DON’T YOU FORGET IT | Psalm 103:2, Psalm 106:7 | Ryan Horton
In this stirring, convicting, and deeply practical message, guest speaker Ryan delivers an urgent charge to safeguard our faith against the slow erosion of spiritual forgetfulness. Preaching from Psalm 103:2 and contrasting it with Psalm 106:7, he explores the stark difference between David’s command to "never forget the good things He has done" and the Israelites who "soon forgot His many acts of kindness" right after witnessing the parting of the Red Sea.
Ryan exposes the heavy spiritual consequences of living without a conscious, active awareness of God's goodness. Sharing the cautionary story of a pastor of 25 years who eventually walked away from faith, he warns that disbelief rarely happens overnight. Instead, small seeds of forgetfulness serve as a fast track to disbelief—causing us to incrementally back away from what we once knew to be true.
Recounting the overwhelming benefits detailed throughout Scripture—from forgiveness, healing, and tender mercy to generational covenant promises—Ryan calls believers to intentionally cultivate a tender heart through purposeful remembrance. Remembering who God is and what He has done is not an exercise in vanity for God, but a divine safeguard for our own souls.

Just a word that I feel like the Lord has laid on my heart. I feel like just several weeks ago I was in prayer and the Lord dropped something so strong in my spirit. And so this morning, if you have your Bibles or a Bible app, however you engage with the Scripture, maybe you just read enough to screen today, can you turn to Psalms 103? 103, Psalms 103, and we'll start with verse 2. And it just simply reads this, "Let all that I am praise the Lord. May I never forget the good things He has done for me." I want to read it one more time and put a little bit of emphasis on some key words that I want to point out this morning. "Let all that I am praise the Lord. May I never forget the good things He does for me. May I never forget the good things He does for me." I want to read a contrasting verse this morning. I think it's going to really help me preach this thing and make the point that I feel like the Holy Spirit wants me to make. Psalms 106, verse 7, just simply says this, "Our ancestors in Egypt were not impressed by the Lord's miraculous deeds. They soon forgot His many acts of kindness to them." Psalms 103 says, "Never forget the good deeds that I've done." Psalms 106 says, "They soon forgot all the acts of kindness that He did for them." 103, He commands us, "Never forget." 106, "They soon forgot." This morning I want to preach a message entitled, "Don't you forget it." Don't you forget it. It's a word that even as I say it, I'm just asking the Holy Spirit to let it pierce our heart this morning. Don't you forget it. It's a word for you just as much as it's a word for me. The Lord has been stirring me up for the last two weeks in my spirit over and over and over. Ryan, don't you forget it. Amen? Can we go to the Lord in prayer this morning and just ask Him to come and meet us through Scripture? Jesus, we honor you. We love you so much. God, we thank you for what you're doing in New York City through Good Company Church. God, we thank you for every volunteer, every team member that's committed and connected to this house to see the vision of God move forward. This morning we're asking that you would come in and that you would provoke us, that you would stir us by the reading of Scripture, by the preaching of the Word. God, I pray that you would come in and do what only you can do this morning. Holy Spirit, we believe that your Word is a lamp unto our feet, a light unto our path. It gives us direction. It stirs us up. It points us in the right way. It teaches us what's right and wrong. I pray that the principle you've laid on my heart would be properly communicated via the Holy Spirit and it would sit on the inside of us. It would change us. It would transform us from the inside out and everybody pray, Amen. Come on, come on, come on, come on. Can we give
it up for Stephen this morning? Thank you, man. Thank you so much. Wow, what a morning already, man. I'm so stirred in the Spirit even though it's a rainy day. Man, my Spirit is fully alive. Hey, some might say that I'm late to the party. You might ask what party you're talking about. The AI app party for years or excuse me, for about a year now, I have asked questions to chat via my wife's account. And so finally the other day, my wife, she's Indian, she's real spicy. She just listened, bro. She actually, I know when she's, she's a little upset at me, other married men in the house, you might know what I'm talking about. She said, boy, if you don't, when she starts calling me boy, I know there's a problem. She said, boy, if you don't get your own account, we're going to fight. Something will happen. And so I said, all right, all right, yes, ma'am. So I hurried and got chat TPT and I started asking chat some goofy questions. That was probably my biggest fear of getting an AI app like that. I knew I probably would waste some time. So started asking him some goofy questions. One of the questions I asked chat was this, chat, how forgetful is the human race. And the paraphrase version, I can't even calculate how forgetful they are. And then I looked at my phone and I said, hold up family, I'm about to get a little salty over this now. I'm about to get offended over this because you're talking about my people. But then as I started looking deeper in the scripture, I said, you know, chat might know a little something, something. I feel like the Holy Spirit is going to give us some answers to this morning. He's going to give us some remedies this morning. Everything that I am preaching this morning is something that I've genuinely brewed over in prayer and something that the Holy Spirit has already started an initial work in me. So I want you to hear my heart this morning. I'm not preaching at you. I'm preaching together, we're in this,
we're walking this thing out together this morning. The word that I'm preaching is, I need it just as much as anybody in this room in a desperate way. This morning, there are consequences to the level in which I forget. There are consequences to the level in which I forget. Let me explain to you. If my wife asks me to take out the trash, our trash is picked up on Friday mornings, about 6.30 in the morning. She asked me to do this on a Thursday night. I forget to do it on Thursday night. I hear the trash man, the garbage man roll up with his truck at 6.30 in the morning on a Friday. I jump out of bed, I throw some clothes on, run downstairs, grab the trash can, run down the driveway and chase the trash can, or trace, excuse me, trace the garbage man all the way down the road, trying to get his attention, flag at him to stop. Finally, get his attention. The only thing that that would cost me in that moment is time. The only consequence for my lack of remembering is time. But say she asked me to pay the light bill and I forget to pay the light bill. Well, there is a little bit more at stake. With the light bill, we end up sitting in the dark if you forget to pay that because you know,
the electric companies, they don't keep the lights on without that money, you know what I'm saying? So you sit in the dark and then there's a chance that we lose everything in our refrigerator depending on how long we sit there. There's a chance that there's a fuse in my hot water heater that blows when the electric goes out every time we lose power. And so now it's not just costing me time, but it's also costing me money. There are consequences to the level in which we forget. Why are you starting there, Ryan? Why does this thing sound so deep? As I was praying and seeking the Lord, I felt like that's what I heard from the Holy Spirit. Ryan, there really are consequences to not remembering my goodness. There are consequences to not remembering my goodness. And as I started continuing to press in and prayer, it's very evident the Lord was saying, "Son, I'm not narcissistic. I don't need to hear from you how good I am. I'm not a God that is constantly leaning my ear down, trying to hear what my sons and daughters are saying about me because I need it because I'm egotistic." But he's saying the consequences, relationship, and ultimately it's for your benefit. It's for your benefit. I want to show you in Scripture some folks that got it wrong
in hopes that this would help us get it right. It would help us provoke something on the inside of us. Psalms 106 verse 7. Our ancestors in Egypt were not impressed by the Lord's miraculous deeds. They soon forgot his many acts of kindness to them. Instead, they rebelled against him at the Red Sea. Even so, he saved them to defend the honor of his name and to demonstrate his power. That's a whole message in and of itself. Verse 9. He commanded the Red Sea to dry up. He led Israel across the sea as if it was a desert. So you rescued them from their enemies and redeemed them from their foes. Then the water returned and covered the enemies. Not one of them survived. Then his people died. Let me paraphrase really quick. Everybody in the room, most people in the room, probably have heard of the Red Sea account. The children of Israel were running, they were on the run, they had just got freedom out of being captive by the Egyptians for years. They were fleeing out of Egypt. They got to this body of water known as the Red Sea. They stepped in front of us and said, "Oh no, what are we gonna do?" As they begin to say that, the Lord began to part the sea and he made the foundation as if it were desert.
They begin to run across to the other side. And as they were, the Egyptians were right behind their back, trying to chase him, to captivate him again, to get them to come back into slavery again. And as the Egyptians were in the middle of the sea, the Lord literally took the sea and swallowed them up. And the Bible just said here in Psalms that not one of them survived. After the Israelites were on the other side and they saw what the Lord had just done, right in front of their eyes, they begin to praise the Lord. They begin to thank God. They begin to shout and rejoice. But in 13, it all changed. In verse 13, it says, "Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done." They just saw this miraculous moment. Yet how quickly they forgot what he had done. I want to move down just a few verses to verse 19. Verse 19, "The people made a calf at Mount Sinai. They bowed before an image made of gold." Listen to this, verse 20, "They traded their glorious God for a statue of a grass-eating bull. They forgot God their savior, who had done such great things in Egypt." This morning, the Hebrew idea behind forgot isn't merely having a momentary mental lapse. Biblically, forgetting God often describes living, listen to this, without conscious regard for what God has done.
So it's not just men, I forgot the trash. It's living without conscious regard, without the eyes of our heart fully open to who God is and what he's doing on our behalf. You know, several years ago, my wife and I, we had just started having kids after a few years of marriage. And down in the South, you have one kid and typically your wife's like, all right, we need a bigger place. We got to get a bigger house. We got to get a bigger house. I don't know how it is up in New York, but where I'm at, we got to get a bigger house. So I says, okay, we'll get a bigger house. We're starting to grow our family. And so ultimately, we sell our first home. We buy another home three months after the sell of our first home, I get a demand letter from a law office. And this demand letter is essentially saying, hey, we've had some stuff that we've just discovered in the house and so the new owners are wanting to sue you. Well, I started thinking, man, no, this isn't cool because I know that we gave them ample time to bring in their inspectors to look at the house. We brought inspectors and on our side looked at the house and we closed on it. Everybody was in good faith, thought everything was fine. Well, I wrestled on for about two, three months with this.
God, what are we gonna do? They keep sending more demand letters to us. We're gonna sue you, sue you, sue you, all this kind of stuff. And my wife, she has this idea, she says, hey, don't you have that really close friend that's an attorney? Well, I have a really close friend. I'm talking about me and this guy, we talk probably two, three times a week. We're not just acquainted, it says, we talk all the time, we're friends, we're doing life together in a real way. She said, why don't you reach out to him and see what his opinion is, see what he would recommend. I reached out to him and the matter was completely dissolved and resolved in 72 hours. What happened? I had been talking to him for the three months that I was in talks with the initial law firm that was trying to sue us, but I was living without regard for who he is. I was living without regard for what he was capable of doing. The authority that he was doing. How he could get to the bottom of things, especially in legal matters. Oftentimes, this is the way I live with the Lord. I'll walk around and I have a cognizant understanding of who Jesus is, but I will live without regard that he's here in this room right here and now.
This morning, you might say, bro, you are going on and on about remembering, but the half of that verse says, don't forget the benefits of the Lord. What are some of the benefits, man? What are some of the benefits? Well, I'm glad you asked. In Psalms 103, there's 22 verses and they are action-packed with multiple benefits per each verse. Here in this moment, I want to declare some of those benefits to our heart and to our spirit. In Psalms 103, verse three, he reveals that he forgives our sins and he heals our disease. Him forgiving our sins has literally made a way for us to have this moment right here, that we could come in boldly, Hebrews 10 says, to his throne boldly and have friendship and have fellowship with who he is. At the end of that verse, he says, he heals our diseases. I don't know if anybody in this room has ever had a sickness come on them. The doctors couldn't get to the bottom of it, but you've seen the miraculous hand of God. He promised to step in and heal us. I need the benefit of salvation and the benefit of healing and he promised he would do that. In verse four, he redeems us from death and crowns us with loving, tender mercy. I don't know about you, man, but I've been around people before and they've had a, I told you so, type of attitude
where they'll give us some lenience, they'll give us some grace, but it's gonna come at a cost. Like, they go remind you every day how much if you would have done it their way and it would have been better. With the Lord, he says, I don't operate that way and he's the only one that's found perfect. But he said, man, I am going to give you tender mercy. Tender mercy, I'm not even gonna bring up the stuff that I can point out that you should've done and you should've listened to me. I'm not even gonna go there because I want to operate in tenderness. I need that benefit as a human. I need that benefit. In verse five, he fills my life with good things. Listen to this and renews my youth. I'm traveling, I'm trying to fulfill the assignment of God on my life, doing all this stuff. I'm trying to love my kids well. I'm trying to love my wife well. Living a busy life. There's so many in this room this morning. You were just that fashion week, this week, you're on Wall Street work and everybody in this room is living busy lives. How many is glad that we get a God that renews our youth? It's a benefit of the Lord. And verse six, he gives righteousness and justice
to anyone that's treated unfairly. This morning you might have some family members that are trying to accuse you of things. You might have a coworker that's trying to lay something out against you. You might have people that are talking and saying and doing. Know this family, you have a defender that is working right now on your behalf. You have a defender in the person of Jesus and he's making war, he's defending you. Even as we speak, no matter what they say, no matter how they're talking about you, he's defending you as we speak. Again, I need a God like that. He's slow to anger. He's filled with unfailing love. He's not ready to throw fireballs at us. But he says, no, I'm actually the exact opposite. I'm filled with love and my love doesn't waver. It's unfailing, verse 10. He does not punish all of our sins. Now, for me, that's a massive one. Could you imagine if the Lord punishes us for everything we do wrong? We would constantly live under the punishment of the Lord. He says, I don't operate like that with my children. I don't function that way. In verse 13, the Lord is a faithful father to his children, tender and compassionate. In verse 14, he knows how weak we are.
He remembers we are only but of dust. This is why he doesn't constantly punish us over and over because he realizes and recognizes, I've formed them from dust. Verse 17, "His salvation extends to our children's children." Is there any mothers and fathers in the room this morning? And then, how many is glad about that? That His salvation extends, not just only to me, the covenant that I'm walking in with God, actually extends to my children's children's children. The benefits of God, in Psalms 23, as a shepherd, He offers provision, rest, restoration, guidance, protection, and His presence. In Psalms 84, He is a son and a shield, and He will not withhold any good thing from us. It's never a moment where His motives get weird with us. He's a father and He says, "I always want them to have the best." In Romans 8, He intercedes for us, nothing can separate us from His love. In Ephesians 1, He said, "We are chosen, adopted, accepted, redeemed, forgiven, given and inheritance and sealed with the Holy Spirit." These are benefits of the Lord. And family, this is only about four chapters in the Bible. If we look from Genesis to Revelation, we would find that there is thousands of benefits of yielding and doing things God's way, remembering the good things that He has in store for us. I was on TikTok a few days ago, and saw this pastor talking, and saw us intrigued. I stopped scrolling, and I began to look and listen to a story. And this story really was provoking. It really made me ask some questions. You begin to say, "Man, I've pastored for 25 years, and I started feeling pressure from ministry." He said, "It got overwhelming, and I wanted to get out." And so I took a step back from ministry, and I said, "You know what? I'm just going to resign.
I'm going to step down, but I'm not going to stop believing. I love Jesus, but I just need a break from His people." And so he stepped down from the church, and he would step back even further month after month after month after month. One day his friend called him and said, "Hey, man, I hadn't seen you around in months." He said, "You told me that you just needed a break from ministry, not God Himself." And the pastor shot back to him and said, "Hey, man." He said, "I'm actually done with that whole chapter in my life." He said, "I'm not a Christian anymore." He said, "I don't believe anything I was preaching. I'm done. I'm out. Don't call me about this again." The question that started stirring on the inside of me was how do you preach 25 years, a truth and a message, and one day wake up and say, "I actually don't believe any of that anymore." Now he has a whole TikTok page dedicated to religious drama or religious trauma. How do you wake up one day and say, "I am totally out. I've given my life for the last two and a half decades, and now I'm totally out?" I asked myself this question as I examined the children of Israel. How do you get to a point where you see a body of water open up and you see your enemies then swallowed up in this water to where the Bible even says, "Not one survived." The Lord was letting the Egyptians know his dominance and how serious he is about his children. You see all of this in real time and then several verses down. You still find yourself looking and entertaining the idea of bowing to a gold I asked myself these questions this morning because I say, oh Lord, if this has happened to these individuals, then there's a chance it could happen to me. There's a chance that I could find myself
going as hard as I can for years declaring the goodness of God. And then at a point of disbelief, this is what led me on the quest for this message. Lord, what is the remedy and the safeguard against this? How do I preserve myself, my family lineage? How does this happen? That I don't wake up one day saying, man, it was a good run. And the word that I heard from the Lord overwhelmingly was Ryan, remember. If you'll remember, if you will make it a conscious effort to live with regard of who I am, if you will be intentional about leaning in all the days of your life, and remember, remember my goodness. Remember when you didn't have any money, you didn't have two nickels to rub together to get gas, but I've made a way for your life. If you'll remember all the stuff that went on with your family drama and how I redeemed your story, if you remember constantly, if you remember the encounters that you've had with me, late in the midnight hour, you're sitting in your room and you're overwhelmed by my goodness and my peace and my presence, if you will constantly set your heart to remember, you will safeguard against disbelief. This morning, as I study the scripture,
as I look at patterns in my own life and other people's life, the two main things I see at war constantly. Coming after the affect sins of my heart for Jesus is the spirit of disbelief and forgiveness. The spirit of disbelief and forgiveness. And this is where the Lord laid it out to me. Small seeds of forgiveness is the fast track to disbelief. Small seeds of forgetfulness is the fast track to disbelief. So this pastor, 25 years preaching, didn't wake up one day after standing in a pulpit and just say, I'm out. Little by little, he was pushed off of positions. Man, I used to think that God was a healer, but I actually don't know anymore and I'm pushed back. I used to think that God was able to provide, but man, I hadn't seen it in a really long time and I can't remember the last time he did for me and he's pushed back off that position. Man, I used to think that God would actually save us from our sin, but I don't know that he will. I just haven't seen it in a long time and I can't remember the last time he genuinely saved somebody that was far out where I've actually gotten to see their life up close in person. I'm pushed back from that position. (silence) Over and over and over again. He's pushed back and he's pushed back
and he comes off of one thing that he held fast two for years and he comes off another thing that he held fast two for years and he comes off another thing that he held fast two for years until he's at the place to where he stands up and has the phone call and he says, I actually don't believe any of it anymore. (silence) That all that I am. About two weeks ago I was in the place of prayer and I just started praying and thanking God for the cross. I started thanking Him that He made a way that He saved me from myself. I started thanking Him that He even bore stripes in His back and was pierced in the side from my healing. I started thanking Him that He got up and He rose out of the grave. He defeated death hell in the grave and I just started intently praying on the work of the cross for about 30 minutes and the more I would pray the more my spirit would come in alignment with what I'm praying. And then I shifted from praying about the cross into thanking God for the blood and what He did on Calvary's Hill and what the blood means for us, how it tones us from sin, how it washes us wide as snow, how there is no spot and blemish in us when the Lord looks at us because His blood covers us. And I would go on and on and on thanking Him for the blood and thanking Him for what He was doing through the blood and how He made a way. In my spirit we would become more and more aligned with what I was saying and what I was declaring and then I started praying and thanking Him for His presence. I started thanking Him. I said Lord even now I can feel you come in. I can feel you enter this room. He's here even in this room this morning. We can feel Him in this room and as I begin to pray that way I'm telling you my spirit became aligned. It became aligned and the eyes of my heart fully responded to the Lord. Something broken me and I started weeping uncontrollably before the Lord and had this wild encounter with
God because I started remembering the benefits of the Lord and everything that He did. And so this is where the message was birthed this morning out of a place of prayer and I'm telling you I've watched this principle over and over and over and over and over again good company. It works over and over again. When I remember I become tender. When I remember I become tender and there's some guys in the room. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah. When I remember I become tender. If you're a man in this room you said man that word tender. It just sounds feminine. I don't know about it. I'm here to tell you my brother. It's the most masculine thing that we can do as men as become tender, vulnerable, yielded, open. You know some of the most tender places on our body like our ear right? Does it it's cartilage? Does it have a bone? And you pinch your ear low right? And you feel the pain a lot quicker. And that's the point of tenderness. That when I'm tender I respond quicker. I respond to this man quicker. I've been praying all morning. I've been praying all night to stand at the hotel last night. Tell this funny story. And I went down to the lobby. And man I just started praying. I had my headphones in. I was tired of sitting in my room. Was pacing back and forth. And these people from some sort of fashion show I think came in and they were just hanging in the lobby. And man they started looking at me like a crazy man. Like what are you doing bro? I'm just pacing around. I'm going for it. Just declaring the goodness of the Lord and thanking him for what he's going to do this morning and all the stuff. And I'm telling you even in that moment I felt the undeniable presence of the Lord when my heart was tenderized before him. I just even hear the Lord saying even in this moment He's given memory to us as a gift. He's given the ability to remember as a gift. So if you're in this room this morning can you give the people space to remember. Give the people space to remember. And so here in this moment, if you don't mind, would you just close your eyes? And would you
begin to remember the goodness of the Lord? Maybe He takes you back to a moment to where, to where your marriage was on the brink of being over. And He stepped in rescued. And He healed the marriage. Maybe He takes you back to a moment where, where a family member did something they had no business doing and it's left scars and it's left trauma for years. But He's going to remind you how He's brought you from a mighty long way, even emotionally. Maybe you're in this room and you've seen the faithfulness of the Lord, even on your job, how He continues to give you a push-up, how He continues to have you move up the ladder in your company. When you started doing nothing, you had no influence, you had no power whatsoever. Maybe He overwhelms you with His blood this morning, just just remembering the work of the cross and the power of the blood. Maybe you had a hard past and you did life your way and you was you was slinging some things, you had no business slinging, you was doing some things, you had no business doing. But maybe He takes you back to that place mentally today to remind you again that what He did in that moment He actually wants to do over and over and over in your life. This morning, let's remember, let's become tender and then respond and then respond. When we remember properly, there is a response. There is a response. Desperation has a sound. Desperation has a sound. So can you just set your heart on the Lord? Can you set the eyes of your heart on Jesus this morning and just remember? And as you as you get a revelation of who He is and it begins to take things back in your memory, would you just begin to respond? Whether it's clapping, whether it's crying, whatever it may be, I'm not telling you how to respond, I'm just saying respond. I just want to give you space this morning to respond. Thank you, Jesus. We remember? We remember all you've done. (humming) (humming) (humming)
(humming) (humming) (humming) (humming) (humming) (humming) Hallelujah. Just feel the presence of the Lord in this room this morning. If you're in the room and you say, man, I just need prayer. I need prayer that the Lord would would free my mind. It's actually hard to remember. It's actually hard to look at what I've seen him do or what I remember him doing in the past. My life, my past is so weighty. It's so heavy. If that's you in this room this morning, I am going to ask you to make a bold move. in this house this morning. There's freedom in this house. There is for so many a line drawn in the sand this morning to say we're not going back to casual way of living, but we are going to intentionally lean in to be reminded over and over of who you are. If that's you in this morning, I'm just gonna count to three and just be bold. Just come up to this altar. I wanna pray for you. Our team wants to pray for you. I really do believe that there's freedom in this moment. I feel the Holy Spirit so strong here in this moment. One, two, three, come on, come on.
If that's you this morning, just come on. Just come on wherever you're at. Just come on, the Lord is gonna begin to free mindsets. Yeah, come on, gonna begin to free hearts. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Hallelujah, Jesus. Come on, come on, we'll wait for you. Come on, come on, come on. Hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah, hallelujah. The enemy's even pushing on people. He's doing this all across the country. So this isn't a prophetic word. It's just something I know intuitively. He's pushing people on a mind level, on a mental level. He's pushing them. He's trying to push them up against the wall. He's trying to push them up against the wall. And the reason he's doing that is because he wants to pervert the thing that God is actually wanting to use in your life, which is remembering his goodness. He wants you to remember everything else. All the scars, all the pain, all the stuff. And God said, no, no, no, don't even go there. Just remember my goodness. All you gotta remember is my goodness. Come on, somebody. All you gotta remember is my goodness. That's the only thing I'm asking you to do.
And if you'll keep my name and who I am set before you, I'm telling you, no attack mentally from the enemy will be able to withstand what the Lord is doing on the inside of you. Hallelujah, Jesus. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Come on, Jeremiah. We'll just sing this right here. We'll just seal this moment with this song. Can you sing it with us?
