No Crezcas Solo | Crossroads en Espanol
El crecimiento no sucede en aislamiento. Frodo necesitó a Gandalf. Luke necesitó a Yoda. Y alguien te necesita… a ti.
Verán, traje a mi banda. ¿Lo ven? Soy mamá primeriza y aprendo mucho. Aprendo muchas cosas nuevas. No me odien. If you want to be a fun and happy mom, here's how you're going to do it. Here's how I do it. I consider myself a fun and happy mom. I want to be a fun and happy mom. It's way more boring and isolating than in Spain. If your child is crying, they have a reason to cry. Talk about exclusively breastfeeding and choosing solid foods at like six plus months. Here's a fun summer activity to keep your kids entertained for hours. I made this aluminum foil river and my kids absolutely loved it. I love that for her. With baby number two that I didn't do with my first daughter. Welcome to another week of what I meal prep my toddler. How does she have time for this? If you want to have smart kids, you have to play with smart toys. Ten main reasons why your child is not listening to you. Mom is listening right now drowning in guilt and perfectionism. Me, that's me.
That's the first thing you would tell her. Take a deep breath. Put your hand on your heart. In fact, just breathe in with me. It's like... Look at that. It says, mama, you know I love you, girl. Look that mama in the eyes. Stop looking at me. Look at the mama. Come on. Mama, you're the queen, girl. Y'all better sing. Y'all better sing. Come on. Mama, I just want you to know. Mama, I just want you to know that loving you is like food to my soul. Loving you is like food to my soul. Applause. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms. To whoever wanted to be a mom. To the mom who suffers, wherever you are. Happy Mother's Day. Go. I have to preach. Thank you. I love you. Man, that was just a funny reminder that when the world makes its best effort to offer us hope, it will always be short. Our hope is in Jesus. And we will see that he gives us hope,
not through things like TikTok, but through this unique strategic relationship that we will talk about today, called Disciplado.
I try to be a good friend. I try to lead well what I direct. I am a volunteer in the student ministry. I try to remember to be human, drink water and exercise from time to time. There is a lot on the table, and there is this tendency, maybe you are like me, you want to take life by the horns and do something with it. You want to be in everything, all the time. There is a little silly quote that floats on the internet from time to time, and it doesn't even have an author because it is on the internet. And it says something silly like,
hey, just remember that you have the same hours on a day as Beyoncé. If it is true, I should be on a secret tour, release an album, be a great mom, friend, shine and smell good. And don't get me wrong, I love my girl Beyoncé, but the trick is that you look at her and think, oh, she is doing it alone. I want to say nothing. She has people, and what I have found is that the way I don't crumble under the pressure of everything I just mentioned is to have people, real people, not just to support me, but to challenge me and make me grow. And that has happened specifically to me through the relationship of disciplining. Disciplining is an uncomfortable word depending on where you come from or where you are today. You could think of that word and remember people drinking poison on islands
or people with white tunics following a cult leader. In reality, that word has been kidnapped by selfish people and often has been subused or undervalued in the church. But the reality is that disciplining is God's idea and it is His plan to multiply and expand His kingdom. It is His way of sharing His love. In the first part of the Bible, in Genesis, one of the things God tells us is the first commandment He gives us is to be fruitful and multiply. He doesn't just talk about having many children. That's not what He says, because it wouldn't apply to everyone. We see a flash of what He says when Jesus speaks to us in Matthew 28. He said, And there was Flo. And so, over and over again, Flo invited me to her life. That was what she did. She invited people to girls' nights
or to Biblical studies that she organized. And often, because she was so kind and embodied the love of Jesus, I simply said, yes, no, thank you. That was my answer. I'm fine. I'm fine, Flo. There was a reason why Flo insisted because I thought, why do you want to be with me? Although sometimes she accepted her invitation. She accepted because she was contagious and I said, okay, I'll go have coffee with you, no problem. When we had coffee, she asked me, so, what is God doing in your life? What, do you think you're carrying too much? As if you had a lot to do and you needed to rest a little. I hated those questions because I thought, who are you? Who do you think you are? And what I realize now is that Flo, in reality, was kindly inviting me to a relationship of discipleship. I wish I had said it because I would have said no,
but at least I would have known. At least I would have known that she was trying to give me some space for the truth and for the challenge. At that moment, I was not willing to accept because it was a disaster and I thought about it for more hours of credit at any time. I was right to ask about rest because I worked from 5 to 6 jobs voluntarily to pay my studies trying to prove that I could do it on my own. Look, the reality was that I had a lot of people around me There were a million and a half clubs where I was, but no one who knew me, no one, no one who really, genuinely knew the real me. who were also in need of help. So, I did my best and I was in the process of receiving a lot of help but I couldn't get it. And because they didn't, they couldn't love me. Flo only tried to show love and I couldn't leave her. So look, the beginning of my story with the disciple is not a triumph. But fortunately, one of the most successful relationships of a disciple outside of Jesus and his twelve disciples is in the book of I Kings, where we meet a man named Elias and his encounter with a man named Elisha. I don't know if God wanted to be funny by giving them the same name. We'll call Elisha Shayshay because that's what I would call him. Otherwise, you'll get confused.
You won't know who I'm talking about. We have Elias and then Elisha or Shayshay or Shayshay, okay? That's what we're talking about. Let's go to the Bible. I Kings 19 says, So he left, Elias, from there and found Elisha Shayshay, the son of Zaphath, who was weaving with twelve pairs of oxen in front of him. And he was with the twelfth. Then Elias passed by him and put his cloak over him. And he, Elisha, left the oxen and ran after Elias and said, Please let me kiss my father and my mother and then I will follow you. And he said to him, Come back again, because what have I done to you? Verse 21. Then Elisha got up, followed Elias and became his servant. We have chosen that moment in the Bible. That's what we should do today, because we don't have time to go there. When we choose the Bible, we lose the context. The context is important for what has just happened. Look, Elias, the main character of the story was found a couple of chapters before, whining because he literally flees for his life. He was a prophet of God and people didn't like what the prophets said. So there was someone trying to kill him. And he is overwhelmed by life, fleeing, saying goodbye. I don't even think he wants to live anymore. He is alone and commits suicide. Maybe you didn't know there were suicidal people in the Bible, but here he is, one of the best of God. Alone and commits suicide. And as God, because he is a good father, he begins to minister to him. He begins to do things for him. The first thing he does is feed him.
And then he makes him sleep, because sometimes you need to rest. And then he reminds him, hey, I am God. I have this under control. And the last thing he does is give Elias a vision for his life. And he tells him the next steps to follow. And those steps involve Elisha. Because until this moment, Elias has done most of his ministry by himself. He has spent a lot of time alone. The vision of God for him. His steps to take him to the next level of growth. They are people. It doesn't matter who you are or how you got here today. Maybe you came out of obligation because it is Mother's Day. Or out of curiosity. Or maybe you just came out of pure habit. What God has for you and for me, his plan of growth for us, is the people. And not only do you stay with my word. We have to go to the Bible. Jesus says, God says in Ephesians 4, verse 13, God wants us to grow until we reach unity in faith and knowledge of the Son of God. Growing in maturity with a height measured by the fullness of Christ. Romans 8, verse 29 says, He also predestined those whom he knew before to be made according to the image of his Son. What does this mean? That God's plan is not that we grow to be more successful versions of ourselves. No, his plan of growth for us is that we grow to be conformed to the image of Jesus. More and more like Jesus. And his plan is not a book of self-help, but that they are people. That is one reason why my relationship with Flo did not work. Because she was real and invited me to her life.
She never gave up. She did it until she graduated. She continued to show kindness. She continued to show love. But I think Flo discovered something. Because she just looked and said, Who is around me? Who is close that could be around me? to be ready for the next phase? Who needs leadership or guidance? Who is ready to look more like Jesus? Flo could have asked, who is close? And this is really important because we see this same idea of proximity emerge in the story of Elijah and Elisha. The Bible does not give us absolutely any indication that they did not know each other, apart from that God said, go look for Elisha. Now, from what we read in the scriptures, it does not seem that Elijah took out his agenda and said, oh, it will be better to find out who Elisha is and where he lives. No, it was direct to him. Similarly, Elisha is in the field, working, doing his thing. He does not look from afar and says, man, I wonder who is that guy coming towards me? He knows instantly, it's the prophet. That's the guy. So there is proximity for them now,
and that is important because even though I want Michelle Obama to be my mentor, and I want it, Michelle, if you see me, I'm available for a coffee. I'm available. That simply will not happen because she is not close. Discipleship begins with proximity. You have to look at who is close, but proximity is not powerful enough to produce the required multiplication that the first followers of Jesus had. The next thing we see in this story is this idea of practical learning. It is not a common word or idea today, but at some point, if someone wanted to learn a trade, they formed with someone, which means that they observed, did what they did, and acted like them until they took control. We see that same idea of learning begin here, and it is very important because it requires the idea of giving up part of your own authority and putting it under someone else. I used to joke with TikTok moms. They're good moms doing their thing, looking for advertising revenue. I get it. They're doing their thing, but the reason I can joke about that is because our definition of following someone
is very passive. When we follow someone, what we really mean is that we choose what we like. We follow them from a distance and filter what we don't. It means that we save a lot of videos of recipes that we will never do. We do exercise challenges that, man, maybe next time I'll start with that 30-day calisthenics. I know I can do it. That's what we do. It means that we follow from afar, but learning is different. It's close. We see Eliseo inviting Shay to his life. He says, Come and do what I do. Eat with me. Experiment with how God works through me. Experiment with highs and lows and learn. Which means that Eliseo had to give up a bit of his authority, but the interesting thing about our version of following someone, even though it's passive, is that it still has a bit of power because it produces formation. Whether we realize it or even want to, we're all being formed by what we do, what we see, what we observe. John Mark Comer says it like this. If you're not being formed intentionally by Jesus himself, then it's very likely that we're being formed
involuntarily by someone or something else. We all place ourselves under people, even unconsciously. We're all placing our authority under someone else, even though we don't realize it. Maybe you think I'm tough, I'm an individual. You're probably right. You're the best of us. But most of us, most of us, that's not funny. Most of us have something biological where we were made to be formed. When a baby comes out of its mother, they put baby skin on skin, whoever the mother is. They put the baby on the chest because the baby will literally be formed by the mother. Even in science, we see this with Pavlov's dog experiment. The process that took place was a process of formation. Part of the spiritual formation of Israel is my recovery from anger at the wheel. When I see a car and I hear a beep, he just says, let's go. And he does that because that's what I do, yes. Don't worry, I work on it. He's being formed. Even if he doesn't want it to be like that, he's being formed. And this is the story that we see with Elisha as well.
You see, Elisha was already in the field of the farmer. The Bible says that he had two sons. Déjame volver y besar a mi padre.
Él iba a recibir transformación.
Dije, genial. Esa noche conocí a mi esposa, Megan. He goes to church as a leader of the family and all the things I want to do. How am I supposed to go to church on Sunday and be like a man of God when I hit people on Saturday, I ended up leaving the club. At that time, I started going to church. How I met Greg was that Megan was being mentored by her wife, Lynn. I asked Greg if he would be my mentor because I saw how he and his wife handled their marriage.
And I want to model my marriage after someone who is pious. And then I hit you on Mitsubishi, I'm lying there and I breathe and I hear this girl on my right. And she prays for me and it came to my mind, hey, you should pray, you know, you should thank God. But I think I needed that to sit down and say, listen, I have control. Beyond how we met at your wedding, our circles, I don't know if they would have crossed without our wives, right? I agree that that would not have happened. Yes, this is totally new territory for me too. If I had gone to Crossroads and told them, do you have a disciplinary program? I'm interested in disciplining someone, but I wouldn't have done it because I was out of my comfort zone. But I would probably have ended up disciplining someone like me. It was not my choice, but I know God was there. I know he chose the right person and I am very grateful. So yes, you gave me this Bible. What, two years ago for my birthday? Yes. Could you not do it? I opened this, I pulled the tab and it's in Romans 7, 7 and it says, I don't understand what I'm doing. Well, what I want to do, I don't do it. But what I hate, I do that. And I think, that's all my life. In my opinion, you need people like you. You need to find a group. You need to go to the men's camp. You need some mentorship. I've seen your marriage. I've seen the babies. I've seen the motorcycle accident. I've seen you grow in faith. Your rebellious attitude is disappearing. Yes, I couldn't imagine it.
Someone telling me what to do because it's not who I am. And it's always been like that. Now I notice it's not like that, especially with you. I'm surprised that following someone could make me feel so free. At some point, someone will see you. And they will see you as an example and they will say, not only did he speak of his faith, but he lived it. Yes, I love Nick's story. I love his story because it's real. This works. Proof that it works. He's multiplying this Sunday. He just baptized someone for the first time. This works. I don't know why it's God's plan to use imperfect people to grow and expand his love, but it is. And some mentions of that video. I love that Greg is not a guru. He's just a guy. He's just someone in whom Nick saw something and said, I think he wants a little of that. I also love what he says because he says, Yes, Nick, your rebellion has certainly decreased, you know? And that's my story too. We are not perfect. Discipline is not a mentoring that will make you perfect. It will only make you look more like Jesus. And I'll tell you something. What I love most is that they pointed out that it's uncomfortable at first. It really is. You need a lot of courage to raise your hand and think that you are open to this level of growth. But I'll tell you something.
I'm here to tell you what I learned. And what I learned is that if I want to limit my impact, if I want to limit my ability to be a great mother and wife, then I will end this relationship. And I'll tell you why. Because I can point out every moment of growth in my life thanks to my relationships of discipline. Without the women who disciplined me, I would not be married. Without the women who disciplined me, I would not be a faithful friend, nor would I be successful in my leadership. Without the women who disciplined me, I would not be in this scenario sharing vulnerably with you because that was not who I was. I can trace every moment of growth to the relationship of discipline. The funny thing is that at first it was not spiritual. Maybe not for you either. There was a leader that I liked and I said, I like how she leads. I wonder if she would tell me how she leads. because she has a lot on her shoulders and she does it great. Then I thought, I like how this woman is a friend and is committed to her family. I want to be like that one day. I want to have a family like that one day. I didn't even want to be a mother when I met this woman. And then she became spiritual. She was a woman and she seemed to be a woman of prayer. And I felt that maybe God was telling me that I needed to deepen in prayer. So I said, hey, could you meet with me to talk about prayer? Now all these photos that have appeared behind me while I speak are of men and women who mean something to me,
who have been key in my life. But these next three women that I am going to highlight are three women who have been key to my spiritual and deep formation. These are the women who when I looked and realized who was close to me, they were there. The first person is Paula. I asked Paula and all these women to write about how we met. Because I want to show you that this relationship is not just perfect and ascending. It is a transformational process, slow and chaotic. This is what Paula said. She said that when we met, she wanted to work on the most uncomfortable, vulnerability, both personally and professionally. It was a long time before you shared anything personal. You sat uncomfortable and avoided any personal question. It is true. Any personal question. It was not that I wanted to know more about you, although I did it because I care, or that I felt it was my job in a church to make you share, although that leads to spiritual maturity. It was because I knew you had the potential to be a world-class leader and this could be what stopped you. What a gift, what a gift from God to put someone in my life to see something that I did not see. Then, I remember asking a woman to sit with me and talk about prayer. And this is Laura. This is what Laura said. We have known each other for about four or five years. Laura said, I felt that God pointed you out so that I was available.
Your first request was about prayer. And you asked me if I would teach you more about prayer, listening, and staying. I answered your request without pressure. At first, our relationship seemed to need a lot of freedom to get closer and then away. Maybe you were testing if I would be constant with you, honoring your story and your privacy. And then, when you asked me to intervene in your life with words of encouragement or prayer, I did. I love what Laura has to say because, without me knowing, God had specifically pointed me out to Laura. God was inviting us both to grow. And so, if that is you, if you have some capacity, if you say to yourself, God, I want to be able to live the mandate of making disciples, maybe He wants to show you someone. This last person is important because she is the only one I remember saying strategically, ¿Tomamos un café? Because I looked at her life and thought, There is something there that I want. She is Ashley. And Ashley has been present for more than a decade, contributing a lot to my life. And this is what she had to say. I think that if I had to summarize who you are, what I see from where we started to where you are now, is that there has been a softening. For many women, it is difficult to be bold, strong, and brave leaders, but to continue being sweet. I have seen how you went beyond the expectations of the world about the leadership you trusted towards a holy leadership,
just as the Lord has created you. I love this because I went from being the girl who refused to be known, rejecting coffee, saying, Please, leave me alone, to raising my hand, saying, Drink a cup of coffee with me because I am ready for the next level. If your life is stagnant, if you do not know the next step, or you want to know more about Jesus, I will tell you right now. Your answer is not in the podcast. It is not in the next group you can join. It could be through this meaningful relationship of discipleship. It can take many forms. It can seem like motherhood or paternity. It can be friendship, but not just drinking beers. It is about inviting someone to strategically observe our life to challenge us and help us grow. What I love about discipleship is that it is about multiplication.
Escuchen, yo no he llegado a la meta. Quizás sientes que no has llegado.
