Wisdom Literature Overview

Having completed the book of Esther, we are transitioning to a new section of the Old Testament, known as the Wisdom Literature, which includes Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon. This section, often referred to as the Poetical books, emphasizes the pursuit of wisdom, the importance of a relationship with God, and the practical application of that wisdom in everyday life. These writings, primarily composed by sages rather than prophets or priests, explore human struggles and experiences while highlighting how to please God in various situations.

The timeline for these books varies, with some like Job’s authorship being debated and potentially ranging from 2100 B.C. to 600 B.C. Psalms includes contributions from multiple authors, with David’s portions written between 1100 B.C. and 960 B.C. Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are largely attributed to Solomon, though some writings may have been added later. Despite the complexities surrounding their authorship and dating, the core messages remain straightforward: seek wisdom and embrace God’s love.
