The Night it Broke | Crossroads Daily
This is the night everything unravels—betrayal, denial, fear. The people closest to Jesus fall apart… and honestly, it’s uncomfortably relatable.
Welcome everyone, we're here talking about Luke 22. My name's Josh. I'm Mish. I'm Kirsten. And I'm Deepo. So Luke 22 is a hard one. We sort of see, my perception is we sort of see everything kind of falling apart. What if anything stuck out to you guys? This is like my favorite chapter in scripture. Luke 22? Ever. Oh wow. Yes. For a lot of reasons. I just see myself a lot in these stories. So much happens. Yes. In such a small amount of time. But like, I don't know. Jesus praying in the garden, or no, Mount Olives, where is it at? The garden. The garden. Yeah, the garden. Asking God to like take away the situation. Always comes back. I talk about it all the time because I just nerd out about it. Of how God doesn't, we don't hear that God answers him no, but he's strengthened by angels. And I just like, I am always like, oh my gosh, if Jesus had to pray for that and like had I see it. I mean, Jesus, I don't think would be defined as weak, but a moment of weakness to where
he had to be strengthened by his father and by angels. I'm just like, that's me. Yeah. I don't know. It's one of my favorites. Yeah. It shows a part of his humanity and I think like, think about how that didn't need to be in there. Yes. But it was like so intentional that he did feel that way and he prayed that prayer. Yeah. I love that. I love that part. Any emotion in general that Jesus shows doesn't need to be in there, it feels like, but it is for that reason. Well, it makes him easily relatable. Like he's not, he is, he is God and man, which we could blow up the world right now trying to figure that out. But it is, it is the one way we can identify with him. His humanity makes us go, okay, I get it. Yeah. I get it. So here's, so here's a question. There's a lot of, in Matthew 22, there's a lot of his close people turning their backs on him. So we have Judas who betrayed him and Jesus, and Peter who denied him. So a question from, I asked myself is how am I denying Jesus today? What have I done to deny Jesus? So that's the question I posed to us. How are we denying Jesus?
I think of denying Jesus in times I've also hurt my witness to Jesus, my testimony who, how Jesus has affected me and changed my life. I'm involved in theater and theater related things. And if you know anything about the theater, not everybody in the theater follows Jesus. And I would say a lot of people in the theater are very anti-Jesus or at least anti-Christians, especially American Christians. And so there's been times where I have not outwardly said, I don't believe in Jesus and I don't think he's real or I don't like him or stuff like that, but I've kind of strayed away from him or at least not admitted to my following, not admitted to the moralism in which I feel like Jesus has compelled my heart to be about and follow all for the sake of not wanting to hurt my reputation. And even, I think justified that in like, I don't want to eventually lose my ability or credibility with some people to minister to them eventually, but I think in doing so I've actually denied Jesus. See I don't think I struggle with, I am who I am wherever I go. It's a beautiful gift the Lord has put into me. So I am who I am. So I guess what this makes me ask the question, okay, if I'm not denying him, are there things about him or his kingdom that I'm denying, that I'm turning my back on? If not him outright, then what? And again, for me, this is like, this is the big thing. It's how I love other Christians. Like that is the thing the Lord has been trying to mature in me for so long. And I think, I feel like I make baby steps, but it is so easy, it is so easy for me to look at a headline, to read a story, to watch, I'm going to hell for this. for watching these reels, these TikTok reels where I... Oh, you doomscroll. I have lately. I need to get rid of it. I doomscroll a lot.
Just send me a couple memes before you go. I don't know what you're watching. But like watching it and go like, oh, you terrible Christian. And Jesus is like, yeah, you don't get that option. You don't have to love what people do, but you don't get to reject my children because you're so much better than them. That's the thing for me. Like at the end of the day, I might be just a slightly better Christian than someone I deem as not. And Jesus is like, you're not. You're not better. You're not better. So I think I deny Jesus when I deny or reject the church. I really struggle with the tension of biblical truth and what Jesus is doing today now through the Holy Spirit. And what I mean by that is you read the Old Testament and you're like, this is a bunch of crazy baloney that I don't think is necessarily what God wants me to know right now in today's world. That was great for them 4,000 years ago or whatever. And instead of like seeing it as the big picture, I think that's where I deny Jesus is as I look at scripture and I'm like, oh, that has nothing to do with me anymore. Like I got the Holy Spirit. I just need to pray more. I need to pray more and listen more. And that's what gets me in those dips of like
no quiet times, no reading, like no leaning on scripture as my truth instead of just being like, oh, I'm feeling this today with Jesus. It's like, well, he kind of uses all of it. Like there's a reason that Jesus quoted and encompassed scripture and the prophecies with the gift of the Holy Spirit and with the work. Like it's a whole package. It's not just like this discipline plus this discipline minus this discipline equals this. So I need to get better at that. Yeah, he doesn't really leave us the option of disregarding the Old Testament. No, it all works together. There's some crazy stuff in there. No, it is really good. And I've actually been getting a lot of like revelation through, I'm saying this because this is my week that I'm in right now. I have not been reading my Bible and I'm like, do I really need it? He's like, yes, you really need it. But like he's been opening my eyes to the crazy chat that's out in there. Like, this is why that was there. And I'm like, oh, that's good. Yeah, I think for me, similar to you, Josh, like there's, I think when we deny Jesus or his attributes, or I guess I'll say this again,
when we deny attributes of Jesus, we're denying him. And I think for me, a way that I deny Jesus, I think in my daily life is showing grace and forgiveness. What's so interesting about these chapters that we're reading, it's all leading him to the cross, which is like the biggest act of grace and forgiveness that he shows us. And while I, at the same time, struggle so hard with forgiving people and showing grace, like I have a hard time giving grace to my husband and forgiveness to my husband if he's done something wrong with my friends, like I really, really struggle with it. And the times that I choose not to, or I choose to harbor anger or bitterness, I am realizing that's like me denying Jesus and denying who he is. Like that's who he is. So that's an area where I really, really struggle. It's really good. It's real. It just hit me, like, as soon as you say that, like, I want, now I just want to start every day going, Jesus, how have I denied you? Like opening myself up to that and being like, geez, here it comes. Like, what a great way, or maybe it's end my day. How have I denied you? Who have I not loved? Or how have I acted better than someone? Great, I'm gonna pray for that for us right now.
Jesus, we just, we bless you for this chapter and even the conviction that we are people who deny you. And whether we deny you as our savior or we deny these attributes of you, or we just... We live like people who read about you instead of people who are submitted to you. Like, we just invite you to show us how we denied you. Even today, like even just sitting right here, like. Show us how we deny you, Lord. And then help us to be quick to repent for it. And your grace is good. Amen. So for you, if watching this, what I just wanna say to you is the beauty of Jesus, the beauty of the gospel is if when you deny him, he is so, the whole point of Luke 22 is like in the midst of being denied, he's going to the cross for the people who are denying him. So what I just say to you is, Jesus's grace is sufficient for you. And he's just calling you to something better. Jesus is always inviting you. He's not standing in the corner with his arms crossed going, I wish you'd do better. He's extending his hand to you as an invitation. So I just bless you with that. See ya.
