S8E10 - The King Raises The Dead
insignificant on the service, small passage of Jesus healing a boy in the city of Maine. And we're going to learn how to read the Bible to make the Gospels come alive by understanding who Jesus is healing, where he's healing the mat, because geography is theology, and what he does in order to see that Jesus is not just an ordinary rabbi. Jesus is the Messiah of the world. [Music] Welcome to The Forgotten Jesus Podcast. I'm your host, Adam French, where you learn about the real Jesus from the Bible. I'm here with Pastor Robbie Gallady and Candy Gallady, both biblical communicators, authors, and Robbie's the pastor of Long Hall of Church, the founder of Replicate Ministries, which we have a conference coming up for that for Replicate. You want to talk about that? But I want to do something Vivian reminded us of. Okay. She said, "Hey, I'm sure everybody knows Vivian from the podcast. She's candy stand in." That's right. That's right. Jeremy is Adam stand in. If Jeremy ain't it is not in Ben's the backup. But Ben's this is shot. Ben had his one shot a few weeks ago. No. Yes. What do you got, Ben? What did you get? Poor Gabe. Oh, that's wrong. We were down to Robert actually was getting on and it literally was sitting in the chair, I think, and then Angie, and then it was down to Robert and Angie. I was like, "All right, Lord." And I love Angie and Robert, but I'm like, "I got to do the inner circle. It's the top of me anyway." But anyway, they could have done great. But Vivian said, "We need to let people know if you don't have a church home or you want to join us online. You can go to longhollow.com or you go to Long Hollow app or Long Hollow YouTube, and you could join us every Sunday. And by the way, at this taping, your sermon is up.
Mad at Mercy. Mad at Mercy. Jonah. Let's go. Jonah, man. It's going to be awesome. We also have, we also have- Actually, we got to say it like it was in the past tense because it was awesome. It was awesome. Yeah, it was amazing. It was, yeah. You mean, how can Jonah be so bad? Yeah, Jeremy was good too, right? Yeah, Jeremy was. Oh, he just came back for Jeremy. Yeah, I didn't think that. No, but we have online groups too. I want to say that. So, you can go and watch online and then you say, "Well, I want to find community." Well, we do have online life groups as well, and any time you're watching a service, just put in the chat, I need prayer. I need to go deeper in the world. I need a group. I need to stop-ship anything. We have people that are managing that, looking at that. Vivian will reach out to you and make sure you get connected. Any biblical questions you may have about baptism, salvation- And people push back on that list, and I'll tell you the crazy story. People push back on, particularly older folks. Well, how can you find community? You should be going to the church in person. You know, you can't do that.
So, my mom and dad, late '70s, early '80s, both my parents, you would think there's no way they would do this. They have watched religiously since COVID. COVID threw them off. They didn't want to go back to the physical church, so they started watching online. They literally have watched every week online. They leave immediately at the 8 o'clock service and go join a virtual life group by Zoom. And Vivian will tell you, and Ben knows this, but literally anywhere from 16 to 26 people will join from all over the country, all over the world. Canada, California. She said, "I just want you to say the Chattanooga life group." Oh my gosh, say my name. Just say the Chattanooga life group, so. And then you're ready to do this? Then they do virtual de-group every week. My mom's on Tuesday. My dad's on Wednesday every week religiously with a group of women and a group of men. So, people say, "You can't now." Occasionally. And then they do get together. Yes. Yeah, once a quarter, once every couple of months they get together. They're all made up here. Or they'll come here. You know, and so, yeah, it's not the same, but it's close for them who, you know, my mom, they don't always-- They love their group. Everybody in that group love each other.
You know, people have pushed back on video or livestream. I say, "Listen, you have no problem getting the news on your television." Doesn't minimize it, you still get it. And listen, think about-- The median doesn't minimize the message, right? Exactly. I mean, think about the fact, the word of the Lord. I mean, it came to us on scrolls, and then it eventually came to us-- Right, we don't hear the-- On the Biden-- Look, he's gonna do it. That's good. And I'm like, "It was a black guy." That was done. That's a good one. Nobody says, "This is a printed copy from Crosswood." No, they say, "This is the word of God." I'm like, "If anybody, if anything, should um, teach us that, it was COVID." Do you know what I'm saying? When there were, you know, situations all across our country where sometimes you couldn't physically go to the church building that you would normally meet in. And you're gonna tell me that the Lord doesn't work through us. Hmm. Ain't nobody telling you nothing. You know what I'm saying? Like, you can't say that. Like, you're telling God he can't do something? No. Mm-mm. I don't think so.
How many times have you cried watching a movie? Mm-mm. Right. Exactly. How many movies is you won't forget? You want a live performance. If you have to anybody say, what's your favorite movie? Ah, what's your favorite movie? Ah, I mean, like... Yeah. Now, I'm not saying neglect growing if you can, but you can't also say that God cannot work in that mode, that's not true, you know, so... That's good. Mm-mm. There's no place to go. Well, like Brother David, my predecessor, you say the message never changes, but the methods have to change. That's good. And we're living in a new day and age where Stella and Jojo and J.R. and Rig and Ryder, they're in a different age. Yeah. That's right. So, all right. Let's just hit Matthew 811, but I really want to get into the meat of it because the meat is going to be, and you need to strap your spiritual seatbelt in for this one. This is going to be... It's a classic case of me studying this week for this podcast thinking, "Is there really anything here?" And then at the end, like, "Lord's like, 'Hey, listen, big boy, you just keep doing your job?
I got this. You just keep digging. Keep digging with me. You keep digging and watch. Because this looks like a benign, simple, nothing-here passage, and wow, God took me to the mat and I tapped out on this one." Okay. But let's just read Matthew 811. I almost wanted to answer this question, but for time, I don't think I'm going to do it, but I was going to ask the question, "Is Israel God's chosen people?" Look at Candy. She's on her. And then I'm going to tell you why. I'm not going to answer it. I'm not going to answer it. I'm not going to answer it. I would say yes. They are God's chosen people, but it's not normally what you think. But let me show you why I was going to answer and ask that question. Let's read Matthew 8. Look at Geddy. She's all nervous. There we go. I'm not going to do it here. Let me be a whole other podcast. People want to know that, but a lot of young people want to know that today. But let's just read why I would ask that question because Matthew 811 really messes that up. Because remember, last week we talked about the centurion, who's a Gentile, who's far from God, who is, "Could Jesus heal?" What are you doing healing this man?
What are you doing helping this man? And then Jesus says on the heels of that, "Let me tell you the truth." What he's saying is, "Don't miss what's going on here. News flash. Read it." Verse 11, "I tell you that many will come from east and west to share the banquet with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the sons of the kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth." And Jesus told the centurion, "Go, as you have believed, let it be done for you." And his servant was healed that very moment. Okay. This is very interesting. What he's saying is, okay, east and the west, okay? So what was east, Persia, what was west, Rome, Spain, Turkey, Asia Minor? What are those reasons? Jew or Gentile? All Gentile? It was not non-Jew. So what Jesus is saying, they were not ready for this. This is where they start saying, "All right, this dude ain't who we think. This can't be the guy." Because Jesus says, "Let me tell you, just like this man who's far from me came close, you better be prepared." Because I didn't come just for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob's descendants, I came from those from east and west. Basically what he's saying is code word for Gentiles, and then he says, "Just as this man has believed, let it be done for you." And his servant was healed that very moment. Isn't that interesting?
Jesus is associating Gentiles with his Messianic kingdom, which they thought the Messianic kingdom was for one group. Who was it for? The Jews. The Jews. Okay. Now, this is why I was going to say the question. I'm not going to go into it because we don't have time. But some would just say, "Well, this is replacement theology. The Gentiles replace Jews." I don't believe in replacement theology at all. I don't think the church has replaced Israel in the sense of God does away with Israel. I think God has a special place for Israel. They're God's chosen people. But chosen, you're ready for this, does not mean salvation. Because not all of you are of Israel, Paul said. Just because you say your father, Jesus said, "You say your father's Abraham." I don't know who your father is, but our father's Abraham. Jesus said, "Doesn't he matter who you are." If you don't believe, you'll perish too, basically. So the point Jesus is saying is, so what I like to say is continuation theology or continuous theology, not replacement theology, meaning the Jesus fulfilled. And here's what I mean. This is my point. Jews don't get a special pass, this is what you've got to understand. They don't get a special pass. Because this is where revelation and end times really falls apart. You've got to understand this. And I don't mean offending by it, but this is the reality. There's one way to heaven.
That's right. One way to heaven. There's not a two-part system. I've heard even preachers on But God has a special place for the Jewish people and God's gonna deal with them separately. Well, separately, meaning they better believe in Jesus as the Messiah if they're a New Testament believers and they better believe in the coming of the Messiah. Old Testament, it has to be Jesus. - And it's all faith. - And it's all faith, right? And Jesus even said, I didn't come to replace, I can't, or abolish, I came to fulfill. Okay? So I call it fulfillment theology. Jesus, the New Testament church fulfills with the promise of the Old Testament. Meaning the Old Testament saints are no better than New Testament saints. They're all level at the cross if they believe Jesus is the Messiah. And the key word, again, I don't have time to go through it, but chosen does not mean safe. Here's what chosen means, I'll go through it real quick. Chosen means God has decided to give you extra or favor. God has decided to select you and give you a front row seat. You're not the only person in the arena, like for example, this was a wall right here, if you're picturing a wall, and I'm writing a message on the board,
and we're in a dark room, and I have one little light bulb, and the little light bulb shining on the board, and you're in the front row. And you have a jersey that says Jews, okay? Behind you would be like the Romans, behind you'd be the Persians, behind you'd be the Syrians, whatever. They're still in the arena. Meaning they could still see the message and respond. They don't have the favor, they don't have the illumination, they don't get the front row seat. God chose Israel. Why? I don't know, he said it was nothing in you. But election does not mean salvation. That's a whole nother problem with Calvinism, by the way, as most people think election equals salvation. Election is always corporate for the Jewish people. It was never me, it was always we. Probably need to do a whole podcast series on this, but salvation, so election people say, God elect you. Yeah, God says Jacob, I loved Esau. He's talking about the nation in a sense, 'cause Jacob represented Israel. But anyway, I don't know. - I have a question. - Oh, you gotta hit your thing. - I have a question. - Oh, here we go. Okay, before Abraham, okay, God, or at the time of Abraham,
what would the nation have been called? What would the Jewish people have been called? Trick question. - Before Abraham? - Yeah, during Abraham, like Abraham is called to follow God. What would they have been called? - Nothing. - Exactly. - Well, they were like, what was Abraham's special? No, he wasn't. Oh, in Jerusalem. - Okay, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding. - No, that's the point. - That's the point. - That was good. - That was good. - That was pretty good. - Before. - I'm trying to stop me. - Before. - What I'm saying is before there was stuff in me, Joseph, you'll be a while. - I'm just gonna take over. - Well, the thing is, I'm not my point. - I got a question now. (all laughing) - I got a question. - The point being, like. - What you're saying is they're grabbing onto an identity marker that doesn't even go back to creation.
Because prior to Abraham, how did you believe? You still believe by faith. - We should know from the fact that God chose Abraham all the way from the beginning to come from Ur that the Gentiles would have been included. Even from way back then, because eventually Israel is a person first, then Israel becomes a tribe. Like the tribes of Israel, you see? And then it becomes what we know as a nation later. You see, all the way back, when Abraham was called, Abraham was a person, and there was no term Israel. There was no term Jewish nation yet, or Jewish people. - Yeah, the way Jew actually comes from Judea, or the Judeans, Judea, 'cause that was the tribes. It was a long story, but the 10 tribes get exiled from Assyria, 721, and then you left with Benjamin and Judah left. And here's what's crazy, you wanna do a study on, you're talking about Jewish descendants in Israel? The 10 tribes that left in Assyria never came back. You find them, just search Google. The 10 lost tribes of Israel, they never came back. The only two tribes that came back were Benjamin and Judah, which they called them the Jews for short, Judah. But here's an interesting, Paul addresses this for study, if you want context, Romans nine, six through eight. Paul says, for not all who are descended from Israel, belong to Israel. Wait, what, wait a minute, Paul, you're meddling here.
Nor, because they are his descendants, are they all Abraham's children. What he's saying is, doesn't matter who your daddy is, physically, if God's not your father spiritually by faith through the Messiah, you're a children, he says, of the flesh and not children of God, but you become children of the promise, if you are, you're counted as offspring. Children of the promise, you're counted as offspring. So anyway, I don't wanna go into it too much, 'cause I wanna get to where we got to next, but here's the point of all I'm saying is, there's one way to God. There's one way to the new heaven and the new earth and to in the presence of God. And it's always the same. Prior to Jesus coming, atonement of God in a man. Us, New Testament believers today, anybody after the cross resurrection, ascension, we look back to the man who died on the hill of Calvary by the name of Jesus. And if you have any other way, you're putting your trust in, you don't have peace with God. I don't care who you, I don't care if you're the most devout person in a religion. I don't care if you're the most committed, Torah, observant person in Judaism. It doesn't matter if you're a person, read your Bible every day. If you don't have a personal relationship with Jesus, if you're changing religion and not relationship, you have no peace with God. And I don't think pure faith can be forced and pure love. And you may say this in heresy, but it's like, could be like, we don't know if Abraham was the first guy that God came to. I mean, because you could be just somebody else.
Somebody else have an opportunity to be rejected and rejected him, you know, because true love, like a lot of time happened for Abraham. I mean, the greatest, to me, the greatest ethic in life is love, right? And to have real love, you can't force it. It has to be chosen. Yes. And then the obviously the opposite side is that if you want to have love, then you can also choose hate, right? You have to have the opposite and so you can choose to reject God. And so, you know, I love your analogy of how close they get and God gave them that opportunity. But to force like Josie, like, if I, well, you know, I had to do some convincing. But if I was, you know, a lot, I lost it. You didn't bring us to the table. Let's be honest, you and I know what it's like. We know what grace is like, because they had everything and we had not much. We did this. I'm a lot of debt, a lot of hurt, a lot of hands. I'm waiting, a waiting trial. Oh my gosh. Here we go. In jail, furloughed out a jail with no money, negative bank account. You need Josie, Mary, you need money. No. And you need, no, you didn't have no money. You needed money. She got me out. Hey, you talk about set the cat is free, bro. It's true love and that true love. Yes. That's what I'm saying.
That's the woman I stay by your side. That's right. Because if she'll marry you like Candy, when Candy married me, I was a master. I was a mess. But here's the thing that's grace, though. You are still a mess, honey, but you're loved for the Lord. That's what got me handy. But well, no, no, that's why, again, we don't have to talk about it. That's what Jewish culture has no problem with Calvinism or mini and his. I'm like, we in Western American descendants of Calvin and Luther, we're looking at it intellectually right, you know, black or white, they have no problem with God chose them and I responded. Why? And because they can hold two apparent contradictions and tension at the same time. So when the text says God chose you before the foundation of the world. No one comes to the father and says, yeah, amen, but when Jesus says, Hey, anyone's who weary and heavy-laden come to me, you'll have rest. That's not a puppet. That's a person who has to do it. Anyone who believes has eternal, that's a belief, right? And that's what you're going to say about Josie. What makes love love and that's what makes it special is the fact that when Josie sent love to you, you reciprocated the love back to her in return. And what makes her feel special is the fact that you and I for candy too, we could love a million different options in the world. And we have chosen, just like them, to send their love and affection toward us. OK, if there's no Adam couldn't say to Eve, man, I married you because you were the best looking girl on Eve would have said, Adam, I'm the only girl on planet earth. Right.
It doesn't land well there, but that's what makes, see, that's what makes following the Lord so amazing is that you have, in a sense, a buffet style of options to choose from Hinduism, Islam, Hare Krishna, Jehovah's Whitney, you have all these options and you respond to God's love by choosing him rightly, personally. And that's what makes it so amazing. OK, if you want a question, that's one question. You got a question, listen, so are you saying that like Jews could say, I believe that I'm chosen, but I can reject him, or they just say, no, I were chosen no matter what we do. OK, that's a great question. No, that's the big problem with Jesus. That's what Jesus is battling the whole time. They're trying to, and we'll get to this more, especially in John 6 and others, they're trying to say, who are you? We go back to Abraham. Jesus said, before Abraham was, bro, I am. Yeah. OK, what they're trying, yes, see, they're, you got to, this is why we sell the time. Jews in the first, yeah, this is pretty crazy. We don't think this way. Jews in the first century did not think about going to heaven. You got to understand this. That is, that is a, that is a more recent, I could say it's dispensational. Oh, it's more present day. I'm going to secure my spot in heaven. That is not a hebraic Jewish Middle Eastern concept. They did not think that way. That's very Western American new, new world, new development going to heaven when I die. They were concerned. You go to the new earth and the new heaven on earth, the new earth on earth.
But they believe that when they died, they would go to be with God because they were Jewish. They were God's chosen people. And what Jesus is trying to do and Paul in Romans 9-10-11, what Paul's trying to show them is, and even in Romans, just because you're circumcised, Romans 2 doesn't mean anything. Circumcision of the body was a picture of circumcision of the heart, bro. What are you talking about? You missed the point. Yeah, you missed the point. And therefore, if you don't have peace with God, if you're not reconciled to God, Romans 5-1, you don't have peace with God. And if you don't know Jesus, you're still under the condemnation, but those who know Jesus have no... He's talking to a religious group of people in a sense, and Jesus' whole message is, just because you could say your father's Abraham, but if your father's not God, the father, and you believe in a Messiah, it doesn't matter who you are. So favor is just, "I'm showering my love and affection upon you." Okay, again, the natural question is, Paul says, "All Israel will be saved." That's the big sticking point, and we know that all Israel will be saved. When Paul used the term Israel, he's not talking about the nation-ethnicity. He's talking about Israel being the people of God. Now, how do I know that? Because Paul talks about that in other letters and Galatians, Paul talks about it in Romans again, when he refers to the people of God as the nation of Israel, meaning from the seed of Jacob. We got to move from a nation tribe, ethnicity, blood type, and move to what he's talking about, which is basically a people of God. Would you say it's a faith type? Which by the way, it's not a blood type, only it's a faith type. It's a faith type. Right, that's exactly right. Faith DNA. There you go, which goes back to the very first promise. "I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you so that," everybody uses this to show that, you know, and I would say, Israel is Jews or God's chosen people. It doesn't mean salvation. "I'll make you a great nation, I will bless you, but I will bless you, make you great so that you can be a blessing to all peoples or the Gentiles." So the goal of me giving you divine favor was so that the world Jewish people, Israel, would look at you and say, "Tell me about your God." Not, now we see it today. I don't want to get into geopolitics, but we see it today as, "We're better than you. We're holier than you." You guys missed it. I don't care what you are, but if you lived that way, that's not the plan of God from Genesis 12,
and that's not the plan of God in the New Testament. Anyway, okay, we're done. Caden, how you like that for a geopolitical Old Testament explanation, and we'll get a lot of emails and lose a lot of listeners. Maybe gain a word. No, no, no, no. I hope you see. We're trying to read, we're trying to see. The point is nobody gets to pre-pass, that's it. Yeah, nobody gets free. You got to believe in Jesus. There's no free pass. There's faith, period. Okay, let's get back to Matthew where we wanted to go to the now. Matthew 7, we're going to talk quickly about this for time, but let's just read Matthew 7. Back to 7. Matthew, I mean, sorry, we're in Luke. Luke 7 11, because Matthew, we're going to leave Matthew for a moment, and then we're going to go back and forth between Matthew and Luke. But Luke and Matthew, we're going to tell a lot of the same accounts, but this is one that's only in Luke. Okay, sometimes Matthew and Luke are side by side, but this one is only in Luke, and this comes on the heels. If you're following your harmony of the Gospels, which you're going to want to use this if you're following along every week, harmony of the Gospels, CSV version, tells you the next account in Jesus's life, section 56, Jesus raises the widow's son to life. Here we go. 7, 11 through 17. Okay, you're only going to read one verse, so get ready. Okay, afterward, he was on his way to a town called Nain. His disciples and a large crowd were traveling with him. Okay, remember when geography, just remember this line, geography is theology. You got to remember that. Okay, well, we're studying Jesus now, we're going to start getting into his travels. Where he does a miracle is as important as what he does and who he does it to. So when Jesus performs a miracle, you're asking three question. Where is it at? Who is he healing? Meaning is it a, is it a widow? Is it a Shumanite woman? Is it a woman from tier inside and whatever? Is it a blind man? So where, who, and what, what is he doing? Okay, where, who and what? Where, who and what? That's your guess. Okay, so first of all, where is Jesus? It says right out the gate. He's in the town called? Nain. Okay, so let me give you a little geography. So let's start off where. Jesus is traveling through the hill country of Moray. Moray, or Mora, is south of Nazareth and then 18 miles east of Mount Carmel. Now, we remember, now this is cool in our church because we just finished reading Elijah and Elijah. So you're going to love this right now for those at Long Hollow because we're reading through the Old Testament together. So. and how many prophets? - Well, total?
- Yeah. - 850. - Well, 450, I think is the-- - It was, I can't mean it to tell you this other day when you were preaching on that, by the way. - It says 450. - It says 450 of Astra, I mean 400 of-- - Astra is 400 of-- - Are 400 of Bail and 450. There's two numbers, it's Bail and Astra. So it's like over 800. - There you go, okay. - Which makes it even more awesome. - So 850 versus one. - And then that sermon I talked about here is if God's in your corner and he's only one, you're always in the majority of the minority, okay. So Mount Carmel, he calls down these prophets. Okay, so that is 18 miles to the west of Mount, or the hill of Moray, or Mora. Now, when we go to this area, you find the ancient city, there's two hills, adjacent one another. On one side, you find the ancient city of Suleim, okay? Which is the ancient, I'm sorry, you find the city of Suleim, which was the ancient city, Shunaman, or Shunam. You're gonna love this. Shunam, it was on the south side and it was on the slopes of Mora.
Now, you remember, Elijah is gonna go to a woman from Shumah called the-- - Shumonite women. - Shumonite woman. - Or woman. - Woman, okay, I think she is a widow. Shumonite woman, and he performed his most famous miracle there. - Yeah, that was in our, that was one chapter that was not in our reading plan. - I know, I know. - I think we might should have addressed that. - Well, I read on it a lot too. - I read on it, I read on it a lot too. - You know, many people believe, or rabbis believe, that that was Jonah. Have you heard of this? - No. - That the, I mean-- - The little boy? - Oh, what? - Yeah, I think it was Jonah. And-- - How do they get to it? - 'Cause I'm gonna sit in a joint like crazy. - Okay. - And then-- - I wanna get up top, but no, there's, yeah. - I didn't know that. - And they believe that he was a understudy of Elijah. When he sent him, yeah, I won't. - There's a lot. - That's fascinating. - We mean, you know, this is what we love,
that we really love. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. - It's a lot of stuff. - That's interesting. I need, are you saying that's in the sermon now? - I may mention it, I may mention it. It just depends on time. - So if you have time, yeah. - But yeah, you know how it is, you know how it is. - Well, I have a lot of grandiose ideas on Monday, and by the time I hit Sunday, it's cut. - Yeah, yeah, somebody sent me, you know, we do the commentary thing, like you tag everybody, "Hey, give me your thoughts." - Oh, that's fun. - And somebody sent me an email of like five different things, and I literally had all of them in, but I took 'em out for time. - No time constraints. - I take four pages single space, but that's just the way I preach. I preach a little different, fourth page of single space. Okay, so he performs the most famous miracle of Elijah for the Shumunah woman, which he raises this boy from the dead, okay? Now, time period here, it's been about 900 years since that miracle happened, 900 years before. But back then, you know, that was a big miracle to raise someone back to life, you know, to, in a sense, resurrect, to raise someone back to life. So you have to believe it was still a legend in the community, so much so that people took pride, scholars believe, because it connected their town with the Old Testament Hebrew Scriptures, so they're very proud of that. It's like coming to, you know, Nashville,
home of country music and all Bachelorette parties in America. - Whoa, scratch this one. - No, no, no. - That's what we known for. We're the Bachelorette. - I'm the one, I don't know. - They don't know what's for it. - If I see another girl in Boots and Cowboy Boots from Boston, I'm fine, I really know, y'all are welcome here. - Mm-hmm. - If you come, come to Long Hollow and see as a church. - Just don't run a bus. - Okay, don't make sure. - Go ahead. - Don't pet all a blackened, but anyway, okay. So directly across from, so you got this one side of the hill is the Shumunah woman that you can see adjacent to the other side of the hill where we find the city main, and this is important. The city name, or Na'im in Hebrew, comes from the Old Testament passage of Genesis. Can he go to Genesis 49, 15? This is when Jacob is going to see this area, you're gonna love this, and describes the area that he sees. Now I wanna see if you could figure out what the word name, or Na'im in Hebrew means. - Okay, 15, you said? - 15, just read 15, yeah. - He saw that his resting place was good and that the land was pleasant. - That's it, that's it.
- It's one of those words. He saw that the resting place was good and the land was. - Pleasant, no, it's not even. - So Na'im is the Hebrew word Na'im, which means pleasant. - I was gonna say, can't be rest, 'cause that's Noah. - Yeah, yeah, that's not exactly. Noah's word, Na'im means rest. - Okay, both of them are in Noah, Na'im, interesting. - Noah, Na'im, okay, yeah. Yeah, that's cool. Okay, first, well, I don't know what that means, but that's cool. - No, I'm just saying, we're both in Na'im's, like Noah means rest. - Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. 'Cause the Hebrew, we miss a lot of the Hebrew 'cause it's rhythmic, but we do. Okay, go back to verse 12 of seven, seven, 12. And let's pick up the story. So now we know the city, now I wanna introduce you to the person. So now we know where, let's see. He was his mother's only son and she was a widow a large crowd from the city was also with her Okay, let's stop here. So the the the encounter heightens Really in heightens. Why Ben. Why is this? What is the tension? You got to put yourself in here like a movie If you don't just read these words, you got to slow down enough to put yourself in the movie so Jesus takes his disciples Uh from hearing a healing a Gentile and now they're going to the city of nane Which was close by and all of a sudden they see all of a sudden a few there's a funeral service going on what? And then they they ask who's the funeral for you know, Matthew who's And what do they say Ben? It's a mother and her what?
only Only son and she's a what a widow Okay, tell me what's happening here Connecting the dots of the Old Testament. Well, this girl. This lady's in a bad place. Yeah, she has no one left She is in a world of trouble Her husband's dead She has no other kids And her only son Just died That's a bad place to be by the way. Okay So she's no she she's got nobody She's the she's you know, she is the the widow who's Uh, who needs God to step in and take care of us. So Jesus enters the city. Okay. Let's paint the six year Jesus is going to be met with this procession of followers. So let me describe the Uh, the funeral service of the ancient world Uh, the the the followers would start or the procession would start with paid mourners most of the time So they actually paid people to come to your funeral For a week it would last about a week to hold process and cry and mourn and wail On the on the payroll Contract labor in a sense. It's the way it was even if you didn't know No, especially if you didn't know No, no, this is true Some countries I think still do this to this day where they get people that they come telling you that it I'm almost certain there's a they would pay or I don't know if they still but I know it was not long They would pay a lot longer. They would pay people to come and mourn and cry They wanted to set the tone like to express what they were feeling Yeah, they were like paid as to a show of like showing like how big the loss was It's a big deal. Oh, look at all these people crying, you know think about like if like if someone's so passed away You see all those 50 people while they only had 10 people there crying though. You know, it means like
It's a little different though. I'm gonna tell you why but here's the thing Um Why was god? Why did god want you to stop everything? I mean, I tell people funeral a funeral or death in your family Is god's spiritual brake pad to get our attention in life? What does that mean? It doesn't matter who you are doesn't matter how rich you are. It doesn't matter how wealthy you are. It doesn't matter How successful you are famous you are If you have a family member or a close friend that dies your whole life comes to a halt Right everything stops and you go pay homage and respect to the mom or the dad or the sister Whatever and I tell people the the best thing god does at funerals is he causes every person near and far To come face to face with their own mortality You got to come face to face that one day you're gonna die and god is god and you're not Right, that's what death does so they had these mourners And so god's there's a big deal about dying and the whole town stops and so the mourners would go first following the mourners There was this uh, hebrew word bear or be there v-i-e-r Which was a wooden wagon that would literally carry the corpse and it was normally an open casket So there were people either pulling or pushing the core the corpse and according to their custom The women led the procession with the men carrying or pushing behind okay professional more i'm sorry Procession of mourners. I said came in front they followed the women. Let me rephrase it Women came first. Okay. All the women crying obviously Then the the beer then the men then the mourners then the musicians They even had hired musicians that would come out and they would go to this procession. Okay, uh with this procession Everybody was buried outside of the city limits. They did not bury the body inside of the city limits So the rabbis even considered Uh escorting a dead body part of one of the chief commandments of the jewish culture In fact, there's even uh, there's even a response here in barracote 18 That says wherever you are and whatever you're doing in the city The entire city has to shut down And every person whether you know this person or not has to join in the procession. Did you know this?
It says, who ever sees a corpse being He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their maker But what if he does accompany the dead then what is the reward? Ravai asi says or asi says to him applies the passage Proverbs 1917 he who is kind to the poor poor soul in this case the dead body Lens to the lord and he will be rewarded for what he has done So even though, okay, so here's Jesus now put all that in context Jesus is a stranger In a sense. He doesn't none of the disciples know anybody from name. Nobody's from name They go back to the city of name. Okay, and as they're walking up the town. It's on the it's on the side of a hill mountain They are met face-to-face with it with the procession now knowing the culture What is Jesus and now we know who what or where now now what what is Jesus supposed to do based on the culture follow along with the procession Jesus join in right get out of the way in a sense move out of the way Because they have the right away and then circle back around get in line with the procession Stop what he's doing and join the people all the way until the cemetery Okay Everyone is expected to participate in this Regardless of what they're doing in fact the town mood or the oral tradition said Even if you studied Torah because remember studying Torah was paramount to everything Even if a person was studying Torah Torah They were required to interrupt their study for the sake of escorting this dead body. So Jesus approaches this woman And he realizes she is in a horrible condition And the text says in verse 13 read 13 Jesus is going to have some kind of Feeling for this woman that's going to change everything It says when the Lord saw her he had compassion on her and said don't weep Then he came up and touched the open coffin and the pallbearer stopped and he said young man I tell you get up
The dead man set up and began to speak and Jesus gave him to his mother. Okay, stop right there. Ooh So horrible situation Woman's in a bad position. The bible says Jesus had compassion on her and because of that he performed the miracle Not necessarily for the boy You got to remember this the miracle is for the woman Yes, the boy comes back to life obviously, but Jesus's compassion is directed to this widow who can't take care of herself Now, what do we have here? We have the convergence of Elisha and Elisha's ministry and one miracle in this city Why because if you remember Elisha, we just talked about this raised the shamanite woman's son from the dead But if you also remember Elisha did the same thing with the woman of zerapah When he raised her son from the dead as well Jesus is there this is crazy in the same region bro. It's crazy. No, it's just gonna get him better So just hold on Jesus is going to this region where they know the legends they know the stories they know the the scripture and they know That Elisha greatest prophet Elisha second to one second to the top, you know, you got LeBron and Jordan Jordan first Obviously lehoo lehoo Exactly, okay now watch this so he raises and they say wait a minute We know these miracles. Okay. Now. Here's what's cool Picture what's happening. We don't give this in text. Let me draw it for you in your mind Jesus comes to town. He's got a caravan of guys 12 at least and him They come face-to-face to the procession head-on And instead of acquiescing to the cultural etiquette of the day. What does Jesus do? Jesus doesn't get out of the way. He stops the procession head-on The disciples you have to imagine are the back like what's good? Oh, no What's going to happen now? He didn't walk up with the mother He's always other than to the boys. He's always, you know, we're gonna get to it in John six when the crowds big and the passing out the You know po boys with tilapia fish po boys and bread and All of a sudden the crowd and Matthew's looking around Judas like man We got a following now. We're gonna be able to fund this ministry and Jesus like hey If anybody doesn't eat my flesh and drink my blood you can't be my disciple Yeah
So what the record Okay, and so that's what he's doing here. So he's head-on now the boys know the cultural scene And they're probably freaking out thinking Jesus. What are you doing? You making a whole scene the whole the whole town's out bro The whole town's there name the town of names on the county. They're all out there now in order to understand what Jesus is doing Are you ready for this? You got to understand the culture Jesus' day according to the Talmud. It said there's only two times Two instances and that's it. Everything else, uh, subjects themselves to the procession. If a person dies, you're studying to her go. Uh, if you cook a food, it doesn't matter. Okay. There's only two times. The first one is this, when a woman or a bride was on her wedding day with the, with the bridal procession, that took precedent over the funeral. So she could continue as she was coming out the, you know, the celebration. And that makes sense. What's the second one? You ready for this? Take a wild guess. According to the rabbis, and I haven't written here, according to the rabbis, the only other time was when the king of Israel arrives on earth. Jason, watch this, the rabbis taught, and I quote, one should require a funeral procession to stop, to make a way for a brighter procession, and both a funeral procession and a brighter procession should stop and make way when the king of Israel comes. Wow. Pete, see, this is the thing about this, well known, you think, like what people know that of course they knew that, of course, they knew that I'm going to show you what and I'm going to show you how I'm going to show you how I'm going to show
you how I'm the text and just second question. Jesus stops and nobody says, Hey man, get out of the way. They're stunned because you got to understand, it would be like somebody burn, you know, doing something crazy, running your car into the gas station through the whole building. Everybody stops like this, dude. This is crazy. You're stuck. That's how these people respected the culture, especially a rabbi. Yeah. It's like somebody driving for, you know, how they turn their lights on, like when you're following a funeral. Yeah. And then when somebody just flies by and they don't pull over. Right. That's a great point. You said that you don't, you're supposed to go wrong with this. Why is this going over? Okay. You see that you're like, God, yeah, okay. That's a lot of words. But I'm saying they never did this. Yeah. So Jesus confronts them. He comes to the boy and he says, rise up. It's time and the boy arises. Now the next line again is the best connection or cashier or remes to the Old Testament. And this is how we know Elijah and Elisha are connected to Jesus. Jesus says this line, Adam, go to 1 Kings 1723.
Candy, I want you to read what happens verse 15 and read 15 to the end. Watch this, Adam gets first. The dead man set up and began to speak and Jesus gave him to his mother. Okay. Say that again. Jesus. What gave him to his mother and hold on verse 16. Hold on then, then fear came over everyone and they glorified God saying a great prophet has risen among us and God has visited his people. Hold on. Say that again. Yahweh has come to his people. And the report about him went through all of the vicinity of the region. Okay. Watch this. How do we know? So it's a great prophet. First of all, how do we know it's a great prophet? The exact same language in the Greek Septuagint, which is the Greek, which is the Greek version of the Old Testament. Literally, if you take Candy's line, she just read verse 15 and you put it in a parallel fashion to 1 Kings 17, 23, it reads verbatim, the same. Read first. Now 1 Kings 17, 23 is Elijah healing the woman. Watch this. Then Elijah took the boy brought him down from the upstairs room into the house and gave him to his mother. What do you do? Same exact line. Why?
Because, and he says, see your son lives. So here's the point. Your son is alive immediately. This is why we got to study this Bible. Like we were doing in this podcast. Many people have read that Vivian, you've been my whole life, my whole life. Caden, I've never seen that because I don't know the culture. I don't know the context. The people in the crowd would have gotten it immediately. The light bulbs went off and they said, wow. Elijah, Elijah and Messiah connected in the same person. And they witnessed this local legend in a sense. This story from 900 years, a thousand years ago, reenacted before their very eyes. And they say, wow, this prophet has risen coming to us. But not only that, God, Yahweh has come to the earth and the news spread. Okay. I'm going to lift you with the click, click the vanger for next week. I can't wait for next, I've been waiting for this one for a long time. The next two weeks, just strap in the news spread all the way down to the dead. That Jesus just raised somebody from the dead and it winds up in the dungeon prison of Herod Antipas to the ears of a man named John the Baptist. And John the Baptist is going to ask a question that had. Are you the one to come? Or should we look for someone else? And I'll give you a hint, it's not what you've always been taught. - Wow. - And that is good today. - If you want to wonder, is there a God? Look, I mean, there's no way you can make this stuff up.
I mean, Jesus is Lord. - People always say, when did Jesus say he was God? Or how did he prove that over and over and over? Everything to manhead, I'm going to show you. It's like a thousand times in the gospels. - So good, so good, powerful. Well again, thank you so much for joining on our podcast today. We would love for you to become a part of our team.
