Paul wants the Thessalonians to not just preach the gospel, but to live out their conduct as Jesus would. And that spreads the real gospel so people of any culture can understand authenticity. Amen? So starting in verse nine, Paul says, remember, brothers, that he worked night and day. Paul was a tent maker with Priscilla and Aquila in Corinth, and he made money that way while also raising money for other churches. Paul didn't want the gospel to be preached as if he was gonna make money off of it. He wanted to know he cared about their salvation. Paul wanted them to understand God's word.

In Brooklyn, I have an older lady in my church who asked me if I preach from the Bible. I said, I think I should as a pastor. She said, some people talk about the Bible, but they don't actually teach God's word. So we study the word line by line and verse by verse to understand the context. Amen? Verse 10, Paul says, you are witnesses of how holy and righteous and blameless was his conduct before them. We all know what it's like to have people say something to us, to do something, to act like something, but they don't do it themselves. Paul wanted to avoid that by saying, I wanna be here free of charge that way you guys know I'm real. Today's sermon, the primary word, is the word walk. Please say walk. Caminar? Caminar. Caminar. Eso es. Caminar. I want to walk in a manner worthy of God. Amen.

Amen. In order to do that, I must submit to God's words. I must place myself under submission to him. The word submit in the scriptures is a military term to say, I trust whoever's over me in authority. It's a submission of your whole life. I don't do church. Christianity is my identity. It's not about a bunch of the four walls. It's about a relationship with Jesus. And the church is a relationship with each other. Paul wants the Thessalonians to walk in a way that reflects the glory of Jesus. It can't be just talk only. It must be action as well. The action lines up with the glory of Jesus. talking. In verse 11, he says, you know how like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk worthy of God who calls you into his own kingdom and glory. I long for a day when all of our cultures can come together and we celebrate Jesus in every language. Amen. And it's not about one kingdom or one culture. It's about his kingdom and all of us in him. Amen. Point number one, walk in a manner worthy of God. Where you work, where you go to school, you are a representation of Jesus and his church. It should be authentic. It should be real. When you walk with someone, you spend time with them. So when I take my kids out to go to a restaurant, in Brooklyn it's a bodega.

In the bodega, to get a sandwich, a bagel, when we walk with each other, we talk and converse and we build a conversation. When following Jesus, we must be in his word and building conversation with him in prayer. It should not be something we're doing only Sundays. We should do this daily, talking to God and learning his word and applying it in our lives. I used to go play basketball as a young man. I still do, but I'm getting older now. But when I go with people to reach out to them, I walk with them and talk with them. As a Christian, we're meant to do that in all facets of our life. Amen. Okay, verse 13, he says, we also thank God constantly that when you receive the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as what it really is, the word of God, which is that work in you believers. I'm going to share a story about high school. I shared this at Live Weekend so the youth can hear this twice. As a senior in high school, I had an art class and most of the students in the class were freshmen and sophomores. In the beginning of class, the teacher had us introduce ourselves, who we are and what do we do. I'm bold. So I said, my name is Zach. I play basketball on the varsity team and I love Jesus. The next person after me got up in front of the whole class, said, I'm Alex and I don't love Jesus. So I went to go sharpen a pencil. Alex came next to me and started barking at me. I said, do you need a cough drop? He did it again, and told me he was a satanist, and he was trying to put demons onto me. We then got assigned seating, and he was seated next to me. The other guy next to me got kicked out of another school because he was a drug dealer. It sounds like a bad joke, but at the table was the Christian, the satanist, and the drug dealer. Over the next two months, we started conversing about Jesus and the Bible. One particular day, our talks got really deep about the Gospel. I started going really hard at the Gospel for a while. I said, because I've explained the words of God, do you want to follow Jesus?

The drug dealer said, I believe every word you said, but if I follow Jesus, I have to quit dealing drugs. And he walked out. The satanist came to me, and he said, I believe every word you said, but if I have to follow Jesus, I can't do what I want. Therefore, I want to do what I want, and that's why I follow Satan. You see, the Gospel is about trusting Jesus. That He's better than anything Satan can offer, and than anything this world can offer. It's walking in a relationship with Him. It's going from Adam and Eve, no longer walking in the garden with God, to being a disciple and walking with Jesus. We are called to walk in a manner that points to Jesus. Because if we truly love Him, we'll walk with Him. Point number one, walk. Point number two, verse 14. For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God and Christ Jesus that are in Judea. Say, imitators. In the Greek, the original language of the New Testament, the word imitate comes from the Greek word mimic. It's where we get the word mime from. So, a mime mimics people's behavior without talking. Alright, do we have any parents in here? Si, verdad? When you have little kids, they mimic and imitate everything you do. They laugh like you, they make fun like you, and they even cry like us. My son, Jonathan, likes to act like Batman, like I do at home, so he does the same thing at school. But he mimics me because he walks with me the most. You imitate the people you're around the most. I know Español poquito because I'm around my wife. The more you spend time with someone, the more you act like them, the more you imitate them, the more you do the things that they do. As Christians, we're called to walk with God and imitate him. We were created in the image of God. An image reflects the glory of the one who was created in us.

If I have a statue of Lebron James, Messi, best soccer player in the world, he's my favorite soccer player in the world, the statue of Messi should look like Messi, not like Ronaldo. You guys see the statue of Ronaldo? If you look it up, the first one was so bad, it didn't look anything like him. And we all understand that. But if we're created in the image of God, we should look like Jesus and walk like him. We should be kind like him. We should reach the people like him, and we should love the neighbors like he did. We are called to be imitators of Jesus. We are called to be disciples of Jesus who make disciples of Jesus. I have a photo up here of three young men. This is Julian, Ako, and Seth. Julian is from up New York, but also Texas. This was seven years ago. We have discipled him. We just ordained him as a deacon, and he's getting married in August. His girlfriend came to Christ, and he's into art and basketball. Ako is Kenyan, speaks five different languages. This was seven years ago. He got married in our church. First wedding we did in our church, and then he got a job in Kansas. He moved to Kansas. He called me two weeks ago. In his church in Kansas, he is now being sent out as an international church planter. Yes, praise God. His goal, when we started the burrow, was to have him copy what we do, to imitate it, and take it to whoever needs it, wherever he goes. Seth is Puerto Rican. He was the first person in our church we baptized, and he named our church the Burrow Church. He said he wanted to reach his friends, so we should be a church for the Burrow of Brooklyn.

That's how the Burrow Church started its name. He was a teenager at the time. He went to college in the Bronx, New York, and started a Bible study in the Bronx. He took some of the stuff that we had studied, imitated it, and applied it there at Fordham. The Bible study grew to be bigger than our church. People were coming to know Jesus and being baptized. I did his wedding a year ago, or two years ago, to the second person we baptized. Her name was Zina, also Puerto Rican, can sing lights out. They moved to Japan because he graduated and is in the Marines. He sent me a video over Christmas of him baptizing his unit. Amen, yes. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. Amen. We, as Christians, are called to walk with God, imitate him, and teach others to do the same. We have a discipleship method in our church. If you could pull it up. It's a five-step method. Yeah, so, yep, that's it. Yeah, right there, that one, exactly. Move it up. They watch, you do. They help, you do. You help, they do. You watch, they do.

They do, someone else watches. All right, let's do some math. I hope I can do that. All right. If I witness to 2,000 people, and they come to know Jesus, and that happens once, every year, for 20 years, how many people is that? 40,000, yes, a lot. Okay. Okay. If I disciple two people in one year, and they disciple two other people, it becomes exponential. I just train them what I know. One or two people. It's two to the 20th power. How many people after 20 years would that be? How many people after 20 years, how many would that be? Calculator, calculator. Cell phones. You ready? Over one million. If we take what we learn from Jesus, and the church, and pour it into one or two people, it will have more lasting kingdom impact long-term

than being a gifted speaker or communicator. Amen? We are called to disciple people. We're called to teach them what we've learned. We're called to show them grace. Even if you're not the most gifted speaker, you can reach one or two people. Maybe it's a coworker. Maybe it's a neighbor. Maybe it's start by asking them to do a Bible study. Maybe it's asking to pray for them. Maybe it's starting a prayer group. My friend Eric, Dominican, he came during Live Weekend. He speaks fluent Spanish. He started a prayer call that meets on WhatsApp every morning. He started inviting his friends and his family. I could never communicate to them like he can because he understands their language and their culture better than I ever would. I want to help disciple him to reach more people than I can ever reach. This was Paul's goal with the Thessalonians.

He wanted them to imitate What they had learned from Jesus. And that's how all the churches in Acts started and grew. It wasn't about special lights or special conversation or talk. It was simply walking with Jesus and teaching people to copy that. Every Christian here, we are called to do that. And God can use you. The disciples were called common men, they were fishermen, they were people that I connect with. But they could connect with the people of today. We are called to be like that. Amen. Point number three. We want to walk with Jesus. We want to imitate Christ. Say walk. Caminar. Say imitate. And say salvation. We want to

see people come to know Jesus and be saved. Verse 14. He says, for you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets and drove us out and displeased God and opposed all mankind by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved. God wants us to not worry about to worry about if the world rejects us or not. We're called to love on them and share on the gospel and understand what they go through. Three years ago my family and I and my church went through big spiritual warfare. My other pastor almost died from COVID. My worship leader was lit on fire. My youth pastor

got his leg amputated because of diabetes. My children's minister was hospitalized with pneumonia. My daughter was diagnosed with autism. And my mentor through City to City New York, it's a church planting training network, we were talking and missed a Zoom call and two hours later he had a heart attack and died. I did not understand why God was allowing me to go through this. I was in deep pain. My family was in deep pain and my children were struggling. I went to God frustrated and not understanding. What I didn't realize is that when you suffer with people you understand more what they go through. in order to reach them for Christ. Yes. Amen. Amen. Amen. Jesus knows how we feel.

He suffered like us. He went to the cross. He experienced pain from family, from enemies, from rejection, and yet he died for our sins. We're called to walk with Jesus. We're called to imitate him. And we're called to suffer like him. Why? Because we want to see people get saved. We gotta understand that even when we're rejected, God will deal with that in the end times. In Revelation, for those in Christ, there's a wedding celebration. For those against Jesus, it's like a funeral. Jesus loves us, and he wants us to speak the truth. To our neighbors, and to the people around us. And he wants to use you. My challenge for you is to spend time with God daily, to get in discipleship with 121 Español, or with the discipleship groups here, and learn what it means to follow Jesus. Take what you've learned, and apply it in your heart, and give it to the people who know you, to your neighbors, to the people around you. Because you might be the closest thing to Jesus that they experience. Amen? Amen. Amen.

Challenge us, Lord, to reach our neighbors, to start a Bible study, or start a prayer group, and teach others to do the same. Help us to imitate you, Jesus, and to imitate your church. Amen. Amen. Amen. The bread was broken, and it represented his body being broken for us. This Passover meal was meant as a solemn gathering for families to experience together. The church is not a business, it's a family. And with family, we have to be authentic, we have to be real with each other, and we come together in Christ. When Jesus broke the bread, when we eat the bread, we're meant to do that in remembrance of him. He was teaching his disciples to imitate what he was doing. So this is why we do the Lord's Supper, to honor Jesus's flame. Then he would take the wine, And in Jewish culture, the wine represented different aspects of the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt into the Promised Land. So during that week, when they had the Passover meal, they would drink the cup four times, and on the third time, they would drink the cup, and together they would say, it is finished. And that would represent them being freed from slavery to follow God into the Promised Land. You remember what Jesus said on the cross. He said, it is finished, and it was to represent that he died for our sins, that we would be freed

from the slavery of sins, and we could walk with him like we were meant to in the garden. Yes, I wanna invite you, if you are not a Christian here, you do not have to feel like you have to take this, but we would love to invite you into a relationship with Jesus. When I get baptized, it's because I'm declaring my love for Jesus. When I engage in communion, I'm remembering the love of Jesus.
