The Powerful Path of Submission | Conspiracy of the Cross Week 3

Doss received a draft order in the mail. He showed up at Fort Jackson and we'll do anything the army asked except for two things. He would not carry a rifle and he would not train on the Sabbath. He did everything else. He drilled, he dug, he marched, he scrubbed. He took the hours of watch that nobody else even wanted. He gave it his best. His own unit hated him for those two commitments that he made. They called him a coward. They would even throw their boots at him when he knelt down at night to pray. The officers over him even tried to get him discharged as unfit for duty. One officer, history tells us flat out told him, "God must hate a soldier that refuses to fight." Listen, Doss stayed. He committed to be the best soldier he could despite his convictions. He didn't ask for a transfer. He didn't go to the press. He didn't try to drum up support. He didn't try to find other objectors. He kept showing up and kept doing his job even better than the men who were mocking him. Now fast-forward to May 1945 and Doss's unit actually just deployed to the Pacific Theater to Okinawa Island and they found themselves trapped near a 400-foot cliff. His company, they get overrun. They get the order to retreat, to pull back and everybody else is running, but Doss went the other way for roughly 12 hours, alone and under fire. Desmond Doss dragged wounded men to the edge of that 400-foot cliff and lowered them down one by one and every single time he prayed the same prayer, "Lord, help me get just one more. Lord, help me get one more." Around 75 men came off the cliff alive that day because of Desmond Doss.

He Desmond found himself inside of a system that he couldn't control, yet he honored what was asked of him. He stood by his convictions and in the end, he won the respect of the unit around him and had a nation call him a hero. He could have blended in, he could have picked up a rifle, that was the easy thing to do. He could have let the officers discharge him and go home, that would have been the easy thing to do. Instead, he stayed, he showed up, he modeled Jesus by serving everyone around him in the book of 1 Peter that we're studying as a church. It caused that power, submission, and it's a path that few people will walk today. The question that God has for us, will we walk the powerful path of submission? It's going to take God's help, so let's take a moment and pray and prepare for God's Word. God, we come for you today. What a great day, God. Thank you so much for waking us up today, giving us breath in our lungs today. Thank you so much for your Word and this community. Thank you so much for the mission that you've given us. Thank you so much for everything that you put in front of us to do, God, we love you. We're surrounded by you. We're expecting to hear from you today. God, pray for humility. It's going to take an extra dose of humility from all of us today, and we ask you to shape our hearts. God, how prideful would it be for us to come into your presence with your people and not leave challenge and transformed? God, whatever you have to say today, we will obey, because it's in your name we gather and your name we pray, and all God's people said, "Hey, Miss Eebox, I'll be in church this week." Come on, give God some praise.

Amen. Amen. Man, I'm so excited to be with you. I want to welcome you no matter where you are. If you're live at a campus, if you're watching live or later online, God behind bars, wind community gatherings, literally across the state of Tennessee and around the world, we're gathered. No matter where you are, I want to make sure you know we are together. We are one church excited for everything that God has for us. This is really one of my favorite times of the whole week, one of my most filling times of the week, and I pray it's that way for you as well. Just excited about everything that God has. Right now, we're going through a book of the Bible called First Peter, and it's got its name from its author, Peter, who is one of Jesus' closest friends. Now listen, if Peter's talking, then we're going to want to lean in. Being one of Jesus' best friends, he was a eyewitness to how Jesus lived his life, how Jesus loved, how Jesus led, how Jesus died, how Jesus was resurrected, and Peter believed what he saw to such a degree that he was willing to die for what he believed, for what he saw. People don't die for lies, Peter died, but also tells us how to live like Jesus. which I think is a lot of us, I know it's me a lot of times. If you're the kind of person who believes there's more in you spiritually, there's more for you spiritually. There's more obedience, there's more impact, there's more boldness, there's more love and commitment. Peter's our guy, Peter is our guy. Peter went from denying Jesus, from being a fisherman to denying Jesus, to leading the church,

to preaching the first Christian sermon. I mean, to writing parts of the Bible, it's a big deal, Peter's our guy. Not only that, and he's such a hope, he's such an encouragement, we're never too far gone. No matter where you are, no matter what's been done to you, no matter what you've done, God has a plan for you. And Peter's gonna show us today how to live a powerful life, no matter what's happened, no matter what you've done, no matter what's been done to you, right? For you to live a winning life, winning the world around you, no matter what has happened. Also in this series, it's one of my favorite ways to learn together, we're gonna teach through a book, I love, it's one of my favorite things to do, to study God's Word together. And I wouldn't say we're gonna go line by line, but there's just, there's just so much. We're really only gonna be able to scratch the surface of what God has for us today. And really my desire is that you would be hungry, that this would make you hungry for God's Word. So actually, if you have your Bible, either in paper on your phone, go ahead and open to first Peter chapter two. I'm gonna, I'll get excited, I'll stand back up, and I'm gonna try to just do this like I do my quiet time.

And so grab your Bible and go to first Peter chapter two, even if you're new here, look it up on your phone, you can Google it, you can find it, I believe in you. So first Peter chapter two, and I pray, my prayer is that you get hungry for God's Word by what he does in these next few moments. So I'm gonna start us out in first Peter chapter two, I just wanna read you two verses, and then we'll talk about it and then we'll keep going. So I'm gonna read you first Peter chapter two verses 11 and 12, and Peter writes this, dear friends, I urge you as foreigners and exiles to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans, pagans are just people that don't believe in Jesus yet, they worship other things. Though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day that he visits. Now we won't talk about today, but just so you see right there, Peter is always thinking about when Jesus will come back, when God will come back, that has to be top of mind for us. But what I want us to see here, he calls them foreigners and exiles. Now it doesn't always work out this way, but this is a perfect connection and correlation to us where we are. He's right into these people and they might be Jews,

they might be Gentiles or Roman citizens who believe in Jesus, but what he's telling them is that you are foreigners, you are exiles. So what does that mean for us? You are not primarily American. You are a exile here. You are a foreigner here. What he's telling them is that you are not primarily Jew, you are not primarily a Roman. And for you, if you're a Christ follower, your primary citizenship is not American. Now, I don't think I need to say this, I love America. You better believe I do. Your boys got more American flash swim trunks than I can shake a stick at. I am American, okay? Yeah, listen, I get in trouble every time that when we talk about our weddings, I didn't cry when Rachel comes down the aisle, but your boy's gonna cry about the gospel and when those planes fly over during the year. Whoo, okay, anyway. I love America, okay? Whether without the A, I love it. But my primary citizenship is not American. My primary citizenship is in the kingdom of heaven. Now, I gotta tell you, I get caught up just like everybody else. My dad's gonna use the against me in the front row. I'm turning into my dad. I used to ride in the car with my dad, my dad.

You're so angry. And really, he was listening to like political radio. And if you hear two people yell at each other for a couple hours, you're gonna get angry, right? And I'm like, "Dad, God chill out." I find myself just so rage-bated by politics, okay? I'm turning into my dad, okay? Lord, help me, forgive me, right? I get caught up in it just like everybody else. Am I telling you not to care about what's going on in our nation? Absolutely not. You should care so much, but you should care through a Christian worldview. You should care, you should care more We should be the most passionate people, but we're passionate through a Christian worldview, not a political worldview. Now, I'll ask you a question, we'll move on. Well, I'm gonna spend too much time here and say something I shouldn't say, okay? So let me ask you a question. Where does your primary citizenship lie? Where does your primary citizenship lie? Now, you may say, well Zach, that feels very spiritual and nebulous. Like how am I supposed to, it's super easy, right? You know where your citizenship is by your language, by your accent, by your values, by your time, your treasure, your talents. Do all those point to the American dream

or do they point towards the dream that Jesus laid out for us in the Great Commission? That everyone would know about the gospel of Jesus Christ, that everyone will spend eternity in heaven or in hell. What do the things that God gave you point to? Listen, the reason I'm pushing hard on this is because the main thing that Peter talks about today, if we don't have our identity set, if we don't have our citizenship set, it's too hard to carry out. That's actually part of the reason why a lot of us are having a hard time being consistent and committed. Why can't I come to church? Why can't I keep tithing? Why can't I stop looking at porn? Why can't I stop losing my temper? It's because we have one foot in our American citizenship in the world and one foot in our kingdom, our word citizenship. We gotta go all in. And listen, is this easy? No, put verses 11 and 12 back up there. It says there is a war raging against your soul. That's 'cause the devil is desperate that we don't live by our kingdom citizenship because there's so much freedom there, but also the reason he cares is 'cause of verse 12. Verse 12 says live this way so that everybody may see your good deeds and glorify God.

That's why we submit. That's why we do it. God wants everybody to know him and the devil is desperate that that doesn't happen. Listen, that's why we have to stay so locked in on our every day. That's why your quiet time matters. That's why your prayer life matters. That's why your consistency in church matters because we have to so ground ourself in our kingdom citizenship, right? So you may say, okay, okay, how am I supposed to do that? Well, let's keep going. And Peter's gonna tell us how we can ground ourself in our kingdom citizenship. I'm gonna read this verses 13 through 17 here. Follow along with me, here's what it says. Submit yourself, so say submit. One more time, say submit. It's not a cuss word, I promise. Submit yourself for the Lord's sake. Not for your sake, not for someone else's sake. We don't do it because of how somebody else treats us. We do it for the Lord's sake. To every human authority, whether the emperor as the supreme authority or the governors who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and commend those who do right, for it is God's will that by doing good, you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish people,

live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover up for evil, live as God's slave. Know your proper respect or show your proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God and honor the emperor. Genuinely, guys, we could spend hours in this passage. But here's what I wanna do, let me give you the main idea and then the God's gonna blow our mind here in a moment and then we're gonna let the word of God do its work on our hearts and on our lives. Something I want us to see here is that submission is a strategy, it's not surrender. Some of us are concerned that if we submit and we worry about the kingdom of heaven first, then we're gonna lose. But that would mean that God can't fight your battles, that you need to fight your battles. We submit to God, submission is strategy, it's not surrender. Listen, how we live out our kingdom citizenship in a way that wins the world around us. How are we gonna do it? What we do with swords and sermons? I love that one. I love sermons, I love swords. All we're gonna do it with posts and propaganda, like social media or like politics. All we're gonna do it through arguments and through assaults, like we see some other religions trying to carry out. No, man of God, woman of God, student, adult,

whoever can hear this, we are gonna do it. It is selfless submission to God's strategy. Selfless submission to God's strategy. Well, pastor, that's a real bummer. I like swords and sermons or posts and propaganda. Those were my favorite, I get that. And my flesh agrees with you, but God's word tells us the same spirit that is in Jesus is in us and gives us a way to win. Not to win an argument, not to win an election, And you might think it's impossible. You might say, Zach, you don't know the people you're asking me to submit to. My boss is the worst. Maybe you're a student. You think my parents don't know anything. Maybe you're married and you think my spouse is so selfish. You think the government is corrupt. And some of those things might be true. But I wanna take a moment and understand the context of what Peter is saying. And I believe it's gonna bring another level of humility and power to us submitting to God no matter your circumstance. See, in those five verses I read to you, twice, Peter says to honor the emperor. Now, do you know who the emperor was in this season where Peter is writing? The emperor is a guy named Emperor Nero. He was the emperor of Rome at the time.

And Romans thought the emperor was God. Kind of like the Egyptians thought that Pharaoh was God. Now, Emperor Nero, he must be a great guy. He must be a great guy 'cause Peter says right here, we have to honor him, we have to honor him twice in two verses. He must be a great guy, right? Absolutely not. Actually, in Rome in 64 AD, there's a great fire. And Emperor Nero blamed the Christians for that fire. So he persecuted them mercilessly. There's actually a Roman historian named Tacitus. And he's famous for this quote about Christians. And if you could, could you let them kind of see the whole, the whole screen if you could? This is what Tacitus said, how Nero treated Christians. Bakri of every sort was added to their deaths. He says they were covered with the skins of beasts. They were torn by dogs and perished. They were nailed to crosses. They were doomed to the flames and burned. Listen, these aren't, this is not hyperbole. These are things that actually happened. These are things that they did to Christians. Look at this last one. To serve as nightly illuminations when daylight had expired. What that's saying is that they were like Christian bodies on fire so that people could see where they were going in the streets at night.

It was brutal. It was brutal. And Peter tells us to honor that guy. What, it's like what's happening to the Christians in Nigeria right now, they're being slaughtered. It's like, what are we supposed to do? And Peter says, hey, we are to honor. How in the world? How in the world are we supposed to honor? It's because as Christians, we, no matter what we're doing, no matter what God tells us to do, we look past our current moment in time into eternity. And that is what we care most about. Can I just, can I just, we're at church. Can we just be raw and real? We're in the trust tree here together. There's an area in my life where this is hard for me right now. If you're watching, like when I'm watching, you're seeing an increase in Islam and Muslims in America, both in population, more just more of them here and in politics. And that's pretty challenging for me as a Christian, as somebody who wants to see not just America, but beyond come to know Jesus. And so I don't like it a lot. If we're, if we can just be honest at church. Guess who knows I don't like it? My family knows. I probably talk about it more than I should. Some of my team here at Faith Promise, and obviously they're hearing some of my heart right now,

but you know who knows I don't like it the most, is my algorithm on social media. It is well aware that I don't like it. And it impacts my life. My for you page on Instagram should just be called my firesack up page or my rage page is what should be called. You have a friend or someone in your life that like can make you mad professionally, like it's like their spiritual gift. For a lot of us, that's social media. That's what it's there for, to keep you engaged. And nothing keeps you engaged like annoying the mess out of you. But can I, can I tell you something? There was anger and hatred building up in my heart. Not for Islam, but for the people. Can I tell you? Hey, Islam, Jesus is very clear. It says in John 14, 6, Jesus said, "I'm the way the truth of life. "No one comes to the Father but through me. "Anything that preaches a salvation "different than Jesus, it is demonic. "It is from hell." In Revelation the last chapter, it says you add anything to this book. If you change it, you are cursed. Listen, Islam, it is demonic. But to please. And it may make you uncomfortable. It makes me uncomfortable.

But you know why? Because we've bought a lie from the enemy. And instead of attacking the principality, the power of darkness that is causing a lie that is causing people to die, we're fighting a person. And listen, it's hard. And that's something I'm wrestling with. But what I realize in that moment, when I find myself, my neck is hot, when I'm frustrated, whenever I'm thinking that way, I realize that I'm thinking with my American citizenship primarily and not my kingdom of God citizenship. Now listen, it's hard. Let me just put it to you this way. I love you. I love America. I love God, more than I love America, more than I love you, more I love anybody. So can you be challenged with me in this? If we live with self-righteousness and self-preservation instead of submission, it is proof that our citizenship reads United States and not under submission. Which US are you picking? Both don't get to be number one. There's no participation trophies in the kingdom of God as to how it works. You have to submit to one first and foremost. As if you're wondering, I feel just as uncomfortable as you do right now.

No matter where you fall. No matter if Islam is what is bothering you right now or this transgender stuff or whatever it might be. But what do we care with most? What do we care for most? And you may say, Zach, brother, I'm uncomfortable. What am I supposed to do? How are we supposed to live this out? And Peter tells us how we're supposed to live this out. We live it out by following the example of Jesus. In 1 Peter, same chapter, chapter two, verses 21 through 24, here's what he says. He says, to this you were called the submission. Because Christ suffered for you, leading you an example. Jesus is our example that you should follow His steps. He committed no sin and no deceit was found in His mouth. Yet when they hurled insults at Him, He did not retaliate. When He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to the one who judges justice. That's it right there. He entrusted Himself to the one who judges justice. He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness. By His wounds, we have been healed. We can live this out by following the example of Jesus. Now listen, I only speak with absolutes when it's backed up by the Bible. Here's an absolute I wanna tell you. No human in nobody, no living, no human in history has ever been treated more unjustly than Jesus Christ.

Listen, and read what Jesus did. 'Cause you might think, Zach, brother, you're asking me to do some submission and it would be unjust. No one has ever walked a planet who has been more just and was treated more unjustly than Jesus. When they insulted Him, He didn't insult back. Whenever they heard Him, the most powerful being never stepped on the planet did not hurt them back physically or with His words. It says He handed Himself to the Father who He trusted, who judges, justly. Jesus knew that this persecution, Jesus knew that the challenge He was facing would make a way for others. Are we willing to walk that out? Think about this, just receive this. Listen, the most submitted man who ever lived was the freest man that ever lived. The freest, most powerful man that ever walked to face the earth in Jesus was also still, at the same time, the most submitted man. Submission is not weakness, submission is sovereign power. He did it to carry a weight that we could not carry. He did it to pay a debt that we could not pay. Kingdom's citizens submit themselves to God in all things. For your life is your strategy submission. Now again, we just scratched the surface of this and I pray that you'll dig in.

I'll pray that you'll wrestle this out. I'll pray that you'll ask the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit, lead me, guide me. I pray that you'll get in group. Listen, some of us think we don't have time for group. I feel like with what we're saying, and Peter says we don't know when Jesus comes in. If you want to study God's word, that's what we're seeing on college campuses and beyond. What Christians are asking for the most is to know how to study God's word. Listen, we do that in group. There'll be a number of texts on the screen. Text that number will help you find a group. We'll walk with you. I'm in a group, I love, I'm in two groups. I need it, I love it, it gives me life. Now, as we wrap up, there's a little bit of time in First Peter. There's two things, they're in my notes, and I didn't get a chance to get to them, but I just want to make sure that you know they're there. In First Peter's chapter two, there's some people that use this in a way that really does frustrate me. If you get online and social media, and I got to tell you, I love you, but TikTok theology is very dangerous. Social media theology and thoughts about the Lord not ground in scripture and church is dangerous, okay?

And there's some people online that would say that First Peter's chapter two says that God and the Bible condone slavery. And how I was going to say this originally, my team told me was too mean. That is a severe mistreating of scripture. And I believe that people that are pushing that are going to have a harsh, harsh judgment for slandering the character of our Lord. If that's you, and what we've done, this is so important to me, we've actually put a article in the Faith Promise app for you to see that in First Peter chapter two, that slavery is not condoned by the Lord, and that actually he has more value in people, in my Lord, in everybody that he made, he never made a station who wasn't made his image. Mankind, he made the male and female, he made them in his image. And so I'm not gonna go off on that. I just want you to know, we put an article in there to help you equip yourself to have those conversations and to honor the character of our Lord. Not gonna beat somebody up with it, but to honor the character of our Lord by knowing what the Bible actually says. Something else I want us to see here that I think is very important is the first seven verses of chapter three in First Peter, Peter brings this thought of submission over to marriage.

And listen, First Peter chapter three, in Ephesians chapter five, have a lot of incredible things to say about marriage. Marriage is God's idea, it's God's design, he knows best, I promise, okay? But I just wanna read you the first verse of First Peter chapter three. It says wives in the same way submit yourselves to your own husband so that if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives. I wanna point this out for a couple reasons. Number one, it is another, just highlight, the reason we submit is so that people will see Jesus. I do wanna say that God has structured the family in a very specific way. But listen, husbands, before you pick up this verse on the conversation with your wife, I want you to make sure you read Ephesians chapter five. This says that wives submit to your husbands as they love their wives as Christ loved the church. If you haven't got to that part of the book yet, that part of the story, Christ died for the church. It's pretty easy to submit to that man. It's pretty easy to submit to the man that prays for his wife and his kids before he goes to bed. It's pretty easy to submit to the man that says, we're gonna make these decisions for the Lord first and foremost, that shuts his mouth, holds his temper,

honors the Lord and fights for his family. I don't have a submission problem in my house. Do you know why my wife submits to me? There's never a doubt in her mind that I'm submitted to the Lord. So submission follows submission. And I wish I could talk to you about it so much. I wish I could, but let me just tell you this. I think we overcome the enemy by the blood of lamb and the word of our testimony. And I got this story sent in, just imagine this. It says wives, submit to the Lord so that if you're hunting another Lord, that he would. Got this sent in literally last Sunday. This is the story that was sent in. Growing up, this food man said growing up, only Christians I knew were men who hurt my family. My stepfather took us to church every Sunday, then he would abuse my mom and my sister and me. When I was eight, he kicked me so hard it fractured my ribs. Years later, another man who called himself a Christian used my hunting rifle in a drug deal that went wrong because my fingerprints were on the gun. I was arrested at 13 and spent six months in juvenile detention before he was found and finally confessed. For years, that was what Christianity looked like to me. Then I met my wife. Then Easter at Faith Promise Church this year, I watched my eight-year-old son get baptized.

I felt God pulling me then and there. This is last weekend. This past Sunday, I finally said yes and gave my life to Jesus and chose to be baptized. Is that not amazing? Isn't that not amazing? [ Cheers and applause ] It's amazing. It's amazing. So, a woman of God keeps submitting, keep fighting, keep pushing. A lot of us, we look at the authority right above us and we don't want to submit because of that authority. Hey, be a man or woman of God and look at a couple runs higher. We don't submit because of the authority right above us. We submit to the highest authority and because he's so worthy of honor, we don't honor somebody because they deserve honor. We give somebody honor because we have honor to give because we're sons and daughters of the Most High King. We read earlier in 1 Peter, 2, or 1 Peter, 2, then... Because Jesus took our sin on his body that we're healed. And there's some people here today that you need to be healed. And there's a lot of people that need to be physically healed. And who talk about mayors? It's probably a relationally healed. But can we talk about the first and foremost? There's a lot of us today. You need to be spiritually healed. You've never submitted your life to Jesus. Maybe you come to church a lot. Maybe you tried to pray. You tried to...

You tried to... You tried to do these things, but you've always had a hard time being consistent. Have you ever submitted your life to Jesus and made Him actually Lord of your life? Not like vice president, not like co-CEO with you and your feelings. Have you ever made Him the Lord of your life? You could have come to church your whole life and you haven't made Him more to your life yet. If right now the Holy Spirit is drawing you in and saying, you need a relationship with Jesus, you need to make Him more to your life. We're going to pray your prayer right now. It tells in Romans 10, pray this prayer. Believe in Jesus and you will be saved. And I believe there's people all over to the scene beyond. Right now you need to pray this prayer with us. I know you still have questions and we're going to walk those out together. But don't keep it from you from answering the question right now. You need a relationship with Jesus. So we value your hand and close your eyes with me. And we're going to pray this prayer out loud altogether. Nobody at faith promise, praise alone. Let's pray this together. Say Jesus. I know I've sinned, but I know you came to pay for my sin because you love me, because you want me. I submit to you as the Lord of my life. I believe in my heart and confess with my mouth that you are my Lord. With heads still bowed and I still closed.

Hey, if you gave your life to Christ, then keep those heads bowed. On the count of three, if you gave your life to Christ that you made Him the Lord of your life, I'm asking you to raise your hand. You can be bold. You can do it. This is the reason that God brought you here today. It's to raise your hand right here and to start a relationship that your life will never be the same. So you are bold. You are brave. You are a son or daughter. On the count of three, I'm asking you to raise your hand. High and bold. One, two, three, go to raise your hand. Come on, that's awesome. Raising up high, you gave your life to Christ today. Praise the Lord. Awesome. Awesome. Thank you, Jesus. Come on, that's so good. Awesome. Awesome. Thank you, promise. Can we start by with the view that gave the Lord to Christ today? Come on. Come on. Thank you, Jesus. Hey, we're going to sing a song. And, hey, people just got saved. Was young, any better than that? But there's even more of us today that are wrestling with pride in a lack of submission. You live more like an American than like a Christian. And, I love you. And I don't make it so uncomfortable for the fun of it.

We get uncomfortable because we'll stand before the Lord one day. We get uncomfortable because there's people out there that they need somebody to live more like a Christian citizen than like an American citizen. And that's us. That's why you're at this church. That's why you're here in these words. You are bold. You are brave. You are a son or daughter of the Most High King. So, here in a moment, there's going to be prayer team members up front. If you need prayer, come get prayed for. Maybe you don't need prayer. Maybe you just know that you're living in pride and disobedience. You need to come kneel at the altar. You just need to come and say, "Lord, help me. I do it every day. Lord, help me." Gosh, God's got so much for you. Please. He wants so much for you that he wants from you. We're you staying as we prepare to respond. God, right now, as we sing this song, we are praying people who need prayer. They'll either text the number on the screen, or they'll come up and have somebody play their hands on them and pray for them. Maybe they kneel at the altar, whatever it might be today. We're submitting to you.
