So Now What | Crossroads Daily
Jesus is suffering, dying, and people are still misunderstanding Him, mocking Him, or walking away. But in the middle of it, there’s this raw moment of grace for someone who has nothing left to offer.
Welcome. Hi, we're talking about Luke 23 today. My name is Josh. I'm Mish. I'm Kirsten and I'm Depot. And we were just talking about boogers and noses, which I don't think any of us have. Oh, I for sure got one. I feel it. It's fine though. More about the crux of our faith. The crux of our faith is not boogers. All right. So Luke 23, this is leading. To what will ultimately be the resurrection. But Jesus has to walk through really terrible stuff. And it seems like in the midst of this suffering, he's extending all of this grace, all of this grace. What does that mean? What does that sort of extension of grace mean to you? Which is, which is crazy. It is. I can't, I can't imagine trying to put myself like, what is the equivalent of something like that in my life? Like a great betrayal of some kind or like someone cutting me off in traffic. Like, I can't imagine Jesus going through this and in the midst of it, extending all this grace. I would fail. I would fail the test. Whatever the test is, I would fail it. Yeah. The only thing I think of is how often I do good things and my brain immediately goes to like, this will protect me or this will do good things for me, or this will come back to me. Like, what do I get? I get, I get. And so for Jesus just to stand as an innocent man and even be told like, he's innocent. Pilate is like fighting for this man. He's like, even the guy that like his job at that, I don't know if he loved it, is to literally put people to death is like, what are you guys doing? And for Jesus just to be like, this is what I'm choosing. I'm choosing this is crazy. Cause it's just all of the things that are about me, me, me, me, me, even that make me innocent. If I were to be told, oh, you have to go on death row right now, just because of like who you are and your faith and how you want to save these people. It's like, um, I would be immediately like, nevermind. Really? It's okay. I, it's not that serious. So what does that, what does that kind of grace mean for us as people who say we're falling? What does that mean tangibly? Like, what does that mean? I like, I think like it's simple. Like, okay. I get mad in traffic. I justify my rage and my anger constantly. I constantly, you did this, you did that. Jesus does not give room for that for us. Like if we're just going by this example, that doesn't exist. It's grace. It is grace. It is grace. It is. If you hit me, I'm going to let you hit me. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think of it as like, like grace oftentimes costs us, like it costs us. And I think about Jesus on the cross, like it costs him something. And like you said, the choice of like grace, like choosing to, you know, show grace to somebody or something like that's going to be at a cost to yourself.
Like that's such a hard, a hard thing to think about. I wonder if it costs us everything. Because when you were reading the scripture earlier, the thing that was kind of my mind was the scripture, those who lose their life, find it. And Jesus is going into a place where he knows he's about to lose his life. And Jesus knows his purpose. He's very, very, very like affirmed in his purpose. And so I wonder if like, that's it, like, it's like, it's not just a cost to, it's cost to like everything of us is sacrificed when we show grace. Yeah. And even Jesus on the cross, being able to say, unironically forgive them for they know not what they do. And not like, not an empty forgiveness. Like I think about all the times, I think about empty forgiveness all the time. It's like the forgiveness where I do it because I'm supposed to, but there's like, nothing has changed in me. Right. Yeah. The Bible says you should forgive, so I'm going to forgive. But there's nothing that changes. I think grace for us is expensive. Like us, us giving grace has to cost us something, just like it cost Jesus something. It can't be, it can't be. So with that in mind, someone cuts you off in traffic. Yeah. And you want to show anger and you don't, what's that costing you? I think it, I think it's about my pride. Like when I think about traffic stuff and I, guys. Do you have road rage? The real, real, this is the real, real. I am a. Closet serial killer Context I just wrote yeah, I'm not probably piss you off so much on the road. So here's We don't have Dexter but in real life here. Okay, this is like I can justify Doing something terrible to you because you come out, but that's that but we're joking. We're joking, but that's it's really about in that moment What I think is my this is what I'm owed. Yeah, I I'm an American things should be just like this. Yeah, and Being a Christ follower says no Your allegiance is to me. Mm-hmm. Someone cuts you off. You let him cut you off again, which is crazy Because I just want to run you off the road And so it's in this is legitimate for me like it is an act of will when something that happens and like if I It happens every time I I either In in my heart say something terrible or out loud and like five minutes later. I'm like, oh gosh. I Fail it constantly
What's it for you? What is it? What is your what is your road rage my road rule road rage for one? You gotta pick something different Where do we where do we where we required to extend grace that we're not I Don't know why I didn't want to say this but because it's an easy one to say but I'll say because it's the most important one Grace with my wife. There's this like level of expectation That I have on her that I think is actually like a moving target and maybe even sometimes impossible to me for for her Yes What was I just Yeah, I mean like I think there's first of all, there's a level of like the expectation that I know I need to is Is unreasonable But I think there also is a grace there that maybe that she's not meeting certain Standards of mine or whatever that does require grace of me Every single day if not every minute because we're you know, we're married we live together And the beautiful part about that is the few but the times I have been able to extend it man, just like a Closeness with her and a deeper love with her just like continuing to grow The cross the cross is the greatest mirror for marriage Everything Jesus did on the cross is what you're supposed to do for your wife. Yeah Yeah, and what I love about that and with that She's did it without expectation by them by the way because because we're the church is the bride So literally like the groom you're supposed to die for her without requirement without you better do something good for me yeah, I was just thinking about I've really struggled with grace and showing forgiveness and I Think about the relationships that I have my husband my friends and I myself I require Like I I need to let the person know all the wrong that they've done before I can show forgiveness So I think in the area of grace like for me to feel Rectified I need to like have a whole rant and then I can show you forgiveness if you're sorry I'll show you forgiveness and I think the area that I reach struggle with is just Giving grace, even if I don't have that conversation
even if they don't say I'm sorry, like yeah, I So I think when I think about Jesus and him being on the cross He showed grace before Any of us had the chance to make that decision right any of us had you know like he had all of us on his mind and he his first decision was love and grace before anything else and I'm like I Need all these things to happen first, right and then grace can happen. And so I yeah I this is one of the biggest areas that I struggle with Because I think I need all of these things to line up first and then I'll show you grace, right? Talk it's conditional. It's yeah, it's conditional. Yeah When you first asked this question, this is my pride and arrogance of just like I was like, wow I'm so good at grace. Nothing pisses me off. Like I like a lot of things like I make a big deal like they anchor me but in reality like I'm like Whatever. I have a memory that I just forget about it But what's crazy is then I remembered that the most angry? That I've had the past week has been with my three-year-old and one-and-a-half-year-old Like and they have no control for their little emotions and things but watching them flail in Fish flop on the ground over me making them wash their hands after we played at a dirty park for three hours Literally last night. I'm like, we're about to eat dinner You will wash your hands on the ground screaming and I'm like, I I refuse to have grace with this child like Pick him up shove him in the sink like and he's like real tears like in his little brain and body He is like feeling this so deeply And I'm like, why would I give grace this? This is such a ridiculous thing. Yeah Experience. It's so unrealistic, but it's so funny because I'm sitting here like aren't we just little babies and toddlers to God? Jesus like I once heard a pastor say like we are like Jesus or God We are wanting God to hand us the keys But in his mind, we're like little newborns and we're expect we can't even walk into the car to drive it yet We think we should have all the responsibility to drive the car and that's like what I just was like, oh gosh Thank you Jesus because I am a big yeah, baby
So I have a challenge for us. Mm-hmm So the beauty of what you just said is in the midst of us not giving grace Jesus is bestowing grace on our inability to give it which Mind-blowing let let that that's yeah, that's some inception stuff so I think a challenge for us is and for you watching like Think of an area right now where you need to Once meet one just once this week At a cost to yourself give grace, yeah, which means maybe for you it's like oh The record of wrongs I have kept I got I got to do something with it like whatever it is Find a place mine's gonna be road rage. I guarantee it. I'm Garrett like yes Hurts my heart thinking about it Yes, so that's our challenge that's your challenge find one thing One place this week and give grace when you might even Rightfully be able to withhold grace. Where can you take the low place?
