Convierte tu Sufrimiento en Fuerza | Crossroads en Español
Tenemos buenas y malas noticias.
Nunca me sentí tan tonto.
It is very vivid because the platform of the trial, the Bema, is right in the main square of Filipos, it is still there. And we can see the remains and be where Pablo and Silas were when they were unjustly condemned and beaten and then imprisoned and it really shows the reality of that story. That is so great and in terms of that point of suffering of Pablo and Silas. And Rula, I would love for you to intervene because I think that word in your context can be important or feel different because you are a Christian in a place, but it is simply not common. And there is a level of suffering that you could experience as a follower of Jesus, if you want to talk about that. Here, for example, in Turkey, we, the Turkish Christians, generally, when we become believers, we are rejected by our families, by our friends, by our environment, right? I, myself, personally, was expelled from my house by my father when I made the decision to become a Christian and in this way we can truly relate also with the suffering that the primitive church had to endure. And it turns out to be an interesting point, perhaps, to point out that it is happening again, in the same biblical land, right? And so, when some of the young people of our nation, at the moment they decide to follow Jesus, could have the wrong idea that my life will be perfect. You know, I'm going to have everything my way, but no. As Christians, we know that this is not what Jesus said that
we would have. In fact, he said, take your cross and follow me, right? And we try to prepare them for the suffering that comes because we are not called to a life free of pain, free of suffering. I want to say, our Lord and Savior, Jesus suffered the most, so yes. That is, that is a good word right there, that we, our cause, is to take our cross. And you know what? The best place to go and see a man who did this, who took his cross and followed Jesus, is again to follow the life of Paul. So our next stop on the trip is to see where he suffered well, which is in Philippi. While he was in Asia Minor, modern Turkey, Paul experienced a vision of a man asking him, come to Macedonia and help us. So Paul, Silas, Timotheus and Lucas, who wrote Acts, traveled to Philippi, a city in Macedonia, now Greece. It is here, in Paul's second missionary trip, where the dramatic events recorded in Acts 16 take place. Lydia is baptized, Paul casts a demon on a slave and is arrested, beaten and thrown into prison with Silas, where they worship God until he sends a tremor to open the gates of prison and the guardian becomes a believer in Jesus. Later, Paul wrote the book of the New Testament of the Philippians to the church that was founded during his time here. Octavio was victorious and became the first absolute regent of the Roman Empire. Later, he changed his name to one that may seem familiar to you, Caesar Augustus. In the year 4 BC, Caesar Augustus decided that he would like to count the citizens in the entire Roman Empire and ordered a census, which made a young Jewish couple named Mary and Joseph make the long journey to Bethlehem. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, which fulfilled a prophecy from 700 years ago due to what happened right here. The history of this place is amazing. It has been seven years since Paul abandoned Tarsus, and those seven years have been extraordinary. Results everywhere, everything is going very well in Paul's race, which does not mean that there is no resistance. Why is it going so well? It is because Paul knows the secret to run and win the race, that of which he tells us in Romans 5, and we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our
sufferings, knowing that suffering produces resistance, and resistance produces character. Character produces hope, and hope does not embarrass us.
Yes, but more than the violence, it's that the suffering didn't have to happen. Pablo was a Roman citizen. This treatment wasn't legal for them.
You could do it to whoever you wanted, but Rome took its citizenship very, very seriously. Everything Pablo had to do before the first rod crossed his back was to say, Hey, by the way, I'm a Roman citizen. And none of that would have happened. Why didn't Pablo do it? Why didn't he defend himself? It's very strange. In any case, what happens next is that they take him to jail. They put his feet in the coffin and lay him face up. Those coffins would have been close to the ground. So he's literally lying face up on his wounds. And he does something unusual. He starts praising God. That's how the story goes. Near midnight, Pablo and Silas prayed and sang hymns to God. And the prisoners listened to them. And suddenly there was a big earthquake, so the foundations of the prison shook. And immediately all the doors opened and all the ties were released. When the jailer woke up and saw the doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, thinking that the prisoners had escaped. But Pablo shouted loudly, Don't hurt yourself. No, we're all here. The jailer asked for lights, ran in and, trembling with fear, fell before Pablo and Silas. Then he took him out and said, Gentlemen, what do I do to save myself? Okay, there are many strange details in this story, right? I, that is, lay face up feeling a terrible and unspeakable pain. And Pablo thinks, Do you know what I will do? I will raise praises to God. And I will proclaim, sing so that everyone hears how great God is, how he has saved me, how he has rescued me, how he has set me free.
That's weird. And then the earthquake happens, the doors of the prison fall and Pablo decides to stay. Very strange, but none of those is the second detail that really bothered me about this story. The second detail that has bothered me is the question of the jailer. Sir, what should I do to save myself? Now, for us, we read many things in that question that may not be true. The jailer was Roman, probably a retired soldier, and in his mentality there was no notion of certain things that we could assume. There was no concept of what we call spiritual sin, or the need for eternal salvation, excuse me, justification, or how to be fair, not even our versions of heaven and hell and the afterlife. All of that was very, very different. And so what has bothered me is, where in the world did the jailer get this question? And then I realized. I had heard a slave scream something that morning. She said, These men are servants of the Most High God. They are proclaiming to you the path of salvation. Crazy. Then later, I imagine, the al-Qaeda in his office, and he listens to songs, and he leans over and listens, and the lyrics of the songs are about a God who saves, who heals, who frees, who forgives, and the dots in the mind of the jailer are connected. Why did Paul stay in the circle? Well, I think it's clear. Paul stayed in the circle because he received a push from God, that on this day his career involved staying firm and enduring suffering because of the kingdom of God. And that is exactly what happens. Because the jailer and all his family believe.
And so the story goes. And they said, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and all your family. And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all in his house, and he took them at that same hour of the night, and he washed their wounds, and he was baptized instantly, him and all his family. Then he made them go up to his house, and he served them food, and he rejoiced with all his family because he had believed in God. God used Paul's suffering to save, and it will be the same for us. We have to understand this idea when we begin to run our career in the way of God. Suffering is not optional on the way. It would have been great if Paul had said, Good news for you. for everyone. Stubbornness leads to perseverance, and perseverance leads to character, and character leads to hope. It begins and ends in calm. He did not say that. He said, it is pain. Pain is the first step. There is no following Jesus without voluntarily entering the circle of suffering. When I arrived years ago with Bob and I knew the places of this trip, this place, this stone, this circle, it was what most impacted me, because it is such a shocking image of exactly the invitation to the race with God. I will enter the circle, or I will avoid it. I will stay where it is comfortable and safe, and everything is under control. Or, will I trust God when He tells me to take the step and trust Him, even if it is uncomfortable, even if it is dangerous, even if it is painful, even if He tests me? Even if I do not know where to go, will I have enough faith in God to take that step into the circle? Welcome to Filipos.
We did our best to locate you in that ancient place where Kyle was. I am Allie Patterson. If you are new to our race trip, I am a pastor here at Crossroads, and I am with you. Who met with your group this week? Who did you meet with? Who did you meet with? Who did you meet with? Who did you meet with? Who did you meet with? Who did you meet with? We spent time talking about how the purpose of week one was to name the race. What is the race that you are immersed in? What is the path that you are on right now that you really feel that God is pointing to you? This is the one that I want you to have in your sight right now. Before continuing, I notice that I have been sick. Did anyone else get sick? Yes, I was sick all week. I know you will forgive me. If I use my handkerchiefs, pills or water, I'm sorry, I've done it once or twice, but we'll get through it together. So today we deal with the reality that no matter what race we have named, and there are as many races as there are people in our community who named their race this week, none of them will be easy. So today we deal with the reality that how we suffer will determine how we finish our race. Some came in knowing that suffering or pain took them out of the race a long time ago, trying to get back on track. Others named a new race. Hello, welcome. The water is warm. Today will be a preparation for what is to come. Suffering and difficulty, right? And others of us are right in the middle of it right now. All this topic. Let me remind you of a question I used to ask myself during the real races.
So the question I asked myself many times was, what am I going to do on mile 16? When I was 20 years old, I ran marathons. Which was one or two years ago. It's not that funny. I ran some marathons. I still love running. I haven't run a marathon in a long time, but I ran enough so that on mile 16, every time I had to ask myself, what am I going to do at this precise moment? Because mile 16 is a unique low point in the marathon race. Let me show you an image. Marathon, 26.2 miles. Point 2 is cruel and unusual, right? 26.2 miles. And on mile 16, it hurts, you have bruises, you ask yourself, why did I do this again? And then you see the mile 16 marker. And the calculation is really simple. You pass that mile 16 marker, you do the math, and you think, I can't possibly run another 10 miles. It's 10 miles more from here. It's something that blows your mind. And so, in every race, not just in the first one, where it took me by surprise, but every time, I passed the mile 16 marker and thought to myself, what do I do in the next period?
Me voy.
Me importan a mí. In the 16th mile, something else will make us move forward. It won't be the obsessive whirlwind about why all this started. Now, some of you are already angry with me about this. Okay, I can stand it. You think, okay, I can accept the fact that God, you know, brings some adversity to my life, but not this. You don't understand my story. This wasn't right. It just shouldn't have happened. And I don't know your story, I really don't, but I know Pablo's. I know the one we just heard from Kyle, and we can see in that story exactly where it originated. Let's go back to that for a moment. In Acts 16, there is a girl. She follows him for days and days,
and shouts because she has a spirit that possesses her. These men are of God. They know the way to salvation. And this is what it says, Acts 16, again. And she continues doing this for many days. Pablo, very upset, turned and said to the spirit, I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to get out of her. And he left at that very moment. So here we are. That is the beginning. Because it was just after that that the girl's owners got angry. They drag him to the market. He is accused, beaten, covered in blood, and thrown in prison. And that was the beginning. An annoyance and a liberation that could be argued that in the general panorama for that girl was perhaps the greatest kindness that she had ever received. And that was the beginning for Pablo. And yet, not a hint of bitterness. Not only in this story, but never, never in all of Pablo's journey and in all of his sufferings we get a hint of bitterness. If you read the book called Philippians, which is a letter that Pablo wrote later to these same people who are in this area with which he is dealing in this story of events. He writes them a letter when he has already moved. And he reminds them, do not forget, to rejoice in all circumstances. And the crazy thing about that letter is that it was written when he was in prison again, later, somewhere else. And it is one of the happiest letters in the Bible.
And if you read that letter, you can see that Pablo, not only not at that moment while he goes through Acts 16, but he never adopted any form of resentment for the suffering that began in this way and many other occasions in his life that were quite similar to this. And I think we assign people in the Bible, you know, they are in the Bible. They can do that. They are simply beaten and they sing praises. You know, I don't know. What do we tell ourselves? We tell ourselves that they are like special people. They are more holy than me. Of course, that's what he does, you know? It's Pablo. I don't think so. I think it is that Pablo was enough with Jesus for him to begin to understand, this is the beginning of something that you are going to transform in the life that you are presenting to me. That this is the direction. And that maybe with each new affliction, his mentality was like, oh wait, this is the beginning of this arc. And then how can I hate him? I guess I'm in again, Lord. Maybe it was that Pablo began to adopt that mentality. Now, one of my moments from 1016, which I will share in a moment,
was as if Pablo's had begun with a small irritation that turned into an act of kindness. Mine was as distant as possible from that. It was more like, your bad character led to bad choices that resulted in sin that almost destroys you.
No sé qué hacer. Si alguien me pregunta, simplemente responderé.
No sé qué hacer ahora mismo.
I love you Lord, and I lift my voice to worship you, O my soul, rejoice, take joy my King, in what you hear, may it be a sweet, sweet sound in your ear. Y simplemente comencé a cantar, regocijate, ¿estás bromeando?
La he cantado otras veces. ♪ I love you, Lord, and I lift my voice to worship you ♪ ♪ Oh, my soul, rejoice, take joy, my King, my King ♪

And the question is, How does weakness, pain, or difficulty affect your path in your career? And the goal to which we will help each other is to find Jesus in that space. To find Him in that space. And in doing so, I want you to remember the words that Jesus Himself told Paul. Paul went to Jesus at one point and said, I have this thorn in my flesh. It is painful. I want you to get rid of it. I want you to take it away from me. And Jesus said to him, My grace is sufficient for you, because my power is perfected in weakness.
