Coming to Life: Philemon

The Book of Philemon, written by Paul during his imprisonment around 60 AD, is a brief yet impactful letter addressed to a man named Philemon, a Christian living in Colossae. Philemon was a friend of Paul who hosted a church in his home and owned a slave named Onesimus. Onesimus had run away to Rome after stealing from Philemon, where he encountered Paul, accepted Christ, and became a valuable helper to Paul.

In his letter, Paul appeals to Philemon to forgive and accept Onesimus not as a slave but as a brother in Christ. Rather than using his authority to command Philemon, Paul chooses to make a heartfelt request, emphasizing grace, forgiveness, and the transformative power of faith in Christ. The letter highlights Paul’s selflessness, as he even offers to repay any debt Onesimus owes.
