James 5

Obviously did so today. We're gonna go through chapter 5 Verse by verse if you have your Bibles, you can go ahead and turn there. We're gonna start with verse 1 James says come now you rich weeping how for your miseries that are coming upon you Your riches are corrupted your garments are moth-eaten Your gold and silver are corroded and the corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire You have heaped up treasures in the last days Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields which you kept back by fraud Cry out and the cries of the Reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabo So you have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury You have fattened your hearts as in the day of slaughter. You have condemned you have murdered the just he does not resist you So James writes some strong words here in chapter 5 and he's addressing the rich oppressors And and he actually Talks he uses these words. He says that the riches are corrupted and corroded so I was curious about the original words the Greek word that he used for that and It was it was actually a compound word It's a KT eos and the KT means to downgrade the eos means Poison or venom and so the word is depicting something being taken down By the effects of poison and so James is saying that those living with these self indulgent Lifestyle will come to run by the same effects of venom or poison. So again strong words This is the way he he steps into chapter 5, let's move on to verses 7 and 8 He goes on and he says therefore be patient brethren until the coming of the Lord See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth waiting patiently For it until it receives the early and latter rain you also be patient Establish your hearts for the coming of the Lord is at hand. So right here we see James go right back into Using the word patience patience is a theme of the book of James We also see here that James he didn't even refer to himself in this letter or this book as a brother of Jesus He referred to himself as a bondservant One that just serves Jesus Willfully and so so right here. He's talking again about Patience now week one. We went deep in this word. I won't do it again today

But the Greek word for patience is Hupomine hupomine is the word and it actually means steadfastness Endurance and perseverance and so the compound word for the preposition is hupo the first part Meaning under and it depicts one being under a heavy load When I think about this I look back in and I see a football player back here in the back Caleb and the other day He posted on Instagram. I'm gonna share this he posted on Instagram He's I think it's 315 pounds that you had on the bench press and I'm looking at it And I'm nervous for him because he's got this thing on his chest, which I'd never seen these it looks like a pad which it's a good thing that it was but he's throwing that 315 pounds like it's nothing and And it's like man, that's impressive But here's the thing when you look at this word hupo, it's like being under the weight of something extremely heavy something very heavy and then the last part of this word is mana and Mana, and it means depicting the resolve to stay put to abide Not to move so who pomine means to stay to abide to keep a position even while Under great pressure. I See, this is a strong attribute that mothers have would you say amen to that man? You know when you look at when I was witnessing the birth of our two sons I was blown away. I thought I thought I'm sort of tough and I realized I'm not tough That I'm very weak And so it's just it's incredible You know what what a mother goes as a matter of fact, I've shared this before but I went to all the classes back Then they had this class called Lamaze I think they finally stopped doing that because they realized is ineffective and a waste of time, but I was there I was a good student. I took notes. I listened well and When it came time for delivery, I'm in there ready to go I mean, I've got my my job is actually pretty easy, but I'm ready to go I know that I know the shallow breathing. I know the You can do it come on do this come on and and I realized real quick that does not work When the spike starts, you just shut up and leave her alone.

I'll say, Connie, come on, you can do it, you can do it. And she's like, be quiet, be quiet. And veins popping out of her neck. It's like, this is crazy. Okay, I'm just gonna be quiet. She said, give me a washcloth to bite on and I'll be fine. And that's what I did. So, don't waste your time or money with Lamaze classes if they still do it. Just carry your washcloth in there and you'll be fine. So, but you mothers are heroes. Come on, guys, can we just give it up for all the mothers again? Amazing. And so, we see patience being part of your life. As a matter of fact, during pregnancy, there's two hormones that are increased in the expectant mother. One is oxytocin, the other one is progesterone. And so, as I was reading up, oxytocin is tied to bonding and caregiving. And that's increased in an expectant mother. Bonding and caregiving. And then the progesterone has a calming effect. Together, these work as key ingredients of patience needed for the arrival of the baby. So, when we look at James here, he's talking about patience and he's saying that we're gonna need this kind of patience as we wait for the coming of the Lord.

Did you notice that's what he was addressing? Was the coming of the Lord. How many of you guys would say it feels like the coming of the Lord is definitely closer than it's ever been? Would you say that? I mean, just based on how it feels in society and everything. And so, as James is talking here, he gives an analogy of a farmer and he says that as a farmer patiently waits for his harvest until, he said, he receives the former and latter rain. Now, former and latter rain, these Jews that he's writing this book to, they all understood what he was talking to. They understood the former and the latter rain really well. For us that are not from Israel, let me explain in depth here. The former, or the early rain, it came in the fall. And so, it softened the ground for planting. The latter rain came in the spring and it matured the crop before the harvest. And so, when we look at the harvest time in Israel, I was doing a little research and what I found out is the harvest comes in different times. And primarily, I believe it's because of the drastic change in elevation. As a matter of fact, the lowest elevation on the planet Earth is in Israel.

Did you know that? It's 1,400 feet below sea level and it's located where the Dead Sea is located at. That's the lowest place on planet Earth. But yet, Mount Hermon, which is in Israel, the elevation there is 7,300, or over 7,300 feet in elevation. So, that's a drastic change. We're talking about over 8,000 feet in change. So, based on the elevation, the harvest comes in at different times. And I'm saying all this for a reason. But to put that Mount Hermon in perspective, that's over 500 feet higher than any peak in Tennessee. Anybody want to guess the highest point in Tennessee? 66, 42. We got a hiker. Come on, let's give it up for Dale Peabody. Proud of you, man. That's awesome, dude. Somebody give him a rose. So, so, so, 66, 42. 700 feet. Now, when you look at this, I mean, this is a comparison. And that, anybody want to guess where that's located at? Clingmans Dome, come on. Clingmans Dome. Anybody ever been to Clingmans Dome? Few of you have.

If you've not been there, you should visit. It's incredible. So, anyway, what we see right here in Israel, the former rain is triggering the first harvest. And the first harvest in Israel, I think it's interesting, it comes in the Jordan Valley. Are you guys with me? The Jordan Valley, and it's in April. That's your first harvest. It's the lowland. And so, something else I thought was interesting, when you look at Jesus, where did his ministry begin? In the Jordan Valley. He was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. So that's where it all started. I see some similarities right here. But the latter rain triggered the last harvest, and would you guys want to guess where the last harvest in Israel comes in at? It's called the West Bank. You guys ever hear the West Bank? It's interesting, isn't it? Because we hear a lot of conflict, a lot of wars. Lot of rumors of wars. It's always stirring in the West Bank and what I found interesting is that Lately, they've not even harvested a natural harvest in the West Bank area because the fighting has been so intense But when you look at the scripture Scripture talks about a former and a latter rain What's it talking about that or what's it? What's he referring to what we know is that the former rain the first former rain that came down in the spiritual Was was actually the day of Pentecost when the Spirit of the Lord was poured out in Acts chapter 2

Okay in Acts chapter 2 it was prophesied Jesus talked about it Joel talked about it the prophets talked about it coming and then when it actually happened that That first Outpouring the former rain. It was the day of Pentecost in Acts chapter 2 and we saw what did we see happen there? Do you guys remember what Peter did? I mean Peter is filled with the Holy Spirit He has boldness that comes upon him. He stands before Among the haters and he shares the gospel of Jesus Christ and the people were convicted in their hearts and the Bible says that three Thousand people were born again that day The church was birthed the church started this was the former rain So what about the latter rain the latter rain? I believe is a last day revival a Last day harvest that's going to come in see Bob. The Bible tells us that God doesn't want anyone to perish It's not my will that any should perish but that all should come to repentance God's not going to take joy in in anyone going to hell So I believe what the Bible is teaching here this latter-day rain is going to be a movement across the world a last-day Harvest and honestly to be quite honest. I believe that we are right there at that point in history Where God's getting ready to pour out his spirit in ways that we've never dreamed of we think 3,000 being saved was a big deal wait until 30,000 people are being saved Multitudes of people are being born again because God's sweep. That's where we're at So so so here He's talking about the latter rain. It's the end-time harvest. It's something else I found interesting is in Israel, but the lat the last harvest is always much greater than the first one Okay, the last one is much greater. So again, if you look the symbolism, maybe maybe God's trying to tell us something Maybe James was trying to tell us something through the Holy Spirit, but while we're waiting Look at verse 9 James said do not grumble against one another brethren least you be condemned Behold the judge is standing at the door So so James is making it a clip making it clear that while you're waiting While there may be turmoil while there may be great pressure Maybe you're under the weight be careful not to grumble be careful not to talk against your brothers or your sisters

And he and he's making this so clear to us that that is this so obvious so he's saying control our tongues It's important now. Let's move on to verse 10 and 11 He said my brethren Take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord as an example of suffering and patience talking about patience again and suffering He said look at the prophets indeed. We count them blessed who endured You have heard the perseverance of Job and seen the end intended by the Lord that the Lord is very Compassionate and merciful how many of you guys know that God is merciful and God is very compassionate And so he's here James is saying these people were blessed Because they endured they persevered they didn't quit They didn't stop when the pressure came on as a matter of fact James being martyred. He didn't quit He continued to the point of death and James's is saying that we should all take this into consideration But when we're talking about perseverance how many of you realize that perseverance is another? characteristic that I see in mothers I Mean mothers don't quit They don't get time off when they're caring for children. I mean you know there's not there's not a pause button Can I hear an amen mothers? You know they're guys we run to the garage, or we'll do whatever we'll just take on another job We'll work two jobs or whatever mama They they persevere they keep on going and I'm very grateful for that Again the responsibility doesn't pause look at verse 12 James said but above all my brethren do not swear either by heaven or by earth or With any other oath, and then he says this and listen closely he said let your yes be yes, and your no-no Least you fall into judgment So, during this time, people were making these elaborate oaths, and they were doing that to prove that they were telling the truth. You ever heard somebody say, I swear this is true. Have you ever done that? You know, he's saying, listen guys, he's saying, your words should be trustworthy enough that you don't have to make an extra promise to prove that what you're saying is accurate. I read years ago in Dr. Ed Cole's book, Maximize Man, I remember reading, he said that your

word is your bond. If I tell you something, I should do everything in my power to follow through with that. I remember early on, Connie and I had just gotten married, we hadn't been married long, and it's like I'm trying to figure out how to create some residual income. And so, I found a house for sale. It was a small house, and so, it was a great price. I go to the bank, at the time the bank was called Blount National Bank, anybody remember when Blount National Bank was here? Few of you do. That was such a cool place. When I was at the city of Maryville, I'd do the deposits there, and every Friday they'd have biscuits and jelly, and they'd invite me back to eat those, and I loved it. But, I find a house for sale. And I've been watching the Saturday morning programs, it says, buy a home with no money down. You ever watch that? The Saturday morning program. I'd watch that, and it's like, I'm going to try this. So I go, and I go, and I talk to them, and the lender, her name was Linda West, and she liked me, and we connected, and she basically said, yeah, I think we can do this. And it's like, that's awesome. And so, I put some earnest money down on the house to find out a week or two later that, oh, by the way, we can't do it. I talked to my boss, and he said that we can't do that. I said, you've got to be kidding me. I put down $500 earnest money. That's like all I've got. It's gone. And so, anyway, it's like, what do you do? I said, could I meet with this guy?

Now I'm in my 20s, and she said, yeah. I go in, and I sit in his office. He doesn't know me from Adam. And I don't have credit. I just told him the whole story. But here's what I told this man. I said, listen, you don't know me, but I'm telling you that I will never miss a payment. Did you hear me? I will never. I'm sitting across the table, and he's looking at a young 22-year-old guy, telling him he's never going to miss a payment. And it's like, I will never. If you'll take a chance on me, I will never miss a payment. You know what he did? He gave me the loan. I walked out of there with the loan for that house with no money down, and it was a God thing. But here was the thing, though. I had to be true to my word, right? I had to do whatever it—it didn't matter. I worked two jobs. I had to do whatever it takes, because I told him I will never miss a payment. That's the way our word should be. Our word should be, yes, it should be yes, no, it should be no. You don't have to question. If I tell you, I'm going to break my neck to make sure that I come through with what I told you. Okay? I understand we're human. I do understand that.

But I'm saying this is what James is saying. Let your yeses be yes. Man, would society not be so much better if everything wasn't behind a contract or an agreement? Wouldn't that be awesome? If people, you could just trust them? It would be awesome. It would be great. And James realized that. So verse 13, he goes on and he said, if anyone among you suffering—now this is some of my favorite scriptures in the entire Bible. If anyone among you suffering, is anyone among you suffering, let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. Is anyone sick? Let him call for the elders of the church. Let them pray over him, anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick. I want you to listen to three words right there. Save the sick. Say that with me. Save the sick. Save the sick. And the Lord will raise him up. If he's committed sins, he will be forgiven. And then he goes on. He said, confess your trespasses to one another. Pray for one another that you want—help me—that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man or woman avails much. And then he gives this example.

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours. He's putting you and I basically in the same category as Elijah. And then he says this. He said, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain in the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. So what James is saying is this. Listen, guys. You should pray and believe God. Prayer works the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man or woman availeth much and then he uses Elijah stopping the rain from heaven so you have that ability to pray those kind of miraculous prayers And so I want to look at a couple things right here He starts off if any one among you is sick if anyone among you is sick I'm going to step over this real quick Devon pray. I don't trip and fall and somebody has to pick me up all right Here we go up here in this box We keep a bottle We keep bottles of oil Okay question how many of you have ever had all? Someone pray over you anointing you with oil can I see your hand a few of you a lot of you have okay? Several of you have this is all There's nothing magical about the oil We don't sell it. We don't ship it. We don't advertise it Are you guys with me? Nothing magical about the oil But here's what he said if anyone among you sick Let him call on the elders of the church Now here's what James is saying in our church. We have we have elders. They're ordained elders in the church they're making you know high-level decisions meet weekly and And an incredible people but right here this word elder would probably not be the exact same as the elderly and Irish elders in

Our church as a matter of fact. It's anyone in our church that the church has ordained or empowered as as leaders And and so we have a lot of you that are here, and here's what he said He said let them if you're sick let him call the elders of the church and then anoint with oil in the name of Jesus So what we do is we take the oil and we'll usually put it on our finger and then we'll lay it on the forehead of the person who's asked for prayer and The the oil represents what somebody help me Represents the Holy Spirit so we anoint them with the oil and and here again. I said there's nothing magical in it Here's where the I'm not even gonna call it magic Here's what the power is the power is that it is being obedient to what the Word of God says There's things I'll be honest with you. I don't understand in the word I don't understand why the Bible says do it this way. I don't understand that But but we do it because why? Because he's in the word and God said do it and we're being obedient And so as a result of doing that we see these things happen, so he moved on He said anoint with oil in the name of Jesus and the prayer of faith will what? Well what You all said it earlier say it again Save the sick Save the sick Do these things? Call on the elders Let them pray over you anointing you with all the prayer of faith will save the sick now the word right here for save is A Greek word called sozo Okay, anybody ever heard of that. It's called sozo sozo means salvation to be saved But it also has more meanings than just salvation it also means healed delivered Prospered and the list goes on

So so here's what here's what the word says right here that if there's anyone sick today We're gonna have a prayer team at the end of the service. There'll be prayer warriors that come up here and These people have been ordained or empowered to to to work as Praying agents of the church, so here's what you do if you're sick. What are you gonna? Do somebody help me? What are you gonna? Do if you're sick today? You're gonna call They're here. You're gonna come up if you can if you can't they'll come to you And so what what you do is you come up they'll anoint you with oil and As a result you're going to receive what? Sozo say sozo Sozo, you're gonna receive sozo in this case. It's healing Another question you're here today, and you're struggling financially And you're not sure what to do When we have our altar call you're going to come forward you're going to call on the elders of the church and they're going to pray over your finances and What are you going to receive someone help me? Say sozo Sozo, it wasn't salvation there. It was prospect guys gonna prosper you now another thing You've been dealing with an addiction and you can't break it and it's a chain It's a bondage and you fought it and you fought it and it continues to be there Today, during the altar, you're going to come forward. They're going to pray over you. As they pray over you, what are you going to receive? Sozo. And it's going to mean deliverance in this case. You see, it means so many more things. But it happens when we're obedient to God's word. And so, maybe you're here today and you say, you know what? I've been coming for a while.

I'm not living for Jesus. I'm not a Christian. I've not been born again. I've not been saved. And today, you decide, I'm going to make a decision to give my life to Christ. I'm going to follow Him. I'm going to start living for Christ. And by the way, I'm 62, be 63 shortly. And I am so grateful that I was raised in a Christian community because I'm more convinced today than ever in my life that Christianity is the right way. That Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. And there's no other way. And I'm grateful for that. As Connie and I stood in the state capitol and spoke to them during general session, I shared the gospel of Jesus Christ. And I said that He is the way, He is the truth, and He is the life. And there's no other way. Because I'm convinced that. I shared with my sons, Josh and Hunter, because when I was younger, I wasn't sure. It's like, well, maybe Islam, or maybe, you know, maybe there's something to Buddhism or whatever it may be, Hinduism. Is it just because I was raised? But I'm here to tell you, and the longer you're in it, you're going to be more convinced that this is the right way. There's no other way. It's Jesus. Amen? And James understood it, and he's willing to lay down his life for it. If you're not saved today, you inherited the sin nature, and it came from the garden. Adam sinned.

Adam and Eve sinned. It was passed down. It was passed down to all of us that are in this room. God knew that. He knew it was going to happen, and He had a plan. And the plan was this. One day, I'm going to send my only son, my only son, and he's going to come to this earth sinless. He's going to be born of a virgin, the Virgin Mary. He's going to live probably a young life, run around with his siblings. He's going to hang out with James, his brother, but then one day, about 30 years old, he's going to take on the role. He's going to start his ministry, and for three and a half years, he's going to do nothing but miracle signs and wonders on the earth, and he's going to change the region. He's going to empower these men, but eventually, he's going to die. He's going to give up his life. He's going to be hung on a Roman cross, beaten, and hung, and die, and take his last breath on that hillside called Calvary. His body will be laid down in a borrowed tomb, but God won't forget about his son. On the third day, God's going to amazingly resurrect his son, bring him back to life, put life back in his body, and then people are going to start seeing him, including his brother James. He'll ascend to the Father and be there at the right hand of the Father until we get there to meet him, until he comes back to pick us up, amen? And I believe it's coming soon, but this is the gospel, and Scripture says that anyone, you may be lost today, and you can receive this gospel message that I just shared. If you respond and say yes to Jesus, or maybe you're sitting in the prison, you can say yes to Jesus today, and you'll receive, somebody help me, what will they receive? A sozo, which is salvation, so it encompasses everything. It's everything we need, and it's all there.

Sins will be forgiven, but there was a key word that he mentioned right here we need to not forget. Confession and prayer are essential to your healing. Do you have someone that you can confess your sins to? Is there someone, we don't have a priest at the church, we don't have a booth out here that you come by and drop your confessions and your money off. If we did, we could probably, just we'd probably pay our building off a lot quicker, but that's not who we are. But I'm going to say this, it is essential that you have someone that you can confess your faults to. Who is that person? It doesn't have to be me. It doesn't even need to be me, but you need someone, someone you trust, someone that's not going to judge you, someone that loves you, someone that cares, where you can just sit down and say, hey, I'm struggling with this. And they're going to help you through that. Here's what happens. Many people are walking around needing healing, but they've not found a person they can confess to yet. Confession comes before the healing. Find someone, maybe it's your life group leader. Maybe it's someone in your discipleship group. Maybe it's a friend, someone you're close to. But every single one of us need that person. Can I hear an amen? We all need someone that we can talk to, that we can share that with, and that's what James is saying. Last two verses, we're gonna wrap it up. But before I finish up on healing,

I wanted to share this with you. When I was a young boy, raised in Townsend, when we would get sick, chicken pox, flu, whatever, most of you have heard this story, but we didn't run to the doctor. Back then, I felt like they would just let us lay there until we got better. That's what it felt like. It was different. I don't think they had a children's hospital in Knoxville. It was a different time. But I'm gonna tell you something that I did, and I'll never forget it, and I'm very grateful for it. When I got sick and I felt really bad, I would ask my mother if she would call Mamaw, that's what we called her. Many of you have heard this story, some of you haven't. Mamaw, see, she was a next door neighbor. She lived close to us. And Mamaw was a godly woman. I mean, she prayed regularly. She read her Bible. Her Bible looked like it was that thick, where she was always in her word. She knew the Bible, she knew God. But I would call, and as a young boy, I didn't know all that. But here's what I did know. That if Mamaw came to our house, and I'm laying there with a hot fever,

Mamaw would come over to me as a little boy, and I can remember her laying hands on my forehead. And she would start praying. And many times, the words coming out of her mouth wasn't English. And I didn't understand, but here's what I did know. That every single time, not five out of 10, not nine out of 10, but every time Mamaw showed up, I got better. And what did that do for a little boy's faith? I knew there's something that she's got that works. She was different, I even thought she was odd. I did. She wouldn't cut her hair. She wouldn't wear blue jeans. She was just different. But there was something about that different that I liked. Because I knew that when she prayed, it made a difference in my life. And you and I have that same ability. How many of you mothers would love to have that be a memory from your grandchildren or children? That, man, if I can just get Mimi, if Mimi will just come and pray over me. Woo, there's power in prayer. Come here, Connie. Come up here if you would. I'm gonna put you on the spot, like I normally do. How many of you realize that I'm so blessed to have a woman like Connie?

I really am. I want you to understand something. I wasn't always living for the Lord, doing the right thing. But Connie stayed with me. Today, there's not a better blessing. Every morning, it doesn't matter, this morning it's 5.30, but every morning we start our day right like this. Right like this, praying, praying for our church, praying for you, praying for our family. And there's power in that. I feel the Lord answer those prayers. It's like it gets God's attention. And I'm so grateful. And I wanna encourage all of you, all of you that have mothers, welcome those prayers. Ask Him to pray for you, because those prayers work. Can I hear an amen to that? Last two verses, and we're wrapping up chapter five. Slide over here and help me preach, Connie. She's really getting nervous now. Said this, brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns his back, turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins. Amen. Another truth. Another truth.

When a son or daughter wanders away, these mothers are relentless. You won't give up. You won't stop. You won't quit. You keep going after them. Go to the ends of the earth to rescue a prodigal. Can I hear an amen, mothers? You will, and I've watched you. When our youngest son that was up here singing that song this morning, when he was out in a dark place, did you hear him scream in that last little section? I told Connie, I said, that's what he used to do out in the world. It was that screaming, but he's just screaming for Jesus now. Can I hear an amen? Come on. Praise the Lord. But I watched Connie on a regular basis. She would go upstairs to Hunter's room, and I don't see the bass. She would go to the bass guitar, and she would get this oil out. She kept the oil. She would take that oil, and she'd rub it all over his bass guitar. He had no clue. He'd be out there jamming in downtown Knoxville. Were they all the dark side or whatever you call it? He didn't know that there was a covering, an anointing, a prayer that one day, he may be gone now, but there's a mama that will not quit praying, will not quit believing, will not quit trusting the Lord. And so, this is what James is leaving us with. He's ending the book by declaring that we are on a rescue mission, okay? You guys realize that. Every single one of us are on a rescue mission, and we're to go after the lost at any cost.

The Lord showed me back in December, He said, in 2026, I felt the urging of the Holy Spirit saying, go after 2,026 lost souls this year. Amen? How many of you believe that? That's big, but God can do it. I got with Devin last week, and I was curious. He keeps up with the spreadsheet and the numbers, and salvations and baptisms. So I got with him, and I said, can you get those numbers for me? His first quarter, I'm curious on where we're at. Guys, listen, I was blown away when he shared with me that the church has been part of rescuing over 500 souls just this year already. Can we praise the Lord for that? That's a miracle. I shared with Devin, I said, Devin, I know we're tracking, we're trending in a good direction, but is there something else we can do? Is there anything else we can do? And today, I'm proud to tell you that this week, this weekend, we just added 115 more prisons that are watching right now, 115 more people incarcerated across America. Come on, praise the Lord for that. That is a miracle from heaven. It's a miracle from God. That puts the total at 888 prisons that are streaming and watching these services now.
