I'm standing here with my good friend Salul and he's one of our executive pastors here. But I'm really excited about something because as you know, we've had a bilingual service in the past, Rivive, right? Yes. That shifted to Pantano Español about a year ago. We were doing me and AI, which is crazy, made me fully

lingual in Spanish, right? But now we're really excited because Salul has jumped back in. He's preaching in Spanish in our Español service. And currently that meets at 10.30 on Sunday mornings. If you've been to 10.30 at Pantano, you know something about our church. You can't park here. And we've been talking to our Hispanic community about how to reach more of them. Yes. And you have a goal. What's the goal? The goal is that in a few years we can reach a thousand Latinos in our city. And right now their goal is to get to 150. Yes. And they're going to get there probably in the next week because that's the goal. Yes. Everybody helped that. But tell me about this relaunch that's getting ready to happen because this is a campus of ours. So tell us what's going to happen in September. Well, the things I've learned under your leadership is healthy churches grow. And this is a great opportunity for us to reach people and bite people. And I think the biggest opportunity was the parking. It was limiting our growth. So as we talk to families in Español and we talk to people, we realize that we have to move off the 10.30 because God is so blessing our church right now. There's an exponential growth happening at the 10.30 service that it's very noticeable. But we have to move to a 3 p.m. in order for us to actually, you know, encounter the same mission. We want to reach one more. We want to love people to Jesus. We want to do all those things, but we can't do it at the 10.30 service. So the biggest opportunity for us is 3 p.m. on Sundays. So when does that start? It starts on September 13th. September 13th, we go to 3 p.m. still in the student union for right now. For right now. With the goal to get into the auditorium at our Hot N Road campus. But do me a favor, Pantano. One, if you know Spanish-speaking folks, if that's our main language, get them to our Spanish-speaking service. Pantano, Español, it's going to be amazing. And if not, pray for this. Pray that we would reach not just hundreds, not just thousands,

but all of our Spanish-speaking community here in Tucson and beyond. We want to be a lighthouse for them right here at Pantano. So be praying for that. We can't wait to see what God does. If you ever watched last comic standing on TV, he was on the first season of that. He travels the country now and does stuff in churches and in communities, and him and his wife do a marriage/comedy deal for couples. And so that is going to be here. So with that said, we are about to dive into a brand new series today called "Line in the Sea." Now we've got a bunch of people online with us. We got Jeff and Sue in Montana with us. We've got Gospel Rescue Mission with us. We've got everybody on the Pando app and prisons all over the United States and Benson is with us. So let's welcome our online campus in, if you would today. (audience applauding) And as we kick off this series called "Line in the Sand," I need you to understand why we are doing this series because the heart behind this is what matters the most because there are people all over Tucson, all over Benson, all over our county and our states

that they actually, maybe even sitting in this room, that have drawn a line in the sand when it comes to Christianity. And maybe you're here exploring. And maybe you've said things or heard things like this. They'll say, because of this fill-in-the-blank issue, I will not believe. Or because of this question, I will not follow Jesus. Or because Christians have handled subjects so poorly, I want nothing to do with the church. Let me ask you, how many of you have heard some similar statement somewhere around you in your life about these kind of things? See, me too. So they've drawn a line in the sand and said, I won't cross this line into faith. Now, maybe the line is hypocrisy. We're gonna talk about that in a couple of weeks. Maybe the line is suffering. Maybe it's sexuality. By the way, next week, we're talking about sexual ethic. You may have seen the parental warning. If you don't remember that and you bring your kid, get ready for some amazing conversations in the car on the way home. Okay? Good education for your kids. It'll be biblical, I promise you, okay? Maybe for you, it's misogyny. We're gonna talk about that in a few weeks.

Maybe it's the reality of hell. Maybe you drew it after being hurt by someone who claimed to represent Jesus. See, your objection may be an honest question that never received an honest answer. So I want you to hear me clearly. If you're part of a painter, you just showed up today. This is what you need to hear clearly is you're welcome here with your questions. We're okay with it. You're okay to come here with your doubts, with your cautions, maybe even a little bit of the angst in your soul. See, Pantano's not afraid of hard questions because Jesus isn't threatened by honest questions either. So you can come here with honest questions. Now, those of you that know Jesus, let me tell you what the series is not. It's not six weeks of ammunition for you to win debates with. It's not what we're doing. Nobody has ever been argued into feeling loved. I'm just curious, you've ever been argued into feeling loved? But you know what, you're gonna love me. Oh, okay. You wanna do that? Yeah, that's not how love works. See, we wanna approach these lines. People have drawn in the sand by listening carefully,

telling the truth humbly, and then erase every unnecessary barrier so people can meet Jesus. That's the goal. That's why we're doing this series. So for those of us who follow Jesus, the series is going to equip us for conversations at work, at school, at family dinners, maybe across the fence in the backyard, unless your fence is too high, then from the ladder above the fence in the backyard. Like, I want us to listen well. I want us to think clearly and speak truthfully and love extravagantly. That's what this whole series is setting us up for. So we're never gonna use truth as a weapon to keep people away. Truth is not a weapon to keep people away. We use it as a road sign pointing people towards Jesus is what we wanna use it for. And so, we're starting with one of the biggest lines in the sand that people struggle to get past. And here it is, is that Christianity is too exclusive. It's too exclusive, like, how could Jesus be the only way? I remember when I first moved to Tucson, now you need to know something about me, I'm pretty good directionally. I'm not good at a lot of things, but if I've gotten somewhere or once, I can usually get back there. Anybody else like that? I'm all my directional people.

You know what people like us do? We marry people the opposite of that. You all are looking at each other, going, "Yep, it's you." Now when I first came here, I was flying back and forth for a few months until my daughter got out of school, so I'd been here for like a month and spent 15 days and a friend here let me use their Jeep that looked like my Jeep, and so I kind of felt like I was at home, and I'd been one place when I was here before, and so I came back the next month and I'm like, "I know how to get there," even though it was in the GPS. Now my GPS, I changed it to a British man, because I feel like if you have a British voice, I'll do whatever you tell me to, and on top of that, I've got three ladies in my house that tell me how to drive, I didn't need one more while I was out on the road, okay? It's just true, and so my little British guy says very kindly that I need to turn on a certain road, and I said, "No." I argued with a British guy, out loud, I don't know if you argue with your GPS out loud, I do, I think that means I'm crazy, and it was like turn here and I went, "No, that's not the right way," and then I drove a little further, it was like, "Make a U-turn and go turn there," and I'm like, "Nope, sorry British guy, I'm out," here's what I didn't realize is because the British guy thought he knew better than me, and you know what the truth was? He did. So, I drove around Tucson for 45 minutes in neighborhoods I'd never seen before, knowing I knew the right way. I sincerely, confidently knew I was going the right way, and the GPS kept going, rerouting. I felt like Michael Scott in that episode of The Office, where he drives into a pond because the GPS told him to, and that wasn't going to be me. I'm not driving into any ponds, and then I realize I live in Tucson, there are no ponds because there's no water here, so I was ignoring this, and here's what I thought I knew better, and I didn't. The GPS knew better.

See, sincerity can't make the wrong road arrive at the right destination. I sincerely thought I was going the right way. I just never got to the right place. See, loving directions are clear directions. Like, don't miss that, loving directions are clear directions, so Jesus says there's one way to God. Jesus says it. We're going to unpack it in a minute. Now, if you only hear that, some people go, "That sounds a little arrogant. That sounds a little unloving." Like, how can Christians say their way is right? You ever heard that question? Like I've heard that question a million times. People say things like, "Aren't religions just different roads up the same mountain? Would a loving God provide only one way?" I think those are fair questions, and here's why I think they're fair, because I think we've all had them. I've had them. I've asked them. So before deciding whether a claim is offensive that you hear about in Scripture, hear what Jesus said in context first. Context matters. If you've been around here, we talk about this a lot. If you only read one Scripture and pull it out, you're pulling it out of context if you don't know what's around it. That's why we stitch weird Scriptures on pillows and put them in that room nobody goes in. And you read it, and you're like, "Why don't you put that on a pillow? Oh, it's my life first." Did you read the whole chapter? Because that's not what it means.

See, you've got to put Jesus in context, because we've taken this one out of context, and if it's out of context, it sounds a little arrogant, it sounds a little unloving. But John 14, six, where it comes from, if you got Bibles, go to John 14. Just hold on to it. We're going to get there. But it wasn't a point of debate that Jesus was giving in John 14. It was actually comfort for some frightened friends is what he's doing in John 14. So we all live, every one of us live by exclusive truth claims, whether you believe it or not. If your doctor says to you, "This treatment will save your life," you don't call them narrow-minded. You don't go, "Well, wait a minute, time out. Why don't we try all medicines to make sure they all work?" No, if the doctor says, "This will save your life," you get real narrow-minded real quick, right? You're like, "Okay, I'm in." If I invited all of pain tender to my house, now that would be a nightmare, right? Because I don't have a house this big, I have a house like this big. But if I invited you all to my house, and I said, "Hey, come to my house," and you're like, "How do I get there?" And I just said, "Hey, you know what? You take whatever road you want, hope you make it." the worst roads ever built. But if I just said, hey, you just take whatever road feels good to you, doesn't that sound a little weird? You're like, how would we get to your house? Well, first of all, you wouldn't. But if you drive any direction that feels true to you, I can't tell you, that's not loving. That's useless to you. If I tell you, drive any road that feels good to get to my house, that's not loving.

That's just useless information for you. And here's what we need to understand, is that's what a lot of us do when it comes to these claims. See, major religions disagree about a lot of things, about who God is, about what's wrong with humanity, how we're made right, and even who Jesus is. There's a lot of disagreement. Contradictory claims may all be wrong, but here's what I do know. They can't all be right at the same time. They may all be wrong, but they can't all be right either. So we honor our neighbors not by pretending our convictions are identical, but by listening, by learning, by speaking honestly and treating every person as an image-bearer of Jesus first, whether they know that yet or not. And here's where we Christians mess this up. Here's where we get it wrong. Is we confuse confidence in Jesus with superiority over people. That's not what we're called to. But grace doesn't make me better. It means I was rescued. I think we just spent four weeks talking about that, by the way. Grace does not mean that we are better, it just means we are rescued. I think about my pastor growing up Keith. In fact, when I met Keith, it changed the way that I viewed church, changed the way that I viewed Jesus. I remember Keith showed up on the scene, and I was living kind of the two lives. Did you ever try this game? It's exhausting, by the way. But I was living two lives, like church, I knew the language. Oh, I knew the church, Christianese. I was fluent. I knew the motions.

Unless you're trying not to be out there, then you're, we had six, seven before it was a thing, right? That's how we worship. If you don't know what that means, good on you, okay, really good on you. I wish I didn't know what it meant. I still don't even know what it means, but I know what it means. There you go. So away from church, I didn't do that. I liked a good party. I liked a good drink. I liked a little bit of life of the party. And here's what Keith did. Keith saw through me. He saw through it. But here's what he didn't do. He didn't write me off. He didn't shame me. He didn't try to throw me off to the side. You know he did. He loved me enough to tell me the truth and stayed close to me to help me find my way back to Jesus. He wasn't superior. He didn't act like he knew more. He acted like a rescued person trying to help another person find rescue. See, that's what loving people to Jesus looks like, is that we literally will snatch people from the flames of judgment with love and grace. See, the gospel leaves no room for swagger. We're not called to that. Like we didn't invent or earn the way. Like Christianity does not say we're better than you.

It says we need Jesus and so do you. That's what Christianity says. So that leads us to this about Jesus. Jesus is the only way, but Jesus is open to everyone. He's the only way, but he's open to everyone. And I think as we lean through this, I want you to open your mind a little bit. If you've drawn a line here and just listen to what John 14 is all about. So in John 14, let me set the scene. You got to understand like some of you need the cinematic view of it, right? This is the night before Jesus is going to be crucified, the night before. Like he knows he's going to die the next day. So in John 13, we see some things happen. Like Jesus washes his disciples feet. Remember this? They show up in the upper room. Jesus takes off the outer garment. He gets down. He's like, "You're not going to wash my feet." And Jesus is like, "If I don't, you can't be with me." And then Peter's like, "Well, then give me a full bath." And that's weird, Peter. Why would you say that to another man, Peter? What are you doing? He's just trying to wash your feet, bro. So they have this washing of the disciples' feet and then he's told that he tells them that one of them is going to betray him. Remember this? And then Judas, he leaves the room and then Jesus tells Peter again. He's like, "Hey, by the way, before tomorrow morning, you're going to deny me three times." And Peter argues with him again.

He should stop arguing because Jesus is right. And then Jesus says at the very end of this, he's like, "I'm leaving." And he says, "Where I'm going, you can't follow me yet." So that's the scene we're going into John 14 with. they don't get the luxury we have. Like we can read the end of the story. They can't. They're living it out in real time. So they've left everything to follow Jesus. Like everything, livelihood, everything, family, everything. Now he's talking about, you're betraying me, one of you's denying me, I'm gonna depart you. Oh, yeah, and I'm gonna die. See, everything stable in their life now feels uncertain. Their entire foundation in their mind is crumbling. That's the setting for John 14. And in John 14, one, here's what it starts with. Jesus says, don't let your hearts be troubled. And then he says, trusting God and trust also in who? What's he say? In me. Trusting God, trust also in me. Notice that Jesus' words about being the way don't begin with condemnation. He's not condemning anybody when he starts. They begin with comfort. He's not standing over a bunch of outsiders of face shouting at them. He's not going, you all are wrong.

I'm the only way. No, he's sitting with his troubled friends. He's sitting with his friends and he's going, hey, hey, just trust me. Hey, you've been with me. You've seen me walk on water. You've seen blind people see. You've seen deaf people here. You've seen people that never walked in their life, get up and run. Like, just trust me. And then he keeps on in verses two through four where he starts talking about like, there's room in my father's house. And then Jesus says he's going to go prepare a place for them. Like, this is an invitation, not a locked door. Jesus is inviting in this moment. He's not closing doors for any of them. Like, he's telling an anxious group of disciples that separation will not have the final word. That's the context. Now, there's a guy named Thomas. You guys know Thomas? Do you know how people know Thomas as? Oh, you know him. Doubting Thomas. By the way, I would hate to be known as Doubting Trevor for all of eternity. But he's doubting Thomas.

But I actually resonate with Thomas. Because Thomas responds with a question everyone else is afraid to ask. That's why I love Thomas in this. Like, I would love to tell you I'm like the apostle Paul. No, I'm not. Usually people think I'm like Peter 'cause I say dumb stuff and get in trouble with Jesus a lot. But I haven't cut anybody's ears off yet. So there's that, all right. But I think I'm more like Thomas. That sometimes I doubt but I'm also going to ask the question because I'm not smart enough not to ask the question. You know what I mean? So Thomas does this thing. He says, he says to Jesus, we have no idea where you're going. How could we know the way? I love that, I love how honest Thomas is in this moment. He's not pretending to understand, have you ever done that? Somebody says something to you and you have no idea what they're talking about but you act like you do. They say something and you're like, oh yeah. And in your head you're like, what? (congregation laughing) Like all my engineer friends from Raytheon here in Tucson when they talk I'm like, oh yeah, I'm in my head. I'm like, what? I didn't understand even three words.

It just came out of your mouth. But Thomas doesn't do that. He's completely honest with Jesus. And here's what I love. Jesus doesn't shame him for asking this question. That's not what Jesus does. Jesus answers him in John 14, six. So remember, he said, I have no idea where you're going. How do we know the way? And Jesus says, I'm the way. He says, I'm the way. I'm the truth and I'm the life. And then he says to Thomas, no one can come to the Father except through me Thomas. By the way, he's comforting Thomas. He's like, Thomas, you know me. You get to go to the Father. And Jesus doesn't say, hey, I know a way. Let me show you. He doesn't say, I can teach you a method. He doesn't hand Thomas a religious checklist. He doesn't say whatever path is best for you Thomas. You'll get there eventually. Jesus just says, I'm the way. The way is not a system. It's not a denomination. It's not a political platform. It's not even a moral scorecard. The way to God starts through a person through Jesus. See, Christianity is exclusive because Jesus is unique.

Look at all the other world religions. There's no other world religion where their person is resurrected. So Jesus says a couple of things. He goes, first of all, I'm the way. Like let's just start there. He goes, I'm the way. And here's how he's the way. Jesus is the way because sin has separated us from God and we can't build our own bridge back. He said, but I know the way back. So religion says, you know what? The gospel of Jesus says, God sent Jesus down for us. Like Jesus doesn't stand at the finish line going, "Oh, you're so close." (congregation laughing) It's not like that all state commercial with a guy with a fishing rod and the dollar bill, he's like, "You almost had it." (congregation laughing) That's not Jesus. He's not trying to get you to almost have it. He's not standing at the finish line and screaming, "Maybe you could get here." He entered our brokenness. He came into our sinful world. He carried our sin, he went to the cross, and he opened the road home. He said, "I'm the way." And then Jesus says, "He's the truth." Now, Jesus is the truth because He doesn't merely

give information about God. He didn't come to inform us about God. He came to reveal God. So Philip says in scripture, "Lord, show us the Father." And Jesus answers this way. Anyone who's seen me has seen the Father. He's like, "Have you seen me? "You've seen the Father." So how do you see the Father through Jesus? Well, look at the stories of Jesus. Like, remember what He touches the lepers? Now, we hear that and we're like, "Okay, you touched a sick person." No, you don't understand. Like, for Him to touch a leper as a rabbi, oh, that didn't happen. First of all, the touch of leper meant you were unclean, and that meant you had to go through seven days of ritual ceremonial cleansing in the temple and present yourself. And Jesus is out here healing and touching lepers. Like, He welcomed children. Like, the disciples are like, "Get those little brats out of here." And Jesus is like, "Whoa, time out. "You big brat." (congregation laughing) Like, He said, "Bring the children to me." He said, "These little ones, they need to hear the truth." But like, He restored failures.

Think about the woman at the well, the woman caught in the act of adultery. Like, just looking, He confronted hypocrisy. We're going to talk about that in a couple of weeks. Like, they forgave enemies. He laid down life. Here's what you need to know, truth has scars. Truth washed feet. Truth gives itself away. Jesus came as the way and the truth, and then He says this. He says, "I'm the life, I'm the life." Here's why He can claim to be the life because death couldn't hold Him. Like, I don't know about you, if somebody resurrects from the dead, they get a little authority in my life. Now, I've done a lot of funerals in my day. I've not done a single funeral where somebody popped up out of the grave a few days later and was like, "I'm back." (congregation laughing) First of all, there'd be another funeral 'cause I would die, right there? You could bury me where they were. I'm out. Like, the walking dead, that's not happening in my life. But Jesus resurrects from the dead. If you resurrect from dead, like, you get authority. So on Friday, his body's placed in a tomb.

On Sunday, the tomb is empty. The resurrection, just so you know, is not a decorative detail of Christianity. It's not just a decoration. Like, it's the center of what we believe. It's the very central core of who we are and what we're about. So if Jesus stayed dead, his claim collapses. If He says, "I'm the way, the truth, and the life, "and I could take you to His grave today," and He was still in it, He's a liar. But I can't take you to His grave where He's buried. He's not there. See, if Jesus rose though, then His authority over sin and death, and His invitation into eternal life is unlike any other invitation in history. So if He resurrected, He's the life. By the way, there's more historical documents about the resurrection of Jesus than there are about, like, the Iliad, the Odyssey. There's more historical evidence. But look at Acts, chapter four, verse 12. It says, "There is salvation in no one else," talking about Jesus. God has given no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. You can't be saved by any other name than the name of Jesus. So what is excluded? Like, what gets excluded? Well, I'll just tell you what's not excluded.

Like, let me tell you what's not excluded from salvation. There is no race on the planet that's excluded from Jesus. Like, He doesn't make an exclusive claim that says only, "This race gets Jesus." Now, there's some people that want people to believe that, but it's just not true. There's not a single nation that God says, "Yeah, everybody except you." There's not a, contrary to Piper belief, those of us from America, we were not God's chosen people first. You know that, right? Jesus also wasn't blind with blue eyes. I don't care what hung in the fellowship of Paul at your church growing up. Like, He's for all nations. He represents all people. Here's what else is not excluded. All backgrounds, especially messy ones. Any messy stories in here. Like hot mess express, like I'm the engineer, I'm the conductor, I'm with you. You know what's not excluded? Your messy story or my messy story. You know what is excluded is the idea that we can save ourselves. That's the exclusive claim, you can't save yourself. The cross of Jesus levels the ground of humanity. It's level there. Romans chapter 3, by the way, Romans, one of my favorite books in all the Bible. Romans chapter 3, one of the best chapters, verse 22 through 24, it says we are made right with God through faith in who, Jesus.

And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are, no matter who you are, you get to believe. Just do me a favor, just look around the spaces you're in. I don't care what campus you're at, just look around this room. No, don't look at me, you're still looking at me, look around the room. You guys are like, okay, I'm looking around, no you're not. Unless you're an identical twin, there's probably a couple in here like, yeah, that's us. Unless you're an identical twin, nobody else in this room looks like you. Nobody else has your DNA, no one else has your background. Romans 3 says if you believe in Jesus, no matter who you are, you get him. So here's what I do know, everyone has sinned. Any sinners in the room? If you're not raising your hand, you're totally a liar. Like there's no superiority. Nobody in here is better than anybody else. Everyone who believes is welcome. There is no favoritism. There's one savior offered for every person. And yet we've made that an exclusive claim, why people have drawn a line in the sand. The one way claim of Jesus is not making salvation unnecessarily difficult. Because that's what we want to believe. Well, that just makes it so hard. Actually, it's God doing for us what we couldn't do for ourselves. There's one way because there's one rescue. There's the life. There's the death. There's the resurrection of Jesus. The door is narrow enough to have a name, but it's wide enough for everybody to go through. Like the narrowness is Jesus, but it's wide enough that we can all go through.

Maybe Jesus is the only way, but Jesus is open to everyone. He's actually making it easier for us to find eternity. So what do you do with this? Well, if you're not a Christian, here's what I'm not doing. I'm not going to ask you to pretend like your objections magically disappear today. You're like, "Oh, no objections anymore. Thanks. Clear." Here's what I am going to ask you to do. Examine Jesus yourself. Examine Jesus. And here's what I would ask is don't confuse the failure of a follower with the character of the one they failed to follow. Let me say that again. Don't confuse the failure of a follower with the character of the one they failed to follow. See, I see this happen all the time, and you know where I see it the most is online. Could you do me a favor? Those of you that love Jesus, could you stop going to Facebook in typing why you're against everything and everyone, and then in the next breath, quote, "For God so loved the world." If you're going to go spew stuff, just don't put Jesus behind it. See, this is where people get confused, is that we taint the character of Jesus when we fail to follow him accurately. Like could I employ you if you don't know Jesus? Do me a favor. Go read the gospels. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. By the way, the word "gospels" is just a really big fancy church word for good news. Like Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, those four books of the Bible, pick one of them, read it. I would say read all four of them and see the character of Jesus.

Bring your questions when you do it. Like ask God, even if you're unsure if he's there, if Jesus is the way, show me. That things down in the margins of your Bible, you're like, "You can write in the Bible." I hope so because I do it every day. You know what I write in my Bible a lot? Read when smarter. Sometimes I write questions like, "God, what does this mean?" Sometimes I write, "When I get to heaven, need to talk about this." I wish I could tell you that's a joke. It's true. I write that stuff in my Bible. If you ask Jesus just to show you. And here's what I'd say. For just a time. Don't go read anything else. Don't go listen to anybody else. Just read what Jesus says about himself. Here's what Jesus didn't say. He didn't say clean yourself up. He said, actually, bring your addiction, bring your questions, bring your regret, bring your religious baggage, because you don't earn grace, you receive it. And the question is whether you will trust the one who was good on your behalf. Like, that's why I love messy people. I love hanging out with messy people. Messy people remind me that maybe we're all going to make it. But I love messy people like, I've got friends that I hang out with that don't know Jesus. I play golf with guys that don't know Jesus.

I play golf with friends that kind of know Jesus. And then I had one a couple of weeks ago drop a profanity on the golf course and immediately turn around. I'm so sorry. I was like, for what? They're like, I should not have said that to you. I'm like, I'm not Jesus, don't take it up with me. I'm not condemning you to hell, but you better be careful. No, I'm just joking, I'm just joking. [LAUGHTER] I love messy people, because when messy people understand Jesus stepped into their message, it changes everything. Like, maybe exclusivity is your line. Could the line you thought kept you from Jesus actually be showing you where the door is open? Is it possible that maybe what you thought was a line was actually an arrow? That maybe he's pointing you towards him. Now, if you're a follower of Jesus, I hope this message in this series will begin to change the way we speak. Like, before you answer an objection, what if you listen for the person beneath it? Like, what if you begin to ask, like, what makes this question important to you? Because their concern may not be philosophical. It may have an aim and a face. It may come from a funeral, maybe a betrayal, maybe an abusive church or someone they love. See, if you answer only the argument, you miss the person.

I had a guy come in my office about a decade ago. And he walked in and he sat down and he was like, I'm an atheist, what do you think of that? I was like, nice to meet you, I'm Trevor. And I'm a pastor and you know that, you're in my office. And he was like, well, aren't you going to debate me? I was like, oh, no, no, no, no. Because my dad gave me this phrase when I was grown up. He said, son, don't get into a crap fight with a monkey because the monkey likes it. And you'll both have stuff all over you. I'm sorry. That's pretty good wisdom from my father. And I told him, I said, no, man, I'm not going to debate you. Because you're not going to convince me to be an atheist. And I don't know if I'm going to convince you to love Jesus. But I tell you what, let me just share my story with you. And about halfway through, I asked him a couple questions. I was like, so how did you get where you are to be an atheist? And he goes, well, actually, I grew up in the church. I was like, all right, mental note, you're not an atheist. You're hurt. And I said, so tell me about that. He goes, well, I grew up in a church. And I got really hurt by the pastor there. Mental check number two. Somebody claims Jesus didn't act like Jesus. As he continued through, I realized he was coming in with a bunch of church hurt. And I looked at him, I was like, man,

I'm not sure you're an atheist. And about halfway through the morning, he was like, I'm not sure I'm an atheist either. And then he asked me this question, he goes, have I ever been? I was like, I don't think so. Can I tell you? They're just sitting in that moment with him. Just listening, not lambasting him, not trying to prove my point. You know what's crazy is he started coming to church every week about two months later. He got baptized about six months later. He started rooted about six months after that. He became a facilitator for rooted. And now he's leading people to Jesus place after place after place. He started a Bible study called, I think I'm an atheist, which I think is hilarious. It should be called, I thought I was an atheist. I think I would be a better name for it. See, when people come into your life, let's lead with humility. Like, don't say I found the right path because I'm smarter than you. First of all, I was not smarter than him. One of the smartest people I've ever met. It had zero to do with smart. What if we started with, hey, Jesus found me when I was lost? Can I share that with you? Don't make every conversation a contest.

Like, you can be clear without being cruel. You can be confident without being cocky. Like, 1 Peter 3.15 tells us to explain our hope, but to do it in a gentle and respectful way. That doesn't happen with picket signs on the corner, just so you know. Our tone is part of our testimony. The way you say things is a part of your testimony. Let me give it to you this way. If I'm like, well, I guess Jesus loves you versus-- and Jesus really loves you. Do you hear a difference in those two things? And yet, a lot of times, we do the first. In Mark chapter two, there's these four friends. And they opened a roof. They literally committed a crime to get their friend to Jesus. Now I'm not like telling you to do that. They vandalized another human being's house. They cut a hole in somebody's roof. While Jesus is speaking. Can you imagine you got Jesus at your house? You got a bunch of people there. Couple dudes, cut a hole in your roof. Down comes their paralyzed friend on a mat. You're like seriously bro? My deductible's not going to cover that. (congregation laughing) Here's what I know. They refuse to let a barrier keep their friend away from Jesus. Now while I'm not advocating vandalism.

I am advocating doing whatever you can to get your friends to Jesus. See that's loving people to Jesus. Removing whatever can be removed so they can encounter him. So here's three phrases that I think you should carry with you. If you really want to blur this line in the sand. With the next conversation that you have with people that think it's too exclusive. Actually start with, hey could you tell me more? Tell me more. And when they ask a question, maybe say, hey you know what, that's a really fair question. Instead of leading with, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard in my life. (congregation laughing) And then follow up with it. Can I just tell you, here's why I trust Jesus. Here's why I do it. Let me help you, you don't need every answer. First of all, people are not projects and love is not a tactic. So stay present. Keep pointing people to Jesus. Like what if Pantana became known across all of our cities that we're in, as the church where if you had questions you're welcome and the truth will be spoken with grace? Like what if people could disagree with us and still be certain that we love them? Even if we disagree. The line in the sand is not a battle line with people

as our enemies. People are not your enemy. You're like I don't know. Have you met some of the people in my life? They're not the enemy. You know what the enemy is? Is sin and shame and lies and isolation and death? That's the enemy. People are not targets to defeat. They're not. They're image bearers to love. Every person you encounter bears the image of Jesus. Whether they know it or not. So we erase the lines we create through arrogance, fear and hypocrisy. So Jesus can be seen clearly. That's why we erase the lines. We erase that line. Now here's what you need to know. We will never apologize for Jesus. Not one time. You will never hear me apologize for Jesus. We will apologize when we represent Jesus poorly. So if I represent Jesus poorly to you I promise you I will apologize. We will hold conviction in one hand and compassion in the other because that's what Jesus did. Here's what I know the world needs more good news. Anybody agree the world is kind of a bad news place right now? It's a hot mess.

The world needs more good news. And God saw us wondering and came to find us. God saw us guilty. He came to forgive us. God saw us dying and He came to give us life at the cross. Jesus took what we deserved. In the empty tomb it defeated what we feared. And now the invitation goes to every neighborhood, every office, every classroom, every family, every person in our city and beyond come to Jesus. One way every person invited. One savior, grace for anyone who will receive it. One name, a welcome that reaches the whole world. See Jesus is the only way, but Jesus is open to everyone. So for this series we're doing something for you. For every one of these messages we've created what we're calling a deeper dive guide. And so you can actually, you can use it in small groups. You can use it by yourself. But here's what I'm gonna ask you to do. Right now I want you to text the word dive. D-I-V-E 'cause we knew everybody could spell that. Most everybody could spell that. Some people won't be able to spell that. But the word dive, it's on the screen to 46356. And you're actually gonna get the deeper dive guide right there on your phone. It's gonna show up. It's got questions, it's got prompt space right off the messages every week.

And dig into this. And so Pantano as you go through that guide this week, I want you to remember something. Let's listen before we speak. Let's love before we lecture. Let's answer with gentleness and respect. Let's remove every obstacle we've created. And let's be a people that help erase the line so that other people can meet the one who crossed the line of heaven to earth to meet us here. So I wanna pray for us. Sometimes prayers are words that we actually worship with. So let these words be your worship as well. Let them be your prayer. But I want to pray that God would start to blur some lines so that more people could see Him. Let's pray Father today. God in the powerful name of Jesus, thank you for blurring the line when you stepped into humanity. Thank you that you started to wipe that away. God, maybe that line becomes an arrow that points to you being the only way but you're open for everyone. God, that the exclusive claim is that you're the only one that saves, but God, the beautiful thing is, is that all of us are welcome into it. So God, for anybody that struggled with this claim, God, I pray today they would begin to explore you more. God, for any of us that have represented you poorly, God, we repent. God, we ask that you would change our hearts to see people the way you saw us and our broken state. God, may we blur lines in the sand and help people see you. God, we give you the glory, we give you the honor, we give you the praise and so the powerful name

of Jesus Christ, we pray all these things. All God's people said, amen. Love you, church.
