¿Saben a qué me refiero? Vamos a intentarlo.
There are two things, and these two things sound deceitfully simple, but let's go deep into them. I think there are two things, yes. If the current self did the future, you would be very grateful. First of all, decide who. Decide who you want to be in your life. And the second thing is to introduce yourself to them. There are very specific ways in which the Bible tells us to introduce ourselves to develop great relationships in our lives. So let's look at both things today, and the first thing is to decide who. I don't know if they're good or bad news for you, but I think for me it's a relief, but I think the future, I'm sorry, the current self is having too many relationships. We are probably trying to maintain many more relationships than we really have space for. The truth is that we are limited in terms of relationships. I think we usually realize this at some point, like, I just can't be the best friend of all. You know, we say things like that when we realize that we have hit a relational wall at different times and in different types of relationships. But the question is, do you really know where those limits are? Are you doing it on purpose? Are you intentionally deciding who is in your life, taking into account what is your ability? What is your ability? I wrote a book a couple of years ago about relationships in Jesus' life, and I really didn't intend to write a book on that topic. Rather, I read the Gospels, and I was curious about what I saw Jesus do. And so I realized, oh, he has some relationship patterns.
There are some people who are very close, and he only does certain things with them. Then there's this other circle, and he does a different kind of thing, and he gives them more of this. And then there are these other people. And so I began to notice that he has patterns, he has ways, he has methods of how he seems to be interacting in a relationship. And it made me curious, and I began to draw. When I was researching for that book, I discovered a modern social-relational theory that enjoys a broad acceptance. I think you will viscerally agree. It's called the Dunbar number. An investigation was carried out, presumably by someone named Dunbar, who formulated the theory that we have relational thresholds at different levels throughout our ability to sustain relationships. And the Dunbar number is 150. That is the maximum, speaking of genuine social relationships, of people you can really maintain and know. There are some kingdoms outside of that that I didn't bother to put there, because 150 is like the maximum threshold. But underneath it, there are some others. Five of what he called intimate, the closest people, 15 close friends, 50. He found that there is a threshold of 50, which is something that Dunbar called a personal network. We'll talk more about that in a minute. And this interested me a lot. So I just kept it and considered it. I wonder if there is something like that in Jesus' life that I could see because I was already drawing these relationships. So I tried it and it turned out to be very similar. In the life of Jesus, during the years of his public ministry, we have a good record of his relationships.
Those are the years that we are considering. It seems to have three people with complete access. Pedro, Santiago and Juan. Pedro, Santiago and Juan. If you read about his life, you will hear those three names and you will notice that they receive more of him. Then he has a line in 12. This is probably the most common group for us to look at. They are his disciples, the people with whom he was constantly. He taught them, traveled, worked and ate with them. It is his close circle. Omar set this number at 15, calling him close friends. They are your people. Jesus had a group of around 72. We will see it in a moment. I tried to tell everyone, but it gets confusing because sometimes people are mentioned in groups and the exact number is not known. We are in the area and this made me think. And if there is a design. And if God designed us intentionally with certain limitations. In different points, at different thresholds. We can vary a little, we do not have to follow them blindly, but what if there is a design? Does that mean that today, if we make decisions within that design, our relationships would improve? When I talked to some people about this.
I want to redefine how you experience your whole life, because for us, this is the church, and I don't mean crossroads with that. I want to say, you are brothers and sisters who also follow Jesus all over the world. I believe God has a personal network for you. Dunbar used a personal network of 50 people for this group. Who are they? Dunbar doesn't say it, but Jesus makes it clear that these people could be the right seeds. The people with whom you drive the kingdom of God and who really help you be on a mission. Knowing what your life is for, experiencing the life God has for you, being more fruitful, deepening your faith, what if, what if he had a personal network for you? I want you to meet one of mine. Her name is Hannah. I want you to meet Hannah. She was the presenter of our career trip, very recently here on Crossroads, on video. She did a fantastic job. I met Hannah many, many years ago. And she said, after we met, a couple of years later, she said, you know, without offending, but at the beginning, I wasn't looking to be friends with a white woman in her forties. She said, you know, there are many like me around here, and I wasn't looking for that. And I said, okay, without offending, but how did we meet? We met because we were working on the same mission. And while we were doing it, we were thinking, oh, you, you, oh, I noticed you, you follow Jesus like I do. You care about some of the same things as I do. You have some of the same gifts as I do. And while we were moving forward in the kingdom of God, in the mission of Christ, with other believers, we thought, oh, you, that's interesting. I wonder if we should have met. Yes, we definitely should have met.
And now, years later, she, in fact, mentors one of my daughters, who would have been like a baby the moment I met her. You never know what God has planned for this type of relationship if you can't predict it. All you can do is start to move in His mission and look around you and say, who else do you bring into my life? And here's the point about the gospel. He doesn't care about your personal preferences. When we believe in the gospel, it unites us. It's not necessarily people like us. Why would that be? Well, let's think about what the gospel really is. When we accept as truth that the Son of God became flesh, He came to earth, lived a perfect life, died on the cross in our place for our sins, resurrected from the dead to give us the welcome to the eternal life of God by the presence of His Spirit in us. Try it. And that Spirit is in every part of your body. Every believer, every brother and sister in Christ you have, shares the same Spirit, united by the same love. They don't care if your algorithm shows you their page. If they look like you, have your age, your stage of life, children or not, are single or married, it doesn't matter. The love of the gospel unites completely different people in a mission with an officer in command and begs us to participate in the amazing, powerful life that that brings. It's a very specific type of love. It's a loving and automatic love, like a father to a son. I no longer love a son for his personality, because they prefer certain things or like certain activities. It's a deep love, completely loving and automatic, through the Spirit. and you of God. That is the type of love that brothers, sisters,
literal brothers and sisters, parts of the body, share with each other. And I really don't think God cares that Hannah was much younger than me, single at that time. We had nothing in common, not even friends in common. It just doesn't matter in this field of relationship in your life. What God cares about is who wants to connect you in his mission, so that you live the life that he has for you. Comrades are not based on compatibility, but on the pact. It is a binding promise of God that they are together. So if you want this field of relationship in your life to be more strategic and develop, there is something that we must do. And it is showing up in a very particular way. Now I think we discourage, when I say we, I mean we of the royalty here at Crossroads. We say things like, introduce yourself and you will find your people. But how many of you have appeared somewhere and think, they were not here? Whoever those people were, they were not here. Those people were not my people, you know? And that happens a lot. And I think that accidentally we discourage the continuous appearance to develop
this type of relationship in our life. So I rewrote it. I'll give you a new version. See how you like this one. Introduce yourself consistently for a couple of years and you will discover an interesting collection of 50 to 75 people who will slowly become an unexpected presence and clarifying strength in your life. But it will take time. What do you think of that one? Better? I don't know, do we like that one more or not? But that one has been honestly much closer to my experience. But there are very specific ways in which we can start to assist each other. If you want comrades, if you want this area of personal network in the kingdom of God, you have to appear. And I just have to say one word, I'm a Yenxer. And I'm noticing something below Generation X. All of you, we have softened what it means to introduce yourself. Now if you give a RSVP to a boomer, you're doing it. Yes, you're going to do it.
You're doing it. You're going to check their calendar. You're going to put it right there and they're going to give it to you in 48 hours. And if someone gets sick, they're going to change the number. That's a boomer RSVP if I've seen one. Yes, now. Below Generation X. I'm not so sure. RSVP? Do you want me to tell you that I'm going to go? Now? Are you serious? Are you kidding me right now? We had this babysitter for years when my children were little and we adored her. She went to college at a given moment and we went to visit her. And we were talking about college life and how it worked. And I told her at that moment that my husband and I went to college when no one had a phone. Like, you didn't have a phone. And she said, how did you find your friends when you went out? And I said, now, no, wait, get ready, get ready. I'm going to tell you the secret. And I said, we made a plan.
And then we showed up. And she said, wow, no, that would never work. And I said, she said, you mean, how? You just decided. And that was it. And I was like, yes, we did. We said, I'll see you at Mac and Joe's at 11. And she said, well, and what if they didn't come? I said, well, then I'm sorry. She said, do you mean that if they were somewhere else at the bar, it was full and you never saw them? That was it? I said, that was it? She says, it definitely wouldn't work. We had the most fun conversation. Oh, how, oh, we haven't, we've softened what it means to go somewhere. And our devices really don't help us because they allow us, you know, they allow us. You know, we can get to anyone, at any time, anywhere. You really don't have to commit. We'll see. It'll be later. I don't know. Maybe. Your future needs to know how it looks to present yourself in reality in all those spaces. But we're talking in particular about what it means to present yourself as a comrade,
as someone who is. He's trying to cultivate relations in the kingdom of God. There are some verses in the book of Romans, chapter 12, that Paul writes. And I'm going to highlight four of these verses. The whole passage is great. It says a lot of different things, but I think these four verses contain some ideas about our greatest opportunities, given the culture in which we live. If we want this kind of relationship, what kind of seeds should we plant? Now, Paul just said at this point in the book of Romans, he just reminded them, you are part of a body. You are part of a family of God. And then he says this. Love one another with fraternal affection. Exceed one another in showing honor. Do not be lazy in jealousy. Be fervent in spirit. Serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope. Be patient in tribulation. Be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. He continues to say a few other things, but these four verses encapsulate, I think, what could be our greatest opportunity to start planting seeds, to start presenting ourselves in these spaces so that we have something good that is growing. The first thing he says is, love one another with fraternal affection. I will give you three assumptions about what kind of love he is referring to. You will only need one.
It is brotherly love. It is automatic love, united and connected to God that flows through your family. Love one another like this. And then the words he gives here are not emotional words. It is not to assist emotionally for someone. I think that's great. I am sure that it is embedded in part of what is happening here, but what he chooses are words of effort, energy, and action. He says to overcome, to honor, to serve, to contribute, to show hospitality. He is talking about really doing the work of the kingdom of God together. Now, the things he names here also, curiously, appear in a different way in other lists that Pablo writes, gifts of the Spirit. So basically he is saying gifts of the Spirit as hospitality, prayer, compassion, giving, service. These are things that the Spirit of God that flows through the family actually trains us to do. And we simply begin to do them together. And while we do them, the comrades are not so chosen. We are not, remember, we are not doing auditions and selecting those we like. They are revealed to us. While we do that, while we begin to use the gifts for which the Spirit trains us and we really appear to do them, it is when we begin to be revealed as, Oh, that is one of your people. It is not so much because of the chemistry, but because of presenting yourself constantly. Now I'm going to go to the super classic and say that I love Zoom as much as the next girl. I like the flexibility that sometimes gives us the online.
It is definitely a blessing in some respects. It is not a blessing for these relationships. We really need to be close to each other, doing the things of the Kingdom of God together to develop this scope of relationships in our life. So wherever you are, you will find those people. I found one. It was totally unexpected. It is a comrade of our family. We met him years ago. His name is Kent. This is Kent. And that is a photo of him with my older son from a few years ago. And yes, they are holding a Fathead. I am the mother who does Fatheads in the last year and shakes them at events. It was his 18th birthday dinner. We met Kent years before and we picked up our children from fourth or fifth grade or one of our children was there at that time, from the fourth or fifth grade classroom at Crossroads Eastside. Kent was always at the door when we went to pick him up. He was a regular volunteer there. We exchanged courtesies while they were looking for their things. So we got to know Kent's face and name that way. Then he changed and his volunteering was in the Ministry of Secondary when that child was in high school. And he started going to his basketball games. Probably in his second year, I guess. Definitely several seasons in a row.
So Kent starts showing up in the basketball game. Let me describe the progression. Ah, that guy from the church. Oh, hey, how are you? He was there. Always, in every game. I thought, how nice. I think he's coming to see Andrew. That's great. Simplemente empezó a presentarse.
Simplemente empiezas a experimentar. Yo solo quiero abrazar a algunos.
Me pregunto qué hará Dios y he aprendido a estar pendiente de ello ahora.
We're going to participate in projects like painting, organizing, cleaning, and much more. You can bring your family, your neighbors, and it's a tremendous opportunity to have an impact that allows people to see the impact that Jesus would have in our communities. You can learn more at crossroads.net, diagonal, go there, and find a project close to you. And if you live somewhere where there is no near project, we want to help you to be able to form one
so that you and your friends can have an impact where they live, where they can serve, love, and raise our communities. We have done this for many years and we always see the same thing. We feel satisfaction in knowing that our lives count and that we can have an impact on other people's lives. So, who says they are ready to serve? I say, let's start now.
