The Trinity Is a Revelation, Not a Riddle

Hey, we're Todd and Julie Mullins, Senior Pastors here at Christ Fellowship Church, and we're so glad that you're tuning in for service today. Yeah, Christ Fellowship is one church that meets in lots of different locations, including right here with you. Yeah, and our prayer for you today is that you would sense God's love for you. See, I don't personally know all that you're going through today and what you're up against, but God does. And He hears your prayers, and He knows your name, and He's right here for you today as you call out to Him. Yeah, thanks again for joining with us today. We love you, and we're praying for you. God wants to exceed your expectations this year. What are you expecting God to do this year in your life? Those who are planted in the house of the Lord will flourish. We are a church for the one who is lost, that they will be found, and they will find their purpose in Jesus. The one who gave it all so that we could experience life and life to the full. God is more in store than you have in mind, and I believe so much more that it's going to blow your mind. Come on, let's stand up. This is your Father's house today. Come on, sing with us. Yahweh. Who gets the glory and praise? Nobody but Jesus. Who rescued me from that grave? He did. He did. Yahweh. Yahweh. Who gets the glory and praise? Nobody but Him. This is our God. This is who He is. He loves us. This is our God. This is what He does. He saves us. He bore the cross, beat the grave, and rose again. This is our God, King Jesus. He bore the cross, beat the grave, and rose again. This is our God, King Jesus. Well, welcome home, Christ Fellowship. Welcome to church. How many of you know that is good news for us today? I'm reminded of Romans, chapter 10, verse 9. Actually, he says, the Word of God is near. That means anywhere where we can right now proclaim the gospel of the Lord. That Jesus came, He died, He rose again. That many would know Him and have eternal life. Hey, the Word of God, it is near. Today is the day of salvation. Do you believe it today? Amen. I love it. And then that anyone, anyone who calls on the palm of the name of the Lord will be saved.

We believe it today. Hey, if you're new with us today, if you just came in, maybe someone invited you to service today, or maybe you're watching us online. We're just so glad that you came into this place. This is your invitation from the outset. You're not an outsider. You're an insider today. You are part of the family of believers. And today we are inviting you to sing with us and lean into God's Word. We are leaning into the foundations of our faith. And so from the outset right here, let me just pray over our service. And we're going to continue making these declarations. There is power in what you declare. Amen. God, today we declare that you are here in this place, that salvation is in this place, where the Word of God is near, there is salvation. And so today we set our expectation on you, that you would raise our faith, raise our eyes, and that you would do the impossible in this place. In Jesus' name. Amen. Come on, let's make some powerful declarations in this house today. In Jesus' name. Through His Holy Spirit. I believe in God our Father. I believe in Christ the Son. I believe in the Holy Spirit. Our God is three in one. I believe in the resurrection. That we will rise again. For I believe in the name of Jesus. Oh, I believe in your name. Your name, your name. He's our judge and our defender today. Our judge and our defender, suffered and crucified.

Forgiveness is in you. Oh, thank God. Descended into darkness. You rose in glorious light. Forever seated high. I believe in God our Father. I believe in Christ the Son. ♪ Yes, we praise forever to the King of Kings ♪ Can I tell you something today? What we're singing about, especially over the last two songs, is the church of Jesus Christ. Jesus, He is the head. He is the King of everything. But can I tell you today, this place, there's something about this place. There's nothing like this place anywhere on planet Earth. And the Bible would actually say this in Ephesians 4. It says that the church is not peripheral or secondary to the world, but the world is secondary to the church. There is nothing like the people of God gathering here. This is the place that I encountered Jesus for the first time. My life was falling apart, but everything changed in a moment there in His presence. And can I tell you, God can do the same thing in your life today, no matter what you're facing, no matter what you're walking through. That is why the church exists. And Jesus is worthy of all of our praise today. So come on, church. I feel like we gotta give Jesus the praise that He's due. He's worthy today. I love it. Man, no matter if you're in the room with us

or watching online, we're so glad that you are here today. And we are in this series, Reconstructing Our Faith. So excited to have Coach Tom in the house with us. He's about to bring the Word. It's gonna be incredible. I wanna encourage you, whether you're here or watching online, to lean in, get ready. It's gonna be an incredible time. But hey, why don't you turn to one or two people around you, give them a high five, shake their hands, and you can grab their seat today. The Creed, a shared statement or confession of the core beliefs of the Christian faith rooted in scripture and passed down through generations. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. He was born of the Virgin Mary, and died under the power of Pontius Pilate. He was crucified, died, and was separated. In accordance with the scriptures, He was raised from the dead. He ascended to heaven. To the Creator, to the Lord, to Satan, to the Father, and to God. From there, He will come to seek the living and the dead. To the Son of Man, to the Holy Spirit. I believe in the Holy Spirit. In the Holy Christian Church. In Communion. In the resurrection.

In the resurrection of the body. In life everlasting. Amen. Come on, church. Wow, I love that. Well, welcome everyone joining us online. Everyone joining us on all of our campuses. And a special shout out to the men and women in uniform serving our great nation around the world. We love you. As we were singing this morning, I love our songs we were singing, but there was an old hymn that came back to my mind, and I'd actually like to sing it. Stephen, where are you? Stephen, come out here. I hope you remember this song, son. If you don't, I'm going to coach you up. But I grew up, and we would sing hymns in our church. The hymns really reinforced the creed, the doctrines of the church. And I just love them. But there was one that came to mind this morning about holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty. Now, if you know this, sing it with us. Memphis, Okeechobee, I know you all know it, every verse of it. Come on, let's go. We're going to sing this together. I don't know if I can get on pitch. I invite Cooper up here to help us. Hit the organ, baby. Come on, hit the organ. Here we go. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.

Early in the morning, our song shall rise to Thee. Only Thouly are holy. There's a form on another verity. God in three persons, blessed Trinity. God in three persons, come on. God in three persons, blessed Trinity. Give it up for Stephen. Come on, baby. Thank you. I love you, son. I love your appreciation. Come on. God in three persons, blessed Trinity. How do we, with our limited, finite minds, begin to comprehend or even explain the Trinity, the infinite, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit? I wrote this down in preparation for teaching on the Trinity today, and by the way, I want you to know, teaching on the Trinity is above my pay grade. This is a topic that theologians have been debating and discussing from the beginning of the first century till now. I wrote this down, and I want it on the screens because it's so important. The doctrine of the Trinity is not merely a theological concept to explain God. Here it is. It's a revelation of how God loves us, desires to restore us, and live with us every day. That is truly who the Trinity is. We've been quoting the Apostles' Creed.

I believe in God the Father, the Lord God Almighty, and Christ his Son, and that of the Holy Spirit, three in one. And we make that declaration because we know they're working in perfect unity from our creation to our redemption. to our transformation to what God ordained us to be. And by the way, the Trinity has been working together from the beginning of time. And how in the world we can't get our minds around a God who spoke the worlds into order, waved his hand and planets filled the starry skies, and the Spirit hovered over the waters. And in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, and the Word became flesh. Jesus they're talking about. So we see in creation, God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. All through the Word of God, the Trinity manifests itself as this one living true God that's reflected in our Father and his love for us. Think about it. The Father's love for us, the Son who redeems us, and the Holy Spirit who empowers us. That's the Holy Trinity of God. In the New Testament, one of the first pictures we have of the Trinity is found at the baptism of Jesus. And if you'll step back with me in Matthew chapter three, Jesus now at age 30 is ready to start his public ministry. What's the first thing he does? He goes down to the Jordan River

where John the Baptist is baptizing people through repentance to God and baptism as an outward sign of your heart's repentance and turning back to God. John goes to the, he's not to Jordan, Jesus comes to the Jordan to validate John's message. He's saying this is the message, we must repent, we must turn from our old ways and our sins and turn back to God to be restored to him. And this is symbolic of the cleansing that God wants to do inwardly for you when you're stepping into the water to be baptized. And so Jesus, out of obedience, goes. Well, John recognizes who Jesus is. He said, behold, the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. I'm not worthy to even unleash your sandals, let alone baptize you. And Jesus says, John, I've come here to obey my Father and to fulfill his will and to lead by example and to set a path of righteousness for the people. And so he woves in to be baptized. And when he does, here's what the Scripture says, and I love this in the Scripture, in Matthew three. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment, the heavens opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lightning on him. And a voice from heaven said, this is my Son, whom I love, and with him I am well pleased. You see right there the working of the Holy Trinity

in the plan of redemption for mankind. And I love it that the Holy Spirit comes in the form of a dove, lightning on Jesus, declaring, this is my anointed one, and I am empowering and anointing you for the ministry you're about to step into for the next three years, that will lead you to the cross, will lead you to the grave, but will lead you to the resurrection and the salvation of mankind, hallelujah. And then the Father speaks the affirmation over it all. He says, this is my Son, whom I love, and I am well pleased. I love the interaction of all three of them. And I love the fact that our Heavenly Father is a Father who affirms us and loves us. So many people have a wrong concept of who God is. They see him as this distant, eternal being that's sitting there in the judgment seat waiting to judge us. This gives us the true picture of God right here. He's not distant, he's personal, he's engaged. He was right there at the moment that his Son was getting ready to step in and boldly proclaim who he was as the Savior of the world because here's what he did. When Jesus stepped in that water, boom, a death sentence was pronounced on him. When he took that step, there was no turning back from that step. And the Father is saying, I love you, Son.

I'm here with you, Son. I'm here to affirm you, Son. I'm gonna be with you. The Holy Spirit will be with you every step of the way. That's the God we serve. I want you to think about this. When we think about God our Father being a God of love, and I love 1 John 4, 8. It's a very short verse, three words. God. is love, I like it, that's my kind of Bible reading. Donna wants all the deep stuff, long verses, she's just deep, listen, that woman puts on a special tank every morning before she goes into work because she goes so deep. I wear a snorkel, I'm snorkeling around, just doing my best, and this is a snorkel verse, God is love, amen? Amen. Jesus tells a story in Luke 15 about the prodigal son, most of us are familiar with that story, where the son goes to his dad, asks for his inheritance early, which they could in that day, went off, wasted the entire inheritance that he had, found himself in a foreign land, in a famine, and what happens? He's destitute, but he turns and comes back to his father, and the father's waiting for him, and what I love about this image is Jesus is really portraying and telling your story and my story.

We're the ones who walked away from God when sin entered our hearts and lives, and he's been waiting for us to be restored to him, and praise God, and I love the image, the father sees him, he runs to him, first thing he does, he takes his cloak off of himself and covers his son. He covers the shame, he covers the sin, he covers the rebellion, he covers the filth of the world that was still on him, he covers him with his own robe, and then he takes a ring off his finger and puts it on his son's finger, affirming his son's identity. And in his father's arms, he really rediscovers who he is. That's what I love about the story of the prodigal son. You know what, it's our story, because we're all prodigals, sons and daughters. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, but praise God, there's a heavenly father that loves us, that's waiting for us, that when he sees us turn to him, he runs to us, and I wanna tell you something. You will never know who you truly are until you fall into the arms of your heavenly father's love. I've told you this story many times, but it was the turning point of my life. It was 1983, December, we're in Jerusalem for the first time with our family, and we went into the church of the Holy Sepulcher there where they believe that Christ was crucified and they built this mammoth Catholic

and Greek Orthodox church over top of it. Pilgrims were coming from all over the world to stoop down and try to touch the stone where they believe the cross was placed in that Golgotha on Calvary. And I'm there with the family, it's late, we're leaving the next day to come back to the U.S., and I told Donna, take the kids, we're going back to the hotel I wanna stay here for a little while, and I sat there for a while, and in the spirit, God parted a veil and allowed me to see a depth of his love and sacrifice for me through Christ like I had never witnessed before, and I fell into the arms of God's love. And when I did, I no longer saw myself as Coach Mullins. I didn't see myself as dad, husband. I saw myself as a son of the most high God. There's an old song we used to sing called Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine, oh, what a foretaste of glory divine. Perfect submission, perfect delight. I've already forgot all the words, but I know there's one line in there, filled with his goodness, I'm lost in his love. Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine. That day, I was lost in God's love, and when I got lost in his love, it transformed my life. It set my feet on a different path. That day, I became a better husband, a better father, a better leader, a better man,

because I was affirmed who I truly was, because I found that identity in my father's arms, and the heavenly father loves you, his arms are ready to embrace you. When you run to him, he will love and receive you unto himself. So many of us have never had an earthly father's affirmation. I never heard my dad. I can't ever say I love you, son. I can't ever remember him hugging me. Thank God I had a grandfather who hugged me, said he loved me, affirmed me. We all need that affirmation, not only in the physical and in the natural, but boy, we need it in the spiritual, amen? And that's the role of the Father, to affirm you. I was watching the Memorial Golf Tournament last weekend, held up in Columbus, Ohio, and I've had the privilege to be there a few times, and I saw an old familiar sign show back up I haven't seen for a while. Did anybody even notice it? John 316 showed up, did you see it? A guy's holding this big old sign, John 316, he's looking for wherever the camera is, and if it turns red, John 316, you know, he got up there. I was, a funny story, I was actually sitting one night with Jack Nicklaus in his home, we're watching a football game, and a bunch of us were in there,

and somebody at a football game's holding the John 316 sign up. And there's a guy from New York sitting right behind me, and he said, you know, I've always wanted to know, what in the world is John 316? Really? And so I'm sitting in front of him beside Jack, and Jack punches me and said, Tom, tell him what John 316 is. So I turn around and I tell him what John 316 is, God's the love of the world, he's the only begotten son, whoever believes in him, and our prayers shall have everlasting life. I said, that's the message of the gospel. And you know what Jack said? Amen. I got an amen from Jack Nicklaus, come on, baby. And later, I got to talk to this man about what that really meant. God so loved us that he gave. Paul says it this way, why we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Wow. God the Father is a Father who loves us, and is waiting to embrace each one of us. And God the Son. I quoted a verse earlier, but I want to read it again, from John, the Gospel of John. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God,

and the Word became flesh, and made his dwelling among us. Jesus Christ is God. He is the living God. Let me get something straight here. Some people take offense at what John declared in John 14, six and seven, where Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through me. Now some of you say, wait a minute, you mean you're excluding all other religions, and there's no other ways? Hey, Jesus is saying, I am the way, because I and the Father are one. And if you want to be in oneness with the Father, you must come through the oneness of, I have an access to the Father that no one else has, because he and I are one heart, one spirit, one God, one Lord. Think about that. Now there's no one else that's ever even claimed to do that, or be that. But when you look in the Holy Scriptures, Jesus is declaring it. I want you to look at this. He says in John 10, 30, I and the Father are one. Then look what Paul writes in Colossians. For he has rescued us, talking about Jesus' mission, from the dominion of darkness, and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption and the forgiveness of sins.

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. Jesus is the Son of the living God. Jesus is the truth. He is the way. He is the life. He is our pathway back to our relationship with our Heavenly Father. Because Jesus is God, our Lord Almighty, amen? And even, it's really interesting, because when the Father's talking about the Son, he's saying, even on the Mount of Transfiguration, if you remember when Moses and Elijah show up with Jesus, and Peter, James, and John witnessed this. They're going, wow. They weren't there to baptism to hear the voice of God. The disciples all came after that. But now. Once again, the Holy Spirit shows up and a cloud comes down over them and the voice of the Father speaks and said, this is my Son, whom I love and am well pleased. And then he says to Peter, James, and John, listen to him. He has the words of life. Listen to him. Follow him. Pursue him. He is what you want. And then what's interesting is that Jesus is all the time then pointing back to the Father. And what does he say in the Great Commandment?

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. That's what we're called to do. And then the Holy Spirit is working in conjunction with God the Father and God the Son because the Spirit is what is now wooing and drawing us back to the Father's heart through Christ, his Son. It's an amazing thing that I wish I could explain. I can't fully explain it to you. But I know it's real and true because of the impact of each of them for us. And when you think about the love of Christ, I don't know if there's any greater statement that when Jesus agonized in the garden before he was gonna face the cross and he said to the Father, Father, not my will, but thy will be done. I'm submitting to you and I'm gonna go through all this suffering so we can have the plan of salvation completed for mankind. Wow. That's why we have the image of the cross equals love because it is. And in an instant though that in Jesus' final command that he gives that we call the Great Commission to his disciples, he says in Matthew 28, therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them, here we go, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And teaching them to obey everything I have commanded, surely I will be with you always,

even to the very end of the age. And all the Catholics said, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, we love you, Lord, praise God. I know you out there, you come to me, you want me to bless things. So anyways, did you not get that? Come on. And of course, God, the Holy Spirit. Jesus said in John 14, when I will ask the Father and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever. Be with you forever, you have an advocate. You have someone that is in your corner. You have someone that's gonna be with you in every challenge of life. You're gonna have the presence of God with you, the Holy Spirit, the indwelling Spirit. The Holy Spirit not only draws our spirit to the Spirit of God, but seals our spirit to the Spirit of God when we embrace Christ as our personal Savior. And then his Spirit begins to indwell us and live within our spirits. And we become the temple of God. Paul says, you know, the Spirit used to be contained in a physical temple where the Ark of the Covenant that represented God's covenant with the people. And it's your kind of glory, the hovering Spirit hovered over the Ark.

But when Christ died on the cross and the veil was torn, the Spirit of God was released to now take dwelling within the hearts of man. And as we embrace Christ, we have the Holy Spirit, the advocate. And the Bible gives us several wonderful things. The Holy Spirit not only fills us with God's presence, he fills us with wisdom. He will come and lead us into all truth. I like this one, the Holy Spirit fills us with hope, joy, and peace. You know, I've noticed, I love this verse. This is one of my life verses, Romans 15, 13. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust him so that you may overflow with hope by the what? The power of the Holy Spirit. Everywhere we see the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Word, there is right beside it, there's joy and peace. The kingdom of God is what? Righteousness, peace, and joy. What? In the Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Spirit, in Galatians 5, 22, is what? Righteousness, peace, joy, long-suffering, all these good things. So I'll tell you what, the Holy Spirit's real. And the Spirit-filled life's the key to the abundant life that God has for us. And I remember about two years ago

when Donna was facing her. cancer surgery and I've got to confess I was battling with some anxiety for her in facing this and it was in my backyard at night praying when the Holy Spirit came and really spoke peace to me and I could just trust God with my wife this precious gift that he gave me 64 years ago I can't believe he gave it to me 64 years ago we were 16 and I knew she was the one we've been married 60 years we'll celebrate 61 years this year together but in a moment when I needed peace the Holy Spirit came and spoke peace I've got this Donald was peaceful the whole time but I wasn't and and we started I remember when we took her into surgery we're singing songs of praise down through the hallway of the hospital at down at Good Samaritan and some of the nurses you could tell the ones that were believers they started singing in with joining us but saying we're just singing through the hallways going through the hallways singing praising God the surgeon comes out and check on Donna and here's Donna's question to the surgeon how is your son she she's asking how the surgeon's son is who's there operating on her that goes back to a office visit we have with the surgeon when before we left here's one of the Donna's standard questions anytime she has a office visit with a doctor and there's a first time we ever met this doctor this this thoracic surgeon she says a doctor how can we pray for you before we leave and they usually look at you like I've never had that asked before and then he mentioned that his son needed prayer and Donna prayed for his son by name and she prayed every day for him and so he's going she's going in our praying room and she's asking how's your son I prayed for him this morning she's getting ready to have surgery to get cancer removed and she's praying for the doctor's son what kind of impact is that well you know what she was floating in the realm of the Holy Spirit's peace on her life because she know I'm surrendered to God I'm God God's got me he's got me under control that's what the Holy Spirit does we live in a world so filled with anxiety we stand out from the world because we are filled with the Holy Spirit and with the Holy Spirit the great byproduct is peace amen

confidence joy I love it but mostly it's this reason that the Holy Spirit has come to empower us for our mission because we've been given a mission yes we have we are the light we're the ones called to bring hope to bring joy to bring peace to the world by introducing the world to Jesus and our world is those that you have influence over sharing that we are different there's a different spirit on us there's a different tone in our lives we march to the beat of a different drum we have Christ in us the hope of glory we have the Holy Spirit filling us and empowering us for our mission we are on mission I love Acts 1 8 but you'll receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea Samaria and to the ends of the earth in Palm Beach County Martin County Okeechobee County Broward County I don't know what Orlando Orlando what county are you up there are you know what was orange orange I can't say the word orange I've never been able to say it right in a funny they blame it on me because I grew up in Southern Ohio but in Orange County you know whoever you are we're called to impact our world with the love and message of Jesus Christ and we're empowered to do it by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit praise God so the Trinity gives us insight to the omnipotent all-powerful omniscient all-knowing omnipresent ever-present God and let me close with these three statements the Father loves us more than we can imagine the Son saves us with a price we could not pay and the Spirit empowers us to become all we were created for. And I close with a prayer over you that Paul prayed over the church at Corinth. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship, I love that, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. The grace, the love, the fellowship may be with you all. and we're going to pray. Father, I just ask you to help us. Get a deeper glimpse into your true heart for us, your heart of love, your heart of mercy, your heart of grace, a heart that wants to restore us, redeem us and transform us and empower us to be all you've ordained us to be in our lives. Father, I pray today, if there'd be one or more that have never fully embraced you as their personal savior, that today would be a day, they say, I want to open my heart up and invite Jesus into my life. Today's the day I want the Holy Spirit to take up residence in my heart, in my life. And if that is you today, we're going to pray a prayer. And I want you to pray it with sincerity of the heart. The Bible teaches us that if you believe in your heart and make that confession with your mouth, that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He came to pay the penalty of sin for mankind and you're receiving his grace, his mercy and his forgiveness. When you do that, a supernatural act happens inside of you. Your spirit is transformed. And then that will begin to work its way from the inside out of your life and begin to transform you. And you will begin to become all that God has called you to be. And if that's you, wherever you are and our heads are bowed, I just want you to raise your hand and say,

Coach, I want you to pray for me. Just raise your hands. Here at Gardens, raise your hands up. Other campuses, campus, pastor watching. Online, God's watching. Raise your hands, I see your hands. And we're gonna pray this prayer together. You have raised your hands. I want you to pray a little bit louder than those around you. Follow me with this prayer. Dear Lord Jesus, we surrender our lives to you. Come in and fill us with your love. Forgive us of our past and our sins. But from this day forward, we're going to serve you with all our heart. Transform us from the inside out that we may live for you and be a wonderful example for you in helping others discover your love. We seal this prayer today in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. And all God's people said, amen, amen. God bless you, I love you. God bless you, I love you.
