Well, let's give it up for an amazing time of worship that we just had. That was awesome. Yes, it was so great. Yes, guys. We love you guys. But, so, if you guys want to follow along with the teaching notes, you can find all of that in our Central Church app. But, guys, let's welcome out Pastor Judd as we continue in the Uncomplicated series. All right. All right. Welcome, everybody. Great to have you with us today. I want to say a big shout out to our Central family locations, to Central Summerlin, Central Sunrise Mountain, Central Kingman Aliante. Good to have you guys with us today. Hope you had a good week this week. Have any of you ever had like a travel day where just everything that could go wrong did go wrong? Anybody feel me here? You know what I'm talking about? Man, that was my weakness last week. I spoke in Chicago this last week, and Lori got to be with me. And so, we go to the airport, and we're just, all you want to do is get home, right? You know, when I was younger, I thought travel was cool, right? Now that I've traveled a million miles, all I want to do is be home. Anybody feel that, right?

You just want to get back home. And so, we get to the airport, and there's a storm, and then, you know, as we're kind of right almost there, I see lightning go across the sky, which, come on, travelers, you know what I'm talking about. When you see lightning, you're like, oh, no, oh, no. So, we go in, and of course, all the flights are delayed, and it's delay after delay after delay. And so, nobody's leaving this airport, and so, it's so full, it's like an anthill. There's nowhere to sit. There are people everywhere. I'm having like claustrophobia, you know, just like being there. At one point, I just told Lori I needed a break and just walked away from her. I'm like, I just got to go. I got to go over here and find a place to sit down just for a second on my own. I'll be back, you know. Anyway, we went through multiple delays, four different gate changes, and after six hours, we get on this flight, and we think, okay, we're going to get home tonight. It might be midnight, 1 o'clock a.m., but we're going to get home tonight. Everything's good. The plane takes off. We fly for, I don't know, hour and a half, something like that, and all of a sudden, the flight attendant comes over the intercom and says, is there anybody on the plane who's a medical doctor? Now, come on. If you've flown a lot, you know what that means, right? And you're like, oh, no. I mean, I'm praying for the guy. I'm praying that, you know, he's okay and that he lives and that he's okay all the way home. You know what I'm saying?

Whatever incident's coming, let it happen then. Come on, Lord. Get us home. Anyway, long story short, this goes on and on, and we have to medically divert the flight to Kansas City. So we land in Kansas City, and they bring the wheelchair out. They put the guy in the wheelchair, and they're pushing him down the aisle on the plane. And you know exactly, everybody is thinking the same thing when we look at this guy. Like, on the one hand, I'm glad he's okay, right? On the other hand, he looks perfectly fine. Did we really need to land the plane? I mean, was he going to die, like, right? You know, everybody's thinking the same thing. And I'm like, bro, you ought to, like, cough or something, because you look like you're okay. And right now, we're all like, dude. Anyway, no, we were glad that he made it. He got back, and then the pilots come on the intercom, and they say, well, folks, we've timed out. Which I'm like, you knew you timed out an hour ago. Why did you wait to tell us? Anyway, so we spent the night in Kansas City. Now, they said you can get a hotel voucher, and you know, so it was like pandemonium, man. It was like the moms at Disneyland when they first opened the gate, and everybody's running in. You know, we're all trying to get the voucher to get to the hotel. And I don't know. There was, like, multiple hotels, but the one they put us in looked like the Bates Motel. I mean, I feel like we got the short end of the stick.

You know, at one point, we got up to our room, and I looked in the shower and thought, no, you're going to be dirtier when you come out of there. Don't even think about it. You know what I mean? And then we're starving, right? So we go to try to find something to eat. There's nowhere to eat. There's nothing around this place. And so they have vending machines that only take ones and fives. Who has ones and fives anymore, right? I'm walking around like, I'll give you 20 bucks on my card if you give me a $1 bill right now. You know, like, just get a bag of chips or something, a five. Anyway, it was the whole thing. We go back the next morning to the airport, and now Lori is not on the flight manifest list. Like, somewhere she disappeared. It's this whole thing. We finally get home. I was so thankful. But it was one of those moments where if it could go wrong, it did go wrong, right? And the whole time we're fighting to be grateful because, I mean, we're on a plane. You know, we got home in a day. It didn't take weeks. We didn't have to go on a horse and wagon. And, you know, babies weren't born. between the time we left and the time we got there or anything. But still, there are those moments where it just feels like, even if you're not looking for troubles, troubles will find you.

And troubles are always right around the corner in our lives. And troubles look different for different people. For some of you, maybe trouble looks like trying to apply for a whole bunch of jobs and not hearing anything back from all the applications you sent in. Maybe trouble looks like starting the new college semester and you aren't sure how you're going to get everything paid for to get through the semester. Maybe for some of you, trouble looks like a marriage that's hurting or a relationship that's hurting. Maybe trouble is just navigating. Sometimes you don't know when you're in trouble. Lori and I were at this conference and we were sitting next to each other and the speaker's talking. And they started talking about cell phones and how people are on their cell phones all the time and how they shouldn't be on their cell phones as much. So I elbowed her, mm, that's you. She says, stop. Guy goes on a little more, drops another good point about cell phones. I'm like, mm, number two. She goes, stop. You know I'm not stopping. I'm laughing. Guy goes on, tells a little more, something else about cell phones.

I says, boom, you know, third time. She says, if you do that one more time, we're going to fight right here. OK, I didn't realize we were at the nuclear zone, right? I didn't know trouble was that close. I pulled my elbows in and sat there like a good little boy the rest of the talk. I'm like, OK, I understand. But trouble comes at us from a lot of different angles, from a lot of different spaces, at work, at life, in the world. And you know, even trouble looks like this last couple of weeks one of our heroes, Officer Austin Zaid Abdel-Nabi, who confronted a masked guy walking down the street in the middle of the day with a weapon and ended up giving his life, sacrificing his life for the sake of the community. He died a hero. And we honored him this week at Central Church at our Henderson location. We remembered him. And I want to ask you to pray for his family and that incredible loss. Pray for his wife, Sage, and just continue to ask God to bring comfort and healing for that family after all that they've been through. I want to say a word to our metropolitan and just police department individuals, either active or retired, or family members of, or spouses of. I want you to know that we don't understand what it's like. To carry the burden that you carry on a regular basis

when your spouse, or your son, or your daughter, or you go out the door and go to work and aren't sure exactly what could happen today. But I want you to know we love you. And we're thankful for you. We pray for you. And we do have your back. We do have your back. I'm so proud of our team. Our staff, our amazing volunteers that did such an incredible job honoring this officer this past week. And particularly, I want to say a shout out to Pastor Michael Kitchen and Pastor Nick Bodine, who led the service and just did a really remarkable job. I was so proud of them. We as a church, our heart is to be here for the community. And they know that. But all of our first responders, police, fire, medical, we're here to serve. Our building is always open. We're here to be a resource to the community. That's our heart. And that's our posture. But trouble can come a lot of different places. And it can come from a lot of different angles. And it can have a huge impact on our lives. And John chapter 14, Jesus is going to give us some insight. He's not going to tell us how to not face trouble, because we all face trouble.

But he's going to talk to us about how we can keep our hearts uplifted, even when there's trouble going on all around us. In John chapter 14, Jesus is in what's called his final discourse. He's walking with his disciples. It's right before he's betrayed and crucified. Trouble is coming, a lot of trouble. And so he's encouraging his disciples. He's challenging them. He's giving them a word. And when we get to John chapter 14, beginning of verse 1, this is what Jesus says. Help me out when we get to the red word here. It's just how we make sure everybody's awake. But Jesus says, don't let your hearts be troubled. What? Trust in God. Trust in God. And trust also in me. Now, Jesus isn't saying that you won't face trouble. He's assuming you're going to face troubles. And later, as we'll see, at one point, he says, in the middle of the night, he says, In this world, you will face trouble. don't let your hearts be troubled. You'll face trials and sorrows. Don't let your hearts be troubled. You're going to face trouble. Don't let your hearts be troubled.

Don't let your hearts be troubled. You will face difficulty. Don't let your hearts be troubled. You will face hardship. You may have to square off with evil in your life. But even in the process, he says, don't let your hearts be troubled. In other words, between what happens to you, there is this amazing thing where you can choose how you will deal with it in your life. And so Jesus is saying there is a way in the midst of trouble to not let your troubles bury you. There is a way to not let that trouble destroy you. He says, don't let your hearts be troubled. And the path is this. Trust in God, very simply, and trust also in me. In other words, the solution to a troubled heart is a trustworthy God. The solution to a troubled heart is a trustworthy God. So if your heart's troubled, if you're carrying some weight today, here's a couple words of encouragement for you. And the first is this, to believe that God is good. Believe that God is good. I saw this, sometimes people let us down, and I saw this amazing review this lady did of the Outback Steakhouse. Check this out. Here's what she said. She said, I am absolutely livid.

My husband drove all the way to pick up our Outback order, and you people forgot the Bloomin' Onion. That was the only thing I wanted. You people, come on, man. Two stars, but look at this. This is why this post went, it went viral. She says, she had to post again. She says, my fat husband ate the Bloomin' Onion in the car and lied. I am sorry, I don't know how to delete reviews. I mean, the husband's like, I'm gonna have a snack. Classic, right? People will let you down, people will disappoint you, but Jesus is reminding us that God is not like other people, that we can trust Him, that we can lean into Him. I mean, this Diana in this review is having a trust crisis with her husband. Sometimes we can feel like we're having a trust crisis with God, but Jesus is teaching us that God is faithful, not only in this lifetime, but in the lifetime to come. Look at what He says, John chapter 14, the very next sentence. He says, there is more than enough room in my father's home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, what does He say? I will come and get you. I'll come and get you so that you will always be with me where I am.

Jesus is shifting their hope. Yes, in life, you're gonna face trouble, but don't let that trouble bury you. Don't let your heart be troubled. Why? Because there's more to life than what meets the eye. And He says, I'm going to prepare a place for you. And that place, ultimately, when it is ready, I will come and bring you with me so that we are there together. In other words, He's saying, I'm not gonna abandon you, I'm not gonna leave you. Yeah, you're gonna face trouble, but trouble isn't the final word. And one of the things when we face trouble, I think sometimes we feel like maybe God's abandoned us, maybe He's turned His back on us. Maybe we just don't know what in the world's going on in our lives spiritually. But in your most confused, remember who God is. Remember His character. I had a professor once when I was training to be a pastor. And amazing professor, he had waited until he was strongly middle-aged, like in his, I think, 40s, before he had ever fallen in love and married. And he married this amazing woman, and they're this incredible couple. One day, they're walking in the airport, and she has a brain hemorrhage and dies.

No warning, nothing. And he talked about how he survived the coming months and the coming years. And he said, people sent me all kinds of scriptures, they sent me cards, they said all the right things. Some of them had all the right Christian cliches and all of that. And he said, none of that really moved me. He said, I appreciated their gestures, but it wasn't what got me through. He said, the thing that got me through at the end of the day is that I believed at the core of who I am that God is good. Even when I don't understand. And because I believe God is good, I was able to keep going until God healed me and put me back together. Exodus chapter 34 is an amazing chapter of the Bible. And in verse six, we read what is known as the most quoted Bible verse. Bible in the Old Testament of the Old Testament. In other words, it's the most quoted or alluded to scripture throughout the Old Testament, again and again and again. And it's where God tells us who he is, in his own words. Like not somebody else writing about God, not somebody, it's like God himself speaking to Moses, tells Moses, this is my character, this is who I am. Let's look at it today, because if we're gonna believe God is good,

it's important, I think, for us to just pause and look at this scripture. Exodus chapter 34, beginning in verse six. It says this, it says, the Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out, Yahweh, the Lord, the God of compassion and mercy. I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. Now, what's so cool about this? Think about this, y'all. This is God, second book of the Bible, Exodus chapter 34, early on, introducing himself in his own words. Like, you know, if you were to say, like, hey, I'm so, I'm Bob, you know, and this is my name, you know, like, you're introducing yourself, and you're gonna describe yourself. God says, Moses, this is who I am, the God of compassion. Now, that's fascinating, because all the Near Eastern gods at the time were all about power, and they were all about might, and they were all about strength. And the first thing the true God of Israel says to Moses is, I'm compassionate. That means, literally, to suffer with. In other words, God's coming along, and he's like, I don't need to flex. I got all the power in the world. Come on, somebody.

I don't need to come and be like, ooh, I'm big, I'm bad. We all know I can squash you like a fly, Moses. What I want you to know about me is this. I'm compassionate. The first characteristic God gave. Now, when you think of the God you love, and serve, and you worship, does the very first word that comes to your mind, is it the word compassion? Because it ought to be. Because it's the actual first word God himself used when he introduced himself, the God of compassion. Not only that, the God of compassion and what? And mercy. It could also be translated favor. It gets to this idea of undeserved grace, and kindness, and favor. In other words, God is predisposed to do better for you than you deserve. He's predisposed to treat you better than you deserve. He's a good God. He's filled with compassion and with mercy. Then he says this. He says, I am slow to anger. In other words, he's patient. And I love that phrase, slow to anger, because in the original Hebrew, it literally says this. I am long of nose. Come on, Pinocchio fans. Now, Pinocchio, when he lied, his nose got longer.

But in the Hebrew language, at that time, like a hot nose, a red face would imply a hot temper, right, when you're angry, when you're mad. Anybody been, anybody ever had your wife so mad at you, it's like she's breathing fire? I about pushed that button at this conference this last week, so I about found out what that was about. But you know, like the nostrils flare, the face gets red, and you're just, you're just, you're mad. God says, you wanna know who I am, my character? I'm long of nose, slow to anger. And aren't you glad that God is slow to anger? Aren't you glad he's kind and compassionate? Then it says, filled with unfailing love, unfailing love, loyal love. This is kind of a unique word connection in the Hebrew language of the Old Testament. It's this idea that God is gonna be predisposed to show love and kindness to you, it's an unfailing love. And then he says, faithfulness. In other words, God doesn't, he doesn't fail, he isn't, he won't lie, he's not gonna back down on his promise, he's gonna keep his word. And so when you're in the midst of trouble, that's normal. But don't let your heart be buried by the trouble, why? Because you have a good God, and he's not finished yet. He's compassionate, he's filled with favor towards you, he has patience, his love is loyal, and he is faithful in your life. And sometimes that's all you have to hold on to.

And I can tell you, friends, that is enough. That is enough. You have a trustworthy God. And that means every day we get to take our concerns and our challenges and our troubles to God, and we get to let him help us shoulder those things. Can I tell you, I've learned a lot about prayer this last year, I think I've prayed more, I know I've prayed more in the last year of my life than any other year of my entire life. And one of the things I've realized is, prayer is so incredibly powerful to just take the weight off your shoulders. Some of you are carrying the weight of the world. Some of you walk into church and you're just stooped down. You're just carrying this weight. And friends, I want you to know, you don't have to carry that weight alone. What I've found in my life and what I've learned even more powerfully this year is if I'll just get out, go for a walk, and just bring all my troubles to God, and I want you to know, Central Family, when I pray, every single day, I pray for you. And I mean that. I pray for you every single day. I pray for your families. I pray that God blesses you. I pray that He protects you. I know that I'm called as the shepherd of this congregation

and I have an amazing team behind me who also shepherd this congregation, but I own that calling, right? I cry out to God for you. I hope He blesses you and protects you and blesses your life and works in your life. I give my troubles to God. You're like, well, you're a pastor judge. You don't have troubles. Go talk to my wife after service. I am trouble. What are you talking about? I got troubles and I am trouble. I bring them to God. I pray for wisdom and insight and His grace and His help and His favor. Sometimes when you're in a situation that's really hard, you can wonder like, God, have you forgotten me? It's a prayer you see a lot in the Psalms, like don't forget me, Lord. Don't forget me. And I can tell you that prayer has been very powerful for me this year of just crying out to God, like, don't forget me. I'm out here. We're out here, right? That's how you feel when you're carrying troubles, yours or someone else's. But you know what I've found is at the end of that prayer time,

I'm like doing so much better. It's like, I'm standing up straight. I'm just like, it's not so much like I got this. It's like, God's got this. I'm not alone in this. I gave Him my troubles. The challenge for me just being completely, I wish I had greater faith. I wish I could do that. And then I was good. But usually somewhere within 24 hours, I feel the weight of all those troubles again. And what I've done in my life in a more disciplined way that's been so powerful is I just take all those troubles 24 hours later and I do the same thing again. I go back to God and I give Him all those troubles again. And then the next day I got to do it again. I give Him all those troubles again. And guess what? The next day, three of those troubles no longer trouble me, but I got four new ones, right? Come on, somebody. So I give Him all those new troubles too. And then I got friends in the church facing health crises and personal crises and job crises. And I give Him all your troubles as well. And I give Him our church troubles. And I give it like, I just put it on His shoulders. It doesn't take me out of the trouble, but it helps me, as Jesus says,

not to let my heart be so troubled, right? Trust in God, He says. Trust also in me. Believe that God is good. What you believe about God is so important because it changes how you experience trouble, right? Like I believe God is good even when life is not. I believe that through faith in Jesus, your troubles don't have to define you. Your problems are not the end of your story. You're loved by a compassionate God. He has favor on you. His face is turned towards you. He is patient and will finish the work that He began in you. Listen, He loves you even when you fail, even when you don't measure up. Nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus, not death or life, not angels or demons, not the threats of today or the fears of tomorrow. I believe God is faithful. I believe He is true to His promise. I believe He doesn't lie. I believe He does not change. I believe He will not fail. I believe He cannot lose. He will never leave or abandon you. And one of day, He will make all things new. The solution to the troubled heart is a trustworthy God. And when you're in troubles, believe that God is good. My second idea is simple, and it's like this,

and believe God's got you. Believe God's got you. You ever have a friend that's chronically late? Who are my people that you know somebody that's chronically late? You may be sitting beside them, so you might be kind of scared. Have you ever noticed that when they text you things about showing up, what they mean and what you understand them to mean may not be exactly synced up? For instance, when a friend of mine's chronically late and they text, leaving now, that means I just got out of the shower, right? You know what I'm saying? Or they text, I'm almost there. What does that mean? I'm in the car, right? And then they'll text you like, I'm here, which usually means I can see it from the freeway, right? I'm basically there. I'm almost there. But Jesus is reminding us that when it comes to God and who he is. There's not this gap between what we may hear and what we expect, that he will move on our behalf. Look at what Jesus says in John chapter 16, just a little bit later in this section of the Bible known as the final discourse. Beginning of verse 33, he says,

"'I've told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows, but take heart because I have," what? "'Overcome the world.'" Jesus is saying, you're gonna face trouble, but I have overcome it. I have overcome the world and we can live in that hope. Jesus says, trust in God, trust also in me. You know, years ago I got on this big study kick for a year and I just wanted to know more about the promises of God. What were the actual promises that God made? Now, depending on what scholar you read or look at, there's different opinions on what constitutes a promise and you know, and not, but some scholars estimate that there are up to 7,500 promises in the Bible. That's a lot. So I boiled them down to like eight and I wrote a whole book about it. You're welcome. Just trying to summarize it. This was years ago. It's called Uncaged. And these were like the promises that like meant the most to me. They like carried me through. And I just spent a year personally studying, leaning in and then I stood back even more and I thought, you know, what if I reduced it to three? Just three groupings that sort of encompass all of the promises that God makes to us in the Bible.

And I want to share that with you because this is how I would group it into three. The first would simply be this. The first promise is that God is with you. That God is with you. It's the most often mentioned promise in the Bible that no matter what you face, God will be with you. That no matter what you go through, that he's beside you. That no matter who lets you down or what you lose or where you end up, God will not abandon you. That he's present to protect. He's present to provide. He's present to save. He's present to love, to forgive. He doesn't leave or abandon his people. I call this the promise of the presence of God. That God is with you. Right? The second grouping of promises, I would just put this way, that God is within you. God also promises to send his Holy Spirit to fill us and to change us from the inside out. And the Spirit strengthens us when we feel weak. The Spirit teaches us the ways of God. The Spirit guides us and grows us and unites us. The Spirit gives us gifts that we can use to serve others. The Spirit is our counselor and our comforter and our defender. And the Bible says where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

The fruit of the Spirit is love and joy and peace. And so he sent the Spirit to dwell in the hearts of those who believe. God is with you. God is within you through his Holy Spirit. And the third is simply this, God is ahead of you. God is ahead of you. Of course, in this life, but also in the life to come, the promise of eternal life, Jesus came to defeat death and he succeeded. He came to seek and save the lost and bring us all back into God's care. He came to give us life as a sacrifice and he rose again so that we can rise again. He walked on earth for a while so that we could walk with God forever. And so, God's got you. And if you're in the trouble right now, remember, God's with you. He hasn't abandoned you. Remember, he's within you. His Spirit is there to comfort and guide if you will lean on him. And he's already ahead of you. He's got this. And walk in his promises and trust him. And we have a powerful opportunity coming up in a few weeks to help you do that. I'm so excited about this. This last year, we went through a study

as a church staff and volunteer team called Rooted. And this study I felt like was so powerful for me personally. It helped me walk closer with God. It helped me understand not only who God was better in my own life, but get connected to people, go deeper with like our staff. I mean, I had guys that like I was meeting with that I had known for 20 years and they were telling me things about like their personal story. And I'm like, I didn't know that. How could I never know that? You know, it was amazing. It brought us closer together. It connected us. It was so powerful. And we went through it because we've been laying the groundwork for all of last year to take our church through it in a significant way. And so Rooted is a 10 week community group study. It's gonna be starting right around the corner, September 16th, that's a Wednesday at 6.30. And I wanna encourage you, lock that in, get some information. Sign up. It's gonna be an amazing time. Listen, if you feel like I don't really know a lot of people in the church Or I don't feel like I have good friends right now in my life or I need to know God more deeply or intimately I need to grow more spiritually This is my best answer for you going into this fall as a way that just by stepping into the rooted experience

You can meet some people grow in your faith connect with God Look, you got to really know the promises of God to hold on to the promises of God God is good and you may agree with that But the more you know who he is through the way he's revealed himself in his word the more you're gonna be willing to lean in and hang on to him when things are hard and Difficult and if you've been walking into church lately thinking man, I just I don't know anybody really I'm not connected to anybody Really like sign up for a rooted group. I said it a couple weeks ago I'm like, hey, I was talking to somebody and they're like, you know, John like I don't really feel connected I don't really feel like I know anybody. I'm like, okay great Tell me when you get to church and they're kind of paused for a minute and they said well late Okay, I got that and I said and then tell me when you leave and they're like early and I'm like you do not leave When I'm praying for people right and they're like, well, I'm like don't do that And I just said to them if you come early if you come late and you leave early Then of course, you don't feel connected to people and you know whose responsibility that is yours Hang out a while come a few minutes early Jump into a rooted group get connected to somebody what you're gonna find really fast is man You're gonna grow in your spiritual faith. The church is gonna get a lot smaller a lot faster You're gonna meet some people you might even end up making a really great friend that lasts long after this is over But you got to be willing to take that step. So please jump in to a rooted group as we head into it this fall But here's the good news because God loves you He's got you and you will never have to face a struggle alone Because God loves you. He is working on your behalf. Your future is in his hands and he will work all things for good Because God loves you. He will protect you. I believe it. He will defend you He will guide you and at just the right time. He will bless you with what you need Because God loves you. You don't have to worry about what's coming You don't have to fear what others say or do because he is with you and within you and ahead of you You don't have to doubt your salvation. You don't have to to know all the answers. You don't have to get everything just right He will open the doors that need to open He will shut the doors that need to be shut and he will make sure nothing comes between you and your destiny in him

He will love you and mourn with you and run with you and sit with you and fight with you and cheer with you He'll humble you, but he'll bring you back up and all the while he will call you his child and his friend. He loves you He loves you So, yes, you may face trouble But Jesus says don't let your heart be trouble Trust in God He's good. He's got you Trust also in me Maybe you're here today. Maybe you've never crossed that line of faith I want to give you that opportunity just to reach out to God and to trust him in your life today Would all of you bow your heads and close your eyes? If you'd like to become a follower of Jesus You can begin that journey by just repeating this prayer after me either out loud or in your own heart and mind Just say dear God. I thank you for loving me Thank you for sending Jesus into the world. I Believe he died on the cross for my sins. I Believe he rose again Forgive me for my sins Give me the gift of eternal life Help me face the challenges.
