Come on, let's give Jesus the highest praise. We trust you, Lord. We love you, Lord. God, I'm asking right now in the name of Jesus that that song would be the declaration of our hearts today. God, we trust you. In every circumstance, we trust you. In every situation, we trust you because you're faithful and you're good. Lord, we declare like the psalmist. He said, I was young and now I'm old, but I've never seen the righteous forsaken. God, I've never seen your children begging for bread. And so in the midst of struggle and in the midst of hardship, God, we're putting our eyes on you, believing that you have what we need, believing that you're more than enough for us. God, there's no circumstance that you can't come through today. There's no miracle that you can't work in our lives. And so God, I'm asking in this service that you would calm people's hearts. Make sure that you're praying and inviting all week long. I said recently we just had Lifetrack, had a whole family to join because a seven-year-old handed them an invite card at Sam's Wholesale, amen? And so if God can use a seven-year-old and an invite card, he can use you and your invite this week to get people here for the revival next Sunday. Just the very attendance, you can see there's a move of God, and I don't want you to miss what's gonna happen next Sunday, and I want you to be a part of it. In fact, we have 21 days of prayer in January and August. And this year, we've decided that we'll take the first Monday of the month to fast and pray, which means tomorrow is the first Monday of the month. And what better time than to fast and pray for the revival next Sunday? And you know, our young people, our high school students yesterday met for fasting and prayer. And if our young people, our high school,
come on, give it up for the high school students. If they can do that, then I want you adults to set aside some time tomorrow to fast and pray for the revival, and I want us right now just to have prayer, praying for this message, praying for this service, but praying about all that's going on in the world, and praying about revival next week, so let's unite together in prayer. Heavenly Father, I thank you for the time of worship that we have enjoyed today. I pray we'll never take that freedom for granted. I pray, thanking you, that we do see you at work. And Lord, you are answering prayers, and you are changing lives, and we believe that there's more that you want to do, and so we pray, we pray for the revival next Sunday. We pray that you would use us. Lord, send revival to us personally as we fast and pray tomorrow. I pray, Lord, that even today at the invitation that we'll see lives changed. And Lord, today I know that all of us have on our mind, and some families have a heavy heart because they have a loved one who is overseas and carrying out missions, and Lord, we just, we want to pray for them today. We thank you for the brave men and women of our military. And Lord, I know that everyone carrying out a mission, that's someone's son, someone's husband, someone's father, it's someone's daughter,
someone's wife, someone's mother, and so I pray that you would watch over them, protect them, bring them back to their family safely, and I pray right now for their families back at home that, Lord, you give them a supernatural peace that passes all understanding. God, we're praying right now for the people of Iran. I pray, Lord, that they would find a new freedom like they have never seen before. I pray, Lord, for the government that will be coming to be. Lord, ultimately, promotion comes not from the east or the west or the south. Lord, you take down one, you exalt another, so we're praying that your will would be done and that you'll bring into power a government that will give them freedom, that, Lord, that, Lord, they would see something take place there like we've never seen. I pray even for this lifetime, this gospel going forth to the ends of the earth, that, Lord, we would see a gospel just spread across the Middle East. I pray that we would see the gospel of Jesus Christ setting people free. And, Lord, we're just praying for our missionaries. We pray for our military families. We pray for our leaders. We pray for wisdom.
And we pray for our own nation, our state, the Hampton Roads area, and we pray for revival right now in our own hearts and lives. In this service, we ask it in Jesus' name. And everybody say it. Amen. Amen. Well, we're in a series called Living with Joy. Take your Bibles and turn with me to Philippians 3. We're just going verse by verse through the book of Philippians. And last week, we stopped at verse 11, so we're picking up today at verse 12. And I wanna talk to you from this passage about pressing on, pressing on. You know, you look back at verse 11 where we left off. First of all, in every chapter in Philippians, it talks about joy. And we also see here in verse 11 where we left off that Paul makes this statement, assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead. I don't wanna leave you with the impression that he was just hoping, maybe, somehow, some way, I'm gonna have a resurrected body one day. No, when you study the Bible, that's what I love about verse by verse. You have to study it in context. Now, what did he say last week before he made that statement?
He said, I wanna know him and the power of his resurrection. So this resurrection that he's hoping to attain. to is not something in the future, it's right now, every day, resurrection power lives in us. If Jesus lives in you, resurrection power lives in you. God wants you to have victory today. And Paul's telling us how that happens. He said, everything that I've gained I counted as loss. And so he's teaching us a principle that I want you to make sure you get and you understand. Are you awake? Say amen. In order to gain, you have to lose. In order to live, you have to die. In order to receive, you have to give. And in order to be first, you have to be last. And he said, ultimately, that's where we find joy in this life. That's how we win by losing. So ultimately, when he says here, I'm hoping to attain to this resurrection, he is saying, I want to trade everything I can do for what God can do. And I'm telling you, that's a swap you want to make. Amen? Press on. Press on now, he's going to say. Number one, press on with progress. Let's pick up in verse 12. Not that I have already obtained all this or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on. I called it press on because he's going to say it two times in these few verses. He's going to say, press on. Everybody say, press on. He said, I press on with progress. Listen, Paul is making it clear here. He's not perfect. He has not arrived, and neither have you. I haven't arrived. You haven't arrived. None of us have arrived. And I want you to write this down. The goal in this life is not perfection. It's progress. Paul is saying, I'm not everything I ought to be, but praise God, I'm not what I used to be. And that's my testimony today. And I hope that's your testimony today. All of us ought to have a sign that says, be patient with me. God's not through with me yet. And so the goal is not perfection. The goal is progress. I want you to apply that to your marriage. You're not going to have a perfect marriage, but you make progress. I want you to apply that to your home, to your work, to all relationships. Apply it to the church. There's no perfect church. You're not going to have a perfect job, perfect family, perfect marriage. No, but we can all make progress. We can all get better. They ought to be inside of us a holy
discontentment that I'm not satisfied with where I'm at. I believe God's got more, amen, that God's got more than he wants to do in my life. You've heard me say it many times. You can make excuses or you can make progress, but you can't do both. And so every day you got to wake up saying, Lord, there's more than I believe you have for me. We haven't learned everything about everything. None of us have arrived, and anybody who thinks they've arrived, you have. You've gone as far as you're ever gonna go, but as long as you've got a hunger inside of you and you humble yourself before God, God has more that he wants to do in your life. Paul is the greatest Christian we know anything about, and yet we see here he is flexible, he is teachable, never stopped growing, never stopped learning. Caleb at 85 said, give me this mountain. Did you know that Colonel Sanders didn't find chicken finger-looking good until he was 70? 70. Ray Kroc introduced the Big Mac at age 70. Thomas Edison invented the memograph machine at 85. And I know a lot of y'all saying, what's a memograph machine? Let me tell you what it is. It was a duplicator, and it smelled real good. You know, you got your fingers really messed up, and the smell, they give you a high while you're copying stuff, you know? But it was a copier before we had copiers and printers, and now we got 3D printers and 4D printers. Progress, everybody say progress. There's so much more to be accomplished. Success is not determined, listen, success is not determined by what we are, but by what we are compared to what we could be. It is not measured by what we've done, but by what we've done compared to what we could have done. Progress, press on with progress. Number two, press on with purpose. Everybody say purpose. Verse 12 says, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. One reason that people have no joy is they have no purpose. One reason people have no joy in life is because they have no direction in their life. They're just drifting, just existing. Now I don't want you to read over this and miss it Christ Jesus took hold of me. You know what Paul's saying He is saying I didn't find God he found me That was Paul's story on the Damascus Road. He wasn't looking for God. He was looking for Christians to arrest and persecute But God took hold of him on the Damascus Road, and I'm telling you that is true of all of our stories ultimately
We don't find God God finds us God's not the one lost I'm saying to you that the encouraging side of that is this You don't have to hold on to Jesus It's not just oh if I could just hold on if I could just hold on Somehow make it to heaven one day and they shut the pearly gates and then I'll be alright No, you're not holding on to Jesus. He's holding on to you. Oh, let that sink in today He took hold of us now We need to press on to take hold of the reason for which he took hold of us. And so we're talking here About purpose everybody say purpose. Why did God take hold of you? Why did he put you here on this earth? I love this God doesn't only call people out of the workplace. He calls people into the workplace If you could ever understand that God has placed you where you are Then nothing happens by chance You know your business your leadership your skills your influence. They're not Secondary to God's purpose. They're the very tools that God uses to accomplish his purposes Recently, I got an email From a legacy team member and I it just blessed my heart every every week I send out just an encouraging email to the legacy team and just like we've got a praise team and Hospitality team and children's team. Listen, there are people that they know that God's blessed them with the gift of giving They not only tithe, but they give above the tithe They self-identify and and so I just try to encourage them in their ministry. And here's what they said They said I've really struggled Can God use me? But then I read a book and the book was called God owns my business and they said although I'm not in Full-time vocational ministry. I have a ministry Thank you for reminding me of that in this week's devotion I pray God will use my business for his glory to see many come to know Christ and it the greatest day is when you figure out why God put you where you are and That he he puts in our hands That which is needed to accomplish his eternal purposes
And that God wants to use you right where you are It's a freeing day when you realize what you're gifted to do. Listen and what you're not gifted to do Let others Do what they're gifted to do you do what you're called to do and together everybody say together We're a team and together we accomplish our purpose Press on with purpose number three press on with priority I'm at verse 13 brothers and sisters. I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it, but One thing I do circle that in your Bible one thing I do forgetting what is behind and Straining toward what is ahead then sports. We call this being in the zone and an athlete will get in the zone and it is a focus it is a Concentration where the crowd noise doesn't affect them They can't even hear the crowd noise. They're so in the zone They're not distracted by everybody else around them. And I'm telling you that's the kind of focus that we need This one thing I do if you try to be everything to everyone you'll end up being nothing to no one Did you know multitasking is a term that applies to computers and not people Someone said Multitasking is merely the opportunity to screw up more than one thing at a time. That's the truth That is the truth Sure, you can walk and talk sure you could chew gum and drive Sure, you can fold laundry and watch television, but you can't focus Focus on two things at once what happens when people text and drive Listen 95% of people never write down their goals 95% but the 5% who do Of the 5% who do 95% of them accomplish them 95% of people never write down their goals, but of the 5% who do, 95% reach their goal. Write it down. Keep it in front of you all the time.
This month, in March, we're going to begin to share where we believe God is taking us in the future as a church. Listen, you can live by faith and set goals at the same time. You know what the key is? I learned this from Charles Stanley. Charles Stanley said, you can walk by faith and set goals at the same time as long as those goals are of God. That's it. As long as those goals are of God. And so I can honestly tell you that the plans that we're going to be presenting to you have come through much prayer. And we believe that they are not just our goals, but goals from God. He says here, one thing I do, when Ms. Tammy was a school teacher, she had at the front of her class in big letters, just do right. Every day you're going to do something, just do right. And I tell you, it's a reminder that every day, the one thing that we must do is do right. A double-minded person is unstable in all their ways. Listen, you can look at the past, learn from the past, but you can't live in the past. Give your past to Jesus. He said, forget those things which are behind. You know, there are two things that you've got to forget. Are you awake? Say amen. Amen. All of your sins and all of your successes. Let's talk about all of your sins. Forget your sins. Now, we should never minimize or excuse sin, but I want you to know the power of the cross. The cross is where Jesus purchased our pardon. That's where he paid the debt for every wrong you've ever committed and every wrong that's
been committed against you. Jesus paid it all. It's been paid in full. We live under a new verdict that says not guilty. Can I have an amen? You look in the Bible at Abraham, Jacob, Judah, David, Peter, Paul, John, Mark, all of them failed miserably. And if they had focused on their sin, they'd have never accomplished anything for God. And yet, they had to get to the place that you forget those things which are behind. Now, here it is. It's not that you're going to forget. As long as you have a mind that's still working, all right, if you're healthy physically, your mind is going to remember. So it's not that you're going to forget it, but it's that you're not going to be controlled by your past. Don't be controlled by your past. Are you getting anything out of this sermon? The devil's the accuser of the brethren. And he comes to us and he brings up all the things you've done wrong. Let me tell you the difference between conviction, the Holy Spirit bringing up what's wrong. The Holy Spirit brings it up so you confess it and move on. Move ahead. Press on. That's what I'm preaching about. But the devil comes and he brings up your past to hold you back, to keep you down. The Bible says agree with your adversary. Every time the devil brings up something, reminds me of something that I've done in my past, I agree, devil, I am guilty. It happened. It was as bad as you say and worse.
But praise God, it's under the blood. Put your hands together and praise God. Oh, I love this verse, Psalm 103, 12, as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Now, let me tell you how just beautiful and powerful the Word of God is. He didn't say the north from the south. He said the east from the west. If you had a globe in your hand and you start up here north and you go south, you go south, you go south, you go south, all of a sudden south meets north and you start going north. Am I telling the truth or not? But if you take that same globe and you go east and you go east and you go east, guess what? It never runs into west. And you go west and you go west and it never runs into east. That's what he's done with our sins. Cast them as far as the east is from the west. He remembers them no more. It means he holds them against us no more. Micah 7, 19, you will again have compassion on us. You will tread our sins underfoot and hurl, cast all of our iniquities into the depths of the sea. Stop digging up what God has buried. Stop digging up. what God has buried I love the hymn writer when he said living he loved me dying he saved me watch this and buried he carried my sin far away all of our sins been buried in the deepest sea I've just been cast as far as the east is from the west and he holds it against us no more we've all messed up look at who's writing these very words
we're talking about Paul who used to be Saul he imprisoned believers he killed Christians he was there at the stoning of Stephen how would you like to have a pastor or an evangelist preaching who imprisoned or killed some of your loved ones we've got to continue to put ourself under the forgiveness of God forget those things which are behind what does that mean it means all your sins and all of your successes let's talk about that the old adage in sports is this the only game that matters is the last game you played the only game that matters is the last game you played failure is not fatal and success is never final you are not who your past says you are you're a new creation I tell you old things are passed away behold all things become new your past does not define you sin or success sins must be forgiven success must be forsaken stop saying look what I did I don't care how good it was or how bad it was stop saying look what I did no God gave Israel daily manna we're to pray the Lord's prayer give us daily bread yesterday's provision will not be sufficient for today you can't live on yesterday's blessing you can't live on yesterday's strength as your days are the Bible says so shall your strength be it's so sad when people live in the good old days let me tell you what the good old days are right now today today I looked at Tammy one time and I meant it right I just was overwhelmed with the blessing of God and I looked at her and I said baby I said we've had such a great life you know what she said well I hope it's not over yet the good old days are the days you're living right now and and that ought to be your attitude every day when you wake up live one day at a time what does God want to do right now then
he says why that we're going to be straining for the things that are ahead straining for the things that are ahead so here it is it's a picture of a runner and he's straining for the finish line let me tell you every runner knows you're going to get cramps every runner knows you can have some falls along the way but when life gives you lemons you turn it into lemonade put some sugar in it amen put some sweetener in it I'm telling you don't let life get you down you start every day reading this book you know every day I read this book you know what I'm reminded of we win in the end we win in the end I'm so thankful over 2,500 of you have signed up to read your bible every day come on put your hands together and praise God over 2,500 and if you are reading your bible every day and you haven't let us know just text bible to 40371 and just just say I'm I'm having a daily devotion I'm reading my bible a verse every day whatever plan that you're on let me tell you our best years are in front of us Job said what the bible says about Job that God blessed the latter years more everybody say more more than the beginning and I believe that in our own life God has more for us he's doing a new thing that's why he says here in this passage reach forward what God has for you is not in a rearview mirror Jesus said an interesting thing one day he said remember Lot's wife and that's all he said about her now what do we remember about Lot's wife she looked back she looked back she was turned into a pillar of salt we were teaching that in Sunday school one time a little boy said hey that's nothing he said my mom was driving last week and she looked back and turned into a telephone pole but I'm telling you hey just got to make sure y'all are awake you get the point don't look back
remember the best forget the rest it's an exciting new day and everybody said here's the last one press on with perspective now what's the perspective you're supposed to have I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward our perspective has got to be heavenward we're focused on the prize the prize is not earthly it's eternal here it is all of us then who are mature should take such a view of things our perspective our view of things it's got to be heavenward and if on some point you think differently that too God will make clear to you only let us live up to what we have already attained it's not the verses in the Bible I don't understand that give me trouble it's the ones I do understand are we living up to what we've already attained are we thinking differently than the world are we focused heavenward here it is the verdict still out on every one of us none of us have crossed the finish line yet finish well we want to make sure that we finish well press on child of God don't quit activity is not always the same as productivity it's not listen now it's not what you may do or might do it's what you must do it's not what you would do or could do it's what you should do this one thing I do you can't chase two rabbits because you'll never catch either one of them you can't serve two masters Jesus said now why is it we all have the same number of hours in the day we all have the same amount of time given to us every day and some people do more with it than others focus focus everybody's got a to-do list but what you got to be reminded of is everything on the to-do list is not equal everything on the to-do list is not urgent what matters most learn to say no to the good things so you say yes to the best things this one thing I do do you feel overloaded overbooked over committed and overwhelmed today are you tired of attempting too much and accomplishing too little you eat an elephant one bite at a time seek first the kingdom of God every day his righteousness all these other things will be added to you whatever you do work school whatever you do do all for the glory of God what is the one thing that you need to stop
doing what's the one thing that you're not doing that you need to start doing what's the one thing that if you did that one thing it would really help you the most maybe personally maybe in your health physically spiritually maybe in your marriage in your family in your job what's the one thing if you did it it would make your life better you know we had to reschedule this revival that we're having next Sunday because of snow in fact we had two Sundays back-to-back we had to cancel because of snow where are we living you know this is not the North Pole we're not used to that our blood's way too thin for all the snow we've had this year but I believe in the prophets of God there will be people who will be saved and baptized next Sunday that weren't even here in January see God God's got it rigged he knows what's best oh I'm just telling you there's there's such a freedom when you realize that yesterday I was reminded of a story about a neighbor we had in Arkansas his name was mr. John and mr. John was a nice man lived by himself never had any company never saw any family over there at Christmas the children would take him cookies and we'd go by and try to check on him during the holidays and one Sunday morning we got up snow was all over the ground and as I'm driving to church his car his yard was filled with cars I've never seen that before and I thought oh my mr. John died and all the way the church all they I could think about is this I sent him cookies I was nice to him but I never talked to him about the Lord I never talked to him about it where he's gonna spend eternity and and I was convicted and I just couldn't hardly preach that day for thinking about him well the next morning Monday morning we get up snow still on the ground and I'm headed to work I've got appointments and who do you see out there shoveling snow but mr. John and I said praise God he's still alive I'll talk to him later and I went on out of our neighborhood and I got to the first stop sign and the Spirit of God convicted me and said nothing that you're about to do is more important than going to talk to mr. John I turned that vehicle around I went back I said mr. John it's good to see you today he said preacher good to see you I said oh but mr. John you don't understand I said yesterday I saw all those cars in your
yard and I thought you died it really is good to see you today he said yesterday was my birthday and if I remember correctly he was 83. 83. And I said well happy birthday and I'm glad your family came in to celebrate. I said but Mr. John I just got to ask you if yesterday you had died and all the family came in because you were gone where would you be spending eternity? Mr. John teared up and he looked at me and he said preacher I'd be in hell. I said Mr. John what makes you say that? He said well he said me and my wife had five kids. I worked third shift and he said one night I got off early got some flowers gonna come home and surprise her and when I came in I caught her with another man and she left me and all five children and I raised every one of them by myself and and here's what he said he said I've never been able to forgive her and he said I know I wouldn't be in heaven and I said well Mr. John I'm sorry I can't imagine what that was like but I know this to be true you will never be able to forgive your ex-wife until you receive God's forgiveness and I just went through the gospel with him and I said Mr. John would you like to pray and receive God's forgiveness and he said I sure would and right there standing in the snow in his front yard he prayed a humble simple prayer and gave his life to Christ and I'm telling you at 83 he got baptized that man was so excited so happy so on fire for the Lord and I tell you that story because yesterday we drove in our neighborhood and all up and down the street were cars and cars in some our neighbor's yard and when I saw it immediately I thought about Mr. John I thought we have already talked about it we've been praying that they'll come to revival and I thought oh my we've waited too late and you know what as one of them got out of the car I said is everything all right and they said yes we're celebrating a birthday I said I know how this story ends amen come on somebody hey one thing everybody say one thing one thing matters this week and it's revival I don't care what else you get on the schedule revival and regardless of whatever else I do I promise you my wife and I will do everything humanly possible to get those neighbors to revival next Sunday now who's your Mr.
