Humiliation | Part 3A
God meets us in our lowest moments. Through the life of King David, we are reminded that shame and humiliation are never the final word when God's mercy is at work. ABOUT THIS SERMONPastor James shares an honest message about how God responds to shame and humiliation. Looking at the life of King David, he outlines four common sources of humiliation: betrayal by friends, rejection or dismissal by family, ridicule for our faith, and personal moral failure. David experienced all of these, from being overlooked by his own family to failing deeply in his relationship with Bathsheba. Yet in each situation, God's mercy was present and powerful. Pastor James reminds us that people often judge us based on their own brokenness rather than who we truly are. Instead of internalizing shame or trying to defend ourselves, we are called to bring our pain to God. No matter what has happened in our past, God can redeem every part of our story and use us for His purpose. KEY VERSES
When he died on that cross, and when he pierced his hands with those nails, he was saying, I am eternally covenanted and committed and connected to you. And the scars in his hands are a testimony of his faithfulness to you and me. Oh, hallelujah. We're in Psalm 41. That's where we're going to start today. I'm going to share with you four things. So when I give, when I give you that fourth thing, start thinking about where you want to get your grilled chicken. All right. So notice this here in Psalm 41, David is praying here and he's felt the humiliation of so-called friends. And I'm going to give you four things that can shame us or humiliate us. And sadly, the first one is friends. We can experience humiliation and shame from friends. And that's what David is praying about here in Psalm 41. When he said in verse five, my enemies speak evil of me. When shall he die and his name perish? Now David, it couldn't be praying this in this perfect posture of, I got everything together. I don't know why they're so hard on me. Because if you go back to verse number four, he says, I said, Lord, be merciful unto me. Heal my soul for I have sinned against thee. So Dave is not in this position of perfection. None of us are, but I'm just kind of showing you the context of where his mind is right here. And notice there were some enemies that, uh, had something to say in verse five, when shall he die? Now, what kind of friend is that? When shall he die?
I mean, I probably have some folk I didn't know about that wanted me dead, but thankfully they weren't up in my life telling me that. When shall he die and his name perish? And notice that in verse nine, David says this. He says, yeah, my own familiar friend, underline or circle that word friend. Yeah. My own familiar friend in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, I paid for the lunch ticket. My bread has lifted up his heel against me. Now, in some Bibles, you'll notice that there will be a little star next to that verse. And when you see that, that's just speaking to that verse saying it's prophetic. It speaks of Jesus. So verse nine, David is talking about his own life, but prophetically by God's spirit, he's speaking of Jesus because this very thing happened to Jesus. Verse nine, when on the night of Passover in Matthew 26, Jesus gave the disciples bread and they observed communion, the Passover meal. And you may remember, he said, the one that dips his bread next in the cup will betray me. Now, if I were Judas right then and there, I'm no longer hungry. My stomach's bothered me. I'm not going to observe Passover, but God always has what he says. And when Jesus said the one that dips his bread next will betray me, Judas was the betrayer. He dipped his bread in the cup. Jesus looked back at Judas and he said, what thou doest do quickly. I know what you're up to. You haven't plotted anything in the dark because even darkness is light to me. And he was letting Judas know, I'm always in control. I'm telling you to go do what you've already plotted to do that you don't know that I know what you're up to. And so when he went out and gathered the mob and then led them to Jesus at the garden of
Gethsemane that night in Matthew 26, Jesus, when Judas showed up, he said, friend, betray betray me with a kiss. You're going to betray me with, with a, with a greeting that was customary in that day. You're going to betray me like this friend. And so verse nine was speaking prophetically of Jesus who would be betrayed by one of his own. Think of that for a moment that Jesus was betrayed by one of his own 12 disciples, Judas, who he called friend. So David here in verse nine says, yay, my own familiar friend and whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel. Against me now. What what is it? That is humiliating about being betrayed by a friend And if anybody's ever been betrayed by a friend I'm hoping that you can relate to what we're getting ready to read here because that's the first of four things I want to talk about what is what what what's humiliating about being betrayed by a friend here Here's what's humiliating about being betrayed by a friend is that if you were my enemy and I knew you were my enemy I wouldn't I wouldn't have shared my heart with you If I knew you were my enemy you would never have been letting my house You wouldn't even got the cold to the gate in the neighborhood. Come on somebody If I knew you were my enemy, I wouldn't have told you about the things that trouble my heart I wouldn't have shared everything that I shared with you had I known That you were my enemy So my enemy wouldn't have got that much information from me My enemy wouldn't have got that much investment of my time and the sensitive things in my heart But because I thought you were my friend and I trusted you. I'm humiliated to find out that you weren't Has anybody ever trusted somebody only to find out they weren't trustworthy? You thought you had a friend, but you didn't have a friend once they got everything they came to get out of your life They were gone
It's heartbreaking It's painful to have people that you think are For you only to find out they're not And you don't know whether or not that was always their intent if that was always in their heart or if something just happened The point I'm making is is that the humiliation comes in when you think wow I can't believe I fell for that You know You start second-guessing friendship and and and sharing your life and your heart with people Jesus said this to the disciples He said I don't call you servants because the servant knows not what his Lord is doing But I call you friends Because what my father has shared with me I'm sharing with you The point is is that friendship is a safe place of sharing and letting people in on your heart And what's going on in your life and you wouldn't just leave out, you know Or give out that kind of information if you thought the person you were talking to was not really your friend So it's humiliating that Wow. I Got transparent in front of you. I revealed my heart to you. I shared my lows with you I wanted you to celebrate my highs only to find out you weren't even real. There's a humiliation that comes When you find out your friend wasn't your friend, but be encouraged. They're still true friends Amen, and I don't want anybody walking away being discouraged by hurt and thinking well, I'll never make another friend I'll never get that close to anybody again No, the a friend was born for adversity and just know that that God is still faithful It's it's not the humiliation that comes into our lives. It's how we respond to it and David here is responding to the humiliation of calling a friend a friend by taking it before the Lord and Saying Lord be merciful to me. I need you to Vindicate I need you to step in verse 10 He says but thou O Lord be merciful unto me and and and raise me up That I may requite them Lord. I need you to do something in my life I need you to do a work in my life verse 11 by this
I know that thou favors me because my enemy doth not triumph over me Do you see what he's saying here Well go with me to 1st Samuel 16 and as you go there I Want you to write this verse down in your notes. It's Psalms 27 10 Psalms 27 10 Psalms 27 10 is the psalm of David where he says this he says when my mother and father forsake me The Lord will raise me up So David not only knew the humiliation of friends that betrayed him he knew what it was like to be forsaken or humiliated even by family We're gonna touch some eventually And I got four to share with you. We almost two down Have you ever experienced humiliation by a friend that wasn't a real friend our friend that turned on you? Have you ever faced humiliation by somebody in your own family? And that's what I want us to see beginning in 1st Samuel chapter 16 so David said, when my mother and father forsake me, the Lord will raise me up. I don't know the full context of what David was saying when he made that statement. I remember recently I was reading Isaiah 49, and I'm just gonna cite this verse because it just struck me. It was like, man, I can't believe I've never read this before, but it's Isaiah 49, and it's verse 14, and here's what the Word of God speaks, and he's talking about Zion. He's talking about the people of God, the place of God. Zion has different meanings in the Old Testament
and the New Testament, but in essence, it's the people of God, and in Isaiah 49, verse 14, God's Word says this. Zion hath said, Zion hath said, God's people hath said, Lord, have you forsaken me? Lord, have you forgotten me? And that was the mind of Zion in Isaiah 49. Lord, have you forgotten me? Lord, have you forsaken me? And I think at the end of the day, we tend to blame God for what people do. So my friend wasn't a real friend, and Lord, why? And family weren't what they were called to be, and Lord, why? How many times do we take our own relationships and their failures and roll that over on the Lord? We won't be the first to have done that because when God called Adam out over his shame and his sin, the first thing he said was, that woman, the woman you gave me, Lord, that's where this thing went south when you put her in my life. So Adam blamed God for Eve. Are y'all with me? But listen to the response of Isaiah 49 because verse 15, God said this. He said, would a mother that's nursing her child forget her child? I think that's verse 15 of Isaiah 49. Would a mother that is nursing her child forget her child?
God was answering Zion, the people of God, that were saying, Lord, have you forsaken us? Have you forgotten us? God was saying, would a nursing mother forget her infant? And then he says this in the next verse. He said, and even if they did, know that I will never forsake you, that I have engraved you in the palm of my hand, that I will not forsake you and I will never leave you. I've engraved you in the palm of my hand. Now, Lord, when did you engrave me in the palm of your hand? When he died on that cross and when he pierced his hands with those nails, he was saying, I am eternally covenanted and committed and connected to you and the scars in his hands are a testimony of his faithfulness to you and me. Oh, hallelujah. So they're like, Lord, have you forgotten us? And he says, would a nursing mother forget her child? No, I've not forgotten you. And David was saying, you know, whether it is to amplify the faithfulness of God or whether or not he had actually experienced it, I don't know, but David says in Psalms 27 verse 10, when my mother and father forsake me, the Lord will raise me up. He's speaking of just how faithful God is. I know how much my mother loved me
and I know how much my dad loved me. When nobody else believed that I was being called into ministry, my mother and father both stood up for me and believed in the call and supported the call of God on my life. Both of them are in heaven now and I think all the time, man, Lord, I wish they could have seen, you know, that what the Lord has done in my life and Christi and I and our four kids and I think about it because I don't know what God lets them see in heaven. So I know what it's like and I'm grateful by the grace of God to have had that kind of love and support from a mom and a dad. But when David said in Psalm 27, 10, when my mother, if my mother and father forsake me, the Lord will raise me up, he's speaking of the love of God being so much stronger than even that of a parent. Amen. And it's tough when you feel humiliation in the family. So let's look at it in 1 Samuel chapter 16 when you get there, say amen. Amen. When your family humiliates you, intentionally or unintentionally, when those closest to you humiliate you,
their fault is not yours. The reason you humiliate them is because they didn't know your parents. So I asked you this question. King Saul and he says listen Saul is not honoring me and I need you to stop Were you seen in eternal life, vinegar, crying about it because Samuel had anointed Saul and so he wanted Saul to water, salt or bread? succeed and God was like Samuel I got somebody else I'm gonna anoint quit crying over Saul and so verse 1 of 1st Samuel 16 the Lord said unto Samuel how long will thou mourn for Saul seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel fill thine home with oil and go and I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite for I have provided me a king among his sons he didn't tell him which one he said you go to Jesse's house the Bethlehemite because one of his sons is my is my king are y'all with me and so Samuel's like man I can't go over there if I go over there and Saul finds out I'm going to anoint another king to take his place he'll kill me and God tells him how to do it so he gets to Jesse's house and verse 6 says it came to pass when they were calm that he looked on Eliab pay attention to these uh these boys here Eliab he would be the oldest son he looked on Eliab and said read it surely the Lord's anointed is before him so he had to been a we're gonna find out he was a he was a good looking dude he was fit sharp because you know when they when Jesse said hey you know Samuel's coming they had to you know got themselves together you know went and hit them dumbbells real quick get them hot tub muscles shining verse 11 but the Lord said unto Samuel look not on his countenance oh that's a word look not on his countenance yet been moved by way the way somebody looked until they open their mouth well pay attention to what comes out of the
mouth just don't tell him not to speak look not on his countenance or on the height of his stature because I have refused him for the Lord seeth not as man seeth for man looketh on the outward appearance but the Lord looketh on the heart so God was telling Sam you know this is not the one the eldest boy is not the one and so he starts going down the line verse 8 kind of trips me out Ryan every time I read it I get tripped out because look at what verse 8 says because he he goes to Eliab and matter of fact let me get these two boys right here y'all come help me out if Jordan and Jacoby if y'all would come help me I just stand right here all right and so man y'all about the same height with him with him hats are you are you gonna be Eliab be a tad taller and so we could switch the hats though but anyway he comes to the one he's like oh this is the one this is the one that's the one and God says nope that's not him look not on his countenance and so he goes to the next one and and and Jacoby forgive me son but what he says here kind of trips me out because look at this in verse number 8 then then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel and he said neither hath the Lord chosen this this every time I read that I'm tripped out I'm like you know he looks at one boy like no don't look on his outward account you're like no he chose this what is this I mean I wouldn't want to been old been a dab you know he gets called this what is this are you boys can be seated thank you guys but it did not just anyway so then Jesse goes gets his other boy and look at this in verse 9 neither hath the Lord chosen this and then we go to verse 10 and Samuel said unto Jesse read of church the Lord hath not chosen these seven seven sons of Jesse God said nope verse 11 and Samuel said unto Jesse are here all the children do you have another boy cuz God sent me to anoint one of your boys and it ain't none of these and he said there remaineth yet the youngest and behold he keepeth the sheep and Samuel said unto Jesse send and fetch him for we will not see Sit down on your lovely sofa until you bring him in this house See and I don't know whether or not I don't know whether or not David is even in the know In other words, I don't even know if David got the invitation I don't even day if no if David knows Samuels coming
I don't know Then he could have been just out there and no cell phone no way to reach him as I he'd be I ain't gonna be chosen Anyway, but but I don't know whether he's in the know or if he's out there knowing Because if he's out there watching the sheep knowing that his brothers get to meet the Prophet Samuel is coming to the house and you don't get to show up. That would have been humiliating So if you ever feel like you've been overlooked if you ever feel like you've been left out you didn't get the invitation You didn't get to make the audition. You didn't get to go to the interview You didn't get to fill out an application if you've ever felt like that King David knows what that feels like Jesus knows what that feels like he look at this Humiliation is not the end of a story obviously It's not the end of David's story So tell your neighbor it's not the end of your story The enemy would love to take the shame of humiliation and make you wear it until you found no value in your life whatsoever Because if the enemy could devalue your life then he can strip you of your identity and he can strip you of your purpose He can strip you of your meaning and next thing you know, you're thinking about making permanent decisions over temporary situations Shame is not the end of the story Humiliation is not the end of the story if you feel like right now Maybe you're watching my television and you feel like right now my friends have humiliated me My family has humiliated me and maybe you just feel without value without purpose I want you to know that is nothing but the enemy that is telling you these things you need to know that just as David Faced humiliation of friends and family. That was not the end of the story. It didn't matter where his He was he was on that back 40, even though he wasn't in the living room meeting the Prophet God knew where he was He can find you right where you're at Oh glory to God and So they go and get Jesse verse 12 and he sent and brought him in Now he was ruddy or a reddish and with all of a beautiful countenance Goodly to look to and the Lord said arise
Anoint him for this is he Then Samuel took the horn of oil and Anointed him in the midst of his brethren pay attention to that in the midst of his brethren He didn't take him on the back porch and say you boys go find something to do No, and right in front of everybody the the Prophet of God Samuel Anoints this youngest boy this eighth son of Jesse that just came out of the field smelling like sheep and looking like dirt It didn't matter God Spirit came on him from that moment forward and everybody saw it Now you would think that if the Prophet of God Samuel comes to Jesse's house in Bethlehem Because Bethlehem according to Micah chapter 5 was the smallest among 10,000 which means it's a very small city It's not the city you would expect something big to come out of Everything about David's story is humiliating the city He was born in Bethlehem the Bethlehemite that little old town Bethlehem. Oh Little town called Bethlehem how still we see thee live we know that this would be the birthplace of our Savior because David's humiliation pointed forward to Jesus's humiliation and Yet we think we can't be nothing because of where we were born or where we came from or what neighborhood we grew up in Or what school we graduated from or what back 40 we've been watching sheep on listen God knows where you are. He knows how to find you. Are you hearing what I'm saying to you? Humiliation is not the end of the story Man this is good and so notice in verse number I told you Cuz I lost my verse what verse I'm in In the presence of his brethren and we read that yet It's 14 So verse 13 then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brethren in the midst of his brethren in the midst of his brethren and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward and This is not This is not known to everybody but it's known to the house of Jesse. So you would think Then that his brothers are gonna be like, oh wow, man
God's done come to our house. He's done anointed our Brother, our baby brother's gonna be the next king of israel. We watch the prophet anoint him with oil We know the spirit of god is on him. Wow david man props man. Glory. No, no, no Oh No, they didn't celebrate david at all go with me to the chapter next chapter chapter 17 It's tough when you know god has done something in your life And it's tough when there are people in your life that ought to know it was god, but still humiliate you You know, we have to face it at some point And we have to face it at some point that some people humiliate you because you don't have nothing And then you'll get a little something to humiliate you again Oh, this is gonna be good right here in first samuel chapter whichever one I told you 16 This is gonna be so good. Just just stay with me You said I don't know because I appreciate twice but not to 11 30 because I got I don't have to worry about that clock To really let this thing out right here. This thing's gonna get so good. Just stay with me People tend to judge us by the con by the condition of their own heart Let me say it again people tend to judge us by the condition of their own heart In other words, they'll make you out to be something you're not and you'll wonder where that came from But it didn't come from what they see in you. It came from what they see in them And yet we'll take somebody's judgment on our life That came out of the condition of their heart and then we'll wear it Just because you're toxic don't make me toxic Well, I want to thank you for allowing me into your viewing area today And I hope that you were blessed by the ministry of god And I hope that you were blessed by the ministry of god And I hope that you were blessed by the ministry of god And I hope that you were blessed by the ministry of god's word Our broadcast is made possible through the faithful financial support Of our members and partners here in this viewing area and I want to encourage you to prayerfully consider Supporting the work of this ministry so that we can take the message of jesus as the manifested word of god Reaching more people in more ways and in more places than ever before. Thank you for your support
Hey when god anoints you ain't no oh we didn't see it. Oh, I didn't see that. I didn't see that When the holy spirit anoints you you're gonna see it everybody in the room gonna see it Amen Healer deliverer way maker peacemaker provider salvation everything in one name He is the capital s son of god He's man enough to relate and god enough to demonstrate his power In the beginning was the word the word was with god The word was god verse 14 and the word became flesh and we beheld his glory
