I'm going to use my people, call them out as a priesthood And literally, my dad went from being a slave to a souljourner Because he didn't know what that meant And I started a little by little noticing incredible changes in my father Probably one of the most important things I'm going to trust my mommy growing up in my dad's house And I continue this legacy on my own It's a verse in Psalms 138 verse 2 It says you have magnified your word even above all your name And I carry that with me because I think maybe the most important thing my dad has passed on to me Is to value and love the word of God the way that God loves his word Weren't for God preserving and writing that book We wouldn't know that name And it has become probably the most important core value in our household Is to continue the legacy of loving God's word Because when you love it right, when you study it right You're going to make sure that your life and your behavior and your mindset And everything that you do is in alignment with his word And because you know the way that God values it And you want to value it the way that he does I see my dad reflect Christ definitely by how he reads his word Like day and night, like just putting in constant time into studying God's word Reading God's word, how he loves my mom And through how he treats her, how he loves her, and how they both steward our family I think if there was anything from their legacy that I was going to That I would bring forward to mine just pastoring the church Whether that's actually as a pastor or as a deacon Just being a good steward of God's word and teaching it to others The kind of men that God's calling us to be We need to be men who are constantly reevaluating
The things that we're doing our habits in Corinth but when I became a man, I put away childish things. And so I think for a man, we always need to be constantly through the Word of God, evaluating what things are holding me down, what things are keeping me back to reject passivity and to rise to the occasion. Stand up, be bold, don't be afraid to take big steps. To follow him, don't get comfortable being safe. Be willing to do dangerous things for him, for his kingdom, for his glory." Yes, let's go. Man, if you have a copy of God's Word and I hope that you do, once you find the book of 1 Corinthians chapter 14, and I just love that story. I mean, what an incredible decision that Mark Magoie's father made. I just love the Magoie family and I'm just so, just in all really of what happens when a man who is far from God surrenders his life to God begins to make the Word of God and the ways of God central in his life and the generational impact that that has. And I'm praying that men in this season of abundant life that are far from God, that they would come to know God, they would surrender their life to God, make the Word of God in the way of God central in their life and it would reverberate throughout the generations of their family. And I pray that there would be many more Magoie stories at abundant life and I don't know what you brought in here this morning, but man, I'm so excited that you are here to be able to get into God's Word
and we're speaking directly to the heart of men this month and we're praying that God would do something new in the lives of men at our church, at abundant life. And we're asking that men would rise up in their God-given call to be the man of God that he's made you to be and you have no idea the generational impact that you will have when you say, yes, is surrender your life to Jesus, make the Word of God in the way of God central in your life. And that's what we're running after this month. I want every man to stand to his feet right now and I wanna continue just to rehearse and recite this definition of manhood that we've been given. Here's what we've been saying and we've been saying this and I want us all to say it on the count of three, all right? So one, two, three, a real man rejects passivity. There you go, leads courageously, God's reward. Let's put your hands together for these men, every man. You may be seated, thank you so much. And man, this is such an important thing for us to run towards because if you're anything like me, you've been brought into this world in a current of culture that is defining manhood in a way that is sometimes antithetical to the Word of God. And so there can be a lot of confusion in the house and so for me, like I grew up, much like many of you, just running after what my family taught me was a man and then I started reading the Bible, surrendering my life to Jesus. And I realized that there were some inconsistencies
with what my father and what the men in my life had modeled for me and I had a decision to make. Do I wanna perpetuate a version of manhood that is familiar to me or do I wanna be God's man? And I think every one of the men that are here this morning have to stand at that intersection and ask the question, do I wanna be my own man? Do I wanna be a man of the culture or do I wanna be God's man? And I'm praying that every one of us would come to the conclusion that we want to be God's man. What does it mean to be God's man? Well, we can talk about the different layers of what the Bible has to say, but if you need an image to focus on and a person to follow when it comes to being God's man, you need to look no other than to the person Jesus Christ. That if you wanna be the man that rejects passivity and leads courageously and accepts responsibility and expects a greater reward and you're looking like art, who's somebody I can follow that really modeled that well, look no further than Jesus Christ himself. He is the quintessence of what it means to be God's man. He is the God man. And so we wanna follow Jesus and some of the things that Jesus did when you look at the way that he rocked it in this world, Jesus, he functioned as a pastor. He functioned as a priest. He functioned as a prophet and as a king. And those are the four things that we've really been running
after and calling men to do and learn what it means to do in this month, because we've been saying this, that God has called every man to be a pastor. We talked about that week one, to be a priest. We talked about that last week, a prophet and a king. And this morning we're gonna be talking about what does it mean for a man to be the prophet. If you're new to that word, prophet, and maybe you have some different ideas of what it means to be a prophet, let me just give you a working definition so that we can all get on the same page. This morning they prophet is a person who speaks God's truth to others. Let me run that back again. A prophet is a person who speaks God's truth to others. And part of being a man, if you wanna be God's man, is leaning into the role of the prophet. And we're gonna talk about three things that a prophet does, and I'm gonna invite all of you to try those on before we leave this morning. Now, I love the Apostle Paul because he's really helping people figure out what does it mean to follow Jesus? They had their life changed by Jesus, but they really didn't understand functionally what that meant. And in 1 Corinthians, Paul basically walks us through this train of logic where he says, "Man, you gotta surrender your life to Christ."
Paul says, "I didn't come to you with loftiness of speech "and the wisdom of man. "I came to you in really the foolishness of the cross." He said, "I sought to know Christ and him crucified." And he's just reminding the people in Corinth that that's where it begins. And then he begins to talk about what does your life look like practically? And he really gets to this section that's one of the highlights of 1 Corinthians. It's in chapter 13, we broke it down just about a month ago. He says, "Man, I love all of the things "that you could model, that are near and dear "to the heart of God out of all of the characteristics "that you could reflect, that are near and dear "to the heart of Christ." He would say, "Man, the greatest one is love." And so he says, "Man, no Christ put on love." And then he begins to say, "And there's some other things "that you need to lean into." And one of those is prophecy. He says this, "I really, I wish that many of you "would prophesy, because when you prophesy, "when you speak the word of God to the people, "it edifies the body." And here's what he says that a prophet does in particular in 1 Corinthians 14, verse three. He says, "But he who prophesies speaks edification "and exhortation and comfort to men." Now notice that Paul doesn't say he who prophesies
predicts the future. He who prophesies gives you the numbers for the power ball. You get the ticket and you're becoming a millionaire. That's not what he says. Notice he doesn't say he who prophesies, manifests the good vibes. It tells you you're gonna get the Tesla with all of the different flipping capabilities and it's gonna be yours and I name it and I claim it. That's not what Paul is saying here. He's making prophecy. He's really demystifying it. And some of you have come and hear him. And that's really your image of what it means to be prophetic. But the word of God makes it really, really clear. What am I doing when I'm playing the role of prophet to the people around me while I'm edifying them? I'm exhorting them and I'm comforting them with the word of God. And so that's really what we're gonna look at this morning. What does it mean to play the role of the prophet? Well, you do those three things. Paul says that you edify, point number one, you edify. This word edification, it means that you build people up with your words. It literally means when you look at the etymology of edify in the Greek, it means to build your house. You build your house with your words. It's a man of God, if you wanna play that role,
if you wanna play the man and be the man, use your words to build up the people around you. I wonder, do you use your words to build up the people around you? Are you building your house or are you tearing your house down? I think that every man needs to come to the point in his life where he really like officially gets his man badge by getting a power tool set. You know what I'm saying? Like I remember, I remember early on I was newlywed, I was thinking I was married about 10 years before I saved up enough money to really get a full Milwaukee tool set, praise God, you know? And so I got some gift cards, so I'm depot and I did one to build your own kits. And so man, I got the sawsall, the oscillating saw, in case I need that. I got the skill saw, you know, I got the impact driver and I got the power drill and I got a flashlight. I could build a house with this set, man. I'm ready to go, so if you need some work done, I'm just kidding. But here's what I've learned is though when I have these tools that can build things, I think my track record is I've used these tools to tear more stuff up than build stuff up, you know? Every man needs some power tools so that he can build some stuff. But the problem is, is it with the same power tools that you want to build some stuff,
you also can tear some stuff up. What's the point? I think that every man comes prepackaged with a power tool kit in his mouth. What I mean by that is that God has hardwired you with the ability to build things up or tear things down with your words. Here's what it says in Proverbs 18, 21. It says the power of life and death is in the tongue. Man, there is something significant about your words, especially to those that you are in close proximity to. And if you want to be the prophet to your people, to those that are in your family, your wife, your kids, your mother, your father, your siblings, to those that are in your community, you probably got at least one good friend, hopefully. Maybe a couple that you do life with, to those that are, that you work with. Maybe you're a boss and you have, And I believe that every man has relationships that are in close proximity to him and his words carry much weight in those relationships. And so you have to ask yourself, how am I using my words? How am I playing the role of the prophet to build the people up around me? Many of you, you do this so well. You build the people up around you, you say things like, I love you. I'm proud of you, you're good at, you're beautiful.
You use your words to build people up unfortunately with the same mouth, you also use your words to tear people down. And I think historically we could fill in the category of what it means to tear someone down, to slander them, to belittle them. I know for me, I've used my words to belittle people around me that I love and it was really in an unconventional way. What I mean by that is, man, I love sarcasm. It's like a love language of mine. I think it's a gift, you know? And so just quick-witted and I'll find something that's a little off and then I'll just exploit it and it's so fun, you know? And I remember this sarcastic gift and sarcastic intermingling with my buddies growing up. It was just kind of friendly and that sort of thing. So I thought, and then I got married. And I was like, you know what? I've talked to my college roommates this way. I'm gonna talk to my wife this way. It's gonna be great, it's gonna be great. She's gonna love it. And then it didn't take long for my wife to say, "Hey, I'm not one of your college roommates "and I would appreciate it if you quit speaking to me "like I am one." And I had a decision to make when she gave me that feedback. I could reject responsibility or I could accept responsibility
like a real man and go, "I'm sorry, baby, "I will quit speaking to you in such a way." And then I started learning that sarcasm comes from the same root word as a sarcophagus. And a sarcophagus is a flesh-eating box. And so I was literally eating the flesh away of those around me in the name of humor. Listen, I think there's a right place for some of that. But when it gets the mainstream of your words, all you're doing is just chipping away, chipping away, chipping away at the people around you. Are you building people up with your words or are you tearing them down? Some of you, your power tools, so to speak, the batteries are dead. What I mean by that is that the volume of your silence to those around you is deafening. And you're not saying anything bad to them, but you're not saying anything good to them. And what good are power tools if their battery is not connected? They're powerless. You have to get the power connected to them and you have to use them to build people up. Are you building people up around you or are you tearing them down? I think one of the earliest examples of somebody that got this right in the Bible is none other than the man Adam, the first man. I didn't know this.
I thought Adam named Eve before the fall. But Adam actually named Eve after the fall. If you don't know the chronology of events, God created Adam and Eve, everything was good. They sinned and in Genesis three, God pronounces curses upon the serpent, upon the woman, and upon the man, it kicks him out of the garden. And this is when Adam now looks at Eve. And here's what it says. It says in Genesis three, 20, and Adam called his wife's name, Eve, because she was the mother of the living. Now, what's the significance of this? Adam was choosing to use his words not to belittle, not to condemn, but to build up. But notice that Adam looks at this woman and he doesn't say, I'm gonna name you, you shouldn't eat from that tree, you know? (congregation laughing) I'm gonna name you, how could you, right? That's not what he does. He knows her shortcomings, he knows her shame, he knows her past, he knows her problems, yet he calls her by an honorable name. He speaks a word, a name of life. He says, you know what? I'm not gonna name you by any of those things. I'm gonna name you by the joy that you bring into my life. Take notes, man. If you're here and you're a married man, you know your wife. You know all of the flaws that she has.
You know her shame, you know her past, you know her issues, you know her shortcomings. But what do you choose to speak into her life? And if you wanna be the man, if you wanna be God's man, you prophesy words of edification in her life, you build up your house. Paul says that when you prophesy, you need to speak edification and exhortation and comfort to men. Point number two, if you're taking notes, you can write this down, you gotta exhort. If you're gonna prophesy, you are exhorting the people around you. You're edifying your wife, your kids, your family, you're edifying your coworkers. You're also exhorting that same group of people. What does it mean to exhort? It means that you strongly urge or advise to put it this way. It could mean that you coach up and we need to coach up our people. We need to get around the people that are in our life, that God has put in our life and raise their lid. We need to help them become all that they can be. Coach, I don't know if you played sports or not, but I had the privilege of playing sports with a number of different coaches. Some of my favorite coaches were the ones that I had close proximity with, and they challenged me to become a better athlete. See, coaches, they have this ability to envision what does it mean to succeed? They can envision and they can call you to become even what you can't see that you can become in the present. They strongly urge you.
Some of my coaches had to grab my face mask and they said, "You got this, get in there, get after it. You're better than that." They called me up by calling me out. I grew up in Texas and the team I grew up cheering for, none of them, the Dallas Cowboys, God's team. I'm a Chiefs fan now because there's a Texas man at the helm. But growing up, I was a Cowboys fan and one of the most beloved coaches in all of Cowboys history is Tom Landry. Tom Landry has this famous quote and I love this. He says this, "I made my athletes do what they did not want to do so that they could become the athletes they always dreamed they could be." And that's what a coach does. He exhorts them. He says, "I'm going to challenge you. I'm going to put pressure on you so that you can achieve your full potential." That's what a coach does and when we're prophesying over our people, we are envisioning who they can be and we're raising their lid, so to speak. So, men, let me ask you, what vision do you have for the people around you? In five years, what do you expect of your wife? What do you hope that she would be flourishing, thriving? In five years, what is your vision for your kids? What sort of things will they have learned? What sort of practices will they have put in place? In five years, what are you hoping that would happen with your co-workers or your employees or your community group and are you envisioning who they could become and are you seeking to speak into their life? I think one of the greatest people that did this in the Scripture was a guy named Paul to a guy named Timothy. I mean, you read about their relationship and it just seems like Paul continued to call Timothy up.
The most famous part is in 1 Timothy 4-12 and he says, "Timothy, don't let anyone look down on you because you're young," but you said an example, Timothy. One of the things I love about Paul and Timothy's relationship is it wasn't a blood relationship. And I can't tell you how many men in my life, God has brought in my life, that have called me up, that have exhorted me to be the man and they weren't my family. And so this called to be the prophet man of God. It can extend beyond your household, into the household of faith. And we need more Paul's speaking a word of exhortation over the Timothy's in our body. We need more men of God that will use their God-given mantle as the prophet of the household of faith, speaking into the next generation and calling up the young men to be the man too. And this is such a great example of what it means to coach practically. But what are we doing when it comes to our life? Like how do we coach? I wanted you to think about the way that you coach somebody in life is really no different than the way you coach somebody in sports. There's like three phases of coaching. You're on the field coaching, you're on the sideline coaching, or you're in the press box coaching. When you're on the field, it's hands on. This is typically you coaching young kids and you're saying, hey, I'm going to be real routine, real rigid. I'm going to teach you morals, authority, obedience. And we moved to the sideline a little more distance. And you're saying, hey, we're going to have rhythms. We're going to have a little bit of flexibility. I'm going to teach you your identity. I'm going to teach you responsibility. I'm going to teach you critical thinking so that on the field of life, you can make your own decisions, but I'm right here.
I'm still coaching you. You can hear me. And then we moved to the press box as our people get older. And this is where you're saying, hey, I can see the field of life. I have perspective that you don't have. You still need me in your life. But I'm now a little bit further away. I believe in you as what you're saying. I'm going to give you space. And I'm going to ask good questions so that I can continue to prophesy in your life by exhorting you to be the best that you can be. Paul says, when we prophesy, we edify people. We exhort them. And then finally, he says that we comfort them again. Back in verse three, he says, but he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. Point number three. And finally, if you're taking notes, you can write this down. You got to comfort. You have to comfort. This word comfort, it literally means to give support. That, man, when we are prophesying, what we're doing practically is we are using our words to comfort those around us. And if you wanna play the role of the prophet in your home, you need to deploy words of comfort. So let me just ask you, are you speaking words of comfort in your home? This is so hard. It's hard for me to do this.
This is not my nature. We were playing volleyball yesterday with my girls. And I was like, you know what? They need to see Dad spike the volleyball. And so we're just like in a circle. And so I just like throw it up and spike it. And it was like I was aiming right from my nine-year-old's face because that's exactly where the ball went. It just hit her face, the glasses went off. And I was like, she should've had her hands up. (audience laughing) Like I didn't even think to say, oh, baby, you okay? I was like, yeah, get your hands up, man. Come on, what are we doing here? All right, who wants this next? You know? (audience laughing) That's my knee-jerk reaction. What's wrong with me? You know? And then like she held it together and then she just like went and sat down. She was like, I'm done. And I was like, you know, oh yeah. I need to go sit next to her and say nice things, you know? And so I was like, you know what? Y'all just keep playing, you know? And I just went and sat next to her. And I still struggled with, I was like, so it's a nice day today, you know?
(audience laughing) I think five hours later, I was like, you know, I never said I'm sorry or you okay, you know? We're driving home and I was like, hey, babe. Yeah, I missed it earlier. I hit you, but I missed it, you know? And I apologize and I don't know what's wrong with me when it comes to that, but that's just not my nature. So when I read this, I'm being challenged too. How do I comfort? And I want to be a place of comfort. Sorry, are you speaking words of comfort when your people are hurting? What are you saying? Like, do they even see you as a source of comfort? Man, let me come at you for a minute. Some of you are so busy or you're so distracted or disengaged that the people around you don't even consider you as a source of comfort in their life and they're getting more comfort out of their pillow than their pops because you're just disconnected. You're disengaged and the people in your life, they need you to speak words of comfort in their time, a need. Well, how do you do that practically? How do you comfort your people? Well, the first thing you do, how do you comfort your people? You got to hug your people. You got to hug them.
I'm so down on as your daughters get older, the more distant you become as a father, all right? I've got three daughters. Now the youngest one, she's real like easy to grab a hold of and I've seen this and I've also read studies on this as daughters become women, dads kind of disengaged. Man, that's wack. You need to hug your girls. You need to hug your sons. You need to let them know that you love them because if I don't hug my daughters, some other hairy leg thing's gonna hug them, all right? And I ain't trying to get there too soon, okay? And so one of the ways I let them know I'm a safe person. I'm a source of comfort is I just hug them. I let them know, I love them. Man, you need to hug your wives with no strings attached, all right? You need to hug her and not be thinking about the end zone, okay? Just let her know you love her. That's it. You want to comfort her. Bring security to her. The second thing you do to comfort your people is you empathize with them. When something happens, you say, I'm sorry that happened. When somebody hits them in the face with a volleyball, you go, hey, I'm sorry that that happened. I missed it.
You don't get to the whiteboard, so to speak, and start problem solving when your people come and say, man, this hurt, you don't go, all right, who hurts you? What's their name? All right, and then here's what we're gonna do to them. One, two, three, that's not what you do first. You say, I'm so sorry that happened. Let me tell you about the time that that happened to me too. And you empathize with them. The third thing you do is you remind them of the truth. You say, hey, God's with you. If you don't know much about God, just say, you know what? I'm so sorry that it happened. But God loves you. That's how you need to know. God loves them. Just tell them that, remind them of that truth. That's what it means to prophesy in their life and then pray for them. You pray for them. Prayer is the great expression of comfort. And men, your people need to hear you pray out loud for them. Don't just be in a situation and say, hey, well, you know what, I'll be praying for that for you. No, stop and say the prayer. Use your words. Speak a word of comfort over them. You need to play the man. Be the prophet in your household. Some of you, here in a second,
I'm gonna give you a chance to speak some words of life over your people this morning. And some of you, before you prophesy, you're gonna need to apologize. see every one of us is coming here this morning and We have relationships with people and we all start with like a blank canvas But some of you the people around you you've been critical to them and you crinkled them a little bit You've been sarcastic to them and you've left a mark on them You've said something destructive to them and and you you think you know what I've said some things I shouldn't have said but you know what I'm gonna apologize and we're just gonna kind of smooth it all out with my apology Thinking that it's all good But they're still the residue of your wounds upon their life and Don't assume that up an apology is gonna make up for an injury And so you can apologize. That's a good place to start But if you've come in here and this is you and you've been hurt by somebody that you love one of the things that you're gonna have to do Is that you're gonna have to receive the great affirmation from God Almighty? The great affirmation is really God the Father Telling us or modeling for us what it means to be the prophet to the people you love It says this that God the father after Jesus was baptized There was a voice that came from heaven and Matthew 3 17 and God the father says this is my beloved son and whom I'm well-pleased That the father affirmed the son and I love this before the son ever did anything before he ever did any ministry God says this is my beloved son in whom I'm well-pleased I picked up on this with my kids and so like I'll be putting them to bed and I'll ask him Hey, do you know why daddy loves you and when they were young they were like because I'm smart I'm like no you are smart. That's not why because I'm obedient. No, you are obedient But that's not why those things are important But that's not why I love you and I would just remind them the reason why I love you is because you're you and God gave you to me and
Nothing can change that and you can't do anything to earn it or You can't do anything to lose it And so God the father is affirming Jesus before he ever did a miracle before he ever taught a sermon and the order is Important. This is the great affirmation God the father speaking a word of edification over his son in the only way that you can Allow this to be made new is to receive this great affirmation in your life and allow God the father God the father Blotscubing to allow God the father to speak the same word to you And so let me ask you have you received that great affirmation Because when you put your faith and trust in Jesus what happens is that you are covered in the righteousness of Christ And so God looks at you the same way that he looks at Jesus and he says of you you are his beloved in whom he is well-pleased and this is the gospel the good news that you can have new Life in Christ that you don't have to be the sum total of the words that were spoken over you by somebody You can be the sum total of the words spoken over you by God almighty and be made new and So this morning How are you using your words? How are you speaking life over the people in your life? and Right now I want to give you a chance to do that Here in a second the band's gonna take the stage and and we're going to I'm gonna pray actually the band's gonna take the stage. I'm gonna pray and when I say men I want every man that has his people here I want you to move towards them and I'm gonna give you a simple script first of all you may need to Apologize first and then you're gonna move towards them and you're gonna say something like this This is a remixed version of this. I love you and I'm happy you're in my life You're gonna speak a word of affirmation over them You're gonna look at them and say I love you and I'm happy that you're in my life and then After we give us just a little bit of space to do that at every location We're all gonna stand and we're gonna sing a prophetic song We're gonna speak the name of Jesus over the people around us And so if you're here with your people you can move towards them if you have some men that are in your life
That you want to speak towards them and if you're here with I don't know I mean you can just leverage this moment we want that we want to stir up this prophetic word of life It's so I'm gonna pray and when I say amen I want you to move towards the people and have just a little bit of a moment for you to move towards them and speak towards them Speak to them and then we're all gonna stand and sing before we get out of here if you would join me in a word of prayer Lord Jesus, thank you so much for today God we thank you for your goodness in our life Gonna pray that you would speak now through us that you would help us to reverberate the great Affirmation to the people around us Gonna pray that you would raise up the prophets in the house that the men of God would speak the word of God to their people Right now and so God I pray that you would help us to reject passivity and that we would move towards those that you and we would speak words of life. And God, I pray that as we sing about your name over everyone here, that there would be power in that name, proclaimed over all of our situations. And it's in Jesus' name, I pray, amen. ♪ I just wanna speak the name of Jesus ♪ ♪ Over every heart and every mind ♪ ♪ 'Cause I know there is peace within your presence ♪ ♪ I speak Jesus ♪ ♪ I just wanna speak the name of Jesus ♪ ♪ 'Til every dark addiction starts to break ♪ ♪ The clearing there is hope and there is freedom ♪ ♪ I speak Jesus ♪ ♪ Your name is love ♪ ♪ Your name is she ♪ ♪ Your name is life ♪ ♪ Break every struggle ♪ ♪ Shut through the shadows ♪ ♪ But life ♪
