The Open Door

We've been looking at the letters of the messages Jesus sent through John to the seven churches in Revelation and it's ancient wisdom. You know, it seems so far ago, but it's so relevant today if we really lean into what he's saying. We've looked at his messages to Ephesus, to Smyrna, to Pergamum, to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and if you wanna catch up on those, you can do it on our website. Of course, we've got all the messages that are on there today. We're gonna be looking at Philadelphia. Philadelphia, not Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but Philadelphia is a part, yeah, of the map up there you'll see. It's kind of in the middle of all of those red dots and on the left side of the screen, and they are the cities where the churches were that Jesus was speaking to. So as we go into Revelation chapter three, we're gonna look at his message to the church in Philly. You ready for this? Here we go. Write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close, and what he closes, no one can open. I know all the things you do,

and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me. Look, I will force those who belong to Satan's synagogue, those liars who say they are Jews but are not, to come and bow down at your feet. They will acknowledge that you are the ones I love. Because you have obeyed my command to persevere, I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong to this world. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have so that no one will take away your crown. All who are victorious will become pillars in the temple of my God, and they will never have to leave it. And I will write on them the name of my God, and they will be citizens in the city of my God, the new Jerusalem that comes down from heaven from my God. And I will also write on them my new name. Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Amen to that, amen to that. You may be seated. As you're sitting down thinking about citizenship, there are a few people that are gonna be watching a football game this afternoon. United States, we call it soccer, but this is the World Cup, right?

And in the World Cup, who you got today? You got Spain, Argentina. Argentina. I wore, I've got a bunch of jerseys this week. I wore my Argentina jersey into Chipotle, and I got cussed out because I was wearing the wrong jersey, he said. I said, what, you like Spain? No, I just hate Argentina, he said. I'm like, man, you better watch out what you wear in public, I guess, around here in this time. People that are into the World Cup are serious fans. Let me tell you. All right, as we jump into today's message, the title I have is The Open Door. Doors are a metaphor for opportunity. Got a door here. It's a metaphor, and so what Jesus is using is he's using a door as a metaphor for opportunity, and he talks about different types of opportunities that are gonna come in this text. For now, I want you to think about open doors in your life that you walked through that really made a difference for you. I mean, what were those open doors? Think back to different points of your story where you chose to go to a certain school, or you chose a certain person to marry, or you went down a particular path,

and for you, you walked through an open door, and it led to other things. It led to, perhaps, other things. For me, I would have never guessed, and in 1992, I was an intern. I was a bachelor to the rapture. I was never gonna get married, and then during my internship, I led a missions trip to Detroit, and Detroit Outreach, and the female youth leader on that trip was Jodi. And so, I chose to walk through the open door of leading a missions trip, and that led to a very cool thing called marriage. Come on, somebody. And I'll never be the same again. I walked through that door. Now, there are some doors that perhaps you're like, I wish I hadn't walked through that. That was a mistake, I wish I had not walked through that. That opportunity didn't produce good results. And then there are moments in our stories where we had closed doors. We wish that we could have walked through an open door, but we never had it. And when it's shut, it can seem like it's impossible to get through, to break through. And when it's impossible to break through, the other side seems so far away. Now, the church in Philadelphia

needed to hear Jesus' words at this moment. Because in their life, they were needing an open door. They had only known closed doors. They had only known a kind of closed universe for them. Little context here, Philadelphia is located in an earthquake zone, where there are massive earthquakes regularly that brought building structures down. Earlier this year, we went on a trip, a group from Emanuel to Turkey, and we actually visited Philadelphia on the tour. It was like unremarkable in that place. I've got a little video of the spot where we all gathered together. And we were just in this almost like, it felt like a cemetery, a really small one. But basically, it was a courtyard between pillars that were from a Byzantine-era church. This is years and years later after Revelation was written. That's all that's left, because buildings over and over were brought down. Now, there's a city that's built up around that with earthquake-proof buildings and that kind of thing. But for the church that grew up in this earthquake zone, they were just trying to survive. They weren't really dreaming. When you grow up with earthquakes around, you're not building anything because you're afraid of it crashing down. And for people who have things like PTSD

from previous earthquakes, they're experiencing anxiety as if the earthquake were happening now, even if it wasn't. People who have come through out of trauma and dysfunction and hurt, you understand this. So you're in a kind of mode where you're just trying to survive. I think all of us hit moments in our story where we're just trying to survive, and it feels like the doors are closed, and we feel weak, and we feel small, and we feel unable to do anything. And on top of all of that, this church was most likely made up of mostly Jewish converts to Jesus, and they'd been kicked out of the synagogue. There were people preventing them from being in their family, their surroundings. And everyone that was a part of their family circle has cut them off, and any hopes of clinging to the promises of their heritage seem to be gone. And it feels like the additional persecution and suffering that the church was walking through at that time from the religions of the day and the people that were in charge of the governmental structures and the oppressiveness of it, the people in the church,

everywhere they looked, it was like the sky was falling, and they couldn't dream, they couldn't think beyond the limits of where they are. So Jesus starts off by addressing their hopelessness about all the closed doors in their life. He says in verse number seven, look at it, write this letter to the angel, again, angel means the pastor, write this letter to the angel of the church in Philadelphia. This is the message from, everybody say from. You got a paper Bible, underline from in there, or if you have electronic version, you could highlight it. This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David, what he opens, no one can close, and what he closes, no one can open. Now this is Jesus, before he even gives instructions to the church in Philadelphia, it's Jesus saying, listen, I want you to understand who's talking to you right now. You see, he quotes from Isaiah, a prophetic verse from Isaiah in Isaiah 22, 22, that says, I will give him the key to the house of David, the highest position in the royal court. When he opens doors, no one will be able to close them, and when he closes doors, no one will be able to open them. So literally, Jesus is taking from this angel. prophetic text which by the way at the time was written to a nation and it was something that actually God did regularly and he said this of Israel

that that he would take people that were lowly and small and weren't born into the right families and he would lift them up into a status that's equal to royalty and so he references the the key of David which references the royal family of God the family that actually Jesus comes out of the lineage of David but what Jesus is saying he's lifting from this he said I'm the God that does this all the time not just for Philly and one of the things that I do is I take people and they are outside of potential they're outside of opportunity they've got closed doors in their life and what I do is I open doors that nobody else can open and I close doors that nobody else can shut and what Jesus is saying and do is he's saying listen I'm gonna give you a word in a moment but before I give that word I want you to know it's not just somebody saying a good fortune cookie little statement this is from the one who is holy and true and the one that has done this throughout thousands of years of biblical history how many have found that to be true where where God did things in you that only he could have done that only he could have put your family back together again only he could have brought you from Milwaukee come on somebody John Carlos and Gabby all the way to stay in Minneapolis St. Paul only God does things for his own reasons he brings you takes you to places you would never be otherwise so these Christians who have been evicted from the promises of their heritage by the people in power in the synagogue Jesus lets them know all along I have the key to the royal family of David I outrank all of your enemies the statement about Jesus is that he opens and closes things in fact Jesus tells the church in Philly look at verse number eight he says I know all the things you do and I have opened a door for you that no one can close you have little strength anybody here ever feel that way you have little strength that you obeyed my word and did not deny me look I will force those who belong to Satan's synagogue those liars who say they are Jews but are not to come and bow down at your feet they will acknowledge that you are the ones I love he says you're you have little strength but you persevered you held on you didn't quit turn on the person next to you say I'm just glad you didn't quit

thanks for not quitting but you obeyed and you persevered by the way for a door to move does not require you being strong this is what Jesus is saying you don't have to have all of the scripture memorized although it's a good thing to begin to do that so you had the sword of the Spirit in your hand when you're in spiritual warfare but this closed door doesn't require you getting to a point where you're super strong then God will do something he says I have opened a door for you that no one can close Jesus is saying there is an open door for you not there was not there will be there is an open door for you and you got to see it in your earthquake mindset don't miss the open door for you don't worry about the door closing because nobody can close it if he closes it or opens it now there's some debate about what the door is for the church in Philly there there's some debate about it is it about a mission opportunity be able to reach people who are away from Jesus is it what is it all about and I will tell you this the primary purpose of a church in a city is not to be there to just be there but we are called to be salt and light in the places God places us Like it matters where you live, the career you're in, the schools you go to, the neighborhoods you're around, even the family you're born into, God means for you to be salt and light. That's what Jesus said. You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world. He's saying, listen, it matters. And sometimes I think the gospel proclamation to get out into the world has been relegated to whoever holds the mic in a church. But let me tell you this, if Minneapolis-St. Paul is gonna be reached, it's not gonna be through my preaching alone. It's gonna be through the people of God

carrying the light into the darkness. Come on, somebody. That's where it is. It's in real life stuff everywhere that you go. Now, some of you might be in a place where you're like, what was that synagogue of Satan stuff? Now, I referenced that in a previous message from Thyatira. For your purposes today, I just want you to see that that old synagogue had people that had the wrong mindset and they were preventing the church from accessing relationships. And Jesus says, hey, listen, I'm gonna make a way for the gospel to reach people. Whether they're closing the door or not, I can pop that door open if I want to and I can close the door if I want to. Now, I feel compelled to speak to you today about open doors in your life right now. Not just the ones in the long-term future, but right now. Church, we have open doors for sharing the gospel that are so different than 20 years ago. 20 years ago, I read a Barna research paper and then listened to a podcast where they talked about all the data about Christians sharing their faith with the world around them. And that's changed over the last 20 years or so.

I remember when I was growing up, everybody was teaching confrontive evangelism. And you had your four spiritual laws and you had a specific Romans road and you had a specific, and all those things are really important to know. Like, if you're gonna win the people in your life to Jesus and it comes to that moment where you're gonna pray, then you gotta know how to lead them in prayer. And by the way, that's why we model it at the end of every service, we give people an opportunity to come to Christ because you might lead them in a prayer that sounds a little bit like the one I lead in every week. But it was kind of knowledge-based truth against other people, the way churches tried to reach people around them was kind of like proving that your religion is true and the other religions are false. And all of that is still very valuable to be able to defend your faith. But I want you to see that in the AI era, people are seeing so much fact-sharing that they actually want to have dialogue with real people. Not formulas, not where everything is perfect. Ordinary people, not just the people of a slick reel about how to have a perfect solution to body weight or brain clarity or parenting, but real people.

See, they're getting all the information, but information doesn't equal transformation. They're looking for, are you transformed? Or do you just listen to a guy yell at you every Sunday morning? But nothing is different with your life. See, people face the same challenges that all y'all face. But they're looking at you and wondering, why does Jesus make a difference for you? And you don't need to be insecure about all the questions. By the way, not most people aren't right away gonna become a Christian because you shared the gospel with them once. Most people, it's gonna be a long journey for them, where they're watching you, they're perceiving, they're listening, they're seeing if you mess up. And what do you do when you mess up? Because they mess up. Do you give up on yourself when you fall down? No, the Bible says a righteous person gets back up again and keeps moving. Do they see you have a resiliency to your life? Or do you go on emotional downward spirals every time something happens? No, because of Jesus, you can handle divorce. Because of Jesus, you can handle dysfunction. Because of Jesus, you can handle rejection. Why? Because you find in Jesus a way forward. Because you're looking to see,

is it real or is it just another AI version? See, this generation isn't looking, they are looking for an authentic conversation with real people who aren't getting paid for the number of clicks on their real. They have the same challenges as you, but you have Jesus. How does Jesus help you? You don't have to be perfect to share Jesus. What I'm saying to you is that every single day, we have open doors for conversation, but we gotta see it. We gotta notice it. We can't just get hung out in earthquake mode. We miss the open doors because we're disoriented or we're scared or we think we're alone. Listen, parents, you have opportunity open doors every single day for the gospel to be lived through your life and modeled for your children. And they're gonna have questions. Don't be bothered by your children's questions. Sometimes they're teenagers and they're mean questions. But as long as you pay for the car insurance, you still have power. And with great power comes great responsibility. Don't wreck your witness because you're on a power trip. When people ask questions, seek to understand why they're asking the question. What's really going on? Hang in there, stay close. People in your life that you go to school with,

work with, hang out with, play pickleball with, whatever. Don't be uptight, but listen and ask questions and allow God to open that door. There's already open doors for you with the gospel. Can I get an amen to that? Don't just rely on me. Don't say listen to Pastor Nate's message on the podcast. You know what's gonna change their life more than Pastor Nate's message on the podcast for them? You. You make a difference. Turn to the person next to you and say, you make a difference. On Thursday every week, I have a phone call with Troop. He's a field minister in the prison in Texas that ministers to death row. And I catch up with Troop. He's an amazing guy. He's on his own life sentence, but he's been trained, saved by Jesus, transformed. I think he's like Paul in prison. Shout out to you, Troop, if you're watching this, because he ends up watching it later on. Anyways, as we were talking, he was telling me this week, and it really encouraged me, that 60 guys on death row are going through the book I wrote. And they're on week number eight this week, which the title of the chapter is Partners with God. And even behind prison doors in which they only get out for an hour a week, these guys can be on mission,

even though they can't go out and about. And they're able to connect with the guys in the cells around them, and they can write letters to their family members, and they have purpose to their life, even though their life is limited. And I'm just saying this, you can have an open door in a prison cell. It doesn't mean you have to have the perfect circumstances. You can have an open door in your life. He was sharing with me that a few of the guys aren't yet followers of Christ, but they're still participating every week. They're doing the discussion questions, and reading the chapter, and they're all watching the series on something called Pando, which I'll describe in just a moment. Several years ago, I had what I thought was an open door that I prayed about, and I shared it with the church, and it was, I felt like God was calling us to plant a campus of Emmanuel in prison. And we started partnering with the ministry that helped us do that, and then everything shut down. The entire state of Minnesota didn't allow anybody new in. There was just closed doors everywhere. And I wondered, did I miss it? Frankly, I was a little embarrassed, because I proclaimed this is what I felt like God was calling us to do, and then it all got shut down. And then there was this new ministry with a Pando app, where they were allowed by prisons

to put a pre-programmed tablet in prisoner cells, where they could watch pre-programmed church content. And it's called the Pando app. And there were prisons all over the country are allowing them to access this programming. Now, Emmanuel is in thousands of locations in prisons. Wow. Wow. Wow. Sometimes, you get a window, a preview, something like that. that's coming, and then you face a closed door, and you're like, did I miss it? Is God against me? No, you just keep holding on, because God's got a bigger vision for your life than you have for yourself. God's got a bigger vision for your life than you have for yourself. God's got a bigger vision for your life than you have for yourself. God's got a bigger vision for your life. Last week, one of the Teen Challenge staff, when they were here sharing their testimonies, pulled me aside afterwards to share with me that three years ago, he was on the run from God, and he was in jail, discouraged and hopeless, and they gave him a tablet, and he started watching a manual, and now he's helping set other people free.

Come on, somebody. What door God opens, nobody can shut. No matter how tired you feel, listen to Jesus speak to you today. There is an open door in front of you, and God is not a God of confusion. We know for certain that when you open the Bible, you're opening a door. Everything that's in here is for you. You might not understand all about it. You might need to ask questions to discern what the scripture says, but it's an open door for you, and God is calling all of us in general to be people of faith, to push past PTSD and through open doors. No matter how tired you feel, listen to him speak to you. What did he say in verse number eight? I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close. You have little strength, yet you obeyed my word and did not deny me. What's in front of you? Your family or your relationships, your friendships. Are you seeing it? Are you so busy that you're missing? God is moving in your family because you're busy doing other things. You're not listening or opening your eyes

to see the open door. Do you see it? Do you see the calling of God in your workplace? Open doors and positions, and God elevates people. He puts them into positions like he did as the key of David. He might move you into places of supervision or ownership of something. It's not just so that you can feel good about yourself. It's because God is opening a door. He has a plan. Jesus' words will give you faith to persevere. Do a little inventory in your life right now. Think back. Look back to the doors that you were glad that you walked through. What were those doors that you were glad that you walked through? How many are thankful for giving your life to Jesus? Was that a good door to walk through? How many received the baptism of the Holy Spirit because you heard about that and you walked through that door too? How many are thankful that God brings people into our lives, and church is weird sometimes, but you, and people are weird, and you're weird probably. But somehow, someway, God connects us with other believers and we say yes to spiritual relationships. Some of you went through growth track and you said yes, you took that next step

beyond just observing in church to wanting to be connected. Aren't you glad you walked through that door? What doors were you trying to open but God closed? When you look back, there are things that you wanted to chase, but God kept closing the door. Pastor Nathan preached a couple weeks ago about Balaam's donkey. Sometimes God just puts his hand over the matter and says no, but I want it, that was my dream. How many know God's got better dreams for us than we have for ourselves? But sometimes we get so fixated on the wrong thing and we look back and we go, I was trying to open that, but God stopped it. What doors were closed, but God opened them for you? Were there moments where God opened a door that just seemed impossible? You didn't know anybody, but God gave you favor. I remember when I moved to Minnesota from Michigan and I was so different from Minnesota culture. I didn't understand Minnesota culture. I didn't feel like I could fit in and I started volunteering at a church and it was at a manual. I didn't know anybody and I was like on the outside looking in but God made a way. I volunteered in the in the high school Sunday school class back in the day. Volunteered in there and God had a way of moving things around and one day the pastor comes to me and says the youth pastor and says hey we have an opening for an internship next summer. Do you want to do it? I didn't even know

about it. The door was closed to me but God made it wide open and that was a trip, a summer that changed my life because I walked through that door of an internship and I had no money and I didn't know how to do it but I walked on faith on God's open door. That was the summer that I got more connected at Emmanuel. Still didn't know everybody but that's when I met Jody. That's when I got involved more. Two years later we were married. One month after we were married I came on staff as a youth pastor. Walked through that open door. God did it. What are those things in your story? Pay attention to those because you also need to learn lessons from them. As you face your present and move into the future what have you learned from your previous experiences? Previously you had the fight-or-flight instinct. How did that go for you? Where you're trying to avoid things and that maybe didn't go well for you. Maybe you push past the threshold of fear and step into what God has called you or maybe you need to not fight everybody around you. Turn to the person next to you and say I'm sorry. I didn't mean to fight you. Jesus gives you hope about the future through the open door. Verse number ten he says this, because you have obeyed my command to persevere I will protect you from the great time of testing that will come upon the whole world to test those who belong to this world. I am coming soon. Come on somebody. Hold on to what you have so that no one will take away your crown. Jesus is talking about the future. He says I'm going to protect you in times of testing. That the world around the church is going to go through great turmoil where God is exposing things. Hebrews says that everything that can be shaken will be shaken. Don't be surprised when there's more war, more corruption, more political upheaval. Don't be surprised and don't follow that. Don't let that be your leader. Don't let the daily news feed on your social media. Don't let that be your open door. Some of us need to close the door to that and open the door to what Jesus says. He says while that's all going on, he says I'm gonna protect you during this time. If you lean into Jesus in times of turmoil and struggle, when things are so topsy-turvy, he'll protect you. The storm might be still raging but you will be safe in the storm because you're in Jesus hands. And he says I am

coming soon. I'm coming soon. I'm coming back. I'm not gonna leave you. I'm coming soon. He says hold on. Don't lose what you already have. I'm coming soon. And then he includes us in his future plan. He says in verse number 12, all who are victorious will become pillars in the temple of my God and they will never have to leave it. And I will write on them the name of my God and they will be citizens in the city of my God, the new Jerusalem that comes down from heaven from my God. And I will also write on them my new name. Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches. Real quick, because this is the prophetic future stuff that that Jesus did let out. He says you will become pillars in the temple of my God. The temple is the place where God's presence dwells. You'll never have to leave it, he says, and you can't be evicted. Now pillars, he says, I'm gonna make you a pillar. Remember? They feel strong and insignificant and weak. And he says I'm gonna make you so strong that you're gonna be a pillar in the temple, holding the roof. You're gonna be a significant part of what I do. Pillars outstand in our earthquake proof, by the way. Those pillars that we stood on. in Philadelphia from the Byzantine era still standing. They withstood a whole lot of stuff. I don't know if they withstood all the World War II and the bombings and all of that kind of thing that went on. My point is this, God wants to make of you somebody stronger than a person that just survives. Just kind of hold on, you know, have a good life. Have your kid or two and maybe buy a house or have a good job and a good career and go on some good trips. Those are all fun things and not evil things. But Jesus says, the door I have open for you, if you walk through it, the opportunities I have for you, it's gonna benefit way more than you. It's gonna benefit your extended family. It's gonna benefit the people you work with, the people in your neighborhood, in your apartment complex. It's gonna benefit the people in the career that you're in. I will make you a pillar. You're not going to be insignificant and small, but I'm gonna make you into something that is so significant that not only will you be big, but you will house my presence wherever you go. Did you know the church

on Sunday morning is not the only place where the presence of God lives? You are the temple of the Holy Spirit. He has designed you to be strong in times where everyone else is weak, to carry the presence of God into your homes, into your job, and while everyone else is shaken by the earthquakes of society, you will not be shaken, for God has called you to be a pillar in his house. Come on somebody. There's an open door for you. In the future, you will be citizens in the city of my God, the new Jerusalem that comes down from heaven from my God. I've talked about this is ancient messages, but Jesus is dropping future prophetic previews, and he's saying there's a time coming when there's a whole new city coming down to earth that doesn't have all the stuff that we've got we're experiencing. Wars are still being fought over Jerusalem, but there is a day coming when there's a new city coming on earth, and you're going to be a citizen in it. Would you stand with me today? There is an open door in front of you from Jesus. Can you see it? Do you feel too small or too weak? Jesus is the one who has the key of David, and what he opens, no one can close, and what he closes, no one can open. If the door seems closed to you, are you fighting against God? Wanting something different in your world? You can't make it happen. What he closes, no one can open. Is there opposition that's trying to intimidate you, to stop you from walking through an open door? Is the enemy trying to get you to shut down a fear? There is a real enemy, and perhaps you need to do spiritual warfare God's way. You see, if you have closed doors, and you can't see an open door, the way up is down. Where we repent, we lower ourselves, we drop our guard, we say, I can't do it on my own. I can't do it without you Lord. True humility is saying, I recognize I can't open the door on my own. When it comes to our faith, you can't come to Jesus and save yourself. You come as a sinner. You come as you are. You come with all the corrupt DNA that you got inside of you, and you come to him as you are, and you say, I can't do it on my own. I believe you died for me, for my sin on the cross, and then you rose from the dead. I believe that you're alive right now, and

you surrender to Jesus. You don't do God a favor when you get saved. Oh no, no, no, no, no. You come to him, and you say, I'm so sorry. I was trying to run my life on my own, and it's failing. You come to him, and what he does, and you humble yourself, is there's a brand new door of salvation that you walk through. Humility leads to transformation. Let me say this. What if we all listened to what the spirit is saying to the church today. How would it affect your marriage? How would it affect your friendships? How would you approach your Monday? Are you going to step through those open doors? Don't lose heart, Jesus is with you. We're gonna sing here in a moment, but I just want you to think of this image of the open door. Jesus' words, I start off with in Revelation 3 here, verse seven, as he says, I am the one who is true and holy. I am the one who holds the key of David. And he talks, remember who it's from, it's from Jesus. He says, I have an open door for you. Not in the future, not in the past, I have an open door for you right now. How many want to see God's open doors in your life? Right now. Just lift your hands to heaven right now. Lord, we come before you, we come before you, and we just simply say, Lord, we're tired of all the little instant dribble messages we get all day long on our phones and from people around us. Lord, everything can sound cool and good

and natural in one moment, but Lord, that doesn't change us. You're the only one that changes us. So we come to you, and we ask, oh God, that you would write a new reel in our life, that you would write a new story, that you would open up the doors, and you would, Lord, first of all, you would be the object of our affection, knowing that you're returning. Our first thought is, Lord, come quickly, Jesus. I need to see you, I need to see you now. And Lord, in this moment, I pray, God, that you would open eyes to see you. Those that are away from you, those that are curious, I pray, God, that you would help them walk through the door of salvation, come to faith in you. I pray for those, Lord, that are in this place that have been walking with you for a long time, but Lord, their best memories of open doors are decades ago, they're years ago. But I pray for a fresh visitation of open eyes to see what you're saying to individuals. Lord, our purpose on the earth, why you planted us here, and that we would be able to walk through the open door you have for us right now.
