Praise him. God is good and he has been kind to us and it is such a joy to be able to gather with my victory family. If we haven't met before, hey, my name is Dan and I am the Chinese Australian member of the teaching team here at Victory Church and I know there are a lot of new people here and if we haven't met before, I would love, love, love to connect and so I'm going to be hanging out in the foyer at the end of this service and I'd love to give you a high five, a fist bump, an appropriate side hug. I would love, love, love to meet you, learn your name, hear a little bit about your story and so at the end of this gathering, please meet me up there in the foyer. I just love your pastors here. Come on, pastors, Johnson in summer. Wow. I say this all the time. As a gospel ninja, I get to travel around this blue rock God made. Talking about Jesus and I make observations everywhere I go and I can testify to the fact that you'll literally have the most beautiful church on planet earth right here in the corner of Atlanta. Like seriously, a beautiful, aesthetically pleasing, like just way above national averages as far as good lookingness but also the way you worship, the way you lean into the presence of God, the way you receive, the word. This is no small thing to be a part of an amazing, beautiful church. Come put your hands together and thank God for our pastors and our leaders. We love them so much. Well, it is my honor and privilege to continue on in this John series. We are in week 142 and we're going to keep on going. In all seriousness, it's so good to go deep, deep, deep into the Word of God. I'm just believing that a whole bunch of victory family going to leave this series where we finally finish it in 2034 with a PhD in the book of John, which is really a PhD in Jesus Christ. The world is crazy. Uncertainty swirls, floods of fear rise all around but the men and the women of God who have their lives built on the Word of God may be shaken but they will stand. And that's the reason it is imperative for us as a faith community to have seasons of our journey where we go. Come on, deep, deep, deep, deep, deep into a specific portion of Scripture and that's what we have done. And this week we turn the corner and we arrive at John chapter 13. John chapter 13 is a turning point in the book of John. Whereas the first 11 chapters, 12 chapters deal with the earthly ministry of Jesus, ranging about three to three and a half years. At John chapter 13, everything within this story begins to slow down. Whereas John chapters 1 through to 12 deals with this long stretch, the remainder of the book of John deals with but a week. As recorded by Jesus' friend, John, the one who was loved by Jesus, an old man sitting down

recalling beautiful memories that brought lightness to his soul, he would recall detailed, breathtaking, glorious truth that Jesus would reveal in his last week here physically on earth. John chapter 13 begins with a scene. So shocking that decades later as John is writing this down and sharing with the people around, even then people would ask, he did what? He washed what? He washed who? And this was done on purpose for these details were meant to resonate to this day and leave your soul mind. These images were meant to be tattooed on our mind, not allowing us to live John chapter 13 and verse one begins with the scene. It was just before the Passover festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who are in the world, he loved them to the end. Jesus came in love, he served in love, and he went to the cross in love with humanity, in love with you. The evening meal was in progress and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power and he had come from God and was returning to God. So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter who said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." "No," said Peter, "or an American." "No," said Peter. "You shall never wash my feet," Jesus answered, "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." Then Lord Simon Peter replied, "Not just my feet, but my hands and my head as well." Jesus answered those who have had a bath, need only to wash their feet. Their whole body is clean and you are clean, though not every one of you. For he knew who was going to betray him and that was why he said not everyone was clean when he had finished washing their feet. He put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them. "You call me teacher and Lord and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your teacher and Lord, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet."

I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you that no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. What is happening here? As the scene is being set, as the lens over the rest of Jesus' earthly ministry is being placed. As Jesus' gospel story is building to a memorable crescendo, what is Jesus doing here? In the scene, so memorable, so scandalous in many ways. What is Jesus trying to reveal? What is Jesus trying to teach? What is Jesus trying to challenge us with today? I encourage you if you're taking down notes to pull out your leather-bound journals and your pens right now. I always say this, you don't need to take notes to get into heaven. I'm just saying why take a chance. You might get to the end and it might be an open book quiz. Some extra credit. Please don't write that down, that's heresy. But as we study these 17 verses, I beg you, I implore you to not just allow Jesus to whisper to you on a Sunday morning, but to allow the Spirit of God to convict you and to challenge you and to counsel you into how to live differently for his glory. If you have an iPhone or an iPad or a Google device or a Samsung device, pull out your version of a note, write some stuff down because Jesus is teaching much at the beginning of John 13. First and foremost, what is he revealing? He's letting us know that God grants us status for the purpose of service. I love the way Pastor Johnson talks about it all the time. We use our titles as towns. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under His power and that He had come from God and was returning to God. Or in other words, there was a moment where it was clear that yes, this Jesus who was come to earth actually is the preeminent being in the universe.

He is the firstborn over all creation through whom everything was made, for whom everything was made, in whom everything is held together. He's literally got the whole world in His hands at His peak of understanding of His power. What does He do? Verse four, so He got up from the meal, took off His outer clothing and wrapped a towel around His ways. In the moment of clarity regarding Jesus' status, His first response is to ask this question, we are all asked ourselves, what will you do with the status, with the opportunity, with what you are entitled to, with the power you possess, the resources you own, what will you do with this blessing, a portion to you, and will you turn it into service? What Jesus did, at what makes this picture, all the more shocking is the background to this scene. Luke chapter 22 actually gives a different perspective on what was happening right before this meal kicked off. There was an argument going on amongst the disciples. Can you remember what the argument was about? It was who is the greatest? Here is Jesus Christ with His 12 boys. He's taken them on a master's program on how to change the world. Jesus has exemplified servanthood to them for three, four years, and at the end of their studies,

they're still arguing, I'm better than you, now I'm better than you, I did this, well I did that. I'm gonna sit here right next to Jesus while I'm gonna be sitting on His lap. (congregation laughing) So with this as a background, you see a group of young guys who all refused to take their position of servanthood because they felt there was someone else who sat naturally in that role. I am higher, they are lower, they should be serving. And into that situation, Jesus blows up that erroneous, self-centered, narcissistic thinking by leaving quietly, going into the back room, literally stripping down to His undergarments, wrapping a towel around Himself, filling up a bucket of water and coming out to serve His friends. I could've imagined how another argument would've kicked off with the disciples. You see what you did? You're the one, no you're the one. But Jesus, the one who possesses the same hands that flung stars into space would find Himself on His knees, now dissolving the dirt and the dung from between the tours of these young men. He takes the position of a servant, even though he was fully aware of his power, his supremacy and authority. And I want you to consider what was being cleaned here,

the feet, the grossest part of a person's body walking around 2,000 years ago. There weren't many cool, you know, kind of moccasany situations made out of, like, Australian lambskin, you know what I'm saying? Like, only two kinds of footwear back in the day. If you had means, you had sandals, but many were barefoot. And they weren't walking around clean streets. These were dusty roads that were shared with beasts of burden, making a mess. There weren't many, nail salons. Come on, owned by my people. To pedicure, to deal with that angry, like, hang, no, you know, ah, I thought on the other hand. (audience laughing) But Jesus would clean these. I want you to think about whose feet are being cleaned. Come on, these fools who are just, but a few moments ago, arguing about who's the greatest. The pair of feet connected to the man who would betray Jesus with a kiss. Yet Jesus takes his status and he uses it for the purpose of service. He took his title and it turned into a towel. And the reason this has to go deep, deep, deep into our hearts is because we don't live in a day or an age where we are instructed to do so.

In fact, we live in a culture that is the absolute opposite to this picture. Come on, aren't we kinds of people who love to get what we have earned? If we have a certain status, I've got no problem serving others with a greater status, but if you have a lesser status than me, come on, you should be pouring my water. Now, full disclosure, because I'm in the House of God and I can't lie right now, you know what I'm saying? When I fly, I like my status, recognized. I fly a lot. I've chosen the greatest airline on planet Earth, Delta. (audience cheers) And it ain't a flex because it's real. I hold diamond status. While we're talking about flying, let me get a few things off my chest right now. There have been some distinct and profound annoyances that have become way too prevalent in the air since 2020, so first and foremost, just to my friends here, when you are flying, as soon as we land and that seatbelt sign goes off, it is not a race. To show you all the first person can jump out of your seat and grab your bags. Second annoyance, when you do get your bags and you're sitting in road 27, don't start walking down the aisle and jamming up around row three.

Wait for 26 to go and then you're, then, come on. (audience laughs) Another annoyance is when we are boarding, all right? The sweet Delta gate agent is clearly stating that we are gonna board in zone order and your zone number can be located on your boarding pass or your app. And in case you somehow missed it, in elementary school or in high school, the number six comes after, the number one. (audience laughs) And since we're doing a confessional right now, (audience laughs) a couple of weeks ago, I was boarding a flight and all the Delta people, so you know this situation, pre-boarding, God bless 'em, all right? Active and retired people in the military with ID, thank you for your service. And then, bang, it goes pink zone one. (audience laughs) Now I ain't gonna be a guy trying to rush onto the plane. I like to walk with a relatively smooth pace. (audience laughs) But this day, another one of my annoyances, it happened because I'm walking, and a gentleman just walked quicker, (audience laughs) comes alongside me, cuts in front of me, brushes up against me, and I'm saying, okay, sir, have your way. So I'm staying there, just a little annoyed in my heart.

(audience laughs) He scans his boarding pass, and then the gate agent says, "Sorry, sir, it's not your zone yet," way too good about watching him slink away. And because Jesus and Elvis had left the building in that moment, I scanned my boarding pass. The gate agent says, "Thank you so much for your diamond status." And as I walked away. Oh, I do that. And you do that. We feel entitled to things. We feel like we have earned things. We think that we have done our time. It's time for others to do theirs. I don't like pouring water. I like water being poured for me. I don't like opening up doors. I like doors being opened up for me. But if we act in such a manner, by default, we are acting opposite to our friend Jesus. Status is afforded to you for the purpose of service. If you have a spirit of power to move in your life, that power was afforded to you for the purpose of service. If you've been blessed with resource or leverage in your life, it has been afforded to you. Come on for the purpose of service. I get to mentor a group of young men through a Bible study. All of them are connected to Clemson football. It's a college team just up the road. A lot of Georgia fans walking around this morning with their chest out, feeling good about themselves. We're going through a difficult time right now. Just how things turn around. They turn around for Georgia. You did nothing since 1980 and then all of a sudden you're doing stuff. Clemson will experience the same blessing to eventually. One of the great challenges I've had to navigate shepherding young men playing college football is in the last couple of years a lot of money has been injected into college football into their bank accounts. One of the things that I've tried to shepherd them into is how do you take this amazing status you have as football players in an area that's football obsessed. Now you've got all of this money. How do you make sure that as big as you are around campus, as well known as you are in this state. How do you make sure that your life booms servitude the loudest. So I remember having this conversation with a young man. He was a junior last year. He was drafted into the NFL in a very high round this year. We're having this conversation. I'm trying to help him navigate what to do with all this money that's being deposited into his bank account. I'm trying to as a spiritual father try to help him, hey invest and make this money work for you and if you make this money work for you down the track you're going to

be enjoying blessing that a lot of your friends will miss out on. He didn't listen to me. He went out and just bought a truck and not just a normal truck. He bought himself one of those giant ram TRX trucks. Got it lifted, lifted, big wheels put on it. He wrapped it in bright purple. I don't know if he put a sports exhaust on it or just tore the whole exhaust off but when he rolled into church that Sunday I had a conversation with him after that service in the parking lot by his truck and I challenged him what will you do with this blessing that's been afforded to you. Everyone knows who you are around in this area. You're going to see a lot more blessing flow into your life going forward. Now you've got this giant truck. How are you going to serve? And then he asked me if I had a suggestion and my suggestion was simple. When you see your purple truck see a giant yellow school bus and every single time you come to church make sure you never come alone. And the week after he shows up to church and a group of young men from his position group all got out of his truck with him. night game two weeks ago. It was his birthday weekend and he wanted to celebrate his birthday back in the upstate of South Carolina where I live. And so he flew back on the Friday. His truck has not been transported to Buffalo yet. So we have dinner on that Friday night and I'm loving on him and I'm encouraging him. I'm telling him that I'm proud of him but I was challenging him. With all the blessing that will come your way in this long career that I hope you have, make sure you always take the position of a servant. So I happen to be preaching at my home church there in South Carolina that Sunday. He didn't even tell me he was going to show up. I didn't know when he was going to fly back to Buffalo. But sure enough, I'm out the front before the 11-15 service greeting and here this purple truck pulls up and my young man jumps out and he had three freshmen in the car with him. Whatever you have been blessed with has been a portion to you for a reason. It's for the purpose of service. Come on, I speak to the men in this room, honored and respected in your household. It is incumbent on us to put on the hat of servant first and foremost. Come on, I speak to the business owners and the community leaders here in this room recognized and applauded. You have been given power. Come on for the purpose of service. Jesus did it. Will you? So first and foremost, this lens is set once and for all. A precedent is presented. If you have any status, blessing, opportunity, leverage in your life, it's

been given to you for the purpose of service. And the second thing that is happening here is Jesus is revealing the glorious gospel. They didn't get it. What's happening here is Jesus led us, let us know that Jesus saves through service and went over their heads of most of the disciples as he is washing feet. Finally comes to Peter and Peter starts arguing with Jesus. You ain't never going to wash my feet. And then Jesus makes this statement in verse seven. Jesus replied, "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." "No," said Peter. "You shall never wash my feet." And Jesus answered. "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." What's happening here? Jesus is not only establishing a precedent regarding how we are to treat one another. He is also revealing the only way an unrighteous, broken person who is stained with sin can be made right whole and righteous before a holy and righteous God. It is the washing that comes from Jesus that makes us right. Which railed against the teaching of the day. It was the 10 commandments that you kept. It was the 621 moral laws that you observed. It's the way that you ate and the way that you worshipped is the things that you did that made you right with God. But Jesus would show up and let you know. You know what? You tried to wash away your own stains, but your good works could never fully achieve that mission. Because how can you clean a filthy soul with soiled hands? Only one thing can get out this stain and it's the blood of Jesus. I always make it a point to wear dark shirts when I visit victory because I like hugging people, but you're like makeup. I've told this story before a couple of years ago, I was here preaching at victory. I lived two hours up the road, up 85 and I'm hugging people all day long and I got home at the end of the day and there was a fake eyelash on my collar. I hugged my wife. She pulls, I thought it was like some weird insect. It was a fake eyelash. I get marked up with Rouge and mascara and foundation. So I come prepared. I wear me a dark shirt. (audience laughing) But I'm blessed that I've got a wife who knows how to get out of every state. (congregation laughing) Sometimes I'm on the road and I'll have a grease stain, I'll call her up.

Babe, I've got, well, for grease you need this. Hey babe, I spoke ketchup on my shirt. For ketchup you need this. But babe, I've got some lipstick on my, how'd you get lipstick on the hair there? (congregation laughing) Can anyone grateful they got someone in their life, maybe a mother or who knows how to get out every stain? Let me ask you this question. What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. Nothing could wash away that which separated you from God, but it was the washing of Jesus as he shed his blood that brought you back into the family. And he's revealing it here in this foot washing. You could not do it in your own holiness or strength. So Jesus would have to hang on across. His side would be pierced. Blood would flow that would turn you white as snow. What can wash away your sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. And that's what he's revealing here in this text. (congregation laughing) Status is afforded to you for the purpose of service. In this church we take every title and we do like our friend Jesus and we turn it into a towel. The gospel is revealed. You need some washing. But the only way you get washed

is by the blood of Jesus. And the great news is as clear as a foreign ringing in a quiet room. (congregation laughing) It's as powerful as his blood was then. So it is now and this ringing will not stop until you finally relent. And you surrender your heart to him. Thirdly and lastly. Thirdly and lastly, what's happening here? We are most like Jesus when we are found serving. Look at that in verse 13. You call me teacher and Lord and rightly so. Come on, anyone here grateful for that Jesus as a teacher? Come on, anyone here call him Lord. Come on, is anyone grateful that he's your savior? Come on, has Jesus taught you anything? Has Jesus forgiven someone in this room? Has Jesus brought a healing into your life? Has Jesus pushed back the darkness for anyone? Well, he has done so because that's who he is. Now that I, your teacher and Lord, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I've set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I set you an example. I'm gonna show you how to do this and now you're going to know what to do when you ask the question.

What's it like to be like Jesus? I set you an example. There's a framework. This is how Jesus judges the authenticity of any Jesus community. It's not the songs that we sing. It's not the Bible verses we can quote. All of these things are beautiful. It's not these eloquent prayers that we pray or these signs and wonders we perform. All needed. But the primary example set here at the beginning of the 13th chapter of John is simply one who understood that life comes from serving. So he did and so should we. How great would it be if victory became famous? Come on for the way we served one another. I'm telling you. You got two of the greatest pastors on planet Earth, but pastors, Johnson and Summer, weren't meant to be the most famous thing about this church. Come on, you got worship here, world class. But your worship shouldn't be the most famous thing here. You are the most comfortable building. Man, I was brought up in a little church. We had wooden seats, hard wooden seats. I can still remember the church meeting where we were gathered, I was a small church about 100 people and someone put their hand up and they said, can we buy some cushions for the seats?

And somebody put their hand up and said, did Jesus have a cushion on his wooden cross? (audience laughing) So, we went back to the wooden seat. (audience laughing) You all got some comfortable seats. But how comfortable a place this is should not be the most famous thing about us. This should be a glorious surface every single time you walk in through the doors. What would it look like if we all showed up every single week with the biggest question in our head and our heart? How can I serve the people around me? Some of us come in, come on with different thoughts. I hope we stick the time today, I've got lunch plans. I hope the sermon is funny today, I pay more attention when I laugh. Man, I wonder what we're gonna be singing in the worship today. Man, I've been humming that, God, I'm just a grateful song all week. I hope you sing that song. Man, we didn't get to sing that song. Maybe the reason some of y'all haven't really got much out of church for the longest time is because you have misinterpreted what this was meant to be. I get to serve at a great church in South Carolina, but I get emails all the time. I just feel like we're not doing enough of this,

I just feel like he needs to be doing this, and I just kind of like the way that you phrase that. And I want, I can't do it because it's gonna mean more emails. But I wish I could just say, the reason you're not enjoying church is because you thought it was about you. It's the way we serve, and you can't send that email. 'Cause now they're gonna just email back, and then you've got to have a meeting, and you've got to act nice, and I'll cut it. Your best experience as a part of the family of God will be found at the other end of serving the family of God. So this is how we serve, we walk up in here, and first of all, we have volunteers everywhere. Come put your hands together for all of our volunteers that were here this morning, directing our traffic. (audience clapping) Please just see, join that team. I guarantee you talk to a volunteer, they don't do it because they have an arm twisted behind their back, or they think somehow it's earning them credit in heaven. No, they do it 'cause they love it. They found, wow, it's so cool to be a part of the serving team. Maybe your one step is to, at the end of this gathering, go out to our one step desk. It's more like a one step area. And maybe, hey, you know what?

I wanna try it. Where can I serve? Come on, walk in here on a Sunday morning and put a giant smile on your face. That's serving the people around you. Because you don't know what kind of week that person has gone through that you're going to see in the foyer, but your smile is gonna cause them to smile. And as they're smiling, beautiful hormones are being released in their brain, they're gonna have them be sensitive to the presence of the Holy Spirit. And before you know it, you've turned a whole week around, just because you serve people with a smile. I think we should be a place that interacted with fist bumps and high fives and very appropriate side hugs. 'Cause it serves one another. I think we serve one another by the way that we worship. When we worship with the mentality that this is not only me touching God, but it's me being a testimony of what God has done in my life. And this testimony is being seen and heard and felt by people all around me. There are so many ways that we can serve week in week. This is meant to be a serve fest. And your greatest experience of church will be found on the other side of being like Jesus.

Serve one another. [MUSIC PLAYING] I only do this so I can get to a foyer because even last night, I got to have a couple of significant conversations that were with me as I sat in my hotel room last night. What an honor it is. Come on to serve. That's a good amen to that. Okay so my time is done. The keyboards are playing. That's preacher talk for, put away your tray tables and bring your seats back to an upright position. Our status is afforded to us for the purpose of service. If you've been given anything, it's been given to you to be used unto the glory of God to help someone else. The only way that we can come into relationship with God was through Jesus' service. The glorious gospel here revealed. And if you really want to appreciate what church was meant to be, serve one another. I had a very salient, clarifying moment a couple of weeks back. As a family, we have been believing and praying for green cards for seven years. And then after 2,319 days of prayer about two months ago, we get a letter in the mail that said, "Welcome to the United States of America." Since you are now a lawful permanent resident, I'm kind of like you. I'm not allowed to vote, but I can be drafted into the army. That's the only kind of stipulation. Now after that, our lawyers reached out and said, "It would be good for you to come in and have a conversation about estate planning," because now you are a lawful permanent resident. There are some laws connected to what you own that are different now. You're here permanently. So my wife and I went in and we had a meeting with our lawyer and we talked about our estate planning wills, writing a will.

And it is a very sobering moment when you reflect upon what you have and where things will be left. What was especially sobering is that we had to work out our net worth. And so we had to supply some documentation. There was a formula, our assets, our savings. So the lawyer presented to us our net worth, and I'm like, "Is that all? Can you do the math again?" But as I said, they're looking at that measly figure. I couldn't help but think, "That's not my net worth." Because even though the world would determine your net worth by what you got, the kingdom determines net worth by what you gave. That number was just a calculation of what we stored up up to this point. No, the kingdom of God says, "The weight of your life is measured by the way you served." That's the reason I love coming to Victory Church because there's a whole bunch of rich people in this room. I love the way you serve by the grace of God. May this just be the beginning. Come on, thank God for the church that we're becoming. You might even want to serve someone in the next hour as you're thinking about someone who hasn't been at church for a while. Over them by sending them a text, let them know there's a big, chunky, Asian, Australian guy dressed like a Japanese samurai who's got a word. Come on, serve. Come on, serve. We got rally with hundreds of teenagers. [MUSIC PLAYING] but you've stepped out for it. You get back into serving our young people. I'm telling you now, do not complain about the next generation

unless you're willing to roll up your sleeves and say, "Young man, let me teach you." About how to spend your money, so you're bored of truck, okay? Well. (audience laughing) Serve. Can someone say a good amen to that? You know, our time is done. Hugfest begins in three and a half minutes. (audience laughing) I wanna do two things before we finish up this portion of our worship. First and foremost, I wanna encourage everyone just to close your eyes but to open up your heart right now. And I wanna ask you a simple question. Is Jesus Christ your Lord and your Savior this very moment? That's what Christianity is. It is not about cleaning yourself up. It's not about getting your own sins together. It's about recognizing that God loves you and came to find you exactly where you are. That's the reason over the last 36 minutes, you have felt him knocking at your heart's door. Stop ignoring it. Stop hiding. Open up that door. Come on and make him king. So if you heard that knock at your heart's door,

would you allow me to lead you in a prayer? That heaven will hear. So with every eye closed, but every heart open, if you're saying, I wanna make Jesus Christ my king, I wanna come into his family. When I count to three, would you lift your hand where you are? Are you ready? If you heard that knock, when I count to three, would you lift your hand? Here we go. One, two, three. Just lift your hand where you are. And with your hand lifted, I want you to pray this out loud after me. We'll do it all together as an act of love and support. Let's pray together, dear Jesus, I surrender my life to you. Thank you for serving me, for carrying my sin, for carrying my shame, for taking it to the cross. I believe you rose again. You live today. You live in me. Help me by your spirit. Live for your glory. Amen.

Come on, can you put your hands together for all the people who lifted theirs? Wow. I would especially like to meet you if you lifted your hand. So at the end of this service, I'll be up there in the foyer.
