But there's no time like the present And there's no time like the beginning of the year Put God first in everything And see how everything else flows from that position So I really want to encourage you to do that If you want to use the giving envelope There's some boxes at the back The other ways of giving Shoreline.net slash give And the QR code is always available So feel free to do that as well So it was 1,400 years About 3,500 years ago 1,400 years before the coming of Christ That Moses was walking around in the desert And as he was walking around in the desert He ran into a burning bush Has anybody heard the story before? So Moses came to this burning bush And the context here is that The Israelites have actually been staying with the Egyptians Egyptians for some time They initially were guests of the Egyptians and then eventually ended up just being slaves of the Egyptians and right now the Egyptian the Israel like people the nation of God the Jews they're in a space where they're oppressed as slaves and crying out to God to set them free and It's this context that Moses runs into the burning bush and he has this encounter with God where God reveals himself to him But it's important if we want to understand the story that we understand a little bit of the context of the Egyptians You see the Egyptians had a God for everything. Okay, they had all these different gods

They didn't have the God they didn't worship the God But they had a God for every prominent thing in their lives, right? They lived in the desert and one of the most prominent things in the desert is the Sun and Ra was the Sun God right and the Nile was very important to them because it was their source of water and the Nile was a God and and There was a God of the harvest and the God of healing and all these different gods every prominent thing Every valuable thing Everything that they needed they turned into a God so they didn't have a God they had many gods many prominent important things in their lives were the gods of the Egyptians and so it is that Moses running into the burning bush when he gets to that point He has a conversation with God and this is the conversation It says Moses said to God Exodus chapter 3 verse 13. He says suppose I go To the Israelites and say to them the God of your fathers has sent me to you and they asked me. What is his name? Then what shall I tell them now? You've got to understand this makes a lot of sense right because Moses is amongst the Egyptians The Israelites are amongst the Egyptians Every God has a name rise the Sun God and and he's kind of just thinking he's gonna go back to them It's been hundreds of years. He's gonna refer back to God and they're gonna say well Which one of the gods sent you Moses and God replies and he tells me and God said to Moses I am Who I am That is what you say to the Israelites you tell them I am Sent me to you. Why because God is self-existence God-created the source of everything. He's not a God. He's the God He's the God that started everything else that they worship as gods And what God is saying is he's saying you might have all these prominent things in your world But I am the pre-eminent God I am I am

Saint you In our lives there are many Prominent things you have prominent things in your life. You have valuable things in your life You have things that you hold dear you you hold dear certain things in your life And those things are prominent to you and maybe unlike the Egyptians You don't call all these things God, but maybe like the Egyptians you treat them like gods Okay, it's a little quick to go that deep but just hang with me for a moment, okay, here's the thing is we Worship some things in our lives that isn't God because they're prominent in our lives Have you ever been somewhere where there was no internet reception and seen people walking around with their phones looking for? reception right there worshipping what is Worshipping is a strong word. They're Adoring what is Valuable to them, right? Have you ever seen people in a space for some of us? We build shrines in our houses around the things that matter. Have you ever visited a gamer and seen their setup? Okay, the shrine of the games right or the shrine the football shrines Have you seen some of the foot? Have you seen some of those people with a lucky football jersey that dates from whenever right? So what the things that are prominent in our lives we hold on to the prominent things and we value them We adore them We don't necessarily give them names like gods But we look after them in a similar way. We we take these things and maybe it's not that maybe it's exercises Or it's a hobby or it's what others say about you online How many of you have sacrificed a good mood on the altar of a comment on a online. Okay, just me. Right? How many of you have become hangry when you didn't quite eat when you were supposed to or you're going through your 21-day fast at the beginning of the year and you're finding yourself a little more hangry than normal because you're not eating all the things that you're not... Yes? I feel you. I see that. It's not just...

I thought it was just me. I'm very glad that there's someone else. But the reality is we all have prominent things, but there's a difference between what is prominent in life and what is preeminent in life. And what happens in the rest of the story is God takes the prominent and he conquers the prominent because this is what God says he's going to do to Moses. He says, verse 12 of Exodus chapter 12, he says, on the same night, I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. Right? So if you look at the story, what happens is Moses goes back, he tells them that I am sent me to you. And then there's the 10 plagues. Right? You've heard of the 10 plagues. Now, we don't have time to go into that tonight. But if you look at the 10 plagues, it literally starts with the minor gods of Egypt, and then it works out its way up to the major gods of Egypt. Right? And God is literally showing the Egyptians that every prominent God that in their life, everything that is prominent to them, the preeminent God is over all the prominent things. And he reveals himself as the one that rules and deals with those lesser things in our lives, which we value. Because God is able to do that. And then the very last one, which is this one where he says, I'm going to defeat all the gods of Egypt, is the moment when God says, okay, now the very, the highest God of the Egyptians was the Pharaoh himself. Right? And when God kills the firstborn sons, he kills the firstborn son of the Pharaoh, which is the successor, which is essentially God saying, okay, now I've gone through all 10, the gods, and this is your highest God. And I'm going to show you that all these prominent things, I am preeminent over all of them. And it's in that moment that God introduces what is known as the Passover meal. So he, he tells the Israelites to take a lamb and take the blood of the lamb and put it around the door so that the angel of death would pass them by. And this becomes the rhythm. This becomes the habit every year that the Israelites would go through. And every year they would eat the Passover meal, which was bread, which was wine, lamb, and bitter herbs. Right? And every year they would eat this meal and this meal of the Passover, this lamb of God that would bring salvation to them is the lamb of God that they would then anticipate and experience. And they would celebrate it every year for 1,400 years from that moment on until Jesus comes. And we'll get back to that in a minute, because that's the moment, that's the meal that becomes communion. And in about

10 minutes time, we're going to have communion together, and you're going to see how all of this comes together. So fast forward 1,400 years. For 1,400 years, Israel has been out of Egypt, and every year they've ate the Passover meal, celebrating with the bread and the wine that God had set them free. He was the preeminent one, and he conquered all the prominent things. And enter a guy called John the Baptist. And it's the beginning of the Gospel of John, and he's telling this story, and we've actually been journeying through that as Shoreline and Pastor Rob's been preaching about John chapter 1, and he's been taking us through this journey of how John chapter 1, he introduces Jesus as the Word, and then he goes on, and then at some point he introduces John the Baptist in verse 19. And what happens is John the Baptist arrives on the scene, and he starts preaching, and people start joining John the Baptist. They start following him. He gets a lot of followers. He gets a lot of likes. He gets a crowd following him. They're all showing up for him, and people are getting baptized and saved, and there's this revival happening in Israel under John the Baptist. And so the religious leaders, they get excited about John the Baptist and all these things that's happening, because they think maybe he's the one. So they send some people to John the Baptist, and they say, okay, go ask John the Baptist who he is. So it was, you know, now this was John's testimony, verse 19 of chapter 1. Chapter one in John, when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was, he did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, I am not the Messiah. They asked him, then who are you? What about Elijah? So he said, I am not. Are you the prophet? No. Finally said, they said, who are you? Give us an answer so that we can take it back to those who sent us. So John the Baptist, when they ask him who he is,

his answer isn't I am. His answer is I am not. And it's interesting if you go and study, do you guys remember Pastor Rob preached a series late last year about the I am statements of Jesus? Does anybody remember that series? Okay, it was a great series, right? And there was seven I am statements that we took seven weeks to go through during the second half of last year. All the different I am the bread of life, you know, all the different I am statements, seven of them in the book of John. Did you know that there's seven I am not statements by John the Baptist? Seven times John the Baptist says, I am not. And here's the thing, is I think sometimes we forget that we are not. Because John the Baptist says, I am not. And if we understand who is, it helps us to know that we are not. See, sometimes we've got to get the fact that I am not, because we live in a world that's all about who I am, what I do, where I go, who likes me, who follows me, who shows up for me, who reads the stuff I write, how well am I doing, how successful am I? It's not about me, it's I am not the I am. I know the I am, I am the I am not. And when we discover that we are the I am not, something happens.

Because the prominent things in our lives bow to the preeminent one in our lives. And some of these things that are prominent, that are good, that are great in our lives, there's a lot of good things in your life that is prominent and they should be prominent, but we make gods out of them and we forget that they are not gods, they are important, but they are not gods. There's only one God and there's only one that gets to say I am, everything else is I am not. I am not. John the Baptist goes on after making a bunch of I'm not statements and he makes this statement that just wrecks me. In verse 30 he says, this is the one I meant when I said, he's referring to Jesus, he says, the man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me. Now this little bit of Bible makes no sense, right? So how could somebody come after you that has surpassed you because he was before you? How can he be before you if he was after you? Well, it's because the I am was before John was and he will be there after John was and John gets that his identity is not in what he does in the here and the now, but his identity is in what was and what will be. And when we move our identity from this moment, from what satisfies me right now,

from what I need right now, from how I feel right now, from my instant gratification and how many, whatever happened in my day today, and we say it's not about me, I am not, but I am was before me and he will be after me and in fact, he is above me. I am not living for me. I am not and I'm living for I am. When we get that, it changes what we place our identity in. It's not my identity isn't found in my 401k. My identity isn't found in a bank balance or a title or a position. My identity is found in what is eternal in what was before and what will be. My identity is in the uncreated one. I don't worship created things because my identity is in the one that was before me and that will be after me. The one that is forever. There's one thing that John the Baptist says he is and I love that because he goes through it. He says, I'm not this, I'm not this, I'm not this and then in verse 23, he makes this statement. He says, I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness. You've probably heard this before, right? John the Baptist says. I'm not the Messiah, I'm not the prophet, I'm not Elijah, but I am a voice. And what's the difference between a voice and a word? Because John chapter one starts out and it says,

"'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God.'" And it calls Jesus the Word. And Jesus is the Word, but John the Baptist is the voice. And what's the difference between the Word and the voice? Is a voice is but a fleeting moment, but the Word will remain forever. A voice carries the Word, but it isn't the Word. It's just the carrier of the Word. It's just a voice. I am not the Word, but I am the voice that gets to proclaim the Word in everything that I do. I am not, but I know I am. I am not, but I get to proclaim I am. I am just a voice, and He is the Word. Isn't that freeing? Doesn't that just take the weight off life and performance and trying to be good enough and trying to be smart enough, trying to be fulfilled enough, trying to be happy? I am just here to be a voice that proclaims the Word, but the Word, He is, I am. And everything else is just a voice, just a moment. He was before me, and He will be after me. He will be there forever. May we know I am, and may we lay down everything else. May we not allow any other voice or any other important thing or any other opinion or any other perspective to define us. May we be defined not by that which is mere voice, but may we be defined by that which is Word,

by that which was before and that which will remain long after us. So John the Baptist goes through the motions and right in the middle of this whole thing in John chapter one, they've come to Him. They said, who are you? He said, I am not. I am not Elijah, I am not the Messiah, I am not. All I am is I am a voice that is proclaiming the Word. I am a moment, and He is eternal. He was before me, He is above me, and He will be long after I'm gone. I am found in the eternal, and then He comes, and He makes this statement about Jesus in John chapter one, verse 29. He says this, he says, look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He tells everybody around Him, look, there's the Lamb for 1,400 years. Everybody has been once a year sacrificing the Lamb of God to atone for their sins. And now John the Baptist looks and he says, there's the Lamb, there's the I am, there's the one that was revealed to Moses 1,400 years ago in the burning bush, the one that said, I am, I am above it all, I am above all the prominent things, I am the preeminent one. And he says, there's the Lamb of God, the fulfillment of the I am.

And then the rest of the book of John, Jesus says, I am the, I am, I am, I am, and we get to be, I am not, but I know I am. And when we celebrate and partake of communion, what we're partaking of is we're partaking of the Lamb. We get to experience this. The first Passover meal, 1,400 years before Jesus was born, was eaten at the highlight of the preeminent God having shown that he has conquered all the prominent things in this world. And so it is with the slaying of the last of the idols that the Egyptians howled, they ate a meal together to celebrate that God is the one that saves us, God is the I am. And tonight, 2,026 odd years later, maybe minus a couple years for Jesus to grow up, 2,000 years later, we have an opportunity to partake of the communion meal. The meal that Jesus instituted that night before he was crucified, as they were eating the Passover meal. He looked at his disciples, and they remembered the words of John that said, Behold the Lamb of God. And they remembered the words of Jesus saying, I am, I am, I am, I am. And then he takes the bread, and he takes the wine that night, and he breaks the bread, and he says, This is the bread of my body that was broken for you, and this is the wine, the blood that was spilled for the remission of your sins. And he says, As often as you get together, do this in remembrance of me. So that the words of Colossians chapter 1 and verse 18 might be true, that in all things he may have preeminence. So in all things.

I love that. Colossians 1.18. I think it's on there. No? It's okay. Go look it up. It says, So that in all things he might have preeminence. And that's my prayer for you tonight. As you take the bread, as you take the juice, my question to you is this. What are you basing your identity on? What are the prominent things, the voices, that's not the word, that you've based your identity on, that you've allowed to become idols in your life? And may the I am, may the preeminent one, come tonight and break down every idol, break down every prominent thing, break down everything that has captured your heart and your attention. Not just the bad things, but some of the good things that you've placed on par, on the same level. God doesn't want to be just another prominent thing in your life. He is the preeminent one. He is the I am. May it be tonight, as you behold the Lamb, that you remember that he has conquered it all for you. Lord, I pray that as we partake of communion tonight, Lord, that we will be I am not. Because you are. We get to lay down everything in our lives that hold us back, every good thing, every bad thing, every part of us, everything we adore, everything we worship. Lord, I pray that tonight, as we partake of communion, that we will engage all of who you are. And Lord, may we know the I am, the Lamb of God, that has come, whose body was broken and whose blood was spilt, that we might be free and worship I am with all our hearts. Amen.

And I want to encourage you to take a moment, and as we're worshiping and as we're waiting, when you're ready, to head back to one of the tables, and there are people there that's ready to serve you, the bread that represents the body of Christ and the wine that represents His blood that was spilt for the remission of sins. And while I was standing there, listening to these voices, it dawned on me that some voices are better than others. And Kyle, when you were singing and going to those high notes, my gosh.

We're so blessed. Every single one of you on this stage, we are so blessed to have you. All of you musicians, thank you. Thank you, thank you. When I was taking communion and I came back to my seat, I had my head bowed like many of you, just contemplating the beauty of what Jesus had done for us. And I'm wearing a sweatshirt that has Shoreline on it. And when I opened up my eyes, I read the Shoreline, and then it said established in 1987, which I don't know if it's really true because it was in 1986 that Laura and I were walking up and down the street at our house, inviting people to a Bible study. And we were just one voice, two voices. And then I got to looking around the room and seeing a thousand voices worshiping God. He is the word. And we are a voice. But that voice isn't insignificant. It's beautiful to Him. It's beautiful.

Well, it's beautiful to me to hear your voices, to hear your voices and to join our voices together to worship the word who became flesh. It's just amazing. I have two announcements that I need to make, and I forgot one of them. So I was supposed to talk about baptism. Well, what else? Oh, invite card. Okay, I got it, I got it. So this Sunday, we're going to be having a baptism service on a Sunday morning. We don't normally do that on Sunday morning. We do that normally on Wednesday nights, but we're going to be doing it this coming Sunday. And I just want to encourage you to be a part of it. It is always a super special moment. We're celebrating together, people going public with their faith. In reality, it's a lot about what you heard tonight, the identity that we celebrate, that the old man is gone, the old woman is gone, and the brand new creation rises out of the water. The old is passed away. All things have become new. That's what baptism symbolizes.

And it's not just a symbol. It's a step of obedience that I believe will supernaturally and sign up. We would love for you to be a part of it and then invite your friends and your neighbors and your family to join in celebrating that wonderful event in your life. And speaking about invites, we just want to have a culture as a church of always extending an invitation. And these invite cards are just available for you that are at every exit on your way out tonight. Grab a few and have them ready. They're business size cards. So guys, you can put it in your wallet. And of course, ladies, you can lose them in your purse. But it's just an opportunity for us to always be thinking that there's somebody that God wants us to reach out to, somebody that God simply wants us to invite. So we encourage you to do just that.
