They were like prisons that we couldn't escape. But He came and He died and He rose. Those walls are rubble now. Remember those giants we called death and grave. They were like mountains that stood in our way. But He came and He died and He rose. Those giants are dead now. Come on, so let's sing out these truths together.

This is our God, this is who He is. He loves us. This is our God, this is what He does. He saves us. Pour the cross, beam the grave. Let heaven and earth proclaim. This is our God, King Jesus. Let's sing out together. Remember that fear that took our breath away. Faith so weak that we could barely breathe. But He heard every word, every whisper. Now those altars in the wilderness Tell the story of His faithfulness. Never once did He fail and He never will. This is our God, this is who He is. He loves us. Just look over the last 10 minutes together. This is our God and he's good. So we praise you, Father. We praise you, Son. Spirit, we just ask you to fill this room. I look back over my life. God, you have been faithful every day. Every morning, your mercies are new. There's not been a time I can look back and said, you left me, you abandoned me.

All I see is you held me together. Anybody else? And we need you to do that for us even now because you know what's going on in our hearts and our families and our marriages and with our kids, with our parents, with our bodies. You know it all. And without you, God, without your Son, Jesus, standing here with us in this moment, we are just done. But God, you have demonstrated your love for us. You're a lover and a forgiver and a savior. You give strength to the weak. You give hope to the hopeless. There's not one day where you have not been Almighty God. And you are this morning as well. So we just wanted to come in your house, not ours, your house and meet with you. Thank you for the words that we can express to you. We love you. In Jesus' name, I pray, amen, amen. And it's a bond I haven't had in many, many years. What they do up here is absolutely amazing. You know, bringing guys in together. When you bring in 500 guys strong and you bring in the word with that and you listen to these guys talk, and it's just, it's very, very powerful. And, you know, iron sharpens iron. And so when you can hold together and form as a team and just grow in your faith, and, you know, it's absolutely amazing. It's a very good place, not only because it's a safe environment, but we're all here for the same purpose. The amount of guys out here that are struggling with the same things, that if you just open up and talk to people, you're like, wow, never looked at it that way. And you can take a lot from just what other guys are going through. You know, you come out here though and you see guys that are kind of on their own or kind of solo. And those are guys you want to capture onto and bring in because I think those are the ones you can help even more. I think it's an amazing opportunity

to be able to just break your walls down. You're not worried about work, not worried about what's going on on the phone. So, but I don't know who I'm talking to, but there's a man here. I got 100 spots open for this retreat next month, and I know what's going on. You've been asking God for a long time. God, I need a sign, I need some strength, I need something to change. I need an identity, I need a purpose, I need some guilt gone, I need some shame gone, I need some healing to happen in my life. And we're gonna work through this conference together, and you're gonna look at the person that you said I do to, and you're gonna have an aha moment that goes, oh, that's why you're like that. And then she'll say, well, that's why you're like that. It'll go back and forth, it'll be great. But marriage changes over time. I've been married 42 years, and I'd like to say that's 42 of Robin's best years of her life. I was standing by the bed the other day. I'm in my underwear, getting ready to get in bed, and I have a CPAP machine on. I went, there's no mystery left anymore. She rolled over in bed, thought she was sleeping with Darth Vader. It was really a scary moment. Anybody else feel my pain in there? Yeah, thank you. Anyway, hey, so now here's what's really, really important. I think that when we get back this fall, following those series, Mary's series, we're gonna jump back into that unseen realm. We're gonna look at spiritual warfare, because if you're not paying attention in our world, especially at this season in our world, in this state, in this city, in this nation, if you don't think there's a spiritual element going on, then you're asleep at the wheel. I was gonna say dumb, but that's not very Christian-like,

but in my heart, you're dumb. Anyway, so there's that. Now, here's what's gonna happen. Three years ago, we went into spiritual warfare, and I made an off-the-cuff comment. You pick a fight with the devil, he fights back. Yeah, come on. I'm telling you, my family got hit by a truck, and three years later, God's healing some of that stuff, but I think it's because we walked into Satan's territory, and he says, no, you can't come here, and church, we're going there. Now, here's why it's so important. Two weeks from now, we have 1,100 students going up to Esther's Park for camp. They're gonna lean into the kingdom. Give it up for those students, all right? All right. Two weeks after that, we've got 500, 600 men are gonna go up the mountain. After our unfiltered conference, and now we're gonna really lean into it, some men are gonna get their stuff together around the kingdom of God. Our marriages are gonna lean in the next month after that. Here's why. We better have our stuff together, because Satan is gonna fight back, and if we're not ready, we're gonna get slaughtered.

So I encourage you to do all of those things. Rocky Mountain Men's Summit, pray for your kids going off to camp, sign up for this marriage conference. No matter what state your marriage is in, your marriage is not stagnant. It's either, it's getting better, or it's drifting apart, and if you don't realize that, it's drifting apart. All right? I love what you're doing in my life. I love what I see in the faces that I'm looking at. I know what's on the other side of these cameras. There's these campuses full of these people just leaning into you, holding onto you, loving you, knowing that they are finally loved. I pray for whatever man I was talking to that before he leaves this room, that he is committed to take a step to meet with you for his own heart. The original city of brotherly love

was founded 200 years before the time of Jesus by Attalus Philadelphus. The city was surrounded by beautiful vineyards and green pastures, but ancient historians tell us that the city itself had few permanent residents because of constant earthquakes in the area. Instead, people preferred to live in the countryside where structures could more easily be rebuilt. Little is known about the Jewish population of Philadelphia during the time of revelation, but the text points to intense persecution of Christians by Jews in the city. Despite earthquakes, persecution, and Roman rule, Jesus encourages the believers in Philadelphia and reminds them that despite their little strength, he is strong. He promises these beaten and bruised Christians that they will be a permanent pillar in the temple of God if they remain faithful and endure patiently for Jesus to return. This is Jesus' letter to the church in Philadelphia. Well, in this room, across all of our campuses, we wanna welcome you to Flatirons this weekend. I'm Pastor Carl, one of the pastors around here, and I am so grateful that you decided to worship with us this weekend for week six of seven letters to the churches in Revelation. And like we've been doing all series long, since this is actually God's living word, would you stand to your feet as we speak God's word?

Would you stand to your feet as we speak God's word? Revelation three, verse seven. And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write, the words of the holy one, the true one, the one who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens. I know your works. Behold, I've set before you an open door which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie. Behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet and they will learn that I have loved you. Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial is coming on the whole world to try those who dwell on the earth. I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have so that no one may seize your crown. The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it. I will write on him the name of my God, the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which my own name, he who has ears, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

You may be seated. There are certain moments that just catch you. For me, that's been happening the last couple of weeks. This song, this song that I haven't sung in years and years, and you know the song. Maybe you don't listen to it in the car, but you've heard about it. You've heard about it. You sang it in vacation Bible school where all my Baptist people. You maybe sang it in Sunday school or maybe a parent or a grandparent sang it to you before bed. It goes a little something like this. Jesus loves me. This I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong. They are weak, but he is, across all campuses, strong. Isn't it amazing that one of the first biblical truths that we learn is one of the hardest truths to keep believing? Children have no problem admitting they're weak. They're just little, you just kick them over and they fall over. But adults, we spend most of our lives trying to prove that we're strong. We want everybody to think that we've got it together. We want to seem like we're self-sufficient. We don't want anyone to know that we're struggling.

We spend our lives trying to convince ourselves and trying to convince everyone else around us that we're strong enough to raise the kids, strong enough to save the marriage, strong enough to overcome the addiction, to handle the bad news, to carry the pressure at work. But the older I get, the more and more I realize that that little Sunday school song wasn't just teaching children. It was teaching a deep theological concept. See, the world celebrates success, influence, and strength. Jesus celebrates dependence, faithfulness, and humility. The church in Philadelphia wasn't an impressive church, but it was a faithful one because they understood that their weakness highlights God's strength. Give you some more background on it. Philadelphia means brotherly love, which is hard to believe because the Eagles are terrible, but that's a whole nother thing. It was the youngest of the seven cities. It was the youngest of the seven churches. It was known as Little Athens because the temples and the museums were very similar to the ones in the big city of Athens. It was kind of like Blackhawk and Vegas, that kind of deal. It was the furthest east in the Roman Empire, known as the gateway to the east. It sat on one of the greatest highways in the entire Roman Empire, and this was all on purpose.

You see, Rome built Philadelphia to spread Greek language, culture, and philosophy. So Jesus plants his church there to spread the gospel. Same road, different king. Same strategy, different kingdom. But here's the deal. Rome wanted to export Hellenism. That's Greek culture. Jesus wanted to export the gospel. God strategically planted this small church in this city of influence on purpose, for purpose, and with purpose. See, every day, thousands and thousands of planes land safely all across the world. Nobody reports it. Nobody interrupts ESPN. Nobody trends it. The only flights that make the news are the ones that crash. And sometimes we think that about churches, that churches making the headlines usually are the ones that failed somewhere along the way. Meanwhile, this morning, there are over 300,000 faithful churches across America quietly gathering, quietly baptizing people, helping kids and students hear the gospel and find community, restoring marriages. People are praying, missionaries are being sent, and there's not a headline. But heaven notices. See, Philadelphia never made the headlines.

Yet Jesus was completely pleased with them. One of only two churches of the seven churches that he doesn't give any condemnation to. See, but if I told you about the great work of Pastor Larry Smith, who for 40 years served in Kansas, Colorado, and Phoenix, you'd have no idea who I was talking about. If I told you the steady work of a church planner in New Mexico, Matt Sellers, who has been leading in obscurity for almost 20 years while raising several kids with special needs, or if I told you about Pastor Bob Lehman, who gave a young Carl a chance over 20 years ago to step into the ministry and all the missionaries that he has sent across the world, you wouldn't have any idea. See, the same is true with so many of you. So many of us sitting in this room, sitting across our campuses, some of you feel like your life isn't making headlines either. So it must mean you lack purpose or influence. Yet Jesus sees an extraordinary faithfulness and says to you, and says to the church in Philadelphia, don't give up. Don't give up. In Revelation, In chapter three, verse seven, look at what the Lord says. He says, and to the angels, excuse me, to the angel of the church in Philadelphia,

write this, and here's the word. The words of the Holy One, the true one, who has the key of David. See, Jesus says, number one, I'm holy. Number two, I'm true. Number three, I am the one who holds the key of David. Holy meaning set apart. Jesus is set apart, and nothing and no one, no entity, no government, no leader is like him. He says that he is what is true. That means there is no other side to him. There's no falsehood, there's no second guessing, there's no adjustment. He is the singular truth of all things in this world and the next, and then he says he holds the key of David. See, this is interesting because this key wouldn't have been like the key for your house. This wasn't a little key you put in your pocket. This would have been a giant lever that would open any door in David's house. This is actually a callback to the book of Isaiah where the prophet is handling a steward in David's house, and this steward isn't doing what he's supposed to do. He's not doing his job. So King David takes the key from him and gives it to another steward, and now that new steward has all the access to David's kingdom. Jesus says he has the ultimate responsibility of access to the kingdom of God.

One key, and because of that one key, I want you to write this down in your notes, we should trust Christ's authority. We are to trust Christ's authority. That passage, it reads like this, and I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open and none shall shut, and he shall shut and none shall open. Jesus reiterates this in John 10, nine, where he says, I am the door. If anyone enters through me, he will be saved, and he will go in and out and find pasture. I grew up with seven siblings. I'm one of eight kids, and this is like in the 80s. We were what they call latchkey kids. Any of the latchkey kids in this room across these campuses? Yeah, yeah, a latchkey kid. You remember when your parent would tie the key to your house on a string and put it around your neck and say, if you don't come home with this, I am gonna kill you. Anybody else remember that? Now, because there were so many of us, mom wasn't gonna make eight keys. There was one key, and whoever held that key, they got to determine whose friends got to come in the house after school.

See, only the person with the key determines who gets to come in. So many of us are so concerned about who allows us to have access to God, who allows us to have access to things in this world that we desire. See, the bank controls whether or not you get the new house. The boss controls whether or not you get the promotion, and we do the same thing when it comes to our spiritual connection to God. Is it my small group leader? Is it the pastor? Is it my spouse that allows me to have access to God? Is it how much good I do or how much I give that gets me access to God? Jesus wants to make it clear to us and to the church in Philadelphia, there's only one holy one, one true one that gives us access. Therefore, Jesus has the key, and we should trust his ultimate authority. So when you and I try to force doors open in our life, we're going against the will of God. Friends, if the job hasn't come yet, stop trying to force the door open. If that certain someone that you are waiting to enter into your life hasn't come yet, stop trying to force the door open. If that prodigal son or that prodigal daughter

has not yet returned, stop trying to force the door open. Rather, trust the one holding the key. Recently, my wife Jen and I, we were sitting around discussing prayer and godly things because we're such a holy couple, not really, right?
