Wow. I am actually I don't really know how to feel. I don't know how to feel either. I don't know how in the world we chose number three over all that, but I don't know if I would have chosen the other two anyways. I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful, Max. I believe that love can truly be blind. I believe it looks like it. I hope that this works out well. And at the same time, I would love to see all the drama on Instagram. Why don't you tell everybody what your group experience is going to be like? Yeah. So me and a couple of my college friends, we all decided it's probably time for us to get a group. We made this like two nights ago. Respect. Me and my mentor, I got a mentor who I've been meeting with regularly. His name's Alex Rogers. Fantastic dude. We're all meeting at his house. There's a handful of people. Some of them I don't know. Some of them I've never met. Some of them are my best friends. I'm really excited for it. And if anybody should be excited about the journey, it's college students. Amen. Amen. Young adults, college students. So I was going to ask you, you know, like half of the guys and you don't know half the guys. Are you, what are you feeling about that? You nervous? Fantastic. Yeah. I love making new friends. Yeah. I'm really excited for it. Anytime that I've done a journey, I've always come out the other side with some really strong relationships. So I'm pumped. That's great. It's awesome. I've heard stories of people who've stood up in someone's wedding that they met as a stranger

in a journey group. That is the power of these journey groups. For me, I'm hosting a group here at Crossroads Uptown on Tuesday nights at 7 p.m. My wife is going to do the same thing. I'm leading college guys and she's going to lead college ladies. Open to anybody. We're just excited to meet some people and to see people who are strangers six weeks ago become best friends at the end of the journey. Now for you, you may be going like, I mean, I think I'm in, maybe. I get a little bit nervous joining a group. We want to lower the bar as much as possible to make getting into a journey group as easy as possible for you. So here's what we did. Had a baby. Oh, oh. I mean, talk about love, right? Oh, just the cutest little thing ever. Adorable, adorable. We'll give him a pass for not being here. Unfortunately, yes, we do have to give him a pass. Hannah Driscoll's going to come up. She's going to deliver a fantastic message on identity of God in love and what that looks like for us. It's going to be awesome. Welcome out to All The Feels. Hey, everybody. How are we doing tonight? That's good. Some of you guys are like, oh, I wish I was going to Soto. That's okay. It's okay. You can still go to Soto for a small price of $200. It's no big deal. You can, I know, boo, for real. Seriously. I'm Hannah Driscoll, and I'm so pumped to be with you all tonight. Originally, Jordan, who is a friend of mine, he asked me to come in on a week for anger in this exact same series. And I got to tell you, due to some different situations, like him having a baby, we had to switch up the schedule. And so I'm not talking about anger tonight, which is so funny because I think I'm way more qualified to talk about anger because I know how to get mad. Like, angry black girl is a real thing. It's me. But seriously, tonight I'm here to talk about love, which is unique because I'm seriously not a super love person, or at least I wasn't. In fact, I'm the girl who ran for marriage, who was super not interested in long-term committed relationships,

not at all about what we consider or think about when we think about love. I was the girl who had to get my plot from Hallmark. So picture it, small town girl, you know, in Podunk, Alabama. I don't know. She meets up with a nice big city guy, and the rest is history. They fall in love. That's unfortunately what we've come to believe, that love is this Hallmark plot. But love is this idea that used to once dominate, I mean, all of culture. You had film and literature and everything from Shakespeare to Hallmark movies mirrored the fact that everybody just wants to be in love. But what's so interesting is, what even is it? Because it's low-key a little bit complex, am I right? It's this idea that maybe, just maybe, we could say, I love, I don't know, Cain's chicken. Any lovers of Cain's chicken? Do your taste buds work? Your taste buds work? No? Okay. I'm going to introduce you to seasoning. It's amazing. It should be used when we talk about chicken. No, but seriously, love. You can love Cain's chicken. You can say that, but you also can say, I love my mom. And those are the same words. See, the English language, it just doesn't do us any favors when it comes to love. And God has a different definition. And tonight, I believe he's going to show us what his love means for our life. So let me pray. God, thank you so much for the opportunity to speak to children that belong to you, to daughters, to sons who need to know the truth. And God, I believe that you are the truth. I believe that each and every person is here tonight, not by happenstance, not by coincidence, not by accident, and definitely not by mistake. But that you, God, have something unique and amazing for each of us, including me. That you, Lord, want to show us a truth about your identity that just might change our life. And so tonight, God, would you help me to be

clear? Would you help me to be potent? Would you help me to be understandable? And more than anything, would I decrease so that you can increase? In the name of Jesus, amen. So no matter how you got here, maybe, just maybe, you're wondering, what is this love idea? Well, it's funny because Hallmark, which I brought up earlier, is a movie company. And they are the originators of the plot of boy meets girl, girl likes boy, and they reconnect and bump into each other and fall in love. But they're also the originator of things like Valentine's Day. And right at the turn of the 18th century, they started to do something like Valentine's cards. And what was prominent on these Valentine's cards was this little baby cherub with wings and rosy cheeks. And that little cherub was called, anybody know? Cupid, right. And Cupid was known for having his wings and his little arrow, and he would point it at Cariel and say, oh, fall in love. It's amazing. And everybody wants a Cupid, just just point me in the direction of love and I will run there because it feels like maybe there's security there, maybe there's hope there, maybe there's something there for me. But before Cupid was depicted as this little rosy cutesy little baby, it's actually in the Greek mythology, Cupid was really a heartthrob. He was a young adult, much like yourself. He had an eight pack, and he was the talk of the town. He was Venus's son. And his power in his arrows was not just to make people fall in love. It had the power to actually cause destruction. So at that time when Cupid was depicted, people would run from Cupid because they

didn't want their love to end in the destruction and misfortune that he almost always caused. And see, what's so interesting, wondering if that feedback is me, what's so interesting about that is that somewhere along the way, I think we might actually agree with that version of Cupid. That love feels a little bit more like it's just destined to end in destruction, a little bit of hurt, a little bit of failure. If it ain't hurting, it ain't loving. Somewhere along the way, we've lost the plot. And no wonder we feel like love can be in destruction because culture actually gives us a definition of love that is so off that it makes actually no sense. Now, I'm a Meg Thee Stallion girly myself. I really am. And Meg, she has a song that's called Lover Girl because she's in love right now. What's so fascinating, though, about the song is that if you get past the beat, which is awesome, the lyrics, unfortunately, don't include a single word about love. See, that's the culture we're in, where when we talk about love, what we really mean is deep affirmation, strong affinity, lustful desire, hope for unconditional but probably conditional. That's what love has come to actually mean. The great poet Tupac Shakur said, I want the stuff talking about stuff that don't wear off, it doesn't fade, it lasts for crazy days and crazy nights,

whether you're wrong or whether you're right. See, the type of love that Tupac is describing in this moment is really the love that we all want. It's the unconditional love. It's the love that fully knows someone and somehow still chooses them. It fully knows their flaws and their shortcomings, what makes them awesome, and still says, I love you. See, that's more similar to God's idea of love. And this is the type of love, unconditional love, that we see display in the Bible. Love is actually not mentioned until late in the Bible. Here's the way that Tim Keller describes the love of the Bible. It says, love is never primarily defined in the Bible as a feeling. It is at its foundation, at least a commitment and a promise. The word love, like I said, it's not mentioned until much later in the very first book of the Bible, which is Genesis. You would think it might come up first because when people talk about love, they usually talk about God. But we don't see this word love pop up until Genesis 22. Here's what it says when it's talking about a man whose name is Abraham, described loving his son. Genesis 22 one says this, after these things, God tested Abraham and said to him, Abraham, he says, here I am.

He said, take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love and go to the land of Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on the mountains, which I shall tell you. Now we don't have a ton of time. So I don't have time to read the whole story. So you guys are just gonna have to get the Hannah version. Is that okay? That's okay, Hannah version. Don't look this up. It is not on Bible Gateway. It is not in your Bible app. If that's to you, if you go to Crossroads, it's not in your Crossroads app. This is just my interpretation. So here's how it runs down. Abraham gets that word from God. Now, mind you, Abraham is an important dude because he's one of the first people in the Bible where we see him obey God. He is a man who God promises that through him, many nations will come to know God. He says that his offspring is gonna be like the stars and the sand. And these are some big promises to a man who's like, by the way, hunched over and a million years old, and oh, by the way, his wife can't have kids. Crazy. And so he gets this word from God that he's gonna have a son.

And so finally, after many years and many times of Abraham praying to God and God listening to him and him being obedient to God, he actually does have a son with his wife, Sarah. His wife, Sarah, is more like me. She was like, I ain't getting ready to have no kids. I'm, first of all, my back hurt, my bra too tight. Everything is hurting. I'm not getting ready to have no kids. She laughs at God, but yet in any way, God, because he's good, he sort of just answers the promise anyway. And so this is a moment that I want you to understand what's at stake because this is a man who thought he'd never. have kids and so now God is asking him if he would go and sacrifice him. What is he talking about? During this time it would have been very popular, would have been very understood that when you wanted a response from gods with an S you would do an animal sacrifice. So this is a super normal thing. Abraham had sacrificed to God before as a sign of repentance or as a sign of commitment. It was just something that you did at the time. Can get more into that in the Old Testament if that interests you. So this makes sense that he's on his way up the mountain. Now a lot of times when people preach this message they preach it like little Isaac is just little old Isaac and the Bible says that on the way up the mountain that they look and they have the servants with them and they've got the donkeys with them so they're trucking along and they've got the little firewood with them and Isaac is noticing that we've got a kindling and we've got something to start the fire with but daddy I don't see no sacrifice. What's getting ready to happen? And a lot of times when it's preached everyone usually says it like Isaac's voice is really small like you know dad hey

buddy I'm wondering where the lamb is do you see the bull that we're gonna kill? That's how they kind of depict it. But history tells us that Isaac would have been a full-grown man, that he more likely would have been like 20-something. So some kind of way the Bible just skips a scene and the next scene is Abraham at the top of the mountain with Isaac and the Bible says that some kind of way he manages to build a fire and bind up a fully grown man as an old man. Now what's interesting about that is that means that Abraham was determined and so here we are we pick up with the story with Isaac on the altar, grown man on the altar. Genesis 22 11 says then the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said Abraham, Abraham and he said here I am. Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him for now I know that you fear God seeing that you've not withheld your son your only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked and behold behind him was a ram that was caught in the thicket by his horns and Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt sacrifice instead of his son. This story shows us something incredibly important about a super super thing that is clear in the Bible and that is that love is God's idea. See in this moment we see that God doesn't actually define love as a feeling. He's not actually pointing to Abraham's sacrifice or the desire for him to even hurt his son to show God his devotion. He's not looking at that as a fleeting moment. See in this moment we see God define that love acts. Love simply does. That there's a level of commitment when we're talking about the love of Christ. Abraham shows God that he loves him and God knows that Abraham loves his son. Later on the Bible talks about, that's an Old Testament book, later on in the New Testament the Bible talks about who this God of love is. Who could have such an idea? In John 335 it says this, the father loves the son and has given all things into his hand. Now in this moment maybe that if you don't know the Bible that that verse that I just read in Genesis it won't mean much to you but if you read over it too fast it might actually remind you of another story. See later on in the Bible we see a moment where God actually gives up his only son and gives it as a sacrifice and he does that to

show his love to each and every one of us so that we could be forever connected back to God and that right there is the gospel all the way in Genesis. But in John 335 what it's pointing to is that there is a love that exists between the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit also known as the Trinity and that love is the very essence of who God is. So it's not just that love is God's idea but love is God's identity. See if God was unipersonal which means just one being then he can have all of eternity forever power sovereignty and greatness but not love. Love could not be a part or at the heart of the universe only power but because God exists in God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit then the very foundation of what we believe actually starts with love because there's a love that exists in the triune nature of God. It means that love is God's essence. It's his identity. See the story of Abraham points us in the direction of Jesus. It is 34 and six. God has this moment where Moses, who's another character in the Bible you don't need to worry about, ask him a good question. He's like, who are you, man? And why are you talking to me? And God has a moment where he can describe himself really as anything he wants to. And here's what he says. The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, the Lord, the Lord, I am a merciful God, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love. In faithfulness, keeping faithfulness, steadfast love for thousands, forgiving, iniquity, transgression, and sin. That's how he describes himself. Now he could have said, I am the Lord God,

the all powerful, the almighty. I have all power in my hands. I created the universe. I own heaven and hell. He could have said that. Instead he says, I'm slow to anger. I am loving. See, this identity of love that God has is an identity that he only does keep for himself, but then he passes it to us. See, he gives us the right to have our own identity as love. Now the problem with that though, is that our experiences in life, when they come up, they can give us a different definition of love. They can give us a different definition of God. And it can be really difficult to even see that God might be love. If you have unfair moments in your life, you might learn that love is actually Hannah conditional. If you have trauma, you might learn that love is painful. And if you have hurt, then you might tell yourself, love, Hannah, is not worth the risk because I've been there and it did not quite work out. But the world is interested in selling us a bill of goods of what love is without ever actually giving us a real promise to hold on to. See, the type of love that God gives us,

the type that is available to us, it acts. It changes status. It changes worth. In 1 John 4 and 7, he says, "'Beloved, let us love one another, "'for love is from God. "'And whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. "'And anyone who does not love does not know God, "'because God is love.'" So if love is God's idea, if love is God's identity, then what does that mean for us, who he now says we can too be called loved? If it's true that God is love, if it's true that we get our identity from God when we come into relationship with him, which is what the Bible says, then it means that that has the power to truly change everything. Now, unfortunately, that change is a choice. The desire to walk in the love of Jesus and receive the love of Jesus is actually a choice. But if it has the power that this 1 John scripture is saying that it does, then it does way more than mere feelings can accomplish. Jesus' love definition counters culture. And when we encounter the love of Jesus, we aren't just encountering a fleeting feeling, we're encountering the person God,

manifest in the person of Jesus. We get an opportunity to come face-to-face with someone who died on the cross for us just to show us and prove to us that he is love. Now, what makes Jesus' love any different? Because it would make sense that a preacher girl on a stage will use the Bible to support her claims that Jesus is love. But I'll prove it to you, because if love acts, if God is truly the essence of love, then everything around us in creation, everything around us in the universe only breathes love. See, God's desire for the earth before sin was perfect peace, perfect shalom, and we see that represented when we see creation at its best. But more often than not, do we experience love from culture's point of view. See, culture says that you need to look and be a certain way before you can be loved. And God says that I made you, I knitted you perfectly, I know exactly who you are, I know every hair on your head, I know the things you're gonna do that might disappoint me, and I still love you. Culture says that love is unstable, it evolves and sometimes fails. And Jesus says, I am the Lord God that changes not. Culture says that love is about discovering the person that completes you. And Jesus lets us know that when we encounter him, he can give us a life and that life to the full.

See, God's love changes worth, it changes legacies, it changes your goals, it changes your endeavors, it changes your idea of success. And it does that because it works from the inside out. Now, if you're anything like me. Your experiences, like I said, have told you that love is one thing, when it's really not. I think growing up, the reason I didn't wanna get married, I mentioned that earlier, is because I thought, if I get married and there's a risk, I'm gonna get divorced. And getting divorced, that sounds way worse than ever loving at all. I'm not interested in that risk. I'm not even interested in being that vulnerable. See, my understanding of love was so warped that I was so unwilling to even trust God in that area. Maybe your definition of love is different. Maybe you're looking for something like love in the wrong places, trying to fill a void, trying to ask for something to tell you your worth, when only God can do that. Trying to look for something to fill a gap, when only God's love can do that. Trying to desire maybe just a romantic glove. God, I'll even take a like, because I just wanna feel whole. Well, can I submit to you that that same God who had a plan all the way back in the book of Genesis actually has a plan right now for you?

And that that plan is that you would learn and come to know the full person of Jesus. And that if you're already following him, you aren't like, oh, Hannah, I'm good on this. But when we follow Jesus, let me speak into the people who have chosen that and say, I'm actually in already. If you choose to follow Jesus, then yes, maybe you have truly accepted the love of God. But the thing about the love of God is that it's coupled with the light of God. And any place in your life that is dark, any place in your life that seeps darkness, that you've not yet let in the light, requires the love of God. Second Thessalonians three and five, it says, may the Lord lead your hearts into full understanding and expression of the love of God and the patient endurance that comes from Christ. What's so beautiful about that scripture is I'm gonna read, that is the New Living Translation. And that translation really lets us know that we actually don't have to do anything to receive God's love except say yes. See, it's his faithfulness that's actually leading us to him in the first place. It's his desire to know us that's actually drawing us in the first place. It's not like he's got us on a little chaparral trying to tell us what to do.

Instead, he gives us every opportunity to come to him, to know him so that every single void in our life can be shifted and changed forever. So maybe you came in here tonight with a set idea of what you think love is, but I challenge you tonight to think a little bit deeper and imagine that the love of Christ wants to come into your life and truly change everything about it. That if your worth was ever in anything except Jesus, he wants to come and turn that on its head. That if your identity was anywhere except as son, as daughter of Christ, that his interest is in changing that, not just for today, but for generations to come. Because when that happens, he's not just puffed up, he's not just excited. What he is is so pumped that a son and a daughter came into complete fullness of knowing him. That's what's on the table. That is what is available to us tonight through the love of Jesus. And so tonight we got a choice. We really do. We got a choice. We can choose to keep doing whatever we're doing, to keep filling our love tank with whatever we think has been working, to keep watching reality shows and listening to podcasts and reading books and watching movies

and letting that be the definition of our love, or we can turn back to 1 John and remember that we have an opportunity to encounter the God that is love. There's an old song and it's a children's hymn, but I love it because it's a reminder that yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me, for the Bible it tells me so. So God, right now we have an opportunity, each of us, a choice before us, to receive more of your love or to change and do nothing. God, would you give us boldness? Would you give us the understanding of just how deep, how wide, how imaginative, how amazing your love is for us? Would you open up our understanding? Would you help us to be bold tonight? that we may receive the love that you have for us. In the mighty name of Jesus, everybody said amen. I think the band is like Hannah finished way too fast. Here's the thing though, there's only one message for tonight, there's only one moment for tonight. The truth about who God is truly, truly speaks volumes for itself. And tonight, there's only one choice in front of you. The choice is not if you'll get it right every time, if after today you won't mess up, no. The choice is, will you let the love of Christ seep into every aspect of your life and allow it to tell you who you are? That is what is available to us today.

I believe it. Woo! You have a choice tonight. You have a choice to make right now, and as we sing this next song together, here's what we're gonna do, we believe here at YA that we shouldn't do anything alone. And maybe right now, you came in here tonight thinking, you thought, man, I know God loves me, but didn't really connect in your heart yet. And maybe right now, you just need to ask God to do what only He can do, is move that out of your thoughts and into your whole heart, to truly and really and fully believe it, and maybe believe it again for the thousandth time, whatever it is, His arms are open wide to you tonight, and we don't want you to do this alone. And so, as we sing this next song, there are going to be people around the room in red lanyards and glow sticks, and we would love for you to go and pray literally about anything that you need right now. Maybe that's what you need to do in this action step, maybe the one thing that you need to do is actually just sit and talk to God and say, God, would you do a work in me right now? And then don't move until He does, and maybe what you need to do is to stand and lift your hands in the air and say, God, I believe that you love me, I live in that,

I stand in that, and I want more of that tonight, and I agree with the fact that you love me, whatever it is, this next space is for you. I know there's a lot of people sitting around you, but for these next five to seven minutes as we sing this song, this space is for you and for God. So let's just take a minute. God, we're open to whatever you have to say now. We love you. Well, the good news is, this is not something you fabricate, the love of Jesus. It's not something that you just have to make up yourself.

If you sing hard enough, you might feel it. This is something you simply accept. Now tonight, there might be some of us who need to accept that love for the first time, and the truth is, I could talk till I'm blue in the face about what love is, but I just want to show you what love did. Love took an innocent man that was fully God, fully man in the person of Jesus, to come down from his divine nature and come to earth for me and you. He lived a perfect, sinless life, and died a death that he did not deserve. And he did that so that you and I could have forever access back to the Father, back to God, back to the one who tells us who we are, back to the one who gives us our true identity, back to the one who says that we belong to him. We needed that access, and we could not get it ourselves. And so here is Jesus stretched out, making our sin as far from God as the east is to the west. And tonight, you can receive that love by saying a simple prayer just like this. God, I believe that you are the Son of God. I believe that you died. I believe that you rose from the dead on the third day. And because of that, you have all power in your hand because you beat death for me. And so, God, I want to go a different way. I want some of that love, and I want to follow you for the rest of my life. You can say something just like that. You can repeat the words that I just said. I want to follow you for the rest of my life. And if you've made that prayer, the Bible declares that if you've confessed with your mouth, and if you truly believe that in your heart, hey, then guess what, brother? Guess what, sister? Welcome to the family of God because you are saved. Welcome to love that does not end. Welcome to love that will chase you down for the rest of your life, telling you who you are,

giving you identity, giving you purpose, giving you a new definition of success. That, my friends, that is the love of Jesus, and it's available to you for now and for always. Amen. I'm removing all of the things that would move me further from You. I think You could not be enough. It's not lost on me what You saved me from. And I'm running, stumbling I know, but I'm coming to give You this offering. My worship I'll never withhold, broken but You call it beautiful. Where the tears of the desperate reach the feet of the Savior, there's nothing I wouldn't offer. There's no waste at the altar. Where the heart of surrender meets the hands of the Maker, there's nothing I wouldn't offer. There's no waste at the altar.

There's no waste with You, Father. Things I've treasured, oh couldn't come close to Your presence. Grace upon grace, who could measure? No, nothing could measure. And I'm returning, oh back to the one I am running, to give Him my love, cause He took a sinner like me. He washed me with grace and then set me free, oh. Where the tears of the desperate reach the feet of the Savior, there's nothing I wouldn't offer. There's no waste at the altar. Where the heart of surrender meets the hands of the Maker, there's nothing I wouldn't offer. There's no waste at the altar. There's no waste at the altar. There's no waste at, come on give Him everything. There's no waste at the altar. There's no waste. So come lay your broken dreams at the altar, and every victory at the altar. Fear and anxiety cannot live here. There's no waste at the altar. Let your heart sing out and tell Him you love Him. Don't make it perfect, just let it be honest. He can use anything, sit back and watch Him. There's no waste, come on sing it out, come lay. So come lay your broken dreams at the altar, and every victory at the altar. The thing about altars is that when you read in the Bible it's it's a painful and a really messy thing, it's where things go to die. It's where sacrifices go to be made to a perfect God from an imperfect people. But because of Jesus, the one who's put on the altar, we can approach that altar and instead of us being the ones who are sacrificed, instead of us being the ones doing the sacrificing, we meet the eyes of a Savior who is perfect, who is strong enough, who is mighty enough, who is loving enough, who is forgiving enough to meet us there every single time. He takes the blood off your hands, He takes the guilt off your hands, He takes the shame off your hands, and He puts it on the altar Himself. He puts it on Himself and puts Himself on the altar for you. He already did it one time and once and for all and now the only thing that we have left to do is to bring ourselves to the altar over and over and over and over and over and over again because He doesn't get tired of it. He doesn't get tired of you coming to say,

Jesus, I've got to let this thing go again and again and again and again. You know, the power of God follows repentance. It follows when we say, God, I'm wrong and I need you to make me right. This happens, this happens on a regular basis in our church. God is on the move in our church. He's on the move in our church. He's on the move in our generation. These nights, I hope they remind you of two things. That God is not giving up on your generation, and that your generation is hungry for God. I hope it reminds you of that. I hope it reminds you, and we're going to do another one of these in just a couple weeks in March, on March 5th, all about anxiety, anxiety. Come on. Hey, listen. If tonight was fun for you, tonight you made a friend, if tonight you encountered God and encountered His love, let this be a sign to you. Let this be a sign that God's after you, He loves you, and you've got to get where God's presence is on a regular basis. These once a month things are amazing, and yet, God dwells in His people who meet on a weekly basis in the local church, which means this Sunday, you've got to get to your local Crossroads site on Sunday. If you're a young adult, if you're an 18 to 29-ish year old living around this site, we brought Crossroads Uptown back because we believe in those two truths, that God is not done with your generation, and your generation is hungry for God. Your friends need Jesus, and this is a place where they can meet them, and a place where you can take steps in your faith with God, too.
