We're Builders Part 1

We're beginning a brand new series at the start of this year. I'm excited about it. If you have your Bibles, turn with me to the book of Nehemiah. One of my favorite books of the Bible, the book of Nehemiah. It's in the Old Testament. Get through the first five books of the Old Testament, then you go to like a bunch of ones and twos, ones and twos, ones and twos, Kings and Chronicles and Samuel and Ezra. Then Nehemiah is right there. This series title is We're Builders. We're Builders. Turn to the person next to you and say, We're Builders. Turn to your second choice. Tell them, We're Builders. We're Builders. We're Builders. We're Builders. We're Builders. We're Builders. We're Builders. We're Builders. I just want to remind you a little bit of the DNA that you have as a follower of Jesus. As a follower of Jesus, you're not designed just to be a spectator. You're a builder. Not designed just to sit back and let life happen to you. You're a builder. Not designed just to exist. You're a builder. If you're in your marriage, you're not just designed to let your marriage kind of go wherever it wants to go. You're a builder.

If you're a teenager, you're a builder. You're a young adult, you're a builder. I want you to see yourself as a builder, as a follower of Jesus. You and I are not going to dumb ourselves down to some weak, anemic version of Christianity that some are trying to sell us, telling us that us following Jesus is just about church attendance. No, my friends. Jesus did not die and rise from the dead so that you and I can attend church. We're a part of his story, and it's a much bigger story than any of our individual lives can muster up. We are a part of the kingdom of God advancing in our generation. We are a part of heaven coming to earth, and in order for that to happen, you got to see yourself properly. You can't see yourself as just someone tossed aside and forgotten about. You have to see yourself as a son and a daughter of Almighty God purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, called for such a time as this, and I believe this book of Nehemiah is going to help us understand how to live that out. We're builders. Our campus pastors from Guatemala are actually here, Nate and Whitney Louder, and we love them so very much. And Nate, before he jumped into full-time vocational ministry, he was in full-time ministry in the marketplace, because you're always in full-time ministry no matter where you are, but he was a civil engineer. As a civil engineer, his job was to look at a piece of property, a piece of land that would be 15, 20, 30 miles out, and some developers would say, hey, the city is moving that direction. What do we need as far as infrastructure to make sure that city can thrive there? Because right now, there's no plumbing. There's no sewage system. So Nate and the team will be looking to see what do we need to do to get ready for something that's not there yet, preparing.

This is all part of the building process. You can see in the Old Testament, God would have people that would scout the land. Then you have people that would acquire the land. Same thing that would happen in the marketplace. You have these different aspects of building. Building is not just putting up the walls. Building sometimes is needing to dig up the foundation and get the dirt ready for what's going to be put in the dirt. Sometimes it's not just about what's above the ground. It's about what's underneath the ground as well, making sure the foundation is right. We're builders. We are the ones that might help get the walls up. Some of us might be designers and architects, and others of us are going to help with plumbing, and others of us have these different aspects, but all of it is a part of building. I need you to see that you are a part of that story. Jesus is building his church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. You're invited into that. This is why just attending church and sitting on our hands and hoping Earl does a good message or the band sings my song is not enough. You're called to something more. We're builders. Go with me to Nehemiah chapter 1. Hopefully you're there already. The words of Nehemiah, son of ... Do we even want to try to mess this name up? I don't know. I don't know that we do. Ha? Ka? You gonna go Lee or Lye, what are you gonna do? I'll go Lee.

In the month of Kislev, in the 20th year, while I was in the citadel of Susa, I'm gonna pause there. Because you read that and it goes, okay, none of that means anything to me. Right? You know, you read some parts of the Bible, you go, cool. Let's get to the good stuff. What does it have to do with my job? What does it have to do with my marriage? What does it have to do with my mental health? What does it have to do with my family? Come on, I'm trying to get out of debt. What does it have to do with that? I'm trying to become a man of God. I'm trying to get rid of some bondage that is in my life. What does this have to do with that? There are no unimportant details in scripture. All of them matter. And here, from the very beginning, we find out some things that, again, we wouldn't know unless we dig in. Now, those who are reading this, they would have known this. They would have known when they see this month of Kislev, when that was, towards the end of the year, maybe November or December. They would also know, since he's using that type of language, this is after the exile. Because this language wasn't used in the beginning. This language was used after the Babylonians had taken over the children of Israel. You would also see this Citadel of Susa, and you would realize that Nehemiah is not in some broken down area. He is actually in the palace. So we're hearing from someone who is in a position of influence and strength in the culture.

So all of this is right there. Now keep on going with me. His brother shows up. His brother. We got another H word. Ha? Nah? What do you think? Nye? Or knee? Who knows? One of my brothers came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. So now we discover that he has a brother. His brother is visiting him, and he is asking a question about a place that is about 800 to 1,000 miles away from him. This is not next door. This is far away. But he asks his brothers, what's going on with the Jewish remnant that had survived the exile? And he also asks them about Jerusalem. Again, exile. God picks some kids, okay? It happens through Abraham. And he picks the Jewish people. They're going to be the ones through whom and through which the Savior of the world will come. Now God picked the Jews not because of anything that they did. They were actually small, broken down. There was not some massive army.

It's God's grace. I'm choosing you. And out of you will come the Savior of the world. Jesus was Jewish. So now God has picked these kids. He's wanting them to live as a light to the world so that whenever they see, whenever people in the world see them, they think about God. That's the plan. You're my billboard. You're my reel. You're my advertisement. I got the stars. I've got the sun. I got the moon. I got the sky. I got all of that. And I've got you. I want you to be my billboard. It's a picture of us today as well. You're designed to be the billboard. That when people drive past you, they should go, oh, yeah, Jesus. See your life and then think about God. That was the design. But the people of Israel, they decided, no, I want to do things my own way. Does this sound familiar? God extending kindness, mercy, and grace to them and they go, I think I got a better way. Does that sound like any of us idiots? I mean, you're smart, but we're dumb. I mean, we're intelligent, but we're so foolish. I've got a path for you.

Hey, don't steal. Don't kill. Don't covet in your heart. Keep me first. Make sure you remember the Sabbath. He's written out all these rules and not so that we can be burdened. by something but so that we can live free and that the society can operate the way it was designed to when people see us walking in abundance and in strength they go oh my goodness I want that again we are the advertisement but the people of God choose to go their own way we say no we want to marry who we want to marry do what we want to do go where we want to go say what we want to say drink what we want to drink talk how we want to talk we don't want your way God we want our own way and whenever you do that God keeps sending these prophets and he's saying hey cut it out cut it out cut it out stop it this is when you you text to the person and you can feel don't don't send it don't do it but your thumbs keep going don't do it Holy Spirit telling you stop it right now don't say that don't say that take that picture off of there don't send that picture don't say I'm lonely send and what God says is when you and I choose to keep pushing him aside it does not lead us to freedom it leads us to bondage and this is the picture that we get they end up in exile not because God hates them but because God has to do something to get their attention to say sons and daughters of mine you're not designed to live for yourself so now they're in bondage well they're in bondage and we won't get into all the details here but because there's a lot of history here but the Babylonians take them and then after the Babylonians are running things for a while the Persians come in as a quick side note that's why when you read the book of Daniel you kind of sounds like the first half and the second half like they the first half they know who he is second half they don't know who he is it's because it was the Babylonians and then it was the Persians so the Persian the Babylonians beat up that you put the Jews in exile and then the Persians came in later and

they beat up the Babylonians so now this is where Nehemiah is he is during the Persian reign and he happens to be in the palace so this exile has happened I want you to watch this now okay now now let's dig into the text a little bit more you also with me okay okay so they said to me those who survived the exile everybody say survived those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and distress they survived the exile they're away for years and years they've come back but they didn't come back and now they're living in a place of strength they survived but they're still in trouble they survived but they're still in disgrace they survived but they're they're hanging on by a thread they survived but everything is not right I made it through 2025 I survived but in 2026 I'm still in some trouble I made it through kovat I survived it but I'm still in some trouble I made it through the funeral but I'm still in some trouble I like to think if I survive this that the next season I go into is going to be everything is going to be great but in this text we are told they survived but they don't go from surviving to everything being great they going from they go from surviving to still being in trouble this is where you and I so this is where I think the text is very much like you and I it's very much like the life that we live in because many of us have made it through some certain things and we think if I make it through the thing then on the other side of this thing it's gonna be so smooth it's gonna be so easy because I just made it through the hard thing but they made it through the hard thing and then came into another hard thing it's not the same hard thing they're not in the place that they used to be but they're still in a tough place and this is where some of us find ourselves and you're looking at God going God have you forgotten about me and I need you to know that God has not forgotten about you this is why this book matters in our life here I was thinking about killing myself I went and I got some help and now I think everything's gonna be good but I still feel in trouble I started the company it's getting off the ground but I'm still in trouble I got my master's degree I thought that would be the thing that was gonna check all the

boxes for me but I still feel in trouble I got the wedding ring, but I still feel in trouble because I'm a husband, but I don't, I'm married, but I don't know how to be a husband. I'm married, but I don't know how to be a wife. I've got the job, but I don't know how to be a leader. I've got the house, but I've got my old mindset of lack and scarcity. So I'm in this other place, but even though I'm in the other place, it does not mean that everything is right now because I'm not where I used to be. I'm glad I'm not there, but I wish I actually wasn't right here with everything looking how it looks right now. Because we find out in verse number three again, look at this, verse number three. It says, the walls, the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates have been burned with fire. Imagine at your house, you had no walls, none. So it's time for you to take a shower. People can just look in and see what's going on. It's time for you to sit down with your family to eat. Time for you to have a conversation with your roommate. You're sitting down, everybody can see your business, looking at you. What are they doing in there? Why are they doing that? No privacy at all. This is not just an issue of no privacy.

This is an issue of no security. If anything has value, they are always susceptible to some kind of security. They are susceptible to someone coming in and terrorizing them at any point in time. The walls are down, the gates are burned, and they are utterly exposed. I'm not in exile anymore. This remnant, this small group of people out of millions, we're not sure exactly how many, but it's not even 100,000 have decided to come back. The walls are broken down. So now, what does Nehemiah do with this information? He's in a place of power. He is 800 to 1,000 miles away. What's he do with this newfound information? Verse number four. When I heard these things, when I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days, I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Nehemiah does not complain. Nehemiah does not turn a blind eye. Nehemiah in this moment feels the brokenness of a place that he's probably never even been to. That's 800 miles away. And he is in a spot of privilege and power. And he still feels for people that are his people, but he's never been there.

And he begins to weep and mourn and fast. First, Nehemiah is a type of Christ. It gives us a picture of our savior all the way back here. That Jesus, in his place of power in heaven, saw the brokenness and the hurt and the walls broken down in humanity. And he could have stayed there in heaven all by himself. But Jesus decided, I'm not staying here in heaven. I am being sent because God so loved the world that he sent his one and only son. And I'm going to come into the world and I know that the walls are broken down. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to enter into the pain of those who have brokenness and those who have difficulty and those who are dealing with fear and those who are battling anxiety and those who have gone through divorce and those who may be blind or lame or hurting. I'm going to enter into that place and I'm not going to stay disconnected, but instead I'm going to come and I'm gonna bring solution. I'm gonna bring hope. I'm going to bring healing because that's what the savior does. If you're taking notes, jot down this verse, Matthew chapter nine, I think it's verse number 36. Matthew chapter nine, verse number 36. It talks about how Jesus has compassion on the people. He sees them and he sees that they are helpless

and harassed like sheep without a shepherd. And when Jesus sees people hurting, Jesus does not turn a blind eye to anyone's hurt. Jesus is not indifferent towards the pain that you're navigating. He's not indifferent toward the pain that you walked through last year. He's not indifferent. Toward the pain that you're navigating with your kids or with your parents or with your employees or in your own soul The torment that you feel Jesus is not indifferent towards that as a matter of fact when he saw the people he was moved in his gut He had something happen deep on the inside where he was moved with compassion Towards you and towards me and I'm so thankful that we do not have a Savior that keeps his arms folded and said That's your fault. That's you that's on you. He says no I'll unfold my arms as a matter of fact. I'm gonna stretch my arms all the way out I'm going to get on a cross for you. I'm going to shed my blood for you I'm gonna go in the grave for you, and then I'm gonna come out of that grave for you So if you feel like you're dead, you're not done because I got out of the grave so you can get out of the grave Jesus here is the perfect picture of what it looks like to see compassion lived out in a powerful way Shepherd or sheep without a shepherd. I had a friend I was talking to the other day she was telling me about her dad who has Alzheimer's and She got a phone call from the police and they said oh we have we have your dad and He didn't commit any crime. He was Just wandering around and some guy found him or some lady found him and Connected with the cops the cops got his name somehow and reached out to his daughter Alright, she goes and finds her her dad Come to find out her dad was at his home with a couple of friends And I believe he's in a senior living center, and he was with some friends and decided I'm gonna go get some wine. You know because we're hanging out. You know they're trying to turn up and I

Guess you do that even a senior living center and they head over to he heads to the store and They find him with the wine, but he's about a mile or so from his house. She brings him back to his house And waiting there is a woman in the house. There's a woman in the house She cut he comes into the door this woman starts kissing him all over the face His daughter's like what in the world is going on here Come so come to find out the woman who is kissing all over him. She's married. Okay, okay? Here's a tea We think she might have Alzheimer's as well Is it adultery when two people have no recollection That they're even married I Don't know we'll talk about that another time on a podcast or a master class I don't know somebody with bigger theology degrees can figure that one out But he's just wandering around wandering around wandering around If that's not a picture of our day at age of teenagers just I Don't even know I Don't even know what I'm supposed to do with my life. I don't know if my life matters. I Don't know how many husbands and wives are feeling this. I'm just wandering. Yeah, I'm married. I'm wandering like sheep without a shepherd and Jesus says let me come in here And I'm going to be your shepherd so that you don't have to wander around for the rest of your life I'll lead you and I'll guide you just follow my voice So now jump back in here with me We're just walking through the Bible here. You guys okay? You guys okay with this? Even if you weren't that's okay. I'm gonna keep on going For some days I mourned this verse number four again for some days I mourned and fast prayed before the God of heaven Then I said Lord The God of heaven the great and awesome God now he's starting to pray

He's starting to pray. We're gonna we're gonna see how he prays Lord the God of heaven the great and awesome God who keeps his covenant of love With those who love him and keep his commandments. I want to get this is real practical I'm gonna get real real practical for a quick second. I want to get real real practical I want to talk about some different types of prayer for a second The first type of prayer I want to talk about is what we're going to call adoration adoration Nehemiah starts his prayer off because some of you are like, I don't even know how to pray I don't even know how to pray. I'm gonna help you how to pray right here Because we're about to begin 21 days of prayer and fasting. So I want to make sure you know How to pray here because it's not just you sitting and just go scrolling on your phone First here he starts with prayer off Lord, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God. He starts by adoring and Second here When he begins prayer And he goes opening his eyes magnifying who God is. He begins to lift up the majesty and the power of God. This He starts with non-verbal is a form of prayer, adoration. Instead of when you wake up in the morning grabbing your phone, I want to encourage you instead, let the first words out of Worshiping your mouth. Be man, God. You are awesome. You are amazing. You are wonderful. There Counting is no one like you. What would our church begin to look like? What would your spiritual life begin to look like? What would your day look like if you did not start off just with, oh I'm tired, oh my back, oh my knee, oh I'm sleepy, oh get this out of my eyes, oh why are you in my bed? If it started off, if it started off instead with God, you are great, you are awesome, you are wonderful, and there is no one like you. It positions your heart from the very beginning, not to lift up your burdens, but to lift up the majesty and the awesomeness and the power of God.

He begins with adoring. Then he goes on from there. Watch this with me. Let your eye, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. He's now praying for your servants. He's praying for someone else. This is called intercession. This is when you are not praying for yourself. You're praying for someone else. He begins to lift. When Onika and I first got married, somebody gave us a book, The Power of a Praying Husband and The Power of a Praying Wife. And I don't know if the book is any good. It's good? Okay, all right, so it's good. I did not look through all the theology of the book. I'm just trusting that it's about Jesus and all of that. But you write in the name of your spouse. It's like, you know, Lord, I pray for, and you know, I have the opposite power of a praying husband, so I wrote in Onika's name. And then you can just read the prayer out. And I think there were those scriptures, you know, at the bottom. It was beautiful. You're starting to pray for your spouse. Instead of talking about them, instead of just complaining to them, you begin to pray for them. You start praying for your spouse. You start beginning to lift them up. I'm coming to you, God, on their behalf. I'm asking for you to do something for them. And it's so powerful when you and I aren't just, and it's okay to pray prayers for yourself, but aren't just praying prayers for ourselves, but we're getting to pray prayers for others. Adoration, intercession. I'm standing in the middle for someone else. But it doesn't stop there. Here's another form of prayer that can sometimes be missed in the American church for sure. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's family, have committed against you. I confess the what? The sins. Yeah. The sins. That God has a mark and we miss it. That God has a goal and we keep on shooting air balls. That God has an open receiver that we keep on throwing the ball 10 yards short every single time. Over and over again, God wants us to hit the mark and we do not hit the mark. Do not hit the mark. And now what Nehemiah does is he steps in and he doesn't come and say, I've got it all together. I'm so perfect. I'm a good person. You owe me. He comes humbly. I confess my sins and not just my sins. I'm confessing the sins of the people and the sins of my father's family. This right here could be a breakthrough for some of us

right here because some of us are holding on to the wreckage and the baggage of our family and we're holding on to it as our identity. And instead of holding on to that as our identity, I want you to confess that and be freed from it. That God, that is not who we are. We went the wrong way. Our family did not honor you. Our family did not put you first. Our family did not celebrate you. Our family elevated money or greed or selfishness or sex or this or that. But God, I... I wanna say on behalf of my family that we ask for forgiveness. We confess this sin and this can be the breakthrough that some of you are waiting for. That you can be the one that changes the trajectory of your family because you're not carrying the baggage of the past. You've confessed it so God can sever that thing and it can be a testimony but not the baggage and the weight that you're carrying on your shoulders. I confess our sins to you, oh God. Now, some of you guys, this is just for the really, really hyper, over-the-top lovers of Jesus that when you hear something like this, you wanna start confessing every little thing that you do all the time. I can't believe I had that thought. I can't believe I did this. I can't believe I did that. And I would just say, don't live with that religious spirit on your heart and on your mind. The Lord will be very kind to illuminate to you the things that you need to actually confess. There could be some secrets that you have right now

that the Holy Spirit is even talking to you about now. It's not for Instagram. It's not for TikTok. This is for your spouse. Or your best friend. Or your connect group leader. Or a mentor in your life. For you to go and say, I feel like I've actually been holding on to this and I have this unconfessed thing in my life. And when you confess it, the confession is not the thing that saves you. Jesus saves. The confession, though, helps you acknowledge this is there. And when you acknowledge it, man, there's a severing that can happen there. And you can walk in the freedom that you've been looking for. I actually think this is one of the things that is holding a bunch of us back. That we have some things that we're keeping hidden and God is like, I'd like to deal with that. You don't have to run. We're gonna be a people that confess. So keep on going here. Go to verse number eight so I can get ready to shut this party down. Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses. This is one other aspect of prayer

that I wanna make sure I show everyone. We got adoration, we got intercession, we've got confession. And now look at this. Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, if you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations. But if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my name. What he does here in his prayer is he uses and he leverages is the wrong word, but utilizes the word of God in his prayer. This is why we want you in your Bible. So that you understand what God's will is. So that we can actually pray his will and his word. So when you come in prayer, you don't have to guess. You can know, hey, by his stripes we are healed. Or you can know there's forgiveness in the blood of Jesus. You can know that chains fall off because we see what Jesus did for the man who was at the tombs, that his chains came off. Jesus, if you did it for that man, then you can do it for my family. You can do it for my mom. You can do it for my cousin. You can do it for my coworker.

If you were able to bring to life that dead situation there, then Lord, I look at your word and I say, would you go ahead and do that in this situation as well? It is not manipulation. It is you and I standing on the word of God, not saying, God, if you don't do this, then I'm leaving. No, no, no, no. We are his sons and his daughters, and we are coming boldly to the throne of grace to find mercy and grace to help in our time of need. And I want us to be a people that do not pray prayers that are fearful and insecure and like we don't have a loving father. I want us to pray prayers like our father is inviting us in. It is crazy to me how my kids walk into my office. It's almost like they don't even knock. Come right on in. Hey, dad, I need, I'm like, you better say hi. Can you at least acknowledge my presence first here before you ask me for something? But because I'm their father. They know I can just walk in here and I can share my needs because you're my father. I need you to understand that God does not have the doors locked. They're not bolted shut. There aren't chains on the doors. He's not Joe Clark. Come on that's a lean on me reference right there. The chains are off the doors. It is not closed. There's a new and living way. The veil has been torn. Now all of us have access to God. I don't have more access to God than you have to God. We all have the same access to God and now we get to pray according to his word and when we pray according to his word I'm telling you he hears us and God will move and do powerful things. I got to share this verse with you. I got to. I

have to. I have to. James chapter 5 real quick. James chapter 5. James chapter 5 verse number 17. We're gonna be walking through Nehemiah for the rest of the month. Again we're builders. We're builders here so I just want to talk about us being builders because when Nehemiah saw the problem Nehemiah's first response was prayer. It was prayer. It was not complaining. It was not running. It was prayer because why why did Nehemiah do that? Nehemiah understood that prayer had so much power because it was a gift that God gave us. James chapter 5 verse number 17. Elijah was a human being even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. Again he prayed and the heavens gave rain and the earth produced its crops. We are told here that a human being just like us asked God for the impossible. What is prayer? Prayer is a tool given to us by God that helps things move. Now it sounds like a rhyme because I think I was hanging out with KB this past week at the Passion Conference so it came out it came out a little bit as a rhyme but that wasn't on purpose but I want you to grab a hold of this. Prayer is a tool given to us by God to help things move. One of the things that God will help move is your heart. Want your heart to be different? Start praying. Start praying. You'll see your you'll see your heart begin to move. Right now your heart is set on the things of the world. Selfish things, maybe insecure things, maybe pains. Begin to pray. You watch your heart begin to move towards the things of God. Not only will it move a heart it can also move a mountain. Jesus said you can get you can look at a mountain and tell that thing to be thrown into the sea. The power of God is wrapped up in prayer and I'm asking God that he would do something so profound in our church that over these next 21 days of prayer and fasting there would be a revival that takes place deep within our souls. That we would not be content just coming to church and looking cute on Sunday and checking a box but we would be sons and daughters of the Almighty God recognizing that we're partnering with heaven to advance the kingdom of God. That we're builders in this thing and as we begin to see that we will step fully and say God use

my prayers, use my mouth, use my position of power wherever it might be for your glory to rebuild walls in people's lives. For Nehemiah the problem of the walls being torn down was not a problem he even started but it was a problem he felt called to fix. Maybe you didn't start the cancer but you can be a part of it being fixed. You didn't start the educational system being messed up you can be a part of it being fixed. You didn't start racism or sexism but you can be a part of seeing it fixed. You didn't start starvation all around the world but you can be a part of seeing it fixed. What burden might God give you that goes beyond your own walls? Because at the very end of this first chapter of Nehemiah it says this and I love that he asks for this. He says give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man. You want the success and favor of God on your life? Begin to partner with things that God is doing. Care for the people God is caring for and you'll be shocked at the amount of success and favor that are on your life. Because he was asking for these things not just for himself. That's where we've stopped. He was asking these things so he could help others. If we get that Switch in our brain. I think there'll be an open heaven over our lives like we've never known and I think we'll see a revival break out like in a Way that we've never quite been able to comprehend Because God would know we won't keep it to ourselves We're here to give it to the world I'm cup bearer to the king. We'll get into that next week because this stuff is good We're builders everybody. We're builders If you in mind bow your heads for just a moment If you're under the sound of my voice Can bow your heads If you're under the sound of my voice online in the theater here in Dallas and any of our locations and Right now your heart and your life is not surrendered to Jesus Christ
