God Cares Less About Success Than You Think | Exodus 4 | Crossroads Daily

Faith, it requires action and God is looking for people who are going to step up and eventually he's gonna be like, all right, you've said no a lot. So like, my voice is gonna get a little quieter in your life. Ooh. This is the Crossroads Daily. No experts, no perfect people, just honest conversations about what happens when the Bible shows up in real life. Hey, I'm Chuck. I'm Sierra. I'm Chris. And this is about the calling of Moses. And, you know, Moses makes all these excuses, right? He's like, I can't speak well and you can get somebody much better. And God just like is patient and was like, no but you're the one I called. You're the one I called. He kind of makes accommodation for Moses. And at some point he's like, Moses, come on, we gotta get moving here. But I know what that feels like, you know, thinking about a place in your life where you have maybe been called to something but you felt totally unqualified to do it. Anybody got a story like that? Yeah, I do. And I actually think that I responded in a different way than Moses.

I feel like sometimes when God calls me to specific things I go in with way too much confidence. Like, got it, got it. Yeah, I'm awesome. I will be awesome at that for sure. And that's just my personality. Like I like the new fun adventure, like the challenge. I will crush that. And then I get into it and I'm like, oh, and maybe not. So a couple of years ago, well, actually it's been like five years ago now. My husband Cameron and I felt very specifically called to foster care and had a lot of like really weird, very specific things happen to where we knew that that was the thing that God was calling us to. And I did, I was like, God's calling us to this. We are going to crush it. We are in a really great spot in our life. We're like young, we've got a lot of energy. So we said yes to taking teenagers, babies, like whatever. And we had three foster kids for about a year. And when we got them, their ages were eight, 13 and 17. Wow. And it was, yes, let's just take pause for the reaction. Yes, yeah, I was 28, I don't know. Yeah, so in the, I'm going to crush it just so quickly once we got those kids. One of the hardest things we've ever done and something that God very specifically called us to and gosh, just feeling so unqualified in so many areas.

Like why did we think that we could parent teenagers? We've never even parented babies, like it was just crazy. Let alone teenagers with a lot of trauma and baggage. And we saw God show up, whether it was through other people walking us through who were parents of teenagers or people who had experience in children who had suffered from trauma or resources or whatever. And somehow we made it through that season and had a lot of joyful moments too, even amidst the hard. I love that story. And it makes me think of, if you've been around church parts you've probably heard this quote, God doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called. And that's true and wonderful, but I think your story is a great example of what we want that to be though is that he qualifies me before the call. For sure. Versus what is often the case, which is he qualifies me during the call. Part of that qualification is realizing how unqualified I am, right? So there's this, I don't get to have all of that before I go into the situation. Sometimes I'm getting on the job training, right? On the call, on the calling training from them, right? Oh yes, yeah. Sounds like that was that experience for you. Oh yeah, and we even think back now of like,

oh man, if we only would have known what we do now, like can we start over and do it over, we would have- Now you might crush it. Yeah. Right? Now I am qualified, yes, oh gosh. That's good, that's good. How about you guys? A time where you were called to do something or right now maybe are called to do something for which you feel unqualified. A few years ago, I created this like digital magazine with a creative partner and it was solely to fulfill a space for something that I didn't feel like existed and it was great. One of our articles ended up going viral and there was a woman, like a famous author that reached out to us. She was like, I want to get you guys materials, like cameras, and I want to like purchase like an LLC for you guys. And at the time I was like, wait, this is just for fun. Like, like, wait, this was just like me doing something out of like the joy that I have in creating. But now we're like signing this stuff for like the LLC and like months later, we're like, oh, like we have to file all this stuff.

Like, wait, the stewardship. I was just not ready. Yeah. So it was like fun and cutesy in the beginning and then I was like, oh wait, this is for real. Like this is going to take more for me to actually do this well and steward this well. So. What'd you do? Stewarded it well. Awesome. Yeah. Heck yeah. I stepped into this challenge. All right. Yeah. Yeah. You weren't going to say that. You were just going to be like. I'm not. I'm just going to cut to the chase. What happens next year? I'll tell you next episode. What'd you learn? What'd you learn from that? That I can do hard things. No, I mean, I don't know. It was just, it just stretched me. Like, I don't think I realized, I'm very type B. I don't care for logistics.

I don't care for any of that, but it just taught me so much about a skillset that I didn't have that I needed to equip myself with for things that I wanted in the future. So it was really helpful for that season. Yeah. That's cool. Yeah. I think there's probably some examples in the last few years, but like, I think of that question in the totality of my life, I have been and am very risk adverse in a lot of ways. Like, don't want to do something that I'm not good at. And so like, there's not been a lot of times I've felt unqualified for something because I haven't even been in a position to like potentially be unqualified for it. And that's, I read that scripture and like, God talking to Moses and being like, you're gonna be in my mouthpiece and Moses keeps pushing back. And I actually love that like, God gets mad at him. He's like, dude, like I am telling you, I'm gonna do this for you. Like, all you gotta do is kind of show up. And then eventually he's like, all right, fine. Aaron's gonna do it. Like, you said this this past weekend, Chuck, like faith, it requires action. And God is looking for people who are going to step up.

And eventually he's gonna be like, all right, you've said no a lot. So like, my voice is gonna get a little quieter in your life. Like, you're gonna be hearing that. And that was like, most of my life, a lot of no's to God or not even hearing him. And then God's like, all right, like, cool. Have it your way. Like, you're not gonna have a very adventurous life. Like, you want life to the full that I'm offering, but you're not putting yourself in a position to even receive that uncomfortability to begin with. And so it's like, I've been successful in a lot of ways in my life, but not a lot of risks. And that doesn't lead to growth or adventure or fun or anything like that. It doesn't. And it takes, I mean, this is why I love the opportunity of being a father. Because as a parent, you learn this. Like, if you don't give your kids challenge and difficulty, they will be underdeveloped in some way. There'll be some aspect that they could be more developed and they won't have it if you just keep making them. The great example I think of is like when a kid's learning to walk. Like, man, if you catch them every time they stumble, it's gonna take them longer to learn how to walk. Some of what they learn, they learn from having to get up.

Some of the muscles they're even developing that they need for walking happen from getting up from the fall. And I think that's a spiritual principle for us too. So this is interesting, because we're talking about calling. And it's just a reminder to me that like, we care about results. We wanna win all the time. And I'm not saying God doesn't care about winning. I'm not saying that God doesn't care about results. But I don't think he cares about it as much as we do. I think God cares more about formation. He cares more about who we're becoming than he does about us finishing the particular test. Yeah, he'll get us to the finish line. If God's called you to do something, follow through. You know, if God called you to steward that thing, you stewarded it well. That's absolutely God's will that we steward things well. But I just think, man, he cares so much about our formation in the process. He's willing to actually have us fail at something if it's gonna form us in the way that's to our benefit. Yeah, well, now we're parents now to two biological kids, a toddler and a baby, which comes with its own set of challenges. But man, we are so much better parents even for the two babies that we have. And we will be so much better parents for them

when they're teenagers going through some. the same stuff that our other kids went through because we learned and because God formed us in the process and brought us closer to Him through that too. Which is His ultimate goal, right? It's all about relationship. It comes back to, God wants us to be in it with Him. Whatever it is, He wants us to be in it with Him. Yeah, be in step. One, two step, like serious. One, two step, here we go. Everybody, one, two step. Awesome, that's right. Hey, whatever it is for you today that you are stepping into or maybe have been reluctant to step into, it is true that God doesn't call the qualified as much as He qualifies the call. And so let Him shape you, let Him form you because He's good and He's trustworthy.
