a minute, but it's gonna feel a little judgy, like who do you think you are, right, or critical of you, so let me preemptively let everybody off the hook by saying this. What I'm about to say, this statement,

every one of us who says on some level, I believe in God and I follow Jesus, what I'm about to say, we're all guilty of this, all of us, all right? And guilty's not really the right word because what I wanna say isn't necessarily wrong, like in a sinful way, all right? Actually, what I'm gonna say, it's pretty normal, so if what I say describes you, it's pretty normal, but my point, here's my point today, is that while we all have to start here someplace, we must move on, we must move on to something better to hold on to when it comes to our faith. So the way we take notes around here at Flatirons, we just get our phones out and take pictures of the screen because you're gonna sit there and go, and I'm gonna remember that, but you won't. I know you, man, you won't, okay? So go ahead and get your phones up, but here's a statement I wanna start with. Most of us, and I'll put myself in that, most of us start our faith journey with Jesus as a contractual, conditional relationship that says this. So here's the contract. Jesus, if you do this for me, then I will believe in you, and then I'll trust you, and then I'll follow you. Everybody follow me? All right. And of course, most of us, that starts with this. They're like, hey, Jesus, I've kinda heard about you.

If you can pay for my sin, if you can remove my condemnation, if you can get me out of hell by letting what you did on the cross, if you can let that pay for me, I'm in. I'll trust you, all right? And that's a great place to start, right? And that's where a lot of us, the lights went on. I believe that Jesus is the Christ. He's the only son of God. I believe he lived a perfect life. He showed us what God is like. We talked about that last week. He died on a cross as a perfect sacrifice for my sin. Lot more on that next week. He was buried in a tomb, and then three days later, rose from the dead as confirmation that he is who he says he is, and he'll keep every promise he will make to me, all right? That is a great place to start, your faith journey, all right? And if you have to leave early at any of our campuses, that's a great place to finish, all right? It's good, all right, it's good. But for most of us, who Jesus is and what he has done spiritually in our life, that's not where our faith takes the biggest hit. No, for most of us, our faith gets shaken when in the daily, ordinary course of everyday life, stuff happens, right? Hard things happen, painful things happen,

confusing things happen, unfair, this doesn't make sense, those things. Stuff happens, and the contract that we had with Jesus, at least in our minds, feels broken because what we said earlier, Jesus, if you'll do this for me, then I'll believe in you. Somehow, unconsciously, all right, has morphed into, hey, Jesus, I'm doing some stuff for you. I expect you to do something for me. So we're going along, right, living our life, going to school, going to our jobs, all right? We're living our life imperfectly, but better than it used to be. We're trying, and then bam, something hard or bad or painful happens. Our fault, somebody else's. And we look up at heaven and go, hey, God, what's the deal? Pray that prayer. What's the deal? Because I can't put what's going on in my life and then put it beside, lay it beside a God that says he's good and loves me and will take care of me, and then connect the dots and have them both make sense. And then I'm left with, maybe I was wrong. Maybe I can't trust God. Anybody been there? Just nod your head. All of us, right? Now, I promise, we've all been there or we will be there.

All of us. I've been there, all right? And I think everybody starts there. That's my point. A case study last week, and if you weren't here last week, you've got to go back. We are taking a different angle on John than I've ever even thought of, all right? Last week, we looked at the faith journey of the author of the book of John. His name is, I'm so proud of you. Anyways, but we looked at that journey that he was on from the first day he met Jesus on the side of that lake and what he was hoping for and what he was looking to get from Jesus to later if something happens, and his faith and his understanding had grown into something deeper and different and better. Unshakable. So a quick review last week, and then we'll get into chapter two, all right? When John first shows up, he's an angry teenager, probably 18, 19 years old. He's grown up in Bethsaida, this little village, where he has been looked down upon his whole life. He's powerless, and he's looking for a way out of that. He's actually looking for a way up. And the day he meets Jesus, Jesus has just performed this miracle by filling up nets with fish for some poor fishermen,

and John and his brother, they're poor fishermen, and so they're impressed at all of this, and then John accepts Jesus' invitation, come follow me. Now, John did not, this is me, but I'm pretty sure I'm right here. John did not initially follow Jesus for some spiritual reason. He didn't know anything about the Messiah stuff, right? But here's what I think John was thinking. If Jesus can pull off that, miracles like that, if he can make fish jump in a net, that means Jesus is powerful. And if I attach myself to Jesus, he might be my ticket out of here. He might be my ticket out of powerless to powerful, so nobody's ever gonna touch me or harm me like I had to endure all my life. Here's the comment, if I follow Jesus, bad stuff won't happen, right? And a lot of us jumped into this Christian pool with that thought in mind, right? John is angry, all right, and he's looking for a level of power where he can't, I'm quoting from last week, "'Call down fire on his enemies and destroy him.' "'Wouldn't that be great in traffic?' "'Honk, boom.'" All right, there we go, right, right? It'd be great, right? So all through the gospel of John,

whenever John opens his mouth, he's either angry or he's jockeying for a position of power. Hey, Jesus, can I be in charge? I don't know how many times he says a version of that. But about halfway through that book, something changes in John that changes him for the rest of his life. But John started in the same place that we all do. Jesus, what can you do for me? Because if you can do that, I'll follow you. But if you can't or you won't or you let me down, I might tap out. So we're gonna pick up in John chapter two. If you put this in the context of the other gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, this, what we're gonna read today, it happens a few days after Jesus fills up those nets, that lake, all right? And that's a miracle, but it wasn't really a public miracle. There's just a few people there at the beach that day, okay? But in John chapter two, Jesus is about to go public and the word's gonna get out. So I'm gonna read this pretty quickly. It's pretty self-explanatory. A lot of us have heard this story before, but it's an example of everything I've been talking about up to this point. So John chapter two, here we go. After I have a drink of water. So you think, all right, here we go. So on the third day, there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee.

I'll explain this. And the mother of Jesus, what's her name? Come on, it's awesome, all right? The mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, they have no wine. So I was over there about three years ago. Cana is this little village. It's about a 15-minute walk from Nazareth, the village where Jesus grew up in. So everybody knows everybody. They all grew up together, right? And so some friends of Jesus's family are getting married over in Cana. And weddings back then might take like the last few days. And sometime during the celebration, they run out of wine. Been to that party, all right? Which culturally brings embarrassment and shame on the groom's family. They're hosting the party. Because one of the most important tenets of the Jewish faith is hospitality, all right? So Mary knows, she knows her son Jesus is special, right? She's watching him, right? She was there, right? So she knows, she goes to Jesus and she says this. Hey, son, listen, there's a problem. Fix it. There's a problem, they're out of wine.

Fix it, all right? Look at verse four here. And Jesus said to her, woman, what's this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come. And I've read that before. That's harsh. Say, Mom, not my problem. Don't have time for this. But what he's really saying is, all right? Hey, Mom, all right? You know that I am here for a bigger, deeper mission. You know why I'm here, which is true, right? Mary knew this from day one. Angel, here's what's gonna happen. Here's the plan, all right? She knew that. Here's the plan. I have come to redeem and restore mankind back into relationship with God. But even though Mary knew that, pay attention to this. But in the crisis of that moment that day, I'm gonna say it again. In the crisis of what was happening with her friendships and whatever, the tyranny of the urgent. This is on fire. Mary's unspoken statement is this. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Jesus, all good. We'll get to that someday.

But we have a problem right now. Fix it. So verse five says this. His mother said to the servants, do whatever he tells you. And if you keep reading this, and do this this afternoon if you want. Jesus says, go take all those big jars over there, fill them up with water, and then take a sample of that water to the wedding planner. And the wedding planner, he tasted it, and the water had become wine. And the wedding planner doesn't know where the wine came from. So he goes over to the bridegroom and goes, hey buddy, way to go. But at most parties, people serve the good stuff first. The expensive wine first. You know where everybody has that glass and they're swirling it around. Go look at the legs on that. It has a hint of orange peel. Like whatever, snobby, whatever, all right? But then, after that, after everybody's hammered and their taste buds are like fried, he'd bring out the Costco black box of wine. $1.99, Boone's Farm, let's go, all right? And he says, I'm confused that you save the good stuff for now.

Okay, we're not gonna talk about that, all right, but quick question. Whose fault is it that they ran out of wine at the party? Here's one of the, it's not Jesus's fault. He was there as one of the invited guests. It was probably the wedding planner's fault for failing to plan well, but ultimately, it's gonna land on the bridegroom. His name, his reputation will be shamed and tarnished. If on the first day of your marriage, you came and did this, brother? Now, hold on to this, verse 11. This, turn water into wine, the first of his signs, public signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and manifested, displayed his glory. Like, this is what I can do, right? And look at this, it's really important. And his disciples believed in him, quiz. Why did his disciples believe in Jesus? Why? They saw him turn water into wine. Last week, here's the good. If Jesus can make sure my nets are full of fish, I'll follow him, this week. If Jesus can turn my water into wine, I'll believe in him. Follow me? A few weeks from now, I'm gonna be teaching on this, John chapter six, all right? Jesus takes, very famous story, takes five loaves of bread and two little fish

and somehow feeds over 5,000 people with that little bit and there's 12 baskets of leftovers and the people respond like this. Look at this, we're gonna get to this in a few weeks. This is indeed the prophet, like the Messiah, who is coming to the world. This is Jesus thinking. Perceiving then that they, the people who just ate bread, were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself. Paraphrase, all right? If Jesus can deliver bread, he gets to be king, right? Later, the crowds track Jesus down and they're looking for him, not because they're interested in what Jesus can do spiritually in their lives. Here's why they look for Jesus. We want more free bread. And Jesus goes like, I know what you want, but let me tell you, the bread you're looking for, it perishes, you eat it and it's gone and so he uses that opportunity for the first time to say this, I'm the bread of life. And if you believe, if you just trust me, you'll not be hungry for what you're really looking for. All right, time out, let's apply this and then we'll move on, all right? What's that look like in your life? Or in my life? Here's what it looks like in my life, the contract, right?

Jesus, if you can make sure my nets are full, I don't have nets, my God, Jesus, if you can make sure I have enough income, like my nets or my bank account, it can't even hold it all, then I'll trust you. Jesus, if you can turn my water into wine, if you can take this little bit of something that is about to run out in my life and then turn it into something more than maybe, Jesus, if you can fix my problem, all right, and bail me out so I'm not embarrassed or shamed by a problem that really, it's kind of my own fault because I brought it on myself, buddy, listen, if you'll just do that for me, then I'll believe in you and trust you, but if you won't do that for me, then I don't know if I can believe in a God who obviously doesn't care enough about me to help a brother out when I need him, right? Speaking for myself, that would describe the majority of my prayer life over the last 50 years. Anybody else? It's contractual. We say we're looking for living water, we say we're looking for the bread of life, for that eternal, most important thing, the only Jesus can deliver, right? And I'm sure we are, but too often, our faith isn't so much about who Jesus is as much as it is about our ability to make sense of

and understand and interpret the circumstances of our life and the role or our expectations of what Jesus ought to do or shouldn't do according to what makes sense to us. Right, you following me? And here's the truth, we can't put bad circumstances beside of a good Jesus and have it make sense. Our faith takes a hit because when life hurts, this is true, we are horrible at interpreting what's really going on and what's happening in our life and where God is right, and here's where we all jump when life gets really, really bad. Our first question is why and who can I blame, right? So quick thought and then we'll move on and you don't have to agree with me on this, but I'm right, but here it is, all right? Follow this, okay? You don't need faith when your nets are full. You following me that, all right? You don't need a lot of faith when the wine is plentiful, when there's more than enough of what you want or what you feel like you need going on in your life. You don't need faith when there's plenty of money to bank and your marriage is exciting and romantic and everybody in your family is happy and healthy and everybody's getting along. Of course you believe, why not believe, all right? Of course God loves me, look at us, all right? Of course he's keeping his promise to take care of us. Look at my life or look at their life over there and here's the phrase some of us Christians use to explain.

Explain it all, it goes like this. Yes, we're really blessed. The Lord's been a blessing, yeah, just blessed, all right? Which may be true, good for you, all right? Here's the flip side. What happens when you don't have enough money in the bank? Or when you lose your job? Or when your marriage hits the rocks? When you or somebody that you love gets a cancer diagnosis? When your family blows apart? So does that mean God doesn't love you? Because he can't or won't help you? Does that mean that God isn't blessing your life? Because this isn't what I thought my life would look like. So here's where we go. I don't know if I can believe in or trust a God who allows my life to be so hard and unfair. If God could fix it, why doesn't he? Anybody been in that dark place? Of course you have. And this is, I'll be honest, this isn't theoretical. This is really, really close to home because Robin and I, we have a really, really close friend. Long time Christian, all his life, all right? Someone who has believed in God, who has faithfully served Jesus and the church all of his life. But recently, he lost his wife after a long, horrible battle with cancer.

Some of you been there. And right now, he's sitting in the place of, when I needed God most, he wasn't there for me. He's made statements like this. Religion has done nothing for me. I don't even think I believe anymore. And here, I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet, right? But deep down, I think he does believe, but right now, he's angry with God. And what we talked about last week is this. Most of the time, anger's real name is grief, sadness. When you get through enough counseling down to the root of it, I'm just sad and scared, right? Right, and that's what it is. See, he can't put seeing his wife suffer like he had to watch her suffer and then losing the love of his life, he can't put that together with a God who he always thought loved him and would protect him and take care of them. He can't put them side by side and say they both have to be true. Again, we will be there, right? And I'll say this. He was raised, I'm gonna be pretty broad here, but you can probably figure it out. He was raised in a faith community which is based on a contractual deal with God. If you do this, God will do that, all right? And if you don't do this or don't do it the right way

or don't do it enough times in a row, then why would you expect God to do anything for you? And so when we're going through all this, here's how I've said it before. This is where our friend and a lot of us find ourselves when life is painful and doesn't make sense. We land in one or two or we bounce back and forth. It goes like this. Something bad happens, here's where we go. There's something wrong with me and that's why this bad thing happened. That's where we go. Why, what did I do wrong? Why is this, is God punishing me for what I did 20 years ago? Is it now coming back? And did she get in a car wreck because I did something wrong? Did they get cancer because I did, right? There's something wrong with me. Or we'll flip to this. Then there's something wrong with God and he either can't or won't help me. And you're sitting there going, but this isn't the God I thought. I thought God loved me. How could a loving God allow or cause this to happen? And no matter where, play both of those conclusions out, here's where it lands. Either way, I'm on my own.

And that's a lonely place to be. Like I said, my friend was raised in a faith system which was very much based on if your life is good, God loves you, and if your life is bad, if bad stuff happens, either it's your fault or somebody else's fault, it's because God has abandoned you and you're on your own. You better get your act together. Now here's the thing, and this is why I said this earlier. I don't think that what we're going through in those moments or feeling in those confusing, painful, this doesn't make sense moments, I don't want this to happen. I don't think feeling that or thinking that is necessarily a wrong thing on a sinful level. I think it's more a matter of I just don't understand. I don't understand, I can't, where God is and what God is like when it hurts this bad. And here's the other thing, and we're gonna get to a lot of this next week with the story of Jesus clearing out the temple, it's so good, all right, and driving out the people who turned God's house into something it wasn't meant to be, all right. Here's what we're gonna get to. Everybody in Jesus' life, from his mom to his disciples to every person that sat in a crowd like this and heard him teach had been raised to believe if bad things happen to you, it's because there's something broken between you and God. good things happen to you, what you have,

where you come from, what you're able to do, all right, then it must be because God is blessing you. And he's gonna turn this over with this thing called the Beatitudes. You got that wrong. And next week he's gonna start. Jesus is gonna turn all that upside down next week. But here's how, I'm gonna cut this off. Here's how I wanna land the plane this week, and hopefully you'll come back for part two next week. Now, if you've been around Flatirons for any length of time, two, three, four Easters at least, all right, I almost always tell the story every two or three years, same story on Easter every two or three years. I'll probably do this Easter, I'll have to check, all right, right. But if you have your Bible with you, go to Luke chapter five, Luke chapter five. And it just makes my heart so happy to see so many heads go down in pages. It's the pastor's music. Here we go, anyway, so, all right. So here's the story, all right. It's Luke chapter five. It's a story about a man who is paralyzed. We don't know why. I always think he had a camel accident. That's just me, I made it up, all right. But he's paralyzed, and he's carried to Jesus

by his friends, because his friends had heard Jesus can heal people. And then when they get to the house where Jesus is inside teaching, there's such a crowd, they can't get in the house. And so they climb up on a roof, they dig a hole in the roof and lower their friend down. These are good friends. That's like three felonies right there. But we gotta get our friend to Jesus. And so here comes, down, all right. And Jesus, this is what it says in Luke. It says, when Jesus saw their faith, he looks at the paralyzed man. Here's what he says to him. Son, your sins are forgiven. And several things happen in that moment. One I can prove, one I think, all right. First one, it's in the words, right. The religious leaders lose their minds that Jesus would be so arrogant as to suggest that he could forgive sins. Because everybody knows only God can forgive sins. So Jesus, you claim to be God or something? And the answer is, yes I am. Only God can forgive sin. You're right about that. So stick around and watch what happens. The other thing that happened, and again, this is, I try to put myself in that room

when I read the Bible. So this is what I would have done, all right. This is how I would have responded, right. If I were there that day. The four guys looking down through the hole in the roof, like, all right, all right. And the guy on the floor whose life had literally, it was broken, falling apart. He's looking up at Jesus, all right, hoping that Jesus can fix his leg problem. So when everybody hears your sins are forgiven, what had to go through their minds and their hearts and their emotions in this painful, our friend's life has been shattered and it is over, unless Jesus, you do something about this, in the moment. Here's what I think went through the room. Disappointment. What, what'd he say? Thank you, Jesus, we will file that away for later. But that's not why we need you today. See, Jesus, if you're not paying attention, his biggest problem doesn't feel like, is he going to heaven or hell? His biggest problem feels like his body is broken and he can't walk. And we came looking for you because we heard, we believe, we have faith that if anybody can do anything about his problem, it's you. That's why we're here. So here's what's going on in the room.

One line of thought is this, religion, right? This man's body is broken, most likely, because he did something wrong, he must have sinned, and this is God's punishment, and only God can forgive sin. And on the other side of the room is this line of thought in the moment. I don't care a lot about God's sin dilemma right now. And we've been there, I just know my friend, my wife, my husband, my child, my mom, is in pain, and I just need you to fix it. So Luke writes that Jesus knows the thoughts of everybody in the room, that's so scary, right? So Jesus knows what's going on, so Jesus asks this question, okay, which is easier? Which is easier, to say anyway, your sins are forgiven, or to say, rise up and walk? Now think about that, which one's easier to say? Here's the answer. It's easier to say your sins are forgiven. Because if you say it, who knows if it's true or not? I mean, you come up to me in the lobby and go, I really messed up, and I go, your sins are forgiven. Oh, who, what qualifies me? Why should you believe that your sins are actually forgiven? Why don't you have any level of confidence that it happened, or maybe this is just some, you know, rip-off motivational guru making claims that he can't back up? Anybody can say your sins are forgiven.

But if you say to a paralyzed man, get up and walk, and then the man actually gets up and walks, like, logically, if Jesus can do that, then maybe he can do the other thing, forgive sins. So keep reading, look at verse 24. I just love this story. But that you may know, if you have your Bible, I'd underline that phrase, but that you may know that the Son of Man, that's a Messiah, that's a Messiah, that's a Messiah, Messiah title, has authority on earth to forgive sins. that's a Messiah, that's a Messiah, So time out here, right? that's a Messiah, that's a Messiah, Jesus is saying, I'm him, I'm the son of God. that's a Messiah, that's a Messiah, I am the prophesied Messiah. I have the authority to forgive sins. I have the ability to reconcile people back into a relationship with God from whatever it is that has separated it from God. That's why I'm here. You just don't care, or you don't believe me. So I'm about to do something that has a deeper meaning than simply fixing this man's urgent, temporary problem. And it will actually point to something bigger so that you will know that what I claim that I can do is true. So pick up the rest of that verse again, look at this. But that you may know that the son of man

has authority on earth to forgive sins. He said to the man who was paralyzed, I say to you, rise, pick up your bed, and go home. Here's the response, look at this. And immediately, he rose up before them and picked up what he'd been laying on and went home, glorifying God. I bet, right? And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, we have seen extraordinary things today. Yeah, you think? So the man's urgent, physical problem is fixed, and he jumps up and he glorifies God, and they all left saying, we've seen something amazing. Now, here's where my head goes, all right? And I wonder, as they all filed out of the room and did the, you know, whatever down the road, like, you can walk, all right? I wonder if Jesus was left standing there alone in that room, seeing people focused on and cheering for that man who had been healed, and I don't wanna take away from that. What a great day. And we all hope that we could pray that prayer, and she just gets out of bed in the ER, right? Or walks out of there, right? We all, we all, I hope that happens with my sick friend or my child or the person in my life that's struggling with cancer.

We all, praise God, right? But I wonder if Jesus, like, as he watched them all leave, if he called out to the man or his friends in the crowd walking away, and maybe he yelled something like this, hey, does anybody wanna talk about the other thing? The thing that I said, this temporary healing was pointed to because, ready for this thing? Because it's actually more important. And here's what I mean by temporary healing and more important. So, like, I try to put myself into these stories. So, let's call the paralyzed man who was lower down in front of Jesus, let's call him Joe. I watch a lot of Family Guy. If you don't know what that means, you're a better Christian than me. Okay, so, Joe's life was super hard and painful. Culturally, everybody in town believed he was being cursed for some sin, his sin or the sin of his parents or something like, but he would be reduced to a humiliating life of begging on the side of the road. He probably died pretty soon. And then Jesus healed him, and I'm sure, I bet, I bet his life got better, right? And his friends and family were so thankful. The Bible says they gave glory to God, as they should have, and they were filled with awe. That's not a bad thing. That's what I would do in the moment, right?

That's how I would feel. Question, here we go, ready? Where's Joe today? It's not, here's a good answer. Not here. Well, why didn't he hear? Because he's dead. I don't know how he died or why he died. Maybe, probably fell off another camel. We'd never learn our lessons, all right? Maybe, I'm making that up. Maybe he got sick, but maybe he lived a really good life, and he met this girl, and they had a family, and he lived and became an old grandpa or something like that. But a day came in his life when he died. And in that moment, what was the only thing that mattered? No matter if he had been healed that day by Jesus or not, no matter if his life had been good or unfair or hard, in that moment, what's the only thing that mattered? What mattered wasn't, did my body work till the last day? Did my marriage work out, and it was just fruitful? Was I a good dad, all right? Did I get a few more years on Earth? All those, right, right. No, the only thing that mattered in that moment, and nothing else mattered if this question is not answered the right way. Here's the question. Was Jesus your Lord and Savior?

Joe, did you put your trust not in your circumstances, not in some conditional contractual agreement with Jesus that said this, hey, Jesus, Lord, if you keep the bad stuff away, the hard stuff away, the painful stuff away from me and the people I love, as long as I don't get cancer, as long as my kids make it home every night safely, as long as you turn my water into wine, as long as you keep my nets full and plenty of bread on the table, then you're my Lord. I put my faith in you. No, no, no. The only question that matters in eternity is this. Did you put your faith in the Son of God as the only one who has the authority and the ability to forgive your sin? Because if the answer to that question is yes, then I don't know what's going on in your life, but anything and all things that would try to tell you that you've been separated from God, they are gone. They've been removed. And if the answer is no, then no matter how good or how hard your life is, was, you're on your own. You are responsible to pay for your own sin and the price or the wage of sin is death. I don't care how good your life was. Now listen, we're gonna wrap this up and we're gonna sing a great song. We all start there. We all start with a contractual,

God, if you do this for me, save me, help me, whatever, then I'll believe in you and trust you. We just can't stay there. Because if we stay there, it is a matter of time until the circumstances of your life and your understanding of what a good God is allowing to cause you whatever to happen, they will collide and they won't make sense. And your faith will take a hit and it will fall apart. If you lean, here's where we're going next week, if you lean your faith against anything other than the words of Jesus in John chapter three, verse 16, on a day in history, because God so loved you and me, Jesus went to a cross to pay the price for our sin. He didn't have to, he just loved us. He perished so that you don't have to perish, I don't have to perish. Instead, we get to experience eternal life and the only reason that you can believe that, because it's pretty audacious, that you can trust that his promise of forgiveness is true and actually works and happens for you is not because, obviously, because my bank account's full. It's not because the people that you love never got sick or sad or hurt after that day. No, so that you can know Jesus has the authority and the ability to forgive your sins after they nailed him to a cross and stuck him in a grave. Three days later, my God arose from the dead. And that is the foundation of our faith

that cannot be moved and if you try to build your life or your faith on any other rock, any other foundation, it is a matter of time, it's gonna fall apart. Now, we're gonna pick up with Jesus clearing out the temple next week and you gotta come back, I'm a totally nerd out on some Bible history stuff, going all the way back. Couple years ago, we worked our way through the unseen realms, spiritual warfare stuff. We're going back there, right, it's gonna get weird, but I think next week will help us actually understand like, so why is Jesus dying on a cross? And how his sacrifice was better than that temple and all those animals that were slaughtered in there for years. Now, I brought up a lot of stuff for you and I want you to sit in it this week. I want you to wrestle with it. I want you to talk about it at dinner. It's like, I don't know if I agree with that or that's exactly how I feel, whatever that is. But here's what I wanna do, same thing we did last week. I wanna leave you with a few passages out of the Bible for you to file away, we'll put them online, but take a picture of them, that's what I would do. And here's what I want you to do, file them away, memorize them, mark them in your Bible and here's why. This is a promise from Jesus. If you'll take this word of God and read some parts of it and go like, I didn't get that part,

I don't understand that part. Jesus said this, the Holy Spirit has the ability to reach into what you have learned in here and pull out the right thing at the right time. Anybody experience that? Right, and here's why this is so important. And I would love to be wrong about this. But here's what's true, a day will come when you won't be able to understand or put the hard circumstances of your life together with what you always thought about God and what you thought or hoped he would always do or never do and then he didn't or he did or whatever and you will be in a place of my good friend asking, where is God when I need him most? So I wanna look at the conclusions of some authors in the Old Testament, we talked about this last week, all the authors, they were living their life out with God, they were trying to work out stuff with God, that some were on mountaintops, some of them were in pits, some of these were written from a cave because people were trying to cut their heads, I mean, it's like they had hard lives. And I believe the Holy Spirit said, well, write that down because there's some people in Colorado going like, they're gonna need this. So at all of our campuses, let's do this, let's just stand up together. Don't, again, don't leave early or the Broncos will lose.

So, thus saith the Lord. And again, so here's what I have learned in Bible study is I can read it and just with my mind and my eyes, but something happens, and this, I think this is scientific. If you say it out loud, it like moves from one spot in your brain to another spot in your brain and lands, that's just science, all right? So if you feel comfortable about this, just read them out loud with me, I'll pray, we'll sing a song, and then hopefully you'll come back for next week. But David writes this, here we go, one, two, three. Whom have I in heaven but you? There's nothing on earth that I desire beside you. Here we go, my flesh and my heart may fail, but God is. strength of my heart and my portion forever. Can you imagine everything's failing, your body, you're watching cancer eat away, you're watching this die away, and your response is, nevertheless, God, you're enough for me right now. Can you imagine having that? Let's look at this next one out of the book of Habakkuk. And all these are like harvest terms, so income type terms, it goes like this. Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit beyond the vines, the produce of the olive fail, and the fields yield no food.

The flock be cut off from the fold, and there be no herd in the stalls. Here we go. Yet I will rejoice in the Lord. I will take joy in the God of my salvation. You wanna hold on to that one? Here's a real familiar one, look at this one. Here we go. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Father, we believe, we trust, but a lot of us, we're confused, because you can't put A and B together and have them both make sense. A being what's going on, and the other one just like, God, we need you, and it doesn't feel like you either care. Father, we just need to get to know you more. We need you more in our life. We would love for you to put your Jesus bubble around us so that all the bad stuff and scary stuff never happens in our life again, but you said yourself, and you said this right before they nailed you to a cross, in this world, you will have tribulation, hard times, trials, you just will. Not might, you will. And then you said, but don't give up, take heart. I win.

So I pray for anybody that is in the valley of the shadow of death, divorce, cancer, fear, debt, depression, anxiety. I pray that they'll feel your presence, come alongside, and no matter what, God, we're gonna walk through, I wish there were no more valleys of the shadow of death, but that's just not true. So we're gonna walk through them either way, but from now on, God, will you just come closer and walk through whatever we're facing with us? Because you're our portion, that's what it said. You're enough. When we don't have anything else, we'll hold on to you. You are good, and we love you, and your mercy never fails. In Jesus' name we pray, amen, amen? All right. Amen. Amen. Amen.
