Thou Shall Not Steal | Road Trip | Pastor Zak White

It's not a fraction of it all, not some of it all, not most of it all. He reigns above it all. And here's what the enemy does. The enemy stirs up something for you to be afraid of, something for you to worry about, something else for you to be distracted with. And what the enemy is trying to do is get your attention off God and onto your problems. Goliath is impressive among men he was. But you put Goliath up to God, nothing about Goliath is impressive. I don't know what your Goliath is. I don't know what the mountain needs to be moved, the door that needs to be open. I don't know where breakthrough is needed, but here's what I do know. If you have a moment just to release, just to let go and say, "God, you, you reign above it all." Everybody got some relational challenges. Everybody got some emotional challenges, some financial challenges, some spiritual challenges. And yet God reigns above it all. He is high. He has looked it up. As far as high as the heavens are above the heavens above the earth, so high, his ways than our ways. And so maybe you don't understand your season, just trust the reason that God said, "I got you." You know, we say that all the time, right? Like, "I got you." You know, Gavin this week was like, "Oh, man, I left my football stuff." We're like, "Tough luck." No, it isn't. We said, "We got you." Aren't you thankful God doesn't say, "Tough luck." Aren't you thankful God says, "I got you?"

If you don't know, God's got you. Would you do this just real quick, close your eyes real quick, let's have an invitation before the message because we're going to have a powerful message and a powerful invitation afterwards. But would you just release it to God, whatever that is, whatever the enemy's been trying to put on the throne of your heart, of worry, of fear, uncertainty, whatever it is, would you just say, "Jesus, I'm turning back to you." And I'm just declaring that you and you alone reign above it all. All of it. And so I release it and I trust you. Now look right here. You know what? You know, it's awesome. We're going to leave here today transformed by the Word of God, by the renewing of our mind. You're going to leave lighter because Jesus did some heavy lifting today. You get ready to hear the best message I've ever heard on the verse. I don't want to still pass this next letter, but you get ready to hear the best message I've ever heard on this Ten Commandment. And I told pastors act that in private. I'm telling you that in public. You need to take notes. We need to listen. But you know what we need to do more and listen? We need to lean in. We need to obey. That's the game changer for our church, for our community, for your life, for your family, for your generations. After you, this is a game changer. and the church isn't the stage. So production, guys, thank you for what you do. I know a lot of times you only get the earful, the bad stuff, but y'all are awesome when we love you and appreciate you so much. Pastor Tim and Stephanie are a gift from God to you. Do you realize that? Do you realize that? Ephesians 4 says that God gave your pastors as a gift to you. And that the gift that they really bring is they build you up, challenge you in your faith, teach you the Scriptures so that you can build up the body of Christ. They're a gift to you so you can be equipped to be the church. We all know that we're the church, we all love that we're the church. And I love the momentum as a church that understands that, that you're out there, you're being the church. What an incredible place. When you come here, you can sense it, you can feel it. You can feel it. You can put this next part online. I'm going to say something. I was at a church if you don't put this online, cut the live feed right now. I was at a church several weeks ago, several months ago that I love big church, like tens of thousands of people. Can I just tell y'all, y'all's worship, y'all are rowdy, y'all love Jesus. You can feel it. I'm on the front row. Sound like there are 50,000 people worshiping behind me because I'm at the church of tens of thousands of people and it's just dead silent. So you guys worship your brains out and that's awesome. You got night of worship tonight? We have to leave right after church, but I kind of want to see if we can change our

flights and go to night of worship. I'm excited. I got to change it close to you. I'm excited. I'm excited about what God's going to do tonight. Your pastors are blessing to us. They're fighting the good fight. They're builders. They're fighters. They're cool. Isn't it cool to have cool pastors? Those cool people. I mean, that's not what's really important, but you could be dorky and we'd still love you because you love Jesus. Isn't it good to have godly pastors? These people, they love you and we see some of the behind the scenes. They pray over you guys. We've seen them shed tears. They share stories about you and what God's doing in your life. What a blessing. This gift that God has given you and they've got good fruit. They've got good fruit. I can love a terrible college football team and still love Jesus. Still have good fruit. I still love you, man. All right. Let's read our Bible verse for today. Pastor Tim said, "You can preach on anything as long as it's this." Exodus chapter 20 verse 15. It's a long one.

You ready? Let's read it together. You shall not steal. All right. Real quick before we sit down. Anyone here show hands ever rob a bank? No? Up in the top there, you'd probably be sitting up there if you robbed a bank. Anybody ever hot wire a car? But this is like military stuff, right? Like, okay, yeah. See, you guys are all right. You're not breaking the command because it was to take out the bad guys, right? Like, held up a gas station, anybody? So do we need this sermon? Are we good? All right. Let's pray. Can we lift our hands? Jesus, thank you so much for what you want to do today. I pray that today we would see the fullness of this command, what it means for us. God, I pray for open and ready hearts, Holy Spirit, would you have your way today? We don't want to come here and leave unchanged. We want to come here and encounter you, your presence, your glory, and be challenged and changed by it. Come off. That's true for you. Pray these words. Say Jesus. My heart is open.

My mind is ready. Make me better, God. Change me, God, through the power of your word. In Jesus' name. Amen. High five, somebody grab your seat. You shall not steal. You shall not steal. How many of you know when you're studying the Bible, the best way to study the Bible is with the Bible? That we interpret Scripture with Scripture. We never look at one little phrase God says and assume we know everything. We look at everything God says about that thing. We don't go to Google or AI as our authority. We let Scripture be the authority. So when we read something as simple as you shall not steal and we think, are we really about to hear a sermon on this? This is ABCs. We got this pastor. Have we looked at the other scriptures? Have we let Scripture interpret this Scripture? I think you might be a little surprised today about the fullness of this command. Actually, all the 10 commandments are kind of like that, aren't they? let me show you what this really means. And then you read what Jesus said about that command and you're like, oh, like all Tim, most of us think we got these on lock, we're good. This box is checked, let's move on to deeper things. I'm telling you, this is about as deep as it gets these 10 commands.

So let me read to you Psalm 24, verse one. The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof. The world and those who dwell therein. So when we talk about you shall not steal, we need to start with this, God owns everything. Not some things, not most things, God owns everything. He's not the co-owner, he is the owner. The heart of a Christ follower says, "God, it's all yours, it all belongs to you, Father. "Every dollar in my wallet belongs to you, Father. "Every square foot of my house belongs to you, Father. "Every asset in my portfolio belongs to you, Father. "Every talent you've given me belongs to you. "Every dream in my heart belongs to you, God." Do you have that heart that God owns everything? Now, I know at the bank, your name's written on the title. But as Christians, we believe it's all a blessing from God and we get to manage it. We get to steward it. We get to serve his kingdom with it. Somebody say God's the owner. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 4-7, sometimes Paul's a little cheeky, I think. He says, "What do you have that you did not receive?" And it's like, yeah, he's right. Everything I have I received somehow. Every talent I have I received from God. Every blessing I have I received from God. Every dollar I have came from the very hand of God. And now, again, I get the opportunity to serve him with it,

to steward it, to manage it, to use it for his glory. This is really where the command begins. God owns it all. He owns it all. And not just that, but Jesus looks at the heart. Have you noticed Jesus is really good at looking at the heart? There's a guy in Luke, I'm sorry, in Mark, chapter 10. He runs to Jesus and he says, "Hey, Jesus, good teacher. "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" And then Jesus kind of starts listing the 10 commandments, but he specifically lists this one. It's really interesting. He says to this guy, "Hey, you shall not steal." And the guy's like, "Yeah, I know that. "I've known that since I was a kid." This guy looks Jesus right in the eye and he says, "I've kept all those commands from my youth." And he's not lying. From what we can tell, it sounds like by every external measure, when it came to the 10 commandments, this guy was clean. But then Jesus looks him right in the eye and he says this. He says, "You lack one thing." He looks him in the eye and he loves him. He says, "You lack one thing. "Go and sell all that you have and give to the poor "and you'll have treasure in heaven and come and follow me." And it says he was disheartened by the saying. He went away sorrowful for he had great possessions. Or I think he could say for his great possessions had him. So this command is not just about taking something

that doesn't belong to you. I think this command is also very much about the stuff you're supposed to hold loosely. This stuff you're supposed to have and use. And how sometimes that stuff, like this guy, gets settled in your heart. And so now you don't have the stuff, but the stuff has you. You follow me? It's not just about taking something that doesn't belong to you. It's also about clinging tightly to something you're supposed to release to God. Holding tightly something you're supposed to allow God to speak to you about. So this command is just as much for the super sincere, super religious person. You've been in church every day since the day you were born. You never stole a dollar like a day in your life, but maybe somehow you're being owned a little by what you're supposed to own. You're being owned a little by what God has entrusted to you. So we define stealing like so, so narrow, but God goes, it's actually more like this. It's a pretty broad thing when you really think about it. And when you really think about it, really study it, I think most of us will find ourselves somewhere inside this command. Now, yes, there's all the obvious stuff. Let's name it, let's kind of get it out of the way.

It's important, robbery, bad, don't do it. Committing fraud, bad, don't do it. Stealing from your job, don't do it. Shoplifting, embezzlement, breaking into somebody's home. We all know that. Those are clear violations of you shall not steal. Most of you are not doing those things, but you do reach all kinds of people at Momentum Church so hold your purse real tight, ladies, all right? Did we get the obvious stuff out of the way? Don't you love that you serve a church like that where there probably is someone in the room? Yeah. Isn't it amazing to be a part of a church? (audience applauding) Obvious stuff out of the way. What about all the not so obvious stuff? Like you get a you get a full-time salary, but you put in half the effort You work full-time, but you scroll three of those hours at the office. Oh I was stepping on some scrolling toes now. I said like how about you pad the expense report. How about you call in sick, but you're not sick You're perfectly fine. You probably never thought of that as stealing That's stealing Paul says in Colossians 3 that whatever we do we're to work at it with all of our heart as if we work for the Lord as Christians Ultimately, we don't believe our paycheck comes from ABC corporation. Yeah, their names on the paycheck They do the bank transfer, but it comes from God. We work for the Lord. We work for his glory Our work is part of our worship So our work ethic then is not just a business issue. It's a it's a worship issue, right? What about being dishonest and how you conduct business? The Bible talks a lot about having a dishonest weight or a dishonest scale Proverbs 11 a false balance is an Abomination to the Lord

It's not a lot of things that God calls an abomination, but that's one of them, but a just weight is his delight So that could be dishonest scales. It could be bending the numbers a little in the business deal It could be misleading advertising it'd be charging more than you agreed upon initially I just think God is not impressed by the deal that you closed he's impressed with how you close the deal that you closed These things are not quite as obvious, right? But they matter to God they should matter to us. What about gossip? Gossip shows up in a lot of the 10 commandments, doesn't it? Gossip's a form of stealing Because you're stealing from someone's reputation and they don't even know a lot of times that you're doing it It takes something from somebody What about stealing at the governmental level? AKA socialism Our world's really mixed up about this one right now But God gave us a brain So that we could read the scripture a spirit so we could be moved in the spirit right in the heart But a brain so we can also logically think so we can read the scriptures and think and have discussion and work through our faith So think with me for a second by prohibiting stealing by saying you shall not steal God is simultaneously declaring the individuals Have the right a God given right to own property To own things because basically think think with me and nobody owns anything then you can't steal So if God's take was there's no owners no one owns anything then he wouldn't have had to say you shall not steal That's a biblical principle like built into this command Which would mean that socialism and let's just define that as the government taking something by force and given it to somebody else That would violate this command regardless of how good the motive might be the the motive does not change the mechanism compelled redistribution forced Distribution is still taking what belongs to someone with no consent and giving it to someone else now A lot of people will say today like well the first church did that no they didn't they didn't have a gun to their head They weren't forced They did it because their lives have been radically transformed by the gospel That's why we give because Jesus has changed our lives All right, I got a bonus one you want the bonus one I got one more and I really believe that this is part of why

God sent me this weekend pasture Tim had actually asked me to preach originally on You shall not lie and like last minute Decided hey, can we can you do the stealing one not knowing now? We talked about it, but not knowing I was gonna give you this bonus point Okay, so I really believe God sent me here for this I'll just read a scripture for this one and let you figure it out Malachi chapter three Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing me This is God talking but you say how have we robbed you you shall not steal? How are we robbing you God? How are we stealing from you? God says in your tithes in your contributions? So according to God refusing to tithe is stealing from him And I don't know about you, but like not only do I not want to be a thief if I am gonna be a thief I definitely don't want to steal from my heavenly father come on somebody Of all of the forms of stealing. This is why you interpret scripture with scripture All the forms of stealing you probably never thought of this one and It's probably the one that the most it's most prevalent in the church unfortunately Where Christians just steal? Now if you don't want to tie this maybe you're kind of new to faith your your pastors They preach it faithfully. You can go. I'm sure watch a ton of sermons online where they get way more into this I'll give it to you super short form Okay, the tithe is a principle from the Old Testament all the way through the New Testament Jesus himself said that we should do it he affirmed it There's a lot of godless chatter online out there that does all these little things where they're twisting and contorting scripture and ignoring those scriptures only there and only grabbing these scriptures to try to explain that this isn't really what the tithe is, but I'm just telling you, it's a bunch of godless lies at the end of the day

if you really wanna get to the bottom of it. It's a principle. God gave it hundreds of years before the law was ever given in the Old Testament. And then it just traces all the way through the scripture again, even with Jesus. And the idea here is we bring the first 10% of all that God has given us back to God through his house, through the local church. And it's supposed to be the first. Actually, that's kind of the point that it would be first. That's the idea of the tithe. And I know that's hard. You might be a new Christian, been a Christian a long time. Maybe you're sitting there and going, "Man, I still know how I could ever, ever, ever do that." Listen, I've been there, I get it. My wife is here with me today. We just celebrated 25 years of marriage. (congregation applauding) And when we were engaged, this was a long time ago. There wasn't online giving. Couldn't scan the QR code to give. None of that. So how many of you all remember those days? Like you gave in front of everybody. In the church, the basket came, like you could hear, did they tear a check off? (grunting)

You could hear. It's a little different, I'm just saying. It wasn't judgment, but it was different. So I had asked her to marry me, and she had noticed I was not putting anything in the bucket. So I have one of those wives that would get all up in your face, so I don't know if there's anyone else like that here, in a good way. Like I'm super grateful for it, right? And she said, before we even married, she said, "Hey, if we're gonna be married, "we gotta talk about something. "We will tithe from day one." I was like, I guess I have a decision to make, 'cause I still wanna get married, or not, right? Like, and I felt like the Holy Spirit taught me that day that I needed to rip the band-aid off and trust God. Stop robbing him and go for it. So I got my checkbook out, 'cause back then he carried an actual checkbook. You remember? And I went to the penny, 10% to the penny. Who remembers that? I ain't rounding up. I'm also not rounding down. I think I remember it was like $86 and 17 cents. And then I made sure she saw too. I was like, let me, oh, thank you for the bucket, Amber. And I don't say this to brag on me.

I say it to brag on God, but the things that I have learned and how much I've grown in my faith, I've not missed a single tithe check since that day. But I want you to connect the dot for a second. This just hit me. That one had happened if a godly person who was already tithing didn't talk to me about it, didn't challenge me, didn't open up the scripture and go, you're robbing God, like, are you okay with that? I mean, she's basically saying that day, I'm not sure I want to marry a god robber. I got the message. But let's think about that for a second. Let that sit a second. How crazy is it that the biggest way Christians would steal is to actually steal from God and then we make excuses about it. I mean, if you don't believe me, there's excuses, just type tithe on YouTube. You'll be shocked. Make it, how crazy is that? I started thinking, why? Why would we do this? I think there's a few things. One is lack of contentment. We're living in a world that says more, get more, more, more upgrade, better, faster. The new iPhone's coming out. It's 0.2% better.

You need it. You need it. And we keep taking the bait, don't we? Really, I think in a lot of ways, it's a contentment problem. Contentment's just that daily decision to trust that God is good, He's given you everything you have, that it's enough for today and that He's in charge and He knows tomorrow, He lives in tomorrow, you don't. And that He'll give you what you need for tomorrow, too. But we keep buying it. We keep believing the next thing. I'm gonna get there, I'm gonna get the next thing, the next pay raise, the next, and then I'll be good. And then we work and we get there and we're the same. Contentment. Second thing, I think is lack of trust in God's provision. I mean, think about Jesus' words, Matthew six, don't be anxious saying what shall we eat? What shall we drink or what shall we wear? The cover so much, doesn't it? But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things that be added to you, Philippians four. My God will supply every need, every need of yours, according to His riches and glory in Christ Jesus. Do we really trust God in His ability to provide? See, at the very core of robbing God, of stealing, no matter what the stealing looks like, it's really kind of the same message regardless of what the stealing looks like. The message is basically, hmm, I'm not sure God can provide or God will provide or God wants to provide. So I'm going to go take care of this on my own.

What if we just trusted God? What if we didn't need a bigger income but a bigger view of our God? A bigger trust in our God. And then last is just dishonesty in small things. Jesus said those who are very faithful and very little things would be faithful in much, and those who are unfaithful in little things would be unfaithful and dishonest in much. Dishonesty in small things. We focus so much on the big stuff, don't we? We don't think about like going to Chipotle and ordering a water cup but then filling it with soda. We think, that's a small thing. It is a small thing but Jesus puts enormous weight on that small thing. We don't think anything about our taxes and how we're doing our taxes. This is just what you do. It's just kind of the American way. You just kind of cheat a little bit, bend those numbers a little bit, turn in a little bit more receipts, say that you got them even though you don't. It's a small thing. It might be a small thing but I'm telling you Jesus puts big, big weight on that small thing because it's an integrity test. They're not minor infractions to God, they're integrity tests. And God has literally said the way you handle those small things and that big weight. There's a real strong correlation to how you'll handle bigger things with a lot of weight. He's never going to entrust more to somebody that's just not being very trustworthy with less. Your integrity is not defined by what you do when all the stakes are high and everybody's watching you right. It's defined by what you do when it feels small and insignificant and there's nobody watching. How can we actually live with integrity? Don't you love when God's word is just like I got a three-point plan for you right here, buddy. Like sometimes the word is so pragmatic and practical, right? Ephesians 4, let the thief. Oh, so we're studying. You shall not steal. God says, let the thief no longer steal. Number one. But rather let him labor doing honest work with his own hands.

Number two, so that he may have something to share with those in need. Number three, he says stop taking, start working, start giving. Stop taking, start working, start giving. Stop stealing. Like if you're cutting corners, all those things that aren't super obvious. Maybe it's taking something that's not yours. It's time from work, it's credit, it's someone's reputation, whatever it is. Stop. Repent. Stop. Trust God today. Stop taking. Stop stealing. And then second, start working. Start working. You have night of worship tonight, but tomorrow you have a work day full of worship. We work unto the Lord. Our work is worship. It is worship. Let's not forget that. Christians should be the hardest workers, the most honest business partners. Christians should build the best businesses in all the world. Why? Because we represent our God in that business place. And then last, and I really believe this is the one God sent me for some of you to hear today. Begin to trust God with the tithe. Just rip the band-aid off and trust God with it today. We have a Bible verse for that, by the way. Literally have a Bible. I always love when you have a Bible verse for something, right?

Here I'll read the rest of Malachi 3. Bring the full tithe. So I say rip the band-aid off, not. Don't go, okay, well if it's 10% more work my way up, I'm gonna start at 3%. That just means you're robbing God a little bit less. You're still robbing him though. I'm saying rip the band-aid off and really trust God. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse. That there may be food in my house and thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of Hosts. This is a Pepsi challenge verse of the Bible. There's no other verse in the Bible where God's like, I dare you to test me. I double dog dare you. This is the only place in the whole Bible. God's like, test me. Try it. I dare you. Rip the band-aid off, says the Lord of Hosts. See if I won't open the windows of heaven for you and pour down a blessing until there's no more need. I'm interested in that. Only place in the Bible that God's like, test me. And if you won't test him in this, can I just be honest with you for a second about what that represents? It is not a budget issue. It is a trust issue. It's a trust issue. Do you really trust the Lord? Do you trust that he's good? Or are you holding so tightly because, if you're being totally honest, in the depths of your soul, you don't really know.

You don't really know if he would get you through it. God's saying, this is the test. Let go. I got you. We don't give so we can get something. We don't give so we can get a Mercedes, and a mansion, and a million dollars, that's not what the word says. Yet somehow when we give and when we trust God fully, just like any area of life, any area of obedience, what does it do? It opens up blessing in our life. Why? Because now we're living the way God has commanded us to live. Isn't it funny? You swap out some other issue, and suddenly it makes sense. But you go to tithing, and suddenly people get all squarely with it. God's actually saying, trust me. It's a declaration that you trust the God who owns it all, and who has said, I got you. I got you. And on the other side of that, I promise you, when you truly believe God, you're a provider, and you actually just trust Him to come through. You stop like grasping for things, and it just-- it even helps you breathe better, if I'm being honest. And you just start giving, and you start seeing how God moves, because you realize I'll never out give a God that owns everything.

It'll never happen. You shall not steal. You shall not steal. You know what the best news about the gospel is? It transforms us, right? Transforms anybody, anywhere. But the gospel transforms thieves. I was thinking after the first service, two most famous thieves in the Bible. We don't even know their names, but they were hanging on those other crosses on the sides of the cross of Jesus Christ, right? You probably know the story. One of them just spits at Jesus, and there's no repentance. Nothing changes in his heart. He pushes away Jesus. But then the other guy says, will you remember me in heaven today? And Jesus says, yep, I won't just remember you there. I'll see you there. But I thought of the picture of those crosses and these two guys, they broke this exact command. You shall not steal. And it must have been pretty bad. There's some indication that they may have been murderers, so the thing they stole was life itself, right? But whatever it was, they stole. They're being crucified. So think of the picture.

Here you have Jesus, only perfect human being that ever lived, never took a single thing that wasn't his, hanging between these two thieves that took things that weren't theirs. It gets worse. Then they strip Jesus, the only one who never stole anything of all of his things. Strip his clothes off, rip his dignity away from him, and even take his life. He was taking the punishment in that moment that belonged to those two thieves. Jesus said he came to seek and save the lost. Romans tells us that God shows His love for us in this, why we were still sinners, why we were still thieves, why we were still robbing God. Christ died for us. That's the good news, isn't it? Would you bear ahead and close your eyes? Jesus, thank you that you have come and you have radically rescued us? We all need rescue. If you're here today and you've never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, you've been holding on to your life, saying it's mine. The gospel is that you would release that, that you would surrender your life. All you have, all you are to Jesus Christ, that you would allow Him to be your Lord and your leader. Not just your Savior to get you into heaven, but your King right here, right now,

that His word and His ways, His principles and precepts, would inform how you think and how you live and how you respond. That you would call out the name of Jesus. The Bible tells us if we will cry out with our mouths, that Jesus Christ is Lord publicly and believe in our heart, that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. That's justification, you'll be saved. Salvation, you'll have a brand new home in heaven. And then instantaneously, something else happens, it's called sanctification. You get to start the lifelong process of being a disciple of Jesus Christ, of learning what it means to follow Jesus day after day. And you allow that to get into every nook and every cranny in your life, even the hard things. That's what it means to truly follow Christ. If you're ready to do that today and surrender to Him, we'd love to just pray with you out loud as you cry out to Jesus today. Can we all pray together? Heavenly Father, I surrender. Thank you for your blood, thank you for your cross and for your resurrection. I repent from my sin, would you change me Jesus? Use me for your glory Jesus.
