All right, hello, City First, how's everybody doing today? Welcome to church. Wanna say welcome to all of our locations, Cape Coral, Janesville, God Behind Bars, everybody on the Pando app and everybody at City First, anywhere, we love you guys very much. Speaking of God Behind Bars, a couple of years ago, I had the honor of traveling to our God Behind Bars location at the Hardy Correctional Center in Florida, and I wanted to preach in person because every week, the guys there see me on the screen, and I thought, you know, I wanna be there in person, I wanna meet our City First church family, and so it was gonna be just a special moment, and I went there and I went through the security checkpoints and went into the yard, and when I got into the yard, there was a whole group of City First guys there that we were meeting for the very first time in person, and we're hugging each other and high-fiving and just having a great time, and then, it was kind of funny, a couple of them kind of took me aside, and one of them goes, hey, man, I wanna let you know this, you look bigger on TV. And the other guy goes, yeah, I thought you were like 6'2 or something, you know? And then this other guy was giving me a hard time, he goes, yeah, he goes, you look a lot more jacked on the screen than what you do in real life. I started to feel a little insecure, and I said, well, listen, this is the deal, you don't know this,

but I said, the videography team in Rockford, what they do is I have them use the Chris Helmsworth filter on the post-production, and it looks something like this, right here, this is, I mean, that looks pretty accurate, right, Jen? Just nod, just nod, yes. I started to think about it, you know, and actually, the camera does for me what Jesus does for those that follow him. Follow me on this, he makes us look bigger and better than we really are, right? He helps us to stand taller and to be stronger than we could ever be on our own, which is why we're in this series called The Win Within. What we're doing this month, kicking off 2026, with this idea of Jesus winning inside of our hearts, that win within gives us the ability to be victorious in life, and honestly, he makes us look better than who we really are, right? That Jesus in us makes us stronger, makes us stand taller. In fact, you know what, today we're gonna talk about how to stand up and stand out in a culture that is bowing to all kinds of things, and we're in this study of the Old Testament book of Daniel. Now, Daniel is a story that's in the Old Testament. I would highly suggest y'all read it at some point. It's a great story, and you know what? Honestly, today, I'm gonna speak a message that I spoke a couple years ago at one of our conferences, and when I spoke it, since then, out of any message

that I have spoken at one of our conferences and haven't spoken on a Sunday morning, I've had more people request that I would speak this message on a Sunday morning than any other message. So I thought, well, you know what? The message is about Daniel and some of his friends. I'm like, it works out perfect. Lisa kicked us off last week on this Win Within series and talking about Daniel. Daniel and some of his friends lived approximately 2,600 years ago in the city of Jerusalem, and at the age of 17, Daniel, his city, Jerusalem, was invaded by a foreign nation called Babylon, and the king of Babylon, his name was Nebuchadnezzar, conquered the city, and the Bible says this in Daniel chapter one, and we pick up here in the story. Then the king ordered Ashpenaz, chief of his court officials to bring into the king's service some of the Israelites. He was to teach them the language and literature of the Babylonians. The king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from the king's table, and they were to be trained for three years. Three years after that, they were to enter into the king's service. Now, I wanna just be very clear here and blunt as to what is taking place. Babylon invades Jerusalem, conquers it, and literally abducts people. They were not going to Babylon, these Israelites,

under their own free will. They were taken captive. They were abducted, and they were taken from their homeland many, many miles away to the country of Babylon. Many theologians, if you. Read the book of Daniel. Many Bible scholars will say there are great similarities between what happened with Daniel and his friends and what is going on even right now in the world. And I will tell you how they connect the dots. They connect the dots this way. Like Daniel, we as followers of Jesus, we are in exile in a pagan culture. This is not our homeland. How many of you know this world is not our home? I'm not trying to be weird by that. If you're here for the first time, you're like going, wow, that's kind of strange. No, the Bible is very clear that guess what? As followers of Jesus, heaven will be our home someday. Until then, for this 80, 90, 100 years, we're passing through a culture that is not our culture. We don't embrace it. We don't find similarity with it. We live in it, but we are not of it. Does that make sense? And so in many ways, you and I can say we're kind of living in Babylon, just like Daniel was. Daniel was forced to learn the Babylonian way of life, learn the language that was in his language and a value system that he disagreed with. I love what the message version, the paraphrase says about this verse, where it talks about Daniel being taught for three years. Basically, the message uses this word. They were indoctrinated, indoctrinated. The word indoctrination means this. It means brainwashing. So in other words, what is going on here is the Babylonians are trying to brainwash these young Israelite men to try to teach them a new worldview, to try to teach them a new way of thinking, not the way that they were brought up. And when I read this, when I read this in Daniel, I cannot help but think that the enemy of this world, the enemy of our soul is doing the same thing with many people in culture today. Indoctrinating them, brainwashing them into thinking a certain way of living or a certain worldview is right when God has designed us to live a different way. I mean, look at culture right now. Look at what's going on in the world. This world is screwed up, ladies and gentlemen. People are broken. There's anger, there's frustration, there's hurt. There's all of these things. It reminds me of a verse in the book of Romans, which is in the New Testament, and it says this, because of sin, creation, meaning you and I,

was subjected to frustration and futility. If you had to look and say, Jeremy, give me two words that describe culture right now. Frustration, futility. The enemy has tried to brainwash an entire culture into living a life that has resulted in heaviness, depression, anger, anxiety, confusion, and chasing after things that he says, the enemy says will bring happiness, but only leaves you wanting more, feeling empty. Indoctrination, indoctrination. Daniel and his friends, they're forced to listen to the enemy's messaging day after day after day. And on top of that, once these young Israelite young adults are brought into Babylon, they are given new Babylonian names. They're no longer called the names that they were born with, their Hebrew names. Instead, they're given new names. And this is really interesting. It says in Daniel chapter one, verse seven, the chief official gave them new names to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar, to Hananiah, Shadrach, to Mishael, Meshach, and to Azariah, Abednego. Now you guys know about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. You probably, if you grew up in church or went to Sunday school or whatever else, you heard about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. That wasn't their real names. Those were their Babylonian names. And what happens is this, the Babylonians took away their real Hebrew names and gave them names that were linked to Babylonian pagan gods. Now these new names had dark and sinister agendas attached to them. I'm going to teach you something today that I guarantee you, you didn't learn in Sunday school. And the reason you didn't learn it in Sunday school is because it would have been way too heavy and dark for the age that you were at. But today I want to talk about what is behind Belteshazzar, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. These new names were meant to cause confusion and to remove these young men's original identities. So let me give you an example. Here's the original name, the Hebrew name, Daniel. If you translate To translate Daniel, it means this, God is my judge. In other words, God is full of justice. God is a good God, he's a fair God. So every time that Daniel, his name was called or mentioned to him, he was hearing, God is my judge. But now he's been given in Babylon a new name, Belteshazzar. What does it mean? It means this, lady, protect the king.

Now, wait a minute, look at that for a moment. Lady, protect the king. The Babylonians purposely gave him as a male, a feminine name. That would be the equivalent of me being taken into exile. Instead of my name being Jeremy, it is now Megan. They did this on purpose to create confusion. If you study pagan cultures going way back thousands of years, I mean, you can go Greek, you can go Roman, you can go Assyrian, you could go Babylonian, you could go Egyptian, you could go any of these. The one thing that definitely all of them have in common is there's confusion surrounding gender, always. And the Babylonians wanted to confuse Daniel. And they wanted to create an insecurity and a loss of identity. And the enemy is doing the exact same thing today. He's trying to create confusion, which actually creates heartache. My heart goes out to those that have a gender dysphoria. I have the privilege as a pastor for many people to confide in me confidentially. And many people will come to me and they will say they are very confused about who God has created them to be. And they hear what TikTok is saying, they hear what Instagram is saying, they hear what Hollywood is saying, and yet it doesn't quite resonate with them. They hear about culture and there's all this swirl

and all this confusion, and they want truth. And I would just say this, if you are experiencing that confusion or dysphoria, please talk to somebody, number one, that has a faith worldview, and number two, someone that can help you. Don't allow TikTok to be your shepherd. Don't allow Hollywood to be your guide. Daniel and his friends are given these new names. And here's another one, Hananiah. The word Hananiah, that name in the Hebrew means God is gracious. Wouldn't that be a great name? Every time somebody calls your name, it's like saying God's gracious towards you. God has grace towards you. God is just so loving that he just gives you grace, amazing grace, isn't that amazing? Well, now his name is being changed to Shadrach. Shadrach in Babylonian terms means this, I am very fearful of God. Do you see the enemy's agenda here? See, you didn't learn this in Sunday school. But here, now the Babylonians are trying to speak fear over this man. They're saying every time that they say Shadrach, it is I am very fearful, I am very fearful. Instead of a God that's gracious, now what is being spoken over him is fear and anxiety, fear and anxiety, and the enemy is doing that

in spades right now in our culture. The enemy is trying to give many of us a new identity, an identity of fear. That you live literally with controlling thoughts of paranoia of a future that is less than what you want it to be. God does not want you to live this way. The almighty God of the universe, I wanna tell you, this is more than me just being a pastor and trying to hype you up. The God of the universe loves you. He cares about you. He is on your side because you have chosen him. If God is for you, who can be against you? The God of the universe loves you. And yet the enemy is trying to speak over many of us anxiety and fear, anxiety and fear. I declare, I believe 2026 is gonna be the year where many of us that have been controlled by anxiety and fear will stand tall and no longer bow to the God and the spirit of this world, which is fear, but rather instead to say, God is with me. Therefore, who can be against me? My confidence is not in myself, but in the savior. The enemy is trying to brainwash us. us to feel like there's no hope in the future. Well, how about Mishael? Well, that word, that name in the Hebrew means who is what God is. Now, let me give you a little bit of a better

English translation of that so we can understand it. Who is like our God? That's what it means, who is like our God? Could you imagine that every day as someone is calling out his name, he is hearing, who's like our God? Who's like our God? Well, now he's been given the name Mishach. What does Mishach mean? I am of little account. You see what the enemy is doing here? The enemy is trying to speak over him. You aren't worth anything. You are of little account. Some of us in the room, the enemy has been trying to give us that name. He's been trying to say, you don't have value. God doesn't love you. Oh, God loves that person. God doesn't love you. God will answer their prayers. He doesn't even pay attention to yours. Oh, God, God is angry with you. You have no value, and if you take on that name and that identity, then you might live less than, you might live destructive, you might be full of shame. Well, I'm here to speak back to that name and that spirit instead to say, no, you are of infinite value to our God, that God loves you. In fact, the Bible says this. Let me just talk about what the Bible says.

So in other words, what God's word is over you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, it says in Psalm. You are God's masterpiece, it says in Ephesians. That you know what, you are a child and an heir of God, it says in Romans in the book of John. That you are chosen. You are chosen, it says in 1 Peter and Isaiah. And nothing can separate you from God's love, it says in the book of Romans. Come on, some of you, let's put our hands together for that, first of all. Because that's the truth. Some of you need to take a picture of this with your smartphone, and here's the reason why. Some of you battle this worth thing. Some of you battle this less than thing. And every time you do, I want you to pull up this picture, I want you to look up these scriptures, I want you to read these scriptures over your life. Because you have great worth, great worth. Azariah, the last one here, God is a helper. That's what it means, God is a helper. Could you imagine, every time that his name is being called, it's like God's helping you, God's helping you, God's helping you, now it's a bend to go. What does that Babylonian name mean? It means servant of Nebo, which was a Babylonian god. In other words, the enemy was, instead of saying, God is helping you, now the enemy is saying, no, you are servant.

You are less than. You have no power. You do not have the ability to overcome. God has abandoned you. You see, no, no, I say this, God is my helper. I am not powerless because the almighty God's power is in me, and the enemy would want you to think that God can't help you. Wherever you're at right now, the circumstance you're in, the enemy wants to speak over you that you're stuck, that you are enslaved to the problems, the struggles, the addictions, the issues you currently are facing. You will never break free of them. That's what the enemy wants to speak over you. And instead, I wanna speak over you the original name, no, God is your helper. He is the one that can help you. He's the one that will give you the ability to be more than victorious. So what did these Israelite young men do? What did they do? Well, they decided to stand tall in a culture that was bowing to all of these lies. They decided that they were gonna do what culture was doing. They were gonna do what God has spoken to them to do. And the Babylonian king decides that he's going to build a statue. This is not just any statue. This is not like a statue that's like 10 feet tall

or something like that. The Bible says that he builds a statue 90 feet tall, which is nine stories. 90 feet tall, laden with gold. In other words, it was made of gold, and the king put out a command that said, if someone does not bow down to this statue, they will be thrown into a fiery furnace to die. So here are our friends, these Israelites, these Hebrew youth, and they have a decision to make. They have to decide whether or not they are going to do like everybody else. and bow down to the statue, or if they are going to stand tall and face the consequences. They had to make a decision. In other words, I'd say it this way. Will they stand for God, or will they bow to what everyone else in culture was worshiping? Keep that up there a moment. That's our decision today in 2026 also. Are we going to stand for God, or are we going to bow to everything that everyone else in culture is worshiping? Listen, don't get it wrong. Everyone worships something. Some people are like, well, I'm not religious. Yes, you are. We are people that follow something. We are people that look to something for our source, or to complete us, or to give us an identity, or for help. In culture, everybody worships something. Some people in our culture worship pleasure. They feel like that's what will get them through. Some people worship sex. Some people worship popularity. Some people worship substances. Some people worship money. Some people worship politics. By the way, a heck of a lot of Americans do. Some of us worship self. But in culture, there's people worshiping all kinds of things, looking to those things to give them safety, to give them happiness, to be their source. The question is, in our culture today, the same question that Daniel, Shadrach, and Meshach, and Abednego had. Will we stand for God, or will we bow to these things? Some leaders in Babylon decided to come and nark on these Hebrew young men, because these men decided not to bow. It says in Daniel chapter 3, verse 12, it says, they said, but there are some Jews, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,

they pay no attention to you, king, your majesty. They refuse to serve your gods, and do not worship the gold statue you have set up. They decided they're not going to bow. So what is king Nebuchadnezzar's response to this? We find out in verse 19. He says this, king Nebuchadnezzar was so furious with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that his face became distorted with rage. I want to point that out for a moment. Distorted with rage. He was so offended. He was so enraged. He was so furious that these three men decided they would not bow down to his statue, that it literally contorted his facial expressions, and I see this as a demonic rage at that moment. Now, I will say this. Have you noticed in our culture, when our culture says, this is what you should believe, and this is what you should do, and if people decide not to do it, do you see the inordinate amount of rage that goes against those people that will not conform? I mean, there's no more civil discourse. There's no more, let's agree to disagree. No, no, no, no. There isn't that. Instead, if you don't fall in line, if you don't believe what we believe, we are going to become enraged against you. We will punish you. We will cancel you. We will delete you. We will shame you. We will speak out against you. We don't even have a morality anymore. We're just going to go after you. Do you notice this? Well, can I tell you, that is the same spirit that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego confronted thousands of years ago through Nebuchadnezzar. When they stood and did not bow, there was a spirit of anger that came through that man. Well, I'll tell you now, if you don't bow, there can be a spirit of rage that comes against you. The Bible says that the king commanded that the furnace be heated seven times hotter than usual. Then he ordered some of the strongest men of his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. So they tied them up and threw them into the furnace fully dressed in their pants, turbans, robes, and other garments. And because the king, in his anger, had demanded such a hot fire in the furnace, the flames killed the soldiers. as they threw the three men in. So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, securely tied, fell into the roaring flames. They're being punished. And I say this as your pastor, not because, I know today's a little intense, and that's okay.

There's a reason why, when I spoke this a couple years ago, that there are many people that attended that conference that said, you have to say this on a Sunday morning. You have to preach this, because this is where culture is at. And my point is this, is that when you stand for Jesus, when you decide to not bow down to all the things that culture is worshiping, whether it's school, at work, or maybe even in your family, when you stand tall for Jesus, it may cost you something. You may lose friends. You may be made fun of. You may have people get angry at you and challenge you. There may be a season of loneliness because it feels like you're standing alone. Not everyone liked Jesus. And if not everyone liked Jesus, who was way more loving and was perfect, guess what? They are not gonna like you or I either. And I'm not trying to make this an us-them kind of conversation. Not at all. The Bible's very clear. We're to love our enemies. But loving our enemies doesn't mean that they love us back.

And it doesn't mean that they always treat us kindly and fairly, and it doesn't mean that they have rationale and common sense. And it doesn't mean that also they will not make you pay. And when they do make you pay, realize this, it's not that person. It's the spirit of this age through that person. The spirit of the enemy is enraged that you had the audacity to stand for Jesus. How dare you? The spirit of this age would say. So what happens to our friends? Well, the Bible says this, that in verse 25, look, Nebuchadnezzar shouted, I see four men unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed. And the fourth looks like a God. Then Nebuchadnezzar came as close as he could to the door of the flaming furnace and shouted, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, which means he knew their names, all right? The enemy knows your name, all right? He says this, he says, servants of the most high God. In other words, here's Nebuchadnezzar, a pagan king, who is punishing these men and then seeing this miracle. And he's like, okay, I give up. Your God is the real God. He says, come on out. Come here. So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stepped out of the fire.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stepped out of the fire. Then the high officers, the officials, the governors, and the advisors crowded around them. Not a hair on their heads was cinched and their clothing not scorched. They didn't even smell like smoke. Many theologians believe that that fourth man in the fire, that that was a manifestation in the Old Testament of the person of Jesus, that that was Jesus himself, that was in there in the fire. You know, Jesus will not abandon you when you come under fire. When you take a stand, and sometimes we don't wanna take a stand because we care, you know, we don't want people to think less of us, or we don't want people to be angry with us, or we don't wanna put up with whatever form of frustration they put towards us or anger. Let me tell you something. When you stand up, God stands with you. Our society is bowing to everything. Like I literally watch the news, I look online, I see social media, and I'm like, we aren't even thinking anymore with rationale or common sense. Like we're bowing to anything and everything that we think is important or will make us happy or make our life full of significance. And here's the question, Christ follower.

Will you stand in the midst of all of this bowing? Will you stand for Jesus? When culture bows to compromise, will you stand for righteousness? When culture bows to fear and anxiety, will you stand in the hope of Jesus? Will you stand in God's conviction? Will you stand when culture bows to porn and to drugs and to violence and to killing and to money and to pleasure seeking? And will you say, no, no, I stand for purity and holiness and what is right. I will stand. in the midst of everything that's going on. Will you do it? Courage. Listen to me. Courage looks strange in a culture of compromise. When you refuse to bow, God refuses to let you fall. He stands with you in the fire. Do you understand that? Says in Daniel, as we close chapter three, then Nebuchadnezzar says praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. They defied the king's command, meaning his command, and were willing to die rather than to serve or worship any God except their own God. There is no other God who can rescue like this. There's no other God, he says. Hands down.

Listen to me, standing out isn't a weakness, it's a witness. In other words, when you stand and you don't worship at all of the little gods of this culture, instead you stand for the one and only God. Listen, you're telling people, you're showing them that God is real. They see something in you that's different. Even those that push back on you, even those that make fun of you, even those that malign you, they're watching you. They're watching you. When the world says bend, blend in, excuse me, God says stand out. The world needs us. He doesn't need us to be, God doesn't need us to be a mirror of culture. God needs us to be a mirror of God's word and of Jesus's character. He needs us to live different. That's the thing. When you live different, you stand out. You stick out like a sore thumb. The world doesn't need you to blend in or bow. The world needs a witness, a witness for what real truth is. The world needs us to stand tall. Stand tall. So I'm gonna ask us to bow our heads and close our eyes. I want us to pray that God's word

is what God's word is. And I want us to pray that God would give us the courage in 2026 to not be jerks for Jesus. That's not what I'm saying. I'm not saying to be obnoxious, but I'm saying that we stand with convictions. We stand with the principles and the commands of God's word living in our life. Doesn't mean we're perfect. We're gonna screw up from time to time. In a world that's bowing and we're willing to face the consequences knowing that Jesus is with us in the fire. Heavenly Father, I pray give City First courage. God, help us to have a backbone, a spine, spiritually speaking, at work, at school, in our neighborhoods, in our families, to be a standard, not a reflection of the compromise going on around us. God, may we be people who are willing to speak when it's right to speak. May we be willing to live out righteousness in the midst of such compromise and sin. And God, I pray that we would do it with a humility, not attention towards us. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego weren't trying to get the attention, but rather their standing gave you, God, all of the attention. So when we stand, may you, Jesus, get all of the glory.

May people around us at work, at school, in our neighborhoods say, the God that they serve is the real God. And there's a hunger to serve that God also. So Lord, I pray that you would give us courage, give us discernment, give us wisdom, give us the ability to stand tall. With every head bowed and every eye closed, this is where we're gonna end. It's a little unorthodox. But if you say, you know what? In 2026, that's your desire. It doesn't mean you're gonna be perfect. It doesn't mean that you're not gonna mess up. But my point is this, your heart's desire is that you wanna be a person that stands. You wanna be a person that stands for Jesus. You don't wanna be a person that bows down to the idols of this culture or the ways or the worldview of this culture. You wanna be a person that stands. Even in the face of some adversity, realizing that Jesus is with you in those heated, fiery moments, that he will stand with you. me. I want to stand. Well, then this is what I'm going to have us do. It's a way of saying, God, you're seeing us make this commitment. I want us to physically right now at every location, if you say, I want to stand for Jesus in 2026, then physically stand to your feet right now. And you're saying, God, this is me. I'm willing to stand. I'm not saying I'm going to be perfect, but I'm willing to stand. I'm willing to do it, even when it's tough.

And God, give us the courage and the strength. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus. And if you couldn't stand no judgmentalness in that, that is fine. But let's just do this. If you didn't stand, let's all stand right now. And let's just take a moment. God, you see us. We're saying we want to stand. I'm standing here on the stage. There are people standing in auditoriums. There are people standing in living rooms and God behind bars. And Lord, you see us doing this physical act of standing. Now, God, give us the strength to do it spiritually. Give us the strength to do it every day, even when it's hard. And may the love of Jesus radiate from our life as we stand with a conviction for you and your word in Jesus name. And everybody said, amen, amen, amen. Come on, guys. Was that not a timely and needed message? I don't know. Maybe after hearing that message, you might be thinking to yourself, man, it's time that you went all in for Jesus. What could your life look like if you allowed him to steer and lead you? If you're in that place right now and you're thinking that, I would love to invite you to take part of what we're about to do next. And that's taking a chance to make Jesus the leader and the savior of your life. It's very simple. You're not joining a church or anything like that, but what you're doing is you're declaring out loud that your life belongs to Jesus and that you want him to lead you. If you would like to make that decision today, I want you to join me with prayer. Repeat this prayer after me. Dear Lord, I know that I've made mistakes and I need your forgiveness. I believe that you died for my sins. I now invite you to be the leader and forgiver of my life. And in Jesus name, amen. Come on, that's probably the biggest decision that you could ever make in your life. And I want you to know that your City First family is proud of you and we're here with you. There's two things real quick. The first thing is do not keep this decision to yourself. Please let someone know. Tell a friend or a family member or a trusted co-worker, even someone, let them know about the decision you just made.
