Cuando Dios No Hace Lo Que Esperas || Victory Church

Good morning, Victory. How are you? Excited to be here, either in the living room, online, or in our overflowing spaces. Welcome to Victory. My name is Kurbin. I have the privilege of being the teaching pastor here, and I am excited today to immerse myself in a segment of the scriptures in the book of John, with which many of us are familiarized. It is the story of a man named Lazarus. Now, whenever we hear Lazarus, most of us immediately our minds go to that glorious moment of him leaving the tomb, responding to the healing and resuscitating power of Jesus. But how many of you know that on this journey, before reaching the moment of glory, we almost always have to go through a story? So that is what we want to do today. In fact, this story is so rich that we will take the next three weeks to talk about it and address different angles and truths that we want to extract from the text. But today, I want us to focus on the next few moments and observe two characters in this story. The sisters of Lazarus, Mary and Martha. And I want us to analyze some significant things. They had to go through and process everything before seeing the miracle of their brother, resurrected to life. Amen? So let's go straight to the point, for reasons of time. John 11, beginning in verse 1. It's a great fragment of text. Let's go in full. The Bible says that a man named Lazarus was sick. And he lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. Now, this is the same Mary who later poured the expensive perfume over the feet of the Lord and dried it with her hair. And her brother, Lazarus, was sick. So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus, saying,

Lord, your dear friend is sick. But when Jesus found out, he said, Lazarus and his illness will not end in death. No. This happened for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may receive the glory of this. So, although Jesus loved Martha, Mary and Lazarus, he stayed where he was for the next two days. Jesus said, I hear you, but I will see you when I see you. Returning to verse 17, let's go ahead here. So when Jesus arrived in Bethany, they told him that Lazarus had been in the tomb for four days. Bethany was only a few kilometers from Jerusalem, and many people had come to console Martha and Mary for their loss. Come on, a greeting to the small groups. But Mary stayed at home. Mary said to Jesus, Lord, and Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. Now, let's take a break and say this. I know that not everyone in this room can identify with the loss of a brother, so to speak, but everyone in this room can identify with the loss of a brother. Lord, if only you had intervened in this marriage, maybe we would still be together. If only I hadn't gotten sick, then I wouldn't be dealing with what I'm dealing with. If only you had saved the business, then I wouldn't be here in this financial crisis. Can I tell you something? In this life, it's not always a person who dies. It's not always a person who dies. It's not always a person who dies.

It's not always a person who dies. Can I tell you something? In this life, it's not always a person who dies. Often, it's our expectation that dies. Because we present ourselves to the Lord in these moments of great need and despair with an idea of how we think things should go, of what God is supposed to do, and how He is supposed to appear, and when He is supposed to appear. And that is the tension that I believe today. God wants us to live and inhabit, and to deepen in His Word, to see what He wants us to do. Because this is the reality. Before we get to Lazarus, first we must take a moment to sit down with the sisters and reflect on this question. How do people of faith respond when God doesn't appear the way we thought He would? It's a good question. So here is today's first thought. I think it's imperative that we first take to the Lord what we are feeling. Take what you feel. Now, understand this. Mary and Martha could not be more different. They could not be more different in terms of personality. Do you agree? Mary is an emotional person. She is empathetic. She is always at Jesus' feet,

whether in worship or in tears. In Luke 10, she is at His feet, listening to His teachings. While Martha is angry, taking this cornbread out of the stove, my question to you is, Maria is the one who, as the Bible says a few chapters later, breaks this bottle of costly oil to anoint Jesus. So every time Jesus appears, you can be sure that Mary will rise and run to meet Him. But I want you to read carefully what the text says, because the Bible tells us, here in verse 20, that when Martha received the news that Jesus was coming, she went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home. You see, Mary allowed her feelings to paralyze her. And she's not running to Jesus in this moment of pain. She's sitting at home, isolated. She's crying. And listen to me when I say, Church, it's incredible how pain has the ability to steal from us, the ability to look for the only one who is really capable of healing the wound in our heart in the first place. And there are many people here, even under the sound of my voice, or perhaps seeing us online, who, because they experienced a moment of disappointment at some point along the way, have allowed that disappointment to steal from them, to progress and move forward in their walk with God. They have left all hope on the table, and they are sitting at home, in this house, isolated and completely alone, just like Mary.

But can I tell you something? The Lord we serve will meet us right in the middle of our breakdown. Because the Bible says here that what happened next is something important. I want you to understand this. The Bible says in verse 28, that when Martha returned to Mary, He separated her from those who were in mourning, and said to her, The Master is here and wants to see you. And immediately she went to Him. So, church, if you are here today, and if you are burdened with a broken heart, if there is a mourning that you are still processing, and if you have questions that have made you doubt the healing power of God, let me tell you this. The Lord is calling your name. It is not a coincidence that you are here today. He is calling you. Look at your neighbor and say to him, Get up. Look at your other neighbor. Don't even look at your other neighbor. Say, Get up. You better behave. We have guests. Verse 32. So Mary finally arrives. And when she arrives and sees Jesus, she fell at His feet and said, Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. Now, listen to me. At this moment, Jesus could have answered in countless ways. Marla, do you realize that Jesus could have reprimanded her? Jesus could have felt disappointed. He could have felt frustrated.

But how many of you know that He did not do any of that? Do you want to know what else Jesus did not do at this moment? He did not put Mary aside to hurry to the miracle. He chose to stop and sit with her in her pain. The Bible says right here in verse 33, that when Jesus saw her crying and the Jews who had come with her also crying, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled. You see, some of us were taught, maybe not out loud. Maybe this was just a philosophy that we adopted and absorbed. But there are many people, especially Christians, who have been taught to believe, that if you really love the Lord as you say you do, and if you really have faith that moves mountains, then why are you sad? Then why are you upset? Why are you angry? Why do you have questions? But, my friend, I want to take a moment to reprimand that lie and return it to the well of hell where it came from. Because that theology is not found in the text. At this moment Jesus gives Mary permission to feel fear. And that same permission is given to us and is given to you and me today. Because, listen to me, church, to deny your emotions is to deny one of the attributes given by God that human beings make. Right? There are two things you need to know about Jesus and how he sees your feelings. One, here it is, he sees them. He sees your feelings.

I know that some of you guys will say, Brother, I don't have feelings. Brother, whatever. No. Now, the Bible says that he is close to those who are brokenhearted and rescues those who have their spirit shattered. The psalmist said that you bear the account of all my sorrows and you have collected all my tears in your womb. Listen to me. Jesus... I would tell your people today that not only do I see their feelings, but pay attention, I also care, right? Hebrews tells us that we do not have a high priest, that he is not able to compensate for our weaknesses. You will see, the beauty of the incarnation of Christ is that God, in his sovereignty, could have easily said, don't pretend to have brought the world into existence, to have separated and to have left us to our own luck. But the beauty of the incarnation is that the eternal king of all submitted to a breath, to breathe the same breath that he created, to be hungry, to be thirsty, to see me, to also experience pain. So, therefore, this is greater than just empathy. Empathy simply says, hey, I recognize your pain and I feel sorry for you. But we serve a high priest who is empathetic with us. He chooses to get into trouble with us and to be afflicted with us, to find ourselves in our pain. Let me tell you, it is the empathic compassion of Christ that moves him towards our pain, even when we try our best to hide it. So listen to me today, church. Do you have permission to feel? Two and a half years ago, you know, when my mom passed away, all of you, my mom was a strong woman of faith, and we prayed and prayed, and we believed that God would heal her on this side of eternity. But at the end of the day, I held her hand when she gave her last breath, and she went to be with Jesus. And can I be honest with all of you today? I had a lot of questions.

I had a lot of doubts. But, Kervin, you are a pastor. I don't care. I am a human being, just like you. And weeks after my mom went to be with the Lord, I was at a stage where, if I can be honest, I struggled with the idea of imposing my hands on someone else and believing in God for their health. Rest. And can I tell you something? At that stage, if it hadn't been for the pious community that God surrounded me with, come on, someone, if it hadn't been for some great men of God, some great women of God, who helped me to move forward and led me to the feet of the King, I don't know where I would be today. That's why community in small groups is so important. So listen to me. But there are some people who don't have that, and they stay in this place of disappointment, and frustration, doubt, and concern, and they allow these emotions to steal things from them that they know are true, and they stay isolated in this house, just like Maria, because they don't realize that having faith doesn't mean that you have to stop having feelings. Come on, you can trust in God and still cry. You can rely on God's promises and still struggle with questions. This is the tension we have to live in.

This is the tension. Listen to me. God, help me to feel what I need to feel. Because how many of you know that processing those emotions is part of your healing? That's why I go to therapy without apologizing for it. Let's do a little therapy, a little Jesus, honey. Are we ready? Everything I need is Jesus, but a little therapy helps a little. Listen. God, help me to feel what I need to feel while I don't lose faith in you. Because in the words of the great theologian, Candace Browington, listen to this. The same God who will find you at the top of the mountain of faith is the same God who will comfort you in the valley of frustration. Amen? So, how do people of faith respond to disappointment? Well, we carry our feelings with us. And then, secondly, we believe beyond what we can see. We have to choose to believe beyond what we can see. So, Maria, as you can see, is a person who feels deeply. Every time she sees in the Gospels, she is prostrated before the Lord. It's very emotional, right? But Martha, Martha. On the other hand, Martha had to be the older sister. She had to be.

Because she is logical. She is the thinker. She is the one who processes things. She gets involved in the details. She has the questions, right? The questions. Maria had the emotion. Martha had the questions. And in the same way, the emotions are good before God. The questions are good before God. So when Martha finds out that Jesus is on His way, Mary is there, weeping in a corner. Martha said, Okay, give me my sandals. Put your earplugs on, adjust everything. The Bible says that she ran to meet Him. But guess what? When she met Him, again, if you can feel the emotion in the text, she doesn't fall to her feet. There are no tears. She appears to confront Jesus. If you had been here, my brother would still be alive. Listen to me, this is an accusation. This is not someone who is humiliated and prostrated before the Lord. No, this is just another wounded soul, looking at God directly in the face and asking once again the same question that each one of us has asked at some point in our life. God, where were you when we needed you the most?

I want you to understand this important point. She asked the question, If you had been here, my brother would still be alive. But I know. You see, sometimes when you are in the middle of a storm, you have to wash your face and you have to look at yourself in the mirror. And as David said in the Psalms, Rejoice in the Lord, O my soul, for there will be days when you will not have the faith to hold on to the promises of God. And Mary, right here, this is what I love about Martha at this moment. Listen to me. She went from saying that if only accusing the Lord and in the next breath saying, But I know that God will give you everything you ask of Him. Come on, look at your neighbors and say, But I know. And this is what I love about Mary at this moment. You see, Mary is standing face to face with Jesus. Looking at a reality that she cannot deny. Her brother is dead. She does not minimize the pain. I am so tired and tired of Christians who see pain as something to run away from, and grief and sadness. We try to sprinkle a little Christian language on this, but can I tell you something? There is nothing good about burying a child. It's horrible. But somehow, right in the middle of the disappointment,

Mary is able to say, But I know that the Lord will do what only He can do. Do you see this tension that Mary, I keep saying Mary, please forgive me Martha, this tension at this moment with which Martha is struggling, in reality there is a psychological term for it. It is called cognitive dissonance. And this is the internal tension that we feel every time we experience something that clashes with what we believe. Like, I think God is good, but Lord, at this moment, this does not feel good. I think God loves me, but Lord, if you love me, why would you allow this to happen? I think God can heal, but why didn't He intervene for me? I want to say, come on, is there anyone who has lived in this tension before? Come on, is there a saint in this place who can raise her hand and say, I am living in her right now? We have all been there, living in this tension between faith and frustration. And Martha does not deny the pain she sees. She simply refuses to allow what she sees to become everything she believes. That is the difference. That is the difference. Now, I'm going to say a few things in the next few minutes. That will probably divide the audience. Maybe not, but I'm going to say a few things that, for some of us in this room, will challenge their theology. And even before this moment, Pastor Johnson and I talked this week about,

we always talk about the message and the nuances. And knowing that this message was coming, I said, Pastor, I need permission to go deeper. Because this is a lived experience, and I need to say a few things. And I'm going to say what he said, in a way that only Pastor Johnson Booby can say it. He says, brother, grab that thing by the neck, drag it into the middle of the room, and let's talk about it. So some of you will be thinking, wow, what do I do with this? But then there are others. If you have ears to hear and eyes to see, I think the Lord will give you a revelation that could simply change everything. Because this is the reality, church. You and I can't have a fruitful conversation about health, and how to overcome disappointment without... First of all, we have to address God's sovereignty. Okay? We have to talk about it. Okay? Let's go deeper. I hope you're taking notes. I have a lot of content here. Listen. Fundamentally, God sees what I can't see. He knows what I can't know and works from a perspective that I don't have. Come on, I think we have to say that together. Come on. One, two, three. God sees what I can't see. He knows what I can't know and works from a perspective that I don't have. Now, that sounds good, but when you're in the middle of a storm, we don't want to hear that. And the reality is that it's hard for us to submit to God's sovereignty

because we live on this earth and in our human experience. We're tied to this thing called time. We can't see the beginning from the end. Perfect example. We're right now in verse 21 and Martha is going through it right here in real time. But what Martha doesn't realize is that 23 verses later, she doesn't realize that her brother is about to get up from that grave. But we have the privilege of knowing this information. We have the opportunity to read the story backwards. But for Martha, when she's in this moment, listen, she has to live this forward. And so do you. And so do I. So if you come to this room today, with the spirit loaded, heavy, and overwhelmed in your soul, with the pain stealing the possibility of knowing the fullness of God, I want to encourage you. La peor inversión que hemos hecho porque tomamos una decisión basada en un momento de dolor e incomodidad. Odiaba ese colchón. Así que de nuevo, si estamos pasando por una tormenta y atribuimos lo que está sucediendo al carácter de Dios, entonces sacamos suposiciones y llegamos a conclusiones como no hay forma de que Dios pueda amarme. No hay forma de que Dios esté a mi favor. Aquí hay una importante, les voy a dar un adelanto. Aquí hay una mentira con la que la mayoría de los pastores y líderes de la iglesia tienen que lidiar. ¿Están listos para ella? Aquí está. Todo líder entenderá esta. We believe and know that it is His will to heal. And guess what? We believe and know that He is still in the business of healing today. How can you believe that? This is how. Because He is Jehovah Rapha. He is the God who heals His people. Now observe this. Maybe you don't know this, but Abraham is the one who gave the name Jehovah Jireh to God. In a moment of his provision, He says, You are Jehovah Jireh. God is the one who gave the name Jehovah Shalom. Moses was the leader who gave the name Jehovah Nisi to the Father whom we serve and love. But can I tell you, the name Rapha was not given to God by any man, no prophet, no leader. In the book of Exodus, chapter 15, verse 26,

we can see with total clarity how God Himself declared and decreed, with His own voice and authority over Himself, this eternal promise, I am the Lord, your God, the one who heals and restores to all His people. And as God is not a man to lie, if He has said it, we simply believe it with all our heart. We believe that God is a healer. We know that it is His will to heal. And we believe that He continues to heal today. But some of us will still say, I hear that, but I pray for health every weekend. And I keep fighting against these symptoms. I'm still fighting. Listen, friend, I will be the first to tell you that it is complicated to say the least. It is a challenge to understand where faith, health, trust, and all these things fit. I want to say, think about it for a moment. We have so much truth that we must balance. In one hand, we have the truth that through His wounds we were healed. And how many of you know that this will never change? And then on the other hand, we have to deal with the reality that we live in a broken world, that God gave man free will. Adam ruined everything, and guess what? You and I are not better. And then, with our feet, we have to do juggles. The reality that our faith does play a role in health. And I wish I had another arm. Because somewhere in this act of balance, we also have to remember ourselves. That even beyond our health and our things, God has a plan that is much bigger. Come on, Pastor Johnson, you call it the Gospel of the Metanarrative. It is bigger. It is a movement that has crushed insurrections,

and has survived kingdoms and dynasties of antiquity. A kingdom that knows no end. And that mystery, we are not aware of some of those things. In fact, Deuteronomy 29.29 says this. It says that the secret things belong to the Lord, our God. There are some things that the Lord has reserved for Himself. And listen to me, church. Some of these realities we will never understand until we are in eternity with Him. And listen to me, for everything else, for what we are going through. Faith, health, believe it or not. Why didn't it appear? Listen, it is not a formula that must be solved. Because if God were small enough to fit inside your intellect and your logic, then He would not be big enough to be worthy of worship. So listen to me. Also. Listen to me. So it is not a puzzle that we have to solve. It is a tension that we have to live in. A great mystery, but observe. But even within that mysterious tension, where we receive grace over grace, we must accept that you and I cannot dictate how, when, or where God decides to respond. It is a process that often escapes our control. We cannot. We cannot. Look at what the Bible says here. In verse 23, Jesus says to Martha, Your brother will be resurrected. And Martha said, Oh, I know. He will be resurrected in the resurrection, on the last day.

See, this is how I know that she is an older sister. She simply knows everything. No se le puede decir nada, pero Jesús le dijo, yo soy la resurrección, yo soy la vida. Vamos, quiero que reflexionemos sobre esto un minuto, porque muchos de nosotros hemos creído la mentira. Que solo porque no vemos la plenitud de su obra sanadora en nuestras vidas. Aquí y ahora hemos resuelto en nuestros corazones que no hay forma de que Jesús pueda ser el sanador que dice ser. Y algunos dirán, bueno, eso es un problema de fe. Yo digo que es un problema de eternidad. Y quizás hayas olvidado que Dios no está atado al concepto de tiempo al que tú y yo estamos esclavizados. Vamos, su nombre mismo es Alfa y Omega. Vamos, Él se sienta fuera del contexto del espacio y apoya su pie sobre la construcción del tiempo. Pero tú y yo, nuestras vidas literalmente giran en torno a los minutos y los momentos. Nuestras vidas giran en torno a segundos y estaciones. Y decimos con nuestra boca que vivimos para la eternidad, pero realmente vivimos nuestras vidas y construimos nuestra teología. Como si esta vida y esta carne fueran todo lo que existe. Pero, ¿cuántos de ustedes saben que hay mucho más? Vamos, esto tiene capas. Hay capas. Vamos, sigamos profundizando. Miren esto, en Hebreos, miren lo que, tengo muchas escrituras porque no quiero que todos ustedes vengan al vestíbulo a intentar pelear conmigo. Hebreos 10.14, miren lo que dice. Porque mediante un solo sacrificio, Él ha hecho perfectos para siempre a los que están siendo santificados. Noten esto, es la misma tensión. ¿Cómo puedo? Por un lado ser hecho perfecto para siempre, asegurado, pero aún así todavía estoy siendo santificado. Así que esto es clave para entender cuando se trata de sanidad. Miren esto, porque aquí está la verdad. Estamos hechos de tres partes, espíritu, alma y carne. Tu espíritu es eterno y tú, tu espíritu vivirá para siempre, en un lugar o en otro.

En el momento en que le dijiste sí a Jesús, ese momento de salvación, hubo una obra sobrenatural del espíritu que insufló vida en tu espíritu. Cobró vida para Dios. Y en ese momento, es ahí donde la Biblia dice que aquellos que han sido perfeccionados, de aquí es de donde obtenemos las escrituras que dicen que nadie puede arrebatar de mi mano a aquellos que aseguro. De aquí es de donde obtenemos las escrituras que dicen que Él es fiel para ver la culminación de la obra que comenzó. Nuestro espíritu es eterno y vivirá en sanidad eterna en la presencia de Dios para siempre. Ese es tu espíritu, ahora tu alma. Tu alma es lo que está siendo santificado. Es un viaje, es un proceso de rendición ante el Señor, permitiendo que el espíritu cambie y elimine cualquier cosa en nosotros que no sea como Él. Es un proceso llamado santificación. Te ganas una estrella dorada, santificación. Tu espíritu es eterno. Sus almas son una obra en progreso. Pero esta carne, estas células, estas palmas, en ninguna parte de las escrituras se nos dice que haya redención para nuestra carne. Es por eso que en Génesis capítulo 3 después de la caída que le dijo Dios a Adán y Eva. Del polvo has venido, al polvo volverás. Por eso hasta el apocalipsis vamos de principio a fin. Por eso en el apocalipsis cuando estemos ante el Señor en ese día de gloria se nos darán cuerpos nuevos. No hay nada más, escuchen bien. Es gracia sobre gracia. Es un regalo inmerecido. Y sin embargo a menudo nos apresuramos a acusar a Dios de fallarnos simplemente porque Él aseguró nuestro para siempre. En lugar de extender aunque sea temporalmente nuestro ahora. Es una perspectiva difícil de aceptar. Bueno pastores. I hear all that but it's still not right, it's still not fair. I prayed for my grandfather. I believed that God would raise him up here and now, and he's gone. Is it right? Well, young man, was your grandfather a believer? Yes?

Did he go with Jesus? Yes. Well, there comes a moment in which, after having lamented and cried, we have to get up and wash our faces, and we have to return to the Word of God and remember that Paul said that being absent of the body is being present with the Lord. Paul also said that living is Christ, but dying is gain. The psalmist also said that it's better to be one day in your atriums than a thousand out of them. And listen to me, I'm not trying to sound insensitive. If you're going through a grief, and if you're processing a loss, God knows that I would give anything to hug my mom one more time. I would give anything. But even if my mom could return to this broken and fallen world, I promise you that she, without a doubt, would say no. I promise you, and I'm going to tell you why I know. Even before she got sick, she said throughout her adult life, When I die, I don't want screams or moans. She said, put me on the ground and go somewhere and sit down. No, sit down, sit down. She said, I'll see you on the other side. A true eternity. Listen, grace over grace. Think about it. The last time I checked, the mortality rate for all human beings was, unfortunately, 100%. I'm just trying to free someone here, really. I know that some of you are struggling a lot right now. And I want to tell you that it's okay, it's really okay. The Holy Spirit is going to do what He needs to do in your hearts.

But listen to me, okay? Let me demonstrate. Forget about healing, let's not even talk about healing. Look at Lazarus, Jesus resurrected him from the dead. Does anyone know where Lazarus is? Have you seen him around here lately? His brother owes me money. No, listen to me. Because eventually, even Lazarus went to be with the Lord. Guess what? That healing, being free from this broken world, being free from sin and sickness. I mean, I'm talking about the tangible manifestation of sin and sickness in our body and in ourselves.
