Okay, so this Sunday, Pastor Rob's gonna lead us into a series called Rise Above and he's gonna actually start it off. And I'm so excited about the next couple of weeks. We've been praying into the series. We've been praying into the season of the life of the church for weeks and I'm so excited that it's finally here. It's the fall. There's some incredible things happening.
Shore Fest is starting and there's an incredible collection of talks that's lined up one after the other. And I'm very excited about that starting. But tonight I wanna just pick one verse from this book of Judges and the story of Gideon and I wanna show you something that I've never seen before in my life. It's Judges chapter six and verse 34 and this is what it says. It says, then the spirit of the Lord came on Gideon and he blew a trumpet summoning the Abiza rites I think. What do you think? What do you think that word is? It's no wonder this nation has died out. Well, nobody would remember them, I'm kidding. But the Abiza rites or the Abiz rites or the Abiza rites, however you wanna say that, if you know how to say it correctly, let me know, okay? I'd love to hear but this is one of those that not even the internet knows how to pronounce it but you can figure it out. But here's the point, okay? The spirit of the Lord comes upon Gideon and when the spirit of the Lord comes upon Gideon, he blows the trumpets, he does all these different things. And it's very interesting. This phrase here, the spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, that come upon Gideon is actually a Hebrew word which was a very common Hebrew word
that everybody knew in the original language. It was labash. And labash was the Hebrew word that meant to put on your clothes. So in the morning you woke up and you labash your clothes onto your body. So you got clothed with, right? So it says that Gideon was clothed with God and he blew the trumpet, okay? So the people of God is in trouble. I'll let Pastor Rob tell the story but the people of God is in trouble and God raises up Gideon to freeze people. And in that moment when God raises up Gideon, it says that the spirit of the Lord came upon him and God clothed, God was the clothes that he put on top of Gideon. He clothed Gideon with himself, right? So it's actually the other way around if you wanna read it correctly. It doesn't say that Gideon was clothed with God. It says God wore Gideon like clothes. So God fooled Gideon and clothed himself with Gideon. So God clothed himself with Gideon and God says, okay, I'm gonna clothe myself with you and then I'm gonna fool you and you're gonna do amazing things. Now, I love this because this is amazing. It's like God's saying, listen, I'm gonna put you on as clothes.
It's like a hand being placed inside of the glove and suddenly the glove becomes powerful, right? The glove doesn't have power of its own but because the glove is clothed over the hand, the glove becomes powerful and it's the same thing that God does with Gideon. He says, listen, Gideon, I'm gonna come and I'm gonna wear you and together we're gonna do mighty things, right? And it's just like that glove. It's like suddenly it had power. Suddenly it had the ability. to do things because God put him on. It wasn't the suit that gave the hand power, it was the hand that gave the glove power, right? It wasn't the clothes that gave the person the power, the person has the power and they put them on. So God clothed himself with Gideon. It's a fascinating verse. So God puts on Gideon and he wins a great victory. And I read that verse and I say, God, would you put me on? I wanna feel what it feels like when God clothes himself with me. When he comes and he puts me on like a garment and he moves through me for the people around me and for the things that he wants to do in our day and he actually clothes himself with me when he comes and he puts me on and he does mighty things through me. This is pretty cool.
But you've gotta understand that God didn't clothe himself with Gideon because Gideon was something amazing. In fact, if you read about Gideon, then what you'll read is that Gideon was actually struggling. He was a little bit unsure and he was struggling through things. And here's the thing, God doesn't clothe himself with qualified people. God qualifies unqualified people and does mighty things through them. And maybe you need to hear that tonight. Maybe you don't feel qualified for the giants in your life, for the enemies in your life, for the struggles in your life, for the challenges ahead of you. Let me tell you something. If God clothes himself with you, you are mighty plenty for whatever's ahead of you because God is able to do great things. And I'm reading this and I'm saying, God, would you clothe yourself with me? See, but it's interesting if you read the story of Gideon because there's a lot of people in the Bible that weren't exactly willing garments for God to clothe themselves with them, right? So sometimes we're not that willing for God to use us. We're not ready.
Have you ever tried to put clothes on a two-year-old? Okay, let me just qualify. Not just any two-year-old, a two-year-old boy. Have you ever tried to clothe a two-year-old boy? Okay, but I mean, it's a fight. By the time you've got one arm in, the other arm's out, and when you have the arms in, the legs out, I mean, it's like you need four hands to do this job, right? It's an impossible task. And I think sometimes God is trying to clothe himself with us and we're an unwilling garment. We don't wanna go on. We don't wanna fit on. It's like, is it Doctor Strange that has a cloak that has a mind of its own? I kinda think we're a little bit like that. God wants to clothe himself with us, but we don't wanna be clothed with God. We're so busy with what we're doing. We're running here, we're doing that. We're busy with that. We're saying, God, maybe not today. But I'm reading about Gideon and I'm saying, God, make me willing to carry you. It's like water being poured into a glass and the moment that the water gets poured into the glass, the glass gets filled with the water. And I'm saying, God, would you fill me with yourself? Will you pour yourself into me? Would you allow yourself to come
and fill me to capacity and beyond? Would you come and pour yourself into me and would you use me? Would you clothe yourself with me? Would you take every part of my life, every breath that I breathe, every moment that I have, Lord, and like Gideon and others in the Bible, would you use me? Lord, would you do mighty things through me? Lord, would you reach my family through me? Would you serve my neighbors through me? God, would you help me come closer to the people in my streets or in my neighborhood? Lord, would you minister through me? Would you use me to proclaim your word and to love like you love? Would you come and fill me with powers that I might pray for the sick and see them healed, that I might do good deeds, that I might know things that I didn't know, words of wisdom and knowledge? Lord, would you come and fill me? Would you come and give me supernatural ability to overcome the natural challenges of this world? Would you fill me? Now, it's interesting if you read about the judges and you find this pattern in the book of Judges, but actually throughout the entire Old Testament, this pattern is very clear. God fools a person for a moment. God fools a person with enough power for the moment.
He fools the judges. And if you go read the book of Judges, you'll see that he raises. up a judge and the judge gets fooled with God, God puts them on like a glove, God clothes himself with Gideon for a specific task. But when Gideon does his task, what happens is, I was gonna promise that I'll clean that up, but I'm sorry. But what happens is he pours himself out, he does his task and then the vessel is empty again. Have you noticed that? Have you seen in the Bible that God raises up a judge for a minute, he says, I'm gonna fool you up, I'm gonna give you the ability, I'm gonna make you ready, I'm gonna get you ready. And then that person goes, he does his task and he pours himself out. And before you know it, the job is finished and so is the anointing, so is the strength, so is the supernatural ability of God in that person's life. God comes upon them, he raises them up, they deliver Israel, they pour out what God has poured in and it's over, they're empty again. They're normal again, they just go on with their lives. They fill themselves up, they do their task and it's done. God fills them up, they do what they're supposed to do and it's over, over and over and over again, this pattern repeats itself in the Old Testament.
It's almost like God is trying to make a point. And what is the point that God is making? God is making a point throughout the Old Testament that his spirit came upon people for a moment, for a task and his spirit came upon some people for a moment, for a task. But then he comes in the book of Joel, last book of the Old Testament and there's a promise. He says that my spirit will be poured out upon all people. My spirit will be available to everybody, right? And then Jesus comes and Jesus actually makes a promise in Luke 24, verse 49, he tells his disciples to go to Jerusalem and to wait and he says, stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. Go to the city until you've been clothed with power from on high. Interesting, the word clothed appearing again, by the way, exactly the same word that we read earlier but this time the other way around, go to Jerusalem and be clothed. So God clothed himself with Gideon and he did mighty things but this time it says, go to Jerusalem and wait because you will be clothed with power from on high, you will be clothed with God. And we know the story, right? So if you go read Acts chapter two, you'll read about how the Holy Spirit gets poured out in verse 33, it says, exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the father the promised Holy Spirit
and has poured out what you now see. The disciples are going, listen, look at all these people, the 120 was waiting and now the Holy Spirit has been poured out into all of these. Jesus changed what the Old Testament was full of which was God filling a specific person for a specific task, for a specific moment and then leaving again. No, in the New Testament what happens is what Jesus said was gonna happen. He said, I'm gonna come and I'm gonna come make my home with you. I'm gonna come and I'm gonna clothe you with power from on high. I'm gonna come and clothe myself. I'm gonna clothe you with me and you're gonna carry me, right? It's no longer just the Holy Spirit coming for a moment, for a task, raising up the judge, judge sorts everybody out and then it's over. No, no, no, God comes and he makes his home with you. That's different, that's awesome. I don't think we fully grasp how amazing that is. God comes to make his home with us. But maybe you're a little bit confused as I was at this point in my preparation because the New Testament is actually full of instances where people are being clothed with God and I read in Judges that God clothed himself with Gideon and then I keep reading and suddenly it says,
well, God go to Jerusalem and wait and you'll receive, you'll be clothed with power from on high. If you go to Galatians 3, verse 27, it says for all of you who were baptized in Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. So which is it? Do we clothe ourselves with God or does God clothe himself with us? Which one of the two is the right answer? Should we be saying, God, would you clothe yourself with me and use me like a hand in a glove? Would you come and allow your power? to dwell in me and I'll be clothed with you." Or God, should we pray and say, God would you clothe me with yourself? Would you clothe me with power from on high? Would you come upon me? Would you close? I want to be clothed in Christ or is Christ clothed with me? Does it matter? Maybe, maybe not. Because the one is power from within and the other one is power from outside. And as I read this, I realized, well, I don't know if it's from within or from outside, but then I kept reading and I remembered in John chapter 17, Jesus praying and I want you to notice what he prays. He says, Lord, may you be with them. And Lord, I pray that they might all be one Father. Verse 21, just as you are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. And then he goes on in verse 23 and he says, I in them and you in me. So is it God in us or is it us in God or is it God on us or is it just God around us? Are we clothed with power or do we clothe God? And I realized that actually John 17 says, God, may they be one as we are one as I am in you and you are in me. And then I realized something. It's not whether we're trusting God to fill us up or trusting God to clothe us, that's the point. Because in actual fact, it's not just that we're full, we're actually immersed in God. And the glass is in the water and the water is in the glass. And I want to tell you what's true about a glass that is immersed in the water, that glass never runs out, never runs empty. There is no limit to His power and there is no limit to us because the reality is we've been placed
in Him and He's been placed in us. And yes, we are clothed with God, not just for one task at one time and one issue. No, He came and He made His home with us. Don't you know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit? You are the residence of God on planet earth. You are the place that God dwells in Austin, Texas. You are the place of His dwelling. You are the container of His power and we have this power in earthen vessels. It's like jars of clay that is filled with the glory of God so that when they look at us from the outside, they don't see the jar, they see the treasure inside. And God doesn't just fill you up with a little and then you pour yourself out. No, God fills you up and He invites you in and you are in God and God is in you and you are hidden in Christ in heavenly places. But He lives in you. It's God in us and us in God. It's not whether we're clothed with Him or He clothes Himself with us. We get to be with God. We get to live in this life in relationship with Him. And maybe you're sitting here tonight and you're asking, but so what? Why is this important? Well, I hope firstly that you understand that God wants to be with you. He wants to dwell with you. He wants to have a relationship with you. It's not because you're qualified. It's not because you're great. It's because He is great. It's not because you chose Him. It's because He chose you and you responded to His choice and you said, yes, God. And now He wants to be home with you. He wants to be present with you. He wants to make Himself present through you. We are the body of Christ. We are the hands and the feet and the mouth and the presence of God wherever we go because God has filled us. He has clothed Himself with us and we have clothed ourselves with Him. And we are in Him, so there is nothing in this world, nothing high, nothing low, no demon, no angel, nothing far, nothing close, nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus because you've been clothed in Him, you've been hidden in Him. Whatever you're facing, He is with you in that circumstance. But there's a part of this that challenges me to pray and to say, Lord, will you use me? Because I don't know about you, but there are times in my life
where I don't feel clothed with Him, and I don't feel like He's putting me on like a garment. I am tired, and I am feeling inadequate, and I face things that I don't feel like I have the answers for, and I encounter challenges that's greater than me. And sometimes we need to be reminded of our position where we are hidden in Christ with God. Sometimes we need to be reminded that we need to pray and say, God, use me in a mighty way. 1 Corinthians chapter 14 and verse one says this, it says, pursue love and desire spiritual gifts. Desire spiritual gifts. Desire God, would you use me? God, would you fill me? God, would you, like the prophets of old, Lord, like the judges of old, Lord, like Gideon, would you come and would you, in a mighty way, come and empower me to make a difference in the world? Desire spiritual gifts. Desire for the power of God to make manifest the presence of God in the world you are in. And I wanna take a moment tonight to pray with you, if that's your desire. If you've made a decision to be in Christ and you know that your life is hidden in Christ, and when God looks at you, He no longer judges you according to your sinfulness, but He judges you according to Christ that has clothed you. But you know right now that the life that you live,
you've lost the power and you're saying, God, would you come and clothe yourself with me? Would you use me? And maybe you're at this point that Paul writes to the church in Corinth and he says, desire spiritual gifts. Desire the power of God working in a mighty way through your life. So if you desire that tonight, if you're here tonight and you're saying, God, use me, I wanna take some time just to pray with you tonight. So if you don't mind just standing up right there where you are, if this is your desire, if you're saying, God, use me, why don't you just take a moment and just stand to your feet right there where you are? Lord, I thank you. That your eyes don't miss a single person tonight as they stand to their feet. And Lord, as we come before you tonight in a posture of receiving, Lord, we wanna pray with you come and fill us. Lord, whether we've never before felt your Holy Spirit fill us, God, or whether we felt it before and it feels like we've leaked. Lord, I pray for those, God, who have seen and felt what it felt like for you to use them in the gifts of your Spirit. Father, and I pray for those who are tonight standing for the very first time saying,
Lord, would you fill me with your Spirit? Would you use me? Holy Spirit, would you come fill us again? Lord, would you come and immerse us again? Father, would you come and remind us that we are in you and you are in us? Us in you and you in us. Lord, may we be saturated, may we be immersed, may we be filled through and through with the presence of God. Lord, may it be your power, Your strength, your thoughts, your words, your ideas, your passions that flows through our veins. Lord, may it be that the same spirit that was in Jesus Christ, that rose him from the dead, may that spirit be alive within us. May it empower us. Holy Spirit, would you come and would you set us up. Lord, would you clothe yourself with us and use us as part of your body. Lord, may our bodies be a temple of your spirit, a dwelling place for God and may your presence permeate into every part of our city as we live in those parts of your city. In Jesus name. We're gonna partake of communion together tonight. And it says that on the night that Jesus was betrayed, he took the bread and he said, this is my body that is broken for you. He said, this is the wine, took the wine.
He said, this is my blood that was spilled for the remission of sins. And you know, I was thinking about that verse. You know, what's amazing about that verse? As Jesus is saying those words on the night that he was betrayed, moments before his death on the cross, and you know what he's prophesying, you know what he's speaking about, you know what he's proclaiming? He's saying my body will be broken, my blood will be spilt. There is no holding back, there is no shrinking back, there is a giving of himself freely. And may it be tonight that as we say, God use me, God fill me, that we remember that he took himself and he said, here I am for you. And as often as you gather together, do this in remembrance of the fact that he gave himself first for you. So as you give yourself to him tonight, may you remember that he gave himself for you so that he might be in you and you might be in him forever more. May it be that we have a tough time recognizing where he ends and we begin because we are permeated, saturated, immersed in him. Amen. May Christ be within you, filling you from the inside out, and may Christ be all around you so that whomever sees you sees Him.
