And I have some scripture for you. And it may not be encouraging scripture when you first hear it, but I promise you it's encouraging. It's from Romans eight. We're going to verse seven. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. You're saying, well, so why are you reading that verse? I'm saying because when you are fasting and you're on this prayer journey with us, you are choosing to die to your flesh and instead please God. And I believe through that, through this journey of prayer and fasting, is why we do this. God rewards us. He speaks new life in us. He gives us the word. And I just want to encourage you to jump in wherever you're at, whether you've been with us the whole time or right now.

Get on the journey of prayer and fasting, because it's all about dying to our flesh and looking to Jesus. And that's what we're going to do this morning as we continue in our series. So let's get ready and worship together. Good morning church. We are so glad that you're here today in the house of the Lord. two baptisms this morning because we have a holy God that left heaven to dwell with creation. Come on. And so first up, I got my man Andrew here and Andrew is nine years old. And while we're sitting in the back, I said, Andrew, tell me how we got here. Tell me why you're here to be baptized this morning. And he looked at me and he said, I want everyone to know that I have completely given my life to Jesus and I'm not sorry about it. So come on, Andrew. Have a seat right there for me, buddy. Turn your feet here. Cover that nose. It's a privilege to baptize you, my brother, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, buried with Christ in death, and raised to walk a new life. Come on. And then next up, I got my man Jawan. And I wish you guys, I wish you could understand, I wish you could see the full circle moment. If you know me, you know I love a full circle moment. Come on, bud. But this one's special to me. So I'm so excited. But I was in the back asking Jawan, like how did we get here? And he said, man, I'm just ready.

I'm ready to let everybody know that I've surrendered my life to Jesus and that he's the king of my life. God's done such amazing things through Kids Week and Jawan's life is one of those things. So brother, plug your nose for me. It's a privilege to baptize you, my brother, in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, buried with Christ in death, and raised to walk a new life. Come on. Let's keep worshiping God this morning. Proud of you. Come on, you can do better than that. Church, give Jesus the highest praise. Oh, we love you, Lord. We love you, Lord. I'm just so excited about what God's doing in people's lives, and I wish you could've heard the other testimonies that were given this morning. Just unbelievable testimony. testimonies of how God's changing people's lives. And this might be your very first service with us ever. And if it's your first service, I just wanna tell you, welcome home. When you look around this room, you see people shouting, praising the Lord. You see people dancing, or you see people clapping. When you see every single face,

every one of us have a story of how Jesus has touched us and changed us. And when you meet Jesus, you're never the same. You're never the same. He changes everything. He gives hope. He gives purpose. He gives meaning. I was talking to one of our students at student camp last month, and he said, you know, I mean, Daniel, I grew up in church, so there's never really a moment that everything needed to change, because I've just always been around God. And the Lord just gave me a word to speak directly into his life, and I'm so thankful that he was able to receive it. I said, hey, even if you grow in church, there is a big difference between being around the things of God, between being in church every Sunday, going about religious activity. There's a big difference in that and experiencing Jesus for yourself. Can I tell you, if you've never had a moment where Jesus has changed you, you need a moment that changes everything. And all morning, you might be unaware of it, there's been people walking this room praying for every person that's gonna be in every seat.

We've been praying for you, that Jesus would meet you right where you're at, that Jesus would open your eyes to the reality of what he wants to do in your life, that this morning you'd have a radical experience with the truth of who God is and be forever changed by him. I'm just warning you, we've been at this a few hours this morning, and God's been at work. Just unbelievable what we've already seen God do this morning, and I don't want you to miss what God has for you. Will you give somebody a high-five, a handshake, tell them you're glad to see them at church this morning? You can be seated. You can be seated. I want you to prepare yourself. God has such a clear word that he wants to speak to you this hour, and I just want you to be prepared to receive what the Lord has for you. Maybe you're here this morning, you came with a family member, a friend, you were invited by somebody else. You don't even know if you believe all this. And I just want you to ask God right now, if you're real, will you reveal yourself to me? In fact, before we go any further, I want to be able to pray for you. Holy Spirit, we welcome you here. Jesus, be revealed. Make yourself known in this place. I thank you for every person that's here this hour, and I thank you that your word does

not return void. So I'm asking that as pastor preaches, that the truth of your gospel will go forward, that with clarity, every one of us would be able to respond to what you're about to speak to us. And God, I pray for your namesake and your glory, that we would not leave here the same. Do what only you can do, in Jesus' name we pray, everybody said, amen. You can turn your attention to the screen. Well, good morning, Liberty, who's glad to be in church on day eight of 21 Days of Prayer? I want to welcome all the Liberty family and our guests at every location, and those of you who are joining us today online, I want you to know that we have prayed for you. God has shown up in the services we've already had, and I believe God has a word for you today. I always like to give a shout out to military families, missionary families, men and women in the correctional facilities, it's a joy to be able to study the word of God together. Come on every campus, put your hands together and welcome all the family. If you're new to our church, I want you to know we're in the middle of 21 Days of Prayer. And the way it works is 6 a.m. during the week, we meet at our permanent campuses. We always have you out a few minutes before 7. I want you to come and experience it for yourself. Bring the children. You'll see senior adults and children, babies, teenagers, I mean it's just incredible. I just love being a part of a multi-generational, multi-ethnic, multi-site church. We gather together 6 a.m. and then on Saturdays we sleep in, alright? We get together at 9 o'clock, Sundays we meet at the altar at the last song at the end of the service and your campus pastors will be leading through that. So I want you to feel free to come to the altar today and join us in this service. I also want you to know that we have a podcast and the one that we just did, Pastor Daniel talked about breakthroughs that come through fasting. So during our 21 days, people are doing different types of fasting and I encourage you to go to the podcast, listen to it.

It's instructional. It's inspirational. I was blessed by it. I know you'll be blessed by it as well. And the next one that's coming up is called You Asked For It. So we're going to try to answer as many of your questions as possible. We're excited about the vision that God has given us for the next seven years and we're rolling out that vision. We started in January and we're going to have some worship vision nights here at different campuses. So it's going to be full worship like a Sunday morning and then I'll be there and we'll be sharing with you the vision that God's laid on our heart. We're going to do a Friday, Saturday, Sunday in August. It's at Greenbrier at Harborview and Smithfield. And then in September we do the same thing again, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and you see it for York River, Hampton, and Gloucester. Go to your campus worship night and if for some reason you are out of town or there's a conflict, you can't make it to that one, go to one of the others. Even if you've already heard it, I want you to bring someone. Like one person told me they're going to bring their whole small group to the worship vision night and it's going to be great. Well the last thing, and then I'll get to the text. We're going to Israel, God willing, October the 5th through the 14th. I had three people sign up last week. I think we're at about 48 now, that's a great group that's going. But I want to make this announcement because on August the 17th, that is the last day that we have to actually apply names to the tickets, and the tickets were bought a long time ago. So obviously you can still go after August the 17th, but you would have to get your own ticket, which means it's probably going to be higher because of gas prices, okay? So if you have been thinking about it, now is your time. Sign up before August 17th and own, I wrote it down because a short pencil is better than a long memory, amen? All right, we're going to have an information meeting on August 23rd, it's a luncheon. And on that day, Tammy and I will tell you how to pack, what to wear, what to expect, and answer your questions. So I want to get this to you so that you can be praying about it, and like some people that signed up last week, you can make that decision. It is the trip of a lifetime. We can't wait to go back. Well, we're ready to preach. Are y'all ready? All right, the series is Look to Jesus. I want you to take your Bibles, and I encourage you to bring your Bible with you. Mark it up, all right? It's Hebrews chapter 12, and today we're looking at these first three verses, Hebrews chapter 12. If you don't have a copy of God's Word, we do put it on the screen so you'll be able to follow along with us. And we're going to read in verse 1, therefore since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, it's referring back to the men and women of faith that we've just studied in Hebrews 11.

And I said to you that during these 21 days, I hope that you will write out your story, and that you will tell your story, share your story, be a witness, and let people know what Jesus has done in your life. It says we're surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, they encourage us, let us lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us." We're not running somebody else's race, we're running the race that God has set before us. How do you do it? Looking to Jesus. "...the founder, the perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross..." We're going to talk a lot today about the cross. "...despising the shame..." The cross was not a piece of jewelry that you would wear around your neck. No, it wasn't a sign or symbol that you see everywhere. In that day and time, the cross was like the electric chair. It was a symbol of shame. It says, "...he endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God." Let's pray. Father, thank you for what you're going to say to your people today. Give them, I pray, ears to hear what the Spirit says. Holy Spirit, fill me. Let me preach out of the overflow. Take control of my mind and my mouth. And may everything that is said and done exalt Jesus. Draw us unto yourself. And I pray that when the invitation is given, that people will be set free. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there's freedom. And I pray for that kind of liberty and freedom today because of the power that's in the Word. For your glory in Jesus' name, and everyone said, Amen. The title of the message, Throw Off the Sin. Last week we talked about throw off the weight. Weight is a neutral thing. It's not sin. It's not a bad thing. It actually could be a good thing. But good things become bad things when they keep us from the best things. And so we talked about some of those weights last week. Today we're going to talk about sin, and sin is not neutral. If you are going to run your race in faith, then you're going to have to throw off some things in your life that are holding you back. And it's hard to throw off sin in a culture that won't even define sin. It's hard to throw off sin when you can't even identify it. We live in a culture around us that has exchanged the truth for lies. That's why the prophet Isaiah said, Woe to those who call evil good and good evil. Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness. Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. How can you throw off

something that you can't identify? And so today, we're going to let the Bible define sin for us. Don't get mad at me. I didn't write the book. I just deliver it. I'm just the mailman, alright? And the only reason that God identifies it, listen, is because He loves you and He wants to set you free. And so number one, write this down, the start of sin. Where does sin come from? Well the Bible says back in Genesis 1.1, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And when God created everything, it was perfect. There was no sin. No, He created it with beauty and with purpose. And we see even evidence of that today. Even the heavens declare the glory of God. And God said, Let us make mankind in our image and in our likeness. Don't miss the very fact that we see the triune God, the Godhead, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit right here in Genesis 1. So God created mankind in His own image and in the image of God He created them male and female. He created them. He not only created us, but then He said, It is good. God saw all that He had made and it was very, come on, you all can do better than that, very, it was very good. And so in the original state, God's original design, there was no sin. You say then where does sin come from? Why is the world not good when we look all around us today? One word, sin. Sin is what has caused the world to be like it is today. Sickness, disease, hatred, prejudice, war, conflict, all the things that we see around us, pain and ultimately death is because of sin. And that sin did not originally start with Adam. It started with Satan. There was war in heaven. There was a revolt in heaven and the devil, Lucifer, Satan said, I will ascend to the heavens. I will raise my throne above the stars of God. I will sit enthroned. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds. I will make myself like the Most High. And the Bible says that God kicked the devil out and one third of the angels with him. We read that in Revelation 12 and in Ezekiel 28 it says he was cast down to the earth. So he is the prince of this world. Alright? This world system is anti-Christ. And it all started there with this war in heaven. Then the devil who got cast out to this earth came to Eve, seduced her, enticed her to selfishly sin against God. In fact he asked her a question. Did God really say? And the world, listen, the devil still speaks that lie today. Did God really say that's wrong? Did God really say you can't do that? Did God really say that you should do this? And there's always been this attack on God's word. There's always been this attack on what God has said. Now

here it is. Eve sinned and she did so unknowingly. Adam sinned knowingly. And because of that as the head of the human race, listen, the fall of man, the curse of sin came on all of us. The Bible says sin is passed down through the seed of the man. So God held Adam responsible and because of that everybody born after Adam was a sinner. That's the significance of Christmas and the virgin birth. Stay with me. That God could take the form of a man, live a perfect life without sin. Why? The virgin birth. He had no earthly father. And Jesus was the only one virgin born. You weren't. And I wasn't. And so I want you to see here, we're talking about the start of sin, where it came from and why we're living in a world that's full of sin. So Adam chose to sin and because of that now we have inherited sin. We are sinners by nature. We're sinners by birth and we're sinners by choice. And so we say I'm free and I can do anything I want to do. And yet we become enslaved to the choices that we regret. Look at what the Bible says. Romans 5.12. Therefore just as sin entered the world through one man, that's Adam, and death through sin in this way. Death spread to all people because all have sin. And so what the world says is live it up, have a good time, this is pleasure. God says it's death. It's death. And the Bible says all have sin and come short of the glory of God. So this is what I want you to write down. The consequence of sin is separation from God on earth and in eternity. That's what sin has done to us. It's separated us from God. Now Paul wrote in Ephesians 2. Are you awake? Say Amen. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions, your trespasses and sin in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world. So he's writing to the church in Ephesians here and he said this is the way you used to live. You were dead in sin. You're just following the world. And so I want you to understand that you didn't have to do anything to get on the broad road that leads to destruction except be born. Some people have the idea, well I'm living my life and all of a sudden I come to a fork in the road and I choose the narrow road or I choose the broad road. Oh no, you just were born and everybody's born on the broad road that leads to destruction. But yet Jesus came and he provided a narrow path that is going in the opposite direction. It's going toward heaven while the world's going to hell. And when we were dead in our trespasses and sin, he made us alive, took us off that broad road, put us on that narrow path so that we would not follow the ways of the world but we'd follow the ways of God. Dead in trespasses and sin. Have you ever noticed you can't tempt

a dead man with anything? You walk right up to the casket and say, you're ugly. He didn't care. You're not going to offend him. He's dead. Everybody say dead. And I want you to know we're all born spiritually that way. Theologians call it total depravity. It means that everything, all of creation, including man, is under the curse of sin and there's not anything that sin did not affect. And so, apart from God, we have no awareness of spiritual things. The natural man does not receive spiritual things, the Bible says. We have no activity of God. You know, the world says, hey man, you've got a flicker of good in you, we've just got to fan the flame. No, the Bible says you're a sinner and I'm a sinner and in our flesh dwells no good thing. There's no ability to come to God on your own. Good works are as filthy rags before a holy God. It's not of works, lest any man should boast. And you have no appetite for God. I want you to know that if you have a desire for God, it's only because He put it in you. People will say things like this, when somebody turns up a bottle of liquor, they're looking for God. No, they're not. They're looking for liquor. They're looking for another high. Sin is pleasurable for a season, the Bible says. And so ultimately, if we are looking for God, it is only because God put that desire in our heart that we would hunger and thirst for righteousness. You know, you can take a pig and clean it up on the outside, but you know what it's going to do when you turn him loose? He's going right back to the mud hole in the mud pen. That's his nature. And you can clean up the outside all you want to, but inside, if God doesn't clean you up, let me tell you, if He doesn't change your nature and give you a new nature, you're going right back to the same old sin. In fact, the Bible says that the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God's eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Sin leads to brokenness. And I just said to you, we live in a broken world. Why are things all around us just so bad, so depressing? I'll tell you why, sin, sin is the problem. And sin is not just an act. We think of sin like stealing or lying. Well, it's not just an act, it's an attitude. It's coveting. It's lusting. Not just adultery, but the lust in your heart. Are you tracking with me? And so there's a verse that says we have been talking about faith that really came to my mind as I was praying and studying this whole sermon. In Romans 14, 23, everything that is not from faith is, you say it. That means anything in the flesh that is not done in faith is sin. If I'm preaching up here in the flesh apart from faith, preaching in my own strength and apart from the Spirit of God, you know what the Bible says? That preaching is sin. Every time you sing, every time you give, every time you witness, every time you pray and you do it apart from faith and apart from Him and you're doing it for yourself and you're not doing it for His glory, the Bible says it is sin. James said this, to know to do good and not do it is sin. So there are sins of omission and commission. Sins of omission, you're not doing what God has told you you should do. And sins of commission, where you are doing something that God has told you not to do. So that explains the start of sin and why we're struggling and why the world is like it is. Sin of commission, the snare of sin, look back at the passage, therefore we also sense, we're surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily, here it is, ensnares us.

The sin, God the Holy Spirit may reveal to you today the sin that has ensnared and entangled you but it may not be the same sin that ensnares or entangles me. What's the sin that trips you up? And ultimately what will send someone to hell is the sin of unbelief, of not putting your faith and trust in Jesus. So we think about what it means to lay aside, we think about what it means to be ensnared. Have you ever seen the program Wipe Out? You ever watched it? I mean, it's just so funny. These people start out, point A, trying to get to point B and all along the way, man, all these obstacles are there and all these difficulties and challenges and you know what happens? Most of them get wiped out. And that's exactly the way it is in life. The devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. The devil wants to wipe you out. Jesus came to give you life and that life more abundant. And so what are the things that you need to lay aside today? The term here in the Greek, lay aside, is the very same word that is used in Ephesians and Colossians when Paul talked about put off the old man, put on the new man. I want to read it to you. Therefore put to death what belongs to the earthly or sinful nature, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these things, God's wrath is coming upon the disobedient and you once walked in these things. Now remember, he's writing to the church. These people have been and saved, so he's reminding them where they came from when you were living in them, but now, here's the word, lay aside, very same word in the Greek, put away all the following, anger, wrath, malice, slander, filthy language from your mouth, do not lie to one another

since you have, here it is, put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, you're being renewed in knowledge according to, here, we're going right back to Genesis, to the image of your creator, you were made in God's image, sin has marred that image, but when you come to Christ, listen, he is going to restore you back to your original intent and purpose, put your hands together and praise God. So there's a sense in which salvation is past, present, and future, now watch this, past, I have been saved, alright, that's justification at the cross, he paid for our sin just as if we'd never sinned, justification, I have been saved, I am being saved, that's called sanctification and that's where the putting off and putting on comes every day, when he said die to sin, that's not a one time thing, you've got to do that every day, every day, you've got to put off the old man, put on the new man, you know kids, they love to play dress up, and so little kids are put on adult clothes and adult shoes and you know, it's kind of cute and it looks funny, but you know what happens to those kids, they become adults, and then all of a sudden the adult clothes fits them, spiritually speaking, we're children, but we're growing, and right now, I don't look like Jesus, but one day I will, he is going to sanctify us, he's going to make us into the very image of Christ, hallelujah. Here it is, justification, I have been saved, sanctification, I am being saved, glorification, one day I'll be like him, because I will see him, and I'll be as he is, the Bible says. So think about this, if I came up today, and like those little children trying to dress up and put on some things that maybe shouldn't go together or would be too big for me, if I had on an overcoat and a suit coat and another coat, it wouldn't look good on me, and that's what it looked like when you, listen, you're now a Christian, but yet you still got some old things from the old life, and you're trying to put the new on on top of it, no you've got to take off the sin first. If you go around, here it is, you go around, and you've got the new man, and yet the old man, and they're just overlapping, here it is, anger doesn't look good on you, wrath doesn't look good on you, malice doesn't look good on you, slander doesn't look good on you, filthy language doesn't look good on you, lying to one another doesn't look good on you, look at the person next to you and say, that doesn't look good on you. Now we're not talking about what you're wearing today, some of you just woke up and you have no clue what we're talking about, and you think somebody's offended you,

if you'd been awake and listening, you'd know that they're not talking about your outfit, they're talking about these sins don't look good on you, alright? And it's important that we daily do this, I think about children when they begin to walk, they take two or three steps and woo, we clap, we celebrate, well let me tell you, the Father in heaven celebrates when you are taking two and three steps, learning to walk in the spirit and not fulfill the deeds of the flesh. And so that's what we're talking about today, putting off sin and putting on the new man. Put to death, I didn't say this in the first service, but I meant to, put it to death. Some of you are playing with sin, and I'm telling you, it's gonna kill you. It's like what you see in the news when somebody takes a wild animal and tries to domesticate it, there's no such thing as a pet python. People say, you know, you read these stories, you know, their pet python, you know, wrapped around their neck and choked them and killed them or swallowed their baby. Well, you idiot, what are you doing playing with a python? Seriously. I'm telling you, playing with sin is like playing with a python. And this snare, he talks about the sin that ensnares us, that we've got to put off and we've got to put to death. He gives examples of it, alright? Proverbs 29, 25, fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusted the Lord will be kept safe. Nothing keeps you from living for Jesus. like the fear of man. Your desire to be accepted, you will compromise and do anything, you'll end up being conformed to this world. And the Bible says be transformed from this world. The world is not our friend. James 4.4, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. God deliver us from the fear of man and wanting the acceptance of man. God give us a fear of God and all our respect for who He is. And I'm telling you, if you please God it doesn't matter who else you displace. When you pray for yourself, when you pray for your children, pray that they'll have the fear of God. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. So we don't want them to have the fear of man. No, you run with the wrong crowd and it's a snare. Proverbs 22.5, in the paths of the wicked are snares and pitfalls. But those who would preserve their life stay far from them. Oh, how many times have I said it? Friends are like buttons on an elevator. They'll take you up or they'll take you down. You make wrong choices when you listen to wrong voices. Listen, if you're going to be

running your race by faith, you got to be running with like-minded people who are going in the same direction. That's the importance of the local church. That's the importance of Christians as a small group. That iron sharpens iron and we encourage one another and we say to one another, we speak the truth in love. That doesn't look good on you. You shouldn't have written that. You shouldn't have posted that. You shouldn't have said that. You need people speaking in your life who love you, who care about you, who want nothing but the best for you. In Exodus, God warned his people. He said, don't become like the nations that I kicked out to put you in the promised land because if you become like them, they will be snares to you. Ask God to give you the fear of God. Pray this for your children and then ask God to bring the right friends in your life and take the wrong ones out. Hey, you are where you are today only by the grace of God and the people he brought into your life that were good and the ones he took out that were not leading you in the right direction. Here's another one. Another snare is sexual immorality. Proverbs 7.21. She seduces him with her persistent pleading. She lures him with her flattery talk. In fact, in one place, her lips are like honey. We call her Honey Lips. He follows her impulsively like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer bounding toward a trap until an arrow pierces its liver like a bird darting into a snare. He doesn't know it will cost him his life. Sin will take you further than you want to go and it will keep you there than you want to stay and it will cost you more than you want to pay. Here's another one. Greed. 1 Timothy 6.9. Those who want to get rich. It says, fall into temptation and a trap, a snare, and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. How many people have you seen, they have ruined their life, ruined their marriage, many of them have ruined their business and career because of love of money. The Bible doesn't say money is the root of all evil. You have to have it to survive. But the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money have wandered from the faith. Hey, we all want God to bless us, but we don't want a blessing that's going to lead us away from God. That will cause you to put your trust in finances or stuff, money down here on this earth, or that you leave for your children and cause them to not put their faith in the living God. It says, they've wandered far from the faith and they've pierced themselves with many griefs. Here's what I tell you.

Living for stuff, for money down here on earth, is like living for Monopoly money. How many of you have played Monopoly? Let me tell you how it goes at our house. Boy, you're going along there and you're playing that game and you're buying all the land you can buy, all the property you can buy, you're buying all the houses you can buy, you're buying all the hotels you can buy. You're trying to bankrupt everybody around you. And about 1 a.m. in the morning, they're all mad, they're bankrupt, they don't congratulate you, they don't help you clean up the game, they're not speaking to you, they won't even kiss you goodnight. and so you're left with all your stuff and it goes back in the box and I'm telling you one of these days you're gonna die I don't care how much land you have how many houses how much property how many hotels let me tell you when you die they can cremate you they can embalm you and bury you you going in the box that's it and so that's what it's like when we put our faith our trust and the things of this world you know sin ensnares us in Hebrews we just read it it clings to us have you ever seen kudzu you know they brought it here I believe from India and they would use it to try to help cut down on the erosion and you see it on the interstate you see it everywhere and look what happened it takes over kudzu just chokes the life out of all the other plants and that's exactly what sin does it's described like this in James but each person is tempted when he is drawn away and enticed by his own evil desire then after desire has conceived it gives birth to sin and when sin is fully grown it gives birth to everybody say it this is the way he describes sin he said you look at it and it looks tempting it looks good so you dabble in it next thing you know it conceives it grows it gives birth but the child is stillborn tell me I know that pain we know that sorrow our son Zachary and his wife Tori they know that not once but twice we saw someone baptized today in the first service her name's Stephanie and she was pregnant and she came to this church came to Christ and after the child was born she was going to be baptized but her baby died her baby was stillborn and yet today she got in those baptismal waters in the first service and in the grief and the sorrow and all

of the confusion and you wonder what God is doing she said but God I will worship you anyway I'm gonna follow you anyway listen the world may debate what good and evil is they may say that you can't call something sin but there is no debate in heaven forever Oh Lord thy word is settled in heaven forever I'm saying to you today the world tell you got your right to your opinion to your feelings to your preference to your choice but I'm saying to you today God is the final judge in fact the writer of Hebrew said solid food is for the mature for those whose senses have been trained watch this to distinguish between good and evil and you say oh but if I know my heart you don't no one does Jeremiah said the hearts deceitful above all things and beyond cure who can know it who can understand it you don't know your heart don't deceive yourself John said if we claim to be without sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not innocent how many times have you heard somebody say well I prayed about it and God gave me peace I don't think such and such as the sin I don't think that what I'm doing is sin God God told me it's okay well let me just make something clear to you God's never gonna tell you anything that contradicts this book right here never listen I don't care what somebody else told you I don't care what your what some voice said to you saying it's all all right hear me if the Bible says it's sin it's sin period that settles it and he tells us what sin because he loves us he tells us what sin because he's not mad at you he loves you and he doesn't want you to suffer the pain the death the separation of sin so I ask you what sin entangles you what sin has tripped you up listen we talked about the start of sin and the snare of sin here's the last one the solution to sin look at the text again looking to Jesus the founder the perfecter of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross the solution to sin is the cross despising the shame and he's seated at the right hand of the throne of God and he is making intercession for you today to throw off the sin that entangles you we've got to throw off the sin but we can't do it on our own that's why the Psalmist said my eyes are ever on the Lord for only he

will release my feet from the snare. You want to throw off sin? Look to Jesus. The solution to sin is the cross. We can't save ourselves. Only Jesus can redeem. Only Jesus can rescue. Only He can restore us back to the original purpose. What can wash away my sin? Talk to me. Nothing but the blood of Jesus. What can make me whole again? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. All precious is the flow that makes me white as snow. No other fount I know. Nothing, absolutely nothing but the blood of Jesus. When Adam sinned and Eve sinned, the Bible says that they were naked and they hid themselves in shame. But God came and in mercy He made garments of animal skins. You don't get garments of animal skins without death, without the shedding of blood. The Bible says without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sin. We see that one lamb for one person right there in the garden. Then at Passover it was one lamb for a whole family and they put the blood on the door post. Then on the Day of Atonement one time a year the high priest would go into the Holy of Holies and he would sprinkle the blood on the mercy seat and it was one lamb for a whole nation. But hear me, when Jesus died on the cross He is the once and for all sacrifice for sin. He is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. At the birth of Jesus it said she will give birth to a son and you are to call His name, everybody say it, come on every campus shout it out, Jesus because He will save His people from their sins. I think about that one message all the way from Genesis to Revelation starting there in the garden and we have seen it in Hebrews 11. Rahab the prostitute she just believed by faith put that scarlet thread right out the window and that red scarlet thread was symbolic of the blood and it saved her and it saved her family. Listen the Bible says the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. The Bible says we are overcomers through the blood of the Lamb. I believe people are going to leave today free throwing off the sin that has entangled you all these years and it will happen because of the power that is in the blood. Here is what Romans says for justice through disobedience of one man, that is Adam, many were made sinners. So also through the obedience of one man, that is Jesus, the many will be made righteous. Let me tell you what happened when Adam sinned. When Adam sinned, listen, sin was imputed to our account. We are all sinners. We inherited it from Adam but let me tell you the Bible says when Jesus died on the cross he took upon himself your

sin, my sin, the sin of the world and he imputes to our account, credits to our account his righteousness. Come on somebody put your hands together and praise God. Adam and Eve sinned in the garden at the tree and yet all throughout scripture it points to the cross, it points to the tree. I don't have time to give you all the examples but in Genesis 21-33 it says Abraham planted a tree and he called on the name of the Lord and don't miss that, he planted a tree. Why? Because the only way you can call on the name of the Lord is through the cross. Zacchaeus, he wanted to see Jesus so he climbed up in a tree, that's right, because you can't see Jesus apart from the cross. Isaiah put it like this, we all like sheep have gone astray, each of us have turned to our own way and the Lord laid on him the iniquity of us all. See Adam and Eve, they believed the lie of the devil that if you'll eat of this fruit then you're going to have knowledge, you're going to be like God. And that's why I love this quote, the essence of sin is man substituting himself for God. Salvation is God substituting himself for man. I don't want you to miss what God wants to do today in your life. Hear me, last verse, God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. You can throw off sin today, you can be set free today. I close with this story. About 3 a.m. I got a text on my phone. phone. I didn't read it at 3 a.m. My phone was on silent. But at 5 when I got up I saw the text and it was from David Slayer. It said that he and Robin had gotten the call at 1 a.m. for her to come to UVA and get her kidney transplant. And they were driving and I called them and we prayed together. And Tammy and I were talking about it as we were getting ready for church. And I know the illustration is not perfect. And I know that it has limits. If you heard that say amen. So don't send me your email telling me why this illustration does not always apply. Just receive what you can receive from it. And don't get legalistic about it. Alright? We were talking about the beautiful picture and her receiving that gift. Number one for her to receive that gift she had to know that she was sick. She had to find out that she had a kidney that wasn't functioning. And it's the same way with you. You got to know that you're centering in need of a Savior. And for her to get that kidney, watch this now. She had to not only know that she needed it but she had to be willing to go for

the surgery. She could work out all she wanted to but exercise wasn't going to heal her. She could think positive and have positive thoughts. But the power of positive thinking was not going to heal her. She needed a surgeon. And her husband couldn't be that surgeon and she couldn't be that surgeon. But she had to be willing to get up at 1am and go to the hospital when they called. And that surgical team was ready to remove the diseased kidney. And that's what God wants to do in your life today. He wants to remove sin that entangles you. And He wants to replace it with a perfectly good kidney. He wants to replace it with His righteousness. Are you getting anything out of this? The last thing I tell you is this. For her to receive that gift, someone had to die. And when I prayed with her and David, thanking God for the gift. We also prayed for a family that lost a loved one. And I'm grateful that they wanted to, as their last act of life, to donate their organs and to give that kidney so somebody else could have the gift of life. And so I'm saying to you today that the only way that you can have sin thrown off and removed and the righteousness of God imputed to you is because Jesus died for you. Someone died for you to be able to have this gift. So bow with me for prayer. And pray this in your heart. Just say, Dear God, I know I'm a sinner. And I know I cannot save myself. I'm not trusting in good works or morality or religion. I trust in the cross of Jesus and the shed blood to pay for my sin. God, I repent. And I thank you, Jesus, for taking all my sin. And I pray that you will write to my account that it will be imputed to me, your righteousness. And I pray you'd fill me with the Holy Spirit and help me to keep throwing off sin every day and to walk in victory and to live a life where you're making me more like you and getting me back to the original design and purpose for which you put me here on this earth. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus' name, in everyone's sin, amen. Amen. Scripture says when even one sinner repents, that all of heaven rejoices. Come on, church family. But this morning, we've really been praying for a different group of people that would hear this message. And it's been on my mind and heart all day. You know, I grew up in church, and I went to church every Sunday. And for decades, I was bound by sin. As I would hear the messages, all I could think about was how much shame and guilt. All the things I was walking in that wasn't of God. And I would just sit through the whole story. service and just bear getting through it thinking I'm gonna leave here still bound. And many of you have been coming to church like that for a long time and today is the day of freedom. I want you to stand all over this place. You know pastor never listed a lot of specific sins and many of you could be in this room and the whole time he was preaching you had your sin on your mind. You were thinking about the thing that's ensnared you for decades, for years, the thing that's threatened to destroy your life, the addiction that you keep going back to. You say, Daniel I signed a card, I walked in now, I prayed a prayer. That's not what I'm asking. I'm asking are you free? Where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom and this hour he's here. So you don't have to leave this service bound by anything. Today you can be free in Jesus name. I want to invite our staff and our prayer team all across the front. I want our staff and prayer team to spread out and be available to pray with people. But I want to invite you, even now, if you want to be free, if you want the fullness that God has for you, the life that he intended for you, this altar is open. I want to invite you to come to this altar. We're gonna close our service by worshiping the Lord and by responding in faith together. And I'm telling you even now, God's calling people to himself. Freedom reigns here. So Holy Spirit do it only you can do. God right now will you grant us the gift of faith. Nothing has overtaken us that's not common to man. And with every temptation you have provided the way of escape. And so right now I pray that you would free people decisively from addiction in the name of Jesus. I pray for those bound by pride, by greed, by

lust, by substance abuse. I pray for those who are causing each other to walk in sin, friends that are dragging each other down. And God I'm asking right now by the power of your Spirit that you would wash us clean. There's therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For Jesus has done what our flesh could never do. If we confess our sin, you're faithful and just to forgive us our sin and cleanse us of all unrighteousness. Hallelujah. So Jesus we're coming back to you, responding to you. And we pray now that you would wash us clean, that you would purify your church, that you would sanctify us and set us apart for your namesake and for your glory. What can wash away my sin? Nothing but the blood of Jesus. We receive your blood so wash over us now. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Come on, you respond as the Lord leads you. Let's worship Him together. Everything changed. It's getting harder to recognize the person I was before I encountered Christ. I don't walk like I used to. I don't talk like I used to. I've been washed from the inside. I've been washed from the inside. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. I know it was the blood. Could have only been the blood. Hallelujah. Hallelujah. I know it was the blood. ♪ It could have only been you ♪ ♪ It could have only been that cross ♪ ♪ It could have only been you ♪ ♪ I cannot explain why nothing's more real than this ♪ ♪ In the presence of God ♪ ♪ But when my heart experienced all my shame at the wayside ♪ ♪ And my sin at the most high ♪ ♪ I was washed from the inside ♪ ♪ I've been washed from the inside out ♪ ♪ Hallelujah, hallelujah ♪ ♪ I know it was the end, could have only been the beginning ♪ ♪ In the presence of God, hallelujah, hallelujah ♪ ♪ I know it was the blood, it could have only been the end ♪ I wanna invite you at home to press in and join us in prayer.

And I wanna invite anybody in the room who wants to come out into the aisles or come down to the altar. It's day eight of 21 days of prayer. And we're gonna pray, thanking God that he is throwing off sin in our life, making us more like Jesus, that we're putting off the old man, putting on the new man. We're gonna pray the very promises that we have studied today as I invite you to come. Father, I thank you for your word to us today. Where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And I'm praying through the blood of Jesus that you'll minister life to us today. I thank you that life is in the blood. And Lord, I pray you'll minister spiritual life to us. Lord, I thank you for those who were dead and trespassed into sin that you brought to life today. Lord, you reminded us who have been saved where we came from, that you brought us off the broad road and put us on the narrow path. And Lord, today we wanna agree with your word. And whatever you have said is sin is sin. And Lord, I pray that right now the spirit of truth would help us to pray in the spirit about the very things that entangle us and hold us back. Thank you that the blood of Jesus speaks a better word. We're not gonna listen to the lies of this world. We're not gonna listen to the lies of the devil.

We're not even gonna deceive ourselves. I thank you for the blood of Jesus that is defending us, speaking on our behalf in heaven right now. Lord, you tell us to be holy. And Father, we can't do that on our own. So Jesus, I'm asking you at the right hand of the Father to call every one of us by name to pray for us to be holy. And I ask Holy Spirit for you to come and experientially to change us from the inside out. I pray that you would fill us, Holy Spirit, that you would sanctify, set us apart for the glory of God. Thank you that Jesus, you took our sin and you imputed to us your righteousness. And we bless your holy name that we have received what we do not deserve, what we cannot borrow, what we cannot buy. I thank you for the blood. I thank you that the blood has been sprinkled on the mercy seat in heaven for our behalf. The blood's been sprinkled for, call your name. Just whisper your name right now. The blood's been sprinkled for, and I thank you that it's been applied. And therefore, the debt has been paid. Therefore, Lord, our record is clean because of the blood of Jesus. And so we just shout glory. Everybody say glory. We say glory.

Glory to your name. Because there to our heart was the blood applied. Glory to your name. Thank you that today there's healing in the atonement and in the blood. Lord, you were wounded for our transgressions. You were bruised for our iniquities. Surely you bore our sorrow and by your stripes we are healed. And I'm praying for people to receive physical healing right now in the name of Jesus. I pray for those who are struggling. with depression and emotional issues I pray that they would throw off that spirit of heaviness and put on a garment of praise and that you would heal them emotionally from the scars of the past and the name of Jesus I pray right now strongholds will be torn down our weapons are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds and so in the name that's above every name in the name of Jesus and on the authority of the Word of God and through the power that's in the blood of the Lamb we tear down all strongholds we break the yoke the bondage in the name of Jesus and I pray that we'll leave this place walking in victory Oh God let us remember day 8 let us remember day 8 day 8 when Robin received that kidney transplant day 8 when people were set free day 8 when prodigal sons and daughters came home day 8 when people knew that God had healed them God let us remember day 8 and I pray that we will walk out of here knowing that we are overcomers through the blood of the Lamb put your hands together and praise God I see nothing but the blood of Jesus and what can make me whole again nothing but the blood of Jesus
