What to Do When You Are Dealing With Delay | Jeff Leake

We wanna welcome you to joining us online and then especially God Behind Bars. Can we just give it up for them today as well? Yeah, and we are in this series called House of Healing and one of the things we did on the first week is we had the people put prayer requests on the miracle wall, if you noticed that on your way in and the guys from God Behind Bars added their prayer requests so we're putting them up on the wall and guys, we just want you to know we're agreeing with you and praying with you during this time as well, yeah. All right, so Melody is here to help me open the message because she took on the responsibility when we went into this vision to see more healing happen to take charge of the hundred people that are praying down the wall, right? Believing that God's gonna move and she's also been collecting stories about how God's answering prayer so she's gonna share a couple of those. Yeah, we have two this morning. So the first one is Emily Demsho. She woke up on December 15th, was unable to feel her legs, was unable to walk, was admitted to Children's Hospital, spent several days there and they diagnosed her with functional neurological disorder due to some traumatic events that she had been through. When she was discharged, she was discharged with a wheelchair. And so over the last several weeks,

she's been receiving prayer at different places like her youth group, her mom's small group and then last Saturday, a prayer partner and I were standing over here and Emily wheeled her mom or Emily's mom wheeled her in and we began to pray for Emily and as we do, we tested. All right, Emily, we prayed for you. Do you wanna see if you can stand? And so her mom got on one side and the other prayer partner on the other side and they tried to stand her up but she couldn't stand. And so we said, let's pray again. So we prayed again and tried again. She wasn't able to stand but I said to her, Emily, sometimes the miracle isn't immediate. Let's just keep believing. I got an email and it said that the next morning, last Sunday, Emily woke up not only feeling her legs but able to walk and she rode the bus to school the next day. Yeah, yeah, beautiful. All right, and so the second one, his name is Oliver. So his mom writes, about a week and a half ago, Oliver had hurt his leg pretty severely. She took him to the ER and the doctor diagnosed him with a Achilles injury and so he suggested ice and heat and so his mom, Kristen, said, we're going to Universal Studios, what can we do? And he said, we'll put ice on it, alternate ice and heat.

And she said, will we be able to walk around? And he said, you're gonna have to get a wheelchair. So she said, she began to do that and after several days, he hadn't improved and this is what she says. In my head, I hesitated to pray for healing because praying for vacation feels like a first world problem. But a few days into the injury, I felt the Holy Spirit tell me, it's not about your vacation, it's about my glory. So she said, she gathered herself and her two sons and they began to pray. And she said, nothing happened at first, but within five minutes, Oliver could put pressure on that foot and within 10 minutes, he could stand and within 20 minutes, he was walking around. When they left the next day, he was able to do Universal Studios, walking all over the place. say that's good stuff right there. Come on, it's so encouraging to hear answers to prayer. And we have been in this series, so here's kind of the journey we've been on. The last night of Revival Week here at the Hampton Campus, I shared a message about how there seemed to be a distinction between the city of Nazareth, where Jesus grew up, and the town of Capernaum, which is on the Sea of Galilee, because where Jesus grew up, there was evidently the lack of an atmosphere of faith because there was no miracles that were done in that space. But Capernaum, you have more miracles that are recorded there than any other spot. And so I sort of proposed this to us. We don't wanna be a Nazareth place, we wanna be a Capernaum church, right? We wanna be a place where there's an atmosphere of faith and we can see the working of God's power in our midst. And then I gave a word at the end, basically, that God was trying to move, but there was a wall kind of in the way. So we've been mobilizing these wall breaker prayer warriors that have been trying to pray down that wall, and thus, we're calling this series in January, The House of Healing. Now, any time you hear stories like the ones we just heard or we bring up the topic of healing, one of the reasons why churches don't go here is because there are some.

that don't get answered, right? Sometimes we want to avoid the topic because it's a sore spot, especially if you've been suffering for a long time with something you've been prayed for multiple times about the same issue. You've got a chronic thing going on in your life and you are in that space where it feels like, I don't know why I haven't, they did, I haven't, what's the deal here? And it's like, bring up the topic, it's like rubbing salt in the wound, like it makes it sting even more. And yet, if we aren't actively praying, we wouldn't have seen these answers to prayer, right? So there's this tension around this particular topic. And what I said at the very beginning of this series is, I can't explain to you the whys and wherefores of why some things happen and other things don't. And I've never heard anyone explain reasonably why things happen the way they do. I've said this multiple times, I'm not God, I know who is, I know he holds answers I don't have, and I have to get comfortable with that reality. So we're not gonna, in this message, look back and explain all the reasons why. But I think there is another question that we need to ask that's much more practical and of value to us. And if you find yourself in this chronic problem situation or you've been prayed for repeatedly,

the question I wanna propose to you today, or maybe you're even asking or should ask, is the question, what now, right? So why asks a question about the past? What now is a proactive question about the future. What's the posture I should take moving forward in my life, all right? So we're gonna try to address that what now question. And this particular message is not just about healing, okay? It's about any delayed answer to prayer. So if I were just to ask, how many of you prayed for something that didn't show up in your life right away? How many of you would say, okay, right. That's just a part of our journey spiritually. So we'll include all of that stuff in this message. And we're gonna say the premise is this, that delay in answer to prayer, delay is not necessarily denial. It's actually an opportunity to grow in faith. And I know that sounds like a spin, doesn't it? Like you're suffering and you haven't gotten the answer. It's just an opportunity. Like look at the opportunity, right? Thank you very much for that, right? So this is not a spin. It actually is, think about it like this. Faith, if you define what faith is, it is a conviction that something is true in spite of your current experience, right? So faith believes something's true

even though I haven't seen it yet. So technically, you can't grow in faith if everything you ask for immediately shows up because then you never have to endure believing something you haven't seen yet. So technically, when we're in a delay moment, that's where faith grows because it's then we stay in the conviction that God has given me a yes to his promises and I'm saying amen and now I'm believing God to release that from heaven to earth. Now last week, we said sometimes there's a clog in the pipeline. There are prayer stoppers that we allow to happen in our soul that we have to deal with that could stop the flow. But that's not the only reason why prayers aren't answered or it hasn't showed up yet. And so what should we do if we're praying and we're getting it all right, right? We're saying amen and there's no prayer stoppers that are present but we haven't seen the result yet. What do I do then? That's the question we want to address. And we want to learn how to grow in faith in the midst of this and so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna give you five action steps that we can do as an answer to the what now question. Practical things we do to move forward in faith and we're gonna look at a number of scriptural passages.

I'll just say this is kind of a teaching message and if you're interested in the material, you can always find the notes on the app. Okay, they're all there for you, okay? So let's pray before we get started. Lord, I pray especially for those who've been suffering for a while. And I pray that this teaching out of your word would help us get a grip inside, a grip on faith and a grip on what to do now and give us a little bit of hope moving forward. So we just ask for your help and we pray your Holy Spirit would teach us as we study your word in Jesus' name and everybody say amen together. All right, very good, let's start with our first text. This is a little section of Mark that describes a healing miracle in Jesus' life. Mark chapter eight and this is what's recorded for us. They came to Bethsaida which was a town around the Sea of Galilee and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him, right? They wanted to see him healed and he took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village where he spit on the man's eyes. He said, I know this is an unusual technique. Jesus uses it several times in the scripture and he put his hands on the man's eyes and he prayed for him and it says, he asked, do you see anything? And here was the result, verse 24.

He looked up and said, I see people but they look like me. look a little fuzzy, like they're just trees. Like, could you adjust the picture on the screen, right? Like, can you deal with the contrast? And it's just a little blurry out there. And so then Jesus prayed again in verse 25. Once more, Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes, and the man's eyes were opened, and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Okay, what's the point of this first passage? If Jesus had to pray twice, the Son of God in the flesh, maybe you might have to pray twice, too. In fact, maybe you might have to pray more than twice, right? So first response when we don't see something is this. We persist, we pray again, right? Mel described this earlier. We prayed for her, we didn't see a result, so we prayed again, right? And she said, remember, this could show up later. So we keep on persisting in prayer, because this is how the Bible talks about prayer. We have a tendency to think that this thing should be real simple. Like, God's all-powerful, he can do anything he wants, and if nothing's happening yet, it's just because it's kinda his fault. Like, he hasn't responded, or he's looked at me, and he sees me as defective, or he's just ignoring my situation. Like, we almost see it as a simple thing.

Like, it should be a real easy thing. But there's a lot of things that are involved in the process of partnering with God to bring answers from heaven to earth. And it's a skill that we have to develop learning how to pray. It's something we have to learn how to do to partner in faith with what God wants to do, because there's a whole lot more involved with it. So prayer is something that Jesus teaches we come back to over and over. Some people have taught, well, if you pray a second time, then you must not have faith. Well, no, no, no. Listen, Jesus, when he taught, he had his disciples with him, and the Bible describes this in Luke chapter 11. The disciples said to Jesus, we watched you pray. You're doing it different. Could you teach us? And so Jesus said, yeah, when you pray, here's what you do. And he gave them a pattern of prayer, which we know is the Lord's Prayer. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Right, he took them through that whole prayer. And then he told a story, Luke chapter 11. Here was the story. He said, there were these two neighbors,

and one of them had friends show up late at night from a long journey, and they had run out of food. They hadn't gone to Giant Eagle that week, and so they didn't have anything in the cupboards, right? And so they needed help. So he went to his neighbor, because he knew his neighbor might be able to help him, and he knocked on the door. And the neighbor said, it's midnight, bro. Go back to bed. Right, and he knocked again. And the neighbor said, we're all sleeping. Leave us alone. And he knocked again. Finally, it says, Jesus said, the neighbor doesn't get up and help him because he's such a kind, generous man, but because he's being a pain. My paraphrase, right? He's just continuing to be persistent. Now, this parable is meant to be ironic, okay? We could interpret it directly and say, and God is like the neighbor who's asleep on you and doesn't wanna answer your prayer, and you gotta bother him to get an answer. No, that's not the point. Jesus was actually saying, if an annoyed neighbor gets up, how much more will your loving Heavenly Father who wants to answer your prayers respond to you? However, you might need to persist

because you gotta pray until the answer arrives. And then, right after that parable, Jesus says this. This might be familiar to you. So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. The knock brings that parable into these statements. And by the way, the words ask, seek, and knock are in the Greek present active words, which means it's a continual word, not a one-time thing. It's like ask, and keep on asking, and seek, and keep on seeking, and knock, and keep on knocking, and it will be opened to you. And the next verse goes on to say, verse 10, for everyone who asks, receives, and the one who seeks, finds. And if you keep on knocking, the door is gonna be opened to you. So Jesus teaches you might have to keep on asking to get the answer. So you're like, what do I do? I prayed, and it hasn't come. Then you ask again, right? I believed, and I haven't seen it. Then you believe again. Yeah, I've said amen to the promises of God, and they haven't showed up yet. You say amen again. You keep on going back, and you knock, you knock, you knock,

believing that God's gonna send a breakthrough on the way. We persist, right? Everybody say pray again. Yeah, that's what we do. We pray again. We go back to God, and we ask again. And you say, well, what's the problem? Like, God, can't we move this along a little bit? I know you probably aren't allowed to say that out loud, but I just did, right? Can we speed this up? Is there a way that, is there like an accelerator to this that makes this go faster? And so there's just so much to it that we don't understand. And let me explain one facet. Isn't it amazing? that God does with the world what he does. I mean, it's a complicated place and people are making ridiculous decisions all around us every day. Somehow in the middle of all that, God finds a way to bring his redeeming grace into the world. But it's not just that. There is a lot of interference spiritually. So again, different Bible passage. I know I'm jumping around a little, so stay with me, this Old Testament. Daniel is praying. He's on a three-week fast. And at the end of his seeking God,

here's what it says, an angel shows up, Gabriel, and says to Daniel, don't be afraid. Since the first day you set your mind to gain understanding and humble yourself before God, your words were heard. Okay, first lesson. You pray, God hears you right away. There's no delay there. And then it says, and I have come in response to them. So Daniel, you prayed on day one, I heard you, and I sent your answer. But what happened then? How come it took three weeks, okay? But then Daniel says this, or Gabriel says this to Daniel. But the prince of Persia, prince of the Persian kingdom, okay, this is angels talking angel stuff. So here we're not talking about the real prince of Persia. We're talking about a principality, right? A spiritual force in the heavenly realms that was trying to destroy the Persian region resisted me, Gabriel, for 21 days. Then Michael, another archangel known as the warrior angel, he came, and he helped me fight my way through the demonic resistance until the answer could be delivered. So why do we have to persist in prayer? Well, sometimes it's because the devil is trying to resist what God wants to accomplish in your life. And you are in the middle of a war

because God has great plans for you, and the devil wants to stop all those good things, and he wants to destroy you. And ultimately, the devil knows if he pushes back hard enough and there's a delay, we might all just quit. We might say, yeah, I guess that's not gonna happen. And then he has won a victory in that because he's got us to stop the pursuit of what God wants to accomplish. So here's the second action step we take. The first one is to persist. The second one is to fight, right? We gotta fight our way through. We gotta stand in faith. We gotta, you know, to rebuke the demonic activity and bind up the devil's work and see the power of God released so that we can fight our way through to a place of healing and victory in Jesus' name. Now, this is a really important point. I have found this one right here, what I'm gonna tell you next, has given me great freedom when I'm suffering or I have somebody in my life that's suffering for a long time. Because when something's going wrong in my life, I want to know who to blame. I don't know if, is anybody like me that way? Whose fault is this?

And we see it's kind of a universal thing because Jesus and his disciples met a blind man who had been born blind. And their first question in John chapter nine is to ask this, okay, who's at fault? Verse, put this verse on the screen, John 9, two. Who sinned, this man or his parents? So is it an ancestral problem, right? Is this a generational curse that's on our family? Is it the man, how could he sin? They probably were wondering, he was in the mother's womb, what could he have done to deserve this? The unspoken, implied question in this statement is, is it the father's fault? Did he just decide this? Did God just decide to make this man blind? They didn't say that one out loud, but that has to be as a part of the recipe here. And Jesus responds to this answer, or question that the disciples ask with this answer. Neither this man nor his parents sinned, he said. In fact, let's not even look back and ask why. Then he points forward. This happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. It really doesn't matter what the reason was because God's getting ready to do something in his life. You see the forward-looking posture of Jesus, and then Jesus tells us who he blames.

Verse four, as long as it's day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming when no one can work. While I'm in the world, I'm the light of the world. Now, Jesus isn't talking about physical light and darkness. He's not saying God only answers during the daytime after 6 p.m., like there's no, no, no, he's saying, listen, it's the spirit of darkness, right? There's darkness on this world, and I've showed up as the light in the world to push the darkness back. And so here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna see the work of God displayed in his life as we push back the powers of darkness and we see healing brought into this man's eyes, which eventually he does bring healing to him. So here's what I've decided. If there is something in my life that I don't understand, or there's somebody in my life that's suffering. through, I'm not gonna blame God, I'm not gonna blame my ancestors, I'm not gonna blame myself, I'm gonna blame the devil. If I'm gonna be mad at anybody, I'm gonna be mad at him, and I'm gonna go after him in Jesus' name. Now, that's not just by seeing an answer to prayer. It's by aligning with Jesus, the light of the world. It's by worshiping in the midst of the things I don't understand. It's when I serve people that need help.

It's when I pray for others. It's when I give. It's when I show up in an encouraging way. Like, I become part of the light that pushes back the darkness, and then I let God worry about the answer that I need, but what I'm gonna do, look, so if the devil's coming at me, I'm gonna punch him in the face. Come on, somebody, right? Like, I'm not just gonna take it, oh, I just will. No, I'm gonna stand up in Jesus' name, and I'm gonna say, you will be sorry for the day you came to my family, because I'm gonna win as many people to Jesus as I can. Right, like, let's get mad in the right place. So we gotta fight our way through in Jesus' name. Okay, well, number one, persist. Pray again. Number two, fight. Let me tell you number three. Number three is you gotta watch. What does this mean? You gotta listen to yourself talk, and you gotta watch your posture. So it's possible. God, remember, this is the principle the last couple weeks. In Christ, all the promises of God are yes. We are on the other side. We say, amen, may it be in my life.

Sometimes what happens is we come into agreement with the may it be in my life for the moment we're praying with somebody, and then we walk away, and we hear the whispers of the enemy say, this will never happen for you. Things like this never happen for you. They happen for somebody else. They're not gonna happen for you. I'm not even sure God knows your name or what's going on in your life, and before you know it, you have come into agreement with something other than the promises of God. Instead of walking in faith, you're walking in your feelings. Instead of being in agreement in faith, you're now coming into agreement with fear or shame or doubt, and if you bounce back and forth, it's not that God is unable to do something. It's just that if you're really needing a breakthrough, you wanna stay in this posture of yes and amen, yes and amen, and the devil's trying to constantly bring you into a place where you're agreeing with something else. Let me give you another scriptural example. Paul talking to his spiritual son Timothy, and he says this to him in 2 Timothy 1. For this reason, I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. So let's just put in our vernacular here. You came forward, someone laid their hands on you,

prayed, you agreed in faith together, and so Paul says when you walk away from that, that flame of faith inside of you can go out. So you gotta, you know, fan the flame so that whatever was sparked inside would grow into a fire, right? If you let it die out, then all of a sudden, you might be agreeing with something other than God's word, and verse seven, then this is the famous verse, the spirit of God that God gave us doesn't make us timid, or you may have memorized it if you have memorized this. And God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind, or self-discipline. So we say, God, I'm not coming into agreement with fear, or with doubt, or with shame or condemnation. I'm standing in faith because I wanna watch, make sure my words sound more like God than something the devil would be whispering to me. So we keep our posture focused, right? So we persist, we pray again. We fight, right? Push back the darkness. We watched, make sure we're in agreement in faith. Here's number four. We invest, we invest. Okay, let me talk about something important now. Do you know that praying for healing and getting good medical advice are not in competition with each other?

Some have taught, if you go to the doctor, that shows that you don't believe. No, doctors want you well. God wants you whole. They're on the same team. They're not fighting against each other. They're actually working together. And it's, aren't you thankful for good medical advice, and input, and treatment? Well, we're all living longer now because of the scientific discoveries and application of such today. And even in Paul's day, this is another thing he said to Timothy, his spiritual son. He said, stop drinking only water and use a little wine because of your stomach. Let's put in our, he said, hey, take some Pepto-Bismol. All right, come on, you need Alka-Seltzer. Your stomach's bad, right? Is that anti-faith? Evidently not, right? So good medical advice, trying to get good health care, and praying in faith on the same side, not opposed. to each other. In fact, sometimes we're in a situation that we're in because we're ignoring that advice. Let me testify. I've already told you, this year I moved from pre-diabetes to diabetic condition. I went to see the doctor and he was very honest with me. He said, this is not just an age factor, this is user error. He said it just like that. He said, you are eating bad and you can reverse this condition if you just change your habits. Now, it would have been a little hypocritical for me to ask for supernatural healing for something that I could change just by doing the right thing.

So, I had to eat better and I'm doing better, right? I'm still praying that God touches my body. But yeah, thank you for that. I appreciate it. Okay, let me tell you another story. Diane was in her 60s, came to the ministry school a couple of years ago. When she showed up, she was not in good physical condition. She was on some oxygen. She had COPD. She could not walk up the steps. I was thinking, how is she ever going to make it through this year? Because she's got to be here every day, four days a week. And then the end of the year, we go on a missions trip to the continent of Africa. How is that going to happen? So, we started praying for her on a regular basis that God would touch Diane's body. But here's the deal. She then decided to do some things herself. Like she was smoking, lung condition, but she was still smoking. She was like, pray that I quit these cigarettes. So, she quit and then she didn't. Then she quit and then she didn't. You know how it works. And then eventually, she quit for good and we're praying and she's doing good physical things and we're praying. And she got stronger throughout the year. She's bounding up the steps now and she's in class. She was unrecognizable by the end of the year. She went on that missions trip. How about that? Honestly, in my natural self, there's no way that's happening. But look at what God can do when we invest and pray in what God's trying to do in our life. Okay, here's the final one then, number five, is we wait. Yes, of course, I'm waiting. I'm in a delay moment. I know. This is not just waiting like I'm sitting on the couch waiting for God to drop something on me. This is an active kind of waiting. Like I'm waiting and preparing myself and leaning in. You know, here's, I forgot to mention this. When you blame God for your situation and you are not seeing a result and you push him away and some people do like, until I see a reason why or an answer, you and I, God, aren't going to be close. You know what you're actually doing? You're suffering and alone now. Like you're suffering and empty. God wants to send his resources into your soul to sustain you in the midst of it. If you stiff arm God away, you miss the grace he wants to send into your life while you're waiting for the answer. And let me give you another Jesus verse. The last verse I'll read to you today, same chapter as Luke 11, where we talked about ask and keep on asking. He says, which of you fathers, if your son asked for a fish, will give him a snake instead? You know, he's talking about the heart of your father's good toward you. If he asked for an egg, will he give him a scorpion? No, of course not. If you then, though you're evil, we're all imperfect parents, right? Know how to give good gifts to your kids. How much more will your father in

heaven, notice this, give you the Holy Spirit if you ask? While you wait, this should be your question to God, your prayer request. God, I just want more of your presence right now. I want the answer to prayer, but God, right now, I want to be as close to you as I can. Would you fill my life with your presence? Because I need your sustaining presence in my life. And the father would delight to give you that as you're on this journey towards the breakthrough that you need. All right, we're going to close in prayer in a moment. We're going to have our prayer teams come, but why don't we stand to our feet as we end this message, and we're going to sing together a song. Okay, so we have chosen as a church to live in a very uncomfortable space. Let me describe. We are believing God for demonstrable, visible healing miracles, at the same time knowing that there will be many people who haven't experienced healing yet. And so it's uncomfortable. 20 answers to prayer, and a whole slew of them haven't been answered yet. It's way more comfortable for a church to say, let's not even go there, because if we go there, it's going to sort of stir up a lot of pain, because people have been waiting and haven't received an answer. But you know, if we weren't here, and we hadn't been praying, there's 20 answers at the very least that wouldn't have happened, and we're only in the middle of the month. Right? Next weekend, we have our evangelist guest, Johannes Amritsar, who's gonna be with us. We're believing next week's gonna be a powerful weekend. If we didn't enter the uncomfortable space of not being able to explain everything, we would miss out on the potential of what God wants to do in our midst, right? Wayne Gretzky, I think, said, you miss 100% of the shots you never take. So the same, 100% of the prayers you never pray won't be answered, right? So hey, let's get uncomfortable. Let's get into that space. Let's stand in faith.

We don't have to explain everything, but let's keep aiming our hearts toward God. Can we just turn our face toward heaven, especially those of you who've been suffering through some things. Let's just offer ourselves to him now. God, we need you. We need your presence. We need your spirit. You said you'd give the Holy Spirit to those who ask. That's what we ask for right now. First of all, we pray that you just flood this place with your presence and with your anointing. In Jesus' name, we're gonna sing this song. Joss is gonna lead us in. I trust in God. We're gonna be available to pray for people today. So all of the leaders that are here, if you wanna make your way to the front. We also have a baptism after the service, guys.

So if you signed up to be baptized or would like to take that step, you head out into the concourse. Some will be there to meet you to help you get ready for that amazing moment. We're gonna sing the part, I sought the Lord and He heard me. Let's sing that part together.
