We're here because of you And for you And thank you so much today that we can be here with you Jesus, it's all because of you That you saw us on that road You saw us on the cross And you see us now I love you, Jesus We love you, Lord Thank you for this day It's not just about the eggs It's not just about the colors It's not just about the outfits or the meals Or just the events that we go to This is about the greatest event in human history Jesus Christ is risen from the grave and he's alive We love you, Jesus Thank you, Father If you would just join me in this moment right now, I'm going to read from Matthew chapter 27. What I would like for everybody to do in the room is just get in this moment with me. Let's all close our eyes. I just want you to imagine this scene as I read to you. Holy Spirit. Matthew chapter 27, starting in verse 20, says, now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to destroy Jesus. The governor again said to them, which of the two do you want me to release for you? And they said, Barabbas. Pilate said to them, then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ? They all said, let him be crucified.

And he said, why, what evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, let him be crucified. So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd saying, I am innocent of this man's blood. See to it yourselves. And all the people answered, his blood be on us and on our children. If everybody would open your eyes, let's focus on the cross this morning. Then he released for them Barabbas and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. Father, we worship you. We thank you for this resurrection morning, God. Thank you so much for all that you've done for us and we just declare it. Worthy is the lamb. Worthy is the lamb. One more time. Worthy is the lamb. Let's give him some praise in the house today. Amen. Amen. Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. Amen, you guys can be seated. Today's message is titled Sunday's Coming. Allow me to take you back in time to resurrection weekend. It's Thursday. The year is somewhere between 30 and 33 AD. Approximately 1996 years ago. Passover's being celebrated this weekend in the town of Jerusalem. Thousands of families have gathered this weekend to commemorate the deliverance from Israel's slavery and Egyptian bondage. This feast consists of families bringing a sacrificial lamb. offering this lamb up to God for their sins. During this time, Jesus has gathered with his disciples to have the Passover meal with them. While they're eating, Jesus makes a statement that startles everyone. And he says, one of you that's sitting at this table is going to betray me shortly. Immediately, the disciples start discussing back and forth, who could it be? It wouldn't be me.

I wouldn't do that. They're talking back and forth. They continue the meal. And at the end of the meal, Jesus takes his robe off, which represents his authority. And he wraps the servant's towel around his waist. He kneels down. And one by one, he begins to wash the disciples' feet, even the disciple that would betray him soon. When they finished with that, all of them joined together. And they sang a song. They sang a hymn. They left this area. And they go to the Garden of Gethsemane. When they get there, Jesus instructs the disciples to stay outside the garden as he goes in to pray. During this time, he's in a deep prayer. As a matter of fact, the prayer was so intense that the Bible says that his sweat became like great drops of blood. You see, he was seeing what was to come. He knew the cross was before him. He knew the sacrifice that was going to be made. He goes outside the garden multiple times to find the disciples sleeping. He probably understands, because it had been a trying time, an exhausting time, that the disciples are asleep. As they prepare to leave the garden and they come outside the garden, they notice a band of soldiers that have gathered around.

And with those soldiers was Judas. Judas walks up to Jesus to greet him, to hug him. And he gives them that betrayal kiss. This signified that Jesus, which one Jesus was. The soldiers immediately, they come over and they arrest Jesus. They bound him. And they take him to the high priest house. The high priest's name is Annas. When he gets there, Annas begins asking Jesus questions, primarily about the teachings that he had been teaching and he wanted to know about his followers. Jesus responded with, nothing that I did was in secret. All my teachings has been out in the open. He said, I spoke in the temples. I spoke in the synagogues. Nothing was done behind closed doors. And one of the officials of Annas didn't like the way Jesus responded. And he hits, he punches Jesus. We read here that now Jesus is sent to Caiaphas. Caiaphas is part of the Sanhedrin. He's a level above the high priest. So they send him to Caiaphas to continue this preliminary hearing. When he gets to Caiaphas, the questions are different here. Caiaphas' questions are very direct. He was looking for an answer that would be worthy of condemnation or worthy of death. One question, he said, are you the Messiah?

He said, are you the Son of God? Jesus responded with, you say that I am. In Mark's case, he said, I am. That was the words that they were wanting to hear. And immediately, Caiaphas loudly proclaims, blasphemy. Blasphemy. And he deserves death. He deserves death. But Caiaphas, realizing that he didn't have the power under the Roman rule to have him crucified, he's now going to send him to the governor. But beforehand, they've been talking But beforehand, they began to beat Jesus. They beat him. They beat him. They beat him. They mock him. They spit upon him. And then they put a royal robe, send him to the governor. He gets there to the governor's house. It's early Friday morning. But Sunday's coming. Now, again, since they lacked the authority to have him executed, only the governor could pronounce that. So Jesus now is before Pontius Pilate. After questioning multiple questions, Pilate finds no fault in Jesus. And he declared that. He said, I find no fault in him. But he did pick up on something.

The question he understood that that Jesus was from Galilee and that Herod was over the jurisdiction of Galilee So Pilate sent Jesus to Herod the third time now. He's under interrogation Herod hears that Jesus is coming. He's excited. He's actually happy Because Herod had heard of all the miracles that he had done Herod had heard of Jesus like raising the dead raising Lazarus Stop and interrupting the funeral position raising the little boy healing blinded eyes Healing the lepers He'd heard these stories and and Herod actually just wanted to see his power at work. He wanted to see a miracle So he was looking forward to seeing Jesus Jesus shows up at Herod He gets to his house and Herod begins asking questions one question After another question after another question, but unlike Annas's house and Pilate Caiaphas Jesus didn't open his mouth this time. He didn't say a word. He said he sat silent This infuriated Herod He was upset he was mad so he begins to mock Jesus and His people began to mock him and they put a royal robe upon Jesus and then they sent him back again to the governor They sent him back to Pilate Pilate this time Continues asking questions. He look he's just looking for one thing. That would be worthy of execution He asked question after question after question Until eventually he just says guys listen, I find no fault with this man Nothing But as you guys know this being Passover week We pardon a prisoner this weekend. So I'm going to give you the Jews the choice of who you want released You can have Jesus

Who's done nothing that I find guilty of? Or on the other hand you can have this guy by the name of Barabbas. Who's a vile criminal? Who had done a lot of evil he says you pick you choose immediately without hesitation They say give us Barabbas Release Barabbas into our society around our children around our people give us Barabbas Give us Barabbas and the crowds get loud. We won't Barabbas and then they follow up with the words crucify Jesus Crucify Jesus crucified I want you to realize the same people saying Hosanna to the king Just a few days earlier are now saying crucify Jesus Pilate now has done all that he can do And so he says these words he said You've asked for his crucifixion But he said the blood on Him will not be on me and they said fine let that blood be on us and on our children Pilate Symbolically washes his hands in front of the people He's doing that symbolically to distance himself from the responsibility of the crucifixion But they've asked for it and now it begins now, I'm not sure if you all understand What goes into the crucifixion, but it starts with this once he's he's sentenced He's now taken to an area where the beating begins It's just what they do. It's what the Romans do in a crucifixion they take him to the area and they begin beating him and They beat him and they beat him. They whip him The flesh is is bleeding. The Bible says that he's beaten to the point that you couldn't even recognize him if you knew him before you may not know him now and The beating continues, but I want you to understand Jesus did not resist At any point he could have caught a legion of angels down from heaven to deliver him that quick

But he didn't because he had you on his mind He realized that this is the only way as a matter of fact in the garden. He even said father Would you allow this cup to pass from me nevertheless Not my will But thy will be done. So the beating the beatings continue It's horrific It's terrible. And then after the beatings the soldiers began to mock him They even place a purple robe upon him and said here's your king the king of the Jews You see these Roman soldiers were just wired this way they were this is what they did And they now are saying, here's your king. Now it's the third hour, it's 9 a.m., it's Friday. Jesus begins the walk up Golgotha, the place of the skull. With what little strength he had, he's climbing up Calvary. And as he's on his way, he gets up to the top, there's three crosses there. And there's Jesus' cross. They take his body, after it's been beaten and tortured, and they nail it to the cross. They drive spikes through the wrist, where all those nerve endings are at. And then when they finish that, there's a platform off the cross. Just a small platform where the feet stand. They nail the spikes through his feet. So here he is, hanging from the cross. There's two criminals. There's one on either side of him, being crucified along with Jesus. I want you to imagine the pain that's radiating through his body at this point. You see, the Romans had instituted the most ruthless method of torture ever known. It's death by crucifixion. The hour now is the sixth hour. It's noon, it's Friday, but Sunday's coming. His body hangs naked on the cross, public humiliation, beaten beyond recognition.

The Roman soldiers had taken a crown of thorns and pressed it into his head. The blood streaming down his face, down his body. It was a terrible sight. Extreme torture. And here's the thing about the cross. There's no way to relax on this cross. If you try to relax your body weight, the pain in the wrist is so severe, and your body actually begins to suffocate. You can't hang there very long without breathing. The only way to breathe is you have to push with your body weight up off this little platform, and as you push yourself up to get another breath, imagine all the pain that's running through your feet and your legs. And then when you can't stand the pain any longer and your legs become weak, you relax for a second until you can't breathe again. And this continues up and down. I'm explaining it in detail because I want you to understand the significance and what went in to the crucifixion. How much that Jesus loves you. But during the suffering, as he's hanging on the cross, the Bible tells us that darkness comes over Jerusalem. There's a darkness that comes over the earth, and people recognize and realize this is not normal. This is like a total eclipse. Jesus now makes seven statements from the cross, and I want to share those statements with you. The first thing that he said was, Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. Forgiveness came from the cross. The second statement, one of the criminals said to Jesus, remember me, while the other ones mocked and the other one said he did nothing to deserve this, he said, remember me, Jesus.

Second statement, truly I say to you, today, you'll be with me in paradise. Think about that for just one second. The third statement, in his broken state, his weakened body, I can imagine the blood running down through his eyes, barely able to see from being dehydrated and blurriness and he looks down and he catches eyes with someone. It was his mother. It was the one who gave birth to him. The one that the angel said, and he shall be called Emmanuel, God with us. He looks at his mother, and he says, woman, behold, your son. It was his brother. And he makes eye contact with his brother. And He said, Behold your mother. It's winding down. It's quiet. It's silent. And then these three words come out, Illa illa sabashatani. They all recognize that to be my God. My God. Why have you forsaken me? Time goes by. The fifth word, the fifth statement, two words. In that dehydrated state, He said, I thirst, I thirst. The human side of it, I thirst. Sixth statement, three words, it is finished, it is finished. Last statement, Father, into your hands, I commend my spirit. After six hours, up and down, up and down. Six grueling hours. Now He takes His last breath. Jesus, the Son of God, is officially dead. There's no pulse.

There's no breath. He died for you and He died for me. It's the ninth hour. It's three o'clock on Friday. But Sunday's coming. Then they feel movement under them. The earth begins to shake. It's an earthquake in Jerusalem. Everybody picks up on it. Everybody witnesses that something's going on. The earth is shaking. And then someone gives an account down at the temple that, I don't know if you heard this or I don't know if you realize this, but that curtain, that veil has been torn in two. The human didn't do it. God Himself did it. And that symbolizes the thing, the barrier that has separated humanity from God for all of these years has now been opened up and there's access to God the Father and it came through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Come on somebody. It's opened. It doesn't matter. Your family. Your ethnicity. It doesn't matter. Your background. It doesn't matter. Your lifestyle. How you've lived. The scripture tells us now that it's opened up for anyone, whosoever will, confess Jesus

can and will be saved. All of these events had such an impact. There's a Roman soldier that's witnessing it all. He's there to make sure that the crucifixion goes the way it should, but it has such impact on him. I can imagine his heart pounding. He feels the earth shake and he sees the darkness. All of these things happening. He hears about the veil and he says, surely this is the Son of God. And it was. And everyone, everyone's watching. The Jews had gone to Pilate. They requested that Pilate would send a Roman soldier to break the legs of Jesus because they didn't want Jesus hanging on the cross on the Sabbath. Remember it's Friday. They didn't want him hanging there Saturday during the feast of Passover. So the Roman soldier, he shows up to break the legs, to make sure there's no more power to stand up. So he just suffocates, speeds up the death. And so as he comes there to break the legs, he notices that there's no movement. There's no breath. He appears to be dead, but just to make sure, he takes the spear and he runs it in the side of Jesus. He pulls it out. Water. and blood comes pouring down his side, his waist, his legs dripping off the cross to the ground. All of this confirmed his death. Jesus is dead. The Roman soldiers, they also were to take his body down. But there was a man off the cross, but there was a man by the name of Joseph of Arimathea. You see Joseph of Arimathea was a disciple, but he was a secret disciple. People didn't

know that he was serving the Lord. He was an influential man. So Joseph goes to Pilate, the governor, and requests the body. He says, I've got a tomb. I've got my own tomb. It's never been used. If you will allow me, I'll take his body and I'll bury it. Pilate gave him permission and he did that. He went there to get the body and he laid it in his tomb. But the Pharisees and the chief priest also went to Pilate again and they requested that that Rome would seal the tomb and place Roman guards outside in fear that the disciples may steal his body. The disciples though, they're in mourning. They're hiding. They're fearful for what's going to happen next. They don't know. Are they next? Now it's Saturday. It's silent. Jesus's body is lying in the tomb, but Sunday's coming. Can I hear an amen to that? It's early Sunday morning. It's still dark out and the women come to the tomb with spices. When they get there, to their amazement, they notice that the stone has been rolled away and there's angels there and then angels announced, why do you come looking? Why do you come looking for the living among the dead? He's not here. He has risen. Come on somebody. He's not here. He's risen. Quickly, quickly, quickly, quickly go tell the disciples. And they did that. They go back to the disciples and they tell them. And Peter and another disciple actually ran to the tomb and when they get there, they find it empty with burial cloths left behind. Jesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene. Maybe the greatest sinner of all. Why did he do that? I think to give you and I hope. To let you know that maybe you're in one of those cells today in the 743 correctional facilities and you're looking at your life and saying, I don't deserve this Jesus. I've committed too much sin. Or maybe you're here today and you're saying, I've done too much wrong. The first person to see Jesus had done a lot of wrong. Mary Magdalene. But he chose to show himself first to her. Later, he appears to two men walking down the road. They're on the road to Emmaus. Jesus walks right up beside him and they didn't even recognize him until he sat down and broke bread with them. And I would guess that he's sitting at the table. As he reaches out to get his piece of bread, it probably exposed the palms of his hand. And they said, wait

a minute. There's scars in his hand. That's Jesus. And it was Jesus. And he left. Later that evening, Sunday evening now. Seems like times moving faster. The disciples are behind locked doors. They're hiding. As I said earlier, they're scared. Jesus comes through those locked doors. Appears before them and shows them the scars. Scars in his hand and in his side and there's peace that comes into that room. There's hope that comes into that room. It's like yes, he died, but he's alive today and he's with us today, amen. Praise the Lord. And then, and then 40 days go by. For the next 40 days, Jesus made it a point to go throughout Jerusalem, revealing himself in the resurrected body to many people, 500 at one point. He wanted everyone to know and to confirm the resurrection. So today, I'm proud to announce the stone is rolled away, the tomb is empty and Jesus is alive. Amen. Praise the Lord. I said Jesus is alive. Jesus is alive. Come on somebody. Give him praise in this house today. Come on. Put your hands together if you're happy for him being alive, for saving you, for delivering you. I want you to listen closely. I'm going to ask the prayer team if you guys would come, come forward, please. For you that don't know or maybe you're new here, we have a group of individuals that, that pray diligently for all of these services. And they're here to pray for you. Any need you may have.

Whatever weight you're carrying today, I want you to listen closely. Whether it's guilt, maybe it's fear. Maybe you're carrying doubt or unforgiveness. Maybe you're bitter, you're angry or you're hurt. Listen to me. He's conquered it. I said he's conquered it. I said he's conquered it. Amen. The same power that raised Jesus from the grave will give you new life today. I don't know who you are, but maybe you come today searching for new life or a new beginning. You come to the right spot. Can I hear an amen to that? You've come to the right spot today and right now he's calling you. Right now he's calling you. If you feel burdened, you're struggling, you need this Jesus I'm talking about. I'm going to ask you right now, before the worship team sings the song, I want you to just make your way out from the seat where you're at. And I want you to come to this altar and allow these individuals to pray with you. Come on, make your way up right now. If you need this Jesus, if you need new life, if you need him to relieve guilt, fear, shame, doubt, unbelief, come on. Somebody needs to move right now. I feel like somebody needs to step out. I know you may say, well, pastor, that's going to be very embarrassing in a room this size. Listen to me. Come on. Let's praise the Lord because here's a young man saying, here I come. There's more that need to come. Come on, make your way up.

Maybe you need to accept this Jesus I'm talking about. Listen to me, if he would publicly go and hang on the cross, if he would appear naked in front of all the people because he loved you that much, would you not be willing to step out in a crowd and say, count me in? Count me in, Jesus. I want to serve you. I want to live for you. Anybody else? Come on. Make your way out of the stadium seats. We're going to sing this last song. Maybe you're carrying some type of heaviness today. He will set you free from that. Come on. God's moving in this place. Can I hear an amen? There's more coming. Make your way. Make your way down. There's more coming. We love you all. We know God loves you even more. Help us. Let's worship together with this last song. If you need a touch in your body, you need healing today, whatever it is, I want you to come. Find someone to agree with you in prayer. God bless you. In the darkness, we were waiting, without hope, without light, till from heaven you came running.

There was mercy in your eyes to fulfill the law and prophet. To a virgin came the word. From a throne of endless glory to a cradle in the dirt. Praise God. Father, praise the Son. Praise the Spirit, three in one. God of glory, majesty. Praise forever to the King of kings. To reveal the kingdom come, and to reconcile the lost. To redeem the whole creation. You did not despise the cross, for even in your suffering, you sought to the other side. Knowing this was our salvation, Jesus, for our sake, you died. Oh, thank you, Lord. Praise the Father.
