Have you ever felt that God has forgotten you? If we haven't met, my name is Victor Martinez and I want to thank you for joining us here watching this video, continuing our series, Stories of Origin. And today we are going to listen to Hannah, where she will take us to study the story of Abraham and Sarah, a family that received a promise from God to have a large family in which the whole world would benefit. However, that promise took a long time to be fulfilled. I don't know what things in your life you have felt that it is too late for God to give you what you have desired or need. However, we see how God has a plan and sometimes His time is a little different from ours. But in that waiting time, there is a process for us to grow, develop, and even become more deserving of what will come one day. So we want to encourage you to continue to be there, waiting and allowing God to continue to work in you while that which He is waiting for comes. For now, let's see Hannah so that she can take us a little more in detail to this story. This could be the best story of origin ever told. Abraham and Sarah, whose obedient steps change history forever. Welcome to Crossroads. I'm Hannah Driscoll and I'm excited to be with you in this series talking about these heroes of faith and their stories of origin. But before we get to that, I think it's important that I tell you a little bit about who I am.
And part of that is that I'm not someone who likes fashion or follows the trend, so to speak. But I found a trend that I really love. It's a TikTok trend. And before I tell you what it is, I need some support. I need to know. Can you help me? Good. Good. Thank you. I know you didn't answer that in Lexington. So, Lexington, are you going to help me? Yes. Good. I can't tell you because it requires you to participate, but trust me. It's not a lot to ask. It's very simple. It's called laughter therapy. Does anyone know it? Laughter therapy is basically where you're going to pretend to laugh and we'll find that when we pretend to laugh, we trick the brain into laughing for real. Remember you promised. You wrote it down and everything is being recorded. You said you'd help me. I remember you said it. You're going to help me. You just have to repeat after me. Come on. Ha. Good. That was good. Okay. Ha-ha. Now try a ha-ha.
Good. That worked. Good. Let's do it differently. Ha. Ha. You look stupid. Good. Let's do a ha. Good. That really worked. And if it didn't, this will work for sure. Miren a este bebe tan lindo. Oh, Dios mío. Bien. Because they have to constantly question what is real and what is false. Can I trust this person who speaks? Because are they just saying something that they heard from somewhere else? Look, in an era where mistrust is normalized, it is popular to wait for disappointment and it is frankly offensive to be optimistic. We are in a position where everything comes to a critical point
of, will we be cynical? Because that cynicism, ultimately, will not only cause a little crack in our faith, but it can lead to destruction. But it is good to know that cynicism did not arise just for us. We are not the only cynics. We see cynicism all the way back in the Bible with Sarah. The Bible shows Sarah as a character with a certain distrust. In the hall of faith, a lot of people are mentioned. And most women are mentioned in that group of many others. That says it all. But Sarah is called by her name. And we see Sarah qualify to be in the hall of faith much later in life than many of the other characters. Sarah, when we think of our heroes, sometimes we think of them reaching their early heroism in life, right? Modern heroes like Spider-Man. He's a teenager. But Sarah, when she qualifies to be in the hall of faith, she's not 20 years old. She's left behind her 30 years of coquettishness and prosperity. She's left behind her 40s. She's left behind her 50s. We know Sarah when she's 65 years old. And we know her as Sarai. She appears as Sarai. So when I say Sarai, today I'm talking about Sarah.
They're the same person. We'll get to that in a second. She appears with a man named Abraham, better known as Abraham. And they appear because God starts talking to Abraham, and he responds, this is how it happens. Genesis 12, one says, God said to Abraham, leave your land, your family, and your father's house, and go to the place that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you. I will make your name great, and through you others will also be blessed. Go to verse four. Abraham went, as the Lord had told him. And verse five says, boom, that's where we meet her. And we meet her in this context with her husband embarking on this transcendental journey. Before the journey, the Bible mentions a chapter before. And it's very easy to miss this part because it mentions it at a time where it only lists a bunch of lineages. And those parts of the Bible are read as a processed food label. It's long, boring,
and you can't pronounce the names. What is riboflavin? I don't know. But Sarah appears on the scene. And this is what it says at the end of that lineage. It says 11, 30. But Sarah was sterile. She had no children. Now, this is the first mention. And it's a little anecdote that's put in the lineage. Normally, the lineage is just a name, death, and age. But it chose to list that Sarah was sterile and had no children. I think it's unfair. They could have said anything about Sarah. That she was beautiful. She was a good wife and faithful to her husband. She was someone who said what she thought. But no, they chose to put this little anecdote. And this anecdote would follow Sarah throughout all the time that she is mentioned in the Bible and throughout history. And it's also the anecdote that would make it almost impossible to believe that God would promise this sterile woman a child. But he does. So here is the summary version of what happened. God calls Sarah's husband to a place that they don't know, right? Genesis 12. And then, on several occasions,
he seems to promise descendants and children. That's Genesis 12, 13, and 15. And he does it when Abraham is 75 years old and Sarah is 65. And the first time he talks to them, that's their age. But then, several times later, he keeps saying this over and over again. And I don't have time to go into the whole story, but I just know that there's smoke and sand and stars, and it's incredible. Go read it for yourself. It only takes 10 to 15 pages, but God is trying to shout to Abraham, hey, you're going to have a baby. This story of 10 to 15 pages in your Bible has such an impact that we see it throughout the history of the whole Bible. And God is shouting to them, saying, hey, you're going to have a baby. You are going to have a child. And God is shouting to them, saying, hey, you're going to have a baby. Now, Abraham and Sarai were married, so I guess they talked a little. And God is shouting to them, saying, You know, you would think that Abraham probably told his wife, Hey, look at this. This God, his name is Yahweh, came to talk to me and said, Let's have a baby. This happened when Sarah was 65 years old, and she probably thought, Well, you're a little crazy. But the first time Sarai heard it for herself, she was 89 years old.
In Genesis 18, it says that the Lord says, Then the Lord said, I will return the next year, and by then Sarah will have a son. Sarah was listening from the entrance of the store. Abraham and Sarah were already very old, and Sarah had stopped being able to have children. So Sarah laughed to herself and thought, Can I really have a son now that I'm old and my husband is too? I love this part of the Bible. Because God is not even talking to her. My daughter is spying, she is surprised and says, Who? Me? I'm not getting ready to have a baby. I've been through my pain. That's over. I'm done with that. Sarah basically says, Do you mean to say that that doesn't flow anymore? Nothing has been going on for a long time. I don't have the rule, period. How am I going to have a baby? She, this sounds crazy. And so, naturally, when someone tells you something that seems impossible or crazy, laughter is really a natural response, right? Because Sarah had already gone through the complete shame and the repeated disappointment of not having a child. So it is understandable that she laughed. You see, her laughter is so important because last week we talked about how, if faith is evidence based on trust, until now, Sarah's evidence was dead babies. Sarah's evidence was God's constant disappointment.
That's why when she laughs, it comes from a deeper place. She laughs from a deep place of not just discomfort, but disappointment. Sarah's laughter is like a gesture, like a, You're right. It's more like a, no. It's more like a, I don't see it that way. I wasn't born yesterday. Sarah's laughter is cynical. And Sarah's laughter is so deep and so full of cynicism that here lies the message that we must learn today, that cynicism is the enemy of faith. It's curious because we are trained to believe that doubt is the enemy of our faith. But doubt leaves you much more open than cynicism. And we see that God responds in a different way to doubt than to cynicism. Because hearing laughter when God said that impossible thing was not the first time he heard laughter. Abraham also laughed. In the book of Genesis, chapter 17, verse 15, God said to Abraham, You will no longer call Sarah and your wife, but Sarah. I will bless her, and through her I will give you a son. I will bless her, and nations will arise from her. Kings of peoples will come from her. Then Abraham prostrated himself on the ground, laughed and thought, Can a man of a hundred years have a son? And Sarah, with ninety years, gave birth. She gave birth to nineteen, but God said, No. Sarah, your wife, will give you a son, and you will name him Isaac. When God responds to Abraham, it's like a,
Don't worry, don't be afraid. I promise you that I will do it. Don't forget the promise. But listen to how he responds to Sarah, Genesis 18, verse 13. He says, Will I have a son now that I am old? Is there something impossible for the Lord? I will see you again next year, and by then Sarah will have a son. Sarah, full of fear, lied and said, I wasn't laughing, but the Lord answered her, Yes, you laughed. Now let's see the difference here. Doubt is, again, something funny because it leaves us open, and we learn that we can go from doubt to faith sometimes. When we do that, God does not respond harshly. He comforts him and says, It's okay, I'll take care of you. I can imagine him caressing his back and saying, I will do what I said I would do. Here is the promise. Don't forget the promise. But cynicism is much deeper than that. Sarah's response in itself contains contentment. Text of that, that will never happen. The answer of Sarah comes from a deep place. Correct. It's from a deep disappointment. And we know this because she uses the words worn out. And that direct translation of Hebrew is more like getting old. And when you get old, what we're talking about there is a garment. Sarah is saying, I'm already worn out.
My situation in life is that I'm done. No puedo ser usada para nada. No sirvo para nada en este momento. Y luego me dices algo loco. Quieres crear falsas esperanzas. No, estoy bien.
It gives us a false certainty, if we want to. The great author Anne Lamont said that the opposite of faith is not doubt, but certainty. Certainty completely loses its purpose. Faith includes recognizing disorder, emptiness, and discomfort, and allowing them to be there until the light reappears. Cynicism, pretending to be certain, makes it very easy to invent a rule in our mind. If I put God in this box, then he can't affect me. If I say, answer these prayers, but not the others, because I don't know if you will. It just makes it easier to swallow and digest all this matter of faith. Instead of being in disorder with God, instead of saying, God, I don't know why you didn't answer,
but I'll just bring you this disappointment and I'll allow you to show me that even when we go from one side to the other, your character remains constant. God answers. He answers Sarah. He says, is there something impossible for me? He says that's his character, that nothing is impossible, because that's what Sarah was challenging. She was challenging and saying, I'm a little convinced that you're not as good as everyone says you are. She had invented a rule of certainty in her brain that was guiding her and preventing her from believing completely. And the problem is that she didn't just stop in disbelief. The cynicism blooms, as I said, and grows. It affects more than our faith. Later, Sarah does really terrible things that I don't have time to get into, but she tries to keep her promise to herself and makes her maid go with her husband. She imposes it on her. Hace cosas terribles.
Y entonces me abandonaron. And here is our anecdote, right here throughout the whole Bible. Hebrews 12, 15, the next chapter says,
Make sure that no one ceases to reach the grace of God, that no bitter root sprouts and causes difficulties and corrupts many. 1 Corinthians 13, 7, Love forgives everything, believes everything, expects everything, and endures everything. Matthew 5, 8, Blessed are those of a pure heart, for they shall see God. Well, there is a beauty in believing God for who He says He is, and what He says He can do. There is a beauty in admiring the character of God, and recognizing that He who describes Himself from the Exodus, as a faithful God for a thousand generations, slow to wrath, and full of eternal love. That is who He is. He is the same God who describes Himself in the book of Matthew when He says, I am meek and humble, I am kind. I want even little children to come to Me. I am so kind. He is that God. He has that character. This raises the question, How the heck does a cynical, fearful, and deceitful woman end up in the hall of faith? How does that happen? It's simple. She allows herself to be remade. Before, just before God gave them the baby, there is a unique moment in the Bible that does not happen in many other places. This is a name change that takes place, and God changes the name of Abraham and Sarah. In Hebrew, Abraham's name was Abraham before God changed it. If you know Hebrew, good for you, I am proud of you. But for the rest of us,
He had to drop a little bit of an anecdote in the name so that we can remember the promise. He changed the name from Abraham to Abraham. Now, that Haga that He drops there is representative of the Hebrew word Hamon, which means many nations. And many nations matters because it is God renewing His promise, saying, I will bring many nations. You will be the father of many nations. And then He takes the name of Sarah and changes it to Sarai, and gives an H at the end to Sarah, which is another promise. Sarai means princess. And the variation of princess means that I will give you real nations that will come from you. But if we take that and put it in the translation to Spanish, I think God did something unique for us today. I am quite bold to believe it. Now, Abraham is written A-B-R-A-M. And then God drops an H-A in the middle. And then for Sarah it is written S-A-R-A-I. And then God adds an H. Do we see what God did? He literally says, right in the middle of His name. Look, He is about to redeem the laughter. In Hebrews 11, 11, it says, By faith to a Sarah who had already passed the age of having children, because she considered faithful to whom she had made the promise. What changed with Sarah? Nothing, except that she had this redeemed laughter that allowed her heart to be soft. And so she considered God as faithful.
She simply allowed herself to be redeemed in the person who could believe God, for whom He said He would be. So not only does God give them a baby named Isaac, which means laughter. Then He has the audacity to deposit laughter in their names. He goes a step further to redeem the laughter. In Genesis 21, 6, it says, Sarah said, God has made me laugh, and all who find out will laugh with me. And He added, Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would give birth to children? For I have given him a son in his old age. God, redeem this. I think of when I was in high school and I wrote things like, I believe in God. I believe there was a youthful innocence there. I remember Matthew 18, 3. I assure you that unless you change and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. An increase in faith requires faith in the character of God. I'm not saying to believe more in God. No, I'm not saying that. I say that like children, we must learn to trust Him again. You see, I don't give my son everything he wants. It's possible to see the whole picture, but behind the curtain, he looks at me and trusts me. Maybe God won't give us everything we want at the moment we want. Maybe we won't be able to see the whole picture, but his invitation for us today is to trust in the identity of his character,
that he is constant, faithful, and firm. And Sarah, she takes a step to believe this, one that makes her laugh, a laugh of cynicism, a laugh of, like, hey, look at this. You're not going to believe this. I'm 90 years old with a one-month-old baby. Look at what God did. That's what she's doing. She's laughing with joy and astonishment, and she's been transformed. I think God wants to transform something in us today. Not because he wants us to simply forget all the scars, all the disappointment, but because he wants us to bring it to him with honesty. He wants to walk with us and see us overcome the difficult moments, telling us, I'm here. I promise I won't let you go. I know you don't understand everything now. I know you don't understand why I didn't give you what you asked for. But if you trust in me, I will guide you to the end. That is his invitation. As I was praying and preparing to share this message, what led me to this perspective about Sarah, all this message was born from a specific moment. I had a moment with God. Well, it wasn't with God. I was cleaning the house and I was humming this song in my mind, like, he won't fail. It's a popular Christian song. I don't even know what it's called, but it's popular and catchy. I sang it in my mind. He won't fail. He won't fail. So I paused and said, wait a second. Wait a minute. I feel like you've failed me. I feel like many times you didn't fulfill. And I said, I'm not going to sing that song again until I can be really honest with God and really curious with God. Which, incidentally, is something that fascinates him. So I got very honest and very curious. And I said, God, how can I sing this song for real?
Lucas 6, 21.

It's time to make the difference! We have to make the difference! Let's go to Hebrew. Before we say goodbye, I want to encourage you to take the next step. Don't let this message stay alone in something you heard. Let God do something with you. Maybe that step is opening your Bible this week. Maybe it's taking a few minutes to speak with God in prayer. Maybe it's forgiving or asking for forgiveness, or simply saying yes to what God is putting in front of you today. If you feel the desire to grow more, to have a positive influence on others, or simply discover how God can use you, we want to invite you to ACTIVA. It's a four-session course, all virtual, designed to help you grow in your relationship with Jesus, get to know the heart of our church better, and develop the leadership that God is already forming in you. You don't have to look at yourself as a leader to participate. You don't have to be perfect. Let's look at all these stories that we are discussing during this series. If you have the desire to continue growing and serving others, ACTIVA is for you. We would love to, together with people like you, invite you to this space and collaborate and grow to see what God wants to do through you in your life. So you can write to us at hola.crossroads.net to share more information about our next session. It's a pleasure to have you here, and we look forward to hearing from you.
