How To Look For The Hook

Hey, today we're talking about what sin looks like and how to overcome sin in your life. I'm gonna give you Satan's secret, his scheme and the process that he leads you to sin. Wow, everybody thinks this is scripted. We have, the only person who has any notes is you. We have no idea what's going on. It's the Holy Spirit and we did not plan to wear the same shirt. That's right, we both walked in with it. And sometimes I don't even know what I'm doing over here. But that's the fun of the episode. People always say, does Kandi and Adam, that's what we love about this thing, is y'all are speaking real time, in the moment, and none of this script, not even right now we're talking about it scripted. But I will say, speaking of God is good all the time.

We just got news at the time of this recording. Just got news. Our son, Rick Gallaty, ran for student body president of his school. And we just got news, he won. He is the new student body president. Yes, this year. Yes. So excited. You're really excited about it. What's the slogan? What is the slogan? You can't spell right without rig. Can't spell right without rig, R-I-G. Oh yeah, he came up with that himself. Came up with that himself. It's a sore subject for me. It's not a sore subject. It's actually a moral victory for the Gallaty family. But brings back some memories I don't like to talk about. I haven't never talked about this much publicly. Brings a tear to my eye when I even think about it. But I actually ran for student body president. Kandi, this is a big deal. You would let that be right now. No, I know it's a big deal, honey. I know. Believe me. She's crying inside. I know how big it is.

Show us your crying face. Based on how you acted with rig in his election. Yeah, I know. I mean, listen, I was so excited for rig, just full disclosure. He wrote the speech. I wrote a speech for him. I didn't write the whole speech, but I said, here's a speech. If I was running again, I just wrote like bullet points for it. Rig looks at me and said, dad, I've already written my speech. Well, at least look at mine. I said, honey. Just look at mine. You need to simmer down. I said, rig's got this. That was the speech that would have won. He's got this. Yeah, if I could have gone back and said that. He's restoring what's a long speech. I had to write that one for myself. That was healing. Yeah. Can I bring that speech next week and just read it? Can I read that speech for y'all? Yeah, bring this up in your counseling session. No, I ran for, Exactly.

No, I ran for seat by president. I was not outgoing like rig. I was kind of like right. Rider's more laid back, but rider's probably outgoing more than I was, believe it or not. I was not a speaker, but then I learned how to do magic tricks, card tricks my junior year. I always wanted to be student body president. I just wanted to, and it was more like I wanted to redeem myself and prove. I went from a nobody and picked on. But I knew how to do magic. I had an ace up my sleeve and I played basketball, so I did have some connections there. And I went all out, man. I ran against five guys. Did you have a slogan? Didn't have a slogan, but I had a repertoire of tricks. So you were like, you were the musician that's gonna, Yeah, magician. I was going in and basically I took the little rings, you know, the linking rings, where you link them, you take them five apart and put them together. And I said, I'm going to link the freshmen with the sophomores and the sophomores with the juniors. And I linked them all together and took them all apart. And then I finished with a David Blaine trip

that he got from David Copperfield. Copperfield time, because Blaine wasn't even on the scene, but you may know it. I took this piece of paper and I just said, hey, whatever you come to me and tell me as a dream for the school, I'm going to make into a reality. And we're going to dream together. And I turned it and I rolled it into a paper rose, Vivian. And I basically backed up from the podium and I put the rose in midair. And it floated right in midair in front of the whole school. And the kids are screaming, you know, there's a bunch of boys, all boys, Catholic high schools, that they were going nuts. And then the way the trick was supposed to work was, I was supposed to take a lighter out, light the lighter. And in my mind, I just thought it'd be cool. I was going to use a Zippo lighter, which is where I went wrong. I should've used a Bic lighter. Because once you, note self, once you light the Zippo lighter, it's lit. You shouldn't be lighting a lighter in school at all. And I will say that the thing is that the rose was hanging by some contraption. I won't give you the whole secret, but the rose was hanging by a contraption that didn't do very well with fire. I will say that. So the deal was I was going to take the lighter,

light the piece of paper, which was like a flash paper. It was going to blow up. You've seen David Flaming do this, blow up. And when your eyes blinked for that millisecond in my hand, where the rose was, was going to be a real rose. Paper rose to real rose was going to be, yeah, switch it. But you couldn't see it because of the flash. Well, what happened to me is when I went to go get set up to get the ready for the real rose, I moved the lighter without looking when I turned around and broke my contraption to. suspend the rose. So then I have to in the moment improvise in front of 700 guys in a basketball stadium. So I came up with this idea. I was going to put the lunch. Don't try this at home. I was gonna I was gonna balance the lighter on this hand. I was gonna hold the rose on the outstretched fingers. The blighter was gonna be in the palm and I was gonna sandwich them together and then put the rose together. Anyway, it didn't work like it would, but I still want, but I didn't win by enough because I had five guys. So I went into a runoff. I went into a runoff against another guy. I'm not gonna mention his name, Ashley. But anyway, sorry. Oops. I thought you said it was a guy. It was. Oh yeah, I told one other story. But anyway, so I ran against this guy, this guy with no disrespect. But back to time, he was the he was the school bookie and he was a drunk alcoholic. Okay, his family were big involved in the school. Anyway, I'm not bitter. I'm just saying, as you can tell, I'm still not bitter about it. Just clarify. No, but anyway, long story short. So we do that. We do the runoff and the two other guys that ran were my friends. So I thought I had all the boats. I didn't have to do another thing, but we did a runoff. And the second time we ran, we didn't have to sign our names. We just voted, which I thought was kind of odd. And so as I was leaving the school, or they got to the last period, we get to the end of the day and they announced that they

announced the winner of the vice president, you know, secretary. They get to the end. I'm in chemistry. I still remember where I was sitting in the front, by the way, I don't know why I had that front seat. But anyway, I know what? Can you say focus? Yeah. Yeah, that front seat, Mr. Miss Gloria, I think your name was in. They said, Miss, the student by president for 1994 is Ashley Perry. And dude, I'm talking like I didn't I didn't even I didn't even I would leave. Did you get up? No, I was stunned. I couldn't leave at first. Everybody's like, what just happened? I was like, I don't know. So anyway, I walked down to the principal's office, because I was, I did the announcements, I was connected with the administration. I was like, just for clarification, how many votes did I lose by this true story? He said, four votes, seven 800 students, I lost by four votes. Now, I didn't know math very well. But I knew math well enough to know that's that's probabilities pretty. That's a rare probability that would have. So as I'm leaving school, I'm leaving was right before spring break that year. And I look in the back of the present president of that year's truck was Ashley's suitcase in his truck going to spring break, and I knew they were best friends. Fast forward two years later now, so I don't get the presidency he does he gets a scholarship to LSU. I go to William Carey, my mom always reminds me you would have been you wouldn't have gone that route. So God's good. Anyway, not better. But here but here's point two years later, Vivian, I get a call my sophomore year, Jeremy and I were friends this time, Jeremy remembers this. And I get a call a girl I dated in high school actually calls me and says, I just left the frat house. Ashley and the guy the year before Friday brothers at this bro. This is crazy. I know. Both were drunk at the party. And they said, Hey, Shana, didn't use the day gala years ago. And she said, Yeah. And and Greg, this guy leans over to Ashley says, that's the dude you cheated out the election. And she said, What? And he said, Yeah, he said I gave him the key. It's true story. I gave him the key. He went in you beat

I hope Ashley does good. My main concern for us is he knows Jesus. Jesus. So right. I think the moral of the story is just when you think you're down to nothing. God is always up to something. Amen. Here we go. We're talking about temptation. Speaking of temptation, not the group. No, we're not. We're picking up a temptation candy. But when each person is tempted, here we go. What? Where are we at? Same place we were last week. What? Matthew six, 13. Oh, 14. And do not bring us into temptation. No, no. But each person, James one, but each person is tempted when he's drawn away and then tucking up and enticed by his own evil desire. Yeah. If you just picking up last week, if you missed last week, this part two, it gives birth to sin. Yeah. Yeah. It gives birth to sin. Okay. James is that right? Yeah. Kind of, but it's been a while. Okay. We'll give you the three fold process of how sin works. You're going to want to lock in here. This is, we're going to do it rapid

fashion, but this is how sin works from start to finish the process of sin. This is the game film of Satan, of how he tempts us. Number one is this, we are drawn away, the text says, or lured. That's interesting, okay? We are tempted or drawn away or lured. Look for the hook. Yeah, we're gonna call this one, Robert, look for the hook. Let's make sure. How to look for the hook of temptation. So that is a hunting, that is a wildlife term for baiting a trap to lure an unsuspecting animal. Now it could be a trap in the woods, but I like fishing, I'm not good at fishing, that's why they call it fishing and not catching. Can I get an amen? Amen. Jeremy knows. But the word enticed here is a fishing term that means to lure by bait. And the purpose of bait is what? If I put bait in the water, a fake plastic bait, what am I trying to do to the fish? Try to catch it. Trying to lure it away from safety, and I'm trying to catch it, okay? Do you like to fish, Adam? I like to catch fish. So I like to go with a guide who knows exactly where the fish are so that we catch as many as we can,

and then we go back and eat them. Stella likes to catch too. Stella likes to fish, yeah. We have not caught a fish yet. We caught a turtle, remember? That's true. Well, you need to come over. We're gonna get, she actually, in her defense, she said, we're on the way to church, she goes, can we go to Pastor Robbie's pond? I was like, wow, let's go here first. And then we're about halfway through, I was like, shit, I went to Robbie's. Do you know, just full disclosure, I know we've gotten off on a lot today, but we have a new addition to the Gallaty Farm. We have a black USDA cow named Mabel. Did you know this, Vivian? Mabel, yes, Mabel got dropped off. Now, I don't know how long Mabel's gonna make it. That's what I was about to say, is this a- Mabel's not my cow, she's just living there, but she's the sweetest thing in the world. We already named her. She's pretty. I don't know what's gonna happen to Mabel, but anyway, okay, so you come fish. Okay, here's the thing about fishing. Two things have to happen with fishing to be successful. Number one is you have to lure the fish,

and number two is you've gotta hide the hook, okay? In order to, so you gotta know, one, where to fish, and number two is you gotta hide the hook. So you've gotta know how to pull fish, in this scenario, or this illustration, out of a comfortable hiding place, and so we have to find the right bait to interest them. You have to understand how Satan works. Satan is not gonna waste a temptation on you that doesn't draw you out. I tell people, he tailor-makes temptations just for you, just for me, okay? He's not gonna come to me and try to tempt me with something that's not gonna tempt me. Like, for example, I could relapse any moment, I get it, but cocaine today, I'm so far removed. Somebody comes to me and says, here's a bag of cocaine, it's not gonna tempt me today, by God's grace. Somebody comes to me and says, here's some heroin, because I know about that. This does nothing. No, I know, I'm just knocking for fun. Go ahead. He was just kidding. Just kidding. Just joking. Anyway, so, but taking credit for something, pride, trying to act like it's my, you know, those kinds. So he tailor-makes the temptation for you.

The second thing is, he hides the hook so you don't see it. Why, what do I mean? He doesn't want you to see the consequences of your sin. Sin always looks fun for a season, right? Well, that's good. The fish does not see the hook, and neither do we when he grabs us. And the reality is this. If you knew what sin really was, and the consequences sin had over your life, and the effect it has, you would never sin, okay? Perfect example is this. I heard years ago of a middle school principal who was, he was trying to stop young middle school girls. They would put lipstick on their lips. They would go to the bathroom, and instead of like kissing a piece of paper or wiping, they would kiss the mirror over and over again. And so they leave all these kiss marks on the bathroom mirrors. And so one day he kept telling them to stop. He threatened them. Nobody would stop. Well, one day he invited all the girls into the bathroom, and he said, girls, I'm gonna show you how to stop. We got Rigg on the phone. He's calling. Okay, tell him we'll call him back. We gotta. Well, I'm not gonna answer right now.

Okay, we're almost done. I must have heard we're talking about him on the podcast. He must be calling to tell me. Tell you on the podcast. Okay, but anyway. So the principal calls the girls in who were doing the kiss. He didn't know who they were. But then he asked the custodian, come on in, and I want you to clean the mirror in front of the girls. Well, instead of turning the sink on and getting the scrub brush wet, he goes to a dirty toilet stall, Vivian. He puts the brush in the dirty toilet stall, and then he cleans the mirrors with the brush from the toilet water. Problem solved. They never saw lipstick marks on the mirror again. It was amazing. It was amazing. Here's the point. When you're tempted to sin, if you could only see the real filth that you're kissing, you would never be attracted to it. Period, never. Number two, sin leads to disobedience. So the first thing is sin begins with deception. He deceives you He he basically Takes a bunch of dog poop and he puts icing on and sprinkles around it You're still doesn't matter how you wrap it how you coat it. You're still you're still in. Yeah, it's nothing good Okay, number two sin leads to disobedience

James says then after desire is conceived meaning it it kind of has its way Then desire gives birth to what to sin and so the two elements are here bait and Desire when those two are joined together They birth a baby called sin now But it doesn't stop there because once sin like you said last week you're past the point of no return Then sin ends in death So that's the progression sin begins with desire sin leads to disobedience and it always ends in death When sin is fully grown it leads to what death now, it's not just physical death Although obviously there is a sin unto death first John 5 We won't talk about today because we'll get off track but sin regardless if you're living in sin We've all been there before it brings a death like existence Hey want to make you aware of two resources that I think could help you in your journey The first one is obviously the forgotten Jesus It's named after the podcast or actually the podcast was named after the book if you're enjoying some of the things we teach on the podcast You'll really enjoy this book I go from Old to New Testament Things like was it a real rooster that crowed in the garden or in the courtyard when Peter denied Jesus hint? It wasn't We talked about why Jesus rode in on a donkey and why that's connected to Solomon and other things like that If you're a leader in the church, or you know a pastor personally or a church that needs help with disciple making This is everything we have learned over the past almost 20 years in replicate. It's called the movement ready church We have a Venn diagram in here where there are three elements that have to be necessary for you to create a movement of disciple Making let me encourage you to pick this up where all books are sold You've been there before you you don't you don't die, but you feel like you're dead You're separated from the power in the intimacy in the presence of God Yeah, I think that's why as you always talk about get into the word to the word gets into you it's so important that we're in the Word of God because we will get comfortable in darkness, so it's like if we right now if we turned all the lights off a After a few minutes our eyes would adjust Yeah, and then when you flick that light on it take us a second, right?

And we wouldn't be able and a lot of times we spend so much time living In in I don't know how to say they're not the Satan's world, but we're so much we spend so much time Participating in the things that are against the Lord or away from God we get comfortable in darkness. Yes We don't even realize that we're constantly being baited. We're tempted. We're living that way Desensitized we're desensitized to it. So that's why it's important important to have a daily time with the Lord It's important to be hearing the Word of God Standing at a Bible preaching church on Sunday morning where the Holy Spirit can say where's the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is the flashlight that walked into the darkness and goes. Hey, you can't see that but I can And we all need that in our life or we will stay stuck in that comfortable spot where and that I can tell you There's been a couple times like, you know, Josie. Oh, we're having our talks whatever and she'll go Hey, I want to tell you about something and she'll say it and I'll be like, whoa now you've talked about this before about Seeing what I don't know how you put it seeing that we we know of or omission Yeah, like omission and omission like, you know, I didn't even know what to do, but don't do what's going on She's like, yeah this I don't know if you've seen this, but this I saw this and hey, you know think about that I'm like, oh my goodness. I didn't think about that. That's good I didn't even and then my first response is I got to make this right. Don't even make amends I need to so I think it's so important that that's why it's so important. We get into the word It's so important that this podcast is so important and we're hearing teaching We have accountability because a lot of times we're living in this this cycle and we don't even know it because we've come used to It. Yeah, it's like I don't know, you know, it says death but you can you get comfortable when you're dead? I mean you get comfortable in the enemy's world because I live that way for a long time Well, the only way you come back to life I mean only thing dead only the only way dead can come back is if something Initiates upon the dead person to come to alive or resurrected and that's what the word does It brings dead things to like the Spirit of God brings death to life. That's why the word is a map in a mirror It's a map to live obviously how to live life, but it's a mirror for your soul. It's constantly Calling out correcting convicting things in your life that you may not see otherwise, but not looking into the mirror of the word Yeah, well you do this with you talking you taught us this as a church and a staff all of it the practicing of silence You know, that's why it's so important to say Lord search me. No, no test me

and sit and say, God, really, here's my heart. What do you see? What do you want me to change? What do you want to come out? Because you can't spot self-deception yourself. Like I said, I can't see the back of my head. Same thing spiritually. I can't see. Unless you have a mirror. Unless you have a mirror, right? And God, that's what the Holy Spirit is. And that practice of that, and so one thing I've started doing is I started taking this, I've got some of the scribbles here. I'll take this notebook, just so I can stay laser focused with the Lord. I'll set it right next to me, and anything comes to my mind that I need to do, I just write it down. I just wanna, I'm trying just to empty myself of any kind of distractions, so that I can focus on, all right, Lord, what are you saying to me now? What, you have my full attention. I want you to perform heart surgery. He's a spiritual heart surgeon. I want you to perform spiritual heart surgery on me on a daily basis. If not, I'm gonna be living in the dark. Dude, that's so good.

It got me thinking, yeah, what you're doing, what you're describing is, Candy does too, you're not being reactive, you're being proactive in your Christian life. And so many Christians are sitting in the backseat of their Christian life and reacting to things, but you're saying, no, I'm gonna sit with the Lord daily. I'm gonna saturate my mind with the Word. I'm gonna listen to podcasts and sermon. I'm gonna be a part of it. I'm gonna be proactive. It's kind of like the difference between being on the offensive or defensive. When you are up, most teams that are up with two minutes left, lose the game because prevent defense is not offense. You're just reacting and trying not to mess. We need to be on the offense all the time. And we need to be mindful of the things that cause it to send. For example, I read about a guy a while back, he was an overweight businessman, decided to go on a diet and he told his staff, he said, listen, just keep me accountable. I wanna lose weight. He loved donuts though. He probably could have been great with donut December. But he loved donuts, but he decided he was gonna avoid the donut shop. Well, one day he comes into the office

and he has a box of donuts, a box of donuts in his hand. And the staff said, what in the world just happened? And he said, man, you're never gonna believe this. He said, I accidentally drove by the bakery this morning and there in the window was a whole box of fresh donuts. And I felt like this couldn't be an accident. It's not accidental that today at this bakery in the window. And he said, so I prayed, Lord, if you want me to have this box of donuts, let me find a parking spot in front of the bakery. And he said, sure enough, the eighth time I drove around, the eighth time I made the block, there it was Brian, right in the middle of that front row spot. Here's my point with that. You can't wait until you're in front of the computer screen to start dealing with the temptation of pornography. You can't wait until you're seated at the bar stool behind the bar to start dealing with alcoholism. You can't wait until you're yelling at your kids to deal with the temptation of rage. You can't wait until you're already sending Facebook private messages to an old girlfriend to stop an emotional affair. Here's the thing, sin always follows a progression and you need to understand the progression so you can stop it. That's what happened with David too. If you look at the life of David with Bathsheba, David is on, just like Adam and Eve.

I would say, Candy said, it's looking, desiring, and then. It's what you see and hear. See, desire. Delight, desire. Or delight, desire. Take, invite. Yeah, I say, she looked, she longed, she lusted. Once you look at it and then you long for it, then you lust over it. That's what happened with David. He looked at this innocent woman bathing on the roof. And the second thing is he lingered. I was gonna say, lingered is before longing. Then he longed for her. She was very beautiful. Then he lusted for her. Then he took her. And then once he took her, then the whole thing capitulated. The snowball effect. Yeah, snowball effect. And then he kills the husband and everything. So here's the thing about sin. It always takes you further. I'll finish with this. It always takes you further than you wanna go. And here's the point. I remember at Brainerd, there was a dad who comes in my office. I'd only been there about a year.

He was weeping. I mean, this guy was weeping. He had like a 19-year-old son. Great kid in the student ministry. Good kid. And he came in and he said, pastor, I need help. He said, the FBI just kicked my door down last night, middle of the night. And they arrested my son. Took him, took the computer. Now this is like 16 years ago. So it's not like it is today. Like this is more common today. But back then, I was really new to this. I mean, there wasn't like YPD and all that, you know, cops episodes like that. He said, they kicked the door down and they arrested my 19-year-old son, took him away in handcuffs. He's in jail. I said, what is he in jail for? And he said, they said they found hundreds of pictures of minors in pornography, child pornography. this computer and phone. And he said, Robbie, what happened to this kid? He's a good kid. He's a sharp kid. He's an intelligent kid. How did it happen? Well, we prayed for him. He didn't know he came back. Months later, kid was going I mean, it was big. He went to jail this kid. Yeah. And here's what he said. It started with a curious look at like a Victoria's Secret site.

That's what it started with just a curious look at a lingerie site. And then it moved to something else. And then it moved to something. The guy doesn't wake up one day and say he says to himself, I'm gonna cheat on my wife, I'm just gonna go to my wife. No, it starts with a look, then it's a lingering, then it's a longing, then it's a lusting, then it's an acting. So here's what the thing, if you look for the hook, and you nip it in the bud early on, then you won't have this fallout down the road. Yeah, well, you talked about this often, all the armor to fight the enemy is in the front. You think about the breastplate of righteousness, all the armor is for the offensive. There's no armor on the back. No true. It's because you're going forward in the battle. You're not retreating. You're not getting protected by retreating. And David, that passage starts out I can't remember the exact scripture. It is the chapter. No, no, no. Second Samuel. Second Samuel. This says in the days that kings went out to war. Yeah. Where's David? David is supposed to be going out to war on the offensive fighting for his kingdom. Like you're supposed to. And what's he doing? He's sitting up in his house doing nothing. He's not where he's supposed to be. He's resting on his laurels. In the Christian life, there's no standing still. You're either going backwards or you're going forward. Why? Because the enemy's always, he's always trying to lure us. He's always trying to entice us. There's always something to look at or grab or taste or whatever it may be. We have to be moving forward on the offensive, fighting against temptation. If we don't, our enemy's right there. Exactly. That's good. All right. Candy needs to go. I'm sorry, guys. I've got three minutes to call.

When Jesus says lead us not into temptation. This is the line worth the whole prayer and it makes sense. What he's saying is, lead us not means to lead us not to succumb to temptation. I learned this. I can't remember Scott McKnight or somebody share this. This is a great way to think of it. You're praying lead us not in succumbing to temptation, but delivers from evil. That makes so much sense because why would God lead us to temptation? No, lead us, lead us in a way. God, let me follow you so I don't, that's a better way to say it. Let me follow you in a way so I don't give into temptation and then delivery from the evil one. That's what I think he's saying. So just be encouraged. Uh, keep following the Lord, keep getting in the word and trusting God and watch what God can do. So that's powerful. That's a wrap. Subscribe and leave a comment too.
