7.º mandamiento: No cometerás adulterio
Dios le dice a Israel que no cometa adulterio, lo cual implica tener relaciones sexuales con alguien que está en un pacto matrimonial. ¿Por qué es tan importante para Dios proteger el matrimonio y hacia qué apunta el matrimonio en última instancia?
We are in the seventh word of the Ten Commandments. Yes, which is, You shall not commit adultery. In Hebrew, there are two words, lo-tim-av, derived from the Hebrew root na-av, which means to have sexual relations with someone who has made a marital pact with another person, which leads us to wonder, why is that important? Of course. In Genesis 1, verse 27, it says, God created Adam, the human being, in His image. In the image of God He created him. He, that is, God, created him. That is, humanity. Man and woman He created them. The phrase, image of God, is replaced by man and woman. So, one of the ways that we human beings reflect the image of God is by being different, and at the same time, also one. The second story that really focuses on this is the story of Eden, where we see a single human being, an Adam. And then, when God puts the human being in the garden to work on him and take care of him, He says, It is not good that Adam is alone. And then He adds, I will make him an Eser Kenekdo. The word, Eser,
means the one who frees from a bad situation, that is, a rescuer. And the phrase, Kenekdo, means that it corresponds to him. Okay. That is, an ally who rescues and corresponds to Adam. But it does not correspond to him for being identical to him, but precisely for being different. So, God becomes an anesthetist. He makes Adam fall. He makes Adam fall asleep. In a deep sleep, and takes one of his sides. One becomes two. And when the human being wakes up and sees her, he says, How incredible! This is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She will be called Isha, a woman, that is, a woman, because she was taken from Ish, a man. And then the narrator intervenes in Genesis 2.24 and says, Well, dear reader, for this reason the man will leave his father and mother and will join, literally, he will hold on to his wife and they will be one flesh. The two will become one flesh. That's right. One flesh. It is a way of describing a family bond.
There is something very special, important in this, that God supports. It is also interesting that marriage is one of the main metaphors to refer to God's covenant with Israel. Of course. This must be the reason why the apostle Paul considers that sex and marriage have cosmic implications. We see this in his famous letter to the Ephesians, where he says, Husbands must love their wives, because when they love their wives, they love their own bodies. Without a doubt, he is meditating on One flesh. In the story of Eden, where the two are one, and then he begins to talk about the Messiah and the church. The Messiah loves the church. Yes. And one is like, What? And he says, This is a great mystery. To clarify, the mystery I'm talking about... Yes, explain that mystery to me. Well, Paul says that when in Genesis
he reads about the two, the man and the woman, becoming one, in the end, that is an image of Jesus and his people. That is, God and humanity becoming one. Well, then that is what is supposed to symbolize human marriage. Apparently, yes. Marriage symbolizes endless love and the loyal interest of God to become one with his human creatures, his collaborators. It's amazing. Yes. Well, let's turn it around. You will not commit adultery. If you see a marriage in your community, your relationship is the most important context in which both are learning to love each other fully as human beings. One with the other. Protect that. Help them. Honor that relationship. Of course. That's where they're putting it into practice.
Of course, we're not saying that in other relationships love doesn't matter. Exactly, yes. But here, there is a particular approach. There is an approach in marriage that is unique, meaningful, difficult. Don't destroy the marriage of another couple because of your sexual desires. Don't commit adultery. 🎵
