Don't Quit Now
Have you ever felt like quitting right when things get hard? In this message, Pastor Phil challenges us to stay faithful, trust God’s presence, and not walk away from what He’s called us to. If you’re feeling discouraged, this message will remind you why now is not the time to quit.
My name is Phil Curlin and I have the privilege to serve as one of the pastors on the team. Avon campus, can you help me to welcome those joining at Fairview Park in Twinsburg and online? (audience applauding) That's right, we're one church in multiple locations and on behalf of our team and our incredibly amazing dream team, our volunteers, we are so glad that you have chosen to worship with us on this first Sunday in May. Now, I'm excited, I'm excited. Yes, because I'm preaching today, but more so because we're two days away from Cinco de Mayo. Come on, somebody, tacos in the name of Jesus. Come on, somebody. Listen, if you go to the Mexican place that I'm at, I'm gonna preach to Michael Sermon from last week. Get out of my way, get out of my way. Listen, that was a word. Was that not a good message last Sunday? Come on, journey, that was so good. And if you didn't hear it, or even if you did, you need to get out of your own way and go listen to it again. You know, I was thinking about the message and here's what I came to the conclusion of. Sometimes what's between me and what God wants to do is me, not the devil, not you. Now, if you're between me and my tacos,
then we got a problem. But sometimes what separates me from what God has for me is my preferences. Come on, who am I preaching to? My priorities, my timeline. The way I think it should be, my pride, my control, my wishes, my, my, my, me, myself, and I. And Pastor John Michael, man, he challenged me 'cause it reminded me, his message reminded me, reminded us that God, yes God, the same God yesterday, today and forever, he can reach anyone, anywhere, at any time, in any way. And he wants to use me. He wants to use you to do it. So why limit God? Let's get out of the way and let God use us, how he wants to, amen? Well, we're gonna continue walking through this amazing series in the book of Acts. I hope you've been blessed by it. The series is called The Next Chapter. We started studying this right after Easter and we've made it through Acts chapter 10 so far. I'm gonna jump forward to Acts chapter 18. If you have your Bible, I hope you do, you can hold it in the air and wave it like you just don't care or your smartphone, that counts too. We believe in the authority of the word of God. You go to the New Testament.
You got the four Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. Then you got the book of Acts. The story of the early church. And it's not just a history counting for what happened. It's the blueprint for our very lives. This book shows us that sometimes it's exciting to follow Jesus. And sometimes it's hard to follow Jesus. And by testifying, following Jesus is great and hard at the same time. I mean, right? The world would have us think that, oh, look at you. Oh, good, good, good, good, look Christian, God, Christian girl there must be great to bro, bro. If you only knew. I mean, my God, the calves can't even clench. And I got, I mean, I'm a follower of Jesus trying to figure this out. What is going on? Tonight's the night in the name of Jesus. Come on, somebody. You know, listen, following Jesus, I want to tell you something. A lot of you have made a decision to put your faith in Jesus in this calendar year. So far over 300 people have made a decision to put their faith in Jesus because of the ministry of journey church, man. And I want to tell you something.
If you've been following Jesus for a short while or a long while, here's what I'll tell you. Starting matters, but it's not about how you start. It's also, following Jesus is also about learning how to stay, how to stay faithful. When everything pulls at you to not. And listen, I think some of us, if we're honest, if we're honest, journey church, some of us are at a critical moment on May 3rd, 2026. We are teetering between persevering and tapping out. We're thinking about quitting, what we're thinking about throwing in the towel on a relationship, on a business venture, on a friendship, on a boss, on a place of employment, on our faith. Or we're thinking about quitting on God. And the Lord sent me here to tell you, quit quitting. I know you feel overwhelmed and burned out And this message is for everyone, but it's specifically the Holy Spirit said, "This message is for people who are burned out and tired "and overwhelmed and they're thinking about quitting." I mean, in your mind, you may have already quiet quit. It's just not public knowledge yet, but thanks be to God that the Word of God today is gonna challenge us and I pray encourage us to not quit. In fact, I want you to elbow your neighbor right now, elbow your neighbor and tell them, "DQ," it doesn't mean disqualified, it means don't quit. Don't quit, see, some of us, we think we're disqualified
and so we should just quit, but the title of my message today, write this down, tell them my messages, "Don't quit now." Come on, you say that with me on three every campus, one, two, three, "Don't quit now." No, no, no, put some stank on it. One, two, three, "Don't quit now." Come on, tell the devil, "Don't quit now." Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, you want me to tell the devil not to quit? What are you talking about? Listen, if you're not being attacked by the devil, you ain't worth it as a threat to him. You might wanna start thinking about how you're living your life. He's the enemy of your soul. His assignment is to steal, kill, and destroy, but we are more than conquerors. You don't have to quit just 'cause it gets hard. See, some of us, we have a get-out plan. We have a backup plan. It reminds me, you don't know, as a history teacher, right? So go with me. It reminds me of this guy, Hernando Cortez. Man, he's a good-looking chap. That beard. Jeff Good's got nothing on Cortez. The year's 1519, about 600, a little less than 600 men sail to what is now Mexico, Spanish conquistadors,
and they're outnumbered, right? They are in unfamiliar territory. They're facing an uncertain future, and his men are growing a little bit nervous, and they're thinking about a way out. They thought, well, if this doesn't go as planned, we'll just get on the ships, and we will go back to what is familiar and comfortable, that which we know. See, some of us were thinking about going back to the familiar and the comfortable, and the Lord says, if you wanna survive, you can't go back, you gotta move forward. And so, my man Cortez does the unthinkable. Rumor has it, legend has it, that Mr. Cortez gives the order to burn the ships. It's to destroy the ships. What is he saying? He's saying, there's no retreat, there's no backup plan, there's no exit strategy. Once the ships are gone, quitting's not an option anymore. And I don't know about you, but I don't have literal ships that I need to burn, but I have some exit strategies in my mind that I need to burn. I need to surrender them to the Lord. I need to say, I'm all in, God. I know it's maybe not exactly how I thought it would be, but God, I'm all in. I'm all yours, and I'm all in.
And I think some of us, if it gets hard, we have a get out. If it doesn't work the way we intended it to work, in the timeline, we intended it to work. In our minds, we think, well, I'll just move on. I'll just go do something else. I'll find a new husband, I'll find a new girlfriend, I'll find a new boss, I'll find a new house. And we're so quick in this disposable society that we live in to just, when it gets hard, move on. But I believe the Lord wants us today to have some staying power, some DQ, not literally, that's the enemy of your soul, that Dairy Queen, whoo doggy. That'll make you feel a certain kind of way. It's good though, Mitchell's just saying. Don't quit now, Acts chapter 18, Acts chapter 18. Paul, may he just finished his first missionary journey. And I'm catching you up, John Michael left off at Acts 10. So between Acts 10 and Acts chapter 18, Paul had traveled around to these different cities, mostly because when he'd show up, he'd preach the gospel, people would get saved. And then there'd be some church people that didn't like it, and they'd start stoning him or arresting him, throwing him in prison, beating him. So he had to get out of town. And so he'd go to the next city. And so when we get to Acts chapter 18, Paul's in Corinth, okay? Now Corinth does an interesting city.
Corinth has roughly about 250,000 people. Some estimates are as high as 750,000 people in AD 50. And it's right on the port between Northern and Southern Greece. Okay? And so what happened was there was 120,000 people there, there's hundreds of thousands of believers. When Paul had gone on these missionary trips and he had planted churches in Philippi and Thessalonica in Berea, and he ends up in Corinth 'cause he had just gotten beaten and stoned and he was laying down as if dead on the ground. And the other followers disciples came up and the Bible says they surrounded him and then Paul got up, walked away. That's the power of God, everybody. That's the power of God. He didn't quit, he goes to Corinth. And now Corinth has 250,000 people, and the most distinguishing feature of Corinth is the temple of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. Now the Romans would refer to Aphrodite as Venus, right? The goddess of love. And there were thousands of male and female temple prostitutes, so whenever you would come into the city of Corinth, you would worship the goddess of love by engaging in relations with one of these temple prostitutes. It was absolutely despicable, sexual perversion and immorality all over Corinth, right? Drunkenness, chaos, violence, spiritual darkness.
And you thought you had a bad day. No wonder in Acts chapter 18, verse nine, Paul's feeling afraid. Bible says one night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision. Do not be afraid. Keep on speaking. Do not be silent for I am with you. The Lord would say to you today, I am with you. And no one, Paul, is going to attack or harm you. That's good news for Paul, 'cause that's all he's known up into this point. You go back a couple of pages in your Bible, he was just in the inner cell with Silas worshiping, beaten, flogged, wrongfully arrested. So when the Lord says, don't be afraid, I'm with you. Keep speaking, no one's going to harm or attack you. That's a big deal. And then check this out. It says, because I have many people in this city, so Paul stayed, say that word, stayed. So Paul stayed, so Paul stayed for a year and a half. Typically, Paul would stay a few weeks, maybe to a couple of months before he was run out of town. He stayed, say, stayed. He stayed a year and a half teaching them the word of God. Starting is easy, staying is hard. Starting in a new marriage is fun. Staying in a marriage can be hard. Starting a family can be somewhat easy, but staying committed to raising those children
in the way of the Lord, man, that's hard. Starting a business is hard, but we're relatively speaking. If you look back 20, 30, 40 years, you're like, man, it's hard now. Staying true and faithful to what God's called you to, staying is hard. And the first thing I wanna show you that we can learn from the Apostle Paul is this, point number one, write this down. Don't quit when you feel discouraged. Amen? Don't quit when you feel discouraged. See, God wouldn't be telling Paul, don't be afraid if Paul wasn't afraid. Paul, the Apostle who wrote 2/3 of the New Testament is afraid. It gives me permission to feel afraid at times. But your feelings don't define who you are. Your feelings are real, but they are not final. Well, too many of us, we make decisions based upon our feelings. We should be making decisions based upon the way the Lord leads us. As we spend time in the Word and in prayer and wise counsel, we can feel discouraged or afraid or overwhelmed or heavy burdened or tired, but the Lord would say just 'cause you feel that way doesn't mean it's true. See, discouragement distorts the truth. Anybody ever been discouraged, raise your hand. Yo, some of you don't have your hands up.
I need to talk to you after the service. You clearly didn't watch game six of the Cavaliers 'cause I am straight discouraged. How does the ball hit the back of the rim go that high and go in, it's fixed. I'm telling you, something tonight's the night though in the name of Jesus, okay? Come on, don't quit when you feel discouraged. You ever been discouraged then you know that discouragement starts to whisper phrases to you. There's these beliefs, these lies. When you feel discouraged, you start thinking, it's not worth it. When you feel discouraged and you're married, you say, well, we're the only one struggling, really. When you're discouraged, you start thinking crazy things, like, I should just quit. It wasn't worth it. Did I really even believe in Jesus? See, discouragement becomes a slippery slope, and it's the playground of the devil. See, this is why God shows up in Acts chapter 18, verse nine, and tells Paul, don't be afraid. Don't be discouraged. Don't quit. Keep speaking. See, fear is when you're driven by what you see, friends. Faith is when you're anchored by what God says. Even when what I see contradicts what God says. God gives Paul a promise.
God says, no one will harm you. He says, I have people in this city. And what I love about this is all Paul could see was resistance and probably trying to figure out a way out. All Paul could see was problems, but God saw people. What about you? What about your work or your neighbors or your family or your circle of friends? Well, what about where God has you right now? Maybe what you see is problems and pain. Maybe what the Lord sees is opportunity. Maybe he has you there, man of God, because you're on an assignment for those people that he's called you to parent, for those employees that he's called you to lead. See, God says I will provide, but fear says, don't give him the offering. You might not have enough next month. See, God says, faith says, stay, serve the Lord. Fear says, run. God says, don't quit now. Fear says, it's not worth it. You tried church, you tried a small group. You tried that relationship. It's not worth it. But the Bible says, come on, how may I thankful for the word of God at Journey Church? Man, the Bible says in Galatians, chapter six, verse nine, get you a tattoo if you need one. If you need a new one, Galatians six, nine.
Paul writes to the church in Galatia. He says, let us not become weary in doing good for at the proper time, which is usually not my time or your time. At the proper time, you will what? Repa harvest if you don't give up. Journey Church, the word of the Lord today is real simple. Don't quit now. Don't give up. I know you feel discouraged, but I believe the best is yet to come. Come on, I believe you're closer than you think. Come on, I believe that you've already spent too much money, time, and energy to quit now. I believe those children that you've been raising in the way of the Lord, why would you give up now? You've been praying for so long. Now you're gonna give up? Is it just because you feel like quitting doesn't mean you're supposed to? Now I'm not going to ask you to raise your hand, but I wonder rhetorically, how many people needed that truth today? I feel like quitting. I've done everything I know how to do. I feel like quitting, feelings are real, but that doesn't mean they're always final or true. What's so fascinating to me is in Acts chapter 18, Paul's afraid he's discouraged.
He's trying to figure a way out of Corinth before he even settles in. But years later, a few years later, Paul writes a letter to the church in Corinth, first Corinthians. He writes a letter, his first letter, chapter two, verses one to five. As is Paul reflecting on what it meant for him to stay and obey God. He says, when I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom. As I proclaim to you, the testimony about God. I resolved to know nothing while I was with you, except Jesus and him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. I love the honesty. Paul's like, just keeping it real. I wasn't feeling it, but I was obedient. I stayed. I felt like quitting. I felt discouraged, but I stayed. How did Paul, why did Paul stay? Now, maybe that's never happened to you or I. Maybe it has. I don't know. But we got the word of God as the evidence and testimony of what it looks like to stay. Here's why Paul, here's why one reason why I think Paul stayed because he knew God was with him. Point two is this, don't quit when God is still with you. Don't quit when God is still with you, friend. God doesn't change the situation. He declares his presence to Paul. And I wonder if your situation feels like a struggle because you've been missing the priority of time in his presence. Well, God wants more than anything is time with you. Don't quit when God's still with you.
Don't quit. See, God's presence in your life is confirmation to keep going. He's with you. Guys, he's for you. Friend, I want you to know he sees you. He's not given up on you. Don't quit now. Don't quit now. And I want to put a pin in my message for just a moment. And I want to lean into what I feel the Lord wants me to do. I want to ask you at every campus, just close your eyes for just one second. And it may be just one or two people. That's okay. It may be dozens of people. That's okay too. If you're here today and you're feeling overwhelmed, heavy burdened, you're feeling, man, there's so much adversity. You're feeling a little hopeless or discouraged because you just lift your hand at every campus. I want to pray for you. In fact, I want to declare the word of the Lord over you. If you're not lifting your hand, that's okay. There are people who are. You don't need to peek. Just begin to pray. Lord, strengthen whoever's got their hand up right now. Keep your hand raised for a second. Lord, in the name of Jesus, I just declare Isaiah chapter 41 verse 10, "Do not fear. I am with you. I will strengthen you and I will help you." In the name of Jesus, Holy Spirit, would you come near to every man, every woman, every person that's got their hand up right now, every marriage, every family, every single person, every elderly person, every young adult, every teenager, every man, every woman. In the name of Jesus, I declare God that you would draw near to them as they draw near to you. God, you would comfort them and strengthen them. Father, give them a resolve to burn the ships and to not quit. In Jesus' name, I pray. If you agree, would you say amen? Amen. The scripture I just declared over you was Isaiah 41 verse 10 and I want to point out the order. See, the order, order matters. A lot of times when I pray, tell me if you can relate by show of hands. A lot of times when I pray, I'm praying for God to help me. God, would you help me with? God, I need wisdom. God, I'm not sure what to do. God, help me with these kids. God, help me with these people. Help me with these neighbors. God, help me with, help me, help me, help me. Look at the order. First, God says, I'm with you. Presence over problem solving. People over process. First, He says, I'm with you. Then He says, now that I'm with you, I'm going to strengthen you. Then He says, I'm going to help you. Any married people in the room? Any dating people at our campuses today? Anybody ever had this argument with their significant other? Hey, baby, it's date night. What do you want to do? I don't know. What do you want to do? I don't know. I asked you first, what do you want to do?
Well, I don't know. It's date night. How do you not know what to do? Well, you pick. No, no, no, you pick. Now, if you're newly married, it's like you pick. If you've been married for like a month, you're like, no, you pick. I don't even want to go on a date anymore. Let's pretend like it's not date night. I'm just kidding. That's a joke. But you know what I'm talking about? You're like arguing about what you're going to do? Could you just help me figure out what to do? I'm trying here, babe. I'm supposed to take you out for Mother's Day. Where do you want to go? I don't know. You're supposed to, you know, make a reservation. I was. Sorry. You know what I've resolved when my wife and I at times have had that healthy discussion. I said, uh, watch me. I said, I don't really You want to go for a walk, I'll go for a walk. You want to play a game, I'll play a game, I'll probably win. I wonder if the Lord is saying to you, I just want to be with you. Do you want to be with me, son? You keep asking for my hand of help, and I'll give it to you. You keep asking for the source of strength, and I'll give it to you, but the Lord says there's power and there's peace in my presence. Do you want to be with me or you just want something from me? And I believe in our marriage and as parents and as men and women of God, we need a resolve to say, God, I don't know why it's this way, but I'm going to be with you. And I don't know how much longer it's going to be this way, but God, I'm just going to be with you. See, we get so busy. Listen to me. We get so busy asking instead of believing. Watch me. We ask, we start asking, why am I still alone? Instead, we should be believing God is with me. We start asking, why is this still so hard instead of asking, why is this still so hard? What if we started believing that God will strengthen me for it? We start asking, how much longer do I have to wait for provision, for a job, for a spouse, for a kid? How much longer God? What else do you want from me? Instead of asking, how much longer do I have to wait? What if we really started to believe God, I trust that you will help me. Write these three phrases down. God is with me. God will strengthen me. God will help me. Isaiah 41, 10, order matters. God is with me. God will strengthen me and God will help me. Listen, if God's still with you, he's not finished with you. If God's still with you, he's not finished with you, friend. And the last thing I want to show you, point number three. Number one was don't quit when you feel discouraged.
Number two is don't quit when God's still with you. And number three is don't quit where God told you to stay. Paul was really good at going from place to place. And God used that. But in Acts chapter 18, God was teaching Paul a different lesson. It's the lesson I believe he wants to teach. Some of us, he was teaching Paul how to stay, how to stay. Everything changed when Paul learned how to stay. See, sometimes, I don't know about you, but I know for me, I will evaluate my situation based upon what I see, forgetting that God's working beneath the surface. I see the Israelites, they're crying out for years for a deliverer. God, would you please deliver us from Pharaoh? And while they were crying out for deliverance, God was working on Moses's heart, preparing him to be a deliverer, just because you can't see God answering your prayer doesn't mean he isn't working it out. I believe that if you would persevere, if you would be in his presence, be in his word, you would see the fruit of what is on the other side of staying. Maybe you've thought about walking away from a place God has you. I want to challenge you with this phrase, don't walk away from a place that God assigned you to. I know a thing or two about staying. I've been in the same relationship with the same woman of God for 23 years of my 41 years. I'm not trying to boast, I'm just saying it's not because it's always absolutely incredibly amazing. She is. I'm just not always in the good and in the hard, in the times of plenty and in the times of lack. Stay. Don't take the easy way out. I don't know about you, but I'm grateful that you're here, but maybe you came here because you went from church to church to church to church. And sometimes that's needed. That's okay. I'm not I'm not here to judge you, but I'm telling you there isn't a silver bullet This church started in 2009, and I started coming in 2010, and there are more people in this room right now than there were then when the church started. Talking about, "Oh, look at this church. All these campuses reaching all these people." Do you know how hard it was? Do you know how hard it was when we weren't sure if there was going to be money to pay the bills? But God, somebody.
We didn't have enough staff, but God. We didn't have enough volunteers, but God. We didn't have enough Easter eggs. Well we had a lot of Easter eggs. If you've been around, you know we used to do lots of those. There's no perfect church. There's no perfect spouse, but there's a good God. And if you'll stay where he has assigned you, you'll see the fruits. Now, see it's nice to celebrate what God's been doing the last 6, 8, 10, 12, 18 months. Praise God. Do you want me to tell you what it cost for years to see the harvest? Oh, we ain't that good. God is. There are people who prayed prayers and sowed seeds and gave generously for the seeds that you're sitting in. For the stage that I'm standing on, glory to God for those that came before us. And thanks be to God for those who will come after us. They're being raised up and trained in kids ministry right now. I'm a product of that. I went to kids church and Sunday school and youth camp. See, maybe you're saying God, this just isn't working for me. What if God's saying, son, I am working on your behalf? Maybe you're saying, forget this, this is worthless. I'm worthless. God would say, it's worth it. You're worth it. Maybe you're saying, this is a pain and you know what? I would say, this is your assignment. I know the first three letters kind of finished the first sentence, right? Just give somebody a mist it.
I just want to make sure I'm not embracing cursing. I'm just saying what you think is a pain might have purpose. You need to put a purpose on your pain. You know how you do it? You get in his presence. When you're in his presence, the pain may not change, but there's a purpose that God gives you in the midst of it. See, God didn't just call Paul to go. He taught him how to stay. And so the last thing I want you to write down in your notes is this. What assignment does God have for me right where I am? I'll repeat it. It's not on the screen. I'll repeat it for you. What assignment does God have for me right where I am? You know, sometimes breakthrough happens after you want to leave. Sometimes fruit forms in the places you were going to abandon. You oftentimes assignments only make sense if you stay long enough. Don't quit now. You hear me? You hear the Lord speaking to you? Don't quit now. Friend, you're so close. Your marriage is so close to breakthrough. Your business is so close. I know it feels, but the truth is God has his eye and he has his hand on you. Don't quit now. The devil would say, "You're dequeued. You're disqualified." You should say, "I'm dequeued.
I don't quit." Not now. God didn't bring me this far to leave me. I believe sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is stay. Remember, parenthesis, if you're in an abusive, unhealthy relationship where you're unsafe, I'm not saying stay and just keep taking it. I just want to make sure I'm saying this, okay? I'm gonna break my flow just to be You don't know where to reach out to you. You can reach out to the church We'll point you in the right place. You know I'm saying like I'm not saying stay and just take it No, no, I'm talking about some staying power in your faith I'm talking about some staying power when you feel discouraged. Come on. I'm talking about some staying power because God is with me I'm talking about some staying power because God has me on assignment You might not realize it, but you have an assignment That's why I asked you to write down God. What assignment do you have for me right where I am? I'm gonna ask for you to close your eyes and bow your heads at every campus At the beginning of the message I told you a story about Cortez and how he burned the ship So he there was no way of going back No exit strategy because the truth is if you leave yourself an exit strategy eventually you'll probably end up more often than not taking it And so I believe some of us came into church this weekend with a backup plan And I believe that the Lord wants you to burn the ships of your backup plan He wants you to double down and commit to your spouse to your kids to this church to your small group Put your money where your mouth is but maybe literally maybe that's just a figure of speech and idiom But maybe it's just like stick with it. Don't quit step up and serve. You know, I'm not sure about this journey church I'm not sure about this faith thing. I tell you God didn't quit on you Don't quit on him not now If you're here today or you're at one of our campuses with your eyes closed and your heads bowed The first group of people I want to talk through are those that you came in I prayed for you earlier But but maybe now there's some more of you. You're afraid you're discouraged. You're overwhelmed. You're tired You got nothing left to give you're running on fumes
I just feel in my spirit. There are so many of us and if we're truly honest Man, the Bible tells us we can come to God when we're weary and overwhelmed and he'll give us a rest He'll give us peace on the count of three. This isn't a salvation moment I'll do that next this is for people whether you're following God or not if you're overwhelmed or heavy burden and you want to Exchange that for rest in peace I believe in the supernatural transfer that when you give God your pain He gives you peace. Could you just lift your hand one two three? That's me man a lot of hands This message was for you Lot of hands Lot of hands Why don't you keep your hand raised in it at every campus? I want us to stand to our feet and our prayer team at twinsburg fairview here at Avon could you come forward? Let's all stay into our feet.
