Humiliation | Part 3B

Hey, when God anoints you, it ain't no, oh, we didn't see it. Oh, I didn't see that. I didn't see that. When the Holy Spirit anoints you, you gonna see it. Everybody in the room gonna see it. When the Holy Spirit anoints you, you gonna see it. Driving your little smokin' Pinto. Pinto's so old, Ford done forgot they made it. Anybody remember the Pinto? I ain't never, I don't know if anybody still has a Pinto. As much as I dog out a Pinto, I think if I saw one for sale, I'd have to buy it. Driving that Pinto, think they gonna be something. And so you scrape, and you pray, and you press, and you turn down dinners at restaurants because you need to be home saving money and studying. But they didn't pay no attention to none of that. Y'all ain't doing me right. And then you just press and press. And even after failing whatever exam and going back at it again, you finally get the degree. And then what are they gonna say? Oh, she thinks she's something because she's a doctor now. Wait a minute. You dogged me out when I was on the bottom. You dogged me out now that I done made it. At some point, church, we just gotta get over people. Amen. Let me prove what I'm saying is not out of context. 1 Samuel 16, whichever one, 17. Now, you would think his brothers witnessed the anointing. And it wasn't a little touch and a little olive oil. It wasn't a little touch and a little oil.

I mean, use your head, Ryan. It wasn't like touching a little, you know how they did back in the church days. You know how they did. Anybody know they had to cut a little oil in the pulpit? Y'all know what I'm talking about. Ooh, break that oil out of that back of that wooden pulpit. Hold on. They put a little oil on that finger. Ow! You remember the day? Hey, I ain't knocking nobody's oil. Don't write me no letter. Bless your heart. That's not what went on David's head. They poured a gallon. That horn would hold about a gallon of oil. Everybody knew he just got anointed. His hair is wet. His beard is wet. It went all down his garments. You knew he was anointed. It happened right there in front of everybody. Spilled it all on mama's floor. When God anoints you, it'll mess your hair up. It'll stain your clothes and get all over the floor. When God anoints you, ain't no, oh, we didn't see it. Oh, I didn't see that. I didn't see that. When the Holy Spirit anoints you, you gonna see it. Everybody in the room gonna see it.

It wasn't like the brothers later on could say, oh, I didn't know he was anointed to be king. Yeah, you knew you was in the room. Here's Jesse, David's son, David's daddy. First Samuel 17, verse 17. Oh, let me read this, verse 15, because this is gonna set some up later. You can't miss a word. Look in verse 15. But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep. Whose sheep? His father's sheep. Where? At Bethlehem. See, David didn't get the big head. Because after he was anointed, he becomes best friends with Jonathan. And Saul, when the Bible says in the previous chapter, when the Spirit of God came on David. They left Saul and Saul lost his mind and David would be over Jonathan's house playing his harp and the evil spirit that was tormenting Saul would leave and David would stop playing and Saul would be like, oh play that again. And when David would play the harp, the king in the seat had peace. But David was the king in the spirit. Saul's just the king in the seat. He used to be the king in the spirit and in the seat, but he wouldn't honor God. So the spirit left him and went to David. Saul was still in the seat, but don't have the anointing for the seat. When you sit in a seat, you're not anointed to be in, it'll drive you crazy. Now David knows I've got the spirit for that seat. So you would think David would say, oh, playing my harp

rids the evil of you. You think David said, I'm gonna put my heart on eBay. In other words, I don't want to play no harp that's going to aid the man in the seat I'm destined to. But God gives us seats based on how we honor them. So why would God give you a seat you wouldn't honor when it wasn't yours? You can't sit in a church and dog out the pastor because you want to be the pastor and then go start your own church and expect God to bless it because you dishonored the seat you would one day want. David's honoring the seat knowing he's anointed to be in it. How humiliating would that be? And so Saul's like, I need you around. Cause Saul doesn't know Samuel's already anointed him. And he just knows that when David's around, he's not tormented. So David could have said, wow, I'm in the castle. I'm in the family. Best friends with the King's son and the King's daughter, a good looking girl. Yeah. But guess where David's found here? Going back to the beginning of the book. To take care of his daddy's sheep. It could have been humiliating that David was even asked to be the one to take care of the sheep. Cause wouldn't you see as Jesse it's on the job training. Are y'all with me? David's in the kingdom with the King. He's anointed to be the next King. Let's let him learn all he can over there on the job training. But no, send David home to take care of his sheep. David could be like, where's Eliab? He got rejected to be the next King. Let him wash the sheep. But David is not that way. He's honorable and humble. And so he goes back to take care of his daddy's sheep. So that was humiliating all by itself. But look what happens while he's there. What verse of me and all my soul, my page turned. 16. Okay. Verse 15, but David went and returned from Saul to feed his father's sheep. Whose sheep? Hold on to that. It was his father's sheep at Bethlehem. And the Philistines drew near morning and evening and presenting himself 40 days. That was Goliath. And Jesse said unto David, his son, take now for that brethren, an ephah of this parched corn and these 10 loaves and run to the camp to that brethren and carry these 10 cheeses under the captain of their thousand. And look how thy brethren fare and take their pledge.

And David could have said, did you not see what happened in your living room? But nope, he carries the corn, the bread, and the cheese. So off he goes. Let's see what happens. Drop down to, so David goes down, and we'll go to verse 28, and Eliab, Eliab, that's the oldest brother, and Eliab said, his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men, and Eliab's anger was kindred against David. Now wait a minute, wait a minute, Eliab, are you really mad about me talking to these men about killing Goliath? Or are you really mad? Come on, people. See the Word of God will teach you how to do work, family, life, community. Because it ain't like everybody that ever got mad at you was mad at you about the thing they said they were mad about. No, that ain't it. It was that something happened in my life you wanted. Look at this. And so Eliab's anger was kindled against David and said, why camest thou down hither? Read that out loud, Shreveport and Bossier. Why camest thou down hither? Don't you love the King James Bible? I do. What you doing down here? That's the Hebrew. Why camest thou down hither? Let's stop. Let's quote it again, church, read it. Why camest thou down hither? So the older brother said, what are you doing down here? Well look at them crumbs on your beard, man.

I brought you the bread you just ate. That's what I'm doing down here. I didn't just come down here. Our daddy sent me. So notice, David knows why he's there. David is there because his daddy sent him. But notice the older brother is acting like, David, you're up to no good. Church, I need y'all to stay with me so we can get this thing done. Is Eliab judging David by David's heart or is Eliab judging David by Eliab's heart? His own heart. Church, he's judging David by his own heart. When he asked David what he's doing down here, David knows why he's there. David was sent by his daddy. It's Eliab that's not down there with the right motive. We good? Watch the next thing. Why camest thou down hither? Look at this. With whom hast thou left those few sheep? But we already read it a little earlier. I told you to hold on to it. Whose sheep are they? His father's sheep. So notice, it ain't even David's sheep. David's keeping his father's sheep. So David was keeping what his father gave him. And his brother mocked him for it. All I can keep is what my father gives me. I can't keep what he hadn't given me. So if you mock me for what I have, are you mocking me or are you mocking your daddy?

He's mocking his own father. Where are those few sheep? You mean our daddy's sheep? Now see, that's just insulting. That didn't have none to do with the bread, the cheese, the corn, or the fight. He's done got personal now where he did a few sheep. What's he trying to do to David? Humiliate him. Don't let folk humiliate you. Despise not the day of small beginnings. Verse 1610 says, if you'll be faithful over little, God will make you rule over much. Don't defend yourself, just stay quiet. A man that defends himself will always be average. You ain't got to give no long explanation why you only have a few sheep. No. Where are your few sheep at? Watch this in verse 22. I know thy pride Look at this I know thy pride This is Eliab talking to David. I know thy pride and the naughtiness of thy heart No, no, no, you don't know my heart. You know your heart And you're judging me by your own heart It's you the one that's got the pride and it's you the one that's got the naughty heart. You're trying to put your heart on me. I Don't say that to people Please don't go home from church today and tell your spouse. Oh, that's your heart Pastor talked about it today You should have been at church. You ain't gonna ever come to church you talk like that Now don't do none of that right there. This is for your freedom He said I know your pride I know the naughtiness of your heart Look at look at this for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle now

Is that why Dave is down there? No He's that he sent him but guess who is down there watching the battle if we'd read up in the same chapter guess who was Watching the battle Eliab. We're in a trench The man done dug a trench got down in the trench and is watching like this Mmm David shows up. He said you just came down here to see this battle No, you're the one that's watching the battle you're mad at me right now because I just asked the question What would a man get if he beat the man? That's what that's what sparked this whole thing is David said hey, what what what befalls the man that takes out the giant And they said well you get great wealth. You would get tax-free living. You would get a bounty from the king and his daughter David like was she pretty But David already knew because he'd have been up in the house So once again, I ask you is Eliab judging David off David's heart or is Eliab judging David off his own heart All right So we need to you know seriously turn this table on our own our own life am I judging you by my heart I'm judging you by my heart On our own our own life am I judging you by my heart Mmm David said what have I now done? Look at that. What have I now done read that? What have I now done? What does that mean? This has been a pattern? No words David's never been able to do right in Eliab's eyes what have I now done nowhere you don't like me no matter where I'm at And then he says this is there not a call All right, let's turn. I got a couple more to get out go to 2nd Samuel chapter 12. So Family, we talked about friends will humiliate family will humiliate There's one more right there in second set our first Samuel I want to give you number three our faith will bring humiliation We're gonna talk about this more Lord willing next week So number one friends humiliate family humiliates number three faith humiliates you say how did faith humiliate? Because David said let me at this giant

Because when my when I was keeping my father's sheep and a lion came I Beat I beat I beat the lion and saved the lamb and when a bear came against me I slew the bear and Then he said in verse 37 of 1st Samuel 17 I had you turn away too quick But the free notes verse 37 David said more were the Lord hath delivered me out of the pawl of the lion and out of the Paw of the bear. He will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine So once he said that I Will take down this Philistine this giant because I've seen the Lord give me a victory over the lion I watched the Lord give me a victory over the bear. I know he'll give me a victory again He's speaking his faith. And what did they do? They humiliated him? They said this boy what this man been fighting longer than you've been alive What did they do they mocked his faith they tried to humiliate his faith Lastly though Second Samuel chapter 12, number four. We're humiliated by our own failures. And I only use the word failure because it lined up with friends, family, and faith. But seriously, failures are our own sin. I expected you'd be quiet on that one. Second Samuel chapter 12, when you get there, say amen. We'll look at it in verse one. For your notes, write down Psalm 51. Psalms 51 is David's plea before God after his sin with Bathsheba. Humiliated by his own sin and shame, he goes before the Lord, and the first request he had in Psalm 51 was, Lord, have mercy on me. And he is in this broken place. He ends the psalm speaking of his own broken heart

and broken spirit by what he had done. So he was humiliated by his own moral failure. And I may be talking to somebody right now that feels humiliated by your own failure. Because nothing shames us like sin and the enemy. Adam was hiding from God after he sinned. Why? Because he was ashamed. And shame drove him away from the presence of God. And we're bad about seeing people that have committed sin and we say, shame on you. Shame on you. When we say shame on you, we're saying, hey, bear and wear what you've done. Shame on you. But I'm so grateful that the mercy of God will shame off you. Amen. And David goes before the Lord in essence and he's asking for a cleansing and a renewed heart and a return to the joy of his salvation. All that in Psalm 51. But that place came because he was tired of wearing the shame. The shame of his sin brought him to a humility that came after being humiliated. But how did all that happen? 2 Samuel chapter 12, this is where we'll close. If you're there, say amen. Verse one, and the Lord sent Nathan unto David

and he came unto him and said unto him, there were two men in one city. The one rich and the other poor. Well, so that you understand what Nathan is saying, David had, all the men of the kingdom were off to war. It was the time that all the kings went off to war and David decided he would stay back. So he's the only man home. Ain't supposed to be no men around. And he sees Bathsheba taking a bath. He wasn't where he was supposed to be. Now he's looking at what he ain't gonna be looking at. And so he sins for her. Out of that came a pregnancy. And she's got a husband that was a faithful soldier in the Israeli army. So David sends word, cause he done got himself in a mess. So he sends word to put her husband on the front line. To do what? To get him killed in battle. To cover David's mess. And so her husband gets killed in battle, an innocent man. All David, all because of David trying to cover his mess. So the prophet Nathan comes to David, chapter 12, verse one. And the Lord sent Nathan unto David and he came unto him and said unto him, there were two men in one city. One rich, the other poor. The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds.

The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds. But the poor man had nothing save one little lamb, which he had bought and nourished up. And it grew up together with him and with his children. It did eat of his own meat and drink of his own cup and lay in his bosom and was unto him as a dog. And there came a traveler unto the rich man. And he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him. He had plenty he could have given, but no, he went and took the poor man's lamb and dressed it for the man that was to come. Boy, David's like hearing this story. Him his man had all these lamb and he gonna go take this man's lamb. That's the only thing he's got he went and took it And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man And he said to Nathan as the Lord liveth the man that hath done this thing shall surely die. Oh Careful what you wish on other people And He shall restore the lamb fourfold because he did this thing and because he had no pity And look at these words in verse 7 They are powerful and Nathan said that David read it thou art the man I'm talking about you You're the rich man in the story So what happened right here The prophet of the Lord has brought the truth to David and Confronted this truth has confronted his own sin and shame. This is humiliation It's one thing to be humiliated by friends, it's nothing to be humiliated by family It's honorable to be humiliated for my faith, but the top it all off the worst humiliation is the one we bring on ourselves And church David had brought this one on himself And I want to say this because somebody needs to be reached in this moment You can be humiliated by friends you thought we're friends you can be humiliated by family that you thought were dear you can be humiliated

for your faith There's some reward that comes to that one But I feel like it's that self humiliation Where it's our sin, it's our shame that has us humiliated that the enemy really wants to capitalize on But church if you read Psalm 51 Even the shame of our own sin does not have to be the end of the story So, I don't know who I'm speaking to right now, I don't know your situation right now do you feel Humiliation in your own friendship. Have you felt it within your family? Are you being humiliated for your faith?
