Welcome to Ramos Sunday. My name is Victor Martínez Pastor of Crossroads en Español and we are very happy that you have decided to join us for what is the beginning of the most important week in the history of humanity. This week begins in a very particular way. The King of the Universe decides to enter the city of Jerusalem in a humble way, in a burrito, to not impose himself, but to invite us to follow him on his journey to death and his resurrection that he would do for you and for me. This week we have many events that we want to invite you to explore, to reflect, and for that we have created many different opportunities so that you can join us. These are a prayer in the morning from 7.15 to 7.30 in the morning, standard time, where our community gathers by Zoom, cameras off, simply wherever you are, to listen a little more about what God may want for us during this time. Also, this week, specifically because it is Holy Week, we will have an opportunity to worship in English and Spanish during the week from 7.30 to 7.50 in the morning. You can find more information on our page at crossroads.net diagonal espanol or you can also find this information on our networks on Instagram or Facebook, where we will gladly welcome you to our community, especially during this very important week. We want you to hear about what God wants for you today as we discuss about the Sunday of Rames and the invitation that God has for you today. We are happy that you are with us. The host of angels in the sky Look down with sad and wandering eyes To see the approaching sacrifice Ride on, ride on in majesty, yeah Ride on in majesty Ride on in majesty Ride on in majesty, yeah Ride on in majesty Your last and fiercest strike is now The father on his sapphire throne Awaits his own anointed son Ride on, ride on in majesty In a lowly pulp crowd on today
Ride on in majesty Ride on in majesty Ride on in majesty Ride on in majesty Ride on in majesty Ride on in majesty In a lowly pulp crowd on today Mira, tu rey viene hacia ti, humilde El rey de reyes, con sus ángeles detrás Aquel que es el verbo, nació en verdad La cabeza de todo cielo y tierra Entró a la ciudad con su corazón completamente expuesto Bajo y manso, dispuesto a humillarse Y a morir por amor Esta es la imagen paradójica del humilde Humble King Salvador To understand the resurrection, to understand the greater week, to understand Jesus in essence, you must assimilate this image of yours. The Lord of the heavens, crowned with glory, King over kings, Lord of lords, name over name, crowned with power and glory, and with a humble and meek heart. If you ignore his heart, you will never know him. Why would you do that? If you do not see his mind, you will not be changed, nor will you feel his power. We need to see both sides. Today, on Sunday in Ramos, we observe the self-portrait of the humble and meek King Salvador, with a tender heart and a fixed face like the pedernal, determined to die for you. Before we continue, let us pray and ask God to help us see that image. God, I ask you to give us eyes today to see, as you say, that we can see the complete and total image of you, your mind and your heart, united in this scene of yours, entering the city mounted on a donkey.
Amen. Amen. What a good song. My God! That was an old hymn that our band re-elaborated slightly, in case you did not notice, incredible. And speaking of that, there is a complete creative team behind the scenes in Crossroads. They have worked a lot for us. They organized the whole journey, making today's experience the Holy Week, Thursday, Easter. I thank them. They are very humble, very grateful, very happy for the hard work they do. Now, this image of Jesus is fundamental. We begin Holy Week with Sunday in Ramos. Jesus entering the city on a donkey. And I want to be direct from the beginning and say that it is strange. It is very strange. If you do not react to Jesus on a donkey, it is because you are normal. It is strange. He is on a donkey and people wave palm branches. Then they put them under him so that he can enter the town. What is happening in this image, and yet, and yet it is a critical image that we will not understand anything about the rest of Holy Week if we do not understand this simple moment. This paradox, I think. Matthew 21, we read the beginning. I will go to verse 5. It says, Look, your king comes to you, humble, humble. In this line is the mind and heart of Christ exposed. Two things that should not fit, power and humility. Humility, the humble king, ready to die.
If you want humility, fill a basketball hoop. That would be my advice. I thought of making a family league, just me, Sarah and the three children. And part of why I wanted to do that is because I thought I was going to win very easily. I love basketball. Unknown fact, I played basketball. You do not believe me. Here is a picture of me. I played basketball and made a poster of Mooxie Boggs, the lowest of the NBA, 5 feet and 3 inches on my wall. It's true, I love basketball with Georgia Tech. We were in the national championship. I thought I would win. After the first round, my key was at 16%. That's terrible. That's not good. Meanwhile, my daughter, Gracie, who knows nothing, has never touched a basketball in her life. But it's better to investigate. She is at 97%. What? Humiliated? I'm humiliated for this. I made my bracket, so it's a bit of my fault. I made my bracket. Jesus made this portrait of himself. This portrait of Jesus in El Borrico is a self-portrait. In fact, there are four accounts of the story in the four biographies of Jesus. One of them is in the book of John. John himself was a witness of this moment. And at the beginning of his gospel, he wrote this about Jesus. He said,
Without Him, nothing that has been done was done. John says, Jesus is the Word of God. And if you go back to Genesis, you will discover that God did not create things just by thinking them. He could have done it, but He did not. He did not form them with His hands. Instead, He spoke, and the reality arose. And the Scripture says that the One who pronounced the Word is Jesus Himself. And 500 years before the Word entered Jerusalem, mounted on the donkey. That same Word whispered these words to the ear of the prophet Zechariah. Zechariah 9, 9. Rejoice much, daughter of Zion. Shout with joy, daughter of Jerusalem. Here your King comes to you. He is just and brings you salvation. He is humble and is mounted on a donkey, on a chicken. This is the self-portrait of Jesus, the Collision of the King of Kings, who does not put himself over anyone. If Jesus had titled this painting, He would have used these words, The King of Kings, who does not put himself over anyone. And this Collision, as I said, the Collision of the Supreme Power and the Supreme Humility, existing exactly at the same time, His mind and His heart united. Jesus not only made the painting hoping that we would see it. He wanted us to see this a lot. I mentioned four biographies of Jesus. In reality, they do not coincide much. There are four different accounts of witnesses of what happened. The one of Luke is a compilation of testimonies from many people. So there are more than four witnesses.
As in any life, if you interview four people about someone, you will hear different stories because each one caught the attention of something different. And there are about 120 stories and unique teachings of Jesus, distributed in those four gospels. Well, only ten of them appear in the four. And nine of those moments took place during the Holy Week. The first of them is this moment on the Sunday of Rames. By the way, for those who are fond of the Bible, the only one that is not part of the Holy Week is the feeding of the five thousand. Interesting. Interesting. Interesting. And that is why I would say that Jesus wants to make sure that we do not overlook this self-portrait. And yet, many of us do. Many of us omit it. And we do not omit it because we see a completely different version. We tend to omit it because we only see a part of it. I have been reading a lot of a book called, Gentile y Manso, El Corazón de Cristo para Pecadores y Sufrientes, by Dane Ortland. And in it he said this, The ecclesiastical heresies are not universally inverted representations of Jesus, but simply unilateral. So we tend to see one or the other thing. We see his head, the power of Jesus, or we see his heart, manly and humble for us, but we tend to ignore one of the other two facets. And if we do, we lose it completely. You do not end up with a half self-portrait that is half exact. You end up with something that is totally false. The great theologian J. I. Packer said it like this,
A half-truth that disguises itself as a complete truth becomes a total falsehood. To understand Jesus, you must see his head and his heart together. If not, you lose it completely. What is his head and what is his heart? We will start with the heart. The heart in Scripture is not how we use it. We use the heart as it shows everything it feels. And with that we mean that it is bad regulating its emotions. That is what in reality, no, it is not that. My emotions are not outward. The heart in the Scriptures is the nucleus that drives and motivates you. It is what determines what you do. The fundamental center of who you really are. And Jesus says that his nucleus is humble. Humble. Matthew 21.5 I am here, your king comes to you. Humble. In different translations, it will come out as humble, meek, humble. It is a Greek word that only appears three times in the whole Bible. Here in Matthew 21 and two times before, the first in Matthew 5. Where Jesus says that the meek will inherit the earth. It gives you a better idea of what this word means. Humble. Meek. Humble. And then in Matthew 11, 28 and 29, where he describes his heart. He says this. Jesus says, Come to me, all of you who are tired and overwhelmed, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble in heart. And you will find rest for your souls.
Luego llegaron a Capernaum.
You must be the last of all, and the servant of all. And the disciples react just as you do now, as if someone had thrown a gas, and no one would want to admit it. They are like, What? These are bad news. This is bad news. What? The use of power is to trample people? They are not happy with that. That was in Capernaum, in the north. From there, they go to the south, and it happens a second time. Like a week before Jesus entered Jerusalem in the donkey, this conversation about the greatest comes up again, but instead of arguing among themselves, two boys separate from the group, go to Jesus, and ask him to be the greatest. This is how Mark records it. Matthew, in fact, records the story as if it were their mother who goes and asks him for his name. Just a quick note for my younger friends than me, Generation Z, Generation Alpha, I just want, from the bottom of my heart, don't send your mother to ask your boss for a promotion. Don't do that. It won't work out. It won't work out. Your mother is a charming person.
It just won't work out. Trust me. So, this is what happens. Did you see that Matthew records this story? He says, Then the mother of the children of Zebedee, who are Jacob and John, came to him with his children, and, kneeling before him, asked him for something. And he said to her, What do you want? She said to him, Order these two of my children to sit, one to your right, and the other to your left, in your kingdom. Jesus answered, They do not know what they are asking for. She said, Tell them that my children will be in their high position. You know, Director of Operations and Director of Marketing, I don't know, Director of Finance, We don't care. As long as it starts with C and ends with O, that's all I want. Right hand and left hand. Would you give them to me? Make them the biggest. And Jesus said, You do not know what you are asking for.
Jesus knew. He was on his way to Jerusalem. He knew he was going to die there. He knew that he would have put on his right and left two other crosses, with these on them, hanging to die. He said, You do not know what you are asking for. You do not know. Now the other disciples hear this and get angry. They are very upset. I don't think it's because they think, Wow, how could they be so arrogant to ask for the best jobs? I think it's more like, Damn, I should have thought about that. Damn, now it's too late. He's going to give them to them. And then Jesus brings them together. And so the story goes. When the ten heard it, they were outraged against the two brothers. But Jesus called them and said, You know that the rulers of the gentiles exercise dominion over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It will not be like that among you. But he who wants to be great among you must be his servant. And he who wants to be the first among you
must be his slave. Even as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life in rescue for many. Look, what you must do with power is not humility in the world. You must exercise it over. And Jesus says, No, go below. The world says, Go high. Jesus says, Go low. Low. Which makes the place where he told this story very, very interesting. Now, this is one of the moments in which we know exactly where Jesus was when he shared these words with his disciples. Previously, I told you that he was to the north, in the Sea of Galilee, in the city of Capernaum. Marcos records these details. Then he says that he crossed to the other side of the Jordan. He descended on the path of the King and ended just on the other side of the Dead Sea from Jericho, at this exact point here, where the Jordan River flows into the Dead Sea. Now, this place is very significant for two reasons. First, it is the place where Jesus himself was baptized. The place where he dived under the water. The place where he publicly said, for the first time, to God, his Father, I submit myself to you and I put myself under your care.
I will give my life for you. And then two. This place, and I don't think it's a coincidence, turns out to be the lowest point on the entire planet. 1,412 feet, under the level of the sea. Do you think it's a coincidence that the one who created all things, including the geography of the planet, has spoken of this, precisely, in this place? I don't think so. Do you think it's a coincidence that the word was baptized, that he dived under the water here? I don't. But think about this. When he dives under the water for the baptism, he is literally, physically, putting himself under it. Lower than any...
Vaya, probablemente no recuerden mucho. Me divertía mucho, bebiendo mucho. No te has puesto bajo Él.
Él no te condena.
This, if yours is brown and dry, will look like yours in a couple of days. A couple of days it will dry up, it will become a shell, and it will be useless, except for one thing, a place to catch a spark and light a fire. Come on, give Him your heart, give Him your praise, give Him all the glory He deserves.

You know, I'm getting clearer and clearer. There are many things I don't know, but there is one thing I do know. The ideal place where I can be is prostrated on the ground under my Savior, because He is kind and He will lift me up. He will lift me up from my humble condition. He will crown me and give me His power and spirit to follow Him another day. If you want, take His palm. I encourage you to take it home. And let it be a living symbol that is marching in your house this week. A symbol for you and a reminder every day that the best thing you can do with your life is to put it at the feet of your Savior. Put it at His feet. Maybe you've never done that. If so, I want to give you a chance right now to do just that, to recognize Him as your humble King and Savior. If you want, use my words and pray like this. Say, Jesus, I put myself under You. Will you forgive me for my sins? Will you blot out and cover my sin? Will you reflect me in Your Holy Ghost to start anew? In Your name,
Amen. We want to exhort you to say yes, to say yes to our King, who has humbly and lovingly given His life for us. And you can do the same by answering with a yes to baptism. We want to accompany you during this important process in our lives where we can experience what God and Jesus have for us. You can send us an email to hola.crossroads.net where we will guide you and give you the next steps to accompany you on this journey. Join us during the week as we connect in community through prayer and worship. We hope to see you soon.
