My wife Tiffany Cooper and I we started People's Church 24 years ago on Mother's Day and it's our honor and our privilege and the joy of our life to be the senior pastors of People's Church and we're so glad to Have you here and we're a next step church Our word for the year at People's Church is the word grow It's a passion of ours to help people take next next steps spiritually and that's why the Bulletin was on your seat the little brochure there for you to take with you so that you can process Next steps for you to take and let me ask this of you. Survey means so much to me to help us serve you better as a next step church Well, how many of you today are ready for the resurrection message today? You're ready for the sermon today. You're ready for the preaching of God's Word today. I'm excited to preach How many of you are like me and you've lost your phone or your keys in your own house And you need to leave like right now, but you can't find them I've done this more than once I've lost my keys and I could not find my keys and I'm looking in the couch Cushions trying to find them. I'm looking underneath the couch cannot find them anywhere I'm retracing my steps trying to find my keys can't find them anywhere So what I start doing is I accuse my wife and kids Tiffany Tiffany, baby, would you put my keys? I always put them on the counter Herbert. I haven't touched your keys, baby I know you touch my keys back my keys always on the guy I have not touched your keys and I'm in a panic mode trying to find my keys And so I start praying Lord is your boy Lord help me find my keys. I need to go right now, and I'm looking I cannot find them They're in my pocket I've had this happen before they were in my pocket. I was too embarrassed to tell my family So I just left the house, you know, you know as I got about let y'all know how I found the keys Don't you hate when this happens? You're searching everywhere Except the right place and this describes the scene of the very first Easter in Luke chapter 24 Jesus had already been crucified. He's died

He's been buried for three days and then we read if you have a Bible turn it to Luke chapter Number 24, we're going to be in Luke 24 for the duration of our time, so just keep your Bibles open there. Picking up in verse number one, it says, on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright, the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, why do you look for the living among the dead? The women went to the tomb and noticed the stone to Jesus' tomb was rolled away, so they began to look for Jesus in the tomb. They could not find Jesus, and then they hear the voice that says, why are you looking for the living among the dead? This question still echoes 2,000 years later. I want to ask that same question to us today. Why are you looking for the living among the dead? In other words, why are you searching for life in dead places? Why are you searching for life in places that cannot give it? Many people have not outright rejected Jesus. They're just looking for life in dead places. Just like the women did not find a life by going back to the tomb, you will not find life if you keep going back to old habits, old relationships, old patterns, old coping mechanisms. You won't ever find life in dead places. Today, what I want to do is give you three ways to find life, find real life this Easter. And the first is find life in the resurrection, not your routine. In Luke chapter 24 and verse number one, it says, the women took spices to the tomb. It was a Jewish tradition to anoint a dead body before burial. The women did not complete this tradition before Jesus' death, so they went to the tomb to finish their Jewish ritual. They took their burial spices and went back to the tomb. Sometimes we go back to dead places simply because they're familiar to us. We do it out of routine. We do it out of habit. We return to dead places over and over again, trying to find life because it's what we're used to. Well, I always go out with those friends. I always participate just a little bit. I always stay super busy so

I don't have time for God. I always date the same type of person. I always sleep around with my boyfriend or girlfriend. I always look at pornography when I feel lonely. I always get drunk or high when I feel overwhelmed. I always go shopping online and eat butter pecan ice cream when I feel insecure. It's familiar. It's my routine, but it's a dead place. And the interesting thing about dead places is they don't always feel like dead places. They can feel exciting. Dead places can help you not to feel lonely. They can make you feel wanted. They can be comfortable, predictable, and familiar. So people return to dead places out of routine, out of habit. But I love what the angel tells these ladies. In Luke chapter 24, that next verse, verse number six, he says, he is risen. He's not here. He is risen. Life is not in this dead tomb. Life isn't there. Like the angel told those women 2,000 years ago, I want to tell you the same thing today. Life isn't there. You're looking for peace in the bank account. It's not there. You're looking for intimacy and lust and sex. It's not there. You're looking for relief in the substance. It's not there. You're looking for worth in the relationship. It's not there. You're looking for identity in the world. It's not there. You're looking for self-esteem from social media, likes, clicks, and shares. It's not there. You're looking for happiness in the career, in the house, in the car. It's not there. You cannot find life in dead places. So you have to stop going back to what's familiar. You have to stop chasing old memories and habits. You have to stop revisiting old tombs. You will only find real life by believing in the resurrection of Jesus and surrendering your life to him. Number two is this, find life in God's love, not your labor. They went back to the tomb, those ladies, on Easter Sunday with spices to labor for Jesus.

They went to the tomb thinking they were going to work for a dead Jesus instead of receiving love from a risen Jesus. Even today, a lot of people try to earn a right relationship with God by their labor for God instead of receiving the love of God. Some of you today, if you were honest, you think you can earn God's love. You think the more you do right, the more God will love you and accept you. But that's just not what the Bible teaches. Most everybody listening to me right now knows this verse, John 3, 16. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. It does not say God so loved the world after a goddess act together. It does not say God so loved the world once it performed well. No, God just loves people. He just loves you. Easter is not about what you do. It's about what Jesus has done. It's not about how much you love God. It's about how much God loves you. First John chapter four and verse 19. We love because he first loved us. Your spices, your work, your deeds, your labor, your effort doesn't make God love you more.

God wants you to stop trying to find life and love in your labor and to start finding real life by receiving God's love. God loves you so, so much and there's nothing you can do about it. He loves you. Number three is this, find life in belief, not doubt. The women left the tomb and they immediately went and told the disciples that Jesus, he's alive and I want you to notice the disciples' response right there in Luke chapter 24 in verse number 11. It says, but they did not believe the women because their words seemed to them like nonsense. The disciples did not believe Jesus had resurrected and this is a very important detail in your Bible because if they were inventing a legend, they would have made the disciples heroic. They would have made them instantly faithful. They would have removed all doubt but the gospel writers included their confusion and unbelief, why? Because they were recording what actually happened. Maybe today you're like those disciples. You're doubting the resurrection of Jesus. You can't seem to find faith to believe that there's a God. It doesn't make sense to you and can I tell you today, it doesn't just take faith to believe in God. It takes a whole lot of faith not to believe in God. To believe there's no God requires believing

the universe designed itself. Order came from chaos. Intelligence came from non-intelligence. Design appeared without a designer. Purpose came from atoms with no purpose. Consciousness came from unconscious matter. Meaning came from molecules. Life appeared from lifeless chemicals. DNA wrote itself. Information appeared without a source. Humanity has no purpose and eternity has no hope. Faith in God explains all of creation. Denying God requires creation to explain itself. The resurrection of Jesus is extraordinary. It can be hard to believe but believing an empty universe produced everything is even more extraordinary. But here's what's so powerful about the first disciples of Jesus. The very ones who. First called the resurrection nonsense, became the ones who died a horrific death for their faith in Jesus. Something happened that moved them from doubt to declaration and that something was not an idea. It was a risen Christ. They saw Jesus alive and well for themselves and they believed. Let me share some interesting facts about the resurrection of Jesus.

Interesting fact, interesting fact number one, the eyewitness testimony. In 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verses three through eight, Paul lets us know the resurrection is true because of the eyewitness testimony. Jesus appeared to more than 500 people at one time. He also appeared to James, all the apostles, and finally to the apostle Paul himself. Paul says in verse number six in 1 Corinthians 15, most of them are still living. In other words, go ask them about the resurrection of Jesus because they're still alive. This is not legendary development over centuries. This is early public verifiable testimony that Jesus is alive. And then the women as primary witnesses. In all four gospels, women are the first witnesses. In first century Jewish culture, a woman's testimony was not highly valued. If they were inventing a story to convince skeptics, they would have never chosen women as the first witnesses. This detail strongly suggests authenticity, not fabrication. Jesus is alive. And then there's the empty tomb. All four gospels record the empty tomb. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, even many skeptical scholars agree the tomb was empty. The resurrection was preached in Jerusalem, the same city where Jesus was buried.

If authorities wanted to stop this message from spreading and getting out, they would only need to provide a body, but they never did. Why? Because Jesus is alive. And then there's the radical transformation of the disciples. Before the resurrection, they fled. Peter denied Jesus. They hid in fear. After the resurrection, they publicly proclaimed the resurrection in Jerusalem. They endured imprisonment. They accepted execution for their faith. Cowards don't become martyrs for something they know is a lie. People may die for something they believe is true, but people don't willingly suffer torture for something they know they fabricated. Jesus is alive. One of the most interesting facts to me is the brother of Jesus. John chapter seven, verse five, it says, for even his own brothers did not believe in him. Jesus' own brothers did not believe in him during his ministry. And yet after the resurrection, we see in Acts chapter 15, that his brother James became a leader in the early church and he died a martyr's death for Christ.

Come on, participate with me. How many of you have siblings? Just lift your hand if you have a sibling. Come on. I have a sibling. Do you have siblings as well? No, no, no. Think about your siblings right now for a moment. Get them in your mind. Get them in your mind. What would your brother or sister have to do to make you believe they were God? What would they have to do to make you believe is so much that you would die willingly believing it? Maybe predict their own death and resurrection and then actually pull it off. My sister watches online from Rochester, New York. Sister girl, that's what you're gonna have to do to make me believe that right there. You don't have to tell me about it and then die and come back for me to believe that. That's exactly what Jesus did. That's why James believed and died for his faith. The resurrection of Jesus is not blind faith. It's a historically anchored faith. It's an evidence-based belief. And there's so much more evidence you can go research on your own. The question is not, is there evidence? The question is, what do you do with the evidence?

Today, I hope you will believe in Jesus because you can only find real life, everlasting life by trusting in Jesus. But I've learned that most people's doubts are not intellectual. It's not the evidence we don't understand. It's the situations we're going through in life or that others are going through that we don't understand. It's suffering that makes us doubt our savior. It's misery that makes us reject our maker. So often, our. Our doubt really comes from pain. Where was God when my loved one died? When those innocent children died? When that disaster caused so much suffering in the world? When those people are starving to death? Where was God when I prayed and I prayed and I prayed and nothing happened? Where is God when I see all of the evil on television and social media? The truth is we've all experienced pain. I've personally experienced a lot of pain in my life. And God wants us to be real about our pain. He can handle our pain. He can handle our questions. Healing and a deeper faith actually comes from being real about our pain. And today I want us to be real about our pain. In just a moment when you read the questions that will be on the video,

if the question pertains to you, would you light your phone? You can grab your phone now. And I'll begin by being vulnerable about my pain. And would you join me and be vulnerable? Would you raise your light if you experienced the pain of sexual abuse? That's me. I've experienced the pain of sexual abuse. And that's also me. Sexual abuse has been happening because of the substance abuse. And how does it affect our ability to conduct life? Does it come from STD's? Is it happening because of PTSD? How does it affect our ability of life? Ask yourself. As I've said beforeаб Especially you, Do you ever feel ashamed? Like if they saw your pain They wouldn't look at you the same Do you ever feel afraid? Well I've got news for you If you're hurting I know someone who heals for your wounds If you're broken I know someone who broke for you They couldn't keep him on the cross Couldn't keep him in the tomb

His name is Jesus And he's in the room Do you feel like something changed? Like he called your name And now you'll never be the same Do you feel him in this place? Doing something new? If you're hurting I know someone who heals your wounds And if you're broken I know someone who broke for you They couldn't keep him on the cross Couldn't keep him in the tomb His name is Jesus And he's in the room He's in the room He's in the room He's in the room He's in the room Life was just hitting me as a sophomore in high school I was going through so much And my family is a lot of like addictions and everything And I watched a lot growing up And it was hard I was in a really, really dark place I felt like my depression was taking over I was super anxious all the time And I just didn't have no joy I went through some things like abuse Mentally, physically, emotionally

I died To the news our family, he got diagnosed with cancer. Got to the point where his body just gave out and virtually passed away six months after his diagnosis. It was some like young teens trying to like carjack me and I got shot three times and I had to deal with like all the emotions. I had anger, I was hurt, I didn't understand why. Couldn't catch a break, I was just drowning and like I just feel like I couldn't come up from the water. Nothing satisfied me for that long. I'd still go home feeling depressed, crying myself to sleep. No one even knew that I was fighting like this battle inside. I don't want to feel this deep hurt, this deep sadness anymore. So what can I do to numb it? And so, you know, then turned to drugs which nearly ended my life. I just wanted to throw up my hands and just be like, I'm done, like I just can't, I can't do it anymore. I was a mess and I didn't really know what to do. I've tried everything. I looked for contentment, I looked for happiness. The world promises all these things and then you find out this is so empty. ♪ What are you looking for? ♪ ♪ What are you looking for? ♪ ♪ What are you searching for? ♪ ♪ What are you asking for? ♪

♪ He's in the room, he's in the room. ♪ ♪ He's in the room, he's walking every aisle. ♪ ♪ Touching every wound, he's in the room. ♪ ♪ He's in the room, pouring out his mercy. ♪ ♪ Making all things new, he's in the room. ♪ One day my older biological brother, he came to me and told me that he loves me and that God loves me. That changed everything. Lady, I guess she saw me with my kids and she came and gave me a People's Church card that said back to the movies. I remember walking in the People's Church and the seats were just so dark and I felt so hopeless. I felt so broken, I felt so lost. I just remember feeling like seen and welcomed and loved. This truly is a family. When I walked through those doors and even outside of them. They had said like, if you're going through like a dark season in your life, just like raise your hand. And I remember just like kind of slowly raising my hand. This is why I'm here. I needed this moment. I needed to feel that love. It's such an indescribable feeling to be in worship and to actually feel the Holy Spirit there. And you just feel God's presence in the room. And my life was truly changed. This past fall, I celebrated 10 years clean. I got healed in a lot of different ways

to look back at how far I've come to where I am now. It does get better. I've never been alone all this time. I just needed to choose God. All the things that I was doing, it was a temporary relief. He will ultimately be the one to fulfill me. Is it answers? Is it faith? Is it freedom? Is it strength? Is it silence from the shame? It's in the Lord. We are pressing towards the promise. Everything that He has started, He's faithful to fulfill. It's what He does. So what are you looking for? What are you longing for? What are you searching for? What are you asking for? What are you looking for? What are you longing for? What are you searching for? What are you asking for? He's in the room. He's in the room. He's walking every aisle. Touching every wound. He's in the room. He's in the room.

Pouring out His mercy. Reigning on His new. It's in the Lord because Jesus is in the room. Freedom is in the room. Hope is in the room. Healing is in the room. Because Jesus is in the room. You make it say, You make it feel. You make it make the storm be still. You never fail, You never will. Jesus, Jesus, the bread of life broken for us. The wounded and the worthy one. Those hurts and lies that still remain. Jesus, Jesus, the King of all the wealth and great. The Lord who will forever reign. The name above all the name, Jesus. Oh, oh, oh, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus. He's in the room. He's in the room. He's walking every aisle. He's touching every wall. He's in the room. He's in the room. He's pouring out His mercy. He's making love in June. He's in the room. He's in the room. He's in the room. He's in the room. What are you searching for? What are you longing for? What are you looking for? We've all looked for life in dead places. We've all tried to find fulfillment and purpose in dead places. But Jesus is where we find real life fulfillment and purpose. Jesus said these powerful words in John chapter 11 verse 25. I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even though they die. Today, stop looking for life in dead places and believe in Jesus. If you will trust Jesus, you will find life now and for all of eternity. Let me pray for you. Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus 2,000 years ago to this earth and that He died on the cross. And we celebrate this Easter weekend that He rose again. And Lord, I pray today that many would trust you. I pray many would find hope in you, salvation in you. In Jesus' name, I pray. As eyes are still closed and heads are still bowed, you're here today and you've been looking for life in dead places. As I've been preaching, as you have seen this powerful special Easter performance, you're sitting there today and you're thinking, that's me. I've been looking for life in so many dead places. And today, you want to trust Jesus. You want to find real life, real fulfillment, real purpose. As I count to three, just right there where you're seated, right there, I want you just to slip your hand up. And when you raise your hand, you're saying, I want real life, real fulfillment, real purpose. I want to believe in Jesus, the resurrection and the life. One, two, three. That's it. Just lift your hand now. You want to find life, real life. You want to quit looking for life in dead places. Just shoot your hand up high at every single location online. I turn away from looking for life in dead places. And I turn my life over. To Jesus, the resurrection, and the life, I trust him with my life and with my salvation. And I say with my mouth today, I will live for Jesus the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, amen. Let's celebrate everybody that gave their life to Jesus right now. Come on, would you celebrate?
