A Heart That Honors God

We hope and pray for God to speak to you today as you seek to live your life all in for Jesus Christ. And now from First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tennessee, here's Pastor Jordan Easley. Well, man, I hope you have your Bible. I hope you have something to write on and write with. We're gonna spend the next few minutes unpacking God's Word, and I believe God's got a word for every single one of us here today. So God is good, right? And God is moving, and God is doing an incredible work. Hey, standing with me on stage today are two chairs. This isn't a normal thing, but today there's two chairs, and we have them labeled old and new. And really, you can call them all sorts of things. You can call this old life and new life. You can call this old nature and new nature. You can call it old kingdom and new kingdom. But for the sake of simplicity, we're gonna call these two chairs old and new. You know, every single person on Earth knows what it's like to sit in this chair, the old chair. This chair symbolizes our old self, our original self,

the life of a sinner. You know, the Bible says in Psalm 51.5, Indeed, I was guilty when I was born. I was sinful when my mother conceived me. So understand, when I say you know what it's like to sit in this old chair, that's not an insult. That's just a fact. Hey, we were all born into sin. If you agree with that, say amen. You know your kids were born into sin because you've been there the whole time, right? They've been sinning since the very beginning. And the Bible says that's true of every single one of us. We were all born into sin. We're born into an old nature and a worldly culture. And the truth is, some of you are still sitting in this chair today. And I just want you to hear this as we get kicked off today. As long as you remain in this seat, as long as you remain in this chair, your actions and desires are going to be shaped and determined by society's expectations. Hey, you know it, in this chair, we strive for personal success, don't we? In this chair, we strive for wealth and comfort and status. In this chair, we're driven by self-interest and the desire for recognition. In this chair, we dive into opportunities and we engage in activities that prioritize personal gain. And sometimes we were pursuing the applause of people.

And we do so where sometimes that's even at the expense of people. In this chair, we are the king of the universe. In this chair, we live to build ourselves up. We live to prop our name up. That's the old chair. And every single one of us knows what it's like to sit there. But then there's another chair and this is the new chair. And let me just say before we even talk about it, this new chair is quite the opposite of the old chair. You see where the old chair represents following the world's way, the new chair represents following Jesus. See over there in the old chair, a person is focused on all the wrong things, why? Because their heart is still being defined by their sin. Over here in the new chair, everything is different. Everything has changed. Our focus is different. Our hearts are different. You see our hearts in this chair are no longer defined by our sin. In this chair, our hearts are being defined by our savior. And he changes the ballgame. See when Jesus truly saves a person, he not only changes their eternal destination, he also transforms their life. You say, Jordan, what does that mean? It means when I said yes to Jesus,

he not only changed my chair, he changed my mind. He changed my heart. He changed my language. He changed my desires. He changed my actions. He changed my relationships. He changed everything. Get this, when Jesus saves us, he transforms us. If you agree with that, say amen. Hey, his salvation is what changes us. His spirit is what guides us. His word is what teaches us and shows us what this new life is supposed to look like. You see in this chair, we're called to seek God's righteousness. In this chair, we're called to build God's kingdom. We're called to serve others selflessly. We're called to share Christ faithfully. In this chair, we're driven by love and humility and a desire to honor God above everything, giving him everything that we have and everything that we do. In this chair, we engage in practices like prayer and acts of kindness and acts of service with a desire to be salt and light to the world around us. In this chair, it's different because Jesus is the king of kings in this chair Jesus is the king of the universe in this chair and in this chair We live our lives for our not for our glory, but for his glory in this chair We live for his kingdom to prop up his name not our name. You see the difference between the two chairs today See, that's what Jesus has been showing us over the past few weeks

He's been saying the only way you could truly follow me is if you get out of that chair and you get in this one You got to move chairs And he's saying if you sit in this new seat your life is going to be different because here your purpose is different Here your life has changed and you no longer live for the world You're no longer living according to the culture of this world. And that's the message Jesus had for the believers so many years ago But you know what that message reigns true for us today and he's showing us Following Christ will naturally change your life if you follow Jesus You cannot and will not be the same person that you used to be when you were sitting in that chair Listen if you're following him You can tell you can tell because the seat you're sitting in looks completely different Listen, that's the message Jesus had for them. That's the message Jesus has for us Listen if we know Jesus and have been saved by him Then we're sitting in a new chair and Christ has called us out of our old life in That culture and he's given us a new life in this culture and today from Matthew chapter 6 Jesus is going to continue showing us what this new life ought to look like What is this new life? Supposed to look like Matthew chapter 6 if you've been with us for a while now You know that as we've walked through chapter 5 Jesus was focusing on our internal transformation our internal transformation We've heard Jesus talked about being salt and light He talked about anger and lust and loving our enemies instead of hating our enemies When Jesus changes our heart he changes our how and that's what we've seen over the past couple of weeks He changes how we see people. He's changed how we love people You have to ask how do we become the person that God's created us to be when Jesus changes our heart? He changes our how that was chapter 5 But today in chapter 6, we'll see Jesus shift from internal transformation To now he's going to talk about external practices He's going to talk about the things that we do and the main question I believe Jesus is wanting us to consider today. Is this question? Are you ready? Why do we do the things we do

In fact, I want you to personalize this today if you're a note-taker write that at the top of your page Why do I do the things I do? You see when Jesus changes our heart. Not only does he change our how but he also changes our why Why do we do the things that we do think about that? Why do we go to church? Why do we pray? Why do we serve other people? Why do we raise our hands in worship? Why do we participate in community groups and go to classes and study the Bible? Why do we care for widows and orphans? Why do we invest in the next generation? Why do we give at all? See most of us are probably thinking pastor I do those things because I love the Lord because I want to grow in my walk with Christ I want to know more about him. I want to become more like him for many of us here today I'm sure our why and the things we do are pure and good and right But for others here today if we're being perfectly honest before the Lord Our reasons may look a little bit different than everybody else The truth is some people came to church today not because it's good for their soul They came to church today because it's good for their business right There's certain people here that they came not pursuing a relationship with Jesus They came because they're pursuing a relationship with somebody else I'm not saying I'm not gonna call any names, but I mean there may be people that didn't come here looking for God They're looking for a girl. Can I get an amen for no don't amen that all right? But some of y'all found a girl in church and you can't be mad about it. All right But uh, the motivation is what we're talking about. Why do we do? the things that we do Today we're gonna hear Jesus say my primary focus is not on your doing My primary focus is on your being It's not necessarily about what you do It's all about why you do it You see the difference?

Hey, the world measures your actions the Lord measures your motives He measures your motives and that's what Jesus is going to tell us today Jesus is evaluating the motivation behind every single one of our actions What does it say in Proverbs 16 to? All a person's ways seem right to him, but the Lord weighs Motives do you get this today? Hey the Lord measures why we do it When the world measures what we do do you get the difference? The world measures what we do the Lord measures why we do it and today from Matthew chapter 6 Jesus is going to tell us that is true when it comes to how you pray It's gonna it's true when it's related to your fasting or your or your living it all also Applies to your giving and for whatever reason that's how Jesus begins this message He's gonna say this is true in all aspects of living, but it's also specifically true related to your giving So if you're taking notes, we're gonna begin by hearing Jesus talk about the caution He's gonna caution believers and here's the caution. He says don't give to be seen Verse 1 says be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them Otherwise you have no reward with your father in heaven in Scripture Jesus repeatedly calls out the Pharisees and he calls them out because they were Religiously active but their motives were corrupt In Matthew 23 5 he said they do everything to be seen by others So these people prayed elaborate prayers in public why well because they wanted people to hear their prayers and to see them It says they fasted and they told everybody. Hey, by the way, I'm fasting right now And why did they do that? Well because they wanted other people to look at them be like, ah, that guy's super religious He's better than me, right? It was a status thing They also said hey, don't give big gifts or loud gifts, but they were doing that They were giving big gifts and loud gifts and very public ways. Why well, it wasn't to please God It was to receive the applause and the recognition from all the people in the courtyard You know right now The internet is flooded with people doing good things for other people And I don't know if you've ever gone through that little that little rabbit trail

I don't know if you've ever chased that and started watching YouTube videos. I'm guilty of this I did this this week for about 30 minutes I watched this one guy who does these videos on the internet and what he does He goes to grocery stores and he buys groceries for people waiting in line. You ever seen these videos by the way Okay, I'm not recommending them. I'm just curious. All right, but but he's he's buying groceries for people and at first I saw these videos I was like man, that's pretty cool. I mean, what a what a generous guy. I mean, he's blessing people. He's surprising people He just waits in line. He's like, hey, let me buy your groceries Then he does this videos the whole thing and it's just gone viral and so I'm watching these videos and at the same time I'm preparing for this message And at one point I go back to the text and I read this verse again And it kind of hit me a different way and I asked myself this question. What is the why behind the videos? What is the why behind this guy's generosity? I mean you've got this guy He's paying like a hundred bucks for somebody's groceries It's costing him something But then I started doing the math and I started thinking, you know, he's got he's generated millions of subscribers There are millions of views on every single video Which in turn means that he's making tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars by putting these videos out so you have to ask the question like What do you believe is the why behind his generosity? Is he blessing others out of a spirit of giving? Is he blessing others in order to honor the Lord or is he giving because the cameras are rolling? And because people are watching you say Jordan, why did you wake up in such a bad mood today? Why are you picking on a youtuber at church? And I promise you that's not my intention But I hope I hope you understand that youtuber is no different than many of us here today You know, we say things like oh, yeah I'll give big gifts or generous gifts as long as you put my name in lights Or I'll serve in that capacity in the church as long as it's a Service area where it's very public and everyone will know that I'm serving right? Or yeah, Jordan I'll pay for The person's meal on the other side of the restaurant as long as you tell the waiter that I'm the one who picked up the tab

Right, but remember what Jesus said in this verse He said be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them Otherwise you have no reward With your father in heaven He said man that that idea that that motive forgiving that's old chair stuff And yet Jesus reminds us here if we seek human approval if we seek human come on If your actions appear to be holy, but your heart is far from God You will forego the rewards that God intends for you Do you see this today? He's saying, hey, if your heart is wrong, if you seek human applause instead of divine approval, the recognition we receive will be our final reward and we will completely miss out on God's very best. Hey, use your imagination with me today. I want you to think about this. I want you to imagine this room filled with blessings from God, filled with gifts from God. And every single one of those gifts and blessings are earmarked with your name on them. Every single one of these blessings are designated for you, they're designed for you. God intends to give them to you. Can you imagine that with me today? Here's what the Bible says. The Bible says, if your heart isn't right and you practice your righteousness and your motivations aren't right when you do good things for others, the Bible says you will miss out

on every single one of those blessings in your life. Man, is that not a scary thought? Here's the message I believe that Jesus has for us today. He's saying, if your actions appear to be holy, but your heart is wrong, then you're gonna miss out on everything that God intends for you. It's not about what you do, it's about why you do it. So your actions and your heart, two different things. And yet God says they have to be in the right order. Jesus starts out with the caution. He says, don't give to be seen. But now you see the corruption. And Jesus goes on to say, make it private and not a performance. Make it private and not a performance. Verse two, so whenever you give to the poor, don't sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues on the streets to be applauded by people. Truly, I tell you, they have their reward. In the time of Jesus, the temple in Jerusalem featured a designated area known as the Court of Women. And the Court of Women is a place where worshipers would gather and people would come and they would give their financial offerings to the Lord. History tells us within the courtyard, there were 13 metal collection boxes that were also referred to as trumpets. And the reason they were called that

is because they had a similar shape to a trumpet. They had this wide opening at the top and they narrowed down to the other end, creating a funnel where coins would fall. They would fall all the way through this box, through a tube, down to a lower level and the dollars or the coins would be collected underneath the surface of the floor. When history tells us that these coins were deposited, they were deposited into one of these 13 metal containers. And history lets us know that once the coins were put in these containers, they would make an audible sound in the courtyard. So naturally, the more coins you deposited and the larger the gift was, the louder the sound would be. And the louder the sound was in the courtyard, the more attention people received when they gave their big offering. So you can imagine, this place is packed with people and someone deposits a lot of coins. Everyone would just stop and be like, who is it that's giving these large gifts? Well, that's what Jesus warns his followers with in this text. He says, I'm warning you when it comes to giving, don't give in a way that creates the sound of a trumpet. And when he says that, he's not talking about blowing a horn in church when the offering plate goes by. It's not like he's saying, hey, Baptist,

don't be like, do, do, do, do. Check it out, everybody. Watch this. He's not saying don't be that guy. What he's saying is, don't give in such a way, don't give a loud gift that showcases your so-called generosity. It's not about you, it's about him. And he tells us that kind of giving, it doesn't honor the Lord. In fact, Jesus says, if that's how you give and that defines why you give, you're just like the hypocrites in the synagogue who dump all of their coins in one of those trumpets. They gave for the applause of people and the attention of men. And once again, Jesus says, that applause will be their only reward and they will forego all of God's blessings that he intends for them to have. So I guess the question is, how should we give? I mean, when God is looking at our hearts and our motivations, how should we give? And the way I see it is, every single one of us are gonna give in one of two ways. We're gonna give for glory or we're gonna give for gloating. We're gonna give for glory or we're gonna give for gloating. And you know what's interesting about this?

When we give for gloating, we're still giving for glory. It's just glory that's been misplaced. Get this, when we give in the right way, it'll honor God, it will glorify God. But when we give in the wrong way, it will glorify us. What a great barometer that helps us determine if our giving is being given in such a way that glorifies him or glorifies us. Jesus gives us the caution. He says, don't give to be seen. He gives us the corruption. He said, make it private and not a performance. But then he gives us a command. And Jesus' command to us is give in secret. Give in secret. Read that in verse three. He says, but when you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your giving may be in secret. Hey, when you consider giving to the Lord, or you consider giving to help someone that's in great need, ask this question, would I still give this gift if no one ever knew that I gave it? Ask that. It's just a great way to kind of judge your own heart. If I was going to give this sacrificial gift, would I still give it if no one ever knew that I gave it? If the answer is yes, I believe you're on the right track.

You know what I've learned about money? It's a whole lot easier to spend someone else's money than it is to spend my own money. Can I get an amen from somebody? You tracking with me? Some of you know what I'm talking about. Some of you travel for business. You have an expense account. You have a company credit card. And you know firsthand it's a whole lot easier to order that big filet when they're buying, amen? It's a lot easier to upgrade your seat on the airplane. It's a lot easier to stay in the nice hotel when it's coming out of somebody else's pocket. If it's in your pocket, and I know some of you cheap folks in this room, I know you're gonna order off the kid's meal. You're gonna sit in the middle seat in economy and you're gonna stay in the Motel 6, amen? Come on, somebody, admit it. But that's true, right? It's so much easier to spend money when it's somebody else's money and it's not your money. But you know what I've noticed? That's not only true related to our spending. It's also true related to our giving. I remember when Audra and I were first married, we were broke. Anybody broke when you were first married? How about this?

Any of y'all broke broke when you were first married? Like there's a second broke because you were so broke? That was us, right? Paycheck to paycheck. Nothing in savings. Credit card through the roof. I'm talking about the works. Broke broke newlyweds. And in those early days, I'll tell you that we had very little, but our greatest problem wasn't that we had very little. Our greatest problem is what we did have, what we did earn, we looked at that money as our money. That was our greatest problem. My money was my money. I worked hard for this money. And because I saw it as my money that I worked hard for, there was a season in our marriage where I was unwilling to give to God what God told me to give. There was a season where I was unwilling to let go of some things that God expected me as a follower of Jesus to let go of. And for that reason, I had a perception problem. I viewed it incorrectly. But my perception problem in that season turned into a disobedience problem in the area of giving. And what I've learned and what I've been preaching over the last 25 years

is that God doesn't bless disobedience, amen? He doesn't bless disobedience, He blesses obedience. Therefore, if you rob God, you rob yourself. And that was a lesson I had to learn a long time ago. But here's what I've learned over the years. I've learned that how we view what we have is very important. And it's a whole lot easier to give someone else's money than it is to give our money. That's a true principle. And for that reason, I have to constantly remind myself that everything that I have, everything in my hands, it doesn't belong to me. Everything I have belongs to Him. My money doesn't belong to me, it belongs to Him. My savings doesn't belong to me. My possessions aren't my possessions. My investments aren't my investments. My nest egg isn't my nest egg. My retirement isn't my retirement. Everything I have belongs to the Lord. And you know what? He tells us how we should spend those resources. He tells us how we should steward the things He puts in our hands, all of which belong to Him, by the way. Imagine I called one of you on stage right now. And I might do it just for fun, actually. But imagine I called one of you on stage right now and you stood right here.

And I took out my wallet and I took out a $100 bill and I put that $100 bill in your hand and said, this is your $100 bill. Now, I'm not gonna do that because I don't have a $100 bill, amen? But if I did, I'd give it to you, all right? If I had it, but I don't. But imagine, use your imagination. I hand you $100 bills and this is what I say. This $100 bill is now yours. I'm blessing you with this $100 bill. But I have a couple. of things I would like for you to do with the money if that's okay. And imagine in that setting, I say, with the first $10, I would like for you to give that $10 to our church. I'd like to give it to the ministries of this church, this church that's making an impact for the kingdom, a church that's preaching the gospel, investing in all generations. I believe the first $10 of this, $100, ought to go straight to the church. But then I say, and then I want you to take the next $10, and with that, I would like for you to give it to our Generations Fund, the fund that's building for the future and making room for more people from all generations to hear about Jesus right here at First Baptist Cleveland. I want you to invest the next $10 in the Generations Fund. And then I would say, but that's not the last request. I would also like for you to go above and beyond, and I know the Bible doesn't command you to do this, and I know that this is giving more than Jesus requires you to give, but I'd like for you to take the next $10, and I would like for you to invest that into our mission partnerships around the world. We've got an incredible missions ministry that supports literally thousands of missionaries around the world, and with that $10, I would like for you to give that to support missions

and missionaries around the world. I'm asking you to give $30, and then I would like for you to take the remaining $70 and spend it, and give it, and do whatever you want with it, as long as it honors the Lord. You take $70, and it's yours, but manage it and steward it well. Now imagine that setting, imagine you're on the stage right now. The reality is you could take that $100, you could go home completely ignoring everything I just said, and you would lose no sleep over that. I get that. But the truth is, I just believe that most people in this room, if that were you, you would be more than willing to do what I was asking you to do. You would be more than willing to give to the church and to support the ministries happening right here. You'd be more than willing to support the Generations Fund that's building for the future. You'd be more than willing to support missions and missionaries around the world. You wouldn't even hesitate to do those things. Let me ask you something, why? Why wouldn't you hesitate? You know why? Because it ain't your money. And that's exactly what you would be thinking, you're like, this isn't mine anyways. Listen, I'm coming out of this thing doing great things, honoring the Lord, investing in these things, and I'm coming out of here with $70 that doesn't even belong to me. I've just been blessed with $70. Do you understand what I'm saying here today? Hey, everything you have belongs to God. Everything that you've ever received, you have received from the mighty, generous hand of Almighty God. And so when you're talking about God's standard for giving, listen, that standard will never be reached until we see what we have as belonging to Him. Because only then will we do what He tells us to do.

And only then will we give how He tells us to give. I'm not talking about old chair stuff, I'm talking about new chair giving. I'm talking about kingdom giving. And the Bible shows us kingdom giving is different. It's just different. You say, what is kingdom giving? Here's what the Bible tells us about kingdom giving. Number one, kingdom giving is giving secretly, not for show. We just read that verse. But when you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing so that your giving may be in secret. Hey, don't put on a show. Let God see your heart and give in a way that you know is going to make a difference. But ultimately, you know you're giving in secret in a way that puts a smile on the face of God. Kingdom giving is also giving sacrificially, not comfortably. Mark 12, 41 says, sitting across from the temple's treasury, he watched how the crowd dropped money into the treasury. Many rich people were putting in large sums. But then a poor widow came and dropped in two tiny coins worth very little. Summoning his disciples, he said to them, truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. For they all gave out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, has put in everything she had, all she had to live on. Jesus said, hey, I know all these rich people are basically tipping God and they're taking the foam off the top and they're putting it in the treasury. But this lady, I see her heart, and her heart is one that is willing to give sacrificially. It's a faith journey. She's giving in a way that's not comfortable, it's sacrificial, and that puts a smile on the face of God.

The next one is this, kingdom giving is giving cheerfully, not reluctantly. Second Corinthians 9, 7 says, each person should do as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or out of compulsion, since God loves the cheerful. You know what that tells me? It tells me that if you're giving in a way where you're like, if you're giving in a way where you're trying to make change in the offering plate, if you're giving in a way where you're so upset that you have to do this, man, keep your money because it's making absolutely no difference. God would rather you keep your money if you're going to give without being cheerful. Hey, give your money. Listen, God doesn't need your money. God doesn't give us the opportunity to give because he really, really needs what you're putting in the plate. God gives you the opportunity to give so that you can show yourself what God sees already. God sees your heart, but this is a way to express what's in our heart, express the generosity of God because God's changed us from the inside out. Giving is a way to bless him and to bless his church, but his church doesn't need any of us. So he says, give in a way that's cheerful, not reluctant. Last but not least, kingdom giving is giving to build God's kingdom and not your reputation. We read those verses a second ago. He's just talking about once again, what are you doing with what I put in your hands? What are you doing with the days that I've given you, the talents I've entrusted you with? This isn't just related to giving. This is related to all aspects of living. And Jesus says, I've given you this. What are you going to do with it? Here's the caution. Don't give to be seen.

This isn't about you. The corruption says, make it private, not a performance. If we're going to bring attention, let's bring attention to Jesus. And then you have the command. The command is given secret. This is between you and the Lord. And ultimately, it's not a matter of what you put in his hands, it's why you put it in his hands. Last but not least, I want to show you the compensation. And here's what Jesus is going to show us, that God sees, yes, but God also rewards. God sees and God rewards. Verse three, but when you give to the poor, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your father, who sees in secret, will reward you. So once again, Jesus reinforces the kingdom standard for giving and for living. And he says, it's not what you give that matters most to God. It's the why behind your giving. Listen, you shouldn't give or live for the applause of people. You should give and you should live for the approval of God. Jesus says, your motivation, not your action, your motivation will determine your rewards. And what does his word say? What's given in humility will be honored in eternity. What's given in humility will be honored in eternity. Hey, as we close today, I want to take you all the way back to our original question. And I want you to consider the true answer to what we're asking. Why do I do the things that I do? Why do we do the things that we do? What is the motivation of your heart look like today? Hey, if you're sitting in this old chair, I know a lot of these things are hard to hear. Because if you're sitting here, you are living your life right now for the approval of all

these people. If you're sitting in this chair, you are living for an audience of many. And the Bible tells you, not only are you serving the many and living for the many, but you will receive temporary rewards from many. You will receive the applause of people throughout your life. You will, you'll receive the approval and affirmation from the people that you do life with. But if you're sitting in this chair, you're going to miss God's very best. He says, none of you are supposed to stay in this chair, but all of you are supposed to move to this chair. And then this new chair is completely different because over here, you're living for the approval of many and you are living your life for an audience of many. But over here, you're living your life for an audience of one. And the Bible says, when you live your life for an audience of one, you will receive an abundance of eternal rewards from the one. The one King of Kings, the one Lord of Lords, the only one that can bless you supernaturally. And so the question is, what chair are you sitting in? And if you're sitting here, let me ask you this, when God looks at your heart today, what does He see? I'm not asking what you do, I'm saying why do you do it? What is the motivation? What is the motivation of your heart today? And let me ask you, does the motivation of your heart put a smile on the face of God? Lord, today, I thank you for your word and I thank you for preaching straight at us about something that all of us need to hear. Lord, it's the motivation of our heart, the truth that you see. Lord, there's many people that know what it's like to live this life, fooling the people around us. But Lord, we know that we can't fool you, that you see right through our actions, you see right through our persona, and you see the person within who we are.

Lord, I pray that you understand why we do the things we do, and Lord, I pray that as we do business with you and as you move us and move our hearts, Lord, you would move us in such a way that we would become more like you, that our lives would be pleasing to you from the inside out. Lord, right now, I just pray for the person who doesn't know you, the person who's still sitting in that old chair, and Lord, I know that your desire is for life change.
